Favorite Email A Single Penny

A woman went to a fancy dinner with her husband and his boss. The boss was very wealthy. On the way to the restaurant, the boss leaned over and picked up something off the dirty ground. Nearly buried under cigarette butts and debris, it was a single penny. She wondered WHY such a rich man would bother with a cheap, dirty penny. The question tormented her all throughout dinner. Until she couldn’t stand it any more. “Why did you pick up that penny?” she asked. “Is it rare or valuable?” He smiled, handed her the coin and asked her to look closely at it, and to read what she saw. “United States of America?” she questioned after casually examining it. “No, not that. Keep looking.” he respond. “One cent?” “No. Keep reading.” “In God We Trust?” she asked. “YES!!” he shouted. “If I trust in God, the name of God is Holy… even on a coin. If God drops a message right in front of me, telling me to trust HIM, who am I to pass it by?”

“Sugar Booger And Babe” Pastoring in the modern era has a great many conveniences that were not available to God’s men in bygone days. I can only imagine (provided he did not play Pokémon Go) how much the great apostle Paul could have accomplished if he had lived in the era of cell phones. I realize that they are a bit of a two edged sword, but I truly love the pastoral benefits of the cell phone era. I regularly send a mass text to every member of my church who has a cell phone. I can reach the entire church body in a matter of seconds. I also use the phone to text individual, personal messages, bits of encouragement to those who are in need or bits of instruction to those who have questions. My church members are just as active in this as I am. However, I have found that, as great of a tool as the cell phone and the text is, it can also provide for some incredibly entertaining moments...

that on that day I received a wonderful text that ended with the words, “Love you, babe!” I knew immediately what had happened. Halfway through the text he had forgotten that he was about to send it to me, and had gotten the idea that he was sending it to his wife. That, though, did not stop me from enjoying the mischievous nature I was born with. I suppose that is why my return text to him was, “Well, thanks a bunch, Sugar Booger, I love you too!” It was only a few seconds later that he called, apologizing profusely and confirming my suspicions. He had indeed forgotten that he was about to send that text to me instead of his wife.

There are prophecies of the future that deal solely with the Jewish people, and there are prophecies of the future that deal solely with the church. There are promises that are unconditional, things that God will do for us no matter what we do. There are also conditional promises, things that God will do for us based on our obedience to his commands.

Enabling low-income families to visit for a nominal fee, the Science Center is expanding its commitment to being an accessible and inclusive community resource. The Science Center offers a special exhibit admission rate of $2 per adult and $1 per child to guests presenting an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. Guests will explore the science of sports in the featured Team Up! exhibition, tour the Butterfly Station and Garden and unlock the fundamentals of science in a variety of interactive experiences. Guests can opt to include a digital dome show for an additional $1 per person. “It is our goal to make sure that anyone, from any background or circumstance, can learn more about science in the world around them through our exhibits and offerings,” says Adam Goebel, Executive Director of the Danville Science Center. “We are proud to participate in programs like Museums for All and host special sensory friendly evenings to better serve our region by sharing these valuable experiences with everyone.” Developed by the Association of Children’s Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences, Museums for All allows guests to visit any participating museum year-round for a minimal fee. Families are encouraged to participate and experience museums across the country – from children’s museums to science centers. Danville Science Center’s Museum for All exhibit admission rate is $2 per person, for up to four guests per card. Children ages 4-12 and seniors 60+ receive a $1 discount. For more information, visit dsc.smv.org or call 434.791.5160. Danville Science Center, 677 Craghead Street, Danville, Virginia

A student’s academic performance is influenced by a host of factors, including the learning environment both inside the classroom and at home. While students may have only limited control over the environment in their classrooms, they and their parents can do much to create home study environments that are conducive to learning. • Create a “distraction-free” zone. Today’s students are inundated with distractions. Whereas students were once most distracted by radios, televisions and the great outdoors when studying at home, nowadays kids must also find time to focus on their studies with their tablets and smartphones just a stone’s throw away. When choosing a study area at home, parents can designate a “distractionfree” zone where no televisions, radios, tablets and smartphones are allowed. Children are increasingly dependent on their smartphones and tablets, and while such devices can sometimes prove useful to students, that benefit is often outweighed by the distraction they present. When kids study at night, be sure they turn off their smartphones and only use their tablets as study aids. • Emphasize organization. Various organization techniques can help kids be more efficient when studying. Encourage kids to separate their learning materials by subject, and keep a calendar or daily planner at home listing when their assignments are due and which days they will be tested. Encourage youngsters to keep their home study areas tidy as well, as unorganized areas can make it harder to focus or force kids to spend some of their study time cleaning up. • Establish quiet hours at home. Quiet hours at home while kids are studying can help them better absorb their coursework, and that may lead to improved performance in the classroom. While it’s important that a kids’ study areas remain distraction-free, it can also help if distractions outside those areas are minimized. Keep televisions and other potentially noisy distractions turned off while kids are studying. If you want to catch up on a favorite television show or watch a movie, do so on your tablet instead of the television, connecting earphones so kids are not overhearing anything while they’re trying to study. • Keep healthy snacks on hand. Hunger can be just as distracting as electronics or noisy housemates, so keep healthy snacks on hand. In lieu of unhealthy fare like potato chips or empty calories like pretzels, keep your home stocked with fruits and vegetables and protein-rich snacks like Greek yogurt. Such snacks will quell kids’ hunger pangs while also providing a boost of energy. A strong home study environment can help students do their best in the classroom.

PEEP TALK ! “My experience with Judy Bryant at the Piedmont Shopper: I have worked with Judy for over 7 years and she is always willing to do whatever I ask of her. Sometimes I send an ad in late and she manages to get it in for me. I receive many applicants from my advertisements in the Piedmont Shopperit reaches so many people in our area each week. Thank you, Judy, for your hard work!” Vicky Miller - HR Piney Forest Health & Rehab Center You don’t ever have to worry about anyone ceasing to read the Piedmont Shopper. My uncle, Henry D. Hopkins, is 87 years old & he goes somewhere to get a stack of them each week. He delivers them to the nursing home, and to his friends in his neighborhood. He makes sure everyone gets a copy every week! He and his wife Shirley love to share it and laugh at the jokes and stories. That paper is the heartbeat for a lot of people! My daughter, Ruby, sells Scentsy and she has used your paper for many occasions. She knows that is the one paper that everyone reads! Our church, Central Boulevard Church of God, just used your paper for our Vendor Spring Fling on 4/11/15, and I am sure half or more of the people came because of the Shopper!” -Deborah Severt “I feel our business has grown every year by advertising in the Piedmont Shopper. Judy Bryant is my advertising consultant.”- Bert Sellers Owner • Seller Brothers, Inc. “We moved here over 5 years ago and LOVE your paper. It was our first time selling items through your ads. “People ask me all the time to advertise in their media and my answer is always no. My reason to them is I spend all my advertising dollars I can with the Piedmont Shopper. We get the most results from them due to their loyal readers and awesome staff. Lesley Tucker took us from a non existent business to a successful well know business in less than a year. * To help coats and jackets last longer, give them a coating of waterproofing spray.

* Asparagus can be kept longer in the fridge if you trim the ends and place the stalks upright into a wide-mouth glass with a little bit of water in the bottom. You can get an extra few days of storage with this trick.

Factors To Consider When Choosing A Neighborhood When shopping for a home, it’s easy for buyers to fall in love with a property. A well-maintained home with updated features can be hard to resist, but buyers must consider more than just a home’s appearance before submitting an offer. One variable prospective home buyers tend to value more highly than others is the neighborhood where they will ultimately choose to live. Many buyers even value neighborhoods more than homes, feeling they can always fix a home but cannot necessarily fix an undesirable neighborhood. When considering which neighborhood to begin a home search, buyers should research a host of factors. Crime Crime statistics are public domain, meaning buyers can examine crime figures for any neighborhood where they are considering buying a home. Some real estate websites list neighborhood crime ratings among the information they offer about a given property. In addition, buyers interested in learning about crime in a given neighborhood can visit a site such as CrimeReports.com to access data on crimes committed near a particular address. Home values Home values are another factor to consider when choosing a neighborhood in which to buy a home. Buyers can work with a local realtor to find a neighborhood or area where real estate prices are trending upwards. While buyers might be able to find a great deal on a home in a neighborhood where home prices are dropping, it’s important to remember those home prices are dropping for a reason. Work with your realtor to find a neighborhood where you can afford a home and where property values are not in decline. Realtors will have access to recent sales figures so you can get an idea of whether a neighborhood is trending upward or in decline. Amenities The proximity of amenities such as shopping, restaurants and parks is attractive to many buyers, and that’s something all buyers should consider before buying a home. Even if you prefer a home in a remote location, that could limit your market of buyers when you want to sell the home down the road. While your own comfort and preferences should ultimately prevail over potential resale value, it’s important that you at least consider access to amenities before making a decision. You might be able to find a compromise in a home that is a short drive away from a town center, but still remote enough that you are not in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Commute Quality of life is heavily influenced by commute time. Many men and women feel their quality of life improves dramatically the shorter their daily commute is. When considering a particular neighborhood, do a test run before making an offer on a home. Wake up early and drive to the area where you are thinking of buying, and then commute from there during rush hour. Also, do the reverse commute come quitting time. You might be able to get an estimated commute time online, but a test run can give you a more accurate idea of what your daily trips to and from the office will be like. Choosing a neighborhood where you will enjoy living requires some forethought and research. HOME FOR SALE WESTOVER AREA Brick ranch located in desirable Westover area. Lovely Lady Lingerie Everything You Need For A Fun And Romantic Evening

ADULT NOVELTIES

Samira Wiley Photo credit: The Juilliard School Q: It was good to see T.R. Knight in Stephen King’s “11/22/63” on Hulu. Can you tell me if he has any other projects lined up? -- Vivian D., Biloxi, Mississippi A: The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum will be working with Shonda Rimes again -- as a recurring character in season two of “The Catch,” which airs this spring. The exact nature of his role -- as well as the number of episodes he’ll be in -- has been kept under wraps. If you’re familiar with the show, you know that this is a con-man/caper series, so each week is full of surprises, and now we can add T.R. to the list. The series stars Mireille Enos of “The Killing” and Peter Kraus of “Parenthood” and “Six Feet Under” fame. Shonda released the following statement of this casting coup: “This has been a thrilling secret to keep! One of my favorite family members is home!” T.R. is also feeling the love, stating: “I am heartened to be returning to Shondaland and excited to work with this exceptional cast!” *** Q: I just starting bingewatching “Orange Is the New Black,” and I’m really impressed by the performance of Samira Wiley. What else can I see her in? -- Dottie F., via email A: The lovely and talented actress has just been cast in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the series adaptation of the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood. However, for this gig,

Samira is jumping ship at Netflix and heading over to Hulu. If you’re not familiar with the story, or you read it back in high school and can’t quite remember it (like me), it’s a dystopian sciencefiction story set in the near-future, which focuses on a totalitarian Christian theocracy, the Sons of Jacob, which has overthrown the U.S. government. In this society, human rights are severely limited and women’s rights are unrecognized; almost all women are forbidden to read. The series stars Elizabeth Moss (“Mad Men”) as Offred -- one of the few remaining fertile women living in our now-named nation of Gilead -- who’s one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. Samira plays her best friend. Max Minghella (“The Mindy Project”) and Ann Dowd (“The Leftovers”) also star. *** Readers: I promised I’d give you the scoop on the “Gilmore Girls” reunion on Netflix as the information became available, and I am a woman of my word. Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Keiko Agena are all returning (among many others). “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” will consist of four 90-minute movies, all of which drop on Nov. 25. So you can decide for yourself if you want to slowly savor them, or inhale all four movies in one binge-y day! To whet your appetite, go to YouTube and search “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Date Announcement, Netflix.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. Who Pays The Bill For Emergency Care? The last thing you need in a medical emergency is to stop to wonder who’s going to pay for it if you go to a community hospital. Unfortunately, depending on the details, it might be the veteran who pays. Earlier this year, Dr. Baligh Yehia, a top community-care official at the Department of Veterans Affairs, testified before the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs about the sorry, inconsistent state of the VA’s system of reimbursing for emergency medical services. One statistic: In one calendar year, 30 percent of the 2.9 million emergency-room claims were denied. This totaled $2.6 billion in medical bills that were kicked back to the veteran. Specifically: --98,000 claims denied because it was decided it wasn’t an emergency, --320,000 claims denied because it was decided another insurer should pay, --89,000 claims denied because they weren’t filed fast enough, --140,000 claims denied because it was decided that a VA hospital was available. Before an emergency occurs, get familiar with the specifics of who pays for what. Go online to VA.gov and search for Non-VA Emergency Care. You’ll get a long list of files. Scroll around and look for Fact Sheet 20-02. Print out some of the information and keep it in a file. Know exactly how far you are in miles from the nearest VA hospital or emergency clinic, and whether it’s reasonable to go that far in an emergency. Know the difference between urgent and emergency care, because the VA won’t pay for urgent care. If you go to emergency care and are later admitted, the VA may insist you be transferred to a VA hospital or they won’t pay the bills. Be clear on whether your emergency is due to service-related or nonservice-related conditions. You have 72 hours to notify the VA that you’ve gotten community emergency care. Fact Sheet 20-02 will outline all this, and more. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
