Donald Geralph Chappell

Donald Geralph Chappell 58, of 1575 Richmond Blvd, Apt N145, Danville, Va. p a s s e d away on August 7, 2016, at Danville Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 24, 1958, in Halifax County to the late David Chappell and the late Ethel Francis Carr Chappell. Mr. Chappell was of the Baptist faith and worked as an electrician for The Virginia Department of Transportation (V-DOT) for a number of years.

Mr. Chappell is survived by three daughters, Latisha B. Preston and husband William, Andrea D. Barley and husband Christopher, and Ashley C. Kelly and husband Purcell, all of Danville. He is also survived by four brothers, Albert Chappell of South Boston, Va., Billy Chappell, of Dry Fork, Va., David Chappell of Atlantic City, New Jersey and James Chappell of Sutherlin, Va. In additional to his daughters and brothers, Mr. Chappell is also survived by his grandchildren: DeAndré King, DeVonté King, DeZiyah Wade, DeMarion Wade, DeCari Wade, TyAsia Barley, TraDarious Harper, TreVon Preston, Triniti Presto, AshTon Barber and J’Rihonna Barber.

A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at The New Beginnings Hungry Thirsty Baptist Church, 801 Kemper Road, Danville, Va., with Bishop Joseph Dixon officiating.

He and his family moved to Danville in 1967, where he was the proprietor of the Stanley Lea Insurance Agency. Stan loved his work and took great satisfaction from serving his clientele.

Stan was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He took great pleasure and pride in supporting his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Stan loved spending time at Smith Mountain Lake with his family and friends and was a dedicted and sometimes long-suffering fan of the Boston Red Sox, Virginia Cavaliers, Washington Redskins, and Boston Celtics. He had a soft-spoken and easy-going manner and was always welcoming and gracious to everyone he met.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Norris Funeral Services, Inc., Mt. Hermon Chapel, 3995 Franklin Turnpike, Danville, Virginia 24540.

The family will receive friends directly after the service at Norris’s Mt. Hermon Chapel and, at other times, at the residence 119 Castle Court, Danville, VA 24540.

Florence Farmer Gery

Florence Farmer Gery of 122 North Woodberry Avenue, Danville, VA died Wednesday August 10, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a three year decline in health. She was born June 13, 1940 in Halifax County Virginia to the late Maynard Ewell Farmer and the late Evelyn Hall Farmer.

Miss Flo, as she was affectionately known by her coworkers and patients, was a registered nurse for nearly 48 years. After graduating from Wilson School of Nursing, Flo worked labor and delivery at Danville Regional Medical Center for 7 years. She later worked at Piney Forest Nursing Home as Director of Inservice for 13 years. The last 28 years of her nursing career was spent at Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute and Strafford Rehabilitation Center as a registered nurse.

She is survived by two sons, Frederick Steven Gery and wife Kim of Ringgold, VA; Anthony Reynolds Gery of Danville, VA; daughter-in-law Tommye Blair Gery of Danville, VA; one brother, James Farmer of Vernon Hill, VA; one sister Betty Ware of North Wilkesboro, NC; and four grandchildren: Matthew Gery (Christen), Nathaniel Gery, Kristina Gery, and Sarah Gery.

Saundra Ilene Pinchback Ferguson, 69, of 31 Baltimore Ave. Apt. 001B, Danville, VA, died, Sunday, August 7, 2016 at her residence.

Born December 31, 1946 in Pittsylvania County, VA, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Gwynn and the late Estelle Pinchback Stamps (James). She was married to the late James Alexander Ferguson.

She was the last survivor of her generation.

Survivors include two daughters, Lydia Jones (Roger) of Pelham, NC and Wanda A. Ferguson of Danville ,VA; one son, James A. Ferguson, Jr. of Danville, VA and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to her mother, she was predeceased by one sister, Marion P. Pritchett.

Joan Marie Roberts, 73, of 457 Church Avenue, Danville, VA went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 7, 2016 after being in declining health for the past six years.

Mrs. Roberts was born in Danville, VA on April 26, 1943, a daughter to the late John B. Wright and the late Clara Buck Wright. She had lived all of her life in Danville where she graduated from George Washington High School, Class of 1961.

She worked for Ruben’s Restaurant as a waitress for twenty-five years after which she became a fulltime homemaker and nana. She was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church where she was active in the Friendship Class for many years. She was also a children’s leader for the Bible Study Fellowship Class.

On November 9, 1963 she married Robert Allen Roberts who survives of the residence.

In addition to her husband she is survived by her son, Shon Dale Roberts and wife Suzanna, of Danville, VA; and two granddaughters, Lindsey and Lydia Roberts.

In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her brother, Bobby W. Wright.

Elizabeth Wyatt Carter, 84, of Danville, died, Tuesday, August 09, 2016 at Duke University Hospital after a brief decline in health.

Mrs. Carter was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on September 16, 1931, a daughter of the late, Malcom Harper Wyatt and Lottie Edwards Wyatt. Mrs. Carter was a retired Nurse for the North Carolina Correctional Institute. She was a member of Timberlake Baptist Church.

On June 30, 1951, she married Claude Lee “C.L.” Carter, Jr., who died on February 22, 2000.

Survivors include a son, Baron Lee Carter, of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Herman C. Wyatt, of Sutherlin; a granddaughter, Amanda Carter Baalke and husband, Matthew; two great-granddaughters, Skyler and Autumn.

In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son, Victor Alan Carter; a sister, Dorothy W. Moore; and a brother, Carroll Wyatt.

“Lee” Jeffress Cobb, 70, of 6977 Park S p r i n g s Road, Pelham, NC went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in Moses Cone Hospital after being in declining health for the past two years.

Mrs. Cobb was born in Danville, VA on January 20, 1946 a daughter to the late John Daniel Jeffress and Juanita Van Hook Jeffress.

She had lived all of her life in Caswell County where she was a graduate of the former Cobb Memorial High School, Class of 1964 and she was also voted as Miss Caswell County in 1964.

Margaret Lee was a graduate of Rockingham Community College where she received a Degree in Nursing.

She had worked for Annie Penn Hospital and Danville Regional Medical Center prior to her retirement due to health reasons. Mrs. Cobb was a former member of the Caswell County Board of Health and she was of the Methodist Faith.

On August 1, 1992 she married Joseph Elwood Cobb who survives of the residence.

Mrs. Cobb is also survived by three sons, John Wesley Sartin, & wife Teresa of Ruffin, NC, Jeffrey Howard Sartin & Melanie of Burlington, NC, Anthony Leon Sartin of Charlotte, NC, two daughters Amy Kaye Cobb of Reidsville, NC and Holly Jo Cobb of Leasburg, NC, two sisters Betty J. Markham & husband Rick of Danville, VA, Carolyn J. Johnston & husband Ken of Port Angeles, Washington State and one brother John Daniel Jeffress, Jr of Ringgold, VA, ten grandchildren & one great granddaughter.

Michael Thomas Farmer, 59, of Danville, VA died on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Mr. Farmer was born on July 24, 1957 in Danville, VA son of the late Richard Tapp Farmer and Nancy Snead Farmer. He spent all of his life in the Danville area where he was a fork lift operator for Diamond Tobacco. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include sister, Teresa Crumpton of Danville, VA; and nephews, Andrew and Corey Crumpton.

Farrell Squires, 70, of 299 Doll Branch Rd., Milton, NC died on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at Duke Medical Center after a decline in health for the past year.

Mr. Squires was born in Portsmouth, VA on December 23, 1945, son of the late Donald Austin Squires and the late Alice Lea Squires.

He lived most of his life in Caswell County where he worked for the Brian Center in patient transport. He was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles. He was of the Jehovah’s Witness faith. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle.

On June 17, 1978 he married Teresa Esposito Squires, who survives of the residence.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Donald Joseph Squires (Samantha), of Milton, NC; two daughters, Heather Squires Farlow (Patrick), of Danville, VA, and Rebecca Lynn McBride (Corey), of Dry Fork, VA; one brother; two sisters; and six grandchildren, James Marvin Farlow, III, Jackson Farrell Farlow, Kaylin Elaine Alderson, Andrew Jacob Alderson, Madyson Nicolle Squires, and Aubrey Gayle Squires.

Mr. Romay “Peepaw” Hogan, 96, of 147 Forestdale Dr., passed away on Wednesday August 10, 2016 at Duke University Medical Center after a month of declining health.

Mr. Hogan was born on June 27, 1920 to the late John Samuel Hogan & Emma Wilkerson Hogan.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Frances Moore Hogan, and two brothers, James Monroe Hogan and Woodrow W. Hogan.

Mr. Hogan served in World War II, where he was stationed in Germany and France. He received a Purple Heart and also a honorable discharge. He was a member of VFW Post # 647 and DAV #019, He was a carpenter by trade and built many homes around the area while work-

ing for American Home Construction Company.

VA Spends Big For Artwork

Five Ways To Increase Home Fire Safety An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness.

Here’s five things you can do to increase your chance of survival in a fire: • Install smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas.

Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months and replace batteries in spring and fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half!

• Have a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly — you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows and doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911). Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after safely outside.

• When renovating, consider using fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Stone wool insulation, like that produced by Roxul, resists temperatures up to approximately 2,150 F. When directly exposed to fire, it will not off-gas, contribute to toxic smoke or promote flames. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count.

• Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits.

• Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in high-risk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces and in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate your home and call for help.

Consider this: $1.2 million for a sculpture. That’s how much the Department of Veterans Affairs has paid to put a chunk of rock in the courtyard of the Palo Alto Mental Health Center.

In the name of disclosure, it was actually $482,960 for the rock itself and $807,310 for groundwork around it. Granted, the rock was cut into squares and fitted back together, but still ... The tally for artwork spending at Palo Alto tops $6 million at this point.

OpenTheBooks.com has investigated and determined how much the VA is spending on artwork.

Example: Quotations by Eleanor Roosevelt and Abe Lincoln, in Morse code, attached to the side of the parking deck. But hey, it lights up. Cost: $280,000.

Example: The new outpatient clinic in Anchorage snagged a glass sculpture for a mere $100,000.

It appears that one Florida company has raked in over $11 million over the years in various government contracts. One contract for artwork ($55,000) was categorized as

Miscellaneous Furniture and Fixtures.

Then there’s the company in New Jersey with a $3.75 million VA contract to provide a wide variety of items, including still cameras, fittings for ropes and cables ... and fur materials.

According to the OpenTheBooks.com website, the artwork numbers are crawling up each year. A mere $34,000 was spent in 2004. By 2010 it was up to $1.7 million. In 2014 the expenditures had shot up to $3.1 million. In 10 years, the tally comes to nearly $20 million for artwork.

A show of hands: Which would you rather have, a timely appointment with decent care ... or a fancy chunk of rock outside the front door and glass doodads hanging in the lobby?

And where were the veterans who are artists?

Toasted Ravioli INGREDIENTS 1½ pound bag of beef ravioli (fresh or frozen*) 1 cup buttermilk 2 eggs 2 cups Italian bread crumbs 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper Vegetable oil Parmesan cheese, freshly grated Marinara sauce INSTRUCTIONS In a bowl, mix buttermilk and eggs together.

In another bowl, mix bread crumbs, salt, and pepper together.

Dip each ravioli in the milk mixture and then press into the bread crumbs, coating both sides of the ravioli well. Place on a large baking sheet.

Place the breaded ravioli in the freezer for about 30 minutes or until firm. Meanwhile, fill a deep pot with 2 inches of oil and heat to 350 degrees F. Working in batches, place several ravioli in the oil.

Cook for 4-5 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden.

Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate or pan. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Serve warm along with marinara sauce for dipping.

NOTES *Place bag of frozen ravioli in fridge the day before making to allow to thaw.
