Africa's Threatened Rhinos

A History of Exploitation and Conservation

The first history of 3,000 years of human exploitation of rhinos.

Investigates the history, politics, economics and cultural aspects of human conflict and coexistence with rhinos. Explores what can be done to stop the extinction of Africaʼs black and white rhinos.

Africa’s surviving rhinos are under serious threat. Poaching for their horns, massive extermination by ‘sports’ hunters in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, and progressive habitat loss have all driven black and white rhino close to the edge. This book considers human interactions with these magnificent and enigmatic animals – charting hunting for food and hides, and then hunting for horn to meet external demand for this much-coveted commodity, as well as peaceful coexistence, over the course of three millennia.

With only two females alive in a closely protected reserve in Kenya, the Northern White Rhino is on the brink of extinction. The Southern White Rhino was increasing in numbers, but poaching in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia has now reduced the population to fewer than 20,000, while Black Rhino are hovering around the 6,000–6,500 mark, also with the danger of extirpation everywhere but in parts of eastern and southern Africa.

Many books have been written on poaching and the decline of the rhino, often from a very personal, engaged viewpoint. This volume takes the reader into important new territory, showing how human agency has led to the situation we now face. Covering the history of commercial and sporting exploitation of rhino, it brings the picture up to date with an overview of contemporary conservation and anti-poaching operations. This urgent work is a significant contribution to our understanding of wildlife on the African continent.

Night Vision and Daylight Camera Systems for Wildlife

A Practical Guide

Innovative techniques for filming wildlife day or night. Create high quality wildlife videos with affordable equipment.

Contains links to interactive material and useful online videos.

Only a small proportion of our most interesting wildlife is observed by naturalists. This book describes how, with the use of well-developed and reliable technology, animals can be filmed in a non-intrusive way without disturbing behaviour. Step-by-step, clearly illustrated details lead the reader past technical challenges and allow many new insights.

From bats to badgers, from hedgehogs to deer, whether by night or in the daytime, remote cameras adapted from security systems provide an ideal way to record and monitor behaviour over long periods. At a time when much of our wildlife is fast disappearing from the landscape, the need for more knowledge is especially important. Divided into sections covering different approaches and species groups, this guide offers a variety of unique and valuable tools to aid greater understanding. It will be helpful for anyone who wants to harness the power of technology to increase their understanding of wildlife, from the professional ecologist to the amateur field naturalist or keen wildlife gardener.

Ants

Covers the biology and ecology of all 61 species occurring in Britain and Ireland.

Includes extensively illustrated keys and distribution maps.

Also offers an account of exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings.

Ants are found everywhere from garden to mountaintop. They are at their most diverse in the tropics, but that does not make the 61 species of our part of the world any less fascinating or significant. As social insects, ants have fascinating life histories. Ecologically, they are highly important and influential. From tiny guest ants living in the nests of bigger species to gigantic wood ant mounds with hundreds of thousands of workers, there is a lifetime of possibility for study.

This edition of Ants covers the general biology and ecology of species occurring in Britain and Ireland, including the Channel Islands. The book presents photographs and descriptions of workers for all 61 species on the regional list, together with distribution maps. There is also an account of some of the exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings. The extensively illustrated keys deal with workers, queens and males of all the species. These have been specially written and are the first comprehensive keys since those of the first edition 30 years ago. There are also quick-check keys to workers and nests, as well as a detailed list of kit suppliers and an extensive reference list.

Ants are among the most familiar of insects and can form a crucial part of their ecosystem, having an impact far greater than their small individual size would lead us to expect. This book is for anyone wanting to learn more about these endlessly interesting insects, by reading and by applying some of the methods discussed to make new discoveries.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gary Skinner began a degree in chemistry but soon decided to swap to biology and obtained a degree in 1972. He then went on to study the wood ant Formica rufa for his PhD. After this he went on to a career in teaching until his retirement in 2008. In the 80s whilst on a trip to Skomer he saw a little book on British buttercups and thought 'I could do one on ants'. That was published in 1987 and its success led him to think about a Naturalists’ Handbook, which came out in 1996. He has written extensively across the biological sciences and was editor of the magazine Catalyst for 10 years until 2017.

Andrew Jarman has had a life-long fascination with ants. He has accumulated an extensive field and taxonomic knowledge of ants in Britain, as well as gaining a working knowledge of the ant faunas of continental Europe, Central and North America, and South-East Asia. He has been a member of the Bees, Wasps and Ants Recording Society since its earliest days and was a past committee member. In his day job, he is a lecturer and researcher in biomedical sciences, specialising in the neurobiology of the laboratory fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster

European Deserts

Sandy Wilderness on a Green Continent

Bold, original and provocative, this is the first book to identify and investigate the phenomenon of deserts in Europe.

Firmly grounded in the scientific literature, this interdisciplinary work offers a fresh conceptualisation of these neglected habitats.

Focuses upon Europeʼs little-known outback regions, whose survival is threatened despite their distinctive biodiversity, landscapes and fascinating human tales.

This is the untold story of the deserts of Europe. Scattered across the lowlands of this green subcontinent, these sandy, arid and infertile wildernesses are ‘cold deserts’. In existence for millennia and formerly much more extensive, today they present landscapes profoundly different from their surroundings and offer refuge for scarce flora and fauna with nowhere else to go. Fascinating and often magical, though frequently largely barren – or apparently so – they provide a rare glimpse of our planet in its raw form, a collective object lesson about the impact of humanity upon the natural environment.

Individual chapters cover sites in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Britain, Romania, Germany, Poland and Iceland, many of the places in question being remote and unknown to many. The specialised wildlife of these badlands and heathlands is integral to their unique character, from the great bustard and the stone-curlew to the adder and tiger beetle, from juniper to Corsican pine.

Invisible in plain sight and often under threat, few recognise or value Europe’s deserts as the relict environments that they are. Unknown, uninhabited and seldom regarded as places of beauty, our knowledge of their origins and the roles that these ‘wastelands’ once played in economies and societies is remarkably scant. Frequently poverty-stricken regions, many had reputations as undesirable and even dangerous places. Vast expanses of these unique habitats have been ‘reclaimed’ for farming and forestry. This groundbreaking book reveals their remnant wonders and makes an indisputable case that any remaining fragments must be preserved and treasured.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Environmentalist and author Chris Stone graduated from one of the very first British environment degrees and commenced his career planning wildlife conservation projects on the heaths of east Suffolk. Moving in to the field of environment and development, he took on the role of Managing Consultant with a firm specialising in tourism and environmental planning. During a career spanning three decades at UK universities, Chris dedicated himself to teaching and research on sustainability, publishing widely and establishing a reputation as an academic expert on sustainable and responsible tourism. European Deserts marks Chris's return to his lifelong passion for environmental conservation in an increasingly nature-depleted world.

A Field Guide to Urban Plants

Common Species of Pavements, Walls and Waste Ground

Introduces the most common weeds of pavement and kerb.

Clearly organised according to growth form and flower colour.

Over 100 species described and illustrated.

Have you ever wondered exactly what those ‘weeds’ are growing along the kerb or between the cracks in the pavement? Not the pampered plants of parks, front gardens and herbaceous borders, but simply those that exist everywhere and nowhere in particular: the true survivors, the botanical opportunists.

In this handy guide, we introduce the most commonplace flowers, shrubs, grasses, mosses and ferns that are to be found on the street, and show the main characteristics by which you can recognise them. Soon you’ll be more alert than ever to the rebellious species of tarmac, wall and gutter as they defy weedkiller, climate change and dog wee.

So you can identify the plants you discover in your town as readily as possible, the species are arranged according to their growth form. The book starts with the largest group – herbaceous plants – followed by a few woody plants, grasses, mosses and ferns. The first group is divided again according to flower colour: white, yellow, red/pink, blue/purple and green or brown. Within each colour, you will first find the flowers with a maximum of four petals, then those with five, then those with more than five and finally those with bilaterally symmetrical flowers. So you know quickly which group you are in, there are corresponding symbols in the profile at the bottom of each page. This ingenious little book is sure to enliven even the most mundane walk on the dreariest of days.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Alexandra-Maria Klein chopped weeds for hours as a child and thus got to know herbs very well. Today, as an ecologist, she heads the professorship for nature conservation and landscape ecology at the University of Freiburg and looks at plants from the perspective of wild bees.

Julia Krohmer earned her first pocket money by cutting out dandelions between her parents' patio tiles. Later in geo-ecology studies in Bayreuth, during a doctorate in Frankfurt and various stays abroad, she turned to plants in a more positive way. As a botanist, she is full of admiration for their beauty, adaptability and diversity. Today Julia works for the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung in the area of science coordination and transfer.

Fenland Nature

Beautiful and striking photographs illustrate the natural history and landscape of the Fens.

Insightful and engaging narrative covers Fenland ecology and history, including the search for flagship and specialist species.

A concise, accessible, and diversely sourced natural history of the region.

A summary of viewpoints that recognises the current crisis in the future of the Fens.

This book showcases the natural history and landscape of the Fens, an area now responsible for a third of Britain’s food production and worth over £3 billion to the economy every year. It describes the geology and geography across the Fenland Basin over the last 14,000 years, a period dominated by the flux of wetlands and movement of water. The human relationship with this landscape is traced through history: from Mesolithic hunters to the prosperity of a medieval economy based on the currency of eels, through the taming and draining of the vast wetlands, to modern farming on an industrial scale.

While recognising that only a fraction of the Fens is left, Fenland Nature celebrates the breadth of wildlife still to be found in the region, from vast flocks of visiting wildfowl in the winter months, to rare and specialised plants and insects – all illustrated with detailed and evocative photographs.

The book concludes by contemplating an uncertain future where there are possibilities for a sustainable agricultural industry alongside increasing biodiversity, requiring new ways of thinking and working with the land. The fenland landscape is a microcosm of the huge global challenges caused by habitat loss, ecological degradation and climate change. If solutions can be found to these complex issues in the Fens, then there is hope that these can also apply to similar places across the world.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Simon Stirrup lives on the edge of the Fens with his wife and son. He has a degree in Zoology and is a retired computer consultant. He has been a keen birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast all his life. He is widely travelled but in recent years has focused on the UK, particularly the Cambridgeshire Fens. Simon’s photography has been used by numerous publications and organisations, including British Birds, National Geographic, the National Trust and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

Duncan Poyser grew up in the Vale of York, before moving to the Fens a quarter of a century ago. An obsessive interest in birds from early childhood led to an ecology-based degree, and a teaching qualification followed. After a year working in New Zealand schools, he wandered globally for several more. Returning to the UK, he worked as an ecological consultant in the Scottish Highlands and Outer Hebrides before settling back in the Fens. Fenland Nature is Duncan’s first book.

Human, Nature

A Naturalistʼs Thoughts on Wildlife and Wild Places

IAN CARTER

Describes the means to a richer and more fulfilling relationship with nature.

A wide-ranging personal account of interactions with wildlife.

Tackles controversial topics such as invasive species, rewilding and reintroductions.

What does it mean to be a part of—rather than apart from—nature? This book is about how we interact with wildlife and the ways in which this can make our lives richer and more fulfilling. But it also explores the conflicts and contradictions inevitable in a world that is now so completely dominated by our own species.

PRAISE FOR HUMAN, NATURE

A wise, thoughtful and very readable series of essays from someone who spent his working life at the forefront of nature conservation, and has now shared his accumulated wisdom with the rest of us.

Stephen Moss, author and naturalist

A highly enjoyable read – informative, thought-provoking and above all balanced. Ian Carter wears his copious knowledge extremely lightly.

Lev Parikian, author of Why Do Birds Suddenly Disappear?

I love the warmth and refreshing candour of Ian's writing.

Conor Jameson, author and conservationist

In Human, Nature, Ian Carter offers highly readable musings on the most pressing issues facing Britain’s beleaguered wildlife. His infectious passion for the great outdoors sings from every page.

Dan Eatherley, author of Invasive Aliens

A deeply engaging account of our complex relationship with the natural world. Nic Wilson, nature writer and Guardian Country Diarist

A wonderful collection of heartfelt, insightful essays – each one like a privileged chat about the highs, lows and many conundrums of three decades working with nature, from one of its most personable and pragmatic champions. We need people like Ian.

Dr Amy-Jane Beer, author of The Flow

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ian Carter took early retirement after twenty-five years as an ornithologist with Natural England. He wrote The Red Kite (Arlequin Press 2007) and, with Dan Powell, The Red Kite’s Year (Pelagic Publishing 2019), and has been on the Editorial Board of the journal British Birds for over twenty years. Field Guide to the Snakes of Eswatini

The first dedicated book describing all the snake species found in Eswatini.

Over 300 colour images to enable easy identification. Contains precise distribution maps based on over 6,000 location records from the past thirty years.

Field Guide to the Snakes of Eswatini offers a complete account of all 63 snake species recorded in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). Each species is illustrated with stunning photographs, over 300 images in all. The species are described in detail, including size, colouration, habits and diet. Species are presented in colour-coded groups based on the severity of their bite and venom: highly venomous, venomous, venomous but not dangerous, and non-venomous. This system enables the reader to quickly assess the treatment required following a bite and to seek appropriate first aid.

Each species is contained in a double-page spread, making it easy for the reader to see all information on that particular snake, and also facilitating easy comparison by flicking between species. Dedicated sections also consider similar-looking species side by side, while there is also a wide-ranging discussion of snake behaviour, Eswatini’s habitats and a host of other fascinating and useful information.

The authors each bring nearly 50 years of fieldwork and research experience together in this groundbreaking guide. It will appeal to the experienced herpetologist as well as amateur naturalists, hikers and tourists.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Rupert Wilkey grew up in Kenya and Malawi and caught his first snake at the age of twelve. Since then he has spent the past fifty years studying the reptiles and amphibians of Africa. He has written extensively on the subject, as well as authoring books about Malawian history.

Protected Species and Biodiversity

A Guide for Planners and Ecologists

TIM REED

Planners need a single source that tells them what to expect and consider when protected species are involved in a planning application: this book does that.

Allows planners and opponents of planning applications to assess whether the material provided with a planning application is fit-for-purpose.

Fills the gaps left by statutory advice from DEFRA, and affords providers and assessors of planning submissions the chance to talk on equal terms about protected species.

This book looks at the need for properly collected protected species surveys data to accompany planning applications. In the detailed tables that fill half of the book, it provides a single source of guidance suitable for use by planners, householders and ecological consultants alike.

PRAISE FOR PROTECTED SPECIES AND BIODIVERSITY

A timely addition to the material needed to inform planners, developers and consultants alike as to what is required to guide stakeholders through the biodiversity aspects of the planning process, providing all the relevant information necessary in one succinct place.

Darren Frost, Cambridge Ecology Ltd.

This timely book strikes at the very heart of the challenge facing us in the UK. If we are to continue to develop land apace AND deliver nature’s recovery, we need a planning system with the capacity and competence to understand the requirements of both and make sound, evidence-based decisions. Tim Reed has not only set out very clearly the roles and responsibilities of developers, householders and ecological consultants in supporting such decision-making, he has provided what will be an invaluable source of support and guidance to planners to help them navigate the challenges they face in understanding and using the ecological information that is presented to them. This book should be a mandatory purchase for every local planning authority in the UK.

Sally Hayns, Chief Executive, CIEEM

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Tim Reed has had a lifelong interest in data quality and survey methods as the basis for credible decision-making by those that influence landscapes and protected areas. This has included developing survey methods for waders on moorland and machair, standardising nature reserve management plan formats, chairing development groups for national-level databases, and collaborating with the EU on data standards for Directives. His last 20 years have been spent helping major corporates establish biodiversity as part of their risk-management processes around the world, and working at public inquiries in the UK.

A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Romania

Covers in detail all 202 species of butterflies found in Romania.

Illustrated throughout with live photographs and prepared plates, offering the best of both worlds.

Wide-ranging introduction offers biogeographical context and discussion of conservation.

Through its geographical position, varied topography, particular climate and complex cultural history, Romania has managed to sustain enormously rich biodiversity. Traditional practices, which have survived longer than in most other parts of Europe, have allowed the preservation of large areas of natural habitat, little altered by human activity. All this is reflected in the breadth of lepidoptera encountered in the country – from the dazzling Freyer’s Purple Emperor to the elusive Moorland Clouded Yellow, from the almost bird-like Great Banded Grayling to the diminutive Osiris Blue.

This book considers all the species (and subspecies) of butterflies known to occur in Romania. This identification guide to the butterflies of Romania is set out in a format easy to understand not only by specialists but also for the more general naturalist or butterfly enthusiast. An expansive introduction covers the various life stages (ovum, larva, pupa and imago), biology and ecology, as well as protection and conservation, and butterfly research. The next section identifies the 14 most important habitat types frequented by butterflies in Romania.

For each of the more than 200 species covered, information on taxonomy, identification, habitat, biology, conservation and distribution is presented. Each is illustrated with photographs from nature, primarily adult males and females, but also numerous images of the developmental stages. There follows a complete set of plates of prepared butterflies, displaying dorsal and ventral positions (upper and undersides) for both males and females. Finally, the male genital armature of several species are illustrated, primarily those difficult or impossible to identify using visual determination. The result is an attractive, practical and portable guide that not only helps identify the butterfly species of Romania, but also encourages the reader to more fully appreciate and protect them.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

László Rákosy is in the first rank of European lepidopterologists, well known throughout Europe for his work, and for his warm character which makes him an ambassador for public communication of the environmental and cultural importance of butterflies and their habitats. He is among those lucky few who have turned their passion into a job. From childhood he was fascinated by the world of plants and animals, especially butterflies, motivated by the many field trips made with his parents around their hometown of Sighi?oara. A Professor at Babe?-Bolyai University, he is the author of over 200 scientific articles and numerous books about butterflies. László is active in nature conservation and works to raise public awareness of the natural world.

Clinging to the Edge

A Year in the Life of a Little Tern Colony

RICHARD BOON

Thorough exploration of the ecology of the Little Tern, and the history of its conservation.

Unflinchingly presents the challenges of conserving and protecting a threatened seabird.

Follows a single colony throughout one season in intimate and previously unseen detail.

A summer migrant to Europe from West Africa, the Little Tern is one of our most threatened and most captivating seabirds. This book is the story of one breeding season at the Beacon Ponds colony on the North Sea coast, near Spurn Point in East Yorkshire. In elegant and evocative prose it offers an intimate portrait of these endangered birds, covering everything from foraging and breeding to predators and conservation.

The colony’s small size means that it can be monitored, protected and documented in an unusual level of detail. Close observation of the birds’ behaviour and an in-depth knowledge of the natural history of their environment raise important questions about how and why we seek to preserve and protect species for whose decline we are ourselves largely responsible. A tight focus on the spectacular natural, geographical and cultural headland that is Spurn Point also provides new insights into the ecology of Little Terns. Covering the progress of the colony month by month, through an eventful spring and summer, Clinging to the Edge brings these charismatic and endearing birds vividly to life.

PRAISE FOR CLINGING TO THE EDGE

Little Terns are beautiful, elfin inhabitants of our shoreline, yet defending their breeding colonies from a thousand perils must be the toughest task in all British environmentalism. In this hugely entertaining book Richard Boon makes a powerful case for these nest-protection measures while capturing all the delicacy, joy and sheer resilience of our smallest seabird.

Mark Cocker, author and naturalist

A compulsive, meticulous and evocative account concerning the restoration of the endangered Little tern colony at Beacon Ponds, east Yorkshire. The author and colleagues recount management actions undertaken that are applicable to other endangered Little tern colonies.

Prof. David Cabot, University College Cork

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Richard Boon is chair of the Beacon Ponds Little Tern Project Management Committee. A retired academic who now volunteers for Spurn Observatory Trust, he also sits on its research committee. Richard has volunteered for the BTO and the RSPB, and has made occasional contributions to the birding press, most recently in British Birds

Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Britain and Ireland

Up-to-date, comprehensive introduction and identification guide to all the brown seaweeds around the coasts of Britain and Ireland

Exceptionally well-illustrated with over 300 compound plates of original line drawings and photographs

An indispensable research tool to phycologists and students of marine botany throughout the world

Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Britain and Ireland provides the first complete, up-to-date, detailed illustrated guide and keys to the nearly 200 species of brown algae present around the coasts of Britain and Ireland.

Following an exhaustive introduction that covers the biology and ecology of brown seaweeds, a checklist of species is set out, followed by clear and userfriendly keys to the genera. Particular attention is then paid to providing detailed illustrations, and the volume holds more than 300 compound plates of line drawings and photographs in its extensive taxonomic treatment. Comprehensive information is given on the geographical and seasonal distributions, synonymy, morphology, anatomy, cytology, reproduction, life histories, taxonomy, systematics and bibliographic material pertaining to each species.

Notably, this flora offers a much fuller consideration of many of the lesser known, more cryptic microscopic brown algae than previously available. Further, the book also contains the results of much original research undertaken by the author.

The Natural History of Blenheimʼs High Park

In-depth look at the biodiversity and ancient oaks in a medieval deer park dating from 1110.

Richly illustrated throughout with photographs of organisms.

Only the second comprehensive published record of the biodiversity of a site with ancient oaks.

High Park, at Blenheim in Oxfordshire UK, is a SSSI of great significance for its numerous ancient oaks and the organisms associated with these trees. This book gives a detailed, lavishly illustrated and thoroughly researched description of the biodiversity and natural history of what is by several measures the most significant site for ancient oaks in Europe. It draws together the expertise of more 60 specialists, and reports on the results of in-depth surveys of High Park.

Chapters cover different groups, including: flora (including bryophytes), fungi, lichens, molluscs, arachnids, flies, hymenoptera, butterflies, moths, beetles –with a special focus on saproxylic species, bugs, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals.

Despite their undoubted importance, very few sites with ancient oaks in England, the most important European country for these magnificent trees, have seen a comprehensive published account, adding to the value of this study. Several of the contributing authors describe their survey techniques in some detail, some of which are not widely known. Records are analysed in the various chapters and often compared with data from other similar sites. Overall, the book gives encouraging evidence of the great biodiversity still to be found in England, and should help to stimulate similar efforts to uncover the biodiversity and describe the natural history of ancient parkland and woodland, so that conservation of these sites can be based on firm scientific data.

PRAISE FOR THE NATURAL HISTORY OF BLENHEIMʼS HIGH PARK

A fantastic and fascinating account of one of the top ancient oak tree sites in the country, brimming with rare beetles and a wide range of other species... There is no doubt that this book will become a standard point of reference for tree and woodland ecologists.

A Birdwatcherʼs Guide to Norway

Where, when and how to find Scandinaviaʼs most soughtafter birds

BJØRN OLAV TVEIT

Covers over 350 of Norway's best birdwatching sites. 265 photos and 95 maps.

Detailed information on seeing King Eider, Stellerʼs Eider, Gyrfalcon, displaying Capercaillie, Jack Snipe, Ruff, Little Bunting, Arctic Warbler and many more.

ABirdwatcher'sGuidetoNorway helps you find all the birds of Norway and Svalbard, and guides you in detail to more than 350 of the best birdwatching sites in this beautiful and wild but still highly developed and civilised country.

Norway offers some of the most sought-after species in Europe, including King Eider, Steller’s Eider, Gyrfalcon, displaying Capercaillie, Jack Snipe, Ruff and other Arctic shorebirds in full breeding plumage, singing Little Bunting and Arctic Warbler, and many more.

Packed with 265 photos, 95 maps and comprehensive information about each site, A Birdwatcher's Guide to Norway an essential travel guide essential for anyone planning a trip to watch birds in Norway or Svalbard.

A lot has changed since the first edition came out 15 years ago. This is most evident in regards to the infrastructure: roads keep improving and changing course, ferries have in some places been replaced by bridges or tunnels, new tower hides are built. Maps and text have been updated accordingly. There have been quite a few changes in bird-life as well, such as that Barred Warbler no longer breeds regularly along the Skagerrak coast, and the number of pairs of most cliff-breeding seabirds are greatly reduced to a point where e.g. Leach's Storm-Petrel is no longer to be expected on boat trips in Lofoten. On the positive side, the population of Rustic Bunting seem to be recovering, Redflanked Bluetail is on the move into Norway, and Great Grey Owl now breeds regularly near Oslo. Furthermore, the book has been expanded to a slightly larger format, allowing for easier-to-read maps and even more stunning images taken by some of the best photographers in the country.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Bjørn Olav Tveit (b.1970) from Oslo, Norway has been an avid birdwatcher since childhood. He has trawled the country and explored all the best birding sites. He was a long-standing member of the Norwegian Rarity Committee for Birds (NSKF) and is the nature conservation contact for a local chapter of BirdLife Norway. At times he guides nature enthusiasts who want to experience Norway’s rich birdlife. When he is not outdoors birdwatching or indoors writing books, he makes music and works in the Norwegian Ministry of Culture.

It's full of stuff I knew, and a great deal more that I did not. I know just how many hundreds of hours go into researching this stuff and admire it greatly. The result is accessible, fascinating and very nicely put together. Terrific!

Bo Beolens, fatbirder.com

Ray Reedman has produced a comprehensive etymology of both the English vernacular and scientific names of all Western Palearctic bird species. This is a unique resource for anyone interested in how the names have evolved, what they mean, and how errors and misunderstandings have sometimes been perpetuated in the names we now use.

Neil Bucknell, Vice President, British Ornithologist's Union

The Vanishing Mew Gull explains in a fascinating way the origin of both the common and scientific names of our birds. After Reedman’s explanation they all make sense, and it makes you look at birds in a different way. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in ornithology.

Hein van Grouw, Senior Curator, Bird Group, The Natural History Museum at Tring

Dr Chris Thorogood, Deputy Director of Oxford Botanic Garden and author of Chasing Plants

Go on this amazing journey through time with Jeff and gain a better appreciation for our wondrous and beautiful living planet, the threat it is under today from human disturbance, and what we can still do to preserve it.

Prof. Michael E. Mann, author of Our Fragile Moment

Why does Europe have so few bird pollinators? Why do some birds eat or destroy flowers? Does providing nectar feeders reduce the pollination of nearby wild flowers? Jeff Ollerton, a leading expert in pollination, tackles these and innumerable other questions in this enjoyable historical and ecological safari through the fascinating world of pollinators and pollinated plants.

William Sutherland, Department of Zoology and St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge

Simon Barnes, author and journalist

Rob Hume draws on a lifetime of really looking at, and thinking about birds, to distil an inspiring collection of stories and observations which he, with great modesty, proposes might benefit or be of interest to any birdwatcher, from the absolute beginner to the most seasoned old hand. Illustrated throughout with the author’s own sketches and paintings, Purposeful Birdwatching offers a wealth of thoughtful ideas that will enhance your appreciation of birds and celebrate the unique, almost magical role they play in the natural world.

Killian Mullarney, ornithologist and bird artist

Covering all aspects of Painted Stork ecology, behaviour, conservation and their relationship with humans, this accessible and lavishly illustrated monograph contains a wealth of insights.

PRAISE FOR THE PAINTED STORK

...wonderful and full of data to support what Urfi and his team did for over three decades. In my opinion, this piece of work must be consulted by all the ornithologists who study bird behaviour.

Gopinathan Maheswaran, Current Science

Abdul Jamil Urfi’s latest work on his beloved Painted Storks takes us to India and provides an accessible but richly informative account of the lives of these globally Near Threatened birds.

Anthony Wetherhill, BTO News

Urfi draws upon decades of his own research on the Painted Stork, but also seamlessly places it in the broader context of ecology and conservation, especially how organisms are dealing with living in an increasingly urban, human-dominated landscape. The result is a book that will be informative for scientists, useful for conservationists, and delightfully inspiring for young budding naturalists.

Prof Amitabh Joshi, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research

The Painted Stork weaves together folklore, the author’s long-term scientific research, and his perceptive observations as a naturalist to tell the story of an iconic South Asian bird. Abdul Jamil Urfi uses his research on this bird to inform some important conservation initiatives.

Robert Montgomerie, Queen’s University

An extraordinary tour-de-force, Urfi brings his erudite scholarship and quiet passion for all aquatic birds to culminate in this remarkable portrayal of the Painted Stork.

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants

Identifying the difficult species of Britain and Ireland

JOHN M. WARREN

Covers all the main difficult groups of Britain and Ireland in a clear, accessible style.

The tabular keys are much easier to use than conventional dichotomous keys.

Key diagnostic features are illustrated in simple, nononsense diagrams.

This book offers a fresh approach to difficult plants that will make you become a more confident botanist. Unlike other wildflower guides, it will help you understand why some plants are trickier to identify than others.

PRAISE FOR FRUSTRATING FLOWERS AND PUZZLING PLANTS

John M. Warren's book tackles the trickiest of taxonomies, helping us understand our umbellifers and suss out our speedwells. It's funny, clearly written and absolutely fascinating.

Nic Wilson, Guardian country diarist

This is the closest a book could get to actually being in a room with a plant ID specialist.

Dr Sarah Dalrymple, Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland

This well-illustrated, accessible field guide to the UK’s difficult plant groups is a joy to read and easy to use. The reasons behind the plants’ complexity are clearly explained and the use of tabular keys is an excellent tool which directs you quickly to the most reasonable identification of your plant challenge.

Dr Colin Clubbe, Senior Research Leader, Kew Gardens

How many times have we snapped our wildflower guides shut in frustration, defeated by docks or muddled by marsh-orchids? Well - dare I say it - this book might just finally be the answer we’ve all been waiting for. It's beautifully illustrated, easy to use and so desperately needed.

Leif Bersweden, author of Where the Wildflowers Grow

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants is a fabulous new guide for understanding those tricky groups that you have left at the end of your visit. I love the summary tabular character matrices, the clear illustrations and quirky facts dropped into each introduction. I thoroughly endorse this fabulous book.

Sue Dancey, Identiplant Tutor

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

John Warren has had a long academic career researching the origins of botanical diversity and promoting public understanding of science. Having been a senior lecturer in ecology at Aberystwyth University, in 2016 he became Vice Chancellor of the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment.
