Treated Like Animals

Improving the Lives of the Creatures We Own, Eat and Use

Explains how to make informed and intelligent choices about your own relationship with animals.

Gives practical and accessible insights into the various ways animals are used, and sets out alternatives.

Advocates an approach to animal exploitation based on science and ethics.

Society’s arbitrary and inconsistent grouping of animals according to their ‘use’ means that we tolerate institutionalised inhumane exploitation for some while striving to protect others. The author advocates an approach to animal exploitation based on science and a universal ethics.

PRAISE FOR TREATED LIKE ANIMALS

This fascinating and engaging book challenges us all to make better lives for animals.

Chris Packham, broadcaster and author of Back to Nature

Marvellous: clear-headed, clear-sighted, rigorously unsentimental but compassionate, impeccably informed and researched, and downright wise. A companionable guide through complex and controversial territory. It deserves to be a canonical text in the welfare debate.

Charles Foster, author of Cry of the Wild and Being a Beast

A thoughtful, well-informed contribution to the animal-welfare and conservation debate.

Jane Dalton, The Independent

An important book at a crucial time in our lengthy relationship with the animals we exploit. Thoughtful, informative and firm, Simmons skilfully leads us through the complex maze of animal welfare issues and brings us to a stark realisation - for all that we have done, we must do better.

Professor Adam Hart, biologist, broadcaster and author of Unfit for Purpose

Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Britain and Ireland

Up-to-date, comprehensive introduction and identification guide to all the brown seaweeds around the coasts of Britain and Ireland

Exceptionally well-illustrated with over 300 compound plates of original line drawings and photographs.

An indispensable research tool to phycologists and students of marine botany throughout the world.

Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Britain and Ireland provides the first complete, up-to-date, detailed illustrated guide and keys to the nearly 200 species of brown algae present around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. It is the culmination of over 30 years of field and laboratory studies by the author.

Following an exhaustive introduction that covers the biology and ecology of brown seaweeds, a checklist of species is set out, followed by clear and userfriendly keys to the genera. Particular attention is then paid to providing detailed illustrations, and the volume holds more than 300 compound plates of line drawings and photographs in its extensive taxonomic treatment. Comprehensive information is given on the geographical and seasonal distributions, synonymy, morphology, anatomy, cytology, reproduction, life histories, taxonomy, systematics and bibliographic material pertaining to each species.

Notably, this flora offers a much fuller consideration of many of the lesser known, more cryptic microscopic brown algae than previously available. Further, the book also contains the results of much original research undertaken by the author. This will surely remain a standard reference work on brown seaweeds for many years to come – an indispensable research tool and field guide for phycologists and students throughout the North Atlantic region and beyond.

The Conservation and Biogeography of Amphibians in the Caribbean

Reviews the ecology and biogeography of all the main Caribbean islands, and how these relate to the amphibians occurring there.

Considers all the threats facing Caribbean amphibians as well as the efforts being made to protect them, from reserves to legislation.

Offers an important baseline against which future amphibian conservation can be measured in the face of climate change, rising sea level and a burgeoning human population.

An expansive and detailed review of the biology of Caribbean amphibians, considering their threats, conservation and outlook in a changing world. Amphibians are the group of vertebrates undergoing the fastest rate of extinction; it is urgent that we understand the causes of this and find means of protecting them.

This landmark illustrated volume brings together the leading experts in the field. As well as offering an overview of the region as a whole, individual chapters are devoted to each island or island-group and the measures used to protect their amphibians through legislation or nature reserves. The biological background of insular biogeography, including its methods, analysis and results, is reviewed and applied specifically to the problems of Caribbean amphibians – this includes a re-examination of patterns and general ideas about the status of amphibians in the Anthropocene.

Fixing our Broken Relationship with Nature

MILES RICHARDSON

Explores our hidden links with nature through the new science of nature connectedness.

Challenges flawed thinking about how to connect with nature.

Offers simple, practical, positive steps for how we can all work towards a better world.

How did our relationship with nature become broken, why does it matter and how can we fix it? From a past in which we were embedded in the natural world, revolutions in farming, science and industry have seen the human bond with nature eroded with the promise of prosperity offering happiness and meaning in life. This mindset may have delivered comfortable living for many, but there is growing recognition that the root cause of wildlife loss and the warming climate is people’s disconnection from nature, which is also an important factor in our mental health. Yet solutions focus on technical fixes to treat the symptoms of that damaged relationship, such as reducing carbon emissions and increasing habitat. What we urgently need is a whole new way of thinking.

Reconnection explores our hidden links with nature through the science of nature connectedness, setting out a way to revivify the relationship across society. Here is a route to a meaningful life that unites both human and nature’s wellbeing for a truly sustainable future. What's more, everybody has a role to play. From business leaders to conservationists, teachers to medics, from drivers to walkers, we can all reduce the damage we do and find new ways to bring nature into our lives. This timely book considers the problems scientifically, then offers simple, practical, positive steps for how we can all work towards a better world.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Miles Richardson is Professor of Human Factors and Nature Connectedness at the University of Derby, where he founded the Nature Connectedness Research Group. He has pioneered widely adopted and award-winning approaches to improving the human–nature relationship. Author of dozens of scientific papers, he advises nationally and internationally on uniting human and nature’s wellbeing.

Thermal Imaging for Wildlife Applications

A comprehensive handbook on the fundamentals, methods and application of this technology.

Augmented throughout with tips from the author's years of practical experience.

Specific sections focus on terrestrial mammals, bats, marine mammals and birds.

Thermal imaging is an exciting technology that can be applied as a powerful tool in a growing number of wildlife research, ecology and management applications. It allows us to see things that have been difficult or even impossible to detect using conventional methods, opening a window onto the worlds of cryptic, nocturnal, secretive and otherwise challenging species. This can offer a range of benefits such as increased accuracy, reduced costs, better efficiency and improvements to health and safety conditions. Yet the relevant information is often largely inaccessible to most wildlife professionals.

Thermal Imaging for Wildlife Applications brings together key findings from academic research and applied field protocols, along with the author’s wealth of practical experience, to inform and guide the reader in an approachable and understandable format. This comprehensive handbook includes chapters covering fundamentals of the technology, methods, equipment and detailed discussion of application types, as well as specific sections that focus on terrestrial mammals, bats, marine mammals and birds.

The final chapter explores some of the many potential future uses of thermal imaging, before thorough references and a list of resources ensure that this will be the standard work on the subject for years to come.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Kayleigh Fawcett Williams is a wildlife ecologist and thermographer with a PhD in bat bioacoustics. She has worked in academic, consulting and volunteer sectors, and her career with wildlife has brought her into contact with a diverse range of species around the world. She now shares her expertise through training, consulting and support work at Wildlifetek.

NILS BOUILLARD

Raises awareness of numerous important bat conservation initiatives around the globe. The first ever competitive world tour centred on bats. Details some significant discoveries, including one species new to science and two rediscoveries.

Can one undertake a round-the-world trip with conservation uppermost in the mind? This is exactly what Nils Bouillard sought to do in 2019, adapting a popular concept in birding known as the 'big year' and focusing instead on bats. This had never been done before and so became the ideal platform to spotlight countless conservation projects across the globe. In this engaging and inspiring account we follow Nils on his adventures – along the way discovering the extraordinary diversity of bat appearances and behaviour, and learning how we might help to protect these fascinating creatures.

During his itinerary covering just shy of 30 countries, Nils was lucky enough to encounter no fewer than 400 bat species. But beyond the impressive list, The Big Bat Year is a passionate tale about the people who are protecting bats all over the world, the amazing life of these animals and the unique and doughty journey it required to set a world record. Going off the beaten path isn’t difficult when it comes to bat watching, offering the chance for genuine exploration and even discovery – as evidenced by the important discovery of a species new to science while visiting Southeast Asia. This book is will appeal to any nature enthusiast, regardless of whether you enjoy chasing new species.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Traffication

How the Car Killed the Countryside

Does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals.

Uses the latest research to present a bold new explanation for the drastic loss of wildlife from our countryside.

Offers a final message of hope – with a route to nature recovery.

Traffication develops a bold new idea: that the trillions of miles of driving we do each year are just as destructive to our natural environment as any of the better known threats, such as habitat loss or intensive farming. The problem is not simply one of roadkill; the impacts of roads are far more pervasive, and they impact our wildlife in many subtle and unpredictable ways.

Using the latest research, the book reveals how road traffic shatters essential biological processes, affecting how animals communicate, move around, feed, reproduce and die. Most importantly, it shows that the influence of traffic extends well beyond the verge, and that a busy road can strip the wildlife from our countryside for miles around. In the UK, almost nowhere is exempt from this environmental toll. Yet the final message here is one of hope: by identifying the car as a major cause of the catastrophic loss of wildlife, the solutions to our biodiversity crisis suddenly become much clearer.

The first step to solving any problem is to recognise that it exists in the first place. But with road traffic, we are not even at that crucial initial stage in our recovery. Quite simply, Traffication does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals: awakening us from our collective road-blindness and opening up a whole new chapter in conservation. This urgent book is an essential contribution to the debate on how we restore the health of our countryside – and of our own minds and bodies.

The Painted Stork

Exploring Ecology and Conservation in India

Presents remarkable insights into the Painted Stork from close and sustained observation.

Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams.

An accessible introduction to key concepts and issues in ecology and conservation.

A charismatic and arresting bird, the Painted Stork inhabits the plains and wetlands of India and Southeast Asia. This near-threatened species provides a good model through which to explore a variety of ecology and conservation issues. As a colonial nester, it is also useful for considering questions related to evolution and the development of avian coloniality. The Painted Stork sometimes nests opportunistically in the middle of large cities – the Delhi Zoo colony, for instance, has been active since 1960. This offers a splendid opportunity to study the species at close range, as attested by this book's lively photographic component.

The Painted Stork is an important indicator of its wetland habitats, which themselves are highly threatened. Since environmental toxins, particularly organochlorine pesticides, travel rapidly along aquatic food chains, the study of piscivorous birds like the Painted Stork assumes special significance. Equally vulnerable today are the nesting colonies, located in marshes, village reservoirs and the wider countryside, including in urban settings. Perhaps because their natural nesting areas are becoming scarce due to habitat loss, colonial waterbirds look for suitable sites in parks and gardens. Hence, the behaviour of this species reflects changes occurring in its environment.

Birds also help us monitor the effects of global climate change, and one of the most significant dimensions of the Painted Stork is its dependence upon the monsoon. How exactly do these seasonal rains govern the food cycles in wetlands? And what happens when the monsoon fails? Covering all aspects of Painted Stork ecology, behaviour, conservation and its relationship with humans, this accessible monograph contains a wealth of new insights.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Abdul Jamil Urfi has been researching the ecology and conservation of Painted Stork in India for more than 35 years, with a special focus on the colony at Delhi Zoo. A professor of environmental studies at the University of Delhi, he has published three previous books, including Birds of India: A Literary Anthology (2011). He is a member of IUCN’s stork, ibis and spoonbill species survival commission.

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants

Identifying the difficult species of Britain and Ireland

Covers all the main difficult groups of Britain and Ireland in a clear, accessible style.

The tabular keys are much easier to use than conventional dichotomous keys.

Key diagnostic features are illustrated in simple, no-nonsense diagrams.

If you have tried to identify wildflowers, you'll already know exactly what is meant by the main title of this book. Although a lot of plants are relatively straightforward to recognise, many others are not. Standard wildflower books tend to provide as much guidance with identifying the easy and distinctive as they do with complex, tricky species. This ingenious book is designed to come to the rescue of the exasperated novice botanist and to help those more experienced who might be stuck on unfamiliar and complex groups.

From willows to water-crowfoots, from eyebrights to dandelion look-a-likes, all of us have struggled with baffling specimens or the seemingly cryptic. Presented here is a fresh new approach to identifying difficult plants by giving you an understanding of the biology behind their complexity. In simple language, you will be directed to the particular parts of the plant that you need to look at most closely. The tabular keys are more user friendly and evolutionarily valid than conventional dichotomous keys, which are often confusing and unwieldy. Each chapter contains illustrations of the plants' key diagnostic features, rather than of entire plants. Other novel aspects include coverage of the historical recognition of complexity within each group, which is used to inform debate about the level of resolution that may be most appropriate for your needs.

This accessible guide is the perfect chance to get to grips with that challenging group you keep saving for 'next year' or for untangling a botanical mystery which keeps repeating itself.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

The Atlas of Early Modern Wildlife

Provides maps and analysis of the early modern distribution of more than 150 species.

Gathers observations by amateur naturalists, travellers and local historians from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries for the very first time.

Derived from over 10,000 records from over 200 primary sources.

What was the state of wildlife in Britain and Ireland before modern records began? The Atlas of Early Modern Wildlife looks at the era before climate change, before the intensification of agriculture, before even the Industrial Revolution. In the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, beavers still swim in the River Ness. Isolated populations of wolves and lynxes linger in the uplands. Sea eagles are widespread around the coasts. Wildcats and pine martens remain common in the Lake District.

In this ground-breaking volume, the observations of early modern amateur naturalists, travellers and local historians are gathered together for the very first time. Drawing on over 10,000 records from across Britain and Ireland, the book presents maps and notes on the former distribution of over 150 species, providing a new baseline against which to discuss subsequent declines and extinctions, expansions and introductions. A guide to identification describes the reliable and unreliable names of each species, including the pre-Linnaean scientific nomenclature, as well as local names in early modern English and, where used in the sources, Irish, Scots, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, Cornish and Norn.

Raising a good number of questions at the same time as it answers many others, this remarkable resource will be of great value to conservationists, archaeologists, historians and anyone with an interest in the natural heritage of Britain and Ireland.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Lee Raye is an associate lecturer at the Open University and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society specialising in the history of wild animals and plants in preindustrial Britain and Ireland. Their translation of Robert Sibbald’s (1684) Wild Plants of Scotland and the Animals of Scotland was published in 2020.

Harbour Ecology

Environment and Development in Poole Harbour

A clear-eyed examination of sustainable development in the coastal estuarine/marine context. Reflects on the paradox of protected yet polluted environments.

In-depth consideration of the ecology of this major English harbour.

Poole Harbour is protected and recognised, nationally and internationally, for its ecological importance. However, it has also been classified as polluted and eutrophic. These twin designations – protected yet polluted – exemplify the condition of many estuaries, making Poole Harbour an ideal subject for elucidating the circumstances behind this apparent paradox.

A central concern throughout is the question of sustainable development in coastal and marine contexts, making this wide-ranging study relevant well beyond the bounds of its primary geographical focus.

PRAISE FOR HARBOUR ECOLOGY

This is a well written, thorough, well documented, easy to read, and fascinating book...a very informative and fascinating case study of how local politics prevent the management of an MPA and lessons learned. Prof. Eric Wolanski, author of Coasts and Estuaries: The Future

Rock pools

A complete introduction to rock-pool inhabitants and habitats

of the British Isles and Ireland.

Detailed keys to all the main animal groups likely to be encountered.

Highly illustrated, with important features emphasised.

On rocky coastlines, receding tides leave standing pools that have long held a fascination for the amateur seashore naturalist, revealing glimpses of colourful and curious marine plants and animals. Animal diversity is far greater in the sea than in terrestrial or freshwater habitats, and the hugely varied fauna of rock pools reflects that fact. Rock pools also undergo dramatic shifts in temperature, salinity and pH, making such habitats crucibles of adaptation and change. This Naturalists’ Handbook offers a comprehensive introduction to this captivating world, with chapters covering rock-pool ecology, seaweeds, animals, identification and guidelines for possible fieldwork and further study.

Also presented are detailed keys to all the main groups likely to be encountered when rockpooling around Britain and Ireland – from sea squirts to chitons, from anemones to sea spiders, from amphipods to fishes. Rock pools is an indispensable tool in discovering these kaleidoscopic habitats and their multitudinous inhabitants.

PRAISE FOR ROCK POOLS

This is a holistic guide to one of the most accessible and fascinating marine habitats, written by one of the great authorities on marine ecology. Engaging introductory chapters that illustrate the physical and biological processes experienced by rockpools and their inhabitants, are paired with illustrated keys to taxa. Social Calls of the Bats of Britain and Ireland

Expanded and Revised Second Edition

Updated and expanded from the first edition to include additional information and new examples.

Call library now with full spectrum sound files, as well as many new examples.

Survey guidelines incorporated in the book.

The social calls of bats are increasingly being recognised as a useful aid to identification. Accompanied by an extensive downloadable library of sound files, this expanded and updated new edition summarises what is understood so far about social calls of the bat species occurring in Britain and Ireland, and north-west Europe.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Neil Middleton is the owner of BatAbility Courses & Tuition, which delivers bat-related skills development throughout the UK and beyond. He has designed and delivered in excess of 250 training events covering a wide range of business and ecology-related subjects. Having studied bats for over 25 years, with a particular focus on acoustic behaviour (echolocation and social calls), Neil is the author of Is That a Bat? A Guide to Non-Bat Sounds Encountered During Bat Surveys and The Effective Ecologist: Succeed in the Office Environment, both published by Pelagic.

Andrew Froud is an ecologist for the City of London Corporation and has been working with bats for more than 20 years. The primary focus of his batrelated research has been the ancient semi-natural wood-pastures of Epping Forest, Essex, examining the impacts of habitat management on the local bat population. He also has a broader focus on veteran tree management and the restoration and creation of dynamic habitats within the wood-pasture ecosystem.

Keith French was born and raised in the countryside. Working first with cattle and sheep, then as a gamekeeper on a small country estate, it was when he moved to Epping Forest, in 2001, that his interest in bats was born. Two years later, while attending a bat training course, he met the co-authors of this book; this led to them working together on many bat-related studies. Keith has been fortunate to record bats in some exotic locations such as the Amazon, Costa Rica, USA and several African countries.

Rhythms of Nature

Wildlife and Wild Places Between the Moors

IAN CARTER

Reflects on the importance of nature for human wellbeing and development.

Offers inspiring suggestions for how to engage with the natural world in new ways.

Packed with vivid wildlife encounters, anecdotes and stories.

After a career in conservation, Ian Carter moves to a secluded farmhouse tucked away in the low hills of mid-Devon between Exmoor and Dartmoor. Here he tries new approaches to connecting with the local countryside – from following streams wherever they may lead, to night-time rambles or simply rewilding the garden.

PRAISE FOR RHYTHMS OF NATURE

A wonderful blend of knowledge and insight, fuelled by unquenchable curiosity for the natural world. Rhythms of Nature is like a conversation with a clever friend. I loved it.

Lev Parikian, author of Into the Tangled Bank, Light Rains Sometimes Fall, and Why Do Biirds Suddenly Disappear?

By turns practical and philosophical, Rhythms of Nature is a genially-shared, genuine reflection on a lifetime's hard-won, hands-on knowledge from a total involvement in nature.

Stephen Rutt, author of The Seafarers, Wintering, and The Eternal Season

I so enjoyed reading this book. Ian’s writing is engaging, thought-provoking, and refreshingly honest - and his approaches to exploring his new patch, together with suggestions for how we might all rekindle our relationships with the natural world, are both insightful and inspiring.

Brigit Strawbridge Howard, author of Dancing with Bees

Having greatly enjoyed the author’s earlier book, Human, Nature, I was pleased to find its follow-up to be another delight: a beautifully written and thought-provoking meditation on our diverse relationship with nature, this time viewed through the prism of the changing seasons.

Jonathan Elphick, ornithologist and natural history author

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ian Carter worked as an ornithologist with Natural England for 25 years but now spends his time watching and writing about wildlife. He wrote The Red Kite’s Year and The Hen Harrier’s Year with wildlife artist Dan Powell. Human, Nature is also published by Pelagic.

The Wryneck

The first ever detailed monograph on Jynx torquilla in English. Includes a wealth of original research as well as a comprehensive literature review.

Illustrated throughout with excellent photographs and original sound spectrograms.

A comprehensive study on the natural history and cultural symbolism of an unusual woodpecker. Detailed information is presented on the species' origins, taxonomy, anatomy, appearance, calls, distribution, conservation status, habitats, movements, breeding, diet and relationships. With a chapter on its closest relative, the Red-throated Wryneck.

PRAISE FOR THE WRYNECK

These captivatingly bizarre little woodpeckers now have the book they deserve, from the talented pen of one of the world’s top picidologists. Gerard Gorman gives his readers the most detailed look ever into the wryneck’s biology, along with an engaging, sometimes startling account of what these birds have meant to human culture over the millennia. Highly recommended if you love wrynecks—and even more highly if you don’t yet.

As the common name suggests the Wryneck is one of our weirdest birds. Gerard Gorman has combined his own knowledge of the birds with the extensive literature to produce this beautifully written and produced monograph. It really is a joy to read.

For too long this little master of disguise has lived in the shadow of its woodpecker relatives. In this comprehensive single-species account it finally gets the star treatment it richly deserves from Europe’s leading expert on the group. Gerard Gorman reveals the wryneck as one of the most fascinating, subtly beautiful and sought after of all birds.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gerard Gorman is a global authority on the Picidae. He has published numerous papers and six previous books on this fascinating family of birds, including Woodpeckers of the World: The Complete Guide (Helm 2014). For the past 30 years he has travelled the world studying woodpeckers, believing that time in the field is the only way to really get to know them. He lives in Budapest and is a founder member and current leader of the Hungarian Woodpecker Working Group.
