MARK AVERY
Provides a clear-eyed overview of nature conservation in Britain.
Offers many reasons for hope, alongside practical advice for the reader.
Highly entertaining read with a personal touch.
In this informed, incisive and passionate commentary analyses what is wrong with certain ways we do wildlife conservation but explores some of its many successes too.
If I were ‘king for a day’ Avery would be instantly installed as the benign dictator of conservation in the UK. If you love wildlife, read this, think about this, and act upon this.
Chris Packham, broadcaster and author of Back to Nature
Reflections is a work of distilled campaigning wisdom, told with the irrepressible optimism of a passionate advocate for nature who’s spent decades working tirelessly for wildlife.
Guy Shrubsole, author of The Lost Rainforests of Britain and Who Owns England?
A clarion call for more nature in Britain and how we can get it. Wise, knowledgeable, provocative and good humoured – Mark Avery is a national treasure.
Patrick Barkham, author of Wild Grreen Wonders and co-author of Wild Isles
Mark Avery has written a love letter to Nature. Yes it is well written and academically sound and all that you’d expect from a person of his track record, but the real pleasure of the book is that under all that patina of propriety and science you feel a Mr Darcy launching himself into the lake because nothing is more important to him than capturing our hearts with his passion. A real triumph.
Sir Tim Smit, Co-founder and Vice Chairman of the Eden Project
Dr Mark Avery is a senior UK conservationist with nearly four decades' experience of giving wildlife a better future. The author of numerous previous books, including Inglorious: Conflict in the Uplands (2015), Mark worked for the RSPB for 25 years before going freelance in 2011. He co-founded the campaigning organisation Wild Justice and was recently chair of the World Land Trust. Twitter @markavery

Accessibly covers cryptosphere ecology and environment
Easy-to-use, comprehensively illustrated keys
Offers guidelines for study and ideas for further research
Logs, stones and the like provide an interesting interface between the damp depths of the soil and the drier open ground surface, offering refuges for a fascinating array of animals. The communities of organisms that live beneath them are little noticed and even less studied, yet the potential for ecological work here is great. Some of the animals are relatively large and frequently not difficult to find. They exhibit a wide range of lifestyles – from slow slugs or snails to very fast centipedes, from generalist to specialist feeders and from herbivores to carnivores.
With chapters covering the cryptosphere environment, species groups, identification, guidelines and ideas for further research, this much-expanded and updated new edition also includes extensive, easy-to-use, comprehensively illustrated keys. Ground-surface debris can be found almost anywhere, often presenting highly accessible microhabitats for study and bringing immediate rewards to the curious: here is the ideal tool to unlock these worlds.

Britain and Ireland between the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution
LEE RAYE
Provides maps and analysis of the early modern distribution of more than 160 species.
Gathers observations by amateur naturalists, travellers and local historians from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries for the very first time.
Derived from over 10,000 records from over 200 primary sources.
The Atlas of Early Modern Wildlife looks at the era before climate change, before the intensification of agriculture, before even the Industrial Revolution. In the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, beavers still swim in the River Ness. Isolated populations of wolves and lynxes linger in the uplands. Sea eagles are widespread around the coasts. Wildcats and pine martens remain common in the Lake District.
In this ground-breaking volume, the observations of early modern amateur naturalists, travellers and local historians are gathered together for the very first time. Drawing on more than 10,000 records from across Britain and Ireland, the book presents maps and notes on the former distribution of over 160 species, providing a new baseline against which to discuss subsequent declines and extinctions, expansions and introductions.
PRAISE FOR THE ATLAS OF EARLY MODERN WILDLIFE
Indispensable for historians of natural history, environmental historians, and anyone interested in heritage and the natural world in Britain and Ireland. Valuable also for analysis of past taxonomy. Highly recommended.
Anna Marie Roos, Professor of the History of Science and Medicine, University of Lincoln

A detailed overview of the development of amphibian conservation in Britain.
Bursting with unique insights into methodologies and how they emerged.
Includes a wealth of unpublished and no longer readily accessible material.
This book describes the history of amphibian conservation and research in Britain. It is packed with unique insights from the author who, in the late 1960s, was Britain’s first professional amphibian conservationist. At that time, the situation for amphibians was extremely serious after three decades of population decline. Up to the 1990s, Cooke was directly involved in understanding and trying to remedy the situation via research, legislation and active conservation. He initiated long-term monitoring, surveillance and studies that have continued well into this century. This research developed and utilised simple monitoring techniques, such as counting breeding newts at night or toads dead on roads. The resulting datasets also proved of value in determining whether breeding behaviour was affected by climate change.
This overview charts in detail how amphibian conservation developed from a relatively low knowledge base with few individuals involved to an abundance of information available for the many groups of people now active in the field. It includes published, unpublished and no longer readily accessible material, to emphasise how contemporary knowledge, attitudes and resources affected what was done and what happened as a result. Various policies, strategies, laws and other initiatives have helped stop or slow declines, but the future is still uncertain.
The book will appeal to a broad readership, from naturalists to professional herpetologists. Furthermore, this story will have relevance for amphibian conservation in other countries in light of their more recent widespread declines. It is also of interest to those wanting to know more about the development of wildlife conservation in Britain.
Arnold Cooke worked for the national nature conservation agencies as a researcher and adviser on a range of topics for 30 years. After studying amphibian population declines with the Nature Conservancy, he was herpetological adviser for the Nature Conservancy Council. In the late 1990s, he left English Nature to pursue his interests in amphibians, birds and deer. He has published widely on subjects as diverse as the status of Britain’s amphibians and reptiles, pollutants in birds and the environmental impacts of introduced species of deer. His book Muntjac and Water Deer was published by Pelagic in 2019.

The Writer Who Came to Britain to Save the Birds
CONOR MARK JAMESONThe overdue, untold story of Hudson’s pioneering role as a campaigner, supporting the women who founded the RSPB. New insights on the unschooled immigrant writer-naturalist who dared to challenge the establishment.
A timely and revelatory recognition of the extraordinary contribution of a once-revered and now neglected champion of early conservation.
A century after W.H. Hudson’s death, this long-overdue tribute to perhaps our most significant writer-naturalist and wildlife campaigner traces his path through a dramatic and turbulent era: from his journey to Britain from Argentina in 1874 to the unveiling of a monument and bird sanctuary in his honour 50 years later in the heart of Hyde Park.
PRAISE FOR FINDING W. H. HUDSON
Jameson’s approach to Hudson’s life is a very personal one, as someone who shares Hudson’s passion for the natural world, and for saving it from the worst of humanity's impacts.
Dr Lachlan Munro, Biographer of Robert Louis Stevenson and R B Cunninghame Graham
This is an impressive, beautifully written and really enjoyable book - the perfect book if you love nature, literature and writers, and the fight for animal rights, with the brilliant writer Hudson at the centre of it. It's been pleasure to read. I'd only had a glimpse of Hudson from his Shepherd's Life but feel that now I really know him and can count him among my heroes.
Richard Hines, author of No Way but Gentlenesse
If you read one new nature book this year make sure it's this one Matthew Oates, naturalist and author of In Pursuit of Butterflies
I'm blown away! This guy was way ahead of his time and totally amazing; the original urban birder.

Up-to-date, comprehensive introduction and identification guide to all the brown seaweeds around the coasts of Britain and Ireland
Exceptionally well-illustrated with over 300 compound plates of original line drawings and photographs
An indispensable research tool to phycologists and students of marine botany throughout the world
Brown Seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Britain and Ireland provides the first complete, up-to-date, detailed illustrated guide and keys to the nearly 200 species of brown algae present around the coasts of Britain and Ireland. It is the culmination of over 30 years of field and laboratory studies by the author.
Following an exhaustive introduction that covers the biology and ecology of brown seaweeds, a checklist of species is set out, followed by clear and userfriendly keys to the genera. Particular attention is then paid to providing detailed illustrations, and the volume holds more than 300 compound plates of line drawings and photographs in its extensive taxonomic treatment. Comprehensive information is given on the geographical and seasonal distributions, synonymy, morphology, anatomy, cytology, reproduction, life histories, taxonomy, systematics and bibliographic material pertaining to each species.
Notably, this flora offers a much fuller consideration of many of the lesser known, more cryptic microscopic brown algae than previously available. Further, the book also contains the results of much original research undertaken by the author. This will surely remain a standard reference work on brown seaweeds for many years to come – an indispensable research tool and field guide for phycologists and students throughout the North Atlantic region and beyond.
Robert L. Fletcher is a Visiting Reader at the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Portsmouth, UK, where he has worked since 1971. He has published widely on aspects of the ecology, life histories, molecular biology, taxonomy and applied aspects of marine algae, with particular respect to the brown algae. He is a member of both the British Society of Phycology and the International Society of Phycology. He received his PhD in Marine Botany from the University of London, UK in 1974.

Identifying the difficult species of Britain and Ireland
JOHN M. WARRENCovers all the main difficult groups of Britain and Ireland in a clear, accessible style.
The tabular keys are much easier to use than conventional dichotomous keys.
Key diagnostic features are illustrated in simple, no-nonsense diagrams.
If you have tried to identify wildflowers, you'll already know exactly what is meant by the main title of this book. Although a lot of plants are relatively straightforward to recognise, many others are not. Standard wildflower books tend to provide as much guidance with identifying the easy and distinctive as they do with complex, tricky species. This ingenious book is designed to come to the rescue of the exasperated novice botanist and to help those more experienced who might be stuck on unfamiliar and complex groups.
From willows to water-crowfoots, from eyebrights to dandelion look-a-likes, all of us have struggled with baffling specimens or the seemingly cryptic. Presented here is a fresh new approach to identifying difficult plants by giving you an understanding of the biology behind their complexity. In simple language, you will be directed to the particular parts of the plant that you need to look at most closely. The tabular keys are more user friendly and evolutionarily valid than conventional dichotomous keys, which are often confusing and unwieldy. Each chapter contains illustrations of the plants' key diagnostic features, rather than of entire plants. Other novel aspects include coverage of the historical recognition of complexity within each group, which is used to inform debate about the level of resolution that may be most appropriate for your needs.
This accessible guide is the perfect chance to get to grips with that challenging group you keep saving for 'next year' or for untangling a botanical mystery which keeps repeating itself.
John M. Warren has had a long academic career researching the origins of botanical diversity and promoting public understanding of science. Having been a senior lecturer in ecology at Aberystwyth University, in 2016 he became Vice Chancellor of the Papua New Guinea University of Natural Resources and Environment. Now retired back in the UK, he is an Associate Tutor for the Field Studies Council.

Raises awareness of numerous important bat conservation initiatives around the globe. The first ever competitive world tour centred on bats. Details some significant discoveries, including one species new to science and two rediscoveries.
During his itinerary covering just shy of 30 countries, Nils Bouillard was lucky enough to encounter no fewer than 400 species of bats. But beyond the impressive list, The Big Bat Year is a passionate tale about the people who are protecting bats all over the world.
PRAISE FOR BIG BAT YEAR
This book is as inspiring as it is informative. I hope it encourages others to follow in Nils's footsteps to celebrate each and every one of the 1450 species of bats and their intriguing, incredible lives.
Jon Hall, mammalwatching.com
Big Bat Year is an essential read for anyone interested in these fascinating creatures. It is an immersive and enlightening journey that will leave readers with a newfound appreciation for these often-misunderstood creatures. An eagerly-anticipated book that does not disappoint!
Jon Russ, author of Bat Caalls of Britain and Europe
Big Bat Year is a breath-taking and heartfelt story. It is well written, full of humor, and accompanied by stunning photographs. From now on, when I see a bat traverse the sky in the twilight, I will look at it in a different way, but I will also think of Nils and his incredible adventure.
Arjan Dwarshuis, conservationist, writer and Guinness World Record holder for most birds observed in a single year
Nils Bouillard’s quest to encounter as many bat species as possible makes birding big years seem a bit tame by comparison. Like all great obsessions, the bat year includes joys and disappointments, ecstasy and boredom. The highs and lows are all conveyed in this wonderful book. But this is more than an adventure story: it’s a book that shares a passion for often-misunderstood bats and why their fate is intermingled with ours.
Matthew L. Miller, author of Fishing Through the Apocalypse

Reveals the overwhelmingly beneficial role played by microorganisms.
A clear and engaging account of the fundamental importance of microbes to all life.
Discover how microbes affect our decisions and behaviour.
Cutting-edge microbiome research is changing our understanding of reality. It is increasingly evident that microbes are the very glue that holds ecosystems together. This topical and original book counters the prevailing narrative of microbes as the bane of society, along the way providing much-needed clarity on the beneficial role they play.
Jake Robinson is the Gilbert White, the Henry David Thoreau, of the microbiome. His charmingly-written book, a work of science leavened by literary allusion and engaging personal memoir, invites us to dive down through many powers of ten to the invisible level of microbes... nobody could fail to be intrigued.
Richard DawkinsI enjoyed this book very much indeed. It was a fascinating romp through the microbial world and is definitely the sort of book that would make me miss my station. If you are not a microbiologist, you will be astonished at how much microbes affect, regulate and sustain your life, and Robinson's passion and enthusiasm for the world of the very tiny positively glows on every page.
Dr George McGavin,President of the Dorset Wildlife Trust
From the microbes in our bodies to those on the International Space Station, Jake Robinson reveals a hidden world that we would be unwise to ignore.

NEFTALÍ RÍOS-LÓPEZ, HAROLD HEATWOLE
Reviews the ecology and biogeography of all the main Caribbean islands, and how these relate to the amphibians occurring there.
Considers all the threats facing Caribbean amphibians as well as the efforts being made to protect them, from reserves to legislation.
Offers an important baseline against which future amphibian conservation can be measured in the face of climate change, rising sea level and a burgeoning human population.
An expansive and detailed review of the biology of Caribbean amphibians, considering their threats, conservation and outlook in a changing world. Amphibians are the group of vertebrates undergoing the fastest rate of extinction; it is urgent that we understand the causes of this and find means of protecting them.
This landmark illustrated volume brings together the leading experts in the field. As well as offering an overview of the region as a whole, individual chapters are devoted to each island or island-group and the measures used to protect their amphibians through legislation or nature reserves. The biological background of insular biogeography, including its methods, analysis and results, is reviewed and applied specifically to the problems of Caribbean amphibians – this includes a re-examination of patterns and general ideas about the status of amphibians in the Anthropocene.
