A Wildlife Guide to Georgia

BRECHT DE MEULENAER

The only 'where to watch' guide for the Caucasus. Covers birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies, flora and much more.

Contains practical maps and suggested routes.

Considered by many to be one of the most interesting, varied and biodiverse destinations in the Western Palearctic, Georgia has a great deal to offer for the naturalist-traveller. This guidebook is the first of its kind for the area, not only giving information on where to go birding, but also covering mammals, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies, flora and numerous other items of note.

Since the Rose Revolution in 2003, Georgia has gained popularity among western travellers. With the Caucasus being one of the richest wildlife hotspots in the world, featuring a high degree of endemism – not to mention the hospitable people, dramatic landscapes and last but not least the wonderful cuisine – it makes an excellent travel destination.

This book is the practical guide for any nature enthusiast considering a visit to Georgia – from the serious birder to the butterfly fanatic, to the traveller with a general interest in the natural world. Packed with photographs and tips, it also contains many practical maps and suggested routes. An indispensable companion for any journey to the region.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Brecht de Meulenaer has been passionate about nature and birds since childhood. After studies in biology and a short career as a researcher, he got bitten by the travel bug and ended up in the Caucasus. It was love at first sight. A polyglot, he has led many wildlife tours and scientific surveys in Georgia and elsewhere.

The Natural History of Blenheimʼs High Park

In-depth look at the biodiversity and ancient oaks in a medieval deer park dating from 1110.

Richly illustrated throughout with photographs of organisms.

Only the second comprehensive published record of the biodiversity of a site with ancient oaks.

High Park, at Blenheim in Oxfordshire UK, is a SSSI of great significance for its numerous ancient oaks and the organisms associated with these trees. This book gives a detailed, lavishly illustrated and thoroughly researched description of the biodiversity and natural history of what is by several measures the most significant site for ancient oaks in Europe. It draws together the expertise of more 60 specialists, and reports on the results of in-depth surveys of High Park.

Chapters cover different groups, including: flora (including bryophytes), fungi, lichens, molluscs, arachnids, flies, hymenoptera, butterflies, moths, beetles –with a special focus on saproxylic species, bugs, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals.

Despite their undoubted importance, very few sites with ancient oaks in England, the most important European country for these magnificent trees, have seen a comprehensive published account, adding to the value of this study. Several of the contributing authors describe their survey techniques in some detail, some of which are not widely known. Records are analysed in the various chapters and often compared with data from other similar sites. Overall, the book gives encouraging evidence of the great biodiversity still to be found in England, and should help to stimulate similar efforts to uncover the biodiversity and describe the natural history of ancient parkland and woodland, so that conservation of these sites can be based on firm scientific data.

Reconnection

Fixing our Broken Relationship with Nature MILES RICHARDSON

Explores our hidden links with nature through the new science of nature connectedness.

Challenges flawed thinking about how to connect with nature.

Offers simple, practical, positive steps for how we can all work towards a better world.

This book tells the story of how our relationship with nature got broken, why it matters and how to fix it. There is growing recognition that the root cause of wildlife loss and the warming climate is people’s disconnection from nature, yet solutions focus on technical fixes. Reconnection considers the problems scientifically.

PRAISE FOR RECONNECTION

A joy to read! Thought-provoking and inspiring.

Megan McCubbin, zoologist, conservationist and TV presenter

Richardson has produced a rich, timely and painstakingly researched account of what’s gone wrong in our relationship with nature and most urgently, how it might be fixed.

Amy-Jane Beer, naturalist and author of The Flow

This is a book with muscle. Reconnection is an important book that moved me, made me think and, made me smile.

Sir Tim Smit, Co-founder and Vice Chairman of the Eden Project

Miles Richardson expertly balances threat with hope in this timely and brilliant book.

Hilary McGrady, Director General at the National Trust

Fascinating, poignant and hopeful. Reconnection should be mandatory reading for us all.

Dr Mya-Rose Craig, author of Birdgirl

As Miles Richardson says; nature makes sense. After reading his book you too will be in no doubt.

David Lindo, The Urban Birder

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Miles Richardson is Professor of Human Factors and Nature Connectedness at the University of Derby, where he founded the Nature Connectedness Research Group. He has pioneered widely adopted and award-winning approaches to improving the human–nature relationship. Treewilding

Our Past, Present and Future Relationship with Forests

An engaging historical overview and forward-looking account of our profound relationship with trees. Reveals the complexities, controversies, challenges and solutions of forest restoration.

Includes cutting-edge science and ancient wisdom to reveal how to restore forests.

As we clear millions of hectares of forests globally, the challenge of restoring these precious ecosystems becomes ever more pressing. The stakes are high: a staggering 95% of Earth’s land could succumb to degradation by 2050. While the task might appear straightforward – simply plant millions of trees – the reality is far more perplexing. Haphazard tree-planting in unsuitable locations can wreak havoc on ecosystems and jeopardise the livelihoods of local communities.

The surge of interest in restoring forests has ushered in a wave of greenwashing, where deceptive environmental marketing and scientific mishaps undermine genuine efforts. Yet this new focus also brings forth a plethora of solutions and many rays of hope. Amidst such a complex landscape, cutting-edge science and Indigenous knowledge together can redefine our understanding in a way that not only helps regenerate nature but also allows human communities to thrive.

This original, topical and engaging book navigates the intricate web of forest restoration. It reveals how a nuanced approach is required – one that integrates the latest scientific advancements (for instance in microbial ecology, acoustic technology and epigenetics), Indigenous leadership and a holistic understanding of the interconnectedness of life within these vital ecosystems. Treewilding asks us to reflect on our relationship with trees and how we must see the woods (complex social and ecological systems) for the wood (timber) –a realisation that is perhaps the biggest ‘secret’ to restoring nature.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Jake M. Robinson is a British microbial and restoration ecologist based in Australia. In 2021, he received a PhD from the University of Sheffield. He enjoys researching microbes, ecosystems, social equity issues, and ways to conserve and restore nature. Treewilding is his second book. Invisible Friends was Jake’s first book. It’s all about how microbes shape our lives and the world around us.

Traffication

How Cars Destroy Nature and What We Can Do About It

Does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals.

Uses the latest research to present a bold new explanation for the drastic loss of wildlife from our countryside.

Offers a final message of hope – with a route to nature recovery.

The trillions of miles we drive each year are just as destructive to our natural environment as any of the better known threats, such as habitat loss or intensive farming. Traffication does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals: awakening us from our collective road-blindness and opening up a whole new chapter in conservation.

PRAISE FOR TRAFFICATION

Mind-blowing! Everyone who cares about nature should read this book.

James Rebanks, author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral

Remarkable! An immensely readable eye-opener. How could we have been so unaware of something so obvious and so damaging to wildlife?

Tim Birkhead, author of Birds and Us

Paul Donald's Traffication is undoubtedly one of the environmental books of 2023. I could not recommend it more highly.

Mark Cocker, author of One Midsummer's Day

A brilliant and comprehensive expose of what roads are doing to our wildlife: meticulous, persuasive, challenging and brilliantly researched.

Ben Macdonald, author of Rebirding

A very informed, impressive book. Essential for understanding the horrifying impact of roads and motor vehicles on nature.

Derek Gow, author of Bringing Back the Beaver

This book gives a well-researched and engagingly written account of what is arguably one of the major conservation issues of our time.

Professor Ian Newton FRS, ornithologist and conservationist

A meticulously-researched exposé of how we've been asleep at the wheel for years. Traffication is the conservation conundrum we need to address with urgency.

Dr Ruth Tingay, conservationist and co-director of Wild Justice

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Paul F. Donald worked in the research department of the RSPB for over twenty years, latterly as Principal Scientist, before moving to BirdLife International as Senior Scientist. He is a recipient of the prestigious ZSL/Marsh Award for Conservation Science and an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Cambridge.

Protected Species and Biodiversity

A Guide for Planners and Ecologists

TIM REED

Planners need a single source that tells them what to expect and consider when protected species are involved in a planning application: this book does that. Allows planners and opponents of planning applications to assess whether the material provided with a planning application is fit-for-purpose.

Fills the gaps left by statutory advice from DEFRA, and affords providers and assessors of planning submissions the chance to talk on equal terms about protected species.

This book provides a single source of guidance on the protected-species survey data that accompany planning applications. Comprehensive and clear, it is an essential reference for planners and ecological consultants.

New development proposals potentially affect protected species on a daily basis. For the first time, this guide brings together in one place all the key elements needed to collect and interpret survey data for protected species and therefore help determine planning applications. By working through individual species and group tables, even the least experienced planner can begin critically to evaluate the often-variable material provided by ecologists in planning submissions.

Chapters cover: the planning system and biodiversity; government guidance and its interpretation; how to secure better quality data; the most recent standing advice; detailed notes on protected species; drawing in data from other surveys, and biodiversity net gain. Packed with information, the book also codifies what a planner expects from ecologists, so that both target audiences are able to work better together, and thus more effectively help safeguard protected species.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Tim Reed has had a lifelong interest in data quality and survey methods as the basis for credible decision-making by those that influence landscapes and protected areas. This has included developing survey methods for waders on moorland and machair, standardising nature reserve management plan formats, chairing development groups for national-level databases, and collaborating with the EU on data standards for Directives. His last 20 years have been spent helping major corporates establish biodiversity as part of their riskmanagement processes around the world, and working at public inquiries in the UK.

A Field Guide to Urban Plants

The Flora of Pavements, Walls and Waste Ground

ALEXANDRA-MARIA KLEIN, JULIA KROHMER

Introduces the most common weeds of pavement and kerb.

Clearly organised according to growth form and flower colour.

Almost 100 species described and illustrated.

Have you ever wondered exactly what those ‘weeds’ are growing along the kerb or between the cracks in the pavement? Not the pampered plants of parks, front gardens and herbaceous borders, but simply those that exist everywhere and nowhere in particular: the true survivors, the botanical opportunists. In this handy guide, we introduce the most commonplace flowers, shrubs, grasses, mosses and ferns that are to be found on the street, and show the main characteristics by which you can recognise them. Soon you’ll be more alert than ever to the rebellious species of tarmac, wall and gutter as they defy weedkiller, climate change and dog wee.

So you can identify the plants you discover in your town as readily as possible, the species are arranged according to their growth form. The book starts with the largest group – herbaceous plants – followed by a few woody plants, grasses, mosses and ferns. The first group is divided again according to flower colour: white, yellow, red/pink, blue/purple and green or brown. Within each colour, you will first find the flowers with a maximum of four petals, then those with five, then those with more than five and finally those with bilaterally symmetrical flowers. So you know quickly which group you are in, there are corresponding symbols in the profile at the bottom of each page. This ingenious little book is sure to enliven even the most mundane walk on the dreariest of days.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Alexandra-Maria Klein chopped weeds for hours as a child and thus got to know herbs very well. Today, as an ecologist, she heads the professorship for nature conservation and landscape ecology at the University of Freiburg and looks at plants from the perspective of wild bees.

Julia Krohmer earned her first pocket money by cutting out dandelions between her parents' patio tiles. Later in geo-ecology studies in Bayreuth, during a doctorate in Frankfurt and various stays abroad, she turned to plants in a more positive way. As a botanist, she is full of admiration for their beauty, adaptability and diversity. Today Julia works for the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung in the area of science coordination and transfer.

Ants

Covers the biology and ecology of all 61 species occurring in Britain and Ireland.

Includes extensively illustrated keys and distribution maps.

Also offers an account of exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings.

Ants are found everywhere from garden to mountaintop. They are at their most diverse in the tropics, but that does not make the 61 species of our part of the world any less fascinating or significant. As social insects, ants have fascinating life histories. Ecologically, they are highly important and influential. From tiny guest ants living in the nests of bigger species to gigantic wood ant mounds with hundreds of thousands of workers, there is a lifetime of possibility for study.

This important new edition of Ants covers the general biology and ecology of species occurring in Britain and Ireland, including the Channel Islands. The book presents photographs and descriptions of workers for all 61 species on the regional list, together with distribution maps. There is also an account of some of the exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings. The extensively illustrated keys deal with workers, queens and males of all the species. These have been specially written and are the first comprehensive keys since those of the first edition 30 years ago. There are also quick-check keys to workers and nests, as well as a detailed list of kit suppliers and an extensive reference list.

Ants are among the most familiar of insects and can form a crucial part of their ecosystem, having an impact far greater than their small individual size would lead us to expect. This book is for anyone wanting to learn more about these endlessly interesting insects, by reading and by applying some of the methods discussed to make new discoveries.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Gary Skinner began a degree in chemistry but soon decided to swap to biology and obtained a degree in 1972. He then went on to study the wood ant Formica rufa for his PhD. After this he went on to a career in teaching until his retirement in 2008. In the 80s whilst on a trip to Skomer he saw a little book on British buttercups and thought 'I could do one on ants'. That was published in 1987 and its success led him to think about a Naturalists’ Handbook, which came out in 1996.

Andrew Jarman has had a life-long fascination with ants. He claims that his earliest memories are of discovering there were three types of ants in his parents’ garden (black, red, and yellow) before he learned to walk. Over the decades since he has accumulated an extensive field and taxonomic knowledge of ants in Britain, as well as gaining a working knowledge of the ant faunas of continental Europe, Central and North America, and South-East Asia. In his day job, he is a lecturer and researcher in biomedical sciences, specialising in the neurobiology of the laboratory fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.

Clinging to the Edge

A Year in the Life of a Little Tern Colony RICHARD BOON

Thorough exploration of the ecology of the Little Tern, and the history of its conservation.

Unflinchingly presents the challenges of conserving and protecting a threatened seabird.

Follows a single colony throughout one season in intimate and previously unseen detail.

A summer migrant to Europe from West Africa, the Little Tern is one of our most threatened and most captivating seabirds. This book is the story of one breeding season at the Beacon Ponds colony on the North Sea coast, near Spurn Point in East Yorkshire. In elegant and evocative prose it offers an intimate portrait of these endangered birds, covering everything from foraging and breeding to predators and conservation.

The colony’s small size means that it can be monitored, protected and documented in an unusual level of detail. Close observation of the birds’ behaviour and an in-depth knowledge of the natural history of their environment raise important questions about how and why we seek to preserve and protect species for whose decline we are ourselves largely responsible. A tight focus on the spectacular natural, geographical and cultural headland that is Spurn Point also provides new insights into the ecology of Little Terns. Covering the progress of the colony month by month, through an eventful spring and summer, Clinging to the Edge brings these charismatic and endearing birds vividly to life.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Richard Boon is chair of the Beacon Ponds Little Tern Project Management Committee. A retired academic who now volunteers for Spurn Observatory Trust, he also sits on its research committee. Richard has volunteered for the BTO and the RSPB, and has made occasional contributions to the birding press, most recently in British Birds.

Fenland Nature

Beautiful and striking photographs illustrate the natural history and landscape of the Fens.

Insightful and engaging narrative covers Fenland ecology and history, including the search for flagship and specialist species.

A concise, accessible, and diversely sourced natural history of the region.

A summary of viewpoints that recognises the current crisis in the future of the Fens.

This book showcases the natural history and landscape of the Fens, an area now responsible for a third of Britain’s food production and worth over £3 billion to the economy every year. It describes the geology and geography across the Fenland Basin over the last 14,000 years, a period dominated by the flux of wetlands and movement of water. The human relationship with this landscape is traced through history: from Mesolithic hunters to the prosperity of a medieval economy based on the currency of eels, through the taming and draining of the vast wetlands, to modern farming on an industrial scale.

While recognising that only a fraction of the Fens is left, Fenland Nature celebrates the breadth of wildlife still to be found in the region, from vast flocks of visiting wildfowl in the winter months, to rare and specialised plants and insects – all illustrated with detailed and evocative photographs.

The book concludes by contemplating an uncertain future where there are possibilities for a sustainable agricultural industry alongside increasing biodiversity, requiring new ways of thinking and working with the land. The fenland landscape is a microcosm of the huge global challenges caused by habitat loss, ecological degradation and climate change. If solutions can be found to these complex issues in the Fens, then there is hope that these can also apply to similar places across the world.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Simon Stirrup lives on the edge of the Fens with his wife and son. He has a degree in Zoology and is a retired computer consultant. He has been a keen birdwatcher and wildlife enthusiast all his life. He is widely travelled but in recent years has focused on the UK, particularly the Cambridgeshire Fens. Simon’s photography has been used by numerous publications and organisations, including British Birds, National Geographic, the National Trust and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

Duncan Poyser grew up in the Vale of York, before moving to the Fens a quarter of a century ago. An obsessive interest in birds from early childhood led to an ecology-based degree, and a teaching qualification followed. After a year working in New Zealand schools, he wandered globally for several more. Returning to the UK, he worked as an ecological consultant in the Scottish Highlands and Outer Hebrides before settling back in the Fens.

QGIS for Ecologists

An Introduction to Mapping for Ecological Surveys

Step-by-step instructions help the beginner master this powerful open-source mapping software.

Learn how to make maps commonly used in ecological consultancy and conservation.

Include access to downloadable data for use in producing the example maps described.

This book teaches the basic stages of mapping for ecological projects. It uses QGIS, an open source system, as this is the most accessible platform to produce maps for reports. The book guides the beginner mapmaker through production of maps for the day-to-day projects of ecologists working in consultancy. If you don’t know where to start or how to use QGIS, this is the practical guide for you. There is no jargon, just everything you require to create the desired maps and to extract from them all the information that you’ll need for reporting.

You will learn how to create several different sorts of maps frequently employed in ecological reports:

-basic survey map

-aerial imagery survey map

-designated sites map

-desk-study map

-protected species map

-habitats map

As a part of this you will also discover how to download third-party maps and datasets, create your own data, geo-reference images and import GPX files into QGIS. Weblinks allow access to downloadable data for use in producing the maps described. The book also includes workflows that you can emulate for your own projects, ensuring that it will remain a helpful tool long after you have completed all the exercises.

Ideal for those working in ecological consultancy and conservation, as well as students with an understanding of ecology and surveying but no background or training in QGIS, this handy book will also be a great help to those needing to refresh their GIS skills and/or looking for workflows to follow.

Bird Pellets

A Complete Photographic Guide

Tips for identifying bird pellets, from raptors to songbirds. Showcases the remains of prey species, from small mammals to invertebrates.

Offers detailed instructions on how to dissect and analyse bird pellets.

Packed with over 500 photographs.

This book is the first comprehensive guide to bird pellets, the undigested remains of food that form together into a ball or sausage-like shape and are regurgitated. It showcases the range of pellets that different bird species produce, including owls, hawks, falcons, corvids such as ravens and magpies, as well as waders – and even garden birds! The common items found in them, such as small mammal skulls and bones, are analysed in detail, with the discussion accompanied by numerous colour illustrations.

The book progresses methodically from an introduction to pellets, covering what they are and how they are formed, to instructions on dissection and analysis and how this can be used in research, followed by a closer look at the pellets of each bird species in turn – from the golden eagle to the dipper. We learn how to identify the remains of small mammals including bats, as well as reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and of course other birds.

Dissecting bird pellets and identifying what is inside can be an important tool for discovering what birds are feeding on as part of more detailed diet studies. It is also an activity often delivered at family-friendly events or in schools by wildlife organisations. Extracting information from pellets also has sound scientific value: while it does not capture everything a bird has been eating, it still goes a long way in revealing the diet of birds and how this may change over time, in different habitats and different parts of the world.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ed Drewitt is a professional naturalist, wildlife detective, and broadcaster for the BBC. He has been studying urban Peregrines for over 15 years, and specialises in colour ringing their chicks, and identifying what they have been eating.

Countryside History

The Life and Legacy of Oliver Rackham

A unique, far-reaching tribute to the late Professor Oliver Rackham.

Wide-ranging contributions from the worldʼs leading landscape and countryside historians.

Offers fresh understandings of the importance of heritage landscapes in the context of climate change and rampant development.

Like one of the ancient trees he wrote about so elegantly and perceptively, Oliver Rackham’s roots run deep while his influence branches far. He was undoubtedly the leading scholar in landscape history and historical ecology, and his work continues to resonate not just with his peers but with a much wider public audience too. His combination of extensive archival research, meticulous fieldwork and place-name analysis were truly ground-breaking. He not only changed the way we think about the landscape; he in fact altered that landscape in turn – enriching, clarifying, bringing it to life.

This book, which honours Rackham’s memory, is a unique collection of contributions from leading global authorities on countryside and landscape history. A number of chapters come from individuals who were his friends and collaborators, and they each share a debt to his scholarship and methods. Ranging all over Europe from Bia?owie?a Forest in Poland to the Mediterranean, and across the world from New England to northern Japan, the wealth of perspectives gathered here makes for a diverse and weighty discussion.

Collectively, the contributions represent an acknowledgment of Rackham’s huge impact and influence at the same time as offering a benchmark for current thinking in countryside history worldwide. This volume will appeal to researchers, postgraduate students, final-year undergraduates, lecturers and scholars on the one hand, but also to anyone who loves the countryside and is fascinated by its complex history. As we lose irreplaceable heritage landscapes to climate change and development, an understanding of what they are and what they mean only becomes more vital.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Ian D. Rotherham is Emeritus Professor at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University. He is an authority on landscape history and particularly on the history, heritage and ecology of woodlands and peatlands. He has published widely, including over 500 academic research papers, around 50 books and many hundreds of popular articles.

Jennifer Moody is an archaeologist of the Aegean. She has worked on the island of Crete for over 40 years, where she has directed four archaeological surveys and consulted for many more. She is an advocate for landscape conservation and preservation of cultural heritage in Greece and elsewhere. In 1989 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, the so-called genius grant, for her research. In 1996 she and Oliver Rackham co-authored The Making of the Cretan Landscape, for which they won the Runciman prize.

A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Romania

LÁSZLÓ RÁKOSY

Covers in detail all 202 species of butterflies found in Romania.

Illustrated throughout with live photographs and prepared plates, offering the best of both worlds. Wide-ranging introduction offers biogeographical context and discussion of conservation.

Through its geographical position, varied topography, particular climate and complex cultural history, Romania has managed to sustain enormously rich biodiversity. Traditional practices, which have survived longer than in most other parts of Europe, have allowed the preservation of large areas of natural habitat, little altered by human activity. All this is reflected in the breadth of lepidoptera encountered in the country – from the dazzling Freyer’s Purple Emperor to the elusive Moorland Clouded Yellow, from the almost bird-like Great Banded Grayling to the diminutive Osiris Blue.

This book considers all the species (and subspecies) of butterflies known to occur in Romania. This identification guide to the butterflies of Romania is set out in a format easy to understand not only by specialists but also for the more general naturalist or butterfly enthusiast. An expansive introduction covers the various life stages (ovum, larva, pupa and imago), biology and ecology, as well as protection and conservation, and butterfly research. The next section identifies the 14 most important habitat types frequented by butterflies in Romania.

For each of the more than 200 species covered, information on taxonomy, identification, habitat, biology, conservation and distribution is presented. Each is illustrated with photographs from nature, primarily adult males and females, but also numerous images of the developmental stages. There follows a complete set of plates of prepared butterflies, displaying dorsal and ventral positions (upper and undersides) for both males and females. Finally, the male genital armature of several species are illustrated, primarily those difficult or impossible to identify using visual determination. The result is an attractive, practical and portable guide that not only helps identify the butterfly species of Romania, but also encourages the reader to more fully appreciate and protect them.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

László Rákosy is in the first rank of European lepidopterologists, well known throughout Europe for his work, and for his warm character which makes him an ambassador for public communication of the environmental and cultural importance of butterflies and their habitats. He is among those lucky few who have turned their passion into a job. A Professor at Babe?-Bolyai University, he is the author of over 200 scientific articles and numerous books about butterflies. László is active in nature conservation and works to raise public awareness of the natural world.

The Vanishing Mew Gull

A Guide to the Bird Names of the Western Palaearctic

RAY REEDMAN

A comprehensive dictionary of bird names of the Western Palaearctic.

Vernacular and scientific names are covered, as well as their history.

Classification and nomenclature discussed, as well as the evolution and development of modern names.

A rich and detailed consideration of the names and naming of the birds of the Western Palaearctic.

PRAISE FOR THE VANISHING MEW GULL

Ray Reedman has produced a comprehensive etymology of both the English vernacular and scientific names of all Western Palearctic bird species. If you have ever wondered who Stejneger was, or what is the origin of the name Scoter (if known!), this is the book for you. This is a unique resource for anyone interested in how the names have evolved, what they mean, and how errors and misunderstandings have sometimes been perpetuated in the names we now use.

Neil Bucknell, Vice President, British Ornithologist's Union

The Vanishing Mew Gull explains in a fascinating way the origin of both the common and scientific names of our birds. After Reedman’s explanation they all make sense, and it makes you look at birds in a different way. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in ornithology.

Hein van Grouw, Senior Curator, Bird Group, The Natural History Museum at Tring

BIOGRAPHICAL

NOTE

After graduating in French in 1962, Ray Reedman taught at an independent school, retiring as Senior Master in 1998. He has since focused on a variety of activities related to ornithology, including organising programmes, courses and field trips. He has also travelled and birded extensively abroad. His 2016 publication, Lapwings, Loons and Lousy Jacks: The How and Why of Bird Names, blends his love of language, literature and history with his enthusiasm for all matters ornithological.

Purposeful Birdwatching

Getting to Know Birds Better

Sets out how to watch birds with greater purpose, focus and effectiveness.

Expert insights into equipment, techniques and how to maximise enjoyment of birding.

Richly illustrated with sketches and notes from years of fieldwork.

This book explains how to make your birdwatching more enjoyable, fulfilling and worthwhile. Illustrated throughout with the author’s sketches and fieldnotes, this is a call to appreciate birds for themselves.

PRAISE FOR PURPOSEFUL BIRDWATCHING

Warm, meditative, insightful and wise – words and art reflecting so charmingly the author himself and an extraordinary life absorbed in wild birds and bird people. A book and a conservationist to cherish.

Conor Mark Jameson, naturalist and author of Finding W.H. Hudson and Silent Spring Reevisited

20 years ago I wrote a book called How to Be a Bad Birdwatcher. At last Rob – who better? – has written the sequel. Here is a book that tells you, calmly, generously and quite certainly, how to be a good birdwatcher.

Simon Barnes, author and journalist

This is a lovely book... If all those who look through binoculars were as thoughtful as this author, and wrote as well, the world, and the world of birding, would be a better place. A very good read.

Mark Avery, author and environmental campaigner

Rob Hume draws on a lifetime of really looking at, and thinking about birds, to distil an inspiring collection of stories and observations which he, with great modesty, proposes might benefit or be of interest to any birdwatcher, from the absolute beginner to the most seasoned old hand. Illustrated throughout with the author’s own sketches and paintings,  PurposefulBirdwatching offers a wealth of thoughtful ideas that will enhance your appreciation of birds and at the same time celebrate the unique, almost magical role they play in the natural world.

Killian Mullarney, ornithologist and bird artist

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Having watched birds since childhood, Rob Hume began a career with the RSPB doing fieldwork and finished up as editor of BIRDS magazine from 1989 to 2009. Worlds within Worlds

An Introduction to Microscopes

A comprehensive beginner's guide to using a microscope. Step-by-step chapters make the techniques and skills easy to learn.

Richly illustrated with instructive diagrams and photographs.

A microscope is a gateway to another dimension, allowing us to explore the fascinating realm of microorganisms. From the colonies of green algae that grace the cover of this book, to bacteria, cellular structures and protozoa – an entire world of life, almost limitless and yet invisible to the naked eye, awaits through the lens of a microscope.

Until now there has been no book that offers easy access to the exciting and mind-expanding world of microscopy. Practical, compact and accessible, this guide is written especially for beginners. It provides help in learning the correct use of a microscope and the production of preparations. Structured clearly in 25 short chapters, it allows the reader to progress in manageable stages. Each step focuses on a particular theme, introducing the relevant techniques. From illumination to observation, from slide preparation to staining, this book supplies all the building blocks needed for skilled use of microscopes.

With this step-by-step approach, the way into the wonderful visual universe of the miniature becomes very simple, even if your first microscope is only a budget model: most of the activities suggested here work using a basic instrument without the more sophisticated accessories. Indeed, the history of microscopy shows that discoveries of great significance have been possible even with rather modest equipment. And this is just as true today. Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, this book is the perfect companion as you discover the richness of microscopic life.

PRAISE FOR WORLDS WITHIN WORLDS

The Painted Stork

Exploring Ecology and Conservation in India

Presents remarkable insights into the Painted Stork from close and sustained observation.

Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams. An accessible introduction to key concepts and issues in ecology and conservation.

Covering all aspects of Painted Stork ecology, behaviour, conservation and their relationship with humans, this accessible and lavishly illustrated monograph contains a wealth of insights.

PRAISE FOR THE PAINTED STORK

Urfi is an accomplished scientist, and a passionate and dedicated naturalist with a special interest in birds. He also hails from a family of distinguished litterateurs and poets, and this combination permeates this easy-to-read, yet technically informative and elegant book. Urfi draws upon decades of his own research on the Painted Stork, but also seamlessly places it in the broader context of ecology and conservation, especially how organisms are dealing with living in an increasingly urban, human-dominated landscape. The result is a book that will be informative for scientists, useful for conservationists, and delightfully inspiring for young budding naturalists.

Prof Amitabh Joshi, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research

The Painted Stork weaves together folklore, the author’s long-term scientific research, and his perceptive observations as a naturalist to tell the story of an iconic South Asian bird. Abdul Jamil Urfi uses his research on this bird to inform some important conservation initiatives.

Robert Montgomerie, Queen’s University

The book is scholarly but immensely accessible. You will learn a lot about this species but inevitably lots about habitat and birdlife, conservation and urban dwelling wildlife... Bravo!

Bo Beolens, fatbirder.com

An extraordinary tour-de-force, Urfi brings his erudite scholarship and quiet passion for all aquatic birds to culminate in this remarkable portrayal of the Painted Stork.

Prof. Anindya Sinha, Indian Institute of Science

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants

Identifying the difficult species of Britain and Ireland

Covers all the main difficult groups of Britain and Ireland in a clear, accessible style.

The tabular keys are much easier to use than conventional dichotomous keys.

Key diagnostic features are illustrated in simple, nononsense diagrams.

This book offers a fresh approach to difficult plants that will make you become a more confident botanist. Unlike other wildflower guides, it will help you understand why some plants are trickier to identify than others.

PRAISE FOR FRUSTRATING FLOWERS AND PUZZLING PLANTS

This hugely helpful book teases out the trickiest groups and adds the kind of nuanced detail on growth form, morphology and habitat that the ‘standard’ books can’t deliver. It is the closest a book could get to actually being in a room with a plant ID specialist.

Dr Sarah Dalrymple, Co-Chair, Skills and Training Committee, Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland

This well-illustrated, accessible field guide to the UK’s difficult plant groups is a joy to read and easy to use. This book will be appreciated by both casual and specialist botanists because of its clear, engaging, authoritative prose, focused detail and accurate illustrations.

Dr Colin Clubbe, Senior Research Leader, Kew Gardens

How many times have we snapped our wildflower guides shut in frustration, defeated by docks or muddled by marsh-orchids? Well - dare I say it - this book might just finally be the answer we’ve all been waiting for. It's beautifully illustrated, easy to use and so desperately needed.

Leif Bersweden, author of Where the Wildflowers Grow

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants is a fabulous new guide for understanding those tricky groups that you have left at the end of your visit. I love the summary tabular character matrices, the clear illustrations and quirky facts dropped into each introduction. I thoroughly endorse this fabulous book and look forward to sharing it with my own students.

Sue Dancey, Identiplant Tutor
