Birds and Flowers
An Intimate 50 Million Year Relationship
JEFF OLLERTON
Shows the true significance of birds as pollinators. Offers examples from all around the world. Debunks myths, reveals little-known truths and offers ingenious new perspectives.
Most people are familiar with hummingbirds and the balletic ways in which they feed on flowers. But did you know that these kinds of relationships first evolved at least 50 million years ago? And that nowadays at least 64 families of birds include species that act as pollinators, for tens of thousands of different plants? Not only of great ecological significance, such interactions have been the inspiration for art and literature, for stories about gods and warriors, and for branding guitars and even cheese.
This is the first book that deals with bird pollination in all of its diversity. It looks beyond the iconic hummingbirds, sunbirds and honeyeaters, to assess the real breadth and significance of avian involvement with flowers. Pollinating birds have intricate lives that are often highly dependent on flowers, and the plants themselves are at the whim of birds for their reproduction. This makes them crucial players within many ecosystems, but these relationships are threatened by disease, habitat destruction and climate change. Yet there are also optimistic stories to be told about conservation and restoration projects that reveal the commitment of scientists, conservationists and the public to preserving these ecologically vital connections.
This groundbreaking study reclaims birds as pollinators. It rescues them from being mere novelties of (especially Neotropical) natural history, and explores their interaction with flowers in all its significance. These associations carry huge importance in the world’s ecosystems, and are the drivers and objects of evolution. In addition, as a source of cultural inspiration, with a history stretching back millennia, they are part of the ongoing relationship between humanity and the rest of nature.
PRAISE FOR BIRDS AND FLOWERS
Full of wonder and fascination - the author’s passion and expertise exude from every page.
Professor John Reilly, author of The Ascent of Birds
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
As a scientist and educator for over 30 years, Jeff Ollerton has developed an international profile in the field of biodiversity, focused particularly on understanding and conserving plant-pollinator interactions. His highly-cited, ground-breaking research has been used by national and international agencies to support efforts to conserve pollinators and their pollination services.

An Introduction to Microscopes
BRUNO KREMER
A comprehensive beginner's guide to using a microscope. Step-by-step chapters make the techniques and skills easy to learn.
Richly illustrated with instructive diagrams and photographs.
A microscope is a gateway to another dimension, allowing us to explore the fascinating realm of microorganisms. From the colonies of green algae that grace the cover of this book, to bacteria, cellular structures and protozoa – an entire world of life, almost limitless and yet invisible to the naked eye, awaits through the lens of a microscope.
Until now there has been no book that offers easy access to the exciting and mind-expanding world of microscopy. Practical, compact and accessible, this guide is written especially for beginners. It provides help in learning the correct use of a microscope and the production of preparations. Structured clearly in 25 short chapters, it allows the reader to progress in manageable stages. Each step focuses on a particular theme, introducing the relevant techniques. From illumination to observation, from slide preparation to staining, this book supplies all the building blocks needed for skilled use of microscopes.
With this step-by-step approach, the way into the wonderful visual universe of the miniature becomes very simple, even if your first microscope is only a budget model: most of the activities suggested here work using a basic instrument without the more sophisticated accessories. Indeed, the history of microscopy shows that discoveries of great significance have been possible even with rather modest equipment. And this is just as true today. Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, this book is the perfect companion as you discover the richness of microscopic life.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Bruno P. Kremer studied biology, chemistry and geology, and was a professor at the University of Cologne until 2012. He has published numerous books on topics ranging from natural history to environmental education and regional studies. His work has been translated into 14 languages.

Purposeful Birdwatching
Getting to Know Birds Better
ROB HUME
Sets out how to watch birds with greater purpose, focus and effectiveness.
Expert insights into equipment, techniques and how to maximise enjoyment of birding.
Richly illustrated with sketches and notes from years of fieldwork.
‘I remember well my first Bewick’s swans, which I bumped into one November day not far from home. They looked at me, unsure whether or not to fly into the fog, as I tried to get as close as I dared. … What is it, exactly, that can, many years later, recall such emotionally charged birding moments so vividly to mind? I can’t really remember my birthdays at all, but my first green woodpecker and my first jay are firmly embedded. And with some of these things, the place it happened is equally important.’
With its mix of memoir, gentle advice and enthusiastic advocacy, this book sets out a case for purposeful birdwatching. Along the way, it explains how to make your birding more enjoyable, fulfilling and worthwhile. Using ideas and techniques from his five decades of experience, Rob Hume reveals how an ever-enquiring approach to observation of the natural world can yield unexpected treasures – whether this be something rare or simply new details concealed in the apparently everyday. From the basics of equipment and methods, through the mysteries of seawatching, to special insights on the likes of honey-buzzards and goshawks, and a focus of some iconic sites, his breadth of knowledge ensures there is something for every curious birder.
Illuminatingly illustrated throughout with the author’s sketches and fieldnotes, at its heart this is a call to appreciate birds for themselves, as individuals and as species, and not merely as numbers on a list. It will help lead beginners towards a practical and more satisfying hobby, while also being of great interest to experienced birders who will relate to the content through their own experiences.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Having watched birds since childhood, Rob Hume began a career with the RSPB doing fieldwork and finished up as editor of BIRDS magazine from 1989 to 2009. He was a member of the Editorial Board of British Birds and Chairman of the British Birds Rarities Committee. He has written best-selling bird guides and led numerous groups on wildlife holidays in Europe and Africa.

Countryside History
The Life and Legacy of Oliver Rackham
IAN D. ROTHERHAM, JENNIFER MOODY
A unique, far-reaching tribute to the late Professor Oliver Rackham.
Wide-ranging contributions from the worldʼs leading landscape and countryside historians.
Offers fresh understandings of the importance of heritage landscapes in the context of climate change and rampant development.
Like one of the ancient trees he wrote about so elegantly and perceptively, Oliver Rackham’s roots run deep while his influence branches far. He was undoubtedly the leading scholar in landscape history and historical ecology, and his work continues to resonate not just with his peers but with a much wider public audience too. His combination of extensive archival research, meticulous fieldwork and place-name analysis were truly ground-breaking. He not only changed the way we think about the landscape; he in fact altered that landscape in turn – enriching, clarifying, bringing it to life.
This book, which honours Rackham’s memory, is a unique collection of contributions from leading global authorities on countryside and landscape history. A number of chapters come from individuals who were his friends and collaborators, and they each share a debt to his scholarship and methods. Ranging all over Europe from Bia?owie?a Forest in Poland to the Mediterranean, and across the world from New England to northern Japan, the wealth of perspectives gathered here makes for a diverse and weighty discussion.
This volume will appeal to researchers, postgraduate students, final-year undergraduates, lecturers and scholars on the one hand, but also to anyone who loves the countryside and is fascinated by its complex history.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Ian D. Rotherham is Emeritus Professor at the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield, UK. He is an authority on landscape history and particularly on the history, heritage and ecology of woodlands and peatlands. He has published widely, including over 500 academic research papers, around 50 books and many hundreds of popular articles.
Jennifer Moody is an archaeologist of the Aegean, specializing in ceramic fabric analysis and landscape and paleo-climate reconstruction. She is an advocate for landscape conservation and preservation of cultural heritage in Greece and elsewhere. In 1989 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her research. In 1996 she and Oliver Rackham co-authored The Making of the Cretan Landscape, for which they won the Runciman prize.

The Vanishing Mew Gull
A Guide to the Bird Names of the Western Palaearctic
RAY REEDMAN
A comprehensive dictionary of bird names of the Western Palaearctic.
Vernacular and scientific names are covered, as well as their history.
Classification and nomenclature discussed, as well as the evolution and development of modern names.
Modern taxonomic studies have created a revolution in the genetic sequencing of bird families and have resulted in confusing changes to the names of many species, particularly in the scientific nomenclature. This book presents all the birds of the Western Palaearctic under the latest taxonomic scheme followed by the International Ornithological Committee. The geographic scope embraces about 10% of the world’s bird species, covering almost 1,100 in total. Each species is considered in order, discussing aspects of both vernacular and scientific names, as well as supplementary information such as status, appearance and history. An introduction elucidates the history of the linguistic elements concerned, taking into account the major languages of Europe, and offers a condensed analysis of the ‘authority’ for any bird names.
Good dictionaries of avian names are thin on the ground: most are only partial in coverage, and the majority are word-centric. Hence, British and European birds have long lacked a work that truly wraps the names – both vernacular and scientific – around the birds themselves.
This reference will be appeal to any bird enthusiast, but also to those seeking out the background on particular species or simply trying to make some sense of what can seem like a somewhat confused scenario. Filling a critical gap, it will be a useful tool for any student of ornithology, whatever their level of experience.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
After graduating in French in 1962, Ray Reedman taught at an independent school, retiring as Senior Master in 1998. He has since focused on a variety of activities related to ornithology, including organising programmes, courses and field trips. He has also travelled and birded extensively abroad. His 2016 publication, Lapwings, Loons and Lousy Jacks: The How and Why of Bird Names, blends his love of language, literature and history with his enthusiasm for all matters ornithological

Bird Pellets
A Complete Photographic Guide
ED DREWITT
Tips for identifying bird pellets, from raptors to songbirds. Showcases the remains of prey species, from small mammals to invertebrates.
Offers detailed instructions on how to dissect and analyse bird pellets.
Packed with over 500 photographs.
This book is the first comprehensive guide to bird pellets, the undigested remains of food that form together into a ball or sausage-like shape and are regurgitated. It showcases the range of pellets that different bird species produce, including owls, hawks, falcons, corvids such as ravens and magpies, as well as waders – and even garden birds! The common items found in them, such as small mammal skulls and bones, are analysed in detail, with the discussion accompanied by numerous colour illustrations.
The book progresses methodically from an introduction to pellets, covering what they are and how they are formed, to instructions on dissection and analysis and how this can be used in research, followed by a closer look at the pellets of each bird species in turn – from the golden eagle to the dipper. We learn how to identify the remains of small mammals including bats, as well as reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and of course other birds.
Dissecting bird pellets and identifying what is inside can be an important tool for discovering what birds are feeding on as part of more detailed diet studies. It is also an activity often delivered at family-friendly events or in schools by wildlife organisations. Extracting information from pellets also has sound scientific value: while it does not capture everything a bird has been eating, it still goes a long way in revealing the diet of birds and how this may change over time, in different habitats and different parts of the world.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Ed Drewitt is a professional naturalist, wildlife detective, and broadcaster for the BBC. He has been studying urban Peregrines for over 15 years, and specialises in colour ringing their chicks, and identifying what they have been eating.

A Field Guide to Urban Plants
The Flora of Pavements, Walls and Waste Ground
ALEXANDRA-MARIA KLEIN, JULIA KROHMER
Introduces the most common weeds of pavement and kerb.
Clearly organised according to growth form and flower colour.
Almost 100 species described and illustrated.
Have you ever wondered exactly what those ‘weeds’ are growing along the kerb or between the cracks in the pavement? Not the pampered plants of parks, front gardens and herbaceous borders, but simply those that exist everywhere and nowhere in particular: the true survivors, the botanical opportunists. In this handy guide, we introduce the most commonplace flowers, shrubs, grasses, mosses and ferns that are to be found on the street, and show the main characteristics by which you can recognise them. Soon you’ll be more alert than ever to the rebellious species of tarmac, wall and gutter as they defy weedkiller, climate change and dog wee.
So you can identify the plants you discover in your town as readily as possible, the species are arranged according to their growth form. The book starts with the largest group – herbaceous plants – followed by a few woody plants, grasses, mosses and ferns. The first group is divided again according to flower colour: white, yellow, red/pink, blue/purple and green or brown. Within each colour, you will first find the flowers with a maximum of four petals, then those with five, then those with more than five and finally those with bilaterally symmetrical flowers. So you know quickly which group you are in, there are corresponding symbols in the profile at the bottom of each page. This ingenious little book is sure to enliven even the most mundane walk on the dreariest of days.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Alexandra-Maria Klein chopped weeds for hours as a child and thus got to know herbs very well. Today, as an ecologist, she heads the professorship for nature conservation and landscape ecology at the University of Freiburg and looks at plants from the perspective of wild bees.
Julia Krohmer earned her first pocket money by cutting out dandelions between her parents' patio tiles. Later in geo-ecology studies in Bayreuth, during a doctorate in Frankfurt and various stays abroad, she turned to plants in a more positive way. As a botanist, she is full of admiration for their beauty, adaptability and diversity. Today Julia works for the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung in the area of science coordination and transfer.

A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Romania
LÁSZLÓ RÁKOSY
Covers in detail all 202 species of butterflies found in Romania.
Illustrated throughout with live photographs and prepared plates, offering the best of both worlds.
Wide-ranging introduction offers biogeographical context and discussion of conservation.
Through its geographical position, varied topography, particular climate and complex cultural history, Romania has managed to sustain enormously rich biodiversity. Traditional practices, which have survived longer than in most other parts of Europe, have allowed the preservation of large areas of natural habitat, little altered by human activity. All this is reflected in the breadth of lepidoptera encountered in the country – from the dazzling Freyer’s Purple Emperor to the elusive Moorland Clouded Yellow, from the almost bird-like Great Banded Grayling to the diminutive Osiris Blue.
This book considers all the species (and subspecies) of butterflies known to occur in Romania, and is set out in a format easy to understand not only by specialists but also for the more general naturalist or butterfly enthusiast. An expansive introduction covers the various life stages (ovum, larva, pupa and imago), biology and ecology, as well as protection and conservation, and butterfly research. The next section identifies the 14 most important habitat types frequented by butterflies in Romania.
For each of the more than 200 species covered, information on taxonomy, identification, habitat, biology, conservation and distribution is presented. The result is an attractive, practical and portable guide that not only helps identify the butterfly species of Romania, but also encourages the reader to more fully appreciate and protect them.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
László Rákosy is among those lucky few who have turned their passion into a job. From childhood he was fascinated by the world of plants and animals, especially butterflies, motivated by the many field trips made with his parents around their hometown of Sighi?oara. A Professor at Babe?-Bolyai University, he is the author of over 200 scientific articles and numerous books about butterflies. László is active in nature conservation and works to raise public awareness of the natural world.

Ants
GARY J. SKINNER, ANDREW P. JARMAN
Covers the biology and ecology of all 61 species occurring in Britain and Ireland.
Includes extensively illustrated keys and distribution maps.
Also offers an account of exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings.
Ants are found everywhere from garden to mountaintop. They are at their most diverse in the tropics, but that does not make the 61 species of our part of the world any less fascinating or significant. As social insects, ants have fascinating life histories. Ecologically, they are highly important and influential. From tiny guest ants living in the nests of bigger species to gigantic wood ant mounds with hundreds of thousands of workers, there is a lifetime of possibility for study.
This edition of Ants covers the general biology and ecology of species occurring in Britain and Ireland, including the Channel Islands. The book presents photographs and descriptions of workers for all 61 species on the regional list, together with distribution maps. There is also an account of some of the exotic species that may turn up in heated buildings. The extensively illustrated keys deal with workers, queens and males of all the species. These have been specially written and are the first comprehensive keys since those of the first edition 30 years ago. There are also quick-check keys to workers and nests, as well as a detailed list of kit suppliers and an extensive reference list.
Ants are among the most familiar of insects and can form a crucial part of their ecosystem, having an impact far greater than their small individual size would lead us to expect. This book is for anyone wanting to learn more about these endlessly interesting insects, by reading and by applying some of the methods discussed to make new discoveries.

The Painted Stork
Exploring Ecology and Conservation in India
ABDUL JAMIL URFI
Presents remarkable insights into the Painted Stork from close and sustained observation.
Richly illustrated with photographs and diagrams. An accessible introduction to key concepts and issues in ecology and conservation.
FRONTLIST TITLES
A charismatic and arresting bird, the Painted Stork inhabits the plains and wetlands of India and Southeast Asia. This near-threatened species provides a good model through which to explore a variety of ecology and conservation issues. As a colonial nester, it is also useful for considering questions related to evolution and the development of avian coloniality. The Painted Stork sometimes nests opportunistically in the middle of large cities – the Delhi Zoo colony, for instance, has been active since 1960. This offers a splendid opportunity to study the species at close range, as attested by this book's lively photographic component.
The Painted Stork is an important indicator of its wetland habitats, which themselves are highly threatened. Since environmental toxins, particularly organochlorine pesticides, travel rapidly along aquatic food chains, the study of piscivorous birds like the Painted Stork assumes special significance. Equally vulnerable today are the nesting colonies, located in marshes, village reservoirs and the wider countryside, including in urban settings. Perhaps because their natural nesting areas are becoming scarce due to habitat loss, colonial waterbirds look for suitable sites in parks and gardens. Hence, the behaviour of this species reflects changes occurring in its environment.
Birds also help us monitor the effects of global climate change, and one of the most significant dimensions of the Painted Stork is its dependence upon the monsoon. How exactly do these seasonal rains govern the food cycles in wetlands? And what happens when the monsoon fails? Covering all aspects of Painted Stork ecology, behaviour, conservation and its relationship with humans, this accessible monograph contains a wealth of new insights.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Abdul Jamil Urfi has been researching the ecology and conservation of Painted Stork in India for more than 35 years, with a special focus on the colony at Delhi Zoo. A professor of environmental studies at the University of Delhi, he has published three previous books, including Birds of India: A Literary Anthology (2011). He is a member of IUCN’s stork, ibis and spoonbill species survival commission.

PRAISE FOR SOUND IDENTIFICATION OF TERRESTRIAL MAMMALS OF BRITAIN & IRELAND
An essential aid to identifying those mysterious sounds in the undergrowth. There are bird sound guides aplenty, but mammals have long been poorly represented. This excellent and detailed publication plugs that gap.
Simon Elliott, Wildlife Sound Recording Society
This timely book is an excellent practical guide to the rapidly developing field of acoustic monitoring and how it can be used to study terrestrial mammals in the wild.
Dr Nigel Reeve, former Head of Ecology for The Royal Parks
Regardless of your level of expertise this book has something to offer, reminding us that sound, which plays such an important role in bird identification, is missing from the mammal toolbox, especially for the ultrasonic noises of the small mammals.
Derek Crawley, Vice Chair of the Mammal Society

Frustrating Flowers and Puzzling Plants
Identifying the difficult species of Britain and Ireland
JOHN M. WARREN
Covers all the main difficult groups of Britain and Ireland in a clear, accessible style.
The tabular keys are much easier to use than conventional dichotomous keys.
Key diagnostic features are illustrated in simple, nononsense diagrams.
This book offers a fresh approach to difficult plants that will make you become a more confident botanist. Unlike other wildflower guides, it will help you understand why some plants are trickier to identify than others.
PRAISE FOR FRUSTRATING FLOWERS AND PUZZLING PLANTS
This hugely helpful book teases out the trickiest groups and adds the kind of nuanced detail on growth form, morphology and habitat that the ‘standard’ books can’t deliver. I’ll be using it in my own work to finally tackle those difficult brambles, but will also use it as a teaching aid for my students to help them see into the subtler aspects of the botanical ID process. This is the closest a book could get to actually being in a room with a plant ID specialist.

Dr Sarah Dalrymple, Co-Chair, Skills and Training
Committee, Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland
This well-illustrated, accessible field guide to the UK’s difficult plant groups is a joy to read and easy to use. The reasons behind the plants’ complexity are clearly explained and the use of tabular keys is an excellent tool which directs you quickly to the most reasonable identification of your plant challenge. This book will be appreciated by both casual and specialist botanists because of its clear, engaging, authoritative prose, focused detail and accurate illustrations.
Dr Colin Clubbe, Senior Research Leader, Kew Gardens
How many times have we snapped our wildflower guides shut in frustration, defeated by docks or muddled by marsh-orchids? Well - dare I say it - this book might just finally be the answer we’ve all been waiting for. It's beautifully illustrated, easy to use and so desperately needed - I’m really excited to finally sort out those hawkbits and hawk’s-beards!
Leif Bersweden, author of Where the Wildflowers Grow

Finding W. H. Hudson
The Writer Who Came to Britain to Save the Birds
CONOR MARK JAMESON
The overdue, untold story of Hudsonʼs pioneering role as a campaigner, supporting the women who founded the RSPB.
New insights on the unschooled immigrant writernaturalist who dared to challenge the establishment. A timely and revelatory recognition of the extraordinary contribution of a once-revered and now neglected champion of early conservation.
A century after W.H. Hudson’s death, this long-overdue tribute to perhaps our most significant writer-naturalist and wildlife campaigner traces his path through a dramatic and turbulent era: from his journey to Britain from Argentina in 1874 to the unveiling of a monument and bird sanctuary in his honour 50 years later in the heart of Hyde Park.
PRAISE FOR FINDING W. H. HUDSON
If you read one new nature book this year make sure it's this one.
Matthew Oates, naturalist and author of In Pursuit of Butterflies
I'm blown away! This guy was way ahead of his time and totally amazing; the original urban birder.
David Lindo (The Urban Birder)
We are fortunate that Conor Mark Jameson proves to be the perfect biographer: expert both in ornithology and Hudson’s life story, but, even more important, possessing a passion for conservation which equals Hudson’s own, and shines through on every page.
Professor Diana Donald, author of Women Against Cruelty
Conor does this neglected campaigner a great service by bringing his struggles and achievements to our attention through assiduous and illuminating detective work.
Derek Niemann, Guardian Country Diarist
A great read for all those that care about nature and what it takes to save it.
Martin Harper, Interim CEO, Birdlife International
A charming and empathetic portrait of the man that for many epitomised empathy for birds.
Tim Birkhead, author of Birds and Us
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Conor Mark Jameson, an award-winning writer and naturalist, is author of Silent Spring Revisited, Shrewdunnit and Looking for the Goshawk. He is a feature writer and has written for television and radio. He is Scots-Irish, Ugandan-born and lives in a corner of the forest in Cambridgeshire.

The Atlas of Early Modern Wildlife
Britain and Ireland between the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution
LEE RAYE
Provides maps and analysis of the early modern distribution of more than 160 species.
Gathers observations by amateur naturalists, travellers and local historians from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries for the very first time.
Derived from over 10,000 records from over 200 primary sources.
The Atlas of Early Modern Wildlife draws on over 10,000 records to describe the distribution of wildlife in Britain and Ireland in the early modern period. Range maps of 153 species provide a baseline against which to discuss subsequent declines and extinctions as well as expansions and introductions.
PRAISE FOR THE ATLAS OF EARLY MODERN WILDLIFE
Indispensable for historians of natural history, environmental historians, and anyone interested in heritage and the natural world in Britain and Ireland. Valuable also for analysis of past taxonomy. Highly recommended.
Anna Marie Roos, Professor of the History of Science and Medicine, University of Lincoln
A stonker of a book.
Iolo Williams, naturalist and TV presenter
This book is a treasure trove for the curious naturalist and the next best thing in the absence of a TARDIS for discovering our wildlife of days long past. Lee's exhaustive research has paid off to create a tome that I'm sure will be a key reference text for ecological historians and nature restorationists alike.
Pete Cooper, naturalist and wilding ecologist
A well researched book that produces some real surprises. While it impossible to fully comprehended the wonder that was once our natural world this work demonstrates a little of its lost splendour. A must have for every natural history library of any size.
Derek Gow, author of Bringing Back the Beaver
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Lee Raye is an associate lecturer at the Open University and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society specialising in the history of wild animals and plants in preindustrial Britain and Ireland. Their translation of Robert Sibbald’s (1684) Wild Plants of Scotland and The Animals of Scotland was published in 2020.

Reflections
What Wildlife Needs and How to Provide it MARK AVERY
Provides a clear-eyed overview of nature conservation in Britain.
Offers many reasons for hope, alongside practical advice for the reader.
Highly entertaining read with a personal touch.
This informed, incisive and passionate commentary analyses what is wrong with certain ways we do wildlife conservation but explores some of its many successes too.
PRAISE FOR REFLECTIONS
If you love wildlife, read this, think about this, and act upon this.
Chris Packham, broadcaster and author of Back to Nature
Reflections is a work of distilled campaigning wisdom, told with the irrepressible optimism of a passionate advocate for nature who’s spent decades working tirelessly for wildlife.
Guy Shrubsole, environmental campaigner and author of The Lost Rainforests of Britain and Who Owns England?
Wise, knowledgeable, provocative and good humoured – Mark Avery is a national treasure.
Patrick Barkham, author of Wild Green Wonders and co-author of Wild Isles
Mark Avery has written a love letter to Nature. Yes it is well written and academically sound and all that you’d expect from a person of his track record, but the real pleasure of the book is that under all that patina of propriety and science you feel a Mr Darcy launching himself into the lake because nothing is more important to him than capturing our hearts with his passion.

A brilliant, thorough book full of insightful observation.
Derek Gow, author of Bringing Back the Beaver
Mark Avery has been a guiding light in conservation all my life; a constant north star. This important book bears witness to what we’ve lost, what we’ve done about it, what works and what we must do next.
Nicola Chester, author of On Gallows Down: Place, Protest and Belonging

Traffication
How Cars Destroy Nature and What We Can Do About It
PAUL DONALD
Does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals.
Uses the latest research to present a bold new explanation for the drastic loss of wildlife from our countryside. Offers a final message of hope – with a route to nature recovery.
The trillions of miles we drive each year are just as destructive to our natural environment as any of the better known threats, such as habitat loss or intensive farming. Traffication does for road traffic what Silent Spring did for agrochemicals: awakening us from our collective road-blindness and opening up a whole new chapter in conservation.
PRAISE FOR TRAFFICATION
Mind-blowing. Everyone who cares about nature should read this book.
James Rebanks, author ofThe Shepherd's Life andEnglish Pastoral
Paul Donald's Traffication is undoubtedly one of the environmental books of 2023.
Mark Cocker, author ofOne Midsummer's Day
A brilliant and comprehensive expose of what roads are doing to our wildlife: meticulous, persuasive, challenging and brilliantly researched.
Ben Macdonald, author ofRebirding andCornerstones
A very informed, impressive book. Essential for understanding the horrifying impact of roads and motor vehicles on nature.
Derek Gow, author ofBringing Back the Beaver
This book gives a well-researched and engagingly written account of what is arguably one of the major conservation issues of our time. In drawing attention to the greatly underestimated problems posed to wildlife and the wider environment by our ever-increasing road networks, traffic volumes and speeds, Paul Donald provides an important wake-up call, and importantly, discusses mitigating measures.
Professor Ian Newton FRS, ornithologist and conservationist
A really readable, clear and compelling case to put the countryside more at the heart of how we manage our transport system.
Richard Hebditch, UK Director, Transport and Environment
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Paul Donald worked in the research department of the RSPB for over twenty years, latterly as Principal Scientist, before moving to BirdLife International as Senior Scientist. He is a recipient of the prestigious ZSL/Marsh Award for Conservation Science and an Honorary Research Fellow of the University of Cambridge.

Big Bat Year
A Conservation Story
NILS BOUILLARD
Raises awareness of numerous important bat conservation initiatives around the globe.
The first ever competitive world tour centred on bats. Details some significant discoveries, including one species new to science and two rediscoveries.
During his itinerary covering just shy of 30 countries, Nils Bouillard was lucky enough to encounter no fewer than 400 species of bats. But beyond the impressive list, The Big Bat Year is a passionate tale about the people who are protecting bats all over the world.
PRAISE FOR BIG BAT YEAR
This book is as inspiring as it is informative. I hope it encourages others to follow in Nils's footsteps to celebrate each and every one of the 1450 species of bats and their intriguing, incredible lives.
Jon Hall, mammalwatching.com
Big Bat Year is an essential read for anyone interested in these fascinating creatures. With informative text boxes and stunning photographs, the book presents a captivating account of Nils’s travels while revealing the lives and habits of bats, dispelling common myths and highlighting their importance to the natural world. It is an immersive and enlightening journey that will leave readers with a newfound appreciation for these often-misunderstood creatures. An eagerly-anticipated book that does not disappoint!
Jon Russ, author of Bat Calls of Britain and Europe
Big Bat Year is a breath-taking and heartfelt story. It is well written, full of humor, and accompanied by stunning photographs. From now on, when I see a bat traverse the sky in the twilight, I will look at it in a different way, but I will also think of Nils and his incredible adventure.
Arjan Dwarshuis, conservationist, writer and Guinness World Record holder for most birds observed in a single year
Nils Bouillard’s quest to encounter as many bat species as possible makes birding big years seem a bit tame by comparison. Like all great obsessions, the bat year includes joys and disappointments, ecstasy and boredom. The highs and lows are all conveyed in this wonderful book. But this is more than an adventure story: it’s a book that shares a passion for often-misunderstood bats and why their fate is intermingled with ours.
Matthew
L.
Miller, author of Fishing Through the Apocalypse
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Nils Bouillard is a bat ecologist, bat conservation advocate and keen naturalist. He runs Barbastella Echology, specialising in bat sound analysis and training. He is passionate about improving our knowledge of bats through acoustics and sharing his love for these animals with the public.

Reconnection
Fixing our Broken Relationship with Nature MILES RICHARDSON
Explores our hidden links with nature through the new science of nature connectedness.
Challenges flawed thinking about how to connect with nature.
Offers simple, practical, positive steps for how we can all work towards a better world.
This book tells the story of how our relationship with nature got broken, why it matters and how to fix it. There is growing recognition that the root cause of wildlife loss and the warming climate is people’s disconnection from nature, yet solutions focus on technical fixes. Reconnection considers the problems scientifically.
PRAISE FOR RECONNECTION
Reconnection is a joy to read! It's a thought-provoking, inspiring book which highlights the ever increasing need to step outside and re-embrace the natural world into our lives. For the benefit of individual wellbeing, for communities and for the health of our environment, I sincerely hope everybody reads this and seeks a closer relationship to nature.
Megan McCubbin, conservationist and TV presenter
Richardson has produced a rich, timely and painstakingly researched account of what’s gone wrong in our relationship with nature and most urgently, how it might be fixed. It’s never mattered more, has it? I wish every policy maker, educators, economists and land managers would read and act on this book.
Amy-Jane Beer, naturalist and author of The Flow
This is a book with muscle. Not a softly aspirational book about belonging and nature but an incisively written work that examines the needs that humans have for seeing themselves as part of the natural world. Reconnection is an important book that moved me, made me think and, made me smile.
Sir Tim Smit, Co-founder and Vice Chairman of the Eden Project
A must-read for anyone who values the natural world and our connection to it.
Hilary McGrady, Director General at the National Trust
Fascinating, poignant and hopeful.
Dr. Mya-Rose Craig, author of Birdgirl

The Conservation and Biogeography of Amphibians in the Caribbean
NEFTALÍ RÍOS-LÓPEZ, HAROLD HEATWOLE
Reviews the ecology and biogeography of all the main Caribbean islands, and how these relate to the amphibians occurring there.
Considers all the threats facing Caribbean amphibians as well as the efforts being made to protect them, from reserves to legislation.
Offers an important baseline against which future amphibian conservation can be measured in the face of climate change, rising sea level and a burgeoning human population.
An expansive and detailed review of the biology of Caribbean amphibians, considering their threats, conservation and outlook in a changing world. Amphibians are the group of vertebrates undergoing the fastest rate of extinction; it is urgent that we understand the causes of this and find means of protecting them.
This landmark illustrated volume brings together the leading experts in the field. As well as offering an overview of the region as a whole, individual chapters are devoted to each island or island-group and the measures used to protect their amphibians through legislation or nature reserves. The biological background of insular biogeography, including its methods, analysis and results, is reviewed and applied specifically to the problems of Caribbean amphibians – this includes a re-examination of patterns and general ideas about the status of amphibians in the Anthropocene.
The Conservation and Biogeography of Amphibians in the Caribbean offers an important baseline against which future amphibian conservation can be measured in the face of climate change, rising sea level and a burgeoning human population. Covers over 300 species.

Treated Like Animals
Improving the Lives of the Creatures We Own, Eat and Use
ALICK SIMMONS
Explains how to make informed and intelligent choices about your own relationship with animals.
Gives practical and accessible insights into the various ways animals are used, and sets out alternatives. Advocates an approach to animal exploitation based on science and ethics.
Society’s arbitrary and inconsistent grouping of animals according to their ‘use’ means that we tolerate institutionalised inhumane exploitation for some while striving to protect others. The author advocates an approach to animal exploitation based on science and a universal ethics.
PRAISE FOR TREATED LIKE ANIMALS
This fascinating and engaging book challenges us all to make better lives for animals.
Chris Packham, broadcaster and author of Back to Nature
Marvellous: clear-headed, clear-sighted, rigorously unsentimental but compassionate, impeccably informed and researched, and downright wise. A companionable guide through complex and controversial territory. It deserves to be a canonical text in the welfare debate.
Charles Foster, author of Cry of the Wild and Being a Beast
A thoughtful, well-informed contribution to the animal-welfare and conservation debate.
Jane Dalton, The Independent
An important book at a crucial time in our lengthy relationship with the animals we exploit. Thoughtful, informative and firm, Simmons skilfully leads us through the complex maze of animal welfare issues and brings us to a stark realisation - for all that we have done, we must do better.
Professor Adam Hart, biologist, broadcaster and author of Unfit for Purpose
Animals are sentient beings, with capacity to experience both suffering and joy. Alick takes this as his starting point and brings his huge veterinary experience to this book, along with his honesty and desire for reform. The result makes for a highly informative and thought-provoking read.
Joyce D'Silva, Compassion in World Farming
