Increasing Financial Accessibility

At Place des Arts our goal is to increase engagement with, and accessibility to, the arts. We aim to make it possible for everyone to enjoy the benefits of participating in the arts regardless of their socioeconomic status.

To advance this goal, we raise funds through sponsorships, grants and our annual online auction (October 21 - November 4, 2023) which allows us to remove financial barriers through bursaries and program subsidies as well as low-cost and no-cost programs and events.

Bursaries

Anyone in our community, age 17 and under, who wishes to take classes or lessons but may not be able to afford our full fees, is eligible to apply for a bursary.

Bursary applications are accepted throughout the year; the deadline to receive an application is six weeks before the class/lesson start date to which the bursary will be applied.

Visit placedesarts.ca/scholarships-and-bursaries to find our bursary guidelines and an application form.

All applicants will be notified of the status of their application within two weeks of the submission date. Awarded bursary amounts will be placed as a credit on the applicant’s Place des Arts account.

Financial Assistance for Recreation

In partnership with the City of Coquitlam’s Financial Assistance for Recreation (FAR)* and our local social service agencies, we provide full and partial subsidies to our arts education programs.

*to be eligible for FAR, please apply through the City of Coquitlam. For more information visit coquitlam.ca/499/Financial-Assistance-forRecreation

history are taught at the upper levels. This program provides a solid understanding of music and creates a strong foundation for children to study music at an older age. Teachers: Karen Illman and Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)

In the Red level (3 ½ - 4 ½ years), students begin by building a repertoire of musical experiences. The songs and rhymes learned will be used to inform musical concepts in later years. The goal is to have a fun, positive experience in music in a group setting. Concepts such as music beat, fast/slow, loud/soft and higher/lower pitches are explored.

The Yellow level (4 ½ - 5 ½ years) has more singing, more games, and more fun! They begin their first music reading and writing booklets. Hand signs are used to convey differences in pitch and rhythm names are spoken and written in stick notation. Pitch matching and melody charts are used to assist in singing in tune.

At the Green level (5 ½ - 6 ½ years) the music staff is introduced, and students learn to read and write notes upon the staff using both absolute pitch names and hand sign names. The students create three booklets using three different keys for reading and writing music. They also begin playing the recorder.

At the Blue level (6 ½ - 7 ½ years), students continue playing the recorder which will provide a wonderful foundation for learning other instruments in the future. The sharp and flat are introduced. Students learn to read and write music using three full major and minor scales.

At the Purple level (7 ½ - 8 ½ years), the students become skillful on the recorder, learning several classical pieces and longer folk and popular pieces by the end of the year. Singing is improved through vocal exercises and solo work. Music theory is expanded and students compose their own music. Part-work, music terms and hand signs are built upon at this final level of the Musical Rainbow!

Students will be grouped by Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) skill level and, upon completion of the class, will be able to perform all the technical and musicianship requirements for their exam.
