General Information

March 14 - 18: Kindergarten - Grade 5 Camp Class Descriptions

Grades 6 - 9 Intensives: March 14 - 18 & March 21 - 25

Kindergarten - Grade 5 Spring Break Camp Students from kindergarten to grade 2 and grades 3 to 5 choose one full-day block that runs Monday – Friday. Each block contains six classes of activities. Small class sizes ensure that students receive quality time with their teachers. Please refer to the timetable for the content of each block.

Clay Play

Origami Racetrack

Let’s Paint with Acrylics

Use your imagination and have fun creating unique clay projects. Individual exploration is encouraged as you discover cool techniques with clay. Projects will be finished with either paint or glaze to take home on Friday.

Vroom vroom, It’s time for origami racing! You will learn how to make race cars, roads, flags and more using paper-folding techniques. Let’s get zooming!

In this class, you’ll explore different ways of using acrylic paint to create artwork. Learn about composition, colour-mixing and contrast to paint your very own masterpiece on canvas to take home.

Students must bring a nut-free lunch and a snack each day.

Grades 6 - 9 Spring Break Intensives Four, week-long, half-day art intensives run over the two weeks of the SD43 Spring Break and are designed specifically for youth, allowing them to delve more fully into their chosen art form. Students taking both morning and afternoon intensives should bring a nut-free lunch and snack each day.

Registration Registration opens on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Registration may be done online starting at 7:00 am or at 1:00 pm in-person or by phone by calling 604-664-1636. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Full payment of program fees must be made at the time of registration.

Drawing and Collage Teacher: Olga Pirogova

Put your drawing skills to work and try some new art tricks. Learn about composition, proportion, mixing colours and contrast by cutting and arranging shapes and exploring textures to create a mixed-media collage.

Experiment with various papers, fabrics and beads, and use ink, paint, markers, crayons and pencils to incorporate printing and drawing techniques to create your masterpiece.

Withdrawal

Teacher: Jason Overy

A student may withdraw up to seven (7) days prior to the camp start date. A refund of the class fee will be granted less the nonrefundable registration fee. Refunds will not be granted after the seven (7) day period has passed. Exceptions for medical or compassionate reasons may be considered upon receipt of a written request submitted at least 24 hours prior to the start date of the class to info@placedesarts.ca. A medical certificate may be required.

Upon approval, a refund of the class fee will be granted, less the registration fee and any applicable supply fees.

Theatre Club Jr.

Teacher: Seamus Fera Join Place des Arts’ Theatre Club, a place where you can let your imagination run free! You will explore character development, physical theatre and how to use your voice by rehearsing a short play. Examples of scripts include Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Jungle Book. The week will culminate in a performance for friends and family. Whether you are an avid thespian or just want to dip your toe in the world of theatre, this collaborative club is for you!

Weaving Fun

Teacher: Stephanie Mah Join us to have fun with fibre arts and create beautiful, functional, one-of-a-kind treasures.

You’ll make a new piece every day! Spinning and dyeing, weaving and felting, gaining hands-on experience while developing colour sense and understanding how different fibres can be transformed.

This is an introduction to drums and percussion from around the world including North and South America, Africa, Cuba, the Middle East, Japan and Brazil. Come play some rhythms alongside recordings and synthesizers. Get your groove on and release your inner drummer!

Teacher: Sarah Park

Dance to the rhythm of the music and learn some moves from a variety of hip hop styles!

Classes will include many different movement and coordination games and fun activities. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and non-marking running shoes or bare feet.

You will learn a range of handbuilding techniques and gain skills and confidence on the wheel to design and build your own small-scale ceramic sculptures and usable cups or bowls. Use clay to explore form, surface and subject while allowing your imagination to take flight! Projects from this class will be fired and glazed. Fired projects will be ready for pick-up from Place des Arts approximately four weeks after the class end date.

Still Life Drawing

Teacher: Tami Murray Put your observation skills to practice by drawing in both dry and wet media with different still life set-ups each day. Closely study flowers, fruit, interesting objects and drapery and work on drawing techniques, composition and perspective.

Theatre Club Sr.

Teacher: Seamus Fera Actors to the stage! Learn to follow your impulses and improve your rehearsal and performance skills in this weeklong intensive. Work creatively and connect with your peers to devise your show while using props and professional masks. Perform it for your friends and family at the end of the week.

Intensives Supervision Policy Place des Arts does not provide supervision before or after class or during break times for students registered in our art intensive programs. Place des Arts does not assume responsibility for the well-being and safety of minors who are left unattended. If your child(ren) are registered for both the morning and afternoon intensive classes, they are welcome to eat their lunch at tables in the atrium or outside on Place des Arts property during the lunchtime break between classes (12:00-12:35 pm). Students must remain on Place des Arts property during lunch and within the designated boundaries, which will be identified on the first day of class by a Place des Arts staff member. Alternatively, parents are welcome to pick up their child(ren) and leave Place des Arts property during lunchtime.
