National Reconciliation Week: “Bridging Now to Next” STORY: PAGE 3
Paul McCallum joins National Simultaneous Storytime in Narromine By SHARON BONTHUYS Inland Petroleum principal and owner Paul McCallum knows a few things about trucks, and so he was the perfect guest to read a truckingrelated picture book to a group of the town’s youngest residents at Narromine Library last week. Proudly watched by wife Pam and other family members, the grandfather of four took to the floor with his eight-month-old grandson Archie on his knee to read “The Truck Cat”, the chosen text for this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime. The young audience enjoyed the picture book written by Deborah Frenkel and illustrated by Danny Snell, and answering the questions asked along the way. The event also included another story read by Narromine Libraries Coordinator Gabby Teale-McEvoy, followed by craft activities where the children made “Truck Cat” masks. Some children also took advantage of the big box of toy cars to test out the mini Truck Wash created by the library team.

Five new citizens now call our shire home By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN Passion for agriculture, new opportunities, and love, are all reasons why these new Aussies are now calling Australia home. Narromine Mayor Councillor Ewen Jones last Friday welcomed five new citizens in a naturalisation ceremony at Narromine Shire Council Chambers, with family, friends, and Council staff all in attendance. Jacques and Mariska Cloete moved to Australia, from South Africa six years ago following an employment opportunity 50km south of Narromine. “We moved to Peak Hill, and I got sponsored to work there… I work in agriculture and there was a job opportunity that came up,” Jacques explained. “Then in 2023, the kids started school here (Narromine), and so we decided to move here, I still work there, I just drive around,” he added. Mariska and Jacques have two children, Jacques Jr and Adrian, and, while Mariska was expecting Adrian, Jacques missed the memo and nearly missed his fl ight.

“I was heavily pregnant when we came over, and initially they didn’t want us to get on the fl ight,” Mariska said. “At that point, we had already sold all our stuff; we just sold our ute!” she added.
Mariska is a school teacher and gave birth to Adrian in Australia, while Jacques Jr was born in South Africa. Part of the reason for their move was that South Africa has been experiencing a long-
running energy crisis since the end of 2007, where residents experience nationwide power outages on an almost daily basis. Continued page 6
