THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE has tightened visa renewal rules by reducing the interview waiver period to 12 months. Now, only applicants whose previous visa expired within the past year may qualify for a waiver. Eligibility also requires applying in one’s home country, having no prior visa refusals (unless waived), and no apparent ineligibilities. Certain diplomatic and official visa holders remain exempt.
As of February 18, 2025, consular officers have the discretion to waive in-person interviews for certain applicants, such as those applying for diplomatic or official visas. However, for most visa holders, the eligibility period to renew a visa without an interview has been reduced from 48 months to 12 months.
This change means that individuals whose visas expired more than 12 months ago will now be required to attend an in-person interview when renewing their visas. This adjustment is a reversion to pre-pandemic policies, as the extended 48-month renewal window was a temporary measure implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce in-person interactions.
The reduction in the interview waiver period is expected to impact frequent travellers and professionals, potentially leading to longer wait times for visa renewals due to the increased demand for in-person interviews. Applicants are advised to plan accordingly and check the specific guidelines on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website in their region, as policies may vary.

Vietnam is considering a new visa policy aimed at increasing tourism from India and other countries. Le Quang Bien, Vietnam’s Consul General in Mumbai, highlighted the growing potential of Vietnamese tourism, which boasts beautiful beaches, rivers, and cultural landmarks like Buddhist pagodas. Currently, Vietnam offers e-visas but does not have a visa-on-arrival system for tourists from India and other nations. Bien confirmed that the government is evaluating a change in policy to make it easier for tourists, particularly from India, to visit. The diplomat stressed the
significance of India as a key market for Vietnam, given the large population and strong bilateral ties between the two countries. Indian tourists are already showing increasing interest in Vietnam, with more expected to visit in the future. In addition to the visa policy, efforts are being made to promote Da Nang, a coastal city in Vietnam known for its beaches, museums, and cultural heritage.
Huynh Thi Huong Lan, Deputy Director of Da Nang’s Tourism Promotion Centre, emphasised that India is a vital part of the city’s growth strategy. With India ranking among the top
five source markets for Da Nang’s tourism, the city is adapting its services to meet Indian travellers’ expectations, especially in the MICE and wedding tourism sectors.
In 2024, over 222,000 Indian visitors travelled to Da Nang, making up 5.3% of the city’s total international arrivals.
The number of Indian tourists visiting Da Nang has surged by more than 13.5 times since 2019, reflecting Vietnam’s rising appeal as a tourist destination. As the economic hub of Central Vietnam, Da Nang is gaining recognition as a leading destination for both leisure and business tourism.

The Cortado hails from Spain’s Basque region, where it takes its name from the Spanish verb ‘cortar’, meaning ‘to cut’. Cut it does—through the bitter intensity of espresso with just the right touch of milk. This bold yet perfectly sized drink is a harmonious blend of equal parts espresso and milk, usually served in a sleek 4-ounce cup. The milk is gently steamed, adding a hint of sweetness without overwhelming the espresso’s punch.
Forget foam mountains!
The Flat White was born somewhere in the 80s down under (Australia or New Zealand, still a delicious mystery!). Think of it as the espresso’s cool cousin, ditching the frothy drama for a smooth operator persona. A double shot of pure coffee magic meets microfoam, that velvety, steamed milk hug. Served in a cute 6-ounce cup, it’s the perfect blend of strong coffee kick and a touch of silky indulgence.
The macchiato, likely born in Italy in the 1980s, translates to ‘marked’ in Italian, which perfectly describes the drink: a shot of espresso marked with a small dollop of foamed milk. The macchiato is a bold, concentrated drink with a strong coffee flavour. It is typically small—around 2 ounces—ideal for those who prefer intense coffee with a subtle creamy finish.
TEQUILA TALES
The word ‘affogato’, which means to drown, reflects the key feature of the dessert: a scoop of vanilla ice cream or gelato ‘drowned’ by a shot of hot espresso. An affogato perfectly blends contrasting flavours: the deep, bitter acidity of espresso meets the smooth, creamy sweetness of vanilla ice cream, overwhelming the espresso’s punch.
A Mexican masterpiece, the Rosita cocktail embodies the country’s vibrant culture and love for tequila. This intriguing libation is a delightful blend of tequila, vermouth, and bitters, resulting in a complex and spirited drink. The Rosita cocktail traces its lineage to the cocktail renaissance of the 1950s, particularly in the realm of tequila. This cocktail personifies the spirit of the era, offering a blend of European influence and Mexican tradition.
This refined three-ingredient cocktail, created by bar expert Jacques Bezuidenhout, features a blend of lightly aged reposado tequila, manzanilla sherry, and pear liqueur. It is described as a wonderfully dry aperitif-style drink, highlighting its sophisticated and balanced flavour profile
This vibrant, rich, chocolatey creation from a Los Angeles bartender Karla FloresMercado blends blanco tequila with Caffe Lolita coffee liqueur, coffee concentrate, honey syrup, Zucca Rabarbero Amaro, and a touch of lemon oils. The rich earthiness and subtle saltiness of the tequila harmonise beautifully with the flavours of an Espresso Martini, bringing together notes of coffee and chocolate in a smooth, balanced drink.
IN 2024, the demand for a more personalised, sciencedriven approach to relaxation surged, giving rise to ‘silver bullet’ wellness retreats. Unlike traditional pampering, these retreats offer state-of-the-art diagnostics and science-backed treatments from world-class medical teams. Guests can undergo medical assessments, MRIs and intensive ‘monk level’ meditation with programs designed to address specific health concerns, slow ageing, and unlock the body’s potential for extended vitality and wellness.
The post-pandemic desire for well-being and longevity programs has seen a significant uptick. This growing sector caters to those seeking bespoke health programs ranging from detox retreats and life coaching to comprehensive body analysis and cognitive enhancement treatments.
Top destinations like Indonesia, India and the Nordic countries are leading the way by offering deep meditation practices to cutting-edge genetic testing. With options like cold-water immersion, sound baths, and biometric scans, travellers can select their silver bullet for optimal well-being.

Cherry Blossom Season in Japan March - May 2025
Cherry blossoms in Japan, or sakura, are a symbol of beauty and fleeting nature. Every spring, people gather for hanami (flower viewing) to admire the delicate pink blooms. This tradition, celebrated across the country, represents renewal, impermanence, and the harmonious connection between nature and human life. It typically occurs from late March to early May, depending on the region.
Q&
ABusiness Traveller India chats with the Managing Director of Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford about the future and growth of luxury hospitality
Can sustainability and ultra-luxury coexist in a way that enhances rather than compromises opulence, leading to the rise of regenerative hospitality?
Sustainability and ultra-luxury coexist and, when thoughtfully integrated, enhance the guest experience.
In today’s luxury hospitality, sustainability is a core principle, not just a buzzword. Initiatives like our urban Aquaponics Farm at Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel
The Stamford show how eco-friendly practices provide fresh, high-quality produce while supporting local sustainability goals. Recently, we also added vanilla cultivation to our farm, offering guests fresh, organic vanilla grown on-site instead of artificial extracts. The fusion of sustainability and luxury creates a richer, more meaningful experience, where innovation, respect for the environment, and celebration of local
culture redefine what it means to be truly luxurious.
How does your hotel chain address unique and personalised experiences among luxury travellers?
While technology and AI enhance efficiency, the essence of luxury hospitality lies in our people. Personalisation goes beyond data and automation—it’s about human connection, intuition, and anticipating needs before they’re expressed.
Today’s luxury travellers seek meaningful, tailored experiences, and our team, the Heartists, makes this possible. Whether crafting a custom itinerary, creating a signature cocktail, or adding thoughtful touches to a room, our people bring personalisation to life.
Fostering the next generation of talented, creative, and passionate hospitality professionals is a priority.
Ultimately, luxury is about how a guest feels during their stay. AI may refine processes, but it’s our people who create the magic.
How do you envision the future of luxury hospitality in Singapore and what trends do you foresee?
My vision centres on people remaining at the heart of the experience. As the industry embraces technological innovation and sustainability, true luxury will always be defined by personalised, exceptional service. It’s the attention to detail, intuitive service, and understanding of each guest’s unique needs that truly set luxury apart. In my view, around 80% of this comes down to who we like to call Heartists—a perfect blend of heart and artist. I want our team to take pride in this remarkable business of happiness, where every interaction is driven by genuine warmth and care. Luxury is about making special happen at every moment and ensuring our guests feel truly valued. Technology and sustainability advancements must enhance human connection rather than replace it.
What key shifts do you anticipate in the evolution of luxury hospitality over the next 10 years?
Over the next decade, luxury hospitality will continue to evolve with innovation, shift traveller expectations, and a stronger emphasis on personalisation and sustainability.
Several key shifts will shape the future of luxury hospitality: Luxury hotels will increasingly blend tradition with modernity. Advances in smart tech, AI-driven personalisation, and immersive experiences will transform guest service.
MICE offerings will include experiential elements and seek interactive experiences for networking and team-building. As more travellers blend work and leisure, hotels will need flexible packages combining business and leisure options.
Guests will prioritise hotels committed to sustainability and seek personalised experiences, with data-driven solutions curating bespoke stays. High-quality culinary experiences will emphasise exceptional ingredients, service, and value.
Luxury hotel bars will become attractions in their own right, appealing to both guests and locals. At Fairmont Singapore and Swissôtel The Stamford, we are dedicated to leading this transformation. What role do technology and AI play in reshaping the luxury hospitality sector to elevate the guest experience?
Technology and AI are revolutionising the hospitality industry, but at its core, our business remains deeply human. As Accor’s Employee Value Proposition states, “Hospitality is a Work of Heart.”
AI enhances guest experiences through personalised chatbots and virtual assistants, streamlines operations with inventory management, and tailors marketing to individual preferences. However, while we embrace these innovations for efficiency and enhanced experiences, they are meant to complement, not replace, authentic human connection.
In what ways do you think evolving guest expectations post-pandemic shaped the luxury hospitality industry’s strategies?
Guest expectations for luxury hospitality have evolved, with
PEOPLE: Respect and treat your people right first, and they will, in turn, treat your customers right.
PRODUCT: Ensure an unwavering focus on product quality.
PROFIT: This naturally follows when we excel at the first two.
travellers now seeking personalised experiences. Our team uses technology and guest data to anticipate preferences, tailoring everything from room settings to itineraries. Sustainability is a key priority, with guests choosing ecoconscious hotels. Fairmont Singapore has long championed sustainability, most notably with the launch of an industry-first urban Aquaponics farm in November 2019. This initiative meets the growing demand for fresh, local produce and supports Singapore’s goal to produce 30% of its nutritional needs locally by 2030.
Singapore is a city of the future. If your hotel had to invent one groundbreaking, guest-first innovation inspired by this metropolis, what would it be? As a hotel with a history of sustainability innovation, our vision is to push the boundaries by pioneering new technologies. Imagine floors that generate energy from every step, powering operations at zero net cost, and real-time water recycling systems that turn every drop into a resource. Envision biophilic designs with living building facades that generate renewable energy, purify the air, and self-maintain through AIdriven systems.
If you had to craft the ultimate ‘Fairmont Singapore Experience’— one that captures the soul of the hotel in 24 hours—what would it look like?
Begin with a stay in a luxurious Fairmont Gold room with stunning Marina Bay views from a private balcony. Enjoy a signature Fairmont ritual—laksa in bed, paired with coffee or tea. After taking in the skyline, embark on a private tour of the hotel’s urban aquaponics farm, showcasing its sustainability efforts. Next, indulge in an authentic Italian lunch at Prego, led by Chef Davide. At ANTI:DOTE, craft signature cocktails with expert mixologists, and don’t miss the Maple Smash, a modern classic. As the day ends, savour a sumptuous dinner at SKAI, a vibrant grill concept, or JAAN by Kirk Westaway, a two-Michelinstarred modern British restaurant, both offering breathtaking city views from the 70th floor.
n the past decade, travel has witnessed the rise of bleisure travel—a seamless blend of business and leisure. Today, professionals are extending their work trips or incorporating leisure activities into their schedules, transforming the experience of business travel.
Several factors contribute to the growing popularity of bleisure travel - The rise of remote and hybrid work models has given professionals more flexibility in planning their business trips. Workrelated travels are viewed as an opportunity to experience a new city, culture, and lifestyle.
Companies now recognise that a happy, well-rounded employee is a more productive one. Encouraging employees to extend their trips or to explore a destination leads to job satisfaction, creativity, and overall well-being.
Baku, a top bleisure destination, is known for its dynamic blend of history and innovation, catering to business professionals and curious travellers looking for memorable experiences. Baku regularly hosts international summits, investment forums, and the high-profile Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. With its modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art conference centres, and luxurious accommodations, the city provides a professional setting for business engagements.
Baku also offers an incredible cultural and leisure experience. Bleisure travellers can visit
the UNESCO-listed Old City (Icherisheher), wander through its ancient streets, and marvel at the iconic Maiden Tower. The city’s rich history comes alive in the myriad of unique museums hosted inside actual old mansions to the architectural marvel designed by the late Zaha Hadid.
After a day of meetings, travellers can enjoy local cuisine or take a short trip to Gobustan National Park to witness ancient petroglyphs and mud volcanoes. Baku is an exceptional bleisure destination.
At The Ritz-Carlton, we have recognised this shift and have tailored our offerings to meet the expectations of modern bleisure travellers. Personalisation is keyevery bleisure traveller has different needs—some may prefer cultural excursions, while others might seek wellness and rejuvenation.
We curate bespoke experiences, ensuring each guest enjoys a wellrounded stay.
The ease of access to information, boosted by social media, has made planning bleisure trips more rewarding. I reckon relatively unknown destinations would gain more popularity as future bleisure hotspots.
For hoteliers, the bleisure movement is a fundamental shift in how people travel for work. By embracing this change and curating experiences that cater to both professional and leisure needs, we are nurturing the ideal traveller segment, where they are not simply looking for a bed to sleep in but have a meaningful journey.
Bleisure travel is here to stay, and we are ready to welcome professionals who seek experiences, culture, and unforgettable moments.
For hoteliers, the bleisure movement is a fundamental shift
services to something far more nuanced and personal.
Today’s guests are not just looking for luxury accommodations, they seek meaningful connections that resonate with their personal values and lifestyle. I have conversed with countless travellers who tell me that what they remember most is not the thread count of our sheets, but rather the moment when our team went above and beyond to create something authentic and magical.
Personalisation is at the heart of everything we do. While technology help us remember that Mr Smith prefers extra pillows or that Ms
Hospitality’s transformation evolving with guest expectations
Chen enjoys a specific vintage of wine, it is our team’s genuine warmth that brings these details to life. I often remind my employees that while smart technology can make operations smoother, it can never replace the intuitive understanding and personal engagement from a sincere conversation with a guest. At The Singapore EDITION, we strive to create enchanting moments that guests remember long after checkout. At the start of the new year, we helped a guest plan his surprise proposal in our Lobby Bar. Being part of such meaningful milestones in our guests’ lives reaffirms why I chose this profession.
Sustainability is not just a word for us—it is woven into our everyday decisions. I take pride in the conscious choices we have made, from our energy-efficient systems to our responsibly sourced produce.

responsibility and exceptional guest experiences. The wellness revolution has transformed our offerings too. I have seen a significant shift in guest priorities, with many now selecting hotels based on holistic wellness programmes rather than just location or brand name. This has led us to partner with specialists who can deliver transformative experiences for guests specifically seeking these options.
Looking ahead, the challenge for luxury hoteliers lies in continuing this trajectory of innovation and maintaining authentic, human connections. As technology enables more personalisation, the risk of creating experiences feels algorithmic rather than genuinely thoughtful. Most forward-thinking luxury brands recognise investing in employee training that emphasises emotional intelligence alongside technical skills. I believe luxury hotels must continue evolving and never lose sight of hospitality’s core purpose. Technology will advance, and trends will come and go, but the feeling of being truly understood and cared for will never go out of style. As I walk through the property each morning, greeting employees and guests, I remain excited about being a part of this dynamic industry. Luxury hotels will continue to serve as the industry’s north star, not just for their aesthetics and service excellence but for the commitment to continually evolve. The future of luxury is constantly being rewritten, and I’m committed to ensuring our hotel is not just keeping pace—we are setting the benchmark for what luxury truly means in the modern world.

The way we travel has and is evolving beyond merely going from one point to another, becoming a journey imbued with cultural awareness, experiences and a new level of social consciousness. From the initial golden age of travel to current budget airlines and the restrictions of the pandemic, air travel has transformed over the past decade. Significant advancements in aviation have occurred over the years as engines and aircraft have become lighter, quieter, and more efficient. Emerging technologies reshaped with robotics, artificial intelligence, the internet of things, unmanned aircraft systems and the push for hybrid and electric airplanes sounded the death knell for jumbo jets across the world. Asia Pacific became the world’s biggest aviation market, whilst airlines squeezed more seats into their aircraft. Passengers benefited as fares remained at surprisingly affordable lows, business class seats hit new levels of comfort, wifi became airborne and inflight entertainment offered a plethora of options.
Offsetting this was the rise of annoying ancillary fees for previously included items, the decline of economy-class catering and the reduction of legroom to knee-crunching levels. Allegiances became extra fluid as airlines moved beyond major global alliances to make strategic deals, whilst some names faded away.
And now to tell the story of some airlines that have left an indelible mark over this decade with their actions and vision for the future:
Thoughtful, progressive, and can-do: is what the new Cathay Pacific global brand concept is about. Operating more than 150 aircraft and flying to over 170 destinations worldwide, Cathay Pacific has 200 more aircraft and a three-runway system at Hong Kong International Airport in the pipeline to enhance their operations. Over the past decade the Aria suite that they introduced, and their brainchild ‘Gallery in the Skies’ escalated customer service to an all-new high.
Their culinary program balances tradition with innovation; a taste of Hong Kong through classical favourite dishes, and partnerships with Michelin-starred establishments such as Louise and Dudell’s, whilst also focusing on a range of wellness and sustainability-focused food and experiences. The Corporate Sustainable Aviation Fuel Programme (SAF) combined with the ‘Fly Greener’ offset program and ‘Greener Together’ rewards program, positions Cathay Pacific at the forefront of aviation’s sustainable future.
From creating the concept of the Premium cabin to the introduction of onboard bars, pioneering the world’s flight seatback TVs, and even setting up charity donations with loose foreign currency, Virgin Atlantic has been innovating for customers since its inception. More recently, Virgin Atlantic has underpinned its belief that ‘everyone can take on the world’ with industry-leading changes for its team, who, along with its customers, are encouraged to live by the ‘Be Yourself’ mantra. In hindsight, it was the first airline to scrap make-up requirements for its cabin crew, allow visible tattoos and let its people decide which version of the iconic Vivienne Westwood uniform best represents them.
The airline has taken a leadership position in decarbonising aviation for more than a decade, taking early action to optimise the efficiency of its fleet and is committed to achieving net zero by 2050. It operated the historic Flight100, the first transatlantic flight on 100 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel last November 2024. The flight marked the culmination of a year of radical collaboration with a consortium of partners to demonstrate the capability of SAF as a safe drop-in replacement for fossil-derived jet fuel, compatible with today’s engines, airframes, and fuel infrastructure. The airline remains on course to reach sustainable profitability in the upcoming years. From 2025, it is set to offer over a million seats to India for the first time. In the endeavour to make travel sustainable, they have transformed their fleet to be younger, leaner and more fuel efficient.
British Airways is one of the most loved and recognisable brands in the sky. From its heritage as Imperial Airways in the early twentieth century to the retirement of the Boeing 747, it’s impartial to say the airline has seen more than its fair share of ups and downs. British Airways operates a mainline fleet of 253 aircraft, with an additional 42 aircraft on order. Its rich history, characterised by mergers, innovations, challenges, and strategic adaptations serve as a testament to the resilience and evolution of one of the world’s renowned airlines with its extensive fleet modernisation and strategic route adjustments with operations across six continents.
British Airways focuses on modern and fuel-efficient aircraft, demonstrating its commitment to reducing carbon emissions, decreasing resource use and waste, and fighting illegal wildlife trafficking while providing a high level of service. Also, creating opportunities in the communities where the airline operates whilst harnessing unique skills to support those affected by crisis. British Airways is also striving to make customer experiences more accessible and inclusive while maintaining the highest standard of corporate governance. The introduction of more fuelefficient aircraft, such as the A320neo, A350-1000, and 787 Dreamliners, play a significant role in this initiative. Additionally, British Airways focuses on retrofitting older aircraft with modern interiors and more sustainable materials, aiming to enhance passenger comfort while minimising environmental impact. Through a careful blend of modernisation, sustainability, and customer-focused enhancements, British Airways is poised to remain ahead in the game.
Known to be one of the industry’s most lucrative operators flying to over 260 cities across five continents, Singapore Airlines has also been synonymous with multiple awards over the past decade.
The SIA Group includes Singapore Airlines, Scoot their low-cost airline, as well as Singapore Airlines Cargo.
SIA was the first to present a series of amenities for their passengers from a choice of meals, free headphones, free alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, hot towels with a unique scent, to personal entertainment systems and video on demand in all cabins, all things that are now a norm. In recent years, they have additionally differentiated the brand experience through various in-flight perks. One of them is their program ‘Book the Cook’, in which passengers can handpick their favourite gourmet main course from a selection of dishes prepared by Singapore Airlines’ International Culinary Panel. With the limelight on their food and beverage stratosphere, SIA collaborated with Michelin-starred chefs and restaurants to offer various gastronomic dining experiences in the sky alongside taking care to ensure that its certified Air Sommeliers are available in-flight
to advise passengers on the art of food and wine pairing. Some of the key customer experience strategies used by Singapore Airlines to deliver the best in-flight experience include searching for familiar flavours to help make their passengers feel at home. Their menu includes green tea from Japan, jasmine tea from Fujian, and masala tea from Assam, reflecting the culinary influences of the various regions they fly to. The company keeps driving innovation as a significant part of the brand. The cabin ambience and combined experience are key factors of its success. Their attention to detail is also reflected in the way its SilverKris Lounges are designed for ultimate comfort – spacious living rooms and private corners for relaxation and productivity pods available for passengers to work in. In 2017, Singapore Airlines launched a first-in- the-world product, their Suites cabin class, which assured a ‘personal oasis’ within a private space, exclusively on board the A380s.
With sustainability as part of their vision and core for the future, they are invested in new generation fuelefficient aircraft and optimise operations by reducing fuel consumption and emissions by adopting alternative lower carbon fuels and innovative technologies, and the usage of verified high-quality carbon offsets to address residual emissions that cannot be reduced further.
What began as a modest start-up in 1985 has evolved into a multibillion-dollar enterprise with more than 250 aircraft in its fleet. Its journey from its inception to its current status as a global aviation powerhouse is a testament to visionary leadership, strategic innovation, and unwavering commitment to excellence. From its humble beginnings with a small fleet and limited routes, Emirates has grown into one of the world’s largest and most respected airlines, renowned for its luxurious services, extensive global network, and pioneering spirit. The Emirates crew members represent over 170 nationalities, serving 151 destinations across 80 countries and has the largest aircraft fleet in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In the past decade, Emirates has strengthened its global footprint through strategic partnerships like the alliance with Qantas and major aircraft investments. Its plans to relocate to the state-of-theart Dubai World Central Airport by 2034, its multiple Skytrax awards, the introduction of groundbreaking in-flight amenities, great food and beverage options and significant infrastructure developments signal its continued commitment to growth and innovation, reinforcing its position as a trailblazer in the aviation industry

It is this intangible yet undeniable inheritance that defines the enduring legacy of watchmaking. The artistry of a meticulously handcrafted timepiece is in its precision and the passion poured into every gear, every dial, and every escapement. Behind each legendary brand lies the dedication of master watchmakers who spent centuries refining and immortalising their craft.
A fine watch is a testament to history, a silent custodian of the milestones in our lives. It carries forth the stories of those who wore it before us and promises to accompany future generations in their journeys.
The true essence of horology is found in deeply personal relationships, whether passed down through generations or acquired as a symbol of a milestone, a fine timepiece is a bridge between the past, present, and future.
ew to none in the history of horology command the same reverence as Breguet.
FMore than a watchmaker, Abraham-Louis Breguet was a true visionary who redefined precision timekeeping. The Maison exemplifies ingenuity, technical mastery, and timeless elegance, earning the admiration of royalty, scholars, fellow innovators and discerning collectors. The groundbreaking innovations revolutionised watchmaking and continue to shape the industry today.
Among his most celebrated inventions is the tourbillon, patented in 1801. Designed to counteract the effects of gravity on a watch’s movement, the tourbillon remains one of the most revered and technically challenging complications in contemporary watchmaking.
Another pioneering breakthrough was the Breguet overcoil, a specialised hairspring that enhances timekeeping accuracy by ensuring a more concentric oscillation of the balance wheel and is still widely used by esteemed watch manufacturers.
Breguet also introduced the pare-chute shock absorption system, a revolutionary advancement that protected delicate watch components from impact damage. This innovation laid the foundation for modern shock-resistant mechanisms, a feature integral to high-performance timepieces today.
Beyond his technical genius, Breguet transformed the visual language of watchmaking. He pioneered engine-turned dials, which enhanced both legibility and refinement and introduced the iconic Breguet hands distinguished by their elegant, hollowed-out tips. His signature numerals – called Breguet Numerals, with their graceful, flowing script, became a hallmark of understated sophistication, influencing watch aesthetics for centuries to come.
One of Breguet’s iconic creations is the Marie-Antoinette No. 160, a masterpiece of unparalleled craftsmanship and intrigue. This extraordinary watch, featuring a perpetual calendar, minute repeater, thermometer, and self-winding mechanism, took decades to complete. Tragically, MarieAntoinette never laid eyes on it, nor did Breguet himself live to see its completion four years after his passing. Adding to its mystique, it was stolen from a museum in 1983, only to resurface in 2007, reigniting fascination with its remarkable history. Today, Montres Breguet honours its founder’s legacy by crafting timepieces that seamlessly blend tradition with innovation. Each watch serves as a tribute to the genius of Breguet, proving that true horological mastery transcends time itself.
In the realm of haute horology, Patek Philippe is renowned by many as the epitome of craftsmanship, innovation, and prestige. Patek Philippe is a guardian of horological tradition, meticulously crafting mechanical marvels that transcend time.
Established in 1839 in Geneva by Antoni Patek and Jean Adrien Philippe, the brand revolutionised the industry with pioneering advancements, including the groundbreaking keyless winding system, that remains a fundamental component of modern watchmaking. Patek Philippe’s legacy is punctuated by momentous milestones, from unveiling the world’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925 to engineering the legendary Henry Graves Super-complication in 1933, a timepiece that remains one of the most intricate pocket watches ever created.
The brand’s technical ingenuity extends beyond mechanical feats; it is a symphony of precision and artistic mastery. From split-second chronographs to minute repeaters and celestial complications, each innovation reflects an unwavering commitment to excellence. Every Patek Philippe timepiece is a testament to over 180 years of relentless pursuit of perfection.
Technical prowess alone does not define a ‘Patek’—it is the embodiment of Swiss watchmaking savoir-faire. Master artisans dedicate years to perfecting their craft, from intricate enamelling on dials to the delicate acoustic refinement of minute repeaters. The Sky Moon Tourbillon, an exceptional horological creation, is so intricate that only a handful of elite watchmakers are capable of assembling it, ensuring that every detail—from the celestial chart to the hand-engraved case—reflects the pinnacle of artistic mastery.
Patek Philippe’s timepieces are designed to endure, becoming treasured heirlooms passed down through generations, carrying with them stories of heritage and grandeur. Worn by royalty, visionaries, and cultural luminaries—including Queen Victoria, Albert Einstein, Paul McCartney, and contemporary business magnates—Patek Philippe watches signify more than affluence; they represent discernment, refinement, and intellectual legacy.
In a world driven by transient trends and fleeting technology, Patek Philippe remains a beacon of enduring elegance. More than a mere instrument for measuring time, the timepieces reaffirm that true luxury can never be found in a place where hurriedness or impetuosity is, but in a place where there is a relentless pursuit of perfection!
The world’s oldest continuously operating watchmaker, Vacheron Constantin has spent nearly 270 years crafting timepieces and a legacy of mechanical marvels.
In 1755 Jean-Marc Vacheron, a young Geneva-based watchmaker, established an atelier that became renowned for its precision and refinement. When François Constantin joined 64 years later, he brought a global vision and introduced Maison’s guiding principle: “Do better if possible, and that is always possible”, which remains the cornerstone of the house’s philosophy. Throughout its illustrious history, the Maison has been at the forefront of horological innovation. In 1839, the introduction of the pantograph revolutionised precision craftsmanship. They continued to break boundaries, creating one of the world’s thinnest pocket watches in 1907 and unveiling the opulent Kallista in 1979—a masterpiece crafted from solid gold and encrusted with diamonds. In 1931, they introduced an innovative pocket watch featuring just numbers and two hands. When viewed from the side, it measured a remarkable 3.65mm, showcasing their exceptional craftsmanship. The handmade movement was just 0.94mm thick. The pinnacle of its technical mastery arrived in 2015 with Reference 57260, the most complex watch ever made, featuring an astonishing 57 complications, developed over eight years by three master watchmakers.
The Métiers d’Art collection showcases centuries-old techniques such as cloisonné enamelling and guilloché engraving. These intricate ‘form’ methods transform each timepiece into a miniature work of storytelling art, blending engineering brilliance with aesthetic mastery. Worn by iconic luminaries such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Harry Truman, and Elizabeth Taylor, every Vacheron Constantin timepiece carries a unique narrative. In an era dictated by fleeting trends, Vacheron Constantin remains a bastion of enduring innovations, a custodian of horological artistry, safeguarding the traditions of true craftsmanship.

redefined the very essence of a timepiece—
Cartier’s journey into horology began in 1904 when Louis Cartier forever altered timekeeping with the creation of the Santos. Designed for Brazilian aviator Alberto SantosDumont, it was considered the first modern wristwatch, replacing gorgeous, incroyable but sadly cumbersome pocket watches with a sleek, practical alternative. This
groundbreaking design revolutionised the industry, ushering in a new era of elegance and functionality.
The Maison’s pioneering ethos continued with the launch of the Tank in 1917, inspired by the powerful geometric lines, the Tank personified an avant-garde
silhouette of World War I military tanks. With its clean, sophistication and became a timeless icon, gracing the wrists of cultural luminaries such as Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol, and Princess Diana. Cartier’s mastery extends

its deep-rooted connection with Indian royalty. In the early 20th century, Indian Maharajas renowned for their hedonistic extravagance and affinity for grandeur became some of Cartier’s most esteemed patrons. While Cartier’s reputation as a jeweller soared, the brand also designed bespoke wristwatches for Indian royalty, harmonising Eastern opulence with the sleek refinement of Art Deco. This regal connection inspired creations like the Tutti Fruity Collection - infused with artistry, exotic materials, and intricate motifs that continue to echo in contemporary Cartier timepieces. While embracing cutting-edge horology with innovations such as the Astrotourbillon the brand remains steadfast in its commitment to refined elegance.

IWC Schaffhausen harmonises technical mastery and timeless aesthetics. Since 1868, IWC is not merely a watch manufacturer but a testament to the fusion of precision engineering and pioneering innovation. From crafting rugged military pilot watches to developing sophisticated complications, IWC has cultivated a legacy defined by adventure, ingenuity, and excellence.
American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones ventured to Switzerland with a bold vision to merge Swiss horological craftsmanship with advanced American engineering techniques. Founding the International Watch Company (IWC) in Schaffhausen, Jones set the groundwork for one of the most revered names in fine watchmaking. Unlike many Swiss brands that emphasised ornate aesthetics, IWC distinguished itself with functional, robust designs tailored for aviators, divers, engineers, and military officers. This dedication to precision engineering led to the creation of some of the most iconic collections in watchmaking history, including the Pilot’s Watch, Portugieser, and Ingenieur. Each of these collections was conceived to endure extreme conditions while maintaining an air of refined sophistication.
One of IWC’s most remarkable contributions to military horology dates back to World War II when the British Ministry of Defence commissioned timepieces for its soldiers. Only 12 watchmakers were entrusted with this task, and IWC was among the elite few. These watches, later known as the ‘Dirty Dozen,’ were designed for absolute reliability, featuring a highly legible black dial, luminous markers, and a shockresistant movement to withstand the rigours of combat.
Rumours persist that a select number of these military watches were lost or hidden following the war, only to reappear decades later in unexpected places and remain among the most coveted vintage military watches.
IWC further solidified its reputation with the introduction of the Pilot’s Watch in 1936 featuring an anti-magnetic movement and an easily readable dial. Likewise, the Portugieser collection, originally commissioned by Portuguese merchants in the 1930s, endures as an icon of understated luxury and refined watchmaking.
While IWC continues to embrace innovation with advancements such as Ceratanium cases and perpetual calendars, it remains steadfast in preserving the essence of Swiss craftsmanship. Portugieser Eternal Calendar represents a groundbreaking achievement in modern watchmaking, showcasing IWC’s commitment to precision and innovation. The secular perpetual calendar is designed to remain accurate without adjustment until the year 3999 accounting for the rare leap year exceptions in the Gregorian calendar. Additionally, its moon phase complication deviates by only one day every 45 million years, reflecting an extraordinary level of accuracy!
EEstablished in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the brand has transformed from a humble workshop into one of the most pioneering watchmakers in history. Renowned for setting precision records and pushing the boundaries of exploration—whether in space, the deep sea, or competitive sports—Omega has consistently redefined timekeeping excellence.
A defining moment in Omega’s history came in 1894 with the introduction of the 19-ligne ‘Omega’ calibre. This revolutionary movement streamlined production, enhanced accuracy, and simplified servicing. It was such a game-changing innovation that the company adopted the name Omega, symbolising the pinnacle of watchmaking achievement. Throughout the 20th century, Omega solidified its reputation for precision, dominating observatory trials and setting remarkable accuracy records. The brand’s triumphs in 1931 and 1936 reinforced its status as a leader in chronometric excellence.
Beyond aesthetics, Omega has introduced groundbreaking advancements that have shaped the watch industry: First Minute-Repeating Wristwatch (1892): A pioneering complication that set new standards. Marine Chronometer Certification (1974): Establishing new quartz precision benchmarks. Co-Axial Escapement (1999): A revolutionary mechanism that minimises friction, enhancing longevity and accuracy. Master Chronometer Certification (2015): Setting the highest standards for magnetic resistance and precision.
One of the most enigmatic chapters in Omega’s history involves a lost prototype from the 1950s. This ultra-precise timepiece, designed to surpass all known accuracy records, mysteriously vanished while en route to a prestigious competition. Theories surrounding its disappearance range from industrial espionage to a simple logistical error, yet the watch was never recovered—only adding to Omega’s intrigue and mystique.
Beyond technical mastery, Omega has left an indelible mark on modern culture. They made watches for astronauts and on space programs, timers for the Olympics and other sporting events, watches for RAF pilots and soldiers in WWI & WWII; watches that can keep time in unbelievable temperatures for scientific and Polar expeditions, and watches that can withstand the depths of the ocean and anti-magnetic and industrial applications. These timepieces are not just instruments, they are symbols of human achievement and adventure.
A distinctive sensory experience that can’t be replicated during the day
You know that feeling when you want to experience the city’s nightlife but you’re just too exhausted from a full day of sightseeing? Night Owls, assemble.
While the early birds are tucked in, the real magic begins—markets glow, museums whisper, jungles come alive, and the stars finally get their moment to shine. From kayaking through glowing waters to locking eyes with a captious mummy, noctourism proves that the world is just getting started when the sun clocks out. It’s time to swap your pyjamas for cargos now!
What happens when artisans work under the stars or in the eerie quiet of the night? Think moonlit pottery sessions in Mexico, night markets selling handcrafted jewellery, or blacksmithing by torchlight in Eastern Europe. Night markets, additionally referred to as night bazaars, are street fairs that operate at night and are usually intended for more leisurely wandering, shopping, and dining than formally structured day sales.
Mexican and Nigerian night markets are vibrant celebrations of culture and community. In Mexico, food is an art—tamales and tacos come alive through the communal cooking tradition, blending regional flavours and deeprooted heritage. The warmth of shared labour fills the air, connecting families and creating a feast for the senses.
In Nigeria, markets like Balogun in Lagos embody the heartbeat of the city, where commerce meets culture in a dynamic exchange. These bustling markets are full of energy, with fresh produce, handmade crafts, textiles, and more being sold in a fast-paced, yet communal atmosphere. They’re not just places for shopping; they’re places where people connect, trade stories, and share experiences.
While the early birds are tucked in, the real magic begins—markets glow, museums whisper, jungles come alive, and the stars nally get their moment to shine
The mysteriously eerie side for wildlife enthusiasts, including nocturnal hunters, scavengers, and other creatures of the dark. Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh and Jawai in Rajasthan are two such good examples. A night safari is usually an excursion to a menagerie or a wildlife viewing facility at twilight. The name was first used by the Night Safari in Singapore, which debuted in 1994.
While the phrase typically refers to zoos or institutions that allow tourists to observe animals within enclosures or fenced areas, it is increasingly being used to describe wildlife viewing in natural places, such as Laos.
Tips for an unforgettable night safari
Right location – Opt for reserves with regulated options to ensure ethical wildlife experiences.
Stay silent & be patient – Many nocturnal creatures are sensitive to sound. Silence increases your chances of rare sightings.
Gear – Night-vision binoculars, infrared cameras, and dim flashlights help enhance the experience without disturbing wildlife. Don’t use any perfumes as the scent may deter animals, especially big cats
Guidance – Trained naturalists and forest guides ensure safety while sharing insights (and fun facts) into the jungle’s hidden world.
IN THE STILLNESS OF THE EVENING, ART CAN BREATHE DIFFERENTLY.
Remember the episode from Friends where Ross & Rachel sleep in the museum? The couple initially plans to go to dinner, but later Ross gets called to the museum and has to work late and instead of disappointing Rachel, they have a picnic under the stars in the Planetarium. One of the most beautiful dates from the show for sure. The museum automatically transforms—its halls filled with whispers of forgotten stories (not just the cackling of tourists). Soft light caresses the bodies of sculptures, and paintings and polished marble enounces louder. A peaceful pilgrimage, worshipping time—where art is not just observed but absorbed. The Egyptian Museum: dark haunt! By day, it’s a museum—by night, it’s a time machine (portal to the past). Wander dim halls where mummies stare back, golden pharaohs glisten, and hieroglyphs whisper tales. King Tutankhamun’s burial mask? Still judging after 3,000 years.

Jerez de la Frontera embodies the Andalusian culture with sherrymaking, soulful flamenco roots, and a prestigious equestrian legacy
Tucked in the heart of Andalusia, Jerez de la Frontera may be overshadowed by its larger neighbours, but every nook and cranny of its old quarter echoes an affluent past, anchored by the towering 11th-century Alcázar de Jerez. But it’s not just the architecture that tells the tale of Jerez.
A distinctly Andalusian rhythm beats in perfect time with the flamenco guitars and stomping heels, the thunderous strides of Andalusian horses, and the unmistakable aroma of sherry—accentuating Jerez’s role as the epicentre of the Sherry Triangle.
A perfect reflection of Jerez itself is the Bodegas Marqués del Real Tesoro where over 25,000 oak barrels hold thousands of litres of sherry.
As the ponderous doors part with a creak, they instantly envelop you in an olfactory confluence—a mélange of timeworn wood and the palpable, reverent weight of history itself. That weight is deeply rooted in Real Tesoro’s noble lineage, established by Don Joaquin Manuel de Villena, whose grandfather earned the title of first Marquis of the Royal Treasury from King Carlos III for safeguarding royal

A legacy of winemaking

treasure ships from pirate raids.
This legacy of prestige was further cemented in 1897 when the bodega acquired centuries-old soleras from the Duke of Villacreces, a custodian of some of the region’s most esteemed sherry reserves. The vineyards of Jerez de la Frontera served as a Roman trading hub before falling under Visigothic and later Moorish rule. The modern word ‘Jerez’ evolved from Arabic origins, deriving from “sharish.” Until fairly recent times, this Spanish city was known in written form as ‘Xeres,’ reflecting the historical linguistic transformation

“This winery,” said my guide, Carmen García, with a proud smile, “is considered one of the 100 best wineries in the world. A story that began in the late 19th century.” Her voice reverberated off the old stones, her words resonated with the same richness as the wines resting in the cool, shadowed barrels around us.
“The Real Tesoro and Valdespina were originally located in the city centre. In 1980, Mr. José Estevez, the owner, bought this property, built these premises, and transferred the wineries here,” García explains, gesturing to the towering walls. La Guita, however, is set some 30 kilometres apart in the coastal town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the sea’s salty breezes infuse the wines with their unique character.

Inside the bodega, I am surrounded by antiquities—17th and 18th-century desks and clocks. Upstairs, García tells me, are the offices, but down here, we stand in the heart of the winery. I follow García deeper into the corridors, entering the sacristy, endearingly called the wine cathedrals. “These barrels,” García points, “hold wines that are more than 20 to 30 years old. The ones with 20-year-old wine are labelled ‘V.O.S.’—Very Old Sherry. Those with 30-year-old wine are marked as ‘V.O.R.S.’—Very Old Rare Sherry.” Each barrel is hand-crafted from American oak with a capacity of 600 litres of wine and a lifespan of over a century.
“Notice the royal insignia?” she asks, pausing to point. “We are a supplier for the Spanish royal family and other European royal houses too. Nearly 60 per cent of the production is exported to over 60 countries across five

continents. When important people visit, they sign the barrels.” The floor beneath our feet is made of American oak and coated in yellow soil from a bullring. “The barrels are painted black to better detect wine leaks,” García says, revealing, “These Sherry wines include Fino, Oloroso, Amontillado, Moscatel, and Pedro Ximénez.”
“What makes sherry so different from other wines?” I ask, and Carmen’s eyes light up. “It’s the biological and oxidative ageing system,” she replies, gesturing toward the native yeast of Jerez, present in the vineyard’s soil and on the grape skins. “For instance, Oloroso and Amontillado undergo oxidative ageing, where they are constantly in contact with air, which darkens and deepens their flavour. Wines like Pedro Ximenez and Moscatel are sweet because of the grapes themselves, the former from Cordoba and the latter from Malaga.”
The entire spectrum of sherry
wines springs from just three grape varieties. The palomino grape dominates production, responsible for about 90 per cent of all sherries, particularly the drier styles. For the sweet end of the spectrum, the bodega turns to moschatel and Pedro Ximenez grapes. The harvest takes place in early September when the grapes are picked and pressed. The juice is transferred to stainless steel vessels where it undergoes initial fermentation. To boost the alcohol level, the final step involves adding destilado, a grape-based spirit. The sherry, however, draws its distinctive character through its signature white, mineral-rich albariza soil that blankets the region and is formed from ancient seabeds rich in limestone and fossilized marine life, holding precious moisture even during the intense summer heat.
We, then walk through the cellar, where hundreds of barrels are stacked in rows—this is the Solera

system. “The lower barrels,” Carmen says, pointing to the closest ones to the ground, “hold the oldest wines.
As the wine ages, it’s gradually transferred upwards. Each year, about 100 litres are drawn from the Solera for bottling, and the system is refilled from the younger Criaderas above. The new wine at the top is constantly
mixed with the older ones below, ensuring consistency.” The oldest wines are to be sold, to be consumed.
The age of the wine inside each barrel varies by type. Pointing to three different barrels, García explains, “This wine, for instance, is around four to five years old, while the Amontillado is 17 years old and the
Oloroso is 15 years old. Each variety ages differently.” The evolution of the wine influences its colour and flavour profile, she adds. “From the Palomino Fino grape, we produce dry wines such as Fino, Manzanilla, Oloroso, and Amontillado. Meanwhile, from the Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez grapes, we craft sweet wines like Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez.”
Shortly, we emerge into the light of the Andalusian patio once again, where García asks, “Do you like horses?” Before I can answer, she leads me to a display of vintage carriages—landau, phaetons, and grand breaks. “This one,” she gestures to an impressive landau, “is drawn by one or two horses.” The grand breaks, however, are a 50-year-old copy and not the original. This type of carriage was drawn by between four to 12 horses. The final two carriages are Phaetons: an English and an Andalusian variant. Each was drawn by three to five horses, with the latter carriage requiring four to six. Both date back to the early 20th century, from 1930 and 1937.
We then toured the on-site stables to meet with the thoroughly bred
Principe, Contrabandista, Tio Dieco, and eight other Andalusian horses, each named after a sherry. However, to truly appreciate Jerez’s equestrian heritage, one should explore its world-class horse exhibitions, featuring traditional vaquero horsemanship. At the heart of this tradition stands the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, where riders and horses perform gracefully choreographed routines set to music.
Next, we move on to the private art gallery, where the highlight is Picasso’s Suite Vollard collection, a tribute to Amara Vollard, his renowned art dealer. Picasso created 100 Vollard etchings between 1930 and 1937, which are divided into four series: The Sculpture Study, Rembrandt, The Minotaur, and The Battle of Love. These capture significant moments in Picasso’s life during this time, including his separation from his first wife, the Russian Olga Khokhlova. García shares, “He began a new relationship with the young Maria Thérèse Walter, and this period also marked the onset of the Spanish Civil War. All of these experiences are reflected in these illustrations. This collection was acquired in 2002 for the opening

of the wine cellar, featuring original works.” The bodega’s art collection also features works by Dali and Miro, alongside Fernando Botero’s distinctive explorations of voluminous forms. However, the true highlight is a commissioned series by local talent Carlos Ayala, whose paintings capture the winemaking through historical scenes, thoughtfully portraying how men’s and women’s roles intertwined in traditional sherry production.
The tour culminated in a tasting session held in the Grand Piano Room, where I discovered how sherry’s colour reveals its maturity—from the golden tints of Manzanilla and Fino
Tío Mateo to the mahogany depths of Oloroso, Cream, and Pedro Ximénez. While their Amontillado del Principe also enjoys considerable renown, I found myself particularly drawn to the Oloroso’s complex nutty character during the five-wine tasting. It’s not surprising that Real Tesoro’s wines travel to sixty different lands including India, speaking the universal language of passion and history. And here, on the very soil where that journey begins, I stood witness to an age-old story of wine, told through the wisdom of the sherry itself. This comprehensive twohour bodega tour can be experienced for €12.5 (US$ 13.02) per person.

Celebrating Business Traveller India’s illustrious decade, Khursheed Mistry takes a look back at the CSMIA’s T2 feature from April 2015, which set the benchmark for elevated travel
hen GVK, an Indian conglomerate, began the ambitious reconstruction of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in 2009, none of us could have predicted the sheer magnificence that would ultimately take shape. It wasn’t until the grand opening of Terminal 2 (CSMIA T2) in February 2014 that the airport’s remarkable transformation captured global attention, elevating the travel experience to and from Mumbai to unprecedented heights.

The design of the terminal drew heavily from India’s rich cultural heritage, with a standout feature being the 3.2 km long art wall, ‘Jaya He.’ This striking installation brought ancient Indian art and history to the forefront. Less than a year after its opening, Terminal 2 had earned a slew of accolades, with ‘Jaya He’ playing a central role in Mumbai’s recognition as the ‘3rd Best Smart City’ in September 2014. The same year, GVK CSMIA was honoured with the ‘Outstanding Contribution in Airports – Infrastructure’ award. Further recognition came in October 2014, when the airport won a prestigious award for Sustainability, presented at the House of Lords in London. Architecturally, the terminal features an aweinspiring cable-stayed glass canopy, the world’s longest at 15 metres, which floods the space with natural light. The terminal also boasts 28 major skylights, each made from 272 glass panels measuring 55 sqm—making them the largest in Asia. Another 244 minor skylights cover approximately 140 sqm each. Beyond security, passengers found themselves in a sprawling 21,000 sqm area featuring luxury brands, local duty-free shops, restaurants, cafés, and even spas for a relaxing experience. The business and firstclass lounges offered a range of amenities, including spa treatments, showers, sleeping pods, high-speed internet, workstations, a well-stocked bar, and a library.
For the first year after its launch, T2 exclusively handled international flights. However, on January 9, 2015, Air Vistara became the first domestic airline to operate out of the terminal, marking a new chapter in its development.
By 2024, CSMIA saw an impressive surge in passenger traffic, handling approximately 54.8 million travellers. Terminal 2 continued to accommodate both domestic and international flights, while Terminal 1 (T1) underwent redevelopment to expand capacity.
In 2025, plans were announced to demolish and rebuild Terminal 1, with flights shifting to Navi Mumbai International Airport and CSMIA T2. Despite the ongoing changes, CSMIA remains one of the most visually striking airports in India, setting new benchmarks for the aviation industry and providing travellers with a world-class experience.
