PAMA & ‘THE QUAKES” PAMA & ‘THE QUAKES” PAMA & ‘THE QUAKES”
It was April 26, 2014, a cool, crisp night at Buck Shaw Stadium at the University of Santa Clara, California's oldest operating institution of higher learning (est. 1851). This has been the home for the San Jose Earthquakes since 2008. It was a home game vs Chivas USA, and something new was happening, history…
The very first Portuguese play-by-play in its entirety was being broadcast worldwide on the Internet via Radio Comunidade USA. Nelson Leite, who always had a passion for the game, was finally getting his long-time wish - to be a play-by-play announcer. There had been several attempts for this to happen, even years prior, as in 2009 in New Jersey for the Red Bulls, when that organization refused to allow him to do so, however, nothing panned out for him.
Click on the image to listen to Nelson’s goooooaaaaalll.
Nelson had been contacted weeks prior by a familiar name, Taylor Amarante, a young man who was an Account Executive for the Quakes and had reached out to all Portuguese media for a special dinner to introduce a wellknown Portuguese player, Yannick Djalo. Yannick was on loan from Benfica, which was a huge deal for the Portuguese Community.
That night, Nelson was talking to several club leaders about his experiences with the Red Bulls when he lived in New Jersey, and out came the question from Jed Mette who was, at the time, Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Would you consider doing the play-by-play for us in Portuguese?”, he asked. Nelson would take advantage of the opportunity, it was something that he had always wanted to do at a professional team level. Earthquakes! Major League Soccer! It was a challenge since he had never done a play-by-play, especially in Portuguese, so there were more flashes in the first few games, but that night in April it all changed!
6
At the wobbly press box at Buck Shaw, Nelson was doing the play-by-play, and Taylor joined him for the second half at a 0-0 tie, Yannick came into the game, and if you believe in magic, Nelson was doing the call when Yannick, on the 66th minute, scored his first goal for San Jose! Nelson and Taylor both screamed the goal on the radio, and it was a truly magical moment for Nelson, Taylor, Yannick, and the Portuguese Community, not only in San Jose but in the entire United States.
Even though there isn’t an actual recording of that ‘golo” in Portuguese, the video is available below.
After several seasons, the evolution to the PAMA platform, and the move to the state-of-the-art Avaya Stadium (Pay-Pal Park today), Nelson brought in several additions to the broadcast, like Anderson Terra, and Michael Rocha.
Michael Rocha, a Quakes superfan, and successful entrepreneur keeps the Portuguese connection alive and well, while displaying the vast knowledge of the game as an in-game commentator.
As Nelson’s professional and personal life became increasingly busy, the command torch was passed to Michael Rocha; he and Anderson have been doing majority of the coverage for the last 6 seasons.
Anderson and Michael have been the two familiar voices for the last few years, with Nelson occasionally joining them.
Anderson the Brazilian broadcaster is the perfect fit to connect the Quakes to the Brazilian fans and also make that connection with the Brazilian players on the team as well.
8
The dedication from the entire PAMA MEDIA team, who mostly lives in the San Joaquin Valley, over 100 miles from the Stadium, and covers every home game, was the reason why in 2022 the Earthquakes awarded the Anderson, Michael, and Nelson with the Devotion Scarf, a very selective recognition to only a handful of individuals for their devotion to the club, for all of the hard work that they had put into each home game.
Last month, the team welcomed their newest addition, Danny Pinto ( Host of the Seleção Podcast on PAMA1 ) - another huge Portuguese soccer fan, and now part of the PAMA Quakes play-by-play team in the 11th season.
We invite all of the community to join us for every home game from Pay-Pal Park exclusively on PAMA Classic and tell all your friends and family, and be a part of something special.
Outside of the PLAY-BY-PLAY we are fortunate enough to Host Livestream Content from inside the PayPal Park during “Portuguese Heritage Night” Don’t forget to say “Olá” if you see us!

CHAMOMILE CHAMOMILE
THE PRETTY HERB THAT COULD THE PRETTY HERB THAT COULD
BY: YVE SOTO
BY: YVE SOTO
Let’s talk about herbs! Many of us see flowers and vines while on hikes and scenic drives, but do we really know what they are, or how they benefit us? Years ago, I dove headfirst into building my garden, and decided to focus on herbs. Not just any herbs, but herbs I felt I could use either fresh or dried. Let’s face it - gardening is a lot of work. I don’t want it to simply look pretty, I want it functional!
I always loved herbal teas. So, with a little research, I looked up the easiest herbs I could plant that I wouldn’t kill within the first two weeks! And, I found Chamomile! So, what’s the deal with Chamomile anyway? I’ll just list a few benefits of Chamomile you probably never knew!
Helps with diabetes and blood sugar
Can ease menstrual cramps
Can help with osteoporosis
Anti Inflammatory
Aides with sleep and relaxation
Immune health and eases cold symptoms
Can help with mild skin conditions
Simply to name a few - isn’t that an AMAZING list of benefits? Chamomile belongs to the Asteraceae family - it produces small pretty flowers that look like daisies and those can be used in multiple ways Chamomile also contains chemicals called flavonoids, which is most likely what contributes to all of the awesome benefits listed above.
What can we do
Here’s one of my favorite recipes for Chamomile tea!

For $50,000 a year, you could wake up to Belgian waffles with your university’s logo stamped onto it, but is it worth it?
Each student's housing depends on their choice of living, independently or rooming with others, students who live on campus must pay for a meal plan. Most campuses offer a variety of plans, these can include how many meals a week you may eat at the local dining halls and other amenities varying by cost. But does the price match the quality of the food, or does the repetition of choices not match the price tag?
At California Baptist University, they offer an extensive selection of meals ranging from “good meat, sushi, make-your-own omelets, and a salad and fruit bar.” Makena Martinez, a freshman at the private university, loves the variety of foods they have to offer. Roughly, the meal plans are $2,000 to $4,000 per semester for this university. Although Martinez pays more, she never gets bored of the plethora of food being served.
At another university, UC Davis, the meal plan is $1,600 to $2,200 per quarter depending on the plan chosen. A first-year student, Mateo Espinoza, believes the food is worth the price. “The food is definitely better than the average college dining commons. Espinoza loves the wide variety of choices Davis has to offer. With a pizza stand with different toppings each day, or Mongolian food next, Espinoza never gets tired of the food being served each week. Darren Sza, a dining employee and resident at UC Santa Cruz, loves the food each dining hall brings in. Santa Cruz is home to five different dining commodities, each with different themes and styles of food choices. The meal plans range from $1,200 to $2,500 per quarter. “I personally have seen the chefs and sous chefs put in real effort towards making the food for students and staff members to eat,” Sze says. “It can very easily get boring and tiring after a few weeks.” It’s very easy for students to become frustrated with the same choices of food given each week.
Specifically, if they are of the same theme or taste. However, Sze is proud of the options Santa Cruz tries to offer. “It is an unlimited buffet that upholds standards across all dining halls.”
At CSU Cal Poly, the meal plans offered range from $6,000 to $8,000 for the entire year. The variety of dining options consists of multiple fast-food restaurants. These include Chick-fil-A, Taco Bell, Subway, and Panda Express. Other amenities include different themed restaurants like Mexican, Chinese, Italian, Indian, and more. Each quarter a specific amount of cash is loaded onto the students’ “Poly Card.” With this, they can purchase any meals from any location on campus.
Amanda Beteta, a first-year at Cal Poly, enjoys the various restaurants she can feast at. “I have really appreciated having these comfort food options because they’re always a safe choice in case I don’t want to try anything new.” However, Beteta believes she could have saved more money if she didn’t have to pay for a meal plan. “I could spend much less on buying my own groceries for the week and making my own meals.” With such a wide variety of restaurants, Beteta isn’t worried about getting bored of her options.
A common problem for university students is the repetition of food. At CSU Fresno, students have made countless remarks on the same variety of food given every week in the single dining hall on campus. The two meal plans offered for first-year residents are gold and platinum. Each cost around $4,500 to $5,000. Each day, Fresno State offers three main courses in its dining hall. These meals change for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For the most part, the meals are the same each week besides a special option that is only sometimes available. This can be pasta, pho, salad, tacos, and others. The dining hall does offer a salad bar that does not changeKobie Perryman, a freshman resident, enjoys her routine. “It does get repetitive, but I just get creative with my options.” Perryman is prominent in keeping a clean diet as best as she can.
“I make what I can out of the food given to me.” Fresno State’s dining options aren’t her ideal choices, but she makes do with what she has. “At the end of the day, It’s not that bad.”
Another freshman at Fresno State, Evelyn Hernandez, offers a different outlook on her dining experience. “The food is the same every day of the week.” Hernandez is a fan of spicing things up and opting for change constantly. “They make the food no one wants, which leaves us eating the bad, unhealthy, everyday options.” With frustration for limited options, Hernandez says, “It’s garbage!”
The dining hall is not the only restaurant for Fresno State students to dine at. Other buildings include Subway, Fresno Snack Shacks, Panda Express, and Juice It Up. Unfortunately, this area closes at 5 p.m. each weekday. The Resident Student Union is home to options like Toss-N-Chops, The Habit, and Taco Bell. This building is also closed by 7 p.m. each day. Besides the dining hall, all options are closed on weekends, leaving residents with just one place to go. Hernandez wants variety, maybe not in her life, but at least in the food she chooses to pay and eat for. Perryman is content with the food, only because she has a creative technique to never get bored with her dining experience. This sparks the question of whether the school's income is the issue or the psychology of repetition. When a student is given limited options, and their dining hall consists of the same food each week, they are left with a feeling of hopelessness. Having the same schedule each day could cause some to go mad, it’s the same with our food. Not everyone may feel inclined to a spontaneous schedule, whether it’s day-to-day or just their food options. But, lots of individuals require an unpredictable lifestyle as they continue to grow.

I liked that I could not fully predict the book (which I can do unexpected plot twists which helped keep me engaged. There w was going to happen or set an idea on a character and had the things that made me cringe in a "keep me on the edge" kind of way if this were a movie. The anxiety!
The dislikes i had was that if this were a movie, Millie would really bother me. I didn't love her character. Some moments were a little eye rolling for me. I also could have gone without the repetitiveness of her back round.... honestly... How many times do we need to mention she was in prison?
If you are new to thrillers or enjoy reading them from time to time, I would highly recommend this book and this author. If you are an avid thriller reader/lover this book may not excite you so much but I would still highly recommend this author.
