It has been with hard work, integrity and dedication that PFSA has served the community for over one hundred years, and it is an example of what being Portuguese Proud and honored to serve is all about.

PAMA was founded on the same principles, to serve our community as a voice and much more for the needs of Luso Americans, and their descendants,to spread our culture, our language and our "orgulho"Those who are proud of their heritage, but may have felt disconnected, perhaps because they no longer speak the language, or there may not be a medium to connect them.

We work hard every day to serve as their bridge. We have more than a team, we have a family that is dedicated to helping our community grow. It is an honor and a privilege to have this partnership with PFSA.

DIOGO MACHADO

Add Fuel is a Portuguese visual artist Diogo Machado (b. 1980). A former graphic designer, his artistic practice has been focused on reinterpreting and playing with the language of traditional tile design, and that of the Portuguese tin-glazed ceramic azulejo in particular. Blending traditional and contemporary elements, his original vectorbased designs and stencil-based street art reveal an impressive complexity and a masterful attention to detail. Based on a combination of tessellations that create balance from symmetrical repetitions and visual illusion techniques such as trompe-l’œil, his multilayered patterned compositions create a poetic rhythm that plays with the viewer’s perception and the possibilities of interpretation. He has been showcasing his work in both solo and group exhibitions since 2006, as well as participating in some of the world’s leading urban art events

Fadista SAMANTHAROCHA

Samantha Pacheco Rocha was born in San Jose, California to father Paul Pacheco from Graciosa, Açores, and mother Elsa Pacheco from San Jose, California. ( Maternal grandparents were from Pico, Açores.) From a young age, this 2nd/3rd generation of Portuguese descent young woman was always very involved in the Portuguese community.

Samantha played in the filarmonica Nova Aliança, and was involved in the band hall for over 10 years, which played a big part in her love for her Portuguese community and culture. From a young age Samantha always had a passion for singing, and was able to bring that into her culture by taking part in danças de carnaval, being the maestra of the dance group of Nova Aliança from 2015-2018, singing in ranchinos de natal (Christmas caroling) and singing in musical teatros (musical theater).

Being a part of those activities showcased Samantha and introduced her in 2018 to musicians Chico Avila and Manuel Escoabr, who approached Samantha to enter the fado singing part of the culture. Since then , Samantha has found a love and passion for singing fado, and has been lucky enough to share the stage with fellow family members and fado singers, Sandra Pinheiro Pacheco, Katrina Pacheco and David Silveira Garcia. Samantha has been to the island of Terceira in the Açores two times for the festas Sanjoaninas to sing fado, once in 2019 and the other in 2024, and has been singing around the bay area and central valley at Portuguese associations since 2018. Samantha is a proud Portuguese American who loves to go to Portuguese bullfights here in California and in the Açores, as well as watching her husband Joseph Rocha play in the Portuguese conjunto Sem Dúvida. Without the Portuguese community in California, Samantha wouldn’t be the person she is today.

Earlier this year, PALCUS launched its new signature event - Heritage Portugal, inviting a group of 12 Luso-Americans to participate in a cultural enrichment program throughout the mainland and Azores. This immersion focused on creating connection points to the nation’s past, present, and future - highlighting the most unique elements of Portuguese culture, discussing the country’s current sociopolitical contexts, and helping them find their roles in the society of tomorrow.

Drafted and developed by the cohort themselves, the now-available 2024 Heritage Portugal Program ($35, hardcover) gives readers a peek into the day-to-day of the program and insights into the minds of the participants Across these chapters, individuals will be able to understand more about the cohort’s individual stories, insights and reflections by PALCUS leadership, and the impact of a new commitment toward Portuguese cultural investment.
