Exciting Announcement!

Painted Sky Center for the Arts is now the new owner of the building located at 116 NW Bridge Street! We are dedicated to making this new building a great community facility and meeting space that will be open to everyone.

We can't thank our community enough for all your support to get us here! However, this journey is not over yet. PSCA received gap funding to secure the building and still needs to raise funds to make this dream a reality, which is why it is critical to have community support for this building acquisition.

PSCA would like to thank the Roundhouse Foundation and the Oregon Community Foundation for the down payment of the building. We would also like to thank the Maddens for being great partners and working with us to make this happen.

The art center really needs your support and advocacy, so stay tuned for the PSCA Capital Campaign Kick-off announcement for this project!

Come make your very own Chia Critter!

In this two-hour workshop, Genevieve will walk you through the hand building steps to make any critter you want. Chia sheep. Chia Chicken. Chia Hairy Cow. If you can imagine it, we can make it. After your Chia Critter is fired, you will also go home with chia seeds and instructions on growing and caring for your new pet!

In our first class, we will learn the components and process of creating a successful pit fired pot. Students will then be given two weeks to work independently utilizing open studio time (included in class tuition for the duration of the class) to build their pieces for the pit firing.

Students and their invited guests will then meet at Nomad Art Studio in John Day for an evening pit fire and family style dinner then meet again the next morning to open the cooled pit to reveal the magical alchemy of earth and fire!

Come learn the basics of throwing on the wheel!

We will learn how to center clay, open a form, pull walls, shape, trim, and glaze through demos and lots of hands-on practice.

For those with some wheel throwing experience, this class will also go over some more advanced techniques and help you refine your throwing skills even more.

Are you looking for a fun and easy way to get a taste of making your own pottery? This workshop is for you!

You will receive an unfired wheel thrown cylinder to carve, paint, and decorate as you choose. Your mug or tumbler will then be fired and you will be able to pick it up a few weeks after the workshop.

Children ages 8 and up are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Do you learn better one-on-one or prefer small sized classes? This is an opportunity to have individual instruction throwing on the potter's wheel. An hour of private instruction paired with Open Studio time can be a huge boost to your confidence and throwing skills!

This time can be tailor made for where you are on your potter's journey - from green beginners to potters looking for more advanced techniques such as lids, handles, sets, glazing techniques, and more.

Choose private lessons, or grab your bestie, your sweetie, or even your snarky teenager and take a semiprivate class together and make some memories!

Kara Doescher I started doing pottery in high school and instantly fell in love with it. I took as many ceramics classes in college as I could fit into a busy schedule. I can't resist the methodical but messy nature of making pottery, and I love being able to make beautiful but useful pieces.

Since moving to Grant County, I've been so happy to find a ceramics studio with such an incredibly kind, welcoming community of artists. When I'm not playing with mud in the studio you can find me doing something (anything!) outdoors with my border collie, baking, and trying out any kind of arts and crafts.

Genevieve Paddock Like so many other potters, I was first introduced to clay in a high school ceramics class. By senior year, I was taking most of my lunches in the ceramics room with the other art geeks, spending as much time playing with clay as I could.

But, again, it was the clay’s versatility that I was drawn to.

You can make it look like anything you can imagine - tree bark, skin, leather, metal - you name it! And the meditative spin of a wheel, who can resist that?

To pursue my interest in the arts, I attended Bennington College in Vermont, a school with a deep history in ceramic arts, where I received my B.A. in ceramics. During that time, I also worked in a ceramics factory, under glazing literally hundreds of pots a day! The following year I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and intern at the Capitol Children’s Museum and create a ceramics studio and program. In 2003, I moved to Grant County where I met my husband, David, and joined him in the Nomad Sign Art studio and learned the old school art of hand lettering and hand-crafting signs. These days my 500-pound potter’s wheel sits cozily in our living room next to the woodstove, where our whole family can learn to play on it.

In this class we will be making oil tan leather moccasins for your chosen shoe size. These are ankle Inca boots that tie in front with a leather lace. We will be hand sewing and punching holes and also using the sewing machine. I will need each student to send me their chosen size.

In this class students will be introduced to the basics of leather tooling. They will stamp or tool four leather coasters that will be theirs to keep. We will go over the basics of geometric stamping as well as the basics of western floral tooling.

If you have your own tools, please bring them. There will be tools available.

Open to all current and recent leather students (Participants must have taken a PSCA leather class within the past 6 months) There is not a teacher on site during open studio time. Open studio is based on availability MondayThursday except during scheduled class times.

Leon Pielstick Leon started leathercraft and tooling at age 10.

He made his first saddle with a Tandy Kit at age 14. He has made an abundance of belts and wallets and has mentored other leather workers in leather tooling and saddle making.

Leon attended OSU and graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School.

He was a practicing veterinarian in Burns until retirement and moved to John Day in 2017.

Julie Smucker Hey, I'm Julie Smucker! I've always loved horses and leather and all things western. I started in leatherwork a little while ago and then apprenticed under the amazing Clair Kehrberg!

Now I enjoy making, and working with, a variety of leather projects.

Cassandra Coxen My name is Cassandra, I am a writer, who just moved back to Grant County. I am here because I would love to connect with other writers and contribute to the creative community in town.

Currently, I am workshopping with Chuck Palahniuk and developing a collection of short stories from a series of pieces I began to present at Chuck and Karen's Open Mic night in Portland. It's been such an incredible experience.

Makes me wonder about what it would look like if we did the same in Grant County. We have a lot of good storytellers out here.

Literary Arts is a passion for me that began here in Grant County where I was born and raised. In part thanks to the community, I now hold a BA in English from Colorado State University. I have helped develop many independent books, working with both independent publishers and freelance writers.

Currently, for work, I am employed as Support Team Lead at WEO Media (6 years), a small, full-service dental marketing company. I specialize in website development, leadership and communication, with advanced knowledge in SEO, Social Media, HTML and CSS. I am looking forward to connecting with anyone who has an interest in hearing or telling good stories.

For this class we will be choosing a public domain photo of a cartoon, anime, or comic book character. We will help you use settings in Google to find a qualifying picture.

Then we will teach you an easy way to scale it up yourself into a 22" by 28" poster!

During this class we will teach you how to accurately draw and paint an enlarged version of this photo yourself.

This class is dedicated to teaching a technique-mainly used by spray paint artists, but that we use for acrylic all of the time. And you will learn how too. Class participants will pick between “dream or scream”-scape. Which will also determine which premade color pallet you will get. We will use the technique to make the background. Then we will add silhouettes along the bottom and sides.

Therefore, creating a “Dreamscape” or “Scream-scape”.

Angel Carpenter I'm Angel Carpenter, owner of WILDbrushes Art with Angel. I provide all the supplies, and we'll focus on the positive while we relax and paint. My background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts (drawing and painting). I love teaching young and young at heart step-by-step acrylic paintings that are fun for beginners and are also enjoyable for advanced painters. My husband and I live in Grant County, Oregon, and are empty-nesters with four grown sons.

Badger Foster I’ve been creating things since I can remember. I phrase it like that because I don’t just draw or paint. I often find myself inspired by various objects. I paint on anything from bones, to clothes, to strange wood formations. I hope to spread this message that “YOU can create anything.” For example, with little to no woodworking experience I’ve built many things exactly as I envisioned them. All it takes is will power, and imagination. However, with some guidance you can go even further.

Julian Jordan I am a skilled and passionate artist that specializes in bringing cartoon characters to life on crazy abstract backgrounds. I tend to have a vibrant and playful approach to art that I hope to share in a class setting. My main goal is to show you there are no boundaries or limits on what you can create. Anything and everything has the potential to send a message and inspire others. All you need is to be shown the tools to unlock it.
