We are now accepting submissions for our Fall 2024 catalog cover contest.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Greetings from PSCA and thank you for your interest in our summer 2024 programs. The dry, hot, high dessert summer weather means different things to everyone. For some, this is the busiest time of year as preparations are made for tending crops, moving herds to summer pasture, cutting hay, selecting county fair entries and shuttling the kids to camp, baseball and 4H meetings, and everywhere else they need to go. For others, this slower-paced season provides an ideal opportunity to enjoy quality time with family and friends, get in some well-deserved “R & R,” and re-charge the batteries

Whatever plans you may have for the next few weeks, we hope that you can make time to take advantage of our amazing summer term classes and workshops Some of which will only be offered this summer! For example, we are excited about our upcoming, 3-day, Black Smithing workshop in June (See page centerfold pages for details.)

ALSO IN JUNE, WE ARE THRILLED TO WELCOME AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR AND SPEAKER, JANE KIRKPATRICK TO PSCA FOR AN EVENING OF STORIES AND BOOK SIGNING. (SEE PAGE 10 FOR DETAILS.)

Although some of our art instructors will be taking the summer off to pursue other interests, we will still have some of your favorite classes to choose from, such as painting, leather working, and Conversational Spanish And don’t forget about our open studio passes, which allow you to come in and work on your own time

In addition, we are excited to announce that we will continue to offer our After School Kid’s Art Club into the summer! But instead of a short amount of time every day after school, kids from kindergarten through 6th grade can spend Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with us, learning all about art and making some fun and creative projects (See page 19 for details)

Because of their limited number, summertime classes and workshops fill up quickly, so please don’t delay, register today!

IN AUGUST, BE SURE TO STOP BY OUR BOOTH AT THE GRANT COUNTY FAIR AND SAY “HOWDY” OR CHECK OUT ONE OF OUR FUN ART DEMONSTRATIONS THAT WILL BE GOING ON THROUGHOUT FAIR WEEK.

Members, keep a lookout for your personal invitation to our upcoming, exclusive members only events.

Volunteer opportunities abound throughout the entire year Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, such items as summer projects, help with staffing the fair booth, help planning our annual fundraiser event and many other things To become a PSCA Volunteer, see our volunteer opportunities on page 13 and on our website.

We hope that you have a wonderful summer and as always, thank you for your time and for supporting our mission to bring the arts and arts education to Grant County.

Ceramics

Do you prefer to learn in a smaller group? Or does your schedule just never line up with the group class schedules? Try a private or semi-private lesson!

Semi-private lessons are great for dates, groups of friends, coworkers, or kids and parents!

Private/semi-private lessons will be based on your individual experience and goals and can be focused on wheel throwing or hand building and any part of the pottery process (throwing, trimming, glazing, etc).

Do you learn better one-on-one or prefer small sized classes? This is an opportunity to have individual instruction throwing on the potter's wheel. An hour of private instruction paired with Open Studio time can be a huge boost to your confidence and throwing skills!

This time can be tailor made for where you are on your potter's journey - from green beginners to potters looking for more advanced techniques such as lids, handles, sets, glazing techniques, and more.

Choose private lessons, or grab your bestie, your sweetie, or even your independant teenager and take a semi-private class together and make some memories!

Your ceramics studio pass includes: All open studio hours

Multiple fired pieces

Personal shelf space (term passes only)

Studio glazes and underglazes

Guest passes

You may use open studio time to work on projects with clay you have bought from our studio, unless otherwise approved by studio managers.

All firing costs (not covered by open studio pass) will be invoiced at the end of the term.

I started doing pottery in high school and instantly fell in love with it. I took as many ceramics classes in college as I could fit into a busy schedule. I can't resist the methodical but messy nature of making pottery, and I love being able to make beautiful but useful pieces. Since moving to Grant County, I've been so happy to find a ceramics studio with such an incredibly kind, welcoming community of artists. When I'm not playing with mud in the studio you can find me doing something (anything!) outdoors with my border collie, baking, and trying out any kind of arts and crafts.

Genevieve Paddock Genevieve Paddock

Like so many other potters, I was first introduced to clay in a high school ceramics class. To pursue my interest in the arts, I attended Bennington College in Vermont, a school with a deep history in ceramic arts, where I received my B.A. in ceramics. During that time, I also worked in a ceramics factory, under glazing literally hundreds of pots a day! The following year I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and intern at the Capitol Children’s Museum and create a ceramics studio and program. In 2003, I moved to Grant County where I met my husband, David, and joined him in the Nomad Sign Art studio and learned the old school art of hand lettering and hand-crafting signs. I began teaching hand building and wheel thrown pottery at Painted Sky in 2022 and am continually inspired by the Art Center’s amazing community. These days my 500-pound potter’s wheel sits in our home studio, where our whole family can learn to play on it.

I grew up in John Day and always had a love of languages. Upon graduation I traveled and lived in various communities. Spanish became a second language to me during my two years serving in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. I am now living back in the John Day area with my husband whose native language is Spanish. We are passionate about teaching our 1-year-old daughter to be bilingual and I hope to share my love of the language with my hometown.

I started sewing, embroidering, and crocheting when I was about 10 years old. Started quilting when I moved to Grant County in 2001 and knitting shortly thereafter. I am in love with all arts and crafts and have taken several classes here at the Arts Center including painting, pottery, and felt applique. I love sharing what I have learned with others and am excited about being part of the Fiber Arts department.

Jodi Lee Jodi Lee

My passion for fashion, theater and the arts began at a very young age. I was highly involved in the theater program during my high school years, both on and off the stage. I found myself constantly drawn to the designing and altering of clothes. My involvement in the arts and fashion world lead me to a small modeling career where I got to experience living abroad. After a few years of traveling, I settled in Los Angeles where my clothing label, SandBox Rebel was born.

I am the Youth Afterschool Program Art Teacher. I am from the Grant County region and have been a resident since 2020. Currently, I attend Eastern Oregon University online, full-time to pursue my degree in the field of education with a Minor in Art. My passion has always been art as I love the freedom and expression of drawing whatever transpires in my mind. I am skilled in drawing, mixed media, and digital art.

I work at Painted Sky where I teach youth elementary level students about the foundations of art and the joy of creativity. We have a blast learning many various forms of art and art techniques. I am a big believer in education and the advocacy for art in education. I believe that it is important to teach art because it is form of creative expression and can help students find outlets they need to de-stress or feel great about themselves as they explore its many forms.
