Ken made this beautiful and functional birdhouse for the Prairie City Garden Club to raffle off during Christmas on the Prairie this coming November. The proceeds of which go back into our community. The majority of Ken’s supplies are repurposed from other projects and the burn pile at the mill. Ken and his wife, Marjean retired to Prairie City in 2012 and couldn’t be happier to be a part of such a tight knit community.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

We here at Painted Sky Center for the Arts are extremely excited that Spring is on the horizon. Spring is a time that has always been synonymous with feelings such as “awakenings,” “rebirths,” “transformations” and “a fresh start.” Painted Sky Center for the Arts experienced all these in 2023 with the purchase of our new building, the addition of our first official Executive Director, and the addition of new instructors and programming, just to name a few.

That is why Painted Sky Center for the Arts is celebrating this season and we are thrilled to be sharing our Spring 2024 Class Catalog with you. Every one of our team members and volunteers were busy all winter getting our new departments set up and organizing some amazing art class offerings for Spring Term 2024. With great thanks to the Juniper Arts Counsil, we have added a new Sewing and Fiber Department to our programming. With a new department comes new Painted Sky Center for the Arts Instructors and new, never before offered classes such as Sewing 101, Embroidery 101, Basket Weaving, Applique and more! In addition to our new Painted Sky Center for the Arts Sewing & Fiber Department, we are also incredibly happy to begin our Cultural offerings by including a language class for the first time ever! Our new Conversational Spanish Class is perfect for those wanting to learn a second language, brush up on the Spanish you already know or just learn some basics before your next vacation. You can join the Spanish class on a weekly, monthly, or full-term basis. Visual Arts classes have been a part of Painted Sky Center for the Arts since we first opened our doors in 2019, but this Spring Term we have added even more class selections to choose from like perspective drawing and beginners charcoal drawing. I know my personal paintings could benefit from some perspective training! How about yours? If change is not your thing, don’t worry, we have you covered. Your favorite painting classes are not going anywhere, and of course we will always have leather working, ceramics and our free meetups. As a reminder to those of you who are parents, Spring 2024 is the last term before summer break for our Afterschool and Friday Morning Kid’s Art Club. Please do not let your kindergarten through sixth graders miss out on this opportunity for a unique form of education. Youth art classes have been shown to improve fine motor skills, visual and spatial processing, memory, self-control, increase overall academic performance, improve the ability to de-stress, increase self-esteem and help with social skills. We here in John Day, Grant County and beyond, are so fortunate to have a resource such as Painted Sky Center for the Arts available for use. Please do not let an opportunity like this pass you by. Come check out what we are all about and try one of our sample art classes for free at our free Spring Fling Open House Event on April 13, 2024. Other fun events scheduled for this term will be our first official Volunteer Orientation on February 24th and our Ceramic Department’s Chili Feed and Cook-off on March 24th . Details for these events and classes can be found within this catalog and on our website, www.paintedskycenter.com. We cannot wait to see you in class and at our Painted Sky Center for the Arts events! Happy Creating, Valerie Munyon

Kara Doescher I started doing pottery in high school and instantly fell in love with it. I took as many ceramics classes in college as I could fit into a busy schedule. I can't resist the methodical but messy nature of making pottery, and I love being able to make beautiful but useful pieces. Since moving to Grant County, I've been so happy to find a ceramics studio with such an incredibly kind, welcoming community of artists. When I'm not playing with mud in the studio you can find me doing something (anything!) outdoors with my border collie, baking, and trying out any kind of arts and crafts.

Joshua Kehrberg Joshua began making ceramics in 2013 and has since gotten a BFA in sculpture, worked in an array of Portland's ceramic factories, and worked alongside other professional Oregon ceramic artists. His works are both thrown as well as hand-built forms and sculptures. He attempts to make pieces that appear as if formed by nature rather than the human hand, creating unique works or organic yet functional ceramics.

Genevieve Paddock Like so many other potters, I was first introduced to clay in a high school ceramics class. To pursue my interest in the arts, I attended Bennington College in Vermont, a school with a deep history in ceramic arts, where I received my B.A. in ceramics. During that time, I also worked in a ceramics factory, under glazing literally hundreds of pots a day! The following year I had the opportunity to go to Washington D.C. and intern at the Capitol Children’s Museum and create a ceramics studio and program. In 2003, I moved to Grant County where I met my husband, David, and joined him in the Nomad Sign Art studio and learned the old school art of hand lettering and hand-crafting signs. I began teaching hand building and wheel thrown pottery at Painted Sky in 2022 and am continually inspired by the Art Center’s amazing community. These days my 500-pound potter’s wheel sits in our home studio, where our whole family can learn to play on it.

Ceramics Committee We are a group of individuals who meet monthly to discuss ceramic department needs. Members actively participate in the upkeep and maintenance of the studio. Many of us also teach classes or host open studios. Stop by and say hi! If you are interested in joining the ceramics committee, please contact Lizz or Kara at paintedsky.ceramics@gmail.com From left to right: Amy Charette, Genevieve Paddock, Kara Doescher (co-manager), Melody Feden, Brenna DesJardin, Jemery Henderson and Lizz Blackburn (co-manager).

photo credits to Grant County Museum Painted Sky Center for the Arts is excited to announce the launch of a cultural arts department where we will offer a gathering place to celebrate, promote and inspire art, culture, and history. Our mission is to offer the community a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and heritage of Eastern Oregon. The discovery of gold first attracted people to Grant County from other countries and states searching for a new life in the west. It was at one time a melting pot of European, Chinese, African American and South American pioneers who introduced different languages, traditions, and customs to the area. Prior to the gold rush, the land was home to the Northern Paiute Tribe, which we acknowledge and honor as the first inhabitants of Grant County. We invite creatives, artists, teachers, writers, historians and interested individuals and/or groups to join our department. Class submissions may be submitted through Painted Sky Center for the Arts website at

Heidi Brooks

Heidi Brooks’ passion is researching local and cultural history and sharing stories of the past. Historical Fiction is her favorite genre because it blends historical events and characters with imagination. Some of her favorite authors are Jane Kirkpatrick, Sandra Dalles, Kathleen Grissom, and Sadeqa Johnson. Another favorite is the author of this quarter's book club pick, K.T. Blakemore.

Bre Apostol I grew up in John Day and always had a love of languages. Upon graduation I traveled and lived in various communities. Spanish became a second language to me during my two years serving in the Peace Corps in Costa Rica. I am now living back in the John Day area with my husband whose native language is Spanish. We are passionate about teaching our 1-year-old daughter to be bilingual and I hope to share my love of the language with my hometown.

Diane Higbie

I started sewing, embroidering, and crocheting when I was about 10 years old. Started quilting when I moved to Grant County in 2001 and knitting shortly thereafter. I am in love with all arts and crafts and have taken several classes here at the Arts Center including painting, pottery, and felt applique. I love sharing what I have learned with others and am excited about being part of the Fiber Arts department.

Betsy Koncerak

I started weaving about 35 years ago in college. After college I had a registered business in Pennsylvania, Montana and South Dakota called Wildcat Run Basketry. I’ve taught basketweaving classes for kids (10-15) and adults.

Jodi Lee

Jodi lee's passion for fashion, theater and the arts began at a very young age. She was highly involved in the theater program during her high school years (both on and off the stage) and found herself constantly designing and altering clothes. Her involvement in the arts and fashion world lead her to a small modeling career where she got the opportunity to live abroad in such cities as Athens, Hong Kong, Milano and more. After a few years of traveling, she settled in Los Angeles where the birth of SandBox Rebel (and her son, Aurthur) took place.

Participants are responsible for acquiring their own book. Please contact Lizz Blackburn at lizz.blackburn@outlook.com if you have any trouble finding a copy.

Blakemore.

Lizz Blackburn

In 2020, Lizz embarked on a reading journey, discovering solace in the enchanting world of Harry Potter amidst the global pandemic. Since then, she's become an avid reader delving into various genres but consistently gravitated towards fantasy. She loves discussing books, some of her favorite reads in 2023 stemmed from engaging conversations at Painted Sky. Thrilled by a love for literature and a desire to build community, she is excited to kick off Painted Sky’s very own Book Club alongside Heidi Brooks.
