Shoprite of Pick n Pay? KLEINMOND – Die dorp gaan teen paasnaweek aanstaande jaar ‘n nuwe winkelkompleks hê en die waarskynlikheid is goed dat of Shoprite of Pick ‘n Pay ‘n supermark in die nuwe kompleks gaan bedryf. Dit volg na die planne vir die beoogde ontwikkeling by Mthimkhulu Village onlangs finaal deur die munisipaliteit goedgekeur is. Die ontwikkelaar, mnr Pieter Smith van die cpsgroup, het vandeesweek bevestig dat die projek die finale groenlig gekry het. Hy het aan die Herald gesê die kompleks sal in die orde van 2600vkm groot wees, waarvan ‘n nuwe supermark ongeveer 1400vkm sal opneem. Smith het gesê dat daar tans met beide Shoprite en Pick ‘n Pay onderhandel word om die ankerhuurder by die kompleks te word. Volgens Smith sal die res van die sentrum bestaan uit lynwinkels soos onder meer Ackermans.

Hy het gesê die plan is om teen Oktober hierdie jaar aan die sentrum te begin bou en hopelik teen paasnaweek aanstaande jaar oop te maak. Die enigste verandering wat tot dusver aan die planne aangebring is, is om die afleweringgebied van die oostekant van die gebou (langs die bestaande woonhuise) na die noordwestekant te verskuif. Die planne maak voorsiening vir altesaam 154 motorstaanplekke, digby die bestaande ingang na Mthimkhulu.

‘n Bekende inwoner van Kleinmond, wat saam met sy Pa amper 30 jaar lank Kleinmond Slaghuis bedryf het, is verlede Woensdag op Hermanus oorlede. Kleinmond Slaghuis was in die gebou waar King Kong Padstal tans is. Kobus (Chops) le Roux is op 27 April 1948 gebore. In 1969 het hy en sy Pa, oom Kok le Roux, die slaghuis begin. In 1992 is oom Kock en Kobus se vrou, Jeanette, in dieselfde week oorlede. Chops

het egter nog ‘n paar jaar die slaghuis bedryf. Hy het nog eers op Kleinmond aangebly, maar is later na Hermanus waar hy by SOFCA versorg is. Hy laat twee dogters en ‘n seun agter, sowel as sy drie susters.

Sy een suster, me. Jeanette Viljoen, woon op Kleinmond.

Die herinneringsdiens vind op Dinsdag 25 Julie om 11:00 in die NG kerkgebou op Kleinmond plaas.

On Thursday, 13 July 2017, a delegation led by Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Pam Tswhete, paid a visit to the Preekstoel Water Purification Plant in Hermanus. Hosted by the Overstrand Municipality, the visit was in keeping with the Department’s study of various water and sanitation projects that could offer countenance to the drought and subsequent dwindling water shortages, experienced in a number of public water supply schemes or dams across the Country. A situation made worse by pro-longed lower-than normal rainfall in the months preceding.

Mitigating measures considered by the Department to ensure the Country’s water resources become more viable, include the strict implementation of drought operating rules at all dams; increasing the water mix especially groundwater utilisation, rain harvesting, re-use of return flows and packaged desalination plants; reducing operational risks by proper infrastructure operation and maintenance with associated skills development; implemen-

tation of water conservation and demand management programmes and climate research, as well as hydrological and geo-hydrological monitoring.

Commencing on 30 September 2011, the R85.1 million Preekstoel project was made possible through funding between the Overstrand Municipality (R57.6 million), the Department of Water and Sanitation (R20.6 million) and the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) (R6.9 million). Added to that, Aurecon were engaged as consulting engineers, and Inyanga Projects and PCI Africa as civil and mechanical and electrical contractors respectively. Umvoto Africa (Pty) Ltd was further contracted as consultants to support the municipality in the development of its well-fields in the region.

The need for the plant was born mostly by urban growth, a swell of new business and an increasing rise of households in the area. Further upgrades were hence done to accommodate future development that could be restrained by threatened

water supply, especially when rainfall is below average.

As a first of its kind in SouthAfrica, the specific purpose of this plant is to remove the very high iron and manganese content from the borehole water, before being blended with the treated surface water from the De Bos Dam, through a unique bio-filtration system used to remove high manganese and iron content found in ground water. This entails creating ideal conditions for specific iron and manganese bacteria to grow in the filter media.

In the process of purification, the bacteria in turn consume the iron and manganese in the water. The potential of hydrogen (pH) and the dissolved oxygen content are controlled to create the right conditions for the bacteria.

Speaking from the site, the Deputy Minister said, “We’ve been working closely with the Overberg District Municipality, including the Overstrand, Swellendam, Grabouw and Struisbaai Municipalities, to ensure continued supply of water through the construction

and maintenance of waste water treatment works such as this in the region.”

“I have to thank the Overstrand Municipality, its management and operational staff, as too the contractors who collectively have demonstrated the best skills-set ever seen. I salute them for the smooth and seamless transfer of skills, whilst keeping costs to a minimum. The Overstrand is setting the bar for other local municipalities. It would be in our best interest to learn from this experience and share our findings and information gathered with the rest of the country,” she enthused. The Deputy Minister also made a point of thanking the media in attendance for their continued support of the work of the Department.

In closing, she urged the community to protect the facility to ensure it remains functional and laid an appeal to use water sparingly, not waste water and to report water leaks found at homes, schools and other municipal and government facilities.

Henna (‘n skuilnaam) het besluit om die boonste deel van die huis waar sy en haar broer op Kleinmond woon te verhuur vir ‘n ekstra inkomste. Alles lyk op die oog af in orde, die huurder lyk respektabel. Die man vertel hy is ‘n doktor wat besig is om ‘n boek te skryf. Hy is nou kort terug uit Engeland. Hy verskaf sy bankstate en ID dokument en die kontrak word onderteken.

Die deposito en die eerste maand se huur word geredelik betaal.

Kort hierna begin die probleme.

Die huur word nie verder betaal nie. Die huurder voer aan daar is waterlekke en bied aan om dit reg te maak en kom vorendag met ‘n kwotasie van R39 000. Dit word nie aanvaar nie en ‘n ander loodgieter doen die nodige herstelwerk.

Intussen versleg verhoudinge

tussen die partye in so ‘n mate dat die saak by die polisie draai. Die paartjie wat huur beweer teenoor ander dat Henna “mal” is (sy ly wel aan ‘n geestestoestand) en kry ‘n interdik wat Henna verbied om die boonste verdieping van die huis waar sy woon, te betree. Henna, kry op haar beurt ‘n beskermingsbevel teen haar huurders. Vriende van Henna beweer die huurders is doelbewus besig om haar oor die afgrond te dryf. Hulle beweer die huurders neem bv. die geblaf van Henna se hondjies op en speel dit dan weer terug om haar te ontsenu.

Henna beweer haar huurders wil haar leed aandoen. Dit ontaard in ‘n bose kringloop.

Die huurder, kom ons noem hom Johan (skuilnaam), en sy vriendin betaal niks verder nie en bly nou al drie maande verniet, skynbaar onaangeraak deur al die onsmaaklikheid

met hul onmiddelike bure.

Johan het nie ‘n rekord van ernstige misdade nie (nog nie) maar is bekend daarvoor dat hy mense manipuleer. ‘n Paar vinnige oproepe na ‘n buurdorp bevestig dit. Hy skep die indruk van ‘n hoogs intelligente mens.

Daar is jammerlike verhale uit sy verlede en hy vertel dit skynbaar vir almal wat bereid is om te luister.

Daarby huiwer hy nie om mense te dreig nie en ken hy belangrike mense, beweer hy. Mense soos oud-polisie-generaals en ander in intelligensie kringe.

Hulle ken hom natuurlik nie, daar is navraag gedoen. Wat hy probeer sê is – moenie met my lol nie, ek kan die wêreld vir jou moeilik maak. Dis natuurlik twak en deel van sy taktiek.

Daar is nog heelwat ander tekens dat alles nie pluis is nie.

Hy is volgens alle aanduidings nie ‘n doktor nie, maar ‘n

loodgieter en het volgens sy facebook profiel voorheen by ‘n onderneming in Engeland gewerk. Hoe dit ookal sy – daar is reeds oorgenoeg tekens dat hierdie ‘n nagmerrie is wat wag om te gebeur.

Onderwyl die name in die voorgaande denkbeeldig is, is die situasie ‘n werklike een wat hom tans in ons dorp afspeel.

Wees bitterlik versigtig wanneer jy jou eiendom uitverhuur.

Doen behoorlik navraag oor potensiële huurders en doen ook ‘n kredietnavraag.

Intussen het Johan teenoor ‘n plaaslike prokureur onderneem om teen 1 Julie uit te trek. Dit het nie gebeur nie. Wees maar op jou hoede vir Johan en sy soort. Hy en sy vriendin gaan binnekort na ‘n nuwe blyplek soek – hopelik ver van hier af, soos in Gauteng of KwaZuluNatal, of beter nog – hoekom nie terug Engeland toe nie?

Nog ‘n koppie?

Hoe lyk dit met ‘n kommetjie gaat!

Ek praat nou onder korreksie, maar ek het dit op goeie gesag (my oorlede Pa) dat die mense in die Noordweste van koffie gepraat het as “gaat”. (Om te sê “my oorlede Pa”, is soos om sand te kou. Conrad wat in ons straat gebly het toe ons kinders was, het van “oorlede Pa” gepraat, want sy Pa is dood toe hy nog klein was en sy Ma is weer getroud. Toe word sý Pa “oorlede Pa”. Dit was altyd vir my so verkeerd. (Dit net terloops) Terug by die “gaat”. My goeie gesag het gesê die mense wat

hy in die Noordweste ontmoet het terwyl hy films gemaak het, het hom dikwels “ ’n kommetjie gaat” aangebied. Hulle het die pitte/bone self gerooster en die gaat was altyd heerlik, veral vir ‘n man wat sy koffie kon geniet.

Ek het nou nog die meuletjie waarmee hulle op die plaas hul eie pitte gemaal het, nadat dit gerooster is. Die meuletjie het, na die plaas by Middelburg (Tvl) verkoop is, op ‘n familielid se plaas in die Vrystaat geëindig waar hy van tyd tot tyd met oestyd ‘n handvol koring gemaal het wanneer hulle die gehalte van die oes wou toets.

Die goeie gesag het dit glo verontwaardig gegryp en Kaap toe gebring waar dit nou by my aan ‘n boekrak vasgeskroef is.

Die goeie gesag het gesê die geur van goeie koffie het hom altyd terug geneem na waar sy Ma die pitte in bietjie suiker rooster. Dit was sy werk om die pitte dan met die meuletjie te maal by die kombuistafel.

Die Ouma se koffie het in ‘n koffiesakkie op die koolstoof staan en trek. Die sakke het sy op haar Singermasjientjie gemaak en gereeld vervang.

Die koffie is met warm melk gedrink, “en dan maak die room so ‘n velletjie bo-op”. Ek is nou nie deel van die velletjie brigade nie, maar ‘n skuimpie op die koffie is darem baie lekker.

Die Ouma self het nie koffie gedrink nie. Sy was klein en fyn het glo gesukkel met haar maag na die “Ingelse” oorlog. Sy het tee gedrink. Ek het nou nog die klein potjie waarin sy haar tee

Sederdien MOET ek twee, hoogstens drie koppies GOEIE koffie per dag drink. NIE kitskoffie nie, ek proe en ruik die blusmiddel. Beslis ook nie koffie met sigorei nie.

Ek het nou omtrent al by elke koffiewinkel en koffieverspreidingspunt op die dorp koffie gedrink. As ek reg tel, kry ek negentien. Onthou dis Kleinmond alleen. Die meeste van hulle mag maar koffie maak. Regtig. Besef ons hoe gelukkig ons is?

I was busy watching my favourite program on TV when I saw amber flying past my window.

I knew we were in trouble, so I ran to the door and saw flames 3x higher than the roof of our house, on their way to destroy our home. You go numb but only for seconds because you know you have to get out ...

NOW!!! We literally had about 5 minutes to get out. I had myself, my dad of 86, my mom of 82, my nephew Morrison, my chow Angel and three hamsters to get out of there. In my numbness ... I prayed!!! By the Grace of God we got out - unharmed.

In shock, traumatized but unharmed.

That is why I would like to take some time to reflect on the happenings of the 8th of July, a date that we will not soon forget. I would like to thank some people who deserve to be mentioned. First of all I want to thank God our Lord because without His help and guidance many homes would not be standing today. My two hero’s of the night: my husband Pauli, who went into fire fighting mode within a split second; thanks to his training as volunteer fire fighter, and my brother Rudolph who helped us to get out safely ánd then helped Paul steering the fire away from our home. The many fire units arriving in RECORD time and doing an excellent job

as always. How great you all are!!! On a more personal note I would like to thank Zainab and Abdus Salaam of number 3054 Sea View Drive for driving all the way from Cape Town to be with us. Feeding us and offering us your flatlet to stay if needed.

You have NO idea how much that meant to us. To Mujahied, their son, for offering help to rebuild what’s burned down at our place. Thanks. We also would like to thank Paul and Di Perton for always being there for us and now again for your support and help offered. To Ken and the Mynhardts for your assistance, concern and help offered. Elektisiteitsbesparing In ons straat in Klein-Berlyn woon baie vriendelike en behulpsame mense wat by die elektrisiteitsafdeling werk. Onlangs is daar aan ‘n goedwerkende ligpaal ‘n sterk “tronk”lamp aangebring wat dit nou moeilik maak vir die omliggende mense (dier en plante) om hul brood-

nodige nagrus te kry. Selfs ‘n “black-out curtain” is nie genoeg nie. Tronkligte is daar om mense binne te hou. Dalk kan daardie lig aan die huis self aangebring word met ‘n tripswitch. Dit sal waardeer word.

Slapelose omwonendes

Adieu mein kleiner Garde-offizier Op 'n stil Sondagnamiddag, met klavier, melodie en poësie, verdrink ons in die oerklanke van woord en klank. Stef Liebenberg, virtuoos, speel die mooiste musiek. Hy het sy laaste uitvoering op die dorp gelewer. Hiertydens is hy sinvol ondersteun deur Christine Dreyer en Helma Potgieter twee uitstaande vertolkers van die mooiste Afrikaanse poësie.

Hulle voortreflike voordragte het die sinne ewe diep geraak as die klanke van die klavier.

Net soos Melanie Wiles, wat die geleentheid gereël het verlede week geskryf het, het dit my 'n aantal jare geneem om vas te stel dat prof. Liebenberg van beroep eintlik hoogleraar in volksgesondheid aan die toenmalige Universtiteit van die Oranje-Vrystaat was. Toe ek hom sowat sestien jaar gelede ontmoet het, was ek onder die indruk dat hy beroepspianis was.

Beskeidenheid en nederigheid is na my mening een van die mooiste karaktereienskappe wat jy net by werklike groot geeste, soos Stef en Buks, sal vind.

Ek ken min mense wat die begrip van universele menslikheid se omvattende waardesisteme uitleef. Dit sluit in dinge soos respek, welwillendheid, geneëndheid, agting, toleransie, empatie en simpatie, om maar enkeles te noem. Stef en Buks is twee unieke persoonlikhede wat elke element van menslikheid

uitgeleef het, sonder fanfare.

Ek weet van 'n hele paar gevalle waar hulle terminale siek mense tot die einde bygestaan het en daarna omgesien het na die agtergelatenes. Ek weet van gevalle waar hulle, met fisieke moeite, tegniese hulpmiddels soos rolstoele opgelaai en aangery het na mense wat dit nodig gehad het. En so kan ek aangaan.

Die universele gebruik om die “laaste eer” aan 'n peroon te bewys wanneer die persoon nie meer die blomme op die kis kan ruik of selfs die kluite op die deksel kan hoor klap nie, is vir my 'n beklemmende begrip. Dit is 'n daad wat altyd te laat gedoen word. Dit is tog immers beter om eer te bewys telkens wanneer jy van iemand afskeid neem.

Almal wat die Sondagkonsert bygewoon het, het gekom om eer te bewys aan Stef, maar in werklikheid was dit eintlik hy wat sy aanhangers ryklik beloon het met 'n genoeglike uitmuntende konsert, waarin hy sy meesterlike beheer van die klavier met die grootste gemak vir oulaas aan die waarderende gehoor getoon het.

Ons groet hierdie twee unieke mense, wat baie van ons se lewens aansienlik verryk het.

Julle laat 'n baie diep gat wat nooit gevul sal kan word nie.

Reis veilig die toekoms in en leef voluit!

This comes after a recent measles outbreak, between January and March this year, where 29 people in the Province were diagnosed with the virus. The DA says it is vital that all residents understand and appreciate the importance of immunization. Measles, a highly infectious and contagious virus, can be prevented through vaccinations. Stef neem afskeid met klavier-en-poësie KLEINMOND - Ten spyte van die snerpende koue op Sondagmiddag 16 Julie 2017, was die kerksaal in Eerstelaan vol geesdriftige persone wat die afskeidskonsert van Buks en Stef Liebenberg bygewoon het. Die geleentheid is deur die Fynbos dienssentrum gereël.

Kennis van hierdie beoogde funksie is vooraf in ‘n nuusberig in die Overstrand Herald bekend gemaak, waarin ‘n uitnodiging aan belangstellendes gerig is.

Stef Liebenberg is bekend in Kleinmond vir sy besondere talent vir klavierspel wat hy mildelik en onbaatsugtig met die mense in ons dorp deel.

Tesame met sy vrou Buks het hulle die afgelope 15 jaar diep spore in die dorp getrap en is albei geliefde persone in Kleinmond. Stef het byvoorbeeld die musiek-leiding geneem met die interkerklike Passie-en-Kersspele wat ‘n tyd gelede saam met die Maranata Lofdansers aangebied is.

Stef en Buks was ook verantwoordelik vir die dekor van die VLV-konferensies en talle blomme uitstallings. Hulle het ook skouer aan die wiel gesit by menige ander geleenthede vir fondsinsameling in ons gemeenskap.

Stef het sy gunsteling musiek en poësie uitgekies vir die Sondagmiddag konsert en het met die bekende en geliefde “Warsaw Concerto” begin. Die afgelope tien jaar tree Stef op saam met Christine Dreyer en Helma Potgieter.

Hierdie twee talentvolle dames bring nuwe lewe aan geliefde poësie. Die inmekaar vleg van die poësie en musiek het die toehoorders in vervoering gehad.

Die Sonata in C van Mozart, “Rooidag” van N.P. van Wyk Louw (musiek S. Le R. Marais) en Intermezzo van Hamilton Robinson, asook talle ander musiekstukke was deel van sy aanbieding. Die poësie het groot aanklank gevind by die gehoor, soos byvoorbeeld Antjie Krog se “Mirakel” [“Ek behoort aan hierdie land...”].

Nog ‘n gunsteling was die gedig “Ken jy die see....” van Uys Krige.

Philip de Vos se gedig “Salomo

O Salomo” het die gehoor laat uitbars van die lag.

Seën en dank was op almal se lippe en die lied “Laat Heer U seën op hul daal” is spontaan deur die gehoor gesing. Stef het die Here die eer gegee vir hulle geseënde lewe in Kleinmond.

Hy het ook die Here gedank vir Sy guns en genade oor hulle kinders en kleinkinders.

Christine en Helma het afgesluit met woorde uit ‘n gedig deur Breyten Breytenbach: Mag daar altyd ‘n lig brand in jou huis, Mag die paddas u onthou,

Mag u appels aljaar soeter word en u druiweprieël groener, Mag u vriende wyn saambring vir die kuier, Mag die huis wat u gebou het deurtrek bly van die geur van sederhout en malvablare, Mag die walle van u slote nie te gou inkalwe en in hul moer stort nie Sodat die water nog helderder daarin kan vloei.

Gesondheid - Apteker oor regering se gesondheidsplan Ria Burrows KLEINMOND – Kobus le Roux van Kleinmond Apteek het sopas teruggekeer vanaf Johannesburg, waar hy ‘n kongres oor “Aptekerswese in SA” bygewoon het. Daar is veral besin oor die nuwe wetgewing en die regering se witskrif oor gesondheidsorg om universele mediese sorg vir alle Suid Afrikaners te verskaf.

Die afgevaardigdes het gereken dat daar nog baie faktore is wat eers aangespreek en in plek gestel moet word, soos die finansiëringsmodel. Hoe sal dit mediese versekering beïnvloed en die huidige belastingbetaler se sak raak – en kan dit gebeur sonder om die belastingbasis te verbreed? Kobus reken self daar moet nog baie water in die see loop voordat die plan in

2019 geïmplenteer sal word.

Op die kongres is Kobus weereens verkies op die Presidensiële Komitee, asook op die Nasionale Uitvoerende Komitee van die GemeenskapsAptekersvereniging. Hulle doel en fokus is om positiewe insette te lewer om die beroep te verbeter en op alle terreine te bevorder.

Die vereniging het baie internasionale kontakte in die sewe Engelssprekende lande.

Hulle was baie behulpsaam om ‘n goeie en effektiewe model vir SA te skep, sonder om die wiel te herontwerp. Op die kongres was ‘n gasspreker van die Australiese Aptekersgilde, wat die gehoor toegespreek het oor die model wat hulle baie suksesvol in Australie gebruik.

Kobus en sy vrou Ronel is volgende jaar reeds 30 jaar op Kleinmond en baie gelukkig om deel van so ‘n besondere gemeenskap te wees, asook vir al die ondersteuning wat hulle geniet. Ronel het as onderwyseres op Kleinmond begin skoolhou, totdat hulle oudste seun Pieter gebore is.

Later het Ronel Kobus in die apteek begin bystaan en het as Aptekersassistent gekwalifiseer nadat hulle kinders die huis verlaat het. Hulle het twee seuns, Pieter en Hanju, en albei was leerders aan Kleinmond Laerskool en daarna in Overberg Hoërskool. Hulle is nou beide gekwalifiseerde ingenieurs en het goeie betrekkings, iets waaroor Kobus en Ronel baie dankbaar is.

Kobus verklaar dat dit is ‘n voorreg is om in ‘n pragtige dorp met ‘n besondere gemeenskap soos Kleinmond te kan woon, en dan nog ‘n positiewe bydrae tot die gemeenskap se gesondheid te kan lewer!

Agterstallige verslae Munisipale voorskrif bepaal dat alle Wykskomiteelede kwartaalliks ‘n verslag moet inhandig. Nie alle Wykskomitee lede het egter hul verslae vir die afgelope twee kwartale ingehandig nie.

Cobus Conradie, ‘n gebore Vrystater, is daardie man.

Cobus het in DeWetsdorp grootgeword, sy skoolloopbaan aan Grey Kollege in Bloemfontien voltooi en is daarna na die Pretoria Normaalkollege, waar hy hom as onderwyser bekwaam het. Maar onderwys was nie in sy bloed nie, inteendeel, sy naweekbesoeke aan ‘n vriend met ‘n haarkappersalon, het hom meer geboei. Nadat hy ‘n vakleerlingskap in daardie salon,”Planet Waves by Peter”, voltooi het, het hy sy eie salon in Barberton geopen – “Hair Studio”. Hy dink met nostalgie terug aan daardie eerste treë as eienaar van sy eie besigheid en verklaar met ‘n glimlag “Ek het baie geleer”.

Daarna is hy na Pretoria, waar

hy vir George, sy lewensmaat, ontmoet het. George is nie ‘n haarkapper nie, maar geniet die administrasie en finansiële kant van ‘n onderneming.

Amanzimtoti en die seelug se aantrekkingskrag lei na ‘n nuwe onderneming “Hot Gossip”, wat in 2007 asook in 2008 bekroon word met die “Akkolade vir die beste haarsalon in die Suidkus”.

In 2010 verkoop hulle die salon en verhuis na die Wes Kaap, eers na Die Strand, en daarna Kleinmond as die eienaars van ‘n haarsalon. Hulle is vyf jaar gelede in Gordonsbaai getroud.

Vyf hondekinders plus een African Grey papegaai later, is hulle steeds baie gelukkig op Kleinmond.

Cobus se ander passie is blomme en die kunstige rangskikking daarvan. Sy kliënte in Barberton het hom destyds oorreed om op Valentynsdag aan ‘n Miniskou deel te neem – en daar wen hy die eerste prys! Sy haarsalon kliënte het deurentyd daardie talente raakgesien. Hy het bekend geraak en twee jaar gelede

die titel “Ontwerper van die jaar” van die SAFU (South African Floral Union), ingepalm. ‘n Besondere prestasie, aangesien slegs 12 persone genooi word om hieraan deel te neem. By die jaarlikse kongres van SAFU het hy tweede geëindig. Dit het George so geinspireer dat hy sedertdien ook begin rangskik het en reeds in die kategorie vir beginners pryse verower het.

A Xhosa speaking family of Kleinmond United Nations of Hangklip/ Kleinmond se Verenigde Nasies In die upcoming weeks, the Overstrand Herald will be running a series of articles on the variety of residents in our area. As the reporter is a woman, she will be interviewing women from as many cultures and backgrounds as are willing.

We don’t intend to put people on the spot if they perhaps do not have the proper papers to be here. That is not our intention or our job. We want to celebrate the variety and diversity of cultures in Hangklip/ Kleinmond.

According to the 2015 statistics of the Overstrand Municipality, almost 30 % of the residents in the area are Xhosa speaking. A large portion of the residents

of Kleinmond, therefore, can be expected to be Xhosa-speaking.

One of the local Xhosa-speaking residents is Victoria Bhede.

Victoria is the friendly lady who works along with the Rossouw family at the Coffee Shop at the Spar Centre. Carol Dweck recommends we ensure that children know “it is okay and safe to fail, and that taking risks and learning from failure can lead to invention and creativity”, notes Salter, adding that the way we praise our children also plays an important role.

“Dweck advised that, rather than using general praise, for instance saying ‘you can do it because you are so smart’, parents and teachers should praise specific efforts that lead to improvements

Growth mindset: 3 steps to help your child grow from failure In today’s competitive environment, where some toddlers attend maths development classes and other youngsters are pushed to start reading fluently before they enter Grade 1, parents can be forgiven for being concerned about the future of their children who show signs of struggling academically or otherwise.

But one of South Africa’s leading education experts says that the situation can and must be turned around before it spirals out of control and negatively impacts – unnecessarily so – on a child’s entire sense of self and selfesteem. The way to do this is to cultivate a “growth mindset”, she says.

“Children who think their intelligence and ability is ‘fixed’ that they are stuck at a certain level of smarts -- tend to do less well than those who think that they can, with perseverance, achieve at anything they set their minds to,” says Traci Salter*, Strategic Academic Development Advisor at ADvTECH, Africa’s largest private education provider.

“However learners who understand that their intelligence or skill level can be improved by effort and experimentation seek more challenges, learn from mistakes and don’t give up in the face of failure,” she says.

The concept of the Growth Mindset was pioneered by Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, and draws on neuroscience showing that a

such as focus, persistence and work habits. For instance, one could say ‘you’re doing a great job organising your science fair experiment. It will give you plenty of time to practise presenting.’

“This takes the spotlight off fixed ability and puts it in the process of learning and developing.”

Following Dweck’s strategies, Salter says there are 3 steps parents can take to help their children develop a growth mindset: 1)HAVE DAILY LEARNING DISCUSSIONS At dinner, in the car or at bedtime take time for both children and parents to share the answers to these types of questions: “What did you learn today?”

(Instead of “How was your day?”)

“What mistake did you make that taught you something today?”

“What did you try that you found hard today?”

It is important for parents and guardians to share their learning as well, because it models to children that even grownups learn new things every day, and learn from failures.

2)GIVE FEEDBACK ON PROCESS ONLY Praise effort by children - for instance persistence, thinking of alternate strategies, seeking new opportunities, setting ongoing goals, planning for achieving these, and considering creative alternates to the challenge at

hand.

Don’t praise personal abilities like being smart, pretty, or artistic.

This kind of praise could actually lead to a loss of confidence since children won’t be smart at everything. They’ll doubt their ability to master something that is difficult initially.

3)ENCOURAGE RISK, FAILING AND LEARNING FROM MISTAKES Failure teaches our children important life lessons. For one, it’s how they learn resilience, perseverance and self-motivation.

Now is the time to let our children risk and fail. But we often want to prevent our children from failing, from feeling upset or sad. Don’t.

“We must let our children experience some failures while they are young, so that they can strengthen their growth mindset muscles. If we don’t, they will become adults with no perseverance, or belief in their abilities to work hard and succeed,” says Salter.

“When the going gets tough, and challenges feel extra challenging, we should help our children celebrate the fact that they are learning and building mental muscle. Tell them about all the famous people who failed and didn’t give up, like Albert Einstein, Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey, and remind them that every challenge provides an opportunity to become more empowered.”

Rita het grootgeword tussen die groenteplase op die Kaapse vlakte, en sien haarself steeds as ‘n Kapenaar, ten spyte van haar 25 jaar in die ‘ou Transvaal’, soos sy Gauteng noem. Sy het haar man, Hubert, in hulle jeugjare op die Kaapse vlakte ontmoet.

Hy het by haar ‘n fiets kom leen vir sy vriendin, vertel sy, en voeg dan met ‘n knipoog by: “En die res is geskiedenis”! Hulle was onafskeidbaar - verlief, verloof, getroud – en dit geld nog steeds na 52 jaar! Hulle het later Noorde toe beweeg en in Pretoria gewoon nadat Hubert verplaas is na die Reserwebank se Hoofkantoor. Hulle het steeds vakansies in die Overberg kom geniet en later ‘n strandhuis in Bettysbaai gebou. In 1992 het hulle finaal teruggekeer en woon sedertdien op Kleinmond.

Die see hou vir hulle albei ‘n groot bekoring in, maar hulle bly ook terdeë bewus van die gevare en onvoorspelbaarheid van die branders. ‘Wat het julle die meeste gemis toe julle in die Noorde gewoon het, en ook toe julle weer teruggekom het hierheen’, wou ons weet.

Sy antwoord dadelik: “Daar het ons die vriende en familie gemis, en hier het ons die lekker weer gemis!”

First, every poem which is approved by the relevant editor will feature alongside other poems on the AVBOB poetry website, where it will become part of a library of content to provide words of beauty and comfort to the people of South Africa. As a token of our appreciation, an incentive of R300 will be paid for each poem selected.

In addition, all entrants of approved poems will be in line for the AVBOB Poetry Prize, in the specific language categories (there will be a winner in each language). The respective prizes will bring cash rewards.

Ref sny wedstryd met 8 min Konsternasie het verlede naweek weer op ons rugbyveld uitgebreek, toe die skeidsregter die wedstryd tussen Kleinmond A en Universals van Stanford na bewering met agt minute verkort het. Dit is dieselfde skeidsregter wat met ‘n vorige wedstryd tussen Kleinmond en ‘n ander span toeskouers baie ongelukkig gehad het met sy beslissings. Buiten die skeidsregter het die weer ook nie saamgespeel nie. Kleinmond se A-span het die eerste helfte teen die wind gespeel. Dit was ‘n moeilike eerste helfte maar met Kleinmond se sterk aanval

en verdediging eindig die spanne gelykop met 10 elk.

Die tweede helfte was ‘n ander storie. Stanford het `n drie gedruk en ‘n strafskop oorgeklits om hul telling na 18 toe te lig. Kleinmond het hierna ook ‘n drie gedruk en verdoel om die puntebord op 18 – 17 te staan te bring. Die wedstryd het ongelukkig vroeg geëindig as gevolg van die skeidsregter se beslissing, omdat dit glo te donker geraak het.

Kleinmond se tweede span het beter gevaar en hulle wedstryd met 29 – 5 gewen.

Die man van die wedstryd vir die 2de span, Maphelo Mankule, ontvang sy trofee van Sherwin Ressouw.

Fernando Swartz ontvang sy speler van die wedstryd trofee. Dit is oorhandig deur William Volkwyn van Volkwyn Bouers wat die trofeë en prysgeld geborg het.
