SPAR and workers reach agreement KLEINMOND - The local Kleinmond SuperSpar and members of the Food and Allied Workers Union have reached a wage agreement after a four day strike by FAWU (Food and Allied Workers Union) members. The trade union members embarked on legal strike on Friday morning demanding a 12% wage increase. They had earlier rejected an above inflation increase by management. On Monday afternoon the parties did however come to an agreement on a new package and by Wednesday morning the strikers were back at work. The strike, though loud and noisy at times, went off largely peacefully, except for an incident on Monday morning when the strikers allegedly tried to prevent other employees from going to work.

KLEINMOND – Met die groot reën voor het baie Kleinmonders Saterdag asem opgehou om te kyk of die strandmeer nie dalk gaan oopspoel nie. Die groot reën het toe wel opgedaag en sommer ‘n klomp mense het laat weet. Santie Pienaar het 39mm in Bettysbaai gemeet en Paul van der Westhuizen (Sunny Seas) 64mm. Patricia van Driessche van Palmietweg het laat weet dat hulle 60mm gehad het en Charl Viljoen in die Berglane het 50mm gemeet. Die Herald se mense was oortuig dat die baie water die ding gaan doen en toe besluit om ‘n waag en wen kompetisie op facebook te loods. Duisende mense het kom kyk en oor die 220 mense het ‘n raaiskoot gewaag. Verreweg die meerderheid het gestem dat die strandmeer wel gaan oopspoel. Dit het egter nie gebeur nie en die nee’s was die oorwinnaars op die dag. Die wenner van ons kompetisie is Merwe Krige. Kleinmond’s lesson for Government Gerard Grobler KLEINMOND – While the ANC Government is talking nineteen to the dozen about land expropriation and providing land to the urban homeless, they might care to pause a minute and take a page from Kleinmond’s book. In May of this year the Overstrand Municipality took a sudden and unexpected decision to make additional land available in Over Hills for so-called emergency housing. They hurriedly met with the Over Hills Committee where an agreement was reached: On 31 May this year the Herald reported as follows: “In a press release issued on Tuesday afternoon the move was somewhat confusingly described by the Municipality as a breakthrough. At the Kleinmond Community Forum (KCF) meeting on Tuesday evening DA councillor for Ward 10, Fanie Krige, described the agreement as a milestone. In the press release the Municipality went to great pains to explain that the agreement was made with community leaders representing Over Hills, Proteadorp, Poppedorp and Riemvasmaak. In fact the only people present were the Over Hills committee, some of whose members come from these communities. Described by the municipality as temporary, seeing that the current land investigation in Kleinmond is ongoing, the agreement comes with a number of conditions: 1. Structures outside of the designated area be relocated within an agreed time (4 June) to within that area and that community leaders must agree upon ensuring that no new structures will be erected outside the designated area. 2. Only people who are registered on the housing waiting list as verified by Province and the Municipality, will be allowed to erect structures. No-one who has already been a housing beneficiary will be allowed to erect a temporary structure. The affected families will also be vetted against the subsidy database to determine if they have benefitted before. 3. All structures will be numbered in accordance with the Municipality’s system. According to the press release, the Overhills representatives, after a caucus, agreed to the
proposal, and offered to institute the following measures: - They will ensure that those people guilty of “shack farming” will scale these structures down and will prevent people with sizeable properties from being guilty of “shack farming” in future. (Ed: Shack farming is where somebody either adds several rooms to an existing shack and rent them or has more than one shack) - No-one will be allowed to hold and let more than one structure. - This will be done with the support of the community leaders and will follow a stepby-step process - Anyone in need of a garage shed will have to submit the necessary application in future. - That in the process
of relocating/re-organising, informal households will each maintain a one meter building line around his/her informal unit for various safety reasons. In other words there must be an open space of at least two meters between any two adjacent shacks for the provision of emergency services. - A special attempt will be made to house Proteadorp’s people, where several people are living in Wendy houses in their parents’ backyards. (Ed: We understand some 30 stands are to made available to them) - It was also agreed that it is important for the informal settlement communities of Overhills and Proteadorp to take joint responsibility with community leaders and the Municipality.” Fast forward to end of August 2018 and the situation is as
follows. There now stand a total of 214 new shacks, with more apparently going up by the day. The Municipality has recently finished a verification process to determine who the occupants of the new shacks are. Their data provides an interesting picture of what is probably going to happen if Government doesn’t do some very careful planning before they make announcements on making large tracts of public land available for housing. Of the 214 new shack owners only 16 are registered and on the waiting list. A further 16 have issues. Five already have homes elsewhere. Another six already have shacks elsewhere in Over Hills and five could not produce ID’s. That means the majority of new shack owners, a total of 182, are not on any Continued on page.6

The Municipality’s plans for properly dividing the land into plots and provide for streets and services have gone for a loop. Residents say they don’t want streets, they want more space for shacks. As you can see on the aerial map the development has been haphazard. The Municipality has subsequently drawn a boundary within which the buildings are supposed to remain. This was only done much later and is consequently one of the major problems. Nobody seemed to know where the boundary was. Now that there is certainty, at least 16 new dwellings are apparently outside the boundary. This leaves the Municipality with several headaches. Number one is to get all the buildings within the boundary and to stop the building of more shacks which have been steadily creeping up the mountain. It can happen in one of two ways. The Committee roll up their sleeves and get the people outside the boundary to move or the Red Ants are called in. Those are the options. Number two is explaining to the people on the waiting list, some of whom have been waiting for years, why land was given to people who are not on the list. It basically makes a mockery of the waiting list strategy which has been the backbone of municipal housing strategy for years. Ed: What follows is pure speculation: The question that

Bladsy 6 keeps nagging me is whether this is part of the land use strategy the Municipality’s consultants are currently working on? If indeed it is and was done on the recommendation of the consultants (and I am theorizing here) then there are certain conclusions one can make: One of them is that Over Hills is here to stay. It will in all probability not be replaced by some sort of formalized housing as many of us had hoped. If this is the case then it means that the consultants will have to find another section of land to develop. There are currently only two pieces of land available. They are the one adjacent to Palmiet (nature reserve) and the section of land above Thirteenth and Fifteenth Avenues. Those are the only options I can see (besides buying additional land). This is pure speculation of course. The theory does however have a certain logic about it. In one fell swoop you have taken care of most of the housing needs in Over Hills and now only have to focus on those people on the waiting list, the majority of them probably Proteadorpers, which if you are DA, is your political support base. Whatever happens, there is a lesson for National Government in the Kleinmond experience. First do you planning right down to who gets what plot and only then do you announce your intentions or else you are going to have a land rush which you probably won’t be able to control.

Nog ‘n koppie? Nou paai, nou paai! Gesinne en families het mos maar hul eie sêgoed. By ons het verskeie hul ontstaan by my pa gehad. Een van hulle was, wanneer hy ons kinders gegroet wanneer het wanneer hy werk toe gaan of ons vir ‘n rukkie alleen gelaat het, het hy gesê: “play nice, don’t fight!”. Dis iets wat hy iewers by ‘n immigrante vriend gehoor het. Uiteraard het dit ‘n sêding geword en ek gebruik dit dikwels. Jana, ons dogter wat gestrem is, geniet dit baie. Wanneer iemand loop, sê sy: “Nou paai! Nou paai!” en sy kry lekker tot in haar tone toe oor die grappie wat sy maak. Nou wens ek tog so, dat mense, veral in ons land, kan begin om so te lewe. Sonder ‘n gepieker en ‘n gemor en ‘n gekla en ‘n gemoddergooiery. Wanneer die onaangenaamheid lelik verkeerd loop, het die een wat die hele ou gewalt begin het, sag heengegaan, want skielik is almal die ene lig en liefde.

Community rallies after fire KLEINMOND - A devastating fire in Over Hills on Saturday left about 40 people homeless and the response of the larger community to the tragedy has been incredible, DA councillor Grant Cohen said on Tuesday. Cohen and the Municipal Area Manager, Desmond Lakey, were on the scene early on Sunday morning and immediately had a needs assessment done. The Herald and local facebook group Kleinmond Kwessies soon afterwards appealed for help from the community. Cohen said following this food,
blankets, clothing and even toys just streamed in. “We soon had almost everything we had asked for. In fact we had such a wonderful response that we have been able to store some of the surplus for the next emergency. I want to thank everybody that reached out, it has been unbelievable,” he said. Dadelik het Nienie Burger en Ninnie du Toit saamgesels en besluit om saam met hulle onderskeie vrywilligers, tuisgemaakte brood en basaarpoeding ook beskikbaar te stel. ‘n Gesellige oggend waar elkeen sy eie wyn kan saambring, kuier en die snoek geniet, word beplan. Kaartjies hiervoor vir beskikbaar by Albertyn Apteek of die NG Kerkkantoor in Vierdelaan. Die koste van die snoekbraai is R60 en apart daarvan sal die poeding teen R10 verkoop word. Dink maar eers goed na KLEINMOND – Daar is tans ‘n swetterjoel maatskappye wat internet advertensies aan plaaslike besighede probeer verkoop. Daar is veral een wat baie aktief in ons omgewing is. Hul bemark hul besigheid as ‘n “amptelike” webtuiste vir die dorp. Dis volgens hulle ‘n wen-wen situasie want die dorp word bemark en plaaslike besighede kry blootstelling. Nou dit is deels waar. Die dorp kry blootstelling. Die probleem is dit word gedoen deur ‘n maatskappy wat in Gansbaai sit. Is dit hoegenaamd ‘n gesonde beginsel dat jou dorp se “amptelike” webtuiste uit ‘n ander dorp bedryf word? Wat hulle jou ook nie vertel nie, is dat die ander dorpe in die Overberg wat hulle bedien se besighede nou ook as deel van hul produk op Kleinmond, in jou mark, gaan adverteer. Dit beteken dat ‘n loodgieter of rekenmeester op, gestel nou maar Hermanus, nou ook op Kleinmond se sg. “amptelike” webtuiste gaan adverteer en dus direk met jou gaan kompeteer. Hulle se ook nie vir jou dat hulle geen mense in diens het op Kleinmond of van plan is om iemand aan te stel nie. Jou advertensiegeld gaan dus reguit na ‘n ander dorp, in die geval Gansbaai, waar die kantoor van die maatskappy is. Jy skep dus werk in Gansbaai. Kom ons neem die Herald as voorbeeld. Die koerant verskaf tans drie voltydse werkgeleenthede en 9 deeltydse werkgeleenthede. Die geld wat hier genereer word, word hier spandeer, by plaaslike ondernemings. Verkope van die Herald het die afgelope jaar, in ag genome digitale verkope en inskrywings, met 8% gegroei. Tans bereik die koerant elke week nagenoeg die helfte van die bevolking van ons vier dorpies. Weinig ander koerante op enige dorp en beslis geen webtuiste kan hierop aanspraak maak nie.Dieselfde internetmaatskappy sê vir jou daar is geen ander plek om te wees as op sy webtuiste nie. Almal is deesdae op die internet. Wel, beslis nie in Kleinmond se geval nie. ‘n Onlangse opname wat met die oog op die Spesiale Aanslaggebied gedoen is, het getoon dat verreweg die meerderheid van belastingbetalers op Kleinmond ouer mense is, wat nie noodwendig die internet of sosiale media gebruik nie. Dieselfde maatskappy is al meer as ‘n jaar doenig op Kleinmond. Vra jouself die vraag af – hoeveel keer was jy die afgelope jaar op daardie webtuiste? As jy ‘n toerisme besigheid bedryf en mense van elders hierheen wil lok, maak dit miskien sin, maar ander ondernemings wat plaaslike inwoners wil bereik, moet maar eers goed nadink.

Residents concerned about Clarence Drive speeding Ilna Grobler Last week two fairly serious accidents occurred on the R44 in Betty’s Bay. Though speed was not a contributing factor in either, residents are concerned about motorists speeding. In the collision on Thursday morning, a lady from Betty’s Bay was returning home from her teaching post in Hermanus. Apparently she had been given leave to go home, as she was not feeling well. A golden VW beetle was parked in front of The Best Place in Town Restaurant. According to eye-witnesses the white Volvo crashed into the Beetle which sent it tumbling into a ditch beside the road. Fortunately the Volvo was not travelling at a high speed. The emergency services arrived and took the lady to hospital for a check-up, but she was released later on Thursday. An eye-witness said that even while the emergency services were busy with their patient, there were vehicles racing by at high speed. On Saturday Mr Wynand Kleijnhans was involved in an accident when the Mercedes in which he was travelling left the road on Clarence Drive just after Jack’s and landed among a clump of trees. Ms Anita van Schaik, Kleijnhans’s friend, who was travelling in a vehicle behind him, said thankfully the driver of a car travelling from the direction of Kleinmond, could swerve out of the way of the Mercedes. If she had not done so, there may have been a head-on collision. Apparently Kleijnhans suffered a minor stroke. He was taken to Hermanus Medi-Clinic where he was kept in ICU. By Tuesday he was still in hospital, but in a general ward.

Bloubakkie se laaste Saterdag in hulle huidige winkelopset het aangebreek – die groot verskuiwing na hulle nuwe en baie ruimer winkel vind gedurende die komende week plaas. Op die foto bedien Johan een van die laaste Saterdagoggendkliënte in die huidige winkel, terwyl die oorblywende kliënte en personeellede glimlaggend toekyk – of eintlik die laaste “kastimers”, soos hy elke inkommer gemoedelik groet! Kleinmond wag ongeduldig om die splinternuwe winkelruimte met al sy geriewe, te betree.
‘n VLVK-kongres vol pitkos oor aktuele kwessies “Pitkos oor aktuele sake” was die ervaring van Cecile Jonkheid, voorsitter van die VLV-tak op Kleinmond en Hermien van Zyl toe hulle vanaf 22 – 24 Augustus saam met nog 15 VLV-lede uit sirkel Overberg, die jaarkongres van die Vrouelandbouvereniging van Kaapland by Goudini Spa bygewoon het. Die +300 afgevaardigdes en waarnemers kon luister na landbouleiers soos Johannes Möller, uitgetrede president van Agri SA en Cornie Swart, president van Agri-WesKaap, en beide het die kongresgangers verseker dat daar nie grondgrype gaan wees nie en dat eiendomsreg eerbiedig sal word. In aansluiting by Kongres 2018 se tema “Laat ‘n Voetspoor”, het beide hierdie sprekers gewys op die bydrae wat boere in SuidAfrika gemaak het, dat geen dekade sedert Uniewording sonder uitdagings was nie en dat die landbougemeenskap ook nie nou gaan wegskram van uitdagings nie. Daar word bondgenootskappe oor kleurgrense heen gesmee, ‘n finansieringsmodel gaan uit kommersiële boere kom om nuwe boere op te lei en daar sal gesorg word vir voedselsekerheid te midde van
droogtes, waterkrisisse, ens. Vroue moet nooit vergeet dat hulle een van die pilare is wat landbou onderskraag nie. VLVK het ‘n oorkonde aan Johannes Möller oorhandig vir sy bydrae tot georganiseerde landbou. Ander interessante sprekers was Romanda Viljoen, onderwyseres by Worcester Gimnasium wat verduidelik het hoe werk e-leer waar handboeke toenemend deur tegnologie vervang word, Francois Grobbelaar wat die verwoestende effek van FAS uitgewys het en Alida Jones wat met die “Drive More Safely”-padveiligheidsprojek iets probeer doen aan die skokkende sterftesyfer op ons paaie. Johané Nielsen, kosredakteur van die Tuistydskrif het haar nuwe kosboek, TA-DA! kom bekendstel en gasspreker ds. Fanie Kriel het perspektief gegee op ‘n veranderende wêreld. Die seremonie waartydens ‘n liggie aangesteek word en die Internasionale Gebed voorgelees word om VLV in gedagte te verbind met die 9 miljoen medelede van die Wêreldbond van Plattelandse Vroue, is deur Hermien van Zyl, die vorige sirkelpresident van Overberg, waargeneem.

The ANC seems to need a white enemy and now they have found one Let me start by declaring that I am not a member of AfriForum and have never been. Lately the ANC, some media houses and even political commentators have, in the wake of the land expropriation debate, been building a dangerous narrative that there is a so-called “white supremist” or “ultra-conservative” right wing grouping fighting transformation and social justice in South Africa. In the absence of any real evidence of this they have chosen to point to AfriForum as the main proponent of this “white supremist” thinking. Why are the ANC doing this? Well, my theory is that just like some political parties in the past chose to make use of the “swart gevaar” to get votes, the ANC also needs a focal point for black people’s anger (mainly to divert attention from the ANC’s pathetic attempt at governing our country) – in other words, they need a “wit gevaar” – and AfriForum fits the bill nicely. They have been a thorn in the government’s side for years now. On the legal front they have frankly embarrassed the government in several instances. Their recent mission to the United States to inform policymakers there of the ANC’s plans to expropriate white owned farms was the final straw. The ANC has made this out to be nothing short of treason. The narrative is that by having gone to the US, AfriForum is sabotaging the country and standing in the way of social justice being implemented, and we all know that the more you say something, the more people tend to believe it. The ANC has been so successful in pushing this narrative that even some of my so-called friends on social media (mostly professionals, which I would have thought had more sense) have been asking questions like: “Why can’t AfriForum just leave it alone, can’t they see that they are putting all of us in jeopardy?” What utter nonsense! For almost three decades now, Afrikaners and other white South Africans have for the most part placidly accepted their new, diminished role in society. The ruling party has implemented social engineering on a scale that makes Apartheid pale by comparison (no pun intended). Almost 25 years
after Apartheid has ended all white South Africans are still being persecuted for the sins of the National Party, the English and the Dutch. We’re excluded from jobs in the civil service, most provincial and local governments and even the private sector through openly discriminatory legislation and quotas, solely because of the colour of our skin. This has led to most of our highly qualified and talented young people leaving for overseas. This legal discrimination extends to virtually every level of society, whether it be schools, universities and even sports. We are forced to give away a percentage of our businesses in order to do business and get penalized because we are white. We are, off course, expected to pay for everything while we are being demonized and discriminated against. When is it going to end? Most white South Africans accept that there had be some sort of redress, that there has to be reform in terms of land and the economy, but surely it has to come to an end at some stage? When is the ANC going to realize that the only way we are going to make this country grow and work is by joining hands and working together as South Africans? This could unlock huge potential as is being demonstrated at the moment with farmers working together with government to find a solution for land reform. The same goes for the ANC’s National Health Insurance plan. Rather than force it on the country, ask the private sector to take charge and make the plan work – the alternative is a disaster. More than anything we need jobs and for that to happen we need economic growth. This won’t happen while the ANC and its EFF think tank keep on creating even more insecurity. Back to AfriForum. South Africa is a constitutional democracy.

I’ve never heard or seen an AfriForum representative inciting people to revolt, commit violence or break the law. Now, the EFF’s Mr Julius Malema has done all these things, but draws hardly a whimper from his ANC comrades. Remember his “We will cut the throat of whiteness’ and “We Have Not Called For The Killing Of White People... At Least For Now’? AfriForum has a democratic right to promote their message here and overseas, even though I don’t necessarily agree with that message. That is what democracy is all about. I suppose one can rightly ask if the ANC’s stance on expropriation would have changed in recent weeks had it not been for this pressure or the threat of some sort of
punitive action from overseas. I think AfriForum and other organisations like the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) have done our country a service by putting the international spotlight on yet another ruinous policy of the ANC. Besides, I know a white supremist when I see one. I covered countless AWB meetings in the 1980’s and 90”s and did at least three face to face interviews with the late Eugene Terre’Blanche. I also had dealings with various other, even more radical right wing splinter groups during my days as a journalist in Pretoria in the 80’s and believe me, AfriForum is not white supremist. Mariasbaai se perde ’n Allegorie vir ons tyd
Hoofstuk 34 Wat vooraf gebeur het: Diana, kunstenaar, vlug na Mariasbaai om vrede te vind nadat sy Vigs opgedoen het. Daar is oënskynlik mense wat, tot die ontsteltenis van die klinieksusters, genees is van verskillende siektes in die dorpie deur Jos. Die verpleegkundiges is Dienie, die vrou van Attie wat ook die pa is van Evie se seuntjie Aylwin, en Amelia wat Evie se suster is. Die skool voer ‘n Kersspel op waarin Sue en Aylwin hoofrolle sing en die hele dorp is daar om die opvoering mee te maak. Die Kersspel is ‘n groot 1 June—31 Aug 2017sukses. Sport wen op interskole dag Die jaarlikse interskole teen Curro Privaatskool in Sandbaai is vroeg Saterdagoggend uitgestel weens die gure weer. Rugby-en netbalwedstryde het Dinsdagmiddag vanaf 13:00 in ‘n baie goeie gees plaasgevind en al die spelers het hul harte uitgespeel. Beide skole het wedstryde gewen en verloor. Elke span se uitslae het getel en ‘n pragtige trofee is aan die twee skoolhoofde oorhandig, want dit was ‘n gelykop eindtelling. (Laerskool Kleinmond se hoof, Mnr.
