What to know about our upcoming election

TheCityofPleasantHillisenteringintoitsfirstelectionseason,sincetransitioninglastsummerfromanAt-Largetoa District-Basedelectionsystem.Forresidentsandpotentialcandidates,theCityhasinformationtohelplearnhowtofindyour district,andwhattheprocessisheadingintotheNovember5, 2024GeneralElection.

District-Basedelections

AtitsJuly17,2023meeting,thePleasantHillCityCouncil approvedOrdinanceNo.963transitioningtheCitytoa District-Based electionsystem.Amapofthefivedistrictsistothe right.ResidentswillcontinuetoelectfiveCityCouncilmembers tofour-yearterms,however,aspartofthetransitiontothe newsystem,threeofthefiveelectoraldistrictswillbeupfor electiononNovember5,2024,withtheremainingtwodistricts upforelectioninNovember2026.

FortheNovember5,2024,GeneralElection,PleasantHill voterswhoresideinDistrictsOne,Two,andFivewillelectaCity Councilmembertotheirdistrict.ADistrict-BasedCouncilprovidestheopportunityforgreaterawarenessofthepositive qualitiesandchallengeswithinthedistrictandgivesresidents amorelocalizedpointofcontact.TheCouncilwillcontinueto conveneasonedecision-makingbodythatservesallofPleasantHill.

ViceMayorSueNoack(DistrictFour)andCouncilmember ZacShess(DistrictThree),whowereelectedin2022throughan at-largeelection,willremaininofficethroughNovember2026, whentheirtermsconclude.AlleligibleresidentsofDistricts ThreeandFour,includingthecurrentat-largecouncilmembers, mayrunforCityCouncilin2026.

Taylor Boulevard/Civic Drive intersection improvements

DuringMayandJune2024,contractorshavebeenputtingthefinishing touchesontheTaylorBoulevard/Civic DriveIntersectionImprovementProject. Oneofthefinalstepsoftheprojectwas energizingthetrafficsignalattheintersectionofTaylorandCivic.Finalstripingof thatsectionofroadtookplaceinJune. Theprojectmakesiteasierforvisitors toreachthePleasantHillPoliceDepart-

ment,CommunityCenter,theYMCA, schoolsandbusinessesbycar,bike, andonfoot.

Thetrafficsignalincludesbetter detectionforallmodesoftravel, automatedno-rightturnsigns designedtohelpprotectpedestrians, andLeadingPedestrianIntervals (LPI)thatgivepedestriansahead startbeforereleasingvehicletraffic. Alongwiththetrafficsignal,new sidewalkswereinstalledonthenorth sideofTaylorBoulevardbetween CivicDriveandRuthDriveandon bothsidesofCivicDrive.

Theprojectwasfundedthrough MeasureK,TrafficMitigationFund, andtwoTransportationDevelopmentAct(TDA)grants.

Thisyear,ourcommunityjoinsthe nationincelebratingtheanniversaryof theAmericanswithDisabilitiesAct(ADA). SignedintolawonJuly26,1990,byPresidentGeorgeH.W.Bush,theADA representsapivotalmomentinthefight forcivilrightsandequalopportunityfor peoplewithdisabilities.TheActwas groundbreaking,addressingdiscriminationinmultiplefacetsofpubliclife, includingemployment,transportation, publicaccommodations,communications,andaccesstostateandlocal governmentprograms.

TheADA’simpactonAmericancommunityhasbeenprofound.Ithaspaved thewayformoreinclusivepublicspaces, ensuringthatpeoplewithdisabilitiescan navigateandenjoyourcommunitywith greaterease.Curbcuts(gradedportions ofsidewalksatcorners),accessiblepublic transportation,andrampsinpublicbuildingsarenowcommonplace,thankstothe standardssetbytheADA.Thesemodificationshavebenefitednotonlythosewith disabilities,butalsoparentswithstrollers, theelderly,andanyonewhomightfind stairsortraditionalpathwayschallenging. Employmentopportunitieshavealso expandedundertheADA,whichmandatesreasonableaccommodationsfor employeeswithdisabilities.Thishas enabledtalentedindividualstocontributetoourworkforce,enrichingour communitywithdiverseskillsand perspectives.
