Meet Scott and Nikole Tatum, a dynamic couple who proudly call Gatesville their home. With five beautiful children –four daughters and one son, spanning ages 4 to 21 – they've built a loving family at the heart of their beloved town.

Following in his father's footsteps and having been involved in the construction business from an early age, Scott's expertise and passion for working with wood led him to specialize in flooring. Over 20 years ago, he found his niche in flooring and decided to venture into self-employment, establishing Hometown Floors in 2013. With the store's inception in 2019, Scott takes pleasure in assisting customers through every step of their flooring projects, from selecting their favorite materials to the final installation. His commitment extends beyond business, as he enjoys actively engaging with the community and providing support to others in any way he can.

Nikole has dedicated her career to nursing and has been an invaluable part of a local long-term care facility for over 25 years. Throughout her career, she has taken on various roles, from charge nurse to administrative nurse, and finds fulfillment in not only caring for her patients but also offering support to their families.

Their combined passion for their hometown and their desire to support the community led them to take an interest in the property known as 1854. Envisioning a mercantile store that would showcase a diverse range of products from local vendors, they were captivated by the idea of owning such a shop in their beloved hometown. The name "1854" holds special significance as it commemorates the founding year of Coryell county. At 1854, they aim not only to celebrate the essence of Gatesville and Coryell County but also the great state of Texas. Their shared excitement reaches its peak during football season, as they rally behind their beloved Gatesville Hornets.

The mission of 1854 is to provide a one-of-a-kind shopping experience by offering eclectic and high-quality items, backed by excellent customer service and reasonable prices. A visit to the store is always a delightful surprise, with a diverse range of products including clothing, handmade soaps, artesian olive oils, and much more, catering to a wide audience. Supporting the local community is at the heart of their enterprise, and they actively involve themselves in various ways to strengthen and uplift their hometown.

As 1854 continues to flourish, Scott and Nikole have grand aspirations for its growth. They plan to expand the store's offerings, incorporating an even wider selection of items and working with more local vendors. Furthermore, their vision includes hosting numerous community events, inviting everyone to partake in the joyous atmosphere they've created. Their belief is that investing in the local community benefits everyone involved. To spread the charm of their little town even further, they are diligently working on creating a website that reaches not just surrounding communities but also beyond, welcoming all who wish to experience the beauty of Gatesville.

A significant contributor to their success is the exceptional marketing director, Susie Meelbusch, who plays a vital role in promoting the store's offerings and events. In addition to Susie, the store boasts a wonderful lineup of vendors: Lisa Barnard with Lawsons, Rena Mitchell with Gypsy Rooster, Stephanie Sohns with Country Crafts with Love, Chelsea Shults with Prickly Diamond Designs, Sissy Leonard with Chic Tees, Clifton Clary with Clary Customs, Tracy Haferkamp with Faith Alone, and Bryna Dixon with Design By Bryn. The store also takes pride in its own selection of products, including Case brand Knives, Bruemate drinkware and coolers, an extensive array of clothing

and apparel, and locally made items and food. To showcase the community's spirit, they always feature local models and actively promote local events and businesses, as they firmly believe in the idea of reaping what they sow into their beloved community.

Scott has recently partnered with Tracy Haferkamp and Jacob Woods to bring Gatesville and the surrounding areas J&S Pump and Well Service, LLC. With their expertise spanning all aspects of well and drilling services, you can trust them to handle your projects with utmost skill and knowledge. When it comes

to ensuring the longevity of your well, they understand that two primary factors play a crucial role: being experts in the field and prioritizing high-quality construction, coupled with regular maintenance. Their professionals are committed to safeguarding the health and efficiency of your well for the long haul.

The Tatum family's connection to Gatesville runs deep, as they were both born and raised in this charming Texas town. Their contribution through Hometown Floors and 1854 reflects their genuine love for the community and their desire to support it in every possible way.

Take a stroll down your grocery store’s pharmaceutical aisle and you’re sure to see them. Hundreds of bottles of dietary supplements—vitamins, minerals, herbs and amino acids— line the shelves at most grocery stores, convenience stores and even online storefronts, and they’re there for good reason. Americans spent almost $50 billion on dietary supplements in 2021! For those suffering from knee aches and pains, many vitamin brands use ingredients like Glucosamine and claim their supplements improve bone or joint health and can help reduce discomfort. But before you add supplements like vitamins to your own cart for knee pain, it’s important to know if they actually reduce knee pain.

Many people claim dietary supplements can help strengthen bones, joints or muscles. A lack of strength in these parts of the body often contributes to common knee problems you might suffer from.

According to Dr. Lance Ellis, a board certified orthopedic surgeon at Coryell Health who works with patients suffering from joint pain, the most common knee issues he sees can range from “osteoarthritis to meniscus cartilage injuries to knee sprains and more serious fractures, depending on the patient’s age and the casuse of the issue.”

Based on his experience treating patients, Dr. Ellis knows that joint health vitamins including vitamin D, C and E are popular supplements. The question is, do they actually help with common knee problems? Dr. Ellis explained that they can.

“They’re essential for maintaining strong bones and health joints, and the anti-inflammatory properties of these vitamins can help prevent joint damage,” said Dr. Ellis.

There are a couple of lesser-known vitamins that Dr. Ellis often recommends to patients with joint pain and osteoarthritis: glucosamine and chondroitin. Both supplements have been shown to reduce inflammation, promote cartilage growth and improve joint

function, making them a valuable addition to any joint health regimen.

Naturally occurring vitamins help your body promote healthy bones and bone density, but supplements are not the end-all-be-all of staying healthy. If you’re looking to prevent knee problems or manage your pain at home, here’s what Dr. Ellis suggests:

“Maintain a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise to promote overall joint health and a healthy weight. Low-impact exercises such as swimming, yoga and cycling can be particularly beneficial for those looking to protect their knees from injury.”

While surgery may be necessary in some cases, there are a few athome remedies that might be effective in helping you manage pain, including exercises that strengthen the muscles around the knee, hot and cold therapy and over-the-counter pain relievers.

What Are Vitamins?

Vitamins are nutrients the human body needs to function healthily. Your body only needs small amounts of vitamins and minerals, and most people obtain all their vitamins from their day-to-day diet if they’re consuming balanced meals. Some people might have vitamin deficiencies or aren’t meeting their body’s needs through their regular diet. For these people, vitamins provide convenient doses of important nutrients their bodies may be missing.

If you’re taking vitamins or looking to add them to your diet to manage knee pain, Coryell Health physicians can recommend relief beyond supplements. Give us a call at (254) 865-2166 to start on the path to overall health and wellness.

Are you feeling anxious, nervous or overwhelmed? We’ve all been there. A deadline at work, financial strains and fights with family or friends can all cause stress that can sometimes feel debilitating. There are several methods of stress management that doctors and mental health professionals recommend, and successful strategies differ from person to person. There’s one method that costs less than $10, can be car ried in your purse or briefcase and is helpful for adults and children. Have you tried using a stress ball to reduce your nerves?

What Is Stress

Stress is any type of change that “causes physical, emotional or psychological strain” on your body. This strain may manifest in a headache, muscle tension, fatigue, chest pain or sleep problems. You may notice your mood shifting as well—are you more irritable than usual, unmotivated or restless? These are all symptoms that may indicate you’re experiencing stress.

You can’t avoid stress completely, but you can manage it more effectively to reduce uncomfortable symptoms, minimizing its impact on your daily life. Stress balls might be an option for you to help manage symptoms of minor stresses.

What Are Stress Balls?

Stress balls are small toys filled with rub ber, gel, foam or other objects meant to cre ate a “squishy” texture that allows for the holder to squeeze, twist or manipulate the ball. Stress balls were created to give people an outlet for their anxiety, and studies show they can work. What makes them effective? Squeezing the toy gives your body the chance to release some of that pent-up pressure in a tangible way. Your muscles contract and release in your hand and arm, freeing some of the strain held throughout the rest of your body into the object

in your hand, forcing you to relax. Stress balls can also distract your mind away from your stress, so you’re not focusing on the cause of your anxiety.

How Should I Use Stress Balls?

There are several ways you can use your stress ball to manage your symptoms.

1. Place the stress ball on a hard, flat surface and roll the ball, curling your fingers into it as you rotate it across the surface. Squeeze the foam tightly for a few seconds before releasing it. Repeat as necessary.

2. Place the ball between your hands while your arms are extended vertically into the air, squeeze the ball for a few seconds, then relax. Repeat as necessary.

3. Probably the most straightforward technique, grab the ball in your hand as you walk or sit at your desk and simply squeeze it tightly for several seconds. Repeat as needed.

Other Uses of Stress Balls

Stress balls aren’t just used to alleviate anxiety. For people suffering from arthritis, stress balls are an option to try and reduce inflammation in the hands and wrists. Moving your muscles and exercising are recommended to help reduce the pain associated with the condition. For patients undergoing physical therapy treatments, stress balls provide rehabilitation and exercises that can strengthen the muscles in their hands, wrists or arms. Stress balls can also be used by patients receiving cancer treatments to maintain muscle strength during chemotherapy.

For less than a fast food meal, you can try out a stress ball yourself. If you’re still having trouble managing your stress levels, talk to your Coryell Health primary care provider about lifestyle changes you can make to boost your mood and reduce your day-to-day tension.

The first thing you should know as a prospective home seller is, it’s still a great market! That’s right, for over 2 years now, sellers have been uniquely positioned to get the best possible value for the sale of their homes. We even saw sellers receive offers well above asking price on occasion. It’s Economics 101: when you have more buyers than product, the price will often rise.

There are a number of reasons why sellers are still enjoying a great market. First, let’s talk a little more about that concept of inventory. During the pandemic, people everywhere began reassessing their priorities. Many decided to downsize, move out of town to the country or even across the country for a variety of reasons. In essence, everyone was in the market for a home at the same time. Mid-priced homes, particularly, entered and left the market in record time. Current inventory is actually up from last year but it’s still less inventory than the industry was accustomed to pre-2020.

Next, there’s this business with interest rates. Interest rates are certainly up by contemporary standards. However, let’s put things in perspective. At the turn of the century, the average interest rate was over 8%. Twenty years before that, it was closer to 18%. So, while rates are higher than say 5 years ago, they’re still pretty low from a historical standpoint.

Right now, as a seller you’re holding the key to the most important tangible asset out there. No, not your vintage Beanie Baby collection, your home! For the time being, multiple offer situations look to be the norm. Lots of buyers want what you have and they’re willing to offer a fair price to get it. If only that were the case with Beanie Babies, ha!

Don’t think it’s all a done deal though. As a seller, focus on maximizing the curb appeal of your home or ranch to increase interest and value, especially considering a more “normal” looking housing market could be on the way sooner than later. Or, if there’s one thing we’ve learned over the last few years, a new version of normal. So, make those repairs, add that new coat of paint, and keep standing out from the competition!

Crustless Rotisserie Chicken Pot Pie Casserole

Pot pie without the pie?? Yes, if you are craving those comfy, cozy flavors - delicious creaminess with sweet veggies and the hearty goodness of chicken, and yet, you don’t feel like the extra work of dealing with a pie, pastry or biscuits.

This crustless pot pie casserole works because: It spells EASY. It shouts QUICK weeknight dinner. Why? It has precooked rotisserie chicken. Who doesn’t love that leftover rotisserie chicken in your fridge? This dish will take just 15 minutes of your active hands and the rest will bake peacefully in your oven.

This one uses pantry staples you already have in your kitchen. No fancy shmancy long ingredient list. Just a few veggies, a little cream and little broth and a few other basic accompaniments.

It results in one wholesome, hearty meal that everybody will love to dig in to at the end of the day.

1 2 3 4

Casseroles like this are a must for cool evenings. Warm up the belly bringing back all those childhood pot pie loving memories.

What you need for this crustless chicken pot pie casserole:

• Rotisserie chicken – Shredded or cubed.

• Fresh veggies – Onion, carrots and celery. All diced.

• Frozen veggies – Corn and peas.

• Garlic – Finely chopped.

• Cream – We are using heavy but you can go light.

• Chicken broth

• Parmesan cheese

• Panko

• Flour

• Butter

• Noodles – We are using bowtie, but really any kind of cooked noodles will work.

• Salt & pepper

This is what you do…

This one is one of the easiest casseroles you can whip up on a busy night. Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees F.

Cook the noodles according to the instructions on the package. You want to cook them al dente, as they will be cooking more in an oven.

Heat butter in your cast iron skillet. Sauté onion, carrots, celery and garlic for 3-4 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and stir in flour. Cook for a minute.

Add in chicken broth and cream and cook for another 3 minutes or so until it starts thickening up a bit.

Stir in chicken and mix well. Time for the thawed peas and corn to go in, along with cooked noodles. Combine well.

In a bowl, mix panko and parmesan cheese together and layer it nicely over the chicken noodle mixture. Now this one is ready to go in the oven for 25-30 minutes.

That’s it. Look out for the nice crusty golden brown top. Let it cool down for a few minutes and dig in. Your perfect all in one (veggies + protein + carb) no hassle casserole. Ain’t that easy? All your pot pie flavors without the work. We love to give you easy.

Being in charge of the budget

Are your children constantly asking you for money? One Florida father found a way to nip that in the bud: He had his teen and preteen sign a contract stating what expenses he would pay for, then gave them a set amount of money to spend each month for clothing, cellphone bill and extras. “My son’s hard lesson came when his friend pushed him into a pool along with his cellphone. He learned why it’s important to build a reserve for unexpected expenses,” the father said. Giving your kids a paycheck allows them the chance to make financial decisions – and experience the consequences firsthand.

The economics of higher ed

We’ve all asked a kid, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Instead ask what their interests are, and help them explore how they might be applied in a future career. This teaches them adaptability, something of value in a changing economic landscape. As they get closer to making a decision about whether to attend college or trade school, help them think through the costs and benefits. Junior Achievement’s Access Your Future app can help them crunch the numbers. And if you have a child already attending college, know that timing is everything. Yale researchers have found that graduating from college in a bad economy has a lasting negative impact on wages – and many students are considering gap years and grad school because of this.

The roots of retirement

Raise your hand if you want to raise a child who will hit the ground running when it comes to saving for retirement. Personal finance experts say we should let our children know that retirement is the biggest expense they’ll ever save for, and it’s important to start early. To help them understand the value of compounding, help them open a savings account (or guardian-type brokerage account) where they can experience the power of this phenomenon for themselves.

Extra credit knowledge

When you’re young and don’t have much money, it’s easy to rely too much on credit and jeopardize your financial future. Help your child understand the importance of a good credit score, and explain how you keep yours up. Share stories about how you financed your first car or house, and explain in concrete terms how the interest rate affected the overall purchase price. Finally, consider adding your teen as an authorized user on your credit card and teaching them how to read a statement and pay the balance in full each month.

A positive and encouraging spiritual outlook on God's Word

Embracing Resilience

While on a walk this evening, I came across a tree that stood out to me for the first time. It is a giant tree that stands tall and strong, but its trunk is in the shape of a perfect "S". God immediately spoke to me. Imagine the weight, load, and pain it must have had to bear to end up so crooked. What could have put this kind of pressure on it? But the roots go deep. The tree stands tall and firm. It still blooms with the seasons and bears its own kind of fruit.

I don't know about you, but sometimes it feels like life has taken its toll on me. There are days it is hard to stand up straight, physically and mentally. There are days when I simply want to quit. When the days are hard, I press in ever closer to God and allow Him to carry me so that tomorrow, I can continue my mission. Stand tall, dear friend. You may have had a rough journey, but God isn't done with you yet. Life may have taken away the normal, standard beauty we once had, but it is the uniqueness of our trials that draw people to us. When you're

tired, draw near to God and let Him carry you. Dig down into your roots. Stand tall and flourish. Your life is God's story, it's not your shame. Plant the seeds and bear the fruit.

As the sun sets over the horizon, a palpable excitement fills the air in small towns across Texas. Storefronts adorned with team colors proudly display their unwavering support for the hometown heroes. The atmosphere is electric, charged with an unexplainable fervor that sets these communities alight. For those unacquainted with the Texan way of life, it may seem enigmatic, but for the people of this great state, it's a way of life - it's high school football season.

The arrival of football season brings an unmatched sense of hope and enthusiasm to communities in rural Texas. It's a time of unity, when the town rallies behind its young athletes, and spirits are lifted higher than ever before. In the days leading up to Friday night, anticipation builds, as everyone

prepares to sport their team colors proudly and engage in spirited discussions about the upcoming game and the rival team's perceived weaknesses. The stadium lights flicker to life, and the spirit of anticipation fills the air. For generations, families and friends have gathered under those lights, coming together to witness the magic and camaraderie that only Friday night football can deliver.

In the early days, rural Texas high school football was an entirely different experience. The first games were played on dusty fields with makeshift bleachers and minimal amenities. The passion for the sport, however, was no less fervent. As communities grew and prosperity followed, these small towns invested in constructing state-of-the-art stadiums that stand as monuments to their unwavering love for the game.

Today, modern rural Texas stadiums are impressive sights to behold, equipped with turf fields, grandstands, and topnotch facilities. Despite the advancements, the essence of Friday night football remains unchanged - it's a time for local pride, unity, and a testament to the values that bind these close-knit communities.

For many, high school football is more than just a sport; it's a way of life, ingrained in the very essence of their being. From the players on the field to the fans in the stands, it's a calling that draws them together in an unbreakable bond of shared passion and pride. This is Texas football, and it's a tradition that stretches back generations.

The offseason was a time of reflection and preparation, as teams analyzed their performances and honed their skills for the season ahead. But now, the wait is over, and the stage is set for the young athletes to take the field once more.

As the players take the field, and the crowd erupts into cheers, it's evident that high school football is more than just a game; it's a source of pride, joy, and inspiration. It's a chance for the entire town to come together, setting aside differences and uniting under a common goal - to support and uplift their team. Families, alumni, students, and business owners all share in the excitement, forming a sea of team colors and jerseys that transform the stadium into a vibrant tapestry of community spirit.

Beyond the game itself, the football season becomes a focal point for community involvement. From pep rallies and tailgate parties to local events and fundraisers, Friday night lights breathe life into these towns, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.

For the youth in rural Texas, Friday night football represents more than just a game; it's a source of inspiration. As young children watch their older peers donning the jerseys and taking the field, they dream of the day they too will represent their town under the stadium lights.

High school football players become role models for the younger generations, demonstrating that with dedication and hard work, anything is possible. Their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom set a standard for excellence, motivating the next generation to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.

To outsiders, it may seem like an unfamiliar spectacle, but for Texans, it's a tradition that is etched into the very fabric of their identity. It's an embodiment of the Texan spirit - resilient, passionate, and unwavering in its dedication.

The fervent support for high school football demonstrates the deeply rooted love and dedication that rural Texans have for their towns. It's a reciprocal relationship; the community supports the teams, and in return, the teams give their all, fostering an unbreakable bond that reinforces the sense of unity and belonging.

For many rural Texans, Friday night football serves as an escape from the stresses and challenges of everyday life. In a world dominated by technology and fast-paced living, the simplicity and authenticity of high school football provide solace and a much-needed respite.

On Friday nights, the focus shifts away from the pressures of work, school, and responsibilities, as the community immerses itself in the game's excitement and cheers on their team with unbridled enthusiasm. It's a time when neighbors come together, swapping stories, and creating memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.

In an era of constant change, Friday night football in rural Texas stands as a timeless tradition, preserving the essence of small-town life. As technology and urbanization continue to shape the world around us, the significance of this cherished tradition only grows stronger. As the night comes to a close, and the final whistle blows, the cheers may fade, but the spirit of Friday night football lives on. It's more than just a game; it's a tradition that binds communities together, creating a legacy of pride that will be passed down from one generation to the next. For as long as there are football fields and Friday nights, the spirit of unity, pride, and community will thrive under the shining lights of rural Texas. In this sacred space, bonds are forged, dreams are nurtured, and the soul of these towns is illuminated, igniting a flame of hope and camaraderie that will burn brightly for generations to come.

FOSTER PARENTS NEEDED

Hey, everyone! We've got an important issue that needs your immediate attention. The number of children in foster care has skyrocketed to over 300, and it's become a crisis that demands action. What's even more concerning is that around 50% of these vulnerable kids have been placed in counties outside McLennan, tearing them away from the communities they know and love. We urgently need more foster families right here in our county to step up and make a difference.

It's clear that there's a significant shortage of foster homes within McLennan County, and it's forcing children to be placed far away from their familiar surroundings, schools, friends, and extended families. We appreciate the dedication and tireless efforts of our existing foster families, but the shocking statistics underline the desperate need for more individuals and couples to open their hearts and homes to these vulnerable children.

The impact of being uprooted from their community can be devastating for children who are already facing challenging circumstances. When they're separated from their support networks, it only worsens their feelings of abandonment, isolation, and uncertainty, hindering their overall well-being and development. By keeping kids in their home community, we can help them maintain crucial connections and a sense of stability, significantly increasing their chances of positive outcomes and successful transitions.

That's why CK Family Services is working tirelessly to address this issue head-on. They've implemented various initiatives to support foster families throughout the county, including convenient online training and access to resources designed to ease the transition and provide comprehensive support for both children and foster parents.

We strongly encourage all prospective foster families to explore this incredibly rewarding opportunity and make a profound impact on the lives of these children. Sure, it's a commitment that comes with challenges, but the positive difference you can make is immeasurable. By offering a safe and nurturing environment, foster families play an essential role in helping children heal, grow, and thrive.

If you're interested in becoming a foster parent right here in McLennan County, reach out to CK Family Services, a local Child Placing Agency with over 22 years of experience serving children in Texas. It's time for our McLennan County community to come together and tackle this pressing issue. Every child in need deserves to find a loving, supportive home right here in their own community. For parents whose children come to them from the foster care system, the journey may seem daunting and uncertain. Many would describe it as challenging, but for those who embrace their role with love, patience, and grace, it can make all the difference in the world and shape the future of a child's life. One proud momma shares her story of watching her child bloom after her time in the system, describing the dark walks they had to take together and the immense pride she feels for the remarkable journey her daughter has undertaken.

At the tender age of 13, her daughter came into their lives from a family entrenched in the turmoil of guns, gangs, and substance abuse. In her short 13 years, she had endured and experienced more than most adults ever would. The agency warned against taking her in, citing potential challenges and difficulties. However, there was something in her eyes that pleaded for a chance, a glimmer of hope that demanded attention. Undeterred, they drove six hours across the state to pick her up.

During their initial talks, lasting for hours, the momma could see the flicker of light within her daughter's darkness. It was a light that held the promise of growth and brightness if nurtured with care. The first few days were spent building trust and establishing routines. The momma encour-

aged her daughter to find one positive thing to focus on every day. To her amazement, within three days, the daughter showed her "the book," a journal of sorts. It began with sad and disturbing drawings, a reflection of the burdens she carried. But as they reached a bookmarked page, the tone shifted. The daughter had written small victories she experienced daily, such as "I wasn't sad today" or "I liked my clothes today." In these seemingly insignificant moments, the momma realized that her daughter was finding light in the smallest things that most of us take for granted.

Weeks turned into months, months into years, and the daughter continued to grow and shine. Despite the challenges, she excelled in school and formed lifelong friendships, creating beautiful memories along the way. Her determination led her to graduate high school with a full-time job, shouldering daily responsibilities with newfound appreciation. She achieved remarkable milestones, purchasing her first car and eventually stepping out on her own. As time passed, she embraced motherhood with the love and care she longed for as a child. She broke a cycle that had haunted her family for generations, proving that a person's past does not have to define their future.

Although she chose not to be legally adopted, preserving her heritage and keeping

her last name, she will forever be a part of their family. She has grown into a wonderful, responsible young woman, skillfully balancing work, motherhood, and her role as a spouse and daughter. Her journey serves as a testament to the power of love and resilience, demonstrating that the love and support of a caring family can transform lives.

Through darkness and adversity, this young woman has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of love and how the simplest gestures of care can ignite the light within even the darkest of souls. She embodies the strength of the human spirit and the will to break free from the shackles of a troubled past.

As her momma shares their story, she does so with immense pride, knowing that they have made a profound impact on this incredible young woman's life. She is a living testament to the potential that lies within all children, a shining example of how love, patience, and grace can nurture a soul and guide it towards a brighter, more promising future. In her journey from darkness to light, she has not only transformed her own life but also become a beacon of hope for others, proving that love and resilience can overcome even the most challenging of circumstances.

Managing Expectations For A New School Year

As the summer comes to a close, a new school year beckons with the promise of fresh beginnings and opportunities for growth. Beginning a new academic journey can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, as students face the challenge of managing their expectations. This article aims to explore effective strategies for navigating a new school year and ensuring that expectations are realistic, balanced, and conducive to success.

One of the key aspects of managing expectations is setting realistic goals. While it is important to aim high, it is equally crucial to be aware of one’s capabilities and limitations. Students should reflect on their previous academic performance, strengths, and areas for improvement when setting their goals. By establishing attainable objectives, students can experience a sense of accomplishment and avoid unnecessary pressure.

A positive mindset is a powerful tool in managing expectations. It is essential for students to approach the new school year with optimism and a belief in their ability to succeed. Embracing challenges as opportunities for growth and viewing setbacks as learning experiences can help maintain a positive outlook. Cultivating a growth mindset encourages students to persevere, adapt to new situations, and celebrate incremental progress.

Effective time management is a crucial skill for students embarking on a new school year. The academic journey often involves juggling multiple responsibilities, such as coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments. By creating a schedule and prioritizing tasks, students can ensure that they allocate sufficient time to each endeavor. This practice not only reduces stress but also enhances productivity and allows for a more balanced lifestyle.

Managing expectations becomes easier when students have a support system in place. Building positive relationships with teachers, peers, and mentors creates an environment conducive to growth and learning. Students should actively seek guidance and ask for help when needed. Having

a support network provides encouragement, advice, and the reassurance that they are not alone in their academic journey.

The ability to adapt to unexpected changes and unforeseen challenges is crucial for managing expectations effectively. Flexibility allows students to navigate through uncertain situations and adjust their plans accordingly. It is important to recognize that setbacks or deviations from initial expectations are not failures but opportunities to learn, reassess, and grow. Embracing flexibility fosters resilience and ensures a smoother transition into the new school year.

In the pursuit of academic excellence, it is vital to maintain a healthy work-life balance. While dedicating time and effort to academics is essential, it is equally important to allocate time for relaxation, hobbies, physical activity, and social interactions. Striking a balance between academic pursuits and personal well-being promotes mental and emotional well-being, prevents burnout, and supports long-term success.

Regularly monitoring progress is essential for managing expectations effectively. Students should set aside time to reflect on their achievements, assess their growth, and identify areas for improvement. Celebrating achievements, whether big or small, boosts self-confidence and motivation. By acknowledging progress, students can stay motivated and maintain a positive outlook throughout the school year.

A new school year brings with it a fresh start and abundant opportunities for growth. By managing expectations effectively, students can navigate this journey with confidence, resilience, and a positive mindset. Setting realistic goals, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, seeking support, and embracing adaptability are all essential elements of managing expectations successfully. As students embark on this new chapter, may they approach it with enthusiasm, determination, and the knowledge that their efforts will lead to personal and academic growth.

There is no better way than to promote the positive. So let us hear from you!

If you stop a person on the street and ask them who their favorite teacher was in school or a teacher that changed them, everyone can remember at least one teacher that impacted their life. Good teachers offer students a rich learning experience that they will carry with them throughout life..

However, it is hard to be a teacher, and it has been for a while. Teachers face many hardships but one that all teachers can agree with is the cost to furnish your classroom with tools that can help your students.

Out-of-pocket expenses for teachers average over $800, but they are only able to claim $300 for deductions on their taxes. According to an article by the National Education Association, 90% of teachers spend their own money on supplies that their students need. As a way to help ease not only the burden on educators but also on school districts, education foundations have almost become a necessity. Education foundations provide funds beyond the normal operating budget for educational programs and activities for students and staff. It is a common way to help facilitate student achievement and skill development, recognize and encourage staff excellence, and expand community involvement in the education of students.

In 1999, Friends of Hamilton ISD was established as a 501(c)3 IRSapproved non-profit organization in order to raise funds for Hamilton. The organization raised funds for the Hamilton High School gymnasium seats. Its focus then turned toward scholarships for graduating seniors. In 2011, a new board of directors was established with the goal of turning the organization into a vehicle to make an impact on the students and teachers of HISD.

Since Friends of Hamilton ISD’s inception, it has given away over $400,000 to Hamilton ISD. FoHISD raises funds through donors, events, and HISD employees giving back. One of the main fundraisers FoHISD has is the annual Boots and Bling. Boots and Bling is a fun night of music, food, and silent and live auctions with proceeds ben-

efiting different projects at the school. Teachers will apply for grants which can be funded through board selection or by attendees of Boots and Bling.

One such grant was for students going on a summer trip to Washington DC and New York through the student travel group Explore America to attend a Broadway show. FoHISD stepped in to provide tickets to see Hamilton. Teacher and chaperone Maury Heers was so grateful for the generosity,

“Friends of Hamilton is there to step in with the little things as well as the big ticket items. It helps relieve a burden on our teachers and school district to help provide for extra classroom items financially. They also help open doors for students to have opportunities to learn new skills and form new memories through experiences. I am so thankful to have a foundation that supports Hamilton ISD the way that they do.”

Hamilton Junior High teacher Nancy Henkes has benefitted from grants provided by FoHISD. They have provided flexible seating that allowed more choices for students and promoted engagement. FoHISD provided reading incentives that allowed teachers to create rewards for outside reading. Nancy said that her students’ average reading levels have risen from 3- million-word readers to 8 million-word-readers as of last year. She is also eager to put into place a new Promethean board and Merlyn Mind that will allow her to use technology and not be stuck behind her computer but help her students engage.

High School Counselor Betsy Killian said that FoHISD has been instrumental in covering the costs for entrance exams to college such as the SAT and ACT. The support of the educational foundation has removed the financial barriers for these students and Hamilton High School is grateful for their support.

A grant fulfilled in 2021 was to upgrade the old tennis courts to turf. These courts had fallen into disrepair over the years. This grant was put in motion to bring new life to the courts and allow students to use them year-round. Elementary Principal James Slone did a lot of the heavy lifting by cleaning up the courts before turf and new fencing were installed. The area now provides a secure outdoor space for PE, an alternative recess area, an outdoor classroom option, a community

“A good education can change anyone. A good teacher can change everything!” ~ Unknown

and school sports practice area, a place for outdoor ceremonies and gatherings, and much more.

The year 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic robbed us of many things. That year the fifth-grade class was not able to attend the annual pilgrimage to Outdoor School in Marble Falls. This trip helps promote team building within the group, motivates them to try new things, and just go out and have some fun. Two years later FoHISD provided funds to send that class to Outdoor School. Hamilton Junior High Counselor, Kristin Summers, said “FoHISD is an excellent organization that makes so many impossible projects come true for teachers and staff!”

Another classroom grant that was funded by FoHISD was a floral cooler for the Hamilton High School Floral Design class. The cooler allowed the class to order flowers and keep them longer for arrangements. Ag teacher, Terry Baize, said “The Friends of Hamilton ISD has been a great benefit to not only my program but to programs across the district. Their efforts have allowed us to enrich our students' educational experiences to better prepare them for life after they leave Hamilton ISD.” The Floral Design students can regularly be seen delivering arrangements to teachers across Hamilton ISD, which brightens their day, and providing floral arrangements for Boots and Bling.

To help alleviate the burden on teachers furnishing supplies from their classrooms, FoHISD, recently implemented Judy’s Closet. Judy’s Closet was named after Judy Roach, a former teacher and advocate for education. Judy’s Closet is a supply closet with pens, highlighters, paper, cardstock, staplers, tape, and various other supplies on all three campuses.

FoHISD has helped teachers reach students in many ways. Several years ago they provided classroom sets of Chromebooks for high school teacher Patricia Leach’s classroom. These Chromebooks were a welcome addition to the classroom when the school didn’t have 1:1 devices. They recently purchased turf equipment for fourth-grade class-

rooms, so students had items to play with on the turf. A small addition of classroom sets of clipboards allows students the mobility to work on assignments outside, in the classrooms, and in the hallways. Learning games and different curriculums reach students in ways that engage and help them grow.

FoHISD not only provides for teachers inside the classroom but shows them how much they appreciate all they do outside the classroom. During the first part of May, many school districts across the nation celebrate teacher appreciation week. FoHISD partners with local businesses to celebrate teachers with free treats all week. In the past teachers could enjoy a dinner for two at Circle T, dinner for four at The Grain, plants from the Farmers Market, free drinks at Sonic, lunch from Storm’s, and that’s just naming off a few days! Ask any teacher, and they will say that teacher appreciation week is their favorite week all year.

One special event that FoHISD sponsors annually is the Shining Apple Awards. Each spring, seniors nominate a teacher that has had an impact on their life. It can be any teacher during their school years. Seniors write a letter that describes how that educator has changed their life for the better. Seniors then have the opportunity to read the letter and present the teacher with a plaque at the awards. Many happy tears are shed at this event as seniors list ways that a special teacher has helped them become a better version of themselves. You will walk out of the Shining Apple Awards with renewed hope in our education system and those that are on the front lines.

Teacher, Nancy Henkes, perhaps sums up the relationship between educational foundations and teachers.

“The best way for us to meet the needs of our students is to work together with other educators, parents, and community members. Friends of Hamilton ISD is a model of that communication. They help to make things happen in the classroom by providing support to teachers and directly to students.”

Iver, The War on Drugs, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Waxahatchee). Briscoe draws musical influence from what many consider the golden years of music - the late 1960s to the mid1970s. Artists such as Neil Young, James Taylor, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, Carole King, and Paul Simon have influenced the pair musically and lyrically. With a variety of instrumentation, Briscoe's live shows and studio recordings meander in and out of genres while consistently showcasing meaningful songwriting and unique melodies.

September 22 - Vincent Neil Emerson at HiCo Hall - Wedding & Event Venue, doors open at 6:30PM, show starts at 8PM. Vincent Neil Emerson is a torchbearer of the Texas songwriter tradition. He channels the straightforward truthtelling and resonance of his songwriting heroes in Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, and Steve Earle into something fresh and distinctly his own. Where his 2019 debut Fried Chicken and Evil Women proved that he is one of the most reverent students of country and Western musical traditions, his follow-up LP, the masterful Rodney Crowell-produced Vincent Neil Emerson, which is out June 25 via La Honda Records/ Thirty Tigers, is a brave step forward that solidifies his place as one of music's most compelling and emotionally clarifying storytellers. His songs are cathartic and bluntly honest, never mincing words or dancing around uncomfortable truths.
