The Iconic

Dutchman’s

Hidden Valley Country Store

Tucked into the rolling hills of Hamilton County, where Highway 281 weaves its way through the heart of the Texas Hill Country, sits a true Lone Star treasure: Dutchman’s Hidden Valley Country Store—a beloved roadside destination, landmark business, and slice of history that has been welcoming travelers and locals alike since 1961.

Now, for the first time in generations, this legendary establishment is for sale, offering a rare opportunity to own a profitable business and a cornerstone of Texas culture.

From Humble Beginnings to Hill Country Icon

The story of Dutchman’s began in 1961, when the original structure—won in a poker game by Hidden Valley’s original creator, Johnny Harris—was moved from Energy, Texas. What started as a modest fruit stand built from repurposed army barracks quickly became a roadside favorite, offering weary travelers sweet summer peaches, homemade jams, and a generous helping of Texas hospitality. Over the years, new rooms were added, the selection of goods grew, and the once-humble stand blossomed into the vibrant and eclectic country store it is today.

In 1985, under the vision of Ronnie Wenzel, fondly known as the “square-headed Dutchman,” the store embraced its next chapter with the introduction of the Smokehouse and Deli. Ron’s passion for flavor and tradition brought a new dimension to the business, where recipes made from scratch became in-

stant favorites and the smell of smoked meats and fresh bread became part of the experience.

More Than a Store—A Texas Tradition

Today, Dutchman’s Hidden Valley is run by Ron’s daughter, Kara Chorenziak, and a close-knit team that continues the legacy of hard work, heartfelt service, and old-fashioned goodness. The store is stocked wall-to-wall with Texas-made treats and treasures:

✓Handmade pecan and peanut brittle

✓ Produced canned goods, bison-made meat sausage and other meat products

✓ Taffy, fudge, and chocolates

✓ Jewelry, candles, lotions, and toys

✓ Unique antiques, gifts and more!

Every visit to Dutchman’s feels like stepping back in time—into a space where strangers are welcomed like old friends and where the rich aroma of smoked meats and homemade candies wraps around you like a warm Texas hug.

Guests often grab a Bavarian Ham Sandwich from the deli, find a cold drink, and sit on the new outdoor patio that overlooks a tranquil creek, soaking in the charm and serenity of this tucked away treasure.

A Picture-Perfect Setting

The property is a postcard-perfect reflection of Hill Country living, situated on four scenic acres with a log cabin, a windmill,

and stunning views of the surrounding hills. The high-traffic location, with approximately 4,500 vehicles passing daily on Hwy 281, makes it ideal for travelers and tourists heading to and from Central Texas.

Located just minutes from Hamilton, a charming town known for its historic courthouse, unique boutiques, antique stores, and rich agricultural roots, Dutchman’s sits at the intersection of tradition, tourism, and potential.

A Legacy Worth Continuing

Dutchman’s Hidden Valley is more than a business. It's a family tradition, a road trip memory, and a Texas institution. Generations of travelers have made it a must-stop for snacks, gifts, and a moment of joy on the road. Locals know it as a gathering place, a lunch spot, and a reminder of what makes small-town Texas special. Now, the next owner has the opportunity to preserve this legacy, expand on its potential, and make it their own.

Dutchman's offers an incredible foundation, whether you're a restaurateur, retailer, entrepreneur, or simply looking to build a life around community and connection. With room to grow, opportunities for expansion (think event space, local wine tasting, or outdoor markets), and a reputation already established across the state, this property is truly one of a kind.

Own a piece of Texas history. Embrace the charm. Continue the legacy. Dutchman’s Hidden Valley Country Store is waiting for its next chapter—could it be yours? For more information please get in touch with Tai Cobb Klam, Broker 254-253-1057.

In the heart of Central Texas, where community values run deep and neighbors treat each other like family, one business has built a reputation not only on high-quality service, but on compassion, dedication, and a commitment to helping others in their most challenging moments. Heart of Texas Restoration, LLC, founded and led by Brentt Raybion, is more than a restoration company—it’s a lifeline when disaster strikes.

A Legacy Born from Family Roots

Brentt Raybion is no stranger to hard work, resilience, and the importance of community. A proud resident of Brady, Texas for over 38 years, Brentt’s journey into the world of service began fresh out of high school. In 2001, at just 20 years old, he started Heart of Texas Carpet Cleaning, continuing the family legacy and building on decades of trust and commitment. That early decision set the foundation for what would later grow into Heart of Texas Restoration, LLC—a certified firm now recognized across the region for its expertise in disaster recovery.

With more than 23 years of experience in the restoration industry, Brentt has built his company from the ground up, specializing in water extraction, demolition, antimicrobial application, structural dry-outs, and detailed documentation for both residential and commercial projects. He’s been on the front lines of some of the nation’s most devastating natural disasters—responding to hurricanes like Francis, Jeanne, Katrina, Ike, Harvey, Florence, Imelda, Ian, Beryl, and most recently, Helene and Milton. Whether it's floodwaters or fire damage, Brentt and his team are ready to step in when people need them most.

Certifications, Commitment, and Community Impact

Brentt holds a Mold Remediation Contractor License (#MRC 1705) and numerous certifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), including Applied Microbial Remediation, Water Damage Restoration, Fire and Smoke Damage Restoration, Odor Control, and Carpet Cleaning. His company also maintains Certificate Liability Insurance and certification

through the American Policyholder Association, providing added assurance to every customer they serve.

But Brentt’s impact extends beyond his restoration work. He is also an active member of the McCulloch County Commissioners Court, where he plays a vital role in managing budgeting decisions and tax rates that affect local growth and safety. In 2020, he was honored with the Large Business of the Year Award by McCulloch County—a testament to both his business success and his contributions to the community.

Family at the Core

What makes Heart of Texas Restoration truly special is its foundation in family. Brentt runs the company alongside several close family members, each playing a vital role in daily operations and long-term success.

Kayde Raybion, Brentt’s daughter, came on board six and a half years ago and has since grown into her role as a Supervisor with tremendous skill and heart. At just 24 years old, Kayde oversees day-to-day operations on restoration projects, ensuring they’re completed on time and within budget. With her own IICRC certifications in water damage, fire damage, mold remediation, odor control, and carpet cleaning—and her own Mold Remediation Contractor License—Kayde has already managed millions of dollars in recovery work.

Her passion, however, goes far beyond logistics. “I just want to serve,” Kayde says, echoing the deep spiritual and community values that have become a cornerstone of the company. She also serves as Vice President on the board of the nonprofit organization Smoke on the Hill, which has raised $90,000 for the local Brady Volunteer Fire Department over the past three years.

Sheri Land, Brentt’s mother and the company’s longtime Office Administrator, is the heartbeat of Heart of Texas Restoration’s daily operations. With 23 years

of administrative experience, she keeps the wheels turning smoothly—managing everything from staff supervision and budgeting to correspondence and scheduling. Her ability to keep a busy restoration business running efficiently is a feat in itself, but Sheri is also a professional BBQ competitor who has earned titles like Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion with her team “Texas Charm,” placing in categories like goat, bison, brisket, ribs, and more.

Sheri’s devotion doesn’t stop at the smoker or the office— she also serves as Treasurer and Event Coordinator for Smoke on the Hill, using her organizational talents and community spirit to help raise tens of thousands of dollars for the local fire department. Above all else, Sheri is a spiritual leader, passionate about God, family, and helping others through life’s trials.

Dylan Raybion, Brentt’s son, and Blake Raybion, Brentt’s brother, are both field supervisors within the company, each playing a critical role in on-site operations and project oversight. Whether it's coordinating crews during a water damage emergency or ensuring safety protocols are followed during mold remediation, their presence in the field reinforces the family-first, service-driven culture at the core of the business.

With a total of 19 employees—many of whom have worked with the Raybion family for years—the Heart of Texas Restoration team truly operates like a big extended family. Their loyalty, care, and teamwork are evident in everything they do.

Going Beyond Business

When disaster strikes, Heart of Texas Restoration doesn't just show up for work—they show up for people. Most recently, when the devastating Panhandle Fires swept across Texas, Brentt, his family, and his employees sprang into action, organizing a supply drive and traveling to the

region to feed thousands of firefighters and families. This wasn’t a job assignment—it was a heartfelt mission to provide relief and support.

That same spirit of generosity and leadership is what fuels the company’s two flagship annual events. The Smoke on the Hill BBQ Cook-off, organized to support the Brady Volunteer Fire Department, has raised an impressive $90,000 in just three years. It's a festive weekend filled with community, competition, and good food—all for a great cause. Brentt takes great pride in leading this event alongside his family and their nonprofit board.

The Purple Heart Hunt is another passion project for Brentt and his team. Held each year on Veterans Day weekend, this event provides a special hunting experience for wounded warriors, offering not just a weekend of relaxation but also a heartfelt thank you to those who have sacrificed for our country.

More Than Just Restoration

Heart of Texas Restoration is about more than remediation. It’s about resilience, compassion, and community. From a carpet cleaning business as a teenager to becoming a multibusiness entrepreneur with companies like Jay-Rabe Proper-

ties, LLC and Ray Conn Properties, LLC, Brentt has continuously looked for ways to serve his hometown.

Through these rental property ventures, he helps ensure quality housing is available in Brady, Texas—another testament to his commitment to community development and support. His businesses, his family, and his service projects all reflect one core belief: helping others is the most important work there is.

A Mission Fueled by Heart

When families are facing the aftermath of a flood, fire, or mold outbreak, the last thing they need is added stress. That’s where Heart of Texas Restoration comes in—not just with the tools, certifications, and equipment to handle the job, but with the compassion and understanding that only a family like the Raybions can provide.

From Brentt’s leadership and experience to Kayde’s energy and oversight, from Sheri’s organizational wizardry to the boots-on-the-ground support of Dylan and Blake, every member of this family pours their heart into helping others.

Yes, it’s a family affair—but it’s also a mission. One built on love for God, service to others, and a drive to make their community stronger every day.

ONLY TEXAS HAS THIS

There is a connection between the United Kingdom and Texas that no other state can claim. Do you know what it is?

There are a number of historical markers dotted around Texas, but in this case, there is a historical marker in London at 4 St. James’s Street that marks the location of the former embassy of the Republic of Texas. Yes, back in the day, President Sam Houston dispatched the Secretary of State, Dr. Ashbel Smith, to be the representative for the Republic of Texas in the United Kingdom.

What’s more interesting is that this was not the only Texas embassy ever opened. Another one was established at the Hôtel de Vendôme in Paris.

Of course, when Texas joined the Union in 1845, these embassies were shuttered, despite the support of the Crown for Texas’ independence. The funniest part? Apparently, Texas skipped town still owing 160 pounds in back rent—

which, in today’s money, is seven shillings and six pence, or one egg.

But it gets even better. In 1986, a group of Texans, dressed in full buckskins, returned to Berry Brothers & Rudd—the landlords—to settle the bill. To mark the occasion, Berry Brothers & Rudd created Texas Legation Bourbon Whiskey.

If anyone wants to send me a bottle of that, I wouldn’t mind—because that’s a piece of history I’ll drink to.

Having a Grand Champion doesn’t come easy!

In fact, just making the sale is extremely difficult in many situations. I’m talking everything from the Majors all the way to some local shows.

I realize that the different criteria make achieving the goal either harder or easier depending on what you’re using as the benchmark—but overall, the target doesn’t change. What does change, however, is the route you take to get there.

The number of entries versus the number that actually sell is the biggest obstacle in securing a sale slot. Sure, the Majors and State Shows sell a lot more animals than County or Local Shows—but they also have many more entries. You might be lucky enough to have a local or school show where everything makes the sale, but those are few and far between.

For example, your local show may only have 10 head of your chosen species, but if they only sell one of those, you’ve got a 10% chance of making the sale. It’s all a

numbers game. And just because you think you’ve got the best one, that doesn’t mean the judge will agree with you.

On any given day, it’s the judge’s opinion that matters. As a judge, an ag teacher, a dad, and a pawpaw, I understand that we all have different ideas of what the “greatest” or “best” should look like—and we’re all going to be a little bit different. That’s okay.

If I, as a judge, can explain why I placed them in a particular order—or if the judge can explain why one animal suits him or her better—and it’s an accurate explanation, then it’s simply a difference in opinion on which criteria matter more. That’s fair too. We all value different things at different levels. It’s one reason we have so many breeds and classes at shows: because we all like things just a little differently.

The best way to earn one of those many (or few) sale slots—depending on the show—is to start off right.

Giving your animal(s) a great start is a key piece to finishing well.

One way to start strong is by using Appetite Advantage™.

Appetite Advantage uses our original OXY-GEN® and CircQlate® as the base for this revolutionary product, which contains encapsulated live bacteria in pellet form. Our low-temperature pelleting process allows us to include beneficial bacteria inside the pellet, along with MOS to remove harmful bacteria from the digestive system.

Appetite Advantage helps increase beneficial bacteria throughout the entire digestive tract—not just in the gut—while removing harmful bacteria. It works in all classes of livestock, whether monogastric or ruminant.

It also helps improve digestion by allowing animals to absorb more nutrients from their feed and convert them to energy and bodily function. It increases respiration—not by making them breathe faster, but by improving the exchange of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and oxygen (O₂) in the blood cells—and enhances circulation without raising blood pressure.

In simple terms, Appetite Advantage helps your animal get more out of what it’s eating and convert that feed into growth and condition. Most exhibitors report:

• Less identifiable grain in waste

• Better hair and skin condition

• Improved feed conversion

• Deeper flanks (a sign of a well-functioning digestive system)

• And often—a better attitude, because the animal is healthier on the inside.

Appetite Advantage comes in two sizes: 11.25 lb. and 25 lb. pails.

Feeding rates are small and won’t disrupt your feed balance:

• Cattle & Swine: 3 oz/day

• Lambs & Goats: 1.5 oz/day

It can be fed through the entire feeding program or just as a starter or during times of dietary stress.

Get them off to a good start—feed Appetite Advantage.

Nurturing Future Stewards

In the realm of agriculture, where time-honored traditions meet modern innovation, the act of raising livestock takes on a profound significance beyond mere husbandry. For young enthusiasts at the junior level, this journey is not just about tending to animals; it’s a transformative experience that instills values of responsibility, resilience, and self-worth. As M. Scott Peck once said, “Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the hearts of young livestock raisers, guiding them on a path of self-discovery and personal growth.

At the core of raising livestock at the junior level lies a profound sense of self-worth and purpose. Whether caring for a calf, lamb, or pig, young raisers learn to recognize the inherent value within themselves and the animals entrusted to their care. This recognition forms the foundation of a bond that transcends the transactional nature of caretaker and creature, evolv-

ing into a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and empathy.

Indeed, the act of raising livestock demands an investment of time, energy, and unwavering dedication. From the early hours spent mucking out stalls to the late nights monitoring newborns, junior raisers quickly learn the importance of valuing their time and utilizing it wisely. Every moment spent in the barn becomes an opportunity for growth, learning, and selfimprovement, as they hone their skills in animal husbandry, problem-solving, and time management.

But beyond the tangible rewards of ribbons won and accolades earned lies a deeper sense of fulfillment derived from the act of nurturing and caring for another living being. In the quiet moments spent grooming a steer or soothing a restless lamb, young raisers discover a sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcends the boundaries of competition and achievement. They learn that true value lies not in the trophies on the

shelf, but in the relationships forged and the lessons learned along the way.

Moreover, raising livestock at the junior level fosters a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living things and the importance of stewardship and sustainability in agriculture. As they witness the cycle of life firsthand – from birth to maturity, and ultimately to the dinner table – young raisers gain a newfound respect for the animals that sustain them and the land that sustains them all.

Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.
- M. Scott Peck

In the end, the journey of raising livestock at the junior level is not just about producing champion animals or winning blue ribbons; it’s about nurturing the next generation of stewards, leaders, and advocates for agriculture. Through their experiences in the barnyard, young raisers learn to value themselves, their time, and the invaluable lessons gleaned from their interactions with the animals they raise. And as they embark on their respective paths, they carry with them the knowledge that their efforts are not just raising livestock; they are shaping the future of agriculture and leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. photos copyright Linde Photography

As the sun sets on another season of agricultural exhibitions and the dust settles in the show rings, there’s a poignant moment unfolding for junior livestock exhibitors across the nation. For these young individuals, who have dedicated countless hours to raising and showcasing their prized animals, the time has come to bid farewell to the major shows as they prepare to graduate high school. Yet, amidst the mixed emotions of saying goodbye to a cherished chapter of their lives, there’s a powerful message embodied in the words of Dr. Seuss: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

For many junior livestock exhibitors, the journey into the world of agricultural exhibitions begins long before high school graduation. From the moment they join organizations like 4-H or FFA, they immerse themselves in the rewarding yet demanding world of livestock husbandry. Whether it’s raising a steer, pig, lamb, or goat, these young exhibitors pour their hearts and souls into caring for their animals, learning invaluable life lessons along the way.

The bond between exhibitor and animal is one of the most profound aspects of the show experience. From the early days of halter-breaking to the late-night feeding sessions and grooming sessions, these young individuals form deep connections with their livestock projects. Through the highs of victories and the lows of setbacks, they learn the true meaning of responsibility, dedication, and resilience.

As graduation day approaches, many junior exhibitors find themselves reflecting on the journey they’ve been on—the triumphs, the challenges, and the countless memories that have shaped their high school experience. For some, showing livestock has been a lifelong passion, instilled in them by generations of family tradition. For others, it’s been a discovery—a chance to explore new interests, make lasting friendships, and develop valuable skills that will serve them well in the years to come.

Yet, as they stand on the threshold of adulthood, there’s a sense of anticipation mingled with nostalgia—a realization that

the major shows, with their familiar sights and sounds, will soon become a part of their past. For many, it’s a bittersweet moment—a time to celebrate the achievements and milestones of their show career while also acknowledging the inevitability of change and transition.

In the midst of this emotional whirlwind, the wisdom of Dr. Seuss offers a guiding light. “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” These words remind us to cherish the memories—the early mornings in the barn, the exhilaration of stepping into the show ring, the camaraderie shared with fellow exhibitors—and to celebrate the impact that showing livestock has had on our lives.

As they prepare to bid farewell to the major shows, junior exhibitors are filled with a sense of gratitude—for the experiences, the opportunities, and the countless moments of joy and camaraderie that have enriched their high school years. They’re grateful for the lessons learned—the resilience cultivated, the

friendships forged, and the values instilled—that will stay with them long after they’ve left the show ring behind.

And as they look ahead to the future, there’s a sense of excitement and optimism for the adventures that lie ahead. Graduation may mark the end of one chapter, but it’s also the beginning of a new journey—a chance to pursue dreams, explore passions, and make a difference in the world.

So, as junior livestock exhibitors prepare to step into the next chapter of their lives, let us heed the words of Dr. Seuss and choose to smile because it happened. Let us celebrate the memories, the friendships, and the countless moments of growth and discovery that have made the major shows such a meaningful part of their high school experience. And let us wish them all the best as they embark on new adventures, knowing that the lessons learned and the memories made will stay with them forever.

Braylee Wilson, a senior at Hamilton High School, has built a remarkable legacy in the livestock arena. Inspired by her older brother, she began her journey at a young age, participating in PeeWee shows at the Hamilton County Fair. Over the years, her passion evolved from showing pigs to excelling in showing lambs at prestigious Texas major livestock events.

“My older brother was my first inspiration,” Braylee shared. “I started by showing his pigs in the PeeWee show, and from there, my love for the livestock world grew.” By her sophomore year, Braylee shifted her focus to lambs, a transition that brought new challenges, hard work, and a deeper commitment to the craft.

Dedication Beyond the Ring

Braylee’s daily routine is a testament to her unwavering dedication. Her days are filled with working her lambs, running, treadmilling, raking pens, cleaning water buckets, washing, and feeding three times a day. Preparation for a show involves washing and shearing her lambs to ensure they look their best.

At the shows, her routine is just as rigorous. “I feed, water, wash, and fit the lambs for the show. Before stepping into the ring, I quickly get myself ready, then head in to give it my best. After the show, it’s back to washing, feeding, and making sure my lambs are comfortable with a fresh sock and blanket.”

Lessons Learned

For Braylee, showing livestock has been more than a hobby—it’s been a profound learning experience. “I’ve learned that hard work truly pays off,” she explained. “But more importantly, it takes a family to make it all happen.

Without the support of my mom, Misty Wilson, and my dad, Shea Wilson, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Braylee also credits her aunt and uncle, Keslie and Trenton Koether, for introducing her to the world of lamb showing. “They opened their barn to me and taught me everything I know. My entire family has played a huge role in helping me become the showman I am.”

Through livestock showing, Braylee has gained responsibility, patience, and an appreciation for the time and effort success requires. “You can’t expect to walk into the ring for the first time and win. It takes commitment—not just to the animals, but to this lifestyle.”

Goals and Dreams

As she prepares to graduate, Braylee has her sights set on achieving her highest placements yet at Texas major shows. Beyond the ring, she’s focused on excelling academically to prepare for her next chapter at Tarleton State University, where she plans to study nursing. Her long-term goal is to become a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, helping newborns in critical care. “I hope to graduate college, work in a hospital, and be stable enough to live independently and create a life of my own,” she said.

A Legacy of Determination

Braylee’s journey is a shining example of how hard work, family support, and perseverance can shape not just a successful showman but a determined and ambitious young adult. As she steps into the next phase of her life, there’s no doubt her lessons from the barn will continue to guide her toward a bright and fulfilling future.

Oglesby ISD A Year of Celebration, A Future of Promise

Oglesby Independent School District is readying for the upcoming school year with excitement and a united purpose. With the development and launch of a new mission and vision during the 2024-2025 school year, the district is charting a path forward that keeps its students at the heart of everything it does. The vision, “Students First – Inspire, Educate, Celebrate,” and the mission statement, “At OISD, we empower today’s learners to become tomorrow’s leaders,” encapsulate the spirit and ambition driving this tight-knit school community.

But before looking ahead, Oglesby ISD is taking a moment to do what their new mission promises—celebrate. This past year has been nothing short of extraordinary for the Tigers, as the district has stacked up achievements that reflect excellence in athletics, academics, and the arts.

Champions On and Off the Field

Athletic success was a defining theme of the year. Oglesby’s girls volleyball made their 4th consecutive playoff appearance and the Lady Tigers also sent several qualifiers to the area and regional track meets. They are working to soon add softball to the slate of athletic offerings.

Oglesby’s boys teams roared their way to district championships in football, basketball, track, and baseball—a rare sweep that

speaks to the dedication of the athletes and coaches who represent the Tiger spirit with pride.

In track and field, the Tigers went even further, clinching district and area championships and qualifying five student-athletes for the state meet. Their achievements were not just victories of speed or strength, but of grit, discipline, and unshakeable determination.

Academic Excellence Across Every Campus

Celebration isn't just reserved for sports. The district also recorded outstanding academic success, especially in UIL competitions across all grade levels. Oglesby Elementary, Junior High, and High School students made their mark in UIL academics, showcasing their talents in events ranging from science and math to speech and writing.

The high school in particular saw a historic year, with 23 students participating in UIL— the most in school history—and two advancing to Regionals. These milestones reflect a culture of academic ambition and a supportive environment where students are encouraged to reach for more.

Dual Credit, Real-World Experience

Celebrating student opportunity also means celebrating innova-

tion. Oglesby High School implemented the Tarleton Today program, allowing students to earn dual credit for both high school and college coursework. It’s a Tstep toward the future, giving students a head start on higher education and career readiness.

And the district is already seeing the fruits of that vision. One standout student is participating in the Temple BioScience program and will graduate high school with an associate degree already in hand—an incredible achievement that shows just how far Oglesby students can go when given the tools and trust to succeed.

Growing Leaders Through Ag and FFA

Oglesby’s tradition of excellence also extends to its FFA and Ag Mechanics programs, where students combine hands-on learning with leadership and competitive spirit. This year, students showcased their skills across multiple major events, earning top honors at every level.

At the Coryell County Show, Oglesby students exhibited a record number of 69 projects between Home Economic, Animal and Ag Mechanics Projects bringing in multiple Grand and Reserve Champion ribbons. Their success didn’t stop there with students participating in Ag Mechanics shows at the San Angelo Livestock Show, the San Antonio Livestock Show, and at the Hillsboro Ag Mechanics Show where students represented OISD in not only their project production, but their showmanship skills as well. Students competed well bringing home multiple blue ribbons from these shows with several students placing in their class earning welding equipment, gear, and other prizes.

Oglesby’s FFA and Ag students aren’t just building projects— they’re building futures.

A Stage for Artistic Talent

Oglesby ISD also had reason to celebrate in the fine arts. Two

students were selected to represent the district at the Region 12 Fine Arts Showcase, an honor that recognizes both artistic talent and dedication to creative expression. Whether it’s music, visual arts, or performance, these students shine a light on the importance of nurturing the whole child—not just academically or athletically, but artistically as well.

This next year the district is expanding their fine arts opportunities with the planned addition of a choir program.

A Culture of Celebration

With so many achievements to honor, Oglesby ISD’s mission to “celebrate” is not just a slogan—it’s a lived reality. Faculty, and community members alike have taken time throughout the year to highlight and uplift the accomplishments of their students. Pep rallies, recognition ceremonies, and community shout-outs are just a few ways the district keeps student success in the spotlight.

“Every achievement—big or small—matters here,” superintendent Shane Webb said. “When we say ‘Students First,’ we mean it. Celebrating their success reinforces our belief in them, and helps them believe in themselves.”

Looking Ahead

As the district sets its sights on the 2025-2026 school year, the new mission and vision will guide every step. “Inspire. Educate. Celebrate.” isn’t just an ideal—it’s a promise. A promise to keep students at the center, to fuel their dreams with knowledge, and to cheer them on every step of the way.

With a year like this one behind them, and a powerful new mission in place, the Tigers of Oglesby ISD aren’t just roaring—they’re soaring.

Hamilton ISD: A Year in Review - Celebrating 2024-2025 Milestones

As the 2024–2025 academic year comes to a close, Hamilton ISD has much to celebrate. From state titles and heartfelt tributes to student-led initiatives and long-standing traditions, this year has been marked by excellence, dedication, and Bulldog pride.

Athletics and Achievements

Hamilton Girls Cross Country continued their legacy of dominance, securing their third consecutive state title with an impressive team score of 37 points—41 points ahead of their nearest competitor. Presley Long led the pack with a fourth-place overall finish. Coaches Brandun Massingill and Chris Arledge guided the runners with mentorship, motivation, and strong leadership. Arledge completed his first year in Hamilton, while Massingill has led the team to four state titles. The Lady Dogs brought home the gold in 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Under Massingill’s guidance, the XC program has become a force to be reckoned with. He carries the torch from the legendary Mona Gloff, who built the program and won five back-to-back titles from 1992–1996.

Football made school history as the Bulldogs powered through a stellar 14-1 season and reached the State Semifinals. This remarkable run brought the entire community together, week after week, as the team dominated the field. The Bulldogs showed grit and determination all season long. The record-breaking journey came to a heartbreaking end on December 12, as the Stamford Bulldogs defeated Hamilton 28–13. Nevertheless, the season was a landmark achievement that energized the community and inspired future athletes.

Track and Field athletes also shone brightly at the State Meet. The Boys' 4x400m Relay team (Morgan Henkes, Myles Henkes, Pierce Summers, and Colton DeLaGarza) brought home the bronze medal, while the Girls' 4x400m Relay team (Presley Long, Avery

Arledge, Emma Ensor, and Anna Pearcy) placed an impressive fifth. Individually, Presley Long earned bronze in the 3200m and placed fourth in the 1600m. Kate Lengefeld and Anna Pearcy also delivered strong performances, while Alvia Eanes and the Boys' 4x200m Relay team secured top-10 finishes.

The Girls Varsity Golf team achieved an outstanding milestone by finishing 9th at the state level—a proud moment for the program. With 241 schools competing in the 2A Girls Golf division, placing in the top ten is a true testament to the team’s talent, hard work, and dedication.

Academics, Arts, and Agriculture

The Range Judging team showcased remarkable skill at the National FFA Land, Range, and Homesite Competition. Each team member placed in the top ten nationally, led by Brayden Bartley in 2nd place. Close behind were Lawson Yates in 7th, Colter Johnson in 8th, and Bret Bauman in 9th. Ag teacher and sponsor Terry Baize has guided the team over the years with extensive knowledge and dedicated support.

Hamilton’s theatrical talent also took the spotlight. The Junior High won District in One Act Play with their production #Viral, and the High School advanced to Regionals with Dearly Departed. Drama enthusiast Katiee Crowson directed the JH One Act Play program, while Melissa Craig, Lu Burks, and Betsy Killian brought Dearly Departed to life with their direction.

The Fighting Bulldog Band gave a strong performance at the UIL Contest, earning ratings of 2-2-1. Their show, titled Out of Darkness, featured music by Iron Maiden, Disturbed, Metallica, and Holst. The theme reflected the personal struggles people face in life and the triumph of reaching the light at the end.

5th Grade Titanic Dinner 2025 Powder Puff

The Hamilton High School Cosmetology program, led by Danna Farmer, celebrated a major achievement this year as several students completed the program and earned their licenses. Congratulations to Angeline Lilley, Lainey Lane, Clementine Cooper, and Letty Gonzalez for passing their exams and taking a big step toward their careers! Throughout the year, the program continued to thrive. Students attended premier hair shows in New York City, showcased their skills at state competitions, and gave back through the heartwarming Princess for a Day event. This annual fundraiser allows Cosmo students to pamper local girls and treat them to a magical photo shoot in front of a royal backdrop.

Traditions and Heartfelt Moments

Hamilton ISD also upheld cherished traditions. The 5th Grade Titanic Dinner once again transported students to the era of the grand ship, complete with period dress and a four-course meal prepared by parents. This tradition, started years ago by 5th-grade teacher Barbara Johnson, has become a rite of passage for students.

Student Recognition and Campus Life

In student life, milestones and celebrations abounded. Dee Dovalina was crowned 2024 Homecoming Queen, while Martha Olvera earned the title of 2024 Band Sweetheart. Seniors Britley Balzen and Owen Tyson were voted Mr. and Miss HHS 2025, and junior high students enjoyed the Spring Bling Dance, where class favorites were honored.

In a thrilling twist, the Junior Class pulled off an exciting upset in the annual Powderpuff football game, defeating the reigning champion Seniors. A beloved tradition, the game flips the script: girls take the field, football players serve as coaches, and classmates step in as announcers. This year’s showdown was especially entertaining, with Senior Kase Kunkel and Junior Grant Bauman providing hilarious commentary that kept the crowd laughing all night.

A Look Ahead

The school community came together in April to celebrate longtime ESL teacher Misti Polster’s retirement. The surprise tribute from students and families reflected the profound impact she made throughout her career. Many local families have felt the dedication and passion for learning that Misti poured into the ESL program.

Teacher Maury Heers and her 8th-grade students spread kindness through the “Adopt a Grandparent” project, delivering care packages and handmade blankets to local nursing home residents.

In a crucial step forward, the 2025 Bond Election passed, paving the way for upgraded facilities, enhanced technology, and improved safety measures district-wide. This development promises a brighter, more secure future for all Hamilton ISD students.

As the year ends, Hamilton ISD celebrates not just its achievements, but the character, compassion, and community spirit that define its students and staff. Here's to another remarkable year in the books—and to even greater accomplishments ahead.

In the small West Texas town of Melvin, Jacoby Cafe stands as a thriving hub of community, creativity, and country charm. What began as a humble effort to feed the employees of Jacoby Feed and Seed has since blossomed into a fullservice restaurant, catering business, and so much more — proving that even in the smallest towns, big ideas can flourish.

Originally created as a way to keep the team fueled during long days at the feed store, Jacoby Cafe quickly gained popularity beyond its intended purpose. Word spread about the hearty meals, the warm hospitality, and especially the homemade desserts — many of which are based on cherished old Jacoby family recipes. From classic pies to decadent cakes, the desserts became a standout feature, helping shape the cafe’s identity as more than just a place to grab a bite.

Today, the cafe offers a full menu that includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and yes — it’s also home to the coldest beer in Melvin. Whether you're a local rancher grabbing coffee before sunrise, a traveler passing through for a hot meal, or a group celebrating in the party room (which seats up to 60 guests), Jacoby Cafe has something for everyone.

The catering side of the business has also taken on a life of its own. Known for quality, consistency, and a homemade touch, Jacoby’s catering is a popular choice for weddings, reunions, corporate events, and community gatherings. Their team works hard to deliver not just great food, but a dependable experience that reflects the values at the heart of everything they do.

But Jacoby Cafe isn’t just about food. In true Texas fashion, the folks behind the operation aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty — literally. The family-run business has expanded to include a tire shop and excavation services. It’s all part of a broader mission to serve the community in

every way possible and to never stop looking for the next opportunity.

That entrepreneurial spirit has become part of what makes Jacoby Cafe — and the broader Jacoby brand — so special. In a town like Melvin, versatility is key, and the team behind the scenes continues to find new ways to evolve and grow while keeping the heart of their business grounded in tradition and service.

Whether you’re coming for a slice of pie, a catered feast, or just a cold beer and conversation, Jacoby Cafe is the kind of place that makes you feel like family. It's a one-stop shop for food, fun, and the kind of down-home Texas grit that keeps rural communities strong.

So next time you find yourself near Melvin, make the stop. You’ll find more than just a meal — you’ll find a story, a legacy, and a little bit of everything.

Complement your retirement plan with a health savings plan for the things Medicare doesn’t cover.

Retirement is an exciting time and a new phase of life worth celebrating with family and friends; however, planning for retirement can sometimes bring uncertainty. Things like changes in your personal life, market fluctuations and uncertainty around Social Security can raise questions in even the most detailed plan. Although Medicare covers a variety of medical expenses, it isn’t the all-encompassing healthcare coverage many people assume. Fortunately, you can leverage the benefits of a health savings account (HSA) to accumulate additional savings for medical and healthcare-related expenses.

An HSA can help cover healthcare costs that Medicare doesn’t, along with dental, hearing and vision expenses. With comparable – and, in some cases, better – perks than a 401(k) or IRA, your HSA can help you save and prepare. Who is eligible for an HSA and what are some other requirements?

• Anyone with a high-deductible health policy can qualify for an HSA. It is not limited to employees.

• There are no income limits affecting eligibility.

• You do not need earned income to contribute to an HSA.

• The HSA belongs to you, not to your employer. If you have a qualified highdeductible health policy through your employer but your employer does not offer an HSA, you can still open an HSA.

• An HSA can be set up through any qualified trustee or custodian.

• You may sign up for and contribute to an HAS as long as you have not yet enrolled in Medicare Part A or B. Once you enroll in Medicare, however, you may no longer make contributions to your HSA.

An HSA is a tax-advantaged medical savings account that allows you to set money aside and withdraw funds to pay for qualified medical expenses. HSA accounts are unique in that they are triple tax advantaged. Contributions to an HSA are tax deductible, earnings are tax free, and distributions from HSA accounts are tax and penalty free if the funds are used to pay for or reimburse yourself for qualified medical expenses.

HSAs can be especially useful because they are not “use it or lose it” accounts. Unlike flexible spending accounts, unused HSA dollars roll over every year.

The annual amount you can contribute to an HSA depends on whether you have single or family health coverage, if you have continual coverage throughout the year, and if you are eligible to make a catch-up contribution (for age 55 and older). For 2025, HSA contribution limits are $4,300 for an individual or $8,550 for a family. Individuals 55 and older can contribute an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution for a total of $5,300 per year.

Distributions that are used for other purposes beyond qualified medical expenses are subject to tax and a 20% penalty if you are under age 65. If you are 65 or older, you can use your HSA much like a 401(k) and withdraw funds for any purpose but will have to pay income taxes on withdrawals made for nonmedical purposes.

If you or your spouse have creditable health insurance from a group employer, then you could consider delaying Medicare enrollment and continuing to contribute to your HSA, even once you turn 65. Something to consider is that if you decide to delay enrolling in Medicare beyond age 65, when you do eventually enroll, Medicare will automatically give you six months of retroactive benefits. This means if you decide to delay enrollment, you’ll need to stop contributing to an HSA six months before you do decide to enroll in Medicare. If you do delay enrollment, this may also impact how much you can contribute in that final year, depending on when in the year you eventually enroll.

Your decision to delay may depend on the benefits coverage between Medicare and your employer, plan costs or your current tax picture and the tax advantages you gain by contributing to an HSA. No two individuals face the same situation when it comes to their healthcare benefits. Depending on your personal circumstances, goals and budget, an HSA may help you to maximize your benefits. Charles Michael "Mike" Lovell truly embodied the sentiment, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve.” – Martin Luther King Jr. Mike served the Hamilton community in countless ways throughout his life. He was a member of the Hamilton Community A&M Club, played a central role in the Billingsley-Wilson Goodfellow Fund, served on the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, and contributed to many other local initiatives. While he was a familiar, smiling face at MC Bank, he was equally known as a key figure in the Hamilton Civic Theatre. Mike served on the Theatre’s board and participated in 47 productions since its inception in 1984.

Mike was always willing to do whatever it took to make a show successful. He was a steady presence amid the whirlwind energy of children’s summer productions such as Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, and Charlotte’s Web. He embraced any role on stage during regular productions—even if it meant dropping his pants to reveal fish boxers in Farce of Nature, dressing as a strawberry in Honky Tonk Hissyfit, or portraying the passionate Uncle Aubrey chasing Mama Doll in Red Velvet Cake Wars.

Mike Lovell’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication, joyful service, and heartfelt community spirit. Whether making audiences laugh from the stage, quietly managing details behind the scenes, or lending a helping hand through civic organizations, Mike gave his time and talents generously. His presence enriched countless lives in Hamilton, leaving behind not only cherished memories but also an enduring example of what it means to lead with kindness, humor, and a servant’s heart. Though he may be gone, the impact he made will continue to resonate throughout the community he loved so deeply.

2024 Texas Heritage Songwriters Association Hall of Fame Terry McBride Lampasas

Tried & true Texan, Music City hitmaker, frontman, and multi-instrumentalist are just a few of the monikers Terry McBride has worn in his decades-long chart-topping career.

A Lampasas, TX native, McBride spent his teenage summers on the road with his dad, the late Dale McBride, who was a recording artist with several Billboard charted singles. Terry traveled as part of his father’s band for three years before moving on to Austin to further pursue his musical career.

In 1989, Terry left Austin for Nashville where the songs he had been writing found their way to MCA president Tony Brown, who would later go on to sign Terry to a recording contract with the label. The group McBride & Ride was formed and the trio racked up several top five singles including “Sacred Ground,” a # 1 single in 1992.

McBride received two million air awards for his writing credits for “Just One Night” and “Going Out Of My Mind”. During that time, the band received CMA and ACM nominations for vocal group of the year before disbanding in 1995.

After his run with McBride & The Ride, Terry began to focus most of his attention on songwriting. Through the years his songs have been recorded by Garth Brooks, George Strait, Reba McEntire, Hank Williams Jr, Ronnie Dunn, Kix Brooks, Alan Jackson, Cole Swindell, Trace Adkins, Easton Corbin, Kenny Rogers, John Anderson, Cody Johnson and many others.

Terry has had over 25 songs recorded by GRAMMY-winning duo Brooks & Dunn, including thirteen singles, four #1 songs, and five top-five singles, including the duo’s fastest-rising final #1 single, “Play Some-

thing Country,” was written by McBride and Dunn. Terry also co-wrote and produced the duo’s final single, “Honky Tonk Stomp,” featuring rock icon Billy Gibbons. Other notable singles include “Proud of The House,” “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” featuring Reba McEntire, and the mega-hit “If You See Him/If You See Her,” also with Reba.

Terry continues to tour as a solo artist along with the recently reunited, McBride & The Ride, who recently released new music for the first time in nearly two decades.

Texas grit, never-ending talent, and a smiling personality, of a man who never met a stranger, make up the incredibly prolific career of Terry McBride that spans 4 decades with hundreds of cuts and multiple #1 songs.

“Love Me Some Texas” Texas Songwriters Hall of Fame Inductee and Recording Artist

Terry McBride’s love for his state runs deep and echoes through his country hits and life. McBride is a multifaceted artist who has positively impacted the world with his inspiring musical legacy, songwriting success, and dedication to family and community.

Melodic tunes graced McBride’s childhood country home in Lampasas, Texas. He was blessed to have legendary country music singer Dale McBride as his father. McBride’s talent traces back to great-grandmother Ma Thomas, who lived to be 102. Ma Thomas taught McBride’s father to play rhythmic classics like Little Brown Jug. McBride’s father, in turn, shared his musical passion with his son, Terry McBride, gifting him his first guitar at the age of nine. As McBride’s father was often gone, McBride embraced the guitar and music to win his father’s attention.

McBride’s father had an office attached to the house where many musicians, clad inconspicuously behind dark shades, would come and go daily when McBride’s father was in town to create and record music there. This intrigued McBride, luring him into the music industry. Thanks to the support of his artistic mother and helpful grandparents who lived next door, McBride quickly learned to play the guitar while attending grade school. McBride’s father had mixed

emotions about him joining the music industry, making him work very hard for it. His father’s expectations did not lessen even after he earned a place in his father’s band during the summers of Terry’s eighth and ninth-grade years. To McBride’s dismay, when the summer ended, he was still expected to quit the band and return to school.

Throughout high school, McBride played current hits in a popular local country band. Since he was just up the road from Austin, Texas, he often jumped in his little Chevy Chevelle to hear his favorite artists. The music scene took off in Austin in the 1970s, with music from Wylie Hubbard, Rusty Wier, Doug Sahm, and Gary P. Nunn inspiring McBride.

After high school, McBride joined his father’s band full-time as a singing bass player and the tour bus driver. With his father’s band, he toured Texas and opened shows for Ronnie Milsap, Roy Clark, Johnny Dunkin, Rosie Flores, Barbara Mandrell, and Delbert McClinton. Desiring to focus more on songwriting, McBride landed a writing job with Bill Carter and Ruth Ellsworth, who opened for Stevie Ray Vaughan.

In 1989, McBride found his way to producer Tony Brown, his personal idol, in Nashville, Tennessee. MCA president Tony Brown

invited McBride to a holiday New Year’s Party to coax him into creating a new band. With Brown’s encouragement, Ray Herndon, Billy Thomas, and McBride formed a band called McBride and the Ride. Their 3-part vocalization created an incredible harmonic blend, superseding their instrumental talent. In five years, the band recorded four studio albums, charted over ten Billboard Hot Country Songs singles, and received ACM and CMA nominations for vocal group of the year. Tony Brown saw potential with McBride and signed him to a recording contract with the label. McBride’s lasting friendship with Brown has greatly impacted McBride’s musical career. McBride shares, “Tony Brown is an amazing person. He has been a friend all these years! You don’t find that a lot in this business. It’s a special trait, and it is something about him that I really admire.”

As McBride and the Ride’s journey was ending, McBride started writing songs for other country and rock artists. His first cut after the band dismembered was for John Anderson, which opened doors for him to write for even more artists, including George Strait, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Kix Brooks, and Brooks & Dunn, among others.

McBride was invited to join Brooks & Dunn musicians Ronnie Dunn and Kix Brooks on a 15-day tour where McBride both performed and wrote ten songs with the band. The tour marked the beginning of a 13-year-long journey where McBride, Dunn, and Brooks traveled the country playing and writing music. McBride played the bass guitar for the band for three years and switched to solely writing for the remaining time. McBride reflects, “They treated me well and are still on top of the world.” Together, they recorded over 25 songs, of which five were top-five and four were number-one single hits. This year, McBride was inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association Hall of Fame, which recognizes songwriters in Texas for their outstanding musical contributions.

day charity jet ski ride from Nashville to Memphis, culminating in an epic live concert. Navigating across the Tennessee River was no recreational jaunt. While it was an adrenaline-packed adventure, it was also grueling. The path was not meant to be crossed, but these artistic daredevils, McBride, Brooks & Dunn, live on the world’s edge, creating anthems etched in the riverbanks that ripple across the philanthropic landscape. Arriving in Memphis to greet the eager crowd, Brooks & Dunn, a little saddle sore, still gave it their all, in song and heart. Their tunes hit a chord with the nation which raised over $100,000. This was one long journey McBride doesn’t wish to repeat, but he will forever treasure the experience and his contribution to others.

McBride also enjoys mentoring young songwriters and singers who aspire to be successful in the music industry. He knows that it’s a harsh field, so his advice to young artists includes, “This is a business where you have to be a self-motivated person. You’ve got to be disciplined. You’ve got to show up and do the work. No one is going to do it for you. You’ve got to get in the room with someone and pour your heart out. It is an interesting job as a songwriter. If you are not a people person, it can work against you.”

Despite his busy life, McBride still managed to prioritize serving others. McBride and his wife, Cathy McBride, have been married for 43 years and have three talented children. McBride recognizes the toll this profession takes on families, and he greatly appreciates Cathy’s strength, security, and support. Together, they chose to serve children and families at St. Jude by bringing awareness of the children at St. Jude’s needs to the community and fellow artists. The McBride family’s financial support, gathering other’s aid, spotlighting the needs of the children, and sharing their talents make a tangible difference in the lives of families affected by Leukemia. Imagine jet skiing around 500 miles straight to support a local charity. McBride supported Brooks & Dunn as they hosted a two-

“Who you surround yourself with makes a big difference. You can be pulled and pushed in a lot of directions. You’ve got to have a sense of who you are, what you want, and who you want to be, or you can get off track easily in this business.”

McBride says there are more opportunities for songwriters today than ever before. For example, Red Dirt Charts, the Texas Music Association, and the T3 Chart have significantly enabled songwriters. People are always asking McBride, “How do you make it?” He answers, “If you’re in Texas, you have a great opportunity because there is live entertainment or something happening in just about every community. That’s a great place to start…See who is doing what you want to do. Is there anyone else writing in your community? Is there anyone else playing music live? You have got to get out and expose yourself a bit and you’ve got to meet some people. The music business is a big part of that. It is a big part of networking. Meeting people, knowing people, like-minded folks that have the same interests and desires and dreams that you do. If you meet with enough of those people, you might connect with a couple of them, and it could lead to something. That is the way that this business works.”

Terry McBride is a true gem of the Lone Star State. His charismatic charm, hearty laughter, generosity, and unforgettable country melodies are loved by many Texans and will continue to echo through the hearts of those who this Texas legend has touched.

LAMKIN, TEXAS

The Town That Refused to Be Forgotten

If you blink, you might miss it.

Lamkin, Texas, is little more than a bend along State Highway 36 these days—a scattering of homes, an old cemetery, a historical marker whispering stories few travelers stop to hear. But to those who once called it home, Lamkin was—and remains—a place alive with memories, stitched together by the grit, laughter, and hard work that defined small-town life in Central Texas.

Founded in the 1870s near the banks of the Leon River, Lamkin was named for George Lamkin, who donated the land that would form the heart of the fledgling community. Like many towns of its time, it grew slowly but steadily, shaped by the rhythm of the seasons and the determination of the people who worked the land. By 1884, Lamkin had established a post office, a sign of permanence in a region still defined by rough trails and wide-open spaces. Families raised cattle and cotton under the big Texas sky, and children splashed in the Leon River on sweltering summer days. It was a life built on faith, family, and community.

A flood in 1908 nearly washed Lamkin off the map, forcing the town to move half a mile north to higher ground. But Lamkin, like its people, was resilient. New roots were laid, and new dreams grew. In 1913, the arrival of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway— known locally as the "Cotton Belt"—brought new energy and opportunity. Goods and people flowed in and out of town, and for a

time, Lamkin thrived.

Three general stores lined the main street, alongside a bustling drugstore, a blacksmith shop, and a cotton gin that processed the fruits of local fields. Farmers hitched their wagons in town on Saturdays, families gathered at church socials, and kids raced barefoot through dusty streets. Travelers passed through, too— including, according to legend, the notorious Bonnie and Clyde, who once gassed up at Jackson’s service station before speeding off into infamy.

Yet, as quickly as prosperity came, it was just as quickly snatched away. In 1922, a devastating fire swept through the heart of Lamkin, razing nearly every business to the ground. Though a few tried to rebuild, the loss was too great. Without its businesses and with the railroad’s gradual decline, Lamkin’s once-bright future began to dim.

The population, which had peaked near 300, slowly slipped away. By 1929, Lamkin was a town in retreat. Through the decades, a few hearty souls stayed, tending to their homes and their memories. From the 1970s through the early 2000s, Lamkin maintained a quiet population of about 88 people. Today, fewer than 50 residents remain—guardians of a town that refuses to completely fade.

But Lamkin isn’t just a place. It's a feeling, a collection of moments frozen in time, forever vivid in the hearts of those who lived them.

"We always had parties in the building without a roof," Louise Tatum Kunkel remembered fondly. "I remember having MYF hayrides with Mr. Sills pulling the trailer. On one of those rides, Doug lost his tooth, and we had to stop and dig through the hay to find it. I remember spending nights with Brenda Gail and her mom, making chicken-fried deer steak or enchiladas."

It wasn’t just about food and fun; it was about community—the way everyone looked out for each other, the way traditions wove families together across generations.

Ella Faye Stephens’ memories are tied to the very walls of her family’s home: "How many of you Lamkin people knew that I grew up in a Lamkin home?" she shared. "My dad bought the old Lamkin teacherage house from the Hamilton school system and moved it to our farm on the river. He completely redid the house, and it is still the cute cozy home today that I grew up in. I can remember Mr. Stringer, the school superintendent, coming out to see the progress. My dad was an awesome carpenter, and Mr. Stringer loved visiting the farm."

Life in Lamkin wasn’t always easy, but it was rich in ways that modern life sometimes forgets.

"Dale Sills and I rode bikes all over those dirt roads," Glenn Lee recalled. "I hunted squirrels down around the Leon River, picked pecans in the fall, hoed peanuts, moved pipe to water peanuts, and did odd jobs for local residents. I miss those days."

The echoes of childhood laughter still ripple through Lamkin’s memories. Evenings brought their own special magic.

"We used to have dances and play spin-the-bottle," Valrie Thedford said with a smile. "We made our own fun, dancing barefoot in the grass and spinning that old bottle around under the stars. It was simple, but it was wonderful."

Those simple joys—the dances, the hayrides, the squirrel hunts and peanut harvests—form the soul of Lamkin, more enduring than buildings or businesses.

Today, if you stand quietly by the Greenbrier Cemetery or along the rustling grass by the highway, you might hear it—the echo of wagon wheels, the strains of music drifting from a roofless building, the sound of laughter carried on the Texas wind. Lamkin isn’t just a near-forgotten town. It’s a testament to resilience, to the beauty of small things, to the stories that live on even when the world moves on.

Lamkin may be a whisper now, but to those who remember, it’s still a song worth hearing.

Dining out can feel like a minefield when you're trying to stay healthy—but it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning and a few smart strategies, you can enjoy your favorite restaurant meals while still sticking to your health goals. Save this guide for the next time you’re planning a meal out!

1. Plan Ahead

Before you even step into the restaurant, do your homework.

• Check the menu online so you're not caught off guard or forced to make a rushed decision.

• Look for meals that are grilled, baked, or roasted—these cooking methods are typically lower in fat and calories than fried or creamy options.

2. Prioritize Protein

Protein is your best friend when eating out.

• Build your meal around lean proteins like chicken, steak, turkey, or fish.

• Protein helps keep you full longer and supports fat loss, making it a smart centerpiece for any meal.

3. Watch the Extras

It’s often the add-ons that can sabotage an otherwise healthy dish.

• Ask for sauces and dressings on the side to control how much you’re actually eating.

• Go light on cheese, heavy dressings, and fried toppings, which can sneak in extra calories and fat.

4. Practice Portion Control

Restaurant portions are famously oversized.

• Eat slowly and tune into your hunger cues—sometimes your body tells you it’s done before your plate is empty.

• If the portion looks big, ask for a to-go box up front and set aside half for later.

5. Make Smart Swaps

You don’t always have to skip your favorite meals—just tweak them.

• Trade fries for steamed veggies or a side salad to boost your fiber and nutrient intake.

• Opt for water, sparkling water, or diet drinks instead of sugary beverages to save a significant chunk of calories.

6. Want to Indulge? No Problem!

It’s okay to treat yourself—balance is key.

• If dinner is your time to indulge, eat lighter meals earlier in the day to give yourself some wiggle room.

• Try a lean, high-protein, low-carb breakfast and lunch, so you can enjoy your evening meal without guilt.

7. Mindful > Perfect

You don’t have to be flawless to be successful.

• Focus on being intentional rather than perfect.

• Enjoy the experience, stay consistent most of the time, and you’ll keep making progress toward your goals.

Eating out doesn’t have to derail your diet. With these simple, effective tips, you can enjoy your meal, stay social, and still stick to your health plan. So go ahead—book that reservation, and eat with confidence!

Have you ever had to plan a funeral after a loved one has passed away? If so, you understand just how overwhelming the experience can be. In the midst of deep grief, you're faced with making difficult decisions—often within a short time frame and under emotional stress. From choosing services to managing costs, the entire process can feel daunting, expensive, and time-consuming.

But what if there was a way to ease that burden—not only for yourself but for your loved ones?

That’s exactly what Sara Jo Poynter at Scott’s Funeral Home offers through pre-planning services. With her compassionate guidance, you can make thoughtful decisions in advance and ensure your final wishes are clearly understood and carried out. The process is simple, yet highly informative, and takes place in a one-on-one setting at Scott’s Funeral Home, where Sara Jo walks you through every step with care and clarity.

One of the greatest benefits of pre-planning is financial protection. When you make arrangements ahead of time, you’re “locked in” to today’s pricing. That means you can freeze the cost of your funeral services at today’s rates—no matter how much prices may rise in the future. It’s a smart investment that spares your family unexpected expenses later on.

Beyond the financial relief, pre-planning also allows you to personalize your service. Whether you have specific music, readings, or other meaningful touches in mind, planning in advance ensures your final farewell reflects your life and values. It also lifts the heavy burden of guesswork from your family—giving them comfort in knowing they’re honoring your true wishes.

Another important aspect of the pre-planning program is flexibility. Plans are fully transferrable between funeral homes, and even state to state, offering peace of mind if your life circumstances change or if you move to a new area. You can rest easy knowing that your arrangements will go with you, wherever life may lead.

Meeting with Sara Jo is not just about logistics—it’s about love. Choosing to pre-plan is a deeply considerate act for your family. It’s a way to shield them from additional stress during a time of sorrow, and to offer them space to grieve and celebrate your life without the distraction of urgent planning decisions.

If you’re ready to take that first step, Sara Jo is here to help. With warmth and professionalism, she will walk you through the process, discuss available payment options, and ensure your experience is smooth and respectful.

Please consider pre-planning as a gift to those who love you. It’s a simple step today that can make a world of difference tomorrow.

FOLLOW ME

Growing up, I was always told, “You’re a leader.” And to be honest, although the statement was meant to be complimentary, it came with a lot of weight and unnecessary pressure—most of which I placed on myself.

Over the years, I set unrealistic expectations for myself. I remember being a full-time college student, working a fulltime job, holding a part-time job, and still leading in student ministry, young adults ministry, and on the praise team. Oh— and let’s not forget trying to squeeze in a social life somewhere. And even then, I still needed to make time for Jesus.

I spent most of my life calling this “do it all” mentality leadership and ministry. I’d tell friends and family, “This is what it means to live a life surrendered to Christ.” But in reality, it was a setup for a mental breakdown—and maybe even a stroke.

A few days ago, I had dinner with a friend I hadn’t seen in a long time. As we talked, I began to open up about my current stressors—ones that, honestly, far outweigh what I dealt with in college. I explained how much I was doing and how everything felt like it rested solely on my shoulders. I told him I was at my breaking point.

He looked me in the face and said with authority, “You don’t know how to follow.”

At first, I brushed it off. Well, duh, I thought. I don’t know how to follow—I’m the leader.

But he repeated it again.

And this time, it hit my spirit.

It’s rare for someone to boldly call out a flaw in me, but his words echoed through the night like a ringing in my ears. In desperation, I asked God to speak. I tried to rationalize my way out of it—telling myself, “I’m a disciple, and if I’m a disciple, then I’m a follower of Christ. So my friend must be wrong.” Still, I needed God’s voice.

And He spoke—gently. He asked me: “If you’re leading, then who are you following?”

That question cut deep. In that moment, the Holy Spirit began to reprove and correct me, reminding me: If I’m carrying all the responsibility, I’m leaving nothing for Him to carry.

In our social media-driven world, we’re obsessed with how many followers we have. But if God isn’t first in someone’s life, where exactly are they leading us?

We live in a culture where following is popular. So why not choose to follow Jesus?

I encourage you to leave everything behind daily. Deny yourself the pleasures of this world and let Christ lead as you follow. Let’s live as true disciples—not expecting Him to follow us but choosing daily to follow Him.

It is in doing this that I can truly say: I am about my Father’s business.

Here are a few scriptures passages to reflect on and study for the next few weeks: Matthew 6:33, 1 Corinthians 11:1, Luke 2:49, John 17:21-23

I When They Don’t Choose You Back...

’ve had this topic on my mind for quite some time now. To write about it requires me to stop and deeply reflect on what I thought then and what I know now. I have struggled to formulate my thoughts and pick just the right words that will shed light on hard realities, yet not discourage anyone from stepping into the calling of adoption.

The excitement of adoption is very similar to the excitement of childbirth. When discussing childbirth with a young lady who one day dreams about being a mom, the conversation is usually centered around the JOY that comes when the doctor lays that sweet baby in your arms. Rarely do we discuss the immense pain of labor endured to get to that moment of joy. Adoption is much the same way. Adoption agencies center their presentations around the JOY of calling a child your own. There is indescribable JOY that overwhelms couples the day they sign the adoption papers.

A little over half of adoptive couples who start the journey do so because they cannot have a biological child of their own . Many of these couples know the pain leading up to adoption; they’ve endured years of trying to conceive only to be disappointed time and time again. They know the agony of counting days and aligning cycles. They understand the strain that fertility treatments createboth financially and emotionally.

When you finally bring your baby home - no matter if it came by adoption or birth - we think the pain is over. The hard part is behind us. Parents enthusiastically set out to conquer the task before them: to raise up a good independent person who positively contributes to society knowing they a) belong, b)are loved, and c) are CHOSEN. We see movies about adoption and hear adoptees say, “I never felt like I belonged” or “I always felt different from everyone else; something was just missing.” So, adoptive parents set out to love and spoil the possible voids away. Believers raise their children up in church and teach them about Jesus praying that one day their child will choose to make faith in Jesus Christ their own foundation. What if you loved hard, spoiled them more than you should,

From the eyes of an adoptive parent

taught them about Jesus, and it wasn’t enough? What if your child grows up and seeks out a biological family that is not healthy for them to be around? What if every action your child has screams “YOU WERE NEVER ENOUGH FOR ME?”

What if you spent a lifetime choosing your child and he or she doesn’t choose you back?

Nobody talks about that pain. Nobody talks about the immense GRIEF an adoptive parent feels when they’ve given everything they know to give and it can’t fix what’s broken inside. Truthfully, this possibility is not exclusive to adopted children; there are plenty of biological children that can fall into the same category. Parents MOURN the loss of a child’s presence; they mourn the loss of dreams as life know longer looks like they thought it would; they mourn as they watch their child learn lessons the hard way. Knowing no one is perfect, parents QUESTION whether they did something so wrong to cause a child to walk away from them. They FEAR getting hurt again and again. They fear for the safety of themselves and other siblings if they let the child walk back into their lives. They wonder what kind of LOVE the child needs; tender love, hard love? Will love ever be enough? Parents HURT. Parents like to pretend they are unbreakable. They’ll never admit to their child that he or she hurt their feelings because that may drive a deeper wedge, right? And though they may never say so, there is a smidge of anger. Angry that the sacrifices made as a parent so their child could have a better life appear forgotten or taken for-granted. Angry that the child walks back to the very things the parent spent years rescuing them from. Devastated that it appears the child is rejecting every value, every moral, and every ounce of faith you worked tirelessly to instill. It’s like a slap in the face. A demotion from parent to glorified babysitter.

It’s hard when you choose a child and they won’t choose you back. I’ve met and spoken with plenty of adoptees that never had a problem fully embracing their adoptive family, but I also see parents everyday with hidden grief. It’s real. And if it’s you, you are not alone.

About the author: I have dedicated my life to sharing our story so that others might know that they are not alone. I believe transparency helps people. I will share my deepest joys, but I won’t tell you it was all rainbows and unicorns along the journey. The foster care and adoption road involves some steep and treacherous climbs, but when you reach the summit, the views are priceless! I look forward to sharing tips, tricks, and lessons learned for those families walking, or those who are considering embarking, on this same journey!

She says, "Light Language is a coded frequency experienced as sound or symbols. The light codes speak directly to the physical, emotional, spiritual and etheric body. They purposely bypass the mental body. The source of it is what most identified as aspects of God, Source or Creation. It is all the same really. We are all aspects of God, Source or Creation. Everything that is alive is an aspect of that Creation. It often sounds different from person to person who is transmitting it. Some will say that they are “channeling” a particular star being or group. My understanding is that I am transmitting versus channeling and that the way it sounds depends on the frequency being transmitted and who I am transmitting it for. That could also say who I

am receiving it for. It is all the same really. During the gallery we will discuss light language and how it affects everything." $33 energy exchange, or your ticket is included in your weekend retreat package at OpenHeartsSanctuary.com
