Tom Smallwood’s journey into the world of printing began unexpectedly during his senior year of high school in 1986. At just 17 years old, he took a work program class that allowed him to leave school early and work afternoons at Advertising and Marketing Associates (AMA). It was here, on an old Harris Printing Press, that Smallwood’s passion for the printing industry was ignited. Though he initially left the company to pursue a degree in Automotive Technology at Texas State Technical College, he soon realized that his true calling was back at AMA, prompting his return to the industry he loved.

Smallwood's second stint at AMA saw him taking on various roles in the bindery department, where he mastered the operation of finishing machines, including cutters, folders, drills, and punches. His expertise continued to grow, eventually leading him to a supervisory position in a company producing vinyl products. But the printing industry, and AMA

in particular, called him back once more. In 1994, Smallwood returned to AMA, this time with a renewed focus and determination to climb the ranks.

His dedication and skill quickly led him to the pressroom, where he became the lead pressman on a 4-color, 40” Heidelberg Sheetfed Press. This role became the heart of his career, allowing him to collaborate with artists, prepress personnel, and finishing experts to bring creative visions to life on paper. His work earned numerous awards in graphic contests, showcasing his commitment to quality and excellence.

Over the years, Smallwood continued to advance within AMA, eventually becoming the Pressroom Supervisor and later the Plant Manager. In these roles, he was instrumental in transitioning the company into the digital age, overseeing the implementation of a state-of-the-art Digital Variable Print operation. This innovation landed AMA a national account with a major legal insurance company,

further solidifying the company's reputation for excellence.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges to AMA. As business slowed, Smallwood found himself working with a skeleton crew, uncertain of the company’s future. When the owners of AMA decided to close the print shop to focus on their core business, Smallwood was faced with a difficult decision. Initially hesitant to take on the responsibility of ownership, he spent time in prayer and reflection, seeking guidance on how to move forward.

With the support of colleagues and friends, Smallwood ultimately decided to take the leap and become the new owner of AMA Graphics. His leadership and vision led the company through a successful transition to a new location, preserving the legacy of a business with over 60 years of history.

Under Smallwood's ownership, AMA Graphics continues to build on its rich heritage, offering both commercial offset and digital printing services. The company prides itself on its high-quality work, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to bringing clients' visions to life. Whether

through large-scale offset printing for magazines, brochures, and catalogs, or the flexibility and customization of digital printing for short-run projects, AMA Graphics delivers exceptional results.

In addition to its printing services, AMA Graphics provides comprehensive mailing solutions, including advanced targeting, address validation, and USPS-approved postal presorting. As a partner of the USPS Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) program, AMA helps clients reach every household in specific areas without the need for a mailing list, offering a cost-effective way to expand their reach.

Smallwood's dedication to quality and customer service remains at the core of AMA Graphics. From initial consultations to final delivery, the company ensures a seamless experience for every client, maintaining the high standards that have been the hallmark of AMA Graphics for decades. As Smallwood leads the company into a new era, his journey from a young pressman to the owner of a legacy business is a testament to his passion, perseverance, and commitment to excellence in the printing industry.

The Impact of Seasonality On the Real Estate Market

Seasonality has a significant impact on the real estate market, influencing both buyer and seller behavior. Here are some key points to consider when discussing the impact of seasonality:

1. Demand and Inventory: The number of buyers and sellers in the market fluctuates throughout the year. Generally, the spring and summer months see increased activity, as families prefer to move during warmer weather and before the new school year begins. This results in higher demand and more inventory during these seasons.

2. Pricing: Seasonality can also affect home prices. During the peak season, when there is higher demand, sellers may be able to command higher prices for their properties. Conversely, during the off-peak season, sellers may need to adjust their prices to attract buyers.

3. Competition: The level of competition among buyers and sellers can vary based on the season. In a seller's market, when demand exceeds supply, buyers may face more competition and multiple offer situations. On the other hand, in a buyer's market, when there is an excess of inventory, sellers may need to be more competitive in pricing and marketing their properties.

4. Market Trends: Real estate market trends can vary throughout the year. For example, in areas with vacation or second-home markets, there may be a surge of buyers during the holiday season or summer months. Additionally, areas with strong university or college presence may experience increased rental demand during the start of the academic year.

5. Regional Differences: It's important to note that the impact of seasonality can differ based on the region. For example, in colder climates, the winter months may experience a slowdown in real estate activity due to weather conditions. Conversely, in warmer climates, the winter months may be considered the peak season.

Understanding the impact of seasonality on the real estate market can help both buyers and sellers make informed decisions. Real estate professionals should be aware of these patterns and adjust their strategies accordingly to maximize their success in any given season.

For a zesty, hearty dessert, look to lemon cheesecake. This is the perfect dessert for any celebration. The best part about serving any cheesecake is that it can be prepared in advance and stored in the refrigerator until ready to slice and serve. This one is no different.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 pounds full-fat cream cheese

• 8 ounces sour cream (1 cup)

• 3 large eggs

• Cooking spray

• 10 ounces gingersnap cookies (about 40)

• 7 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar, divided

• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

• 2 medium lemons, divided

• 1 teaspoon lemon extract

• 3 sprigs fresh mint DIRECTIONS

Place 2 pounds full-fat cream cheese in the bowl of a stand mixer (or large bowl if using an electric hand mixer). Place 8 ounces sour cream and 3 large eggs out on the counter. Let all the ingredients sit out until they reach room temperature, about 2 hours.

Arrange an oven rack in the lower third of the oven and heat the oven to 350°F. Place a sheet of parchment paper on the removable bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Replace the ring and secure it to the base. (The overhang will help you remove the cake from the base once baked.) Wrap the base of the pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil to prevent leaks. Coat the bottom and sides of the pan with cooking spray. Place 10 ounces gingersnap cookies In the bowl of a food processor fitted with the blade attachment and pulse into fine crumbs (about 1 3/4 cups), about 20 (1-second) pulses. (Alternatively, place the cookies in a resealable plastic bag and crush with a rolling pin into fine crumbs.) Transfer to a medium bowl.

Place 7 tablespoons butter in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second increments until melted, about 60 seconds total. Pour over the crumbs. Add 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar and 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt and stir until combined. Transfer to the springform pan and press evenly into the bottom and up the sides. Bake for 8 minutes. Meanwhile, finely grate the zest of 1 medium lemon (about 1 tablespoon). Juice the lemon until you have 3 tablespoons. When the crust is ready, let cool on a wire rack while you prepare the filling.

Add the remaining 1 cup of granulated sugar to the bowl of cream cheese. Beat with the paddle attachment on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. Add the sour cream, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon lemon extract, and beat on medium speed until combined, about 1 minute. Beat in the eggs one at a time, waiting until each is egg is completely incorporated before adding the next. Pour into the crust and smooth out the top.

Boil enough water to fill a large roasting pan with 1 inch of water. Place the springform pan inside the roasting pan. Carefully pour the hot water into the roasting pan, being careful not to splash any water into the cheesecake. Bake until the center is almost set but wobbles slightly if you gently shake the pan, 60 to 70 minutes.

Turn the oven off and open the oven door slightly or prop it open with a wooden spoon. Let the cheesecake sit in the oven in the water bath as it cools down for 1 hour. Remove from the oven, then remove the cheesecake from the water bath onto a wire rack. Let sit uncovered until room temperature. Cover and refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 4 hours or overnight.

When ready to serve, run a paring knife along the inside of the pan. Unlock and remove the outer ring. Hold one of the corners of parchment down, slide a large offset spatula underneath the cheesecake, and transfer to a serving platter.

Thinly slice the remaining lemon and pick the leaves from 3 fresh mint sprigs. Garnish the cheesecake with the lemon and mint. Cut into slices and serve. 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 12

FAMILY & LIFESTYLE

Take action during an overwhelming time with this quick guide.

When someone close to you dies, the whirlwind of emotions and planning can be paralyzing. And if you’re the heir in charge or executor of your loved one’s will, decision-making and to-dos are a heavy weight on your shoulders.

You’ll need to be up for this huge undertaking, often described as a second job. Don’t be afraid to share concerns if you aren’t the best fit for the job. Even if you’re ready, find helpers such as your loved one’s financial advisor and attorney to guide you and put the estate plan into action.

If you accept the role, check in with yourself. What support will you need? Support could look like grief counseling through a therapist or having meals delivered. You may need to include more free time in your schedule for space to cope. Prioritize sleep, healthy foods, and movement to make sure your physical self can keep up with the extra stress you’re putting on your body, mind, and soul.

One step at a time

Breaking down to-dos into steps can help you move forward. First, you’ll want to get multiple copies of the death certificate. Typically, the funeral home will order this. You’ll need the certificates to notify various institutions, such as insurance companies, of your loved one’s death.

Locate the will to determine if probate is necessary. If there's a will, file a petition for probate. If there isn’t a will, the court will select an administrator (You can reach out to family and friends to gauge interest) to manage the estate.

Notify beneficiaries and interested parties of the death as soon as possible. Executors need to let family, friends, heirs, beneficiaries, and any others know. When you find pockets of time, cancel subscriptions and services – phone plans, internet and utilities, car insurance, credit cards and other accounts and services will need to be canceled.

You’ll want to gather estate asset records such as bank accounts, vehicle information, retirement accounts, life insurance, investments and stocks, trusts, property titles, business interests, and personal belongings. Recent tax returns can help. Debts and taxes of the estate will need to be paid, including funeral expenses. Once debts are paid, the executor can distribute assets to the beneficiaries according to the will or the laws of the state.

Even the strongest person may need a helping hand. The passing of a loved one is emotional, and executing an estate plan is highly administrative. The help of financial advisors, accountants, insurance agents, attorneys and supportive family and friends can make the process smoother and less stressful.

Next steps

Action items for those first few weeks.

• Notify beneficiaries and gather important documents such as the will, death certificate, and financial statements.

• File death certificates with the Social Security Administration, other government agencies, and financial institutions as required by the state. Apply for veteran benefits, if applicable.

• Open a bank account for the estate. Contact creditors and other debtors. Begin paying the deceased's final expenses, such as funeral costs and medical bills. Raymond James and its advisors do not offer tax advice. You should discuss any tax matters with the appropriate professional.

Summer’s officially here, and so is plenty of time spent on the water! Whether you’re boating, tubing or taking a dip, practicing proper water safety and recognizing the specific dangers of swimming in rivers, lakes and other bodies of open water is essential.

Our team spoke with City of Waco Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Jeske and gathered information from our teams’ medical experts to provide you with these valuable water safety tips.

Tip #1: Never leave children unattended. This tip may seem like common sense, but we may feel comfortable leaving children unattended if they know how to swim. Lakes and rivers generally don’t have lifeguards on duty, so paying attention and having at least one adult supervising the area is especially important.

We all need to use the restroom, grab a snack or check our phone every once in a while. If you take a break, make sure that another adult is watching over your group of swimmers. Not paying attention for even a short time can have deadly consequences. “It only takes half a cup of water in your lungs to drown,” says Tim Jeske. “People can drown within a few seconds. A child can slip under the water just like that.”

Tip #2: Alcohol and water don’t mix.

According to the CDC, alcohol use is involved in up to 70% of deaths associated with water recreation. Alcohol use also contributes to nearly one in four emergency department visits for drowning and about one in five reported boating deaths in the United States. The bottom line? Your drink can wait — no life is worth it. Alcohol dulls your senses, clouds your judgment and impedes your ability to supervise children and stay ready to act to protect others.

Tip #3: Use the buddy system.

Always swim with a buddy, no matter how confident you are in your swimming abilities. You never know what could happen out on the water, and you’d rather be safe than sorry.

Summer Water Safety Tips From an Expert

Tim Jeske’s number one piece of water safety advice? “Never swim alone.” This extends beyond just swimming. Whether you’re boating, kayaking, canoeing or participating in any other water activity, do it with a buddy and always inform someone who isn’t on the trip about your plans. Let them know where you’ll be and when you expect to return. This precaution ensures that help can arrive more quickly if something goes wrong.

Tip #4: Wear a life jacket.

According to Texas state law, a life jacket must be worn by each person aboard a vessel. All children under 13 are required to wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket on recreational vessels that are under 26 feet long and underway, or on the water. This law also applies when the vessel is drifting or not at anchor.

“A common misconception is that you don’t need a life jacket if you know how to swim,” says Tim Jeske. “It takes the average adult 60 seconds to drown. It only takes 30 seconds to put on a life jacket, and it buys you time to get rescued.”

Tip #5: Always wear sun protection.

Although sunlight and vitamin D are essential to human survival, you don’t want too much of a good thing. Every day, approximately 9,500 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer. Even if the sky is overcast, clouds can only filter up to 25% of the sun’s UV rays. Wear sun protection while having fun on the water this summer, no matter the weather.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that all children and adults wear water-resistant, broad-spectrum protection sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when spending time outdoors. Many retailers also offer sun-protective swimwear and clothing — look for UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) labels while shopping. Last but not least, don’t forget your hat and sunglasses!

By remembering these tips and resources while on the water, you and your family can have a safe, fun-filled summer!

FIREFIGHTERS How to Help Your Local PARAMEDICS and Help You

Regardless of your age, it's crucial to remember and practice safety tips. As a family, sharing and practicing these tips together can ensure everyone's safety in case of an emergency.

Dialing 911 in an Emergency

The 911 system, established in 1968, has significantly improved over the years. Here are some key points to remember when dialing 911:

• Speak Slowly and Remain Calm: Clear communication is essential in emergencies.

• Know Your Physical Address: Be familiar with your address or have solid landmarks to describe your location.

• Provide Concise Information: Answer questions with short, informative responses.

• Designate a Safe Meeting Place: Have a spot outdoors at a safe distance from your home where your family can gather. Practice this regularly to ensure everyone knows where to go.

• Have an Exit Plan: Create and practice an exit plan for all parts of your house, including at least two exits.

Fire Safety Tips

• Don't Hide from Firefighters: Remind children that firefighters are there to help, and not to hide from them. It will be hot, dark, and smoky during a fire, and the firefighters' search will be quick. Ensure everyone is easily found.

• Close Doors to Contain Fire: If you are certain no one is in

the room where the fire started, and it is safe to do so, close the door to that room. This helps slow the fire's spread and may provide extra time to exit safely.

• Stay Low and Crawl: Heat and smoke rise, so the air near the floor is safer to breathe.

• Stop, Drop, and Roll: If your clothing catches fire, stop, drop to the ground, and roll to extinguish the flames, covering your head with your arms to protect your head and airway.

• Keep Your Home Exterior Clear: For older family members, ensure the outside of your home is free of clutter, tall grass, and bushes to prevent fire spread.

Medical Emergencies

• When providing answers to medical questions, use as few words as possible:

• What Happened?

• Is the Person Breathing?

• Is the Person Bleeding?

Community Engagement

Visit your local fire department to learn more about their operations and how to make your home and family safer. Bringing cookies or waters and taking a tour can be a great way to engage with your local firefighters. They are always willing to help you understand more about staying safe.

Practicing these tips and engaging with your local fire department can make a significant difference in ensuring your family's safety in emergencies.

The foster care system is a complex network designed to provide safety and stability for children who have experienced neglect, abuse, or abandonment. However, the journey through this system can be particularly tumultuous for teenagers, often labeled as "undesirable" and "hard to place."

For years, one child bounced from one foster home to another, each placement ending in disappointment and rejection. Her label as an "undesirable teenager" was a heavy burden, shaping the perceptions of potential foster parents and making it nearly impossible to find a permanent home. Many believed she was too damaged to help, too late to save.

The turning point came during one particular pre-placement visit. This visit wasn't just about evaluating whether the home was willing to accept her; it was also about determining if she wanted to be there. For the

first time, she had a voice in the process. This two-way interview was new territory for her, a glimmer of hope in a world that had largely ignored her wishes and needs.

The conversation was meaningful. Talk about her experiences, her dreams, and her fears were a focal point. She was cautious, guarded by years of disappointment. But beneath that exterior was a glimmer of hope. By the end of the exchange, she said something that struck a chord: "I want this to be my last placement."

As she settled into her new home, she discovered her passion for weight lifting. What started as a casual interest quickly became a source of empowerment. With the unwavering support of a stable family environment, she began to excel. Her dedication and hard work paid off, and she qualified for the state weightlifting competition.

The newfound stability and support she re-

ceived at home played a crucial role in her success. For the first time, she experienced what it was like to have a family cheering her on, offering encouragement and celebrating her achievements. This sense of belonging and support was transformative.

Competing at such a high level was a testament to her resilience and determination. She had not only excelled in weight lifting but also in overcoming the emotional and psychological scars of her past.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the potential within every foster child, no matter how "undesirable" they may seem. With the right support and environment, they can achieve remarkable things. This young woman's journey from a cycle of rejection to triumph in the sport of weightlifting competition underscores the importance of giving every child a chance to succeed and the transformative power of a loving and supportive home.

Like many states, Texas is in a foster care capacity crisis right now. There is an abundance of children being placed in the system, yet a shortage of all things from foster parents to caseworkers and everything else in between. The State of the State 2023 Annual Report published by TexProtects confirms that (biological) families are not receiving the ongoing preventative support they need and that high staff turnover has led to unmanageable caseload sizes. I find the report both intriguing and enlightening to the harsh realities we are facing both internally and externally within the system. The statistics are staggering. Texas is (or tries to be) reactive to the problems of abuse and neglect, but prevention supports are severely lacking. There are countless children who need loving individuals to step into the role of foster parent and be willing to try and minimize the effects of unwelcome trauma.

When I talk about foster parenting with other people they almost always have the same response, “Oh, I could never do that.” The words always grieve my heart a bit as I silently wonder, “Why not?” It seems to be a response rooted in fear. Fear of what could happen, fear of the unknown, fear of not having enough support, fear of lack of resources, fear of loving and losing, fear of a child’s “issues”, fear of the financial strain it could create, fear of the effects it will have on your biological children and family, fear of false allegations; the list could go on and on. Notice the common denominator in all the things listed: fear, and more specifically, fear of anything negative that could come from fostering.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7

These are legitimate fears and certainly considerations that should be kept in mind, but as the verse above alludes to, immeasurable impact can be accomplished when we push fear aside and rise up in power, love, and self-discipline on behalf of a child in need. There may be some tribulation along the way, but truly, when you focus on the GOOD that can come from it, the voice of fear gets silenced quickly. Think of it this way…Childbirth is hard, bringing with it immense pain, but pain is rapidly replaced with joy when we lay

eyes on our new bundle of joy. Child rearing is hard, again with unimaginable challenges, but it doesn’t stop us parents from being overwhelmingly proud when our child triumphs over any of life’s hurdles. You’ll find the things you celebrate with your biological child really aren't all that different from what you’d celebrate with a foster child. So let’s talk about triumphs in the midst of tribulations that I have celebrated with my children, foster, adoptive ,and biological alike, over the years.

Tribulation: Major temper tantrums; the “throw yourself on the floor in public” kind.

Triumph: The first time my child went a whole week without having one.

Tribulation: Wetting the bed.

Triumph: Sleeping through the night without an accident.

Tribulation: Feeling like a true part of the family

Triumph: When each child (in their own time) called me “Mom”

Tribulation: Periods of time when at-home behaviors were tough

Triumph: Behaviors were excellent at school

Tribulation: Being at wit’s end; not knowing how to help my child with said behaviors

Triumph: Answers and resources that came with a long-awaited medical diagnosis.

Tribulation: Not being able to understand anything my child was saying at 4 years old.

Triumph: Speech impediment disappeared overnight with the right speech therapist.

Tribulation: Emotional struggles and mental health issues related to past traumas.

Triumph: Finding a counselor who “clicked” with my child.

Tribulation: Attachment disorders

Triumph: My child hugged me and said “I love you” (it took about 12 years)

Tribulation: Learning we have to work hard; money doesn’t grow on trees

Triumph: Seeing each child get a job and save money for special splurges

Tribulation: Single parenting 6 kids

Triumph: Seeing them complete each grade and graduate high school

Tribulation: Not having a dad around

Triumph: Seeing them be leaders of faith and hard work on the athletic and career fields

Tribulation: Being “wild as a March hare” as a teen/young adult

Triumph: Watching them get focused, start college, and go after their goals

I could go on and on forever. This activity was very therapeutic for myself so I’d encourage you to try it yourself if you find yourself in the thick of a storm. The truth is, in the 18+ years I have been raising kids, there have been a lot of struggles. Life has been hard with unexpected twists and turns; whose isn’t? As I think back over each of the tribulations, the triumphs far outweigh the struggles. There have been many times that I’ve felt desperate and alone as a mother. I’ve felt incapable and decided I was a failure on more than one occasion. God has always been faithful to send me encouraging reminders along the way.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. James 1:2-4

Rejoice in the little things: Like learning through an aptitude test that you and your most difficult child are actually very like-minded. Rejoice in the bigger things: Like receiving a text that says, “I helped a victim of sex-trafficking today. She truly believes it was all her fault and her mom told her it was because she flirts with her eyes. I passed along a saying to her, “I am not a victim; I am a

survivor.” She cried. I just wanted to say thank you and I love you. Thank you for believing me.”

As an educator, I taught many foster children over the years. I love watching them grow up and go on to use their story to impact and empower others. I find them the most inspiring kind of people.

So when you say, “Oh, I could never do that,” my question to you would be, “Why not?” You are stronger than the fear inside of you. With great tribulation will be even greater triumph. Consider helping the capacity crisis and become a foster parent.

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Philippians 4:4-5

John 8 | Galatians 5:13-14 | Galatians 5:1 | Ephesians 3:12 https://www.almondblossomministries.com #freedom #grace #process #testimont #shift #righteousness

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom."

2 Corinthians 3:17

hen we ask the Lord to set us free from something we can rest assured that He hears us. If our children were tangled up in a mess of barbed wire wouldn't we rush to help them? Absolutely, but we can also understand that it would be a process to get them out of a mess like that. We wouldn't just jerk them out. We would carefully, layer by layer, remove the sharp wire. This is sometimes how our freedom comes about. God frees us layer by layer. Showing us small pieces of our wounded hearts so we can heal and be free from the lies of the enemy.

Have you ever asked the Lord to set you free from something? My favorite question of Jesus is when the blind man came to Him and He said, "What is it you want Me to do for you?" It was most likely obvious he was blind, but Jesus asked him so the man would have to say what he wanted. Sometimes we hesitate to ask for freedom because it is just how it has always been, it seems impossible, or we think we don't deserve the freedom our heart desires. I believe the Lord wants us to ask for freedom, and when we do, something shifts. We don't always see it right then, but in the Kingdom, something happens when we ask!

In the last year, I am learning to appreciate the process of how God answers us. I see that there is this moment of desperate surrender where we ask the Lord for help so He sends the help, but it takes a minute for this to happen. Our timing is not His, and our ways are not His. Last year my dear friend struggled fiercely, and after coming out on the other side I told the spouse that I am learning that we have to "trust the process". I must confess I am not unshakeable in this, but I am learning. It is so beautiful when we stand victoriously on the other side and are able to share what God has done for us. "So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." John 8:36

Today I want to encourage you to ask for the thing that your heart desires. Ask for freedom from the addiction, the shame, the pride, the guilt, the regret, and the unworthiness. Whatever it is, ask Him my friend! Let Him begin the process of refining and setting you free. I pray today that you either are filled to fullness with hope of your freedom that He has for you or that you are able to worship ankle deep in His amazing grace, being clothed in His righteousness, and celebrating what our Lord and Savior has done for you! Love you my friend!

September 7: Sam Riggs at Putters & Gutters Fun Center, 7PM. Sam Riggs was flying a singleengine plane from Austin, Texas, to San Angelo in the spring of 2017 when he heard the oddest sound: Nothing. Catastrophic engine failure. He’d lost all power and had about 6,500 feet to figure out how to escape a potentially fatal problem. “There was,” he admits, “a moment of panic, a moment that felt very surreal.” But Riggs pulled it together. With the help of air traffic control, he found an abandoned airstrip on a Lone Star cattle ranch and touched down without a scratch. One of his most perilous moments ended up becoming one of his smoothest landings as a pilot. It’s something of a metaphor for Riggs’ life. He’s a wild live performer, an inveterate risk-taker and an enthusiastic adventurer. As a self-sustaining, independent singer/songwriter, he’s taken a

leap of faith on more than one occasion, always willing to back up his plunges with a voracious amount of work. So, he shrugs it off a bit when he thinks about how close he came to the edge in his aviation exercise. “That’s just how my life has always gone,” Riggs says with a lAugusth. “I’ve sort of become used to it.” The sense of daring is a key element in Riggs’ brand of country, a rockinfused sound with a chip on its sonic shoulder from a guy who counts Garth Brooks, Foo Fighters, George Jones and Blink-182 among his influences. Between the swampy, thumping hardrock crunch of “Angola’s Lament,” the mysterious darkness of “Long Shot” and the feverish snarl of “High On A Country Song,” all of those raucous, rebellious elements find their place inside the boundary-pushing attitude on the two albums and two EPs Riggs has created on his own dime since 2010. The music has become an essential piece of the red-dirt scene in Texas, though it’s earning a distinct spot in the national consciousness as well. Riggs’ last album – the 2016 release Breathless, distributed by indie Thirty Tigers –debuted at No. 12 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.
