The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce has long been a cornerstone of economic and community development in Hamilton, Texas. Established to support local businesses and foster economic growth, the Chamber has also been instrumental in creating and promoting events that celebrate the community’s unique culture. One of the Chamber's main focuses is to enhance the quality of life in Hamilton, recognizing that a thriving community benefits everyone.

An early goal of the Chamber was to create opportunities for the community to come together and make memories. This goal led to the creation of festivals and events dating back to the early 1970’s. Among these events, the Hamilton County Dove Festival stands out as a beloved tradition that attracts visitors from near and far. In recent years the Chamber of Commerce launched more festivals to help continue to attract visitors to our incredible town like May Days, Christmas on the Square and the 4th of July Celebration.

Before the establishment of the Chamber or the Dove Festival, Hamilton was already a vibrant community. Founded in the mid-19th century, Hamilton quickly

became a vital trading post and important commercial hub. This environment set the stage for the formation of the Chamber of Commerce in 1922.

Since its creation the Chamber of Commerce has been under the leadership of many incredible Hamiltonians. From David Lengefeld to Beverly Rhode, each member of the board of directors held their responsibility to the community with the highest regard. Our current leadership includes President Jeff Timmons, Vice-President Brad Peterson, Treasurer Joelle Jocis, Yale Yocham, Jacque Emley with Tamara Timmons serving as the Chamber Advisor. While many of these members of this team have been serving the community for 1-2 years now, three integral members of the board recently completed their term, Candace Stroud, Abbie Housden Creasey and Hunter Creasey. Hunter still serves as Past-President.

The largest event for the Chamber is the Hamilton County Dove Festival which began in 1972 as a way to celebrate the local culture and community spirit. The festival was designed to highlight the area's reputation as a prime location for dove hunting. Afterall, we are the Dove Capital of Texas. The timing coincided with the opening of dove hunting season in Texas, making it a natural fit for a community festival.

Having found its home on Labor Day weekend, the Dove Fest not only attracts hunting enthusiasts but also brings together families and residents for a weekend of fun, food, and entertainment. The festival quickly gained traction, drawing visitors from neighboring towns and beyond especially being nestled at the crossroads of Highways 281 and 36.

As the primary organizing body, the Chamber worked diligently to coordinate the festival's logistics, secure sponsorships, and promote the event. Planning for the next year starts days after the current event wraps which means, yes, the 53rd Annual Dove Festival is currently in the works. Through the years, the Chamber’s involvement ensured that the festival aligned with its mission of fostering economic growth while celebrating local culture. From its inception, the Hamilton County Dove Festival offered a variety of activities aimed at all ages. Events typically include:

• Scholarship Pageant: Kicking the weekend off with contestants from across the county, the pageant crowns a Dove Festival Queen and her court plus awards the queen with a scholarship to a college or university of their choice.

• Dove Run 5k/1 mile Fun Run: Hosted by Hamilton Healthcare System this event kicks off Saturday morning before the parade. Hundreds of runners of all ages step up to the starting line to kick off a day full of fun.

• Parade: The 52nd Annual Dove Fest Parade was sponsored by Companion Lonestar Solutions and featured 30+ floats and participants making it the largest (and longest) parade in years!

• Live Entertainment: The festival features local musicians and bands, providing a lively atmosphere for attendees. Music ranges from country to rock, reflecting the diverse tastes of the community. Years past have seen artists like Parker McCollum, Koe Wetzel, Asleep at the Wheel, Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin, The Tejas Brothers and many more.

• Food Vendors: Local restaurants and food vendors set up stalls offering a variety of cuisines. Signature dishes often include BBQ, Tex-Mex, and, of course, dishes featuring dove, showcasing the local culinary scene.

• Arts and Crafts: Local artisans and crafters display their handmade goods, giving visitors the chance to purchase unique souvenirs while supporting local businesses.

• Children's Activities: A dedicated area for kids includes games, bounce houses, and face painting, ensuring that families can enjoy the festival together.

Over the years, the Hamilton County Dove Festival has grown exponentially in popularity. What began as a small local event has evolved into a major festival that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Chamber has continuously sought ways to enhance the festival experience, introducing new attractions and activities that appeal to a wider audience. The 52nd Annual Dove Festival hosted over 70 unique vendors, 2 nights of pro rodeo performances and a concert featuring Mike Ryan.

A favorite event of the weekend to highlight is the Miss Hamilton County Dove Festival Pageant. Candace Stroud has been the director for the last 18 years and helped award thousands of dollars in scholarships to the winners. Under

her guidance she has grown the pageant to upwards of 60 contestants with judges traveling from across the state to meet the incredible young ladies in our community.

From the pageant to the rodeo and various other events, the impact of the Dove Festival on Hamilton cannot be overstated. The influx of visitors generates significant revenue for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. Many local vendors report a substantial increase in sales during the festival weekend, providing a much-needed boost to our small community.

The festival also promotes Hamilton as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, further diversifying the local economy. The success of the Dove Festival has inspired other local events, contributing to a vibrant community calendar that attracts visitors year-round. Events like May Days, Christmas on the Square and 4th of July Celebration wouldn’t be possible without the success of the Dove Festival.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce remains dedicated to the continued success of both the Dove Festival and the local business community. By leveraging the festival's popularity, the Chamber actively promotes local businesses and fosters collaboration among community members.

As we move into the close of 2024, the Hamilton Cham-

ber of Commerce is hard at work planning the remaining events for this year and into next. December 5th will host Christmas of the Square complete with parade, tree lighting by the 2023 Citizen of the Year Grant Lengefeld, and a visit from Santa Claus himself. From there we move into May Days (first weekend in May), the return of Bingo Nights, 4th of July Celebration, community mixers, ribbon cuttings and so much more. Plans to incorporate more events and fun elements ensure that the Chamber continues to support the growth and development of the community and provides engaging activities for all attendees.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce plans to continue to share the importance of community, culture, and economic vitality in Hamilton. From the Chamber's establishment in 1922 to the launch of the Dove Festival in 1972, both entities have played integral roles in shaping the town’s identity and fostering a sense of community pride.

As Hamilton continues to grow and adapt to new challenges, the partnership between the Chamber and other incredible organizations within the community will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of the community, celebrating local traditions while paving the way for future growth and prosperity. Together, we strive towards a shared goal of reflecting the enduring spirit of Hamilton, showcasing its unique character and the unwavering commitment of its residents to support one another.

I'd like to share a story about a young girl I'll call T. She came to me after enduring a series of difficult experiences in foster homes. We developed a strong bond, but she struggled to accept positive moments. For her, happiness felt threatening; after so many disappointments, she feared that getting close would only lead to more pain. This led her to self-sabotage, creating distance even as she desperately wanted to stay connected. T came from a part of the Texas foster system known for its challenging placements. When she was moved from my home, she left unwillingly, crying in the backseat of the car. She pressed her face against the window and cried out for her “mom” (not that she had expressed that before). Just 24 hours after arriving at her

new placement, she ran away. She had told the other foster kids that her goal was to return to me, and after fleeing, she stayed on the run for nearly a year until she turned 18, at which point CPS could no longer intervene.

Once she aged out of the system, T contacted her attorney, who reached out to me to see if we could reconnect. I was happy to agree, and when she called, I was amazed to hear how well she was doing. She had found someone she could trust while out there and was building a life together. T was excited about getting married, had landed a good job, and worked hard enough to become a manager. She even had her own car and was thriving on her own, looking into college, and finding success after such a difficult start.

During our conversation, T expressed gratitude for the time we spent together. She acknowledged that despite her fears, there were good homes out there and that she had created emotional distance to protect herself from being hurt. She also took accountability for her past choices, realizing that her actions had led to her being moved again, even though she had enjoyed living in my home.

Her journey highlights an important lesson: success can manifest in unexpected ways. Sometimes, the impact we have on others may not be immediately visible, but it can help them find their own path to success.

We accept foster experiences to share in hope it will inspire others to take a chance.

Iwatched a show the other day where a middle-aged woman and her husband were discussing adoption with a child placing agency representative. The woman told the representative that she had a grown child and now wanted to adopt. When asked, “Why”, the woman replied, “I was a law student when I had my first child. I was swamped with school and money was tight; add in the stress of raising a child and being a mother was, at best, a struggle. I am at a point in my life now where I think I could enjoy being a mom.”

Society says being a mom is supposed to be all warm and fuzzy and leaves little grace for a woman to acknowledge that “momming” is hard and not always enjoyable.

For years I carried around guilt for not having the kind of feelings “moms” were supposed to have. I remember being so overwhelmed as a young mom. The mountain of laundry created by our family of ten took a whole day out of each week to fold and put away. I felt homebound for at least two years because I couldn’t wrangle all of the little kids by myself in public. The normal needs of a child and bickering amongst siblings seemed magnified because there were 8 kids under the age of ten. I constantly felt like I had to prove to the world that I was fine and completely capable of raising the family I chose; lest I be judged. I was afraid for anyone to think that I did not have it all together.

Don’t get me wrong, having children, adopting children, & fostering children brings (and has always brought) me unmeasurable joy. I chose my kids. I could have said, “no”, at any time (if only it were that easy). I knew then and I know now that I was doing exactly what I was meant to do; I was living out my calling, but I sure didn’t feel warm and fuzzy about it most days. When I think about “living life” during the years when they were young, words like overwhelmed, exhausted, judged, and stressful come to mind.

Facebook was one of the only outlets to the world I had back then. I would often share funny, yet overwhelming moments that happened among my kiddos. Sometimes I would make an outcry for help or advice. People would always reply, “Cherish this time, you’ll miss it one day.” I’ll be the mom to step out on the ledge, raise my hand and admit, I don’t miss my kids being little. Hopefully I’m not alone. There are definitely moments that I miss and memories made that I will forever cherish, but I am thankful each day that my family has grown out of that stage of life. Perhaps it is because I was so young myself (25). Maybe there were other outlying factors. I suspect it was a combination of all.

My feelings have finally begun to change over the last few years, reminding me I am capable of having “normal” mom feelings. I reluctantly admit I am closer to “middle-aged” now. Age has grown knowledge, wisdom, and humility. Those outlying, contributing factors are very different now. I handle stress differently and am much better at prioritizing peace. My youngest became a teenager and I enjoy it! So much has changed and it has enabled me to cling to the warm and fuzzy feelings I missed so much as a young mom.

Just like the mom in the TV show I watched, I have often wondered what it would be like to have another baby. I wonder what it would be like to raise just one kid at a time. Would I actually be able to enjoy those younger years without the overwhelming demands that come with raising a whole passel at once? Who knows? What I do know is that right now, in this moment, I will cherish the fact that I have teenagers who can fold their own laundry and carry on a conversation with me. I thank God every day for allowing me a season of time to have warm and fuzzy feelings when I think about my kids.

If you’re a mom who finds herself struggling to enjoy her houseful of young kids, hang in there. You are not alone. Your struggle doesn’t mean that you don’t love your kids or that you are incapable of being a good mom. Seasons change. It will get better.

RELEVANT REFLECTIONS

Eyes Wide Open

Ready, Set, Go! It’s your season to run your race without looking back. Forget the past and, with a forward focus, pursue all that God has for you, keeping your eyes fixed on Jesus.

Rejoice in this moment as you are given new sight. Through this lens of faith, the Lord brings freedom, enabling you to run your race continually with the peace that assures you that, yes, your children and family will serve Him. I hear, "Let go, heal, release, for freedom is here, and you will no longer carry the weight of yesterday."

This verse provides insight and revelation. The "cloud of witnesses" represents the people around us—family, friends, and those who want to share their opinions. While they can be a valuable support system, they are not as essential as the specific, God-given individual race that He has set for each of us. This race is your unique purpose and His plan for you. The text also reveals that disturbances within this "cloud of witnesses" can sometimes bring unnecessary weight and heaviness, leading to the pressure of peoplepleasing, which hinders and slows down our progress. Therefore,

the scripture instructs us to cast off these burdens and fix our eyes on Jesus. These verses teach us that opposition and confusion will come, but by maintaining our central focus on Jesus, we can keep running our race without losing heart or growing weary.

Focus your gaze and confidence on Jesus and prepare to see and receive all that He has in this season run and win!

Saving well, spending well and investing well are essential to a financially sound lifestyle, but for those inclined toward philanthropy, giving well should garner similar consideration.

Matters of timing, taxation and method can significantly change how your giving aligns with both your financial plan and your philanthropic objectives. Thoughtful planning and an understanding of the nuances can help you balance competing interests and help you increase the effect of your giving.

Here are some of the basic principles of giving well, though specifics are best discussed with your financial team.

Americans are a generous people, with individuals giving an amount each year equal to roughly 2% of the gross domestic product, passing the $500 billion mark in 2021, based on a survey series by the U.S. Census Bureau.

For as many givers, there are as many reasons to give, but among high-net-worth individuals surveyed by the Indiana University Center of Philanthropy, most –62% – said they are motivated by a sense of duty to give back to their communities. Through their generosity, they enable things as diverse as local performing arts, adoption assistance, home repairs and municipal fireworks shows, creating healthier, more vibrant communities.

Similarly, you should set some goals when setting out to donate. This is about more than picking a cause, but about understanding why you are giving and how you hope to engage with the process.

• Do you want to be a sustainer or an advocate for change?

• Do you wish to be hands-on? Do you want to be a board member?

• Do you see philanthropy as a new vocation, or would you rather spend your time on other pursuits?

• Do you wish to be anonymous, or recognized?

• Do you want your giving to be foundational or flexible, and if both, how do you want to split it?

Answering these questions can help you select complementary giving vehicles and set a suitable timeline to maximize the effect of your giving. It may also help you get the most, personally, out of your altruism. The act of giving should feel rewarding. In light of taxes, thoughtfully timing your giving can help you serve both your philanthropic and financial goals. This is a deep topic with a variety of situational strategies that will require the guidance of your financial team, but here are some examples:

• Giving during years with uncommonly high income allows you to deduct donations from adjusted gross income exposed to your highest marginal tax rates.

• The sale of a business may be structured to directly support a charitable cause of choice or a specific charitable vehicle, bypassing personal tax implications.

• Highly appreciated (low basis) stocks can be donated to an organization during a hot market, bypassing the capital gains tax loss.

• A giving plan may be executed before advantageous gift and estate tax laws sunset.

Estate planning often includes similar timing considerations. This is why before making a major financial decision, it’s best to explore the opportunities surrounding it. Particularly with liquidity events, you’ll have far fewer options after the fact.

Texans have an innate sense of self superiority which is why I think I get on with them here ‘cause Brits have got that too. But there’s one thing that Texans are very proud of and that’s their roads. Except I-35. Nobody likes I-35.

Here’s five reasons why Texas roads are better than yours.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

First up, we have the fastest roads in the whole of ‘murica. Take that the other 49 states. 85 miles per hour. Yes, please.

Next up, the Texas U-turn, a piece of infrastructure at highway exits that enables you to exit, do a complete U-turn and go back the other way without having to deal with the stoplight or any intersection. Genius.

Frontage roads! We got frontage roads that run alongside highways making it so easy for you to get on and off as well as to get into other businesses which leads me to number four…

The Tex-it, which is not actually an official thing you can do on the roads here, but everybody does when the highway gets backed up, you just drive across the outside median and you keep on with your journey.

And FINALLY BUC-EES.

Yep we know you can find them in other states, but it’s from Texas and trust me Texas claimed them.

A Year of Growth and Transformation: My Journey as a Coach at Cranfills Gap

This year marks my first year coaching here, and it has been an exhilarating experience. As a proud 1998 graduate of Cranfills Gap, returning to the area has been a rewarding journey. After deciding to step away from 10 plus years of coaching following the 2022-2023 season, I felt a calling to give back to my alma mater, especially after seeing the enthusiasm that Sarah Doty, a former coach and current teacher, brought back to the team.

We kicked off the summer with our inaugural strength and conditioning program for the Lady Lions, which transitioned seamlessly into cross country season starting in August. Since August 3rd, our dedicated athletes have been training, even in the challenging 100+ degree weather. Now

that school is in session, our practices continue after school in the hottest part of the day. These athletes never complain and do the job at hand. As a coach, this is very rewarding because most of these athletes have never ran cross country or put themselves out there like they are right now. I tell them all the time they can do hard things! I think it's finally sinking in, that they are stronger mentally and physically then they believed.

I’m thrilled to share that our participation has grown significantly. Last year, we had just one male and one female high school runner. This year, we have over 30 runners in both junior high and high school, including 5 junior high girls, 11 junior high boys, 15 high school girls, and 3 high school boys. At our last high school meet, every runner achieved their personal best, which is a testament to their hard work and commitment. It's also been very rewarding when parents send pictures of their runner, running on their own. The transformation from last year when they were largely inactive has been truly impressive.

Cross country has always held a special place in my heart. I was the first female from Cranfills Gap to qualify for state in cross country, and watching our students develop a passion for the sport brings me immense joy.

Fighting Bulldog BandPERFECTION IS POSSIBLE

“Hello Darkness, my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again..”

The opening lyrics of “The Sounds of Silence” written by Paul Simon are ones that everyone can relate to. Each of us have struggled through some kind of darkness in our lives. No one makes it through lives without trials and tribulations. But on the other side of that is hope and light.

Hamilton Band Director, Tim Edins, took this concept for a theme for the 2024 Marching Show for the Fighting Bulldog Band. Many bands are moving away from “known” or “recognizable” music. Edins has always done things his way, and wants to present music that audiences know and recognize. Every year Tim picks a theme for a show, from Beatles, Ozzy Osbourne, to Winds of Change, and last year it was Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.” The theme Tim picked this year is “Out of Darkness.”

“The theme this year, is out of darkness.” said Edins. “ Everyone, at some point in their lives, struggles with challenges. Overcoming those challenges makes us stronger, and more resilient. That’s the basis of the show; getting to that point. Leaving the darkness behind and stepping into the light.”

The pieces of music were chosen because they represented our actions during challenges- Fear, Acceptance, Resilience, and Triumph. The band opens with “Fear of the Dark” by Iron Maiden, “Sound of Silence” the Disturbed version, “Fade to Black” by Metallica, and finishing with “ The Chorale from Jupiter” by Holst.

The band not only presents music that goes along with their theme but they are exploring a new element in Marching Arts, performance shirts. These shirts are for the specific show that the band presents each year. The performance tops this year go from Dark to Light. In future years, the band can change the style to match the show. The band also uses backdrops on the field that stick with the shows theme from dark to light.

Assistant Band Director, Katie Campbell, expressed her excitement over the last piece they perform. “One of the most important roles for the drumline is keeping the band together; they are in charge of the beat. Right now we are working on adding lots of rudiments to our fourth movement, an exciting addition to the fantastic arrangement of Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” that Tim Edins wrote.”

Katie is a recent addition to the Hamilton Band program. However, she is a seasoned director and performer. Katie has performed with orchestras, concert bands, marching bands, country and western bands all over the country included a tour in Argentina. She’s directed at many schools across Texas taking bands to perform at Midwest in Chicago and Florida to march at Disney World. When asked why she decided to apply for this position, she stated “A job where I get to work with musicians from 5th grade all the way through 12th grade?! A dream!”

If you watch any halftime show it is not only the musicians on the field but the Color Guard performing their routine as well. Many times they also have to weave in and out of the band members as they move on the field twirling their flags in sync. Color Guard Sponsor Marissa Salley is a former Color Guard member herself so she understands the amount of work that it goes into to choreograph a routine to go along with the music. Salley said “My background with Color Guard started my Sophomore year of HS. Our show that year was Afterlife, and in the years between HS and coming back as the Color Guard sponsor, I twirled every broom I picked up, much to the annoyance of those around me!”

This year the Color Guard not only asked to use the regular flags but swing flags, and chain flags that double as cloaks. Chain flags has been a fun addition, however, it is not always easy to handle them.

The Color Guard team has had a few bumps in the road this year. Salley praised the team's positive attitude in the face of adversity, noting that they've overcome equipment changes, drill adjustments, and uniform mishaps with patience and adaptability.

Working with 60 students at one time has its challenges. Hamilton is a 2A school so that is fairly large for our size of school. The directors must present the music, drill, and choreography to them and give them to tools to learn it. The students are the ones doing the hard work of learning and preparing it.

Edins started teaching in Hamilton in 1986. He knows how to build relationships with the students that make them want to be their best. He is firm, and doesn’t sugar coat it when the students have areas that need work. But Edins always finds a way to productively critique the students as Marching season moves along.

Salley and Campbell are also committed to fostering positive relationships with their students. Salley stated, the best part of being a Color Guard sponsor is watching the students come into their own. “I love watching them go from timid first year members to confident team members that are choreographing routines to help out the newbies!”

Campbell pointed out that student leaders in the band are essential. “We have two incredible student leaders, Kayla Tawater and Tyler Bloomcamp,” said Cambell “They play a huge role in keeping the expectations high and making sure that students meet those expectations. They also help with morale and logistical tasks.”

Fostering relationships with your students is important no matter what classroom you are in. Ask anyone and they will tell you there is a teacher that is impacted their life. Dax Freeman, a Hamilton High Alum, only had two years with Mr. Edins, but they made an impact. Tim came to Hamilton Dax’s junior year. Dax said “Be-

fore my junior year, the band was “good” but had not made that top rating at contest for many years. I will never forget getting that first division at marching Contest my senior year.” Edins became Dax’s favorite teacher and he decided to pursue a career as a band director. He received a music degree at Tarleton State University and is now in his 28th year of teaching. Dax shared, "Tim has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me. I'm so thankful for his guidance and support. I'm honored to call him both a colleague and a friend."

No matter how old you get, you still want to impress your teachers. Dax shared a story that Tim was a road representative for NTune Music several years ago. Road representatives go out to bring supplies, instruments, etc to different school districts. Edins showed up while Freeman was teaching a beginner trombone class, and Edins sat through the whole class. Dax laughed “I was SO nervous! It was worse than a teacher evaluation! I just want to show him that maybe I was ok at what I did!”

Edins has set a goal this year to increase the band's community involvement beyond just Friday night halftime performances. They've already participated in events like the Dove Festival Parade and a bull riding event at Circle T Arena, and they have upcoming Christmas performances planned. In addition to their concession stand sales at Friday night games, the band raises funds through the Hamilton Band Boosters BBQ Cook-Off and Lunch and the upcoming Fall Festival.

As the Fighting Bulldog Band continues to shine a light on their community through their music and performances, they embody the spirit of overcoming challenges and embracing the power of hope. Their dedication, talent, and unwavering support for one another have made them a beacon of inspiration for Hamilton and beyond. And the students will hopefully take that light and shine it for many years to come.

Empowering Special Needs Students through a High-Performing Coffee Cart Business

At Hico Secondary School, a unique initiative has been brewing every Friday: a coffee cart program run by special needs students. This project has become a beloved part of the school community, providing both a delicious cup of coffee to students and teachers and invaluable life skills for the participants. It’s not just about caffeine—it’s about fostering independence, teamwork, and real-world experience for students with special needs.

From Concept to Coffee: The Origins of the Program

The coffee cart program began as a simple idea to provide handson job training and social skills development for special needs students. The school’s special education staff sought an opportunity where students could learn practical skills like managing money, following instructions, and interacting with customers—all while being part of a rewarding, real-world experience. A coffee cart turned out to be the perfect solution, combining many of these elements in one engaging activity.

Mrs. Danielle Carey, now a Life Skills teacher at Stephenville ISD, remembers where it all started. “The Screamin Bean Coffee Cart started the fall of 2018 with three Life Skills students. The Coffee Cart is a truly meaningful experience for me. When I started in Hico, the Life Skill students did not have much engagement in the school district and community. So I decided to start something that would include them and provide them with a sense of purpose. There were more positive rewards for having a coffee cart than negative consequences.

I felt it extremely important for my stu dents to be engaged and involved around the school district. Stu dents could have a sense of school pride by talking with people from all over the district. I wanted to give the students a chance to participate in Friday activities, like athletics, band, and cheerlead ers. The coffee cart would also give students a sense of purpose within their school. I really enjoyed watching the students interact with peers as well as adults.

Preparation and Planning: Building Essential Skills

Every Thursday, the students start preparing for their Friday coffee sales. They create a shopping list based on their inventory, ensuring they have everything they need for a successful day. This step requires them to review previous sales data to predict what will be in demand, learning skills like estimation and planning. After the list is prepared, some of the students visit local stores to purchase the supplies, practicing their budgeting skills in real-life settings. These trips are an excellent opportunity to work on communication, social interaction, and math skills, as they navigate the shopping process. Back at school, they prepare the materials for the following day, ensuring that everything is ready for smooth operations. The preparation phase teaches the students about the importance of organization, attention to detail, and teamwork, as each student has a role to play.

Brew Day: Taking Orders and Making Sales

I also wanted to give students the opportunity to work on daily, functional skills. A coffee cart provided students the ability to work on functional academic skills and daily living skills. Students were learning how to shop, stock products, cook, take orders, and handle money.

The first month of the coffee cart was so successful that it quickly became a staple of the Hico Secondary School. I am extremely grateful for a supportive administration and classroom support staff who supported this project and helped it grow. This project will always hold a special place in my heart.”

From the beginning, this program was designed to involve the students in every step of the process. With guidance from their teachers, the students plan, prepare, and run their coffee cart business. This means that they take on various roles, such as shopping for supplies, setting up the cart, taking orders, managing money, and cleaning up afterward.

On Friday mornings, excitement fills the air as the students set up their coffee cart in a central location on campus. With their aprons on and a menu board displayed, they await their first customers, who are often teachers, school staff, and students from across the district. The students rotate through various roles, such as barista, cashier, and server. As baristas, they learn how to operate the coffee maker and ensure each cup meets their customers’ preferences, from regular brews to more creative concoctions. As cashiers, they practice counting money, making change, and managing the till, gaining invaluable financial literacy skills. As servers, they work on communication and customer service, taking orders with a smile and ensuring customers leave satisfied.

Teachers and staff often praise the students for their professionalism and friendly demeanor. The coffee cart has become a weekly highlight, with many looking forward to their Friday morning coffee while knowing that their purchase is supporting a program that makes a real difference in students’ lives.

Learning Beyond the Classroom: Social Skills and Confidence Building

One of the most significant benefits of the coffee cart program is the social development it fosters in the students. Interacting with a variety of customers allows them to practice conversational skills, make eye contact, and build confidence in social settings. These interactions help break down barriers, as students get to know teachers and peers they might not have otherwise met.

Busy Morning Prepping Coffee and getting labels on items

For students with special needs, the coffee cart is a safe space to step out of their comfort zone. They gain experience in problem-solving when unexpected issues arise, such as a shortage of supplies or a malfunctioning coffee maker. These challenges provide valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability, skills that will serve them well beyond the school environment.

Cultivating a Sense of Responsibility and Independence

Running the coffee cart also gives the students a sense of ownership and responsibility. The program is not just about performing tasks; it’s about understanding the whole process, from setting up in the morning to counting earnings at the end of the day. By being actively involved in every stage, the students develop a sense of pride in their work.

Teachers report that many of the students show a noticeable boost in their self-esteem after participating in the program. They become more independent and eager to take on new challenges, both inside and outside the classroom. Parents often express how the skills their children learn at the coffee cart translate into greater independence at home, whether it’s helping with chores or managing their own spending.

A Financial Success: Managing Profits and Reinvestment

The coffee cart has not only been a success in terms of skillbuilding but also financially. After covering the costs of supplies, the program generates a modest profit, which is reinvested into the project and the classroom activities throughout the year. The students, alongside their teachers, decide how to use the proceeds— sometimes choosing to upgrade equipment, purchase new supplies, or even plan a special outing as a reward for their hard work.

This aspect of the program teaches the students about basic business principles, such as the importance of budgeting, reinvesting in the business, and understanding profit margins. They learn to appreciate the value of their work and how their efforts directly contribute to the success of their enterprise.

The Impact on the School Community

The coffee cart program has had a profound impact on the broader school community as well. It has become a symbol of inclusivity, demonstrating that every student has unique strengths to contribute. Teachers and students alike enjoy the opportunity to interact with the special needs students in a new and positive context, fostering a sense of unity across the school.

Looking to the Future: Expanding Opportunities

The Hico Steak Cook Off organization generously donated funds to support the building and upgrade of a new coffee cart for the special needs students, while a local resident volunteered their time and skills to construct the cart. This act of kindness from the small town reflects the deep sense of community and support that surrounds the program, emphasizing how local contributions play a crucial role in its success. The donations and volunteer efforts not only provided the students with a better cart but also reinforced the sense of unity and pride within the town, showing that everyone is invested in the students' growth and opportunities.

Mrs. Shelli Stegall, Hico ISD’s Superintendent and President of the Texas Steak Cook Off says, “The Screaming Bean is one of my favorite things at Hico High School! As superintendent, I see the joy this group brings to our district as they deliver their goodies. That joy comes from not only receiving the great food they provide, but mainly the smiling faces and precious souls making the deliveries. These kids absolutely love serving others and are a positive example for all Hico ISD students and staff. On behalf of the Texas Steak Cookoff, who sponsored the actual coffee cart, the Screaming Bean represents everything the Cookoff is about: Serving others, bringing joy and helping our school and community in any way that we can. Hico ISD and the Texas Steak Cookoff are extremely proud of these young people and the fantastic adults teaching them to reach their full potential through service.”

Brewing Confidence and Community, One Cup at a Time

The special needs coffee cart program is much more than a simple business—it’s a vehicle for learning, growth, and community-building. It provides special needs students with the chance to develop essential life skills, gain confidence, and prepare for the future, all while delivering a service that has become a cherished part of the school’s culture.

Mr. Philip Wade, Hico Secondary School’s Principal, says, “The Screaming Bean coffee cart is a big part of our school. These students are all smiles as they serve coffee and breakfast burritos to staff and students. Watching these kids engage with customers is a highlight of the day for everyone. These interactions create a great atmosphere. They also provide valuable life skills for the kids as they learn about cooking, food preparation, and service. It is one of the best activities we have at our school.”

The program has also inspired other initiatives within the district, such as snack shops and catering services, where special needs students are given the chance to participate in similar vocational training programs. It has become a model for how schools can create inclusive opportunities that empower students with special needs while providing services that benefit everyone.

The coffee cart project is a testament to the power of inclusion, showing that with the right support and a dash of creativity, we can create opportunities where everyone thrives. According to the kids' teacher, Natalie Schroeder, “The Screaming Bean started 6 years ago and has gotten better and better each year. The kids work so hard to prepare the food, make the coffee and that amazing coffee punch that you can’t get anywhere else! It’s all prepared with so much love. It is truly the highlight of their week and mine as well. The teachers, administrators and students give our kids so much love and support.

The new cart was donated by the Texas Steak Cook Off and built by Clint Rainwater. The students were so excited on delivery day!
Getting Ready to Roll Out

Gatesville ISD Success

Health and Safety

Gatesville ISD is known for its emphasis on safety. Even before the state mandated that security be present at every Texas campus, GISD had formed its own police department. With a dedicated police officer for each of the five campuses in GISD, the teachers and student body have a strong sense of security. In addition to the police force, a growing number of military veterans have formed the Friends on Duty program, which assists the police force with tasks such as checking doors and looking for suspicious activity. GISD passed all of the various door audits conducted by the state last year as well. GISD also places a heavy focus on social emotional learning and mental health. In addition to its own social workers and counselors, GISD partners with other entities such as Righteous Roots, Freedom Reins, and Central County Services to provide additional therapeutic services.

Helping Students and Families

GISD is proud to coordinate the annual Back-to-School Bash, which grows in size every summer. This past summer the following items were given to children: 347 pairs of shoes, 350 backpacks with supplies, 150 lunch kits, 75 haircuts, 46 physicals, and 45 vision/hearing screenings. The district also schedules dental screenings, flu shots, and other health related events throughout the year for students and staff. A new initiative is growing a school supply room that will help teachers and students who are in need of basic school supplies. Best of all, our high school transition students act as employees in the school supply room and fill order requests. GISD also pursued a program which allows all primary and elementary students to eat free in the cafeteria!

Academics

GISD offers advanced dual credit courses through the University of Texas On Ramps program. Students succeeding in these rigorous courses receive both high school credit and college credit at the prestigious University of Texas at Austin which is transferable to many other colleges and universities. GISD also offers multiple programs of study whereby students follow distinct pathways in high school that culminate in a practicum opportunity. For example, students may pursue courses in health science, culinary arts, graphic design, law enforcement, construction, welding, automotive technology, and much more. GISD is continuously adding innovative courses offered by the state. Just recently, GISD added marketing to the business pathway as well as speech & communication disorders to the human services strand. GHS also adds a variety of core courses as well including environmental systems in science and advanced quantitative reasoning in math.

Exciting Opportunities

GHS staff members are coordinating a trip to the historic Boston area for the summer of 2025. Students who have signed up to go on the trip will experience a rich array of history. Day 1 will include exploring Charlestown and visiting the New England Holocaust Memorial. Day 2 consists of visiting the Boston Tea Party ships and museum as well as a guided tour of Lexington and Concord. Day 3 includes more museums, a guided tour of Boston and Cambridge, a lobster tales boat cruise, and a theater performance. On Day 4, students will visit one of Salem's witch museums, the House of the Seven Gables, and take a duck boat tour. Finally, on Day 5 the students will tour Fenway Park and visit the Museum of Science.

A trip to New York City in the summer of 2026 is already in the

works. On Day 1, the group will arrive in NYC and take a walking tour of midtown (Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue). On Day 2, the group will visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the 9-11 Memorial.

On Day 3, there will be a guided sightseeing tour of NYC (Chinatown, Little Italy) including Times Square and a Broadway show. On Day 4, the group will see Central Park and the American Museum of Natural History. On Day 5, the group will take a tour of Madison Square Garden or Radio City Music Hall before departing for home.

Band

former award. Only roughly 2% of all the performances earn this distinguished honor! In recognition of this honor, each student is awarded a gold UIL State Champion medal. This makes the 4th Outstanding Performer from GHS Choir in the past 6 years.

Athletics

The Fighting Hornet football team were bi-district champions last season. A GHS student was also named as the Waco-Tribune Herald's 2024 Male Athlete of the Year and was voted the 11-4A defensive MVP his senior year. The Gatesville Volleyball team has entered the playoffs for 21 consecutive years. In recent years, GHS students have enjoyed great success even at the state level in sports such as cross country, tennis, and powerlifting.

The GHS Fighting Hornet Band has enjoyed back-to-back visits to the state marching contest. In 2022, the band had an 18th place finish, which was the highest in program history. However, the band returned to the Alamo Dome in 2023 and enjoyed a 12th place finish breaking the school record for the highest place in program history. That's 12th place out of approximately 230 4A bands. A member of the GHS band was named a Texas State Solo Ensemble Contest (TSSEC) Outstanding Performer. This is an equivalent to being named a State Champion. To be named an Outstanding Performer, students must be among the best of the approximately 25,000 musicians that judges hear each year. Less than 2% of students who perform solo performances in Texas receive this award.

Choir

The GHS choir had a student selected as an Outstanding Performer at the 2024 UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Competition. Eleven students from GHS Choir traveled to the Austin area to compete at the TSSEC. These students were chosen from approximately 100,000 musicians from around the state who qualified for TSSEC. Each judge can designate certain spectacular performances to receive an Outstanding Per-

The 2024 Hornet Baseball Team advanced three rounds deep into the postseason. The Hornets have advanced to the regional quarterfinals in each of the past 2 seasons.

Teacher Perks

GISD has joined the Teacher Incentive Allotment (TIA) program as a method to give teachers access to performance-based pay. Teachers who do well on their evaluations and have students do well on an approved assessment can earn one of three designations from the state: Recognized, Exemplary, or Master. Each designation pays the teacher an increasing amount of money. To become a part of the program, GISD submitted a detailed application. Selected teachers at the junior high and high school wanted to lead the piloting of this program. Another initiative that started this year is the addition of a 3 year old pre-k classroom that would be offered to staff children as well as students who have speech difficulties. We hired a professional teacher and an aide to teach the students.

The Power of Unity in the Community

Gatesville ISD and Mission Righteous Roots form partnership to address

teen vaping epidemic

Education is a shared responsibility that extends beyond the confines of the school. Teen vaping is a public health crisis that continues to have a negative impact on school academic performance worldwide. Gatesville ISD has embraced a new approach in hopes that by joining forces, schools and communities can work together to provide better opportunities, resources, and support for students, ultimately fostering an environment conducive to their success.

House Bill 114 became effective on September 1, 2023, increasing penalties for students found with a vape at school. If a student is found in possession of, using, selling, giving or delivering e-cigarettes on school property or at a school related event, the offense will result in mandatory Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) placement. The DAEP program serves as an alternative to traditional suspension, providing students with opportunity to address their behavior while continuing their education in a structured setting. Since the enforcement of the bill, it is reported over 13,000 students have been disciplined with DAEP in the largest five school districts of the Houston area. This contrasts with the 2.5 million middle and high school students who reported using e-cigarettes by the National Youth Tobacco survey in 2022.

Effective at the beginning of the school year, Gatesville ISD fully enforced and implemented this law due to the growing concern of e-cigarette usage among students with efforts to promote a healthier, safer environment for all members of the school community. The district’s primary goal is to ensure the well-being and academics of students. GISD takes great pride in valuing the partnership and input of community and parents and realizes that it truly takes a village to raise a child. Protecting children from vaping requires a collective effort from the entire community, including parents, teachers, and healthcare providers to educate and support students about the dangers of vaping.

Superintendent Barrett Pollard tasked district supportive service personnel within the School Community Guidance Center (SCGC), along with administrators, to create a Drug and Alcohol

Task Force, specifically in the Fall of 2024. The recommendations provided by the Task Force guided the direction of this prevention and intervention plan. For effective implementation, GISD has included a strategy to embrace a vape-free school initiative through partnership with Mission Righteous Roots of Gatesville, TX. Righteous Roots is a faith based nonprofit social service agency in the heart of Central Texas serving Coryell, Bell, Bosque, Hamilton, Lampasas, and McLennan counties since 2018. The agency is dedicated to strengthening and empowering individuals, families and communities by providing accessible resources, education, and advocacy at no cost. Through their substance abuse recovery program, Mission Righteous Roots has adopted CATCH My Breath’s peer-led teaching approach that empowers students with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions about e-cigarettes and resist social pressures to vape. Informed by tobacco youth prevention researchers and practitioners, years of real world implementation, and a youth advisory board, it is the only schoolbased vaping prevention program proven to reduce the likelihood of vaping among youth. In addition to this educational and informal approach, the Righteous Roots team visits GISD’s DAEP campus weekly and provides Social Emotional Learning (SEL). SEL utilizes restorative best practices through implementation of support circles that provides an alternative to unhealthy decision making for youth in transition allowing students to build relationships, repair harm, and create a positive school climate. The use of restorative circles assists in enhancing and developing healthy communication strategies and building positive relationships. Mission Righteous Roots is committed to collaboratively working with and alongside GISD to provide districtwide comprehensive, evidence based, substance prevention programming that will increase protective factors and reduce risk factors in children and youth. The teaming of both GISD and Mission Righteous Roots has brought much excitement to the local community of Gatesville.

My Journey Through Sports and Life

Istarted playing volleyball in second grade, attending various camps that ignited my passion for sports. Over the years, athletics have taught me determination, discipline, and the true meaning of teamwork. My teammates have become more than just people I play with; they are lifelong friends. We first met at the babysitter's, and our bond has only strengthened as we’ve pushed each other to be our best, both on and off the court. As seniors, we recently celebrated our fourth district volleyball championship, and we’re headed into playoffs once again. Our victories are a testament to the countless hours spent supporting one another and striving toward shared goals.

In addition to volleyball and basketball, FFA has played significant roles in my life since third grade when I began showing pigs. My breeder, Dustin Shuffler, has been an incredible source of support, ensuring I have the best pigs and guiding me through every show. Through FFA, I’ve learned the importance of responsibility, diligence, and resilience. Caring for my animals and preparing them for show day has taught me how to balance my commitments effectively.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, friends, and my coach, Coach Vaden, who has been with me since my freshman year. Coach Vaden has been a guiding force, helping me grow as both an athlete and a person. My family and friends have been my backbone, cheering me on and providing strength when challenges arose.

My high school journey has been a balancing act between sports, academics, and FFA, but it has also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported me along the way—from my breeder and coach to my family and friends.
