FROM THE
EDITOR
Our Spring
EDITOR & PUBLISHER
Tina Eichner BUSINESS MANAGER
Pat Eichner ART DIRECTOR/DESIGN
Our forever changed world continues to inch toward a return to “normal,” … whatever that is? As I watch the coverage of the horror of the war in Ukraine, and scratch my head at the overwhelming and continuing economic effects of the pandemic (an unprecedented employment landscape, wild inflation, lingering supply chain issues, and skyrocketing housing costs), I remind myself that the turmoil of our time is unfortunately just the current snapshot of the “normal” state of humanity for thousands of years. All of history is marked with tragedy and difficulty. We all may wish to live in utopia, but that is simply not the state of our great big world. Because of this, we must strive to find beauty and happiness in the small things that surround us and appreciate goodness when we have it. And our community provides this. Join in and let there be a ripple effect. I invite you to explore these pages for details on dozens of fabulous community events to carry you through the spring and summer. Women Supporting Women Last month I was honored to be one of the speakers at the first Pilot Your Own Success Women’s Networking Lunch sponsored by the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Leads Group Business Ladies Inspiring Success (BLIS). Our Broomfield™ Magazine was a proud sponsor and I had a chance to offer a few thoughts about Women and Leadership in the opening comments. I shared the stage with Keynote Speaker U.S. Army Black Hawk Pilot Elizabeth McCormick (Soar2Success). She was so amazing! This was a fun event with great energy and a room packed full of 120 inspiring local business ladies. I can’t wait until next year! Congrats BLIS Ladies on a great luncheon! Thank you to Hollan-Dazed for catering and The Establishment at Bradburn Village for hosting. Attendees also enjoyed sweet treats from Chik Fil’A, and a happy hour after at 5280 Burger Bar hosted by Our Broomfield. Passages I want to acknowledge and congratulate two great friends of Our Broomfield as they move into new roles in the community this month. Emily Crouse-Joo has been the Community Engagement Manager at Broomfield FISH for many years. She is an ever-present smiling face and helping hand in our community, and has been a powerhouse for FISH. Emily is taking a new role as Assistant Vice President at First Western Trust, but looks forward to continuing to collaborate in Broomfield. Emily was one of the first people to call me and cheer me on when we launched the magazine two years ago and I truly value her friendship and support. Likewise, Sam Taylor, President and CEO of the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce was one of our earliest supporters and champions. Sam has been with the Chamber since July of 2017, working to provide programs to support a healthy and connected Broomfield business community. He will now serve as director of community and employment services for Imagine!, a nonprofit serving needs for people with disabilities. Best wishes to both Emily and Sam and I look forward to continuing to work with each of you in your new roles! Thanks for reading,

BUSY FAMILIES
Introvert The Amazing
By Lisa Payne
It often feels like we live in an extrovert’s world. They appear to have all the fun, they are gregarious, and their boisterous personalities allow them to gain attention, popularity, and promotions. You may have even worried about your own child if they are quiet. But guess what? Introverts have an incredible list of qualities that are often left in the shadows, and today and hopefully every day going forward, they will get more of the limelight. One of the biggest ways that introverts excel is they are genuinely attentive listeners and are able to form deep relationships with others. They aren’t waiting for the other person to stop talking so that they can speak. Instead, they are taking mental notes of what the other person is trying to say and asking good questions. They are excellent secret keepers and people usually confide in them. Naturally they prefer quality friendships over quantity, so they choose trustworthy and loyal friends and will be your friend for life. This also makes them low-maintenance friends and colleagues. It may be easy to judge introverts for not speaking up in the classroom, meetings or in social situations, but they will never be labeled as needy, attention-seeking or disruptive. They think before they speak and are respectful and polite of others and their space. And since they aren’t faced with the drama that can go along with constant socializing, they tend to feel happy being exactly who they are. Introverts also have original thoughts and creative minds. They don’t go with the group consensus to fit in and aren’t influenced by what’s trending. And since they appreciate quiet time alone, their minds have the space to be stimulated by creative thoughts and ideas. They find ways to solve problems and many become entrepreneurs. And speaking of business, introverts are excellent leaders and employees. As a leader they think before they speak so their words have great impact; they use caution when making a decision and they are able to problem solve more effectively because of their quiet mind. As an employee they work effectively by themselves which means they need less supervision and are trusted to carry out a task because they aren’t distracted by excessive socializing.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2022
Introverts also have a superpower called observation skills. While it may look like they are sitting quietly while others are talking over each other and processing out loud, they are actually noticing things others are not. They are soaking up information which is helping their critical thinking skills. They also can read a room, and notice body language and facial expression which makes them excellent interpersonal communicators and extremely empathic. Being an extrovert myself (actually more of an ambivert which is half extrovert half introvert), I ended up marrying an introvert. I adore and respect his qualities. I came to realize that my personality needed his grounding nature, his loyal heart, and his level-headed demeanor. I am a better person because of him. Hug and appreciate your introvert people today and every day! Lisa Payne writes about home, family, and food. You can reach her at paynefam6@gmail.com.

Take Care of Your Hearing for Improved Health, Life Quality, and Relationships
Family Hearing of Broomfield Recognizes Better Hearing Month By Missy Ruzicka
May is Better Hearing month and what better way to improve the relationships around you then to make sure you are doing everything you can to hear the world around you. I was lucky enough to have a conversation with Dr. Georgianna Hearne, of Family Hearing in Boulder. She is a Doctor of Audiology who enjoys getting to know her patients, helping them on their better hearing journey, and building individualized treatment plans. Did you know that hearing loss is the biggest modifiable risk factor of dementia and Alzheimers? Even with mild hearing loss, you are at a higher risk for developing dementia. Family Hearing suggests yearly hearing appointments even without hearing difficulties. Dr. Hearne said often people don’t realize they are having hearing loss, and treating it proactively can aid in optimal brain health and set patients up for the most success down the road. To start you can set up an appointment with a qualified professional at Family Hearing. They will go in-depth about your hearing history, and how your hearing is impacting your day-today life. They will then evaluate all three major parts of your ear to see if your hearing is normal, if there is a problem, and where it is taking place. Tests involve a visual look in the ear, test of your eardrum, and a sound test where you push a button when you hear a series of beeps. They will go over the results of the tests with you and build your treatment plan if necessary. I know a lot of people who just ‘deal’ with hearing issues because they don’t want those dreaded hearing aids. Technology has come a long way since our grandma’s hearing aid that sang to us on holidays with horrible feedback noises. The hearing aids available today come in all sizes for all types of
16
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2022
activity levels. The major misconception about hearing aids is it means you are old, which is just not true, they are for all ages and all levels of hearing loss. Hearing aids continue to become smaller and smaller but pack more power so you can properly treat hearing loss but have discreet options. I just got back from vacation with my aunt and her hearing aides were attached to her phone so she could turn them down when we were at a loud venue. How cool is that? I didn’t even know she had them in, they were so small. I asked Dr. Hearne what she wanted to make sure our readers understand about hearing care and she said she can’t emphasize enough how important it is to get your hearing checked every year. There are several treatable reasons for hearing loss, but if you need a hearing aid they are smaller and clearer now than ever before. A main reason for hearing loss is noise exposure, so if you are around machinery, loud concerts or firearms, wear proper ear protection to help keep your ears safe! I’d like to thank Dr. Hearne for her time and knowledge sharing for this article. To learn more about hearing care and Better Hearing Month, visit https://www.familyhearingco.com/.

Memorial Day Observance to Cap a Month of Military Appreciation in May By Kristen Beckman
Several Broomfield departments have teamed up to put a spotlight on military service during the month of May. The Broomfield Library, Veterans Museum Broomfield, and the Broomfield Development, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office have joined the Broomfield Workforce Center to plan veteran-focused events, including a job fair, resource fairs showcasing resources available to veterans, and an appreciation luncheon at the Senior Center. The month will be capped off by the city’s annual Memorial Day Celebration and Picnic on May 30. A proclamation declaring the month of May as Veteran Appreciation Month for the City and County of Broomfield was presented to the Broomfield City Council at a meeting in April. The proclamation encourages all Broomfield residents to display the U.S. flag at their homes and businesses to honor veterans and military families in May.
Memorial Day The Veterans Museum Broomfield will host the annual Memorial Day Celebration and Picnic at 11:00 a.m. on May 30 at County Commons Park. The event will feature the North Metro Fire Rescue District and Broomfield Police Department Honor Guard; a speech by Major General Mason C. Whitney, former adjutant general of the Colorado National Guard; and patriotic music from the Broomfield Civic Chorus and Rocky Mountain Brassworks. There will be activities and displays provided by local re-enactor groups as well as a flyover, and hamburgers for sale from the Broomfield Lions Club. Memorial Day has been observed since the end of the Civil War, when union soldiers and sailors along with other Americans began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags in May. Although it became a legal holiday in many localities during the ensuing decades, it did not become a federal holiday until 1971, when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act that established the Memorial Day holiday on the last Monday of May.

Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2022
Flag Retirement In addition, the museum and North Metro will be collecting U.S. flags that need to be retired throughout the month in anticipation of its flag retirement ceremony in June. The ceremony, scheduled for June 11 at 11:00 a.m., will retire flags according to military tradition with the assistance of museum staff, community members, and firefighters. A hot dog picnic will also be provided.
Doolittle Commemoration The museum is also marking the 80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, America’s response to the attack on Pearl Harbor. On April 18, 1942, U.S. Army Air Force Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle led a squadron of 16 B-25B bombers and 80 airmen on a mission to strike the Japanese mainland. The bombers took off from the USS Hornet – the first time bombers had ever launched from a carrier – and flew more than 600 miles to drop bombs on targets in Tokyo and other Japanese cities. Because it was impossible for the planes to return to the carrier following the raid, they were instructed to crash land in China. Many of the pilots were rescued by Chinese villagers, although some died and some were captured and executed by Japanese troops. Two Coloradans were part of the raid: Lieutenant William K. Bower, pilot of Plane #12, and Lieutenant Harry C. McCool, navigator aboard Plane #4. In addition, the Captain of the USS Gwin, an escort vessel for the Hornet, was John B. Fellows, father of Mike Fellows, a past president of the Veterans Museum Broomfield.
In April, the museum opened a new temporary exhibit commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid. Besides providing a historical context to the raid, and a salute to Lieutenants Bower, who lived in Boulder after the war, and McCool, who was born in La Junta, the exhibit will also feature a 4-foot-long scale model of the Hornet, built by master model maker Jerry Gavaldon. The exhibit will be up until mid-summer. May 2022 | Our Broomfield™ Magazine

CONGRATS CLASS OF 2022!
Iris Stanfill Broomfield High School
The first time I ever set foot inside of Broomfield High School, I was lost. Quite literally, lost. I had seven classes, each denoted by a different room number, and I had no idea where any of them were. I remember, before every one of my classes, I had to ask one of the older-looking students in the hallways if they could point me in the right direction. What I remember far more than the twinge of embarrassment I felt revealing my not-so-great sense of direction to the juniors and seniors at the time, is that every single one of them stopped to help me. They all had their own places to go, their own math and science and history classes to attend, and still, they took the time to walk with me, to lend me a smile and a hand.
Editor’s Note: In the spirit of providing opportunities to give our young people a voice and a platform, Our Broomfield™ is pleased to bring back a tradition. Each year, we look forward to inviting one senior from each of our three high schools to share a reflection on growing up in Broomfield and their high school career on behalf of their class. We thank this year’s seniors for their thought provoking columns, and the entire staff of Our Broomfield sends all 2022 graduates sincere congratulations and best wishes for the future.
Truthfully, it’s because of them that I knew, from the very beginning, that everything was going to be okay. It’s because of this unspoken yet unbreakable community of peers that is BHS, that even the most unmanageable of challenges are overcomeable.
It’s okay to be lost. It’s okay to give yourself the space to try new clubs and sports and classes and clothes, throughout your high school experience and beyond. It’s okay to ask one of your fellow students which way it is to the 500 hallway.
The class of 2022, collectively, and as individuals, has been faced with a plethora of challenges and uncertainty. And I truly believe that it is not in spite of this, but because of it, that we’ve had the opportunity to find meaning in our community, meaning in each other, and meaning in ourselves. That is what our upcoming graduation ceremony is celebrating. Not just the end of these last four years, but the last four years themselves. Graduation is about celebrating every test taken, every spring musical and sporting event, every positive change made and new voice heard, and every face you’ve gotten to know—including your own.
I would be remiss if I didn’t pay forward, on behalf of our senior class, the little pieces of advice that I’ve picked up from the people I’ve been lucky enough to know throughout my last four years at BHS … It’s okay to be lost. It’s okay to give yourself the space to try new clubs and sports and classes and clothes, throughout your high school experience and beyond. It’s okay to ask one of your fellow students which way it is to the 500 hallway. I promise that one day, you’ll find yourself on the walk there. This fall I will attend the University of Denver to study political science and international studies, with my eyes set on a future career in government or law.

CONGRATS CLASS OF 2022!
Joseph Silva Holy Family High School
As I near graduation, it’s difficult not to reminisce about the myriad of memories that I made at Holy Family High School. To know that such a vibrant and exciting stage in my life will soon be over is certainly bittersweet, but it compels me to be thankful for all the lessons I learned along the way and all the relationships I was able to build. I’m proud to have spent my high school years at a Catholic school celebrating its 100th year of serving students and their families across the front range. The experience I received at Holy Family is no doubt unique because of its focus on cultivating the mind, body, and soul of every student. I’m confident that I was able to succeed because of the community of teachers and students around me who pushed me to strive for academic excellence. Surrounding yourself with intelligent individuals will always motivate you to be the best version of yourself, and that’s what Holy Family did for me. At the same time, athletics was a large part of the last four years of my life. Many of my fondest memories come from the hours I spent in the gym or on the track with my teammates. I’m thankful I was able to have such a positive athletic experience while simultaneously working hard academically. But perhaps the most integral part of my Holy Family experience was my growth as a responsible and respectful individual; no doubt spurred on by the faith life that teems from within the Holy Family community. The teachers wish to educate and help in the formation of every student as competent and accountable adults. Smaller class sizes allowed me to form personal relationships with many teachers I’m sure I will stay in contact with long after I graduate.
I can say confidently that Holy Family has prepared me for the next stage of my life. As a former four-sport athlete who pursued a rigorous course load, I learned the great importance of time management and prioritizing my activities correctly. These are invaluable skills that I’m sure will serve me well in the future.

CONGRATS CLASS OF 2022!
Anoushka Jani Legacy High School
Each year, Legacy High School chooses a value that we would like to embody. This year’s theme is “community.” Legacy High School is a community, and a strong one at that. My peers and I entered our freshman year feeling a wide range of emotions. Some of us were buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the next four years, and some of us … not so much. I was very nervous that first week of high school, but that was before I knew how many meaningful connections would be made and life-long memories created.
Being able to bond with my peers within Legacy and Broomfield these past four years has been one of my greatest honors. I am so grateful to be a part of this community. I will take all the lessons that I learned from growing up in Broomfield and experiences as a Legacy Bolt to CU Boulder this Fall...
Freshman year, we were collecting the building blocks of our community by filling the stands during football games, attending our first Homecoming dance, and taking new classes. We explored our interests by joining clubs, making new friends, and adjusting to high school. Over the course of high school, we’ve settled into being a member of the Legacy and Broomfield community. We took our first AP classes, participated in music, art, theater, or a new sport while attending many social events at Legacy. We began to develop ourselves as individuals, part of a greater whole. The Legacy community. In the midst of a global pandemic, we continued our education with Zoom classes, Schoology assignments, and long hours in our rooms on laptops. Dealing with the pandemic’s fallout was not part of our high school plan. However, it demonstrated our community’s resilience as we leaned on each other for support during a very difficult time for everyone. Resiliency through adversity made us a community in the truest sense of the word. This past year, we gave it our all to make it to the finish line of high school. Finally, we were seniors! We challenged ourselves in and outside the classroom, and maximized all the experiences we missed out on the past two years, while continuing to build this sense of community. We experienced our first Prom, and graduation is a few short weeks away. This community we have built will last a lifetime. Being able to bond with my peers within Legacy and Broomfield these past four years has been one of my greatest honors. I am so grateful to be a part of this community. I will take all the lessons that I learned from growing up in Broomfield and experiences as a Legacy Bolt to CU Boulder this Fall as a Boettcher Scholar studying Neuroscience.

ESCAPE What makes us different?
Our Connection to Broomfield Olson Outdoors is Broomfield’s premier lawn care company. Founded in 2014 by Brandon Olson, Olson Outdoors has strived to provide an impeccable service while contributing to the greater Broomfield community. This past winter Olson partnered with the Brunner Farm and donated the Olson Outdoor Teaching Garden. The garden will house a curriculum led by master gardeners who will guide volunteers through the basics of growing various crops. The structure is fully ADA compliant and will fulfill a key educational component for the Brunner Farm as well as the city of Broomfield.
Olson Outdoors is a local Broomfield company that takes quality and craftsmanship seriously. Four years ago, after soliciting their clients for feedback, they changed their business model based on a simple observation… traditional rider and stand-on variety commercial mowers are not suited for standard residential homes. They are too heavy and are prone to uneven cuts, clumps, and property damage. Despite their efficiency, the larger mowers do not provide the superior cut they were looking for. Olson Outdoors adopted a smaller walk-behind mower that transformed the final product, leaving an evenly cut yard clear of excess clippings. These clippings are collected and fed to our very own herd of goats. So if you are looking for a superior weekly lawn mowing service, reach out to Olson Outdoors today. And yes, they do have a full-time local office staff that will answer your phone call and email!

Brandon Olson grew up in Colorado and earned a bachelor’s degree from Fort Lewis College in anthropology. From there he earned a master’s degree in archaeology from Sheffield University, a master’s degree in history from the University of North Dakota, a master’s degree in classics from the Pennsylvania State University, and finally a Ph.D. in archaeology from Boston University. After completing his graduate studies, Brandon moved back to Colorado with his wife and kids and established Olson Outdoors. ACADEMY OFFERS CITIZENS A PEEK INSIDE THE
BROOMFIELD POLICE OPERATIONS By Kristen Beckman
A group of Broomfield residents will spend several weeks over the summer learning the ins and outs of the Broomfield Police Department during its BPD - Inside Citizens’ Academy. The 15-week academy began in March when about three dozen Broomfield citizens were informally sworn in, received a syllabus and workbook, and began learning the history and basic structure of the department starting with a tour of headquarters. The Academy includes three fiveweek blocks with breaks in between each block and culminates in a graduation ceremony in September.
34
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2022
The first block covers topics such as patrol, dispatch, animal services, code compliance, K-9, and traffic. The second block includes classes covering crisis negotiations, crime scene investigations, body-worn cameras, internal affairs and recruitment, as well as victim services, police chaplains, and public information. The third block covers the detention center, including emergency response and transport, as well as taser training, a shooting simulator, and a police driving course where students learn what it’s like to stop and approach a vehicle safely. Classes usually consist of a classroom component and an interactive or hands-on component and are taught by subject matter experts within the department. Rachel Haslett, BPD’s public information officer and the primary organizer of the academy, said the program has been offered for about 15 years and about 30-35 students typically enroll. Classes of this size are ideal for the combination of classroom learning and hands-on experiences the students participate in. Although the time commitment for participants is substantial, Haslett said the department has never had trouble filling a class. In some cases, people who are interested in a career in law enforcement apply to the academy so they can learn about the many different roles available beyond patrol and dispatch. Applicants must pass a background check because the academy provides access to secure areas in the department’s facilities. Police departments across the country have offered citizens academies for years. Haslett said it provides a great opportunity for the department to bring in community members and encourage them to ask questions and break down the invisible barriers between law enforcement and the community. “Sometimes our residents are surprised at how complex things are and that there’s so much more that goes into everything than what you see on TV,” said Haslett. “It’s kind of breaking down those stereotypes and showing what really happens. We have great discussions and our community members

become ambassadors for us and can go out and share what they’ve learned with the community.” Christina Surprenant is one of the students attending the 2022 academy. She said she signed up in part because she wanted to know more about how the police department operates and how as a citizen she can be an ambassador for the department. Surprenant said she is looking forward to learning more about patrol cars, body-worn cameras, and the detention center. “I feel very responsible to learn more about the police department that serves me, my family and friends, and this community,” said Surprenant. “I feel that as a citizen, I should understand and know more about the police department so I can be an ambassador and hopefully help people feel like our police department is approachable. We owe it, in my opinion, to our police officers to learn more about how we can serve them and what we as citizens need to be understanding of so we can be there for them as much as they are there for us.” Applications for the academy open in February each year. Information about how to apply will be available on the department’s website and social media channels.
The department also offers the BPD - Inside Teen Academy in June for teens aged 16 to 18 years old. The one-week course is largely organized by school resource officers, who also do the majority of the teaching along with contributions from subject matter experts within the department. Applications for the teen academy close in early May.

Finding Childcare is Fast, Convenient with
with Broomfield’s Childcare Connect By Bette Erickson
It used to be challenging and somewhat of a hassle searching for childcare options. Who? Where? Hours? Location? But all that’s changed with Broomfield Childcare Connect. With just a few clicks (and at no charge) parents and guardians can assess childcare options, conduct interviews, and make a decision. As we know, finding quality, trustworthy childcare is one of the most important decisions we’ll make as parents. “I’ve used that website before and it’s great,” explained Thornton resident Teresa Walker, who works in Broomfield. “I’m so happy with my in-home provider. Broomfield Childcare Connect gave me the name, location, phone number, and email address of my licensed childcare mom.” So, I gave it a try. I went about exploring the process one afternoon and here’s what I learned about finding all types of childcare, all in one place. Visit www.broomfieldchildcareconnect.org and key in your youngsters’ ages and the city or zip code in which you need childcare. As an example, I chose Broomfield and indicated that I need childcare for a toddler (18-35 months) and school-age child (5+ years). Click on submit and voilà! The results yielded some two dozen

childcare centers and home-based childcare options, including contact information. The website allows visitors to explore physical childcare programs based on location and children’s age. Or, it even allows the opportunity to explore virtual childcare programs. Website filters allow the ability to choose full or part-time care, before and after-school availability and to find childcare providers that have openings right now. Providers are regularly updating information to showcase available openings.

It’s easy, also, to quickly find providers accepting new families. Visitors to the site can even save and create a list of favorite childcare options to refer back to at a later date. Don’t forget to create an account on that website to save your list of favorite childcare providers. All that’s needed is your name and email address. Search all available options, including full-time, part-time, before and after school care, and summer camp programs. The website offers an opportunity for families making use of the site and childcare providers listed on the site, to report an issue, if necessary. Lil’ Friends Serves Unique Respite Care Needs in Broomfield with Expanding Programs to Impact More Children By Missy Ruzicka
Caregivers are some of the most selfless people in our community. They give 100% of themselves to care for a loved one who depends solely on their care. Parents of kids with developmental disabilities are some of the hardest working caregivers around for their job is 24/7. What better way to give support to those who work tirelessly for others then to step in and give them a break. Respite care is a special name for a short-term break for just such caregivers. Even the most dedicated parents need a break from time to time and Lil’ Friends is here to give them the relief they need. We are so lucky here in Broomfield to have two friends, Shelly Cox and Ange Shores, who saw the need in our community and had unique abilities to fill that very need. These ladies saw a way to make a difference in Broomfield by caring for and supporting both children and caregivers. Lil’ Friends is a place where kids ages 3-18 with identified physical and developmental needs can play, have fun, and socialize while getting therapies from people who are specially trained to their individual needs. Lil’ Friends has partnered with the wonderful Bal Swan Children’s Center for the use of their large gym and warm water pool on Saturdays. They offer two sessions; morning and afternoon for respite care along with physical and occupational therapy treatments, all while the kids are playing with their friends in a trusted and safe environment. Lil’ Friends also offers limited in-home respite care when indicated through a screening process.
42
Our Broomfield™ Magazine | May 2022
While Lil’ Friends is in the business of giving, they also have some needs. They are working with the 2 Angels Foundation to get much needed adaptive bikes and equipment for their kids to use, while also raising scholarship funds for families who don’t have insurance to cover respite care. Along with Bal Swan, Lil’ Friends also partners with Friends of Broomfield to help bridge the gap that exists between kids going to Bal Swan and joining Friends of Broomfield when they are older. This summer Friends and Lil’ Friends will team up for a Summer Camp, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with adventures including trips to the Bay Aquatic Park, Chippers Bowling Lanes, days at our beautiful Broomfield parks, and even getting to try out some local restaurants. Lil’ Friends knows how important it is to have educated, specialty trained staff on hand to not only work with kids but build special relationships. They have partnered with Regis University’s Health and Exercise program to get the best interns, and they have been known to keep the really good ones who love their jobs. Just a glance at some of the talented people working with these kids and you know your child is in a safe loving environment. They have certified Occupational Therapists, Certified Nurses Aides, Registered Nurses, Physical Therapists, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants, and Speech Pathologists who all share the love of working with children and have found a place at Lil’ Friends, where kids grow together. A Day Trip to
Mt. Galbraith By Bette Erickson
Easy choice: The sometimes steep, sometimes rocky and narrow trail encircling Mt. Galbraith’s 7,200-foot summit overlooks the City of Golden and North Table Mountain in Jefferson County Open Space. Photo by Bette Erickson.
P
rospectors from all over the world flocked to Colorado’s mountains after gold was found in 1858. Historical records indicate that three years later mines were producing an estimated 150,000 ounces of gold annually. When the supply dwindled in the late 1860s, miners gradually left the state or opted to mine silver, zinc, and lead. At what was once called Golden Gate City in 1859, now sits some 871 acres making up Mount Galbraith Park in Jefferson County Open Space. The 4.7 miles of hiker-only trails lure visitors back again and again. To start the hike, grab a map from the trailhead kiosk. Walk south on a narrow trail that wiggles through a forest on a gradual ascent. You’ll gain most of the 525 vertical feet along this 1.3-mile footpath. You’ll then be presented with a four-way intersection. Do not take the Nightbird Gulch Trail that drops down on your left — that leads to neighborhood access. Instead, take the Mt. Galbraith Loop Trail either right or left. It circles around the mountain, but doesn’t really lead to the actual summit, although pretty close. At one point, halfway through the loop, look for a good spot just off the trail to sit under the shade trees and take in the views. Follow the loop around to the intersection to make your way back to the parking area. It’s sufficient to only carry a day-pack for this short hike. Although be sure to include the essentials in your pack: water, sunblock, first aid, snacks, and an extra jacket. The flora found along the route range from the bizarre to the beautiful, and woody and flowering plants are well represented. Throughout the area visitors are treated to the distinctive pink and purple plumes of flowering fireweed. Native Americans have traditionally used this plant to treat bruises and infection.

IF YOU GO … To the trailhead: From SH 128 in Broomfield, drive south 11 miles on SH 93. Turn west (right) on Golden Gate Canyon Road about 1.5 miles to Mt. Galbriath Park. Distance: 2.9 miles Difficulty: Easy Elevation gain: About 525 feet Dogs: Yes, on leash Information: Jefferson County Open Space 303-271-5925
It’s a pleasant trail, however, you really don’t escape the rush and hum of the neighboring highways (I-70 and SH 93) until you reach the highest point along the loop. There, you can enjoy the quiet, maybe sitting on a boulder and enjoying a snack. A clean restroom, large kiosk, brochures, and maps next to a chirping little creek greet you at the trailhead. IF THEY BUILD IT, THEY WILL
EAT By Lisa Payne
Who is with me here? You spend your precious time putting together a delicious dinner for your family, all the while imagining with anticipation the loving accolades that are surely coming your way when your family sits down to eat. They are going to oooooh and ahhhhh and tell you what a wonderful parent you are and that you should be on the Food Network (Or maybe you will be happy with a simple thank you). And you are shocked when they say things like “what is that green thing,” or “I’m not eating that,” and “I’m not in the mood for this.” It is probably the 100th time this has happened, but your heart sinks like it is the first time. It makes cooking zero fun. How do you cook for so many different taste buds under one roof? You let them build it themselves! I have become a fan of this lately. I am even writing a cookbook around this concept. It works perfectly on so many levels and for every single meal, even dessert. Here is a recipe that works great for family dinner, feeding a crowd or even for a graduation party. And I am going to tell you the shortcuts so that you aren’t really cooking anything at all. All of this is available prepared at your grocery store. Just provide ingredients you know your family will love. Here are some ideas, but change them up so that every taste bud under your roof is happy. (Whole Foods has an amazing salad bar where you can get so many topping ideas and bring home a little of each favorite).
