EDITOR FROM THE Our Pets

What a response! We received more pet photos than ever before for this year's Our Broomfield Pet photo contest! Hundreds! The decisions were tough. Throughout this issue you will see many of our favorites including our first ever llama and horse! I always dust off the photo of my own favorite, Ollie, for this issue. That's him in the photo with me above. The most beautiful, loyal, sweet black lab you ever met! But I think that is what we all think about our own pet - that they are the best.

I want to thank LaTrice Brewster and Horizons North Credit Union for sponsoring this year's contest and providing some fun prizes for our winners. You can also read about Pet Insurance and learn more about this important resource for your pet on page 26 - and Horizons North is now offering this valuable product!

It's fall ya'll. I know this is a favorite time of year for many. The warmth and richness of the colors, smells, and tastes of autumn help build anticipation for the holidays to come. This month we preview some of the great local events of the season, offer places to get a last look at fall leaves, and share some pumpkin recipes to warm you - including a tasty treat for your pup.

I am excited to announce the "premiere" of a new column written by my sister, Andrea Wallace, that we have dubbed Suburban Farm to Table. This year she and her husband transformed their Broomfield yard to include gorgeous and plentiful garden beds! The solution is so creative and provided an amazing harvest to be enjoyed throughout the winter. Andrea is gifted in the kitchen and in future issues we will learn about sourdough, canning, sauces, and more. I am excited to share her talents. Get a first sample of some of her creative homemaking and cooking on page 38.

Also, turn to pages 28-29 for an early look at the plans to update and transform the Flatirons Mall area. Exciting changes are on the horizon!

This issue is jam packed with great information and heartwarming smiles. So grab a fresh coffee or cup of tea and stay awhile! We are glad to have you and thank you for making us your Broomfield community information source!

BUSY FAMILIES

Pet Companionship Brings Joy and So Much More

n a world that often feels overwhelming and disconnected, pets offer us something that is sometimes hard to find: unconditional love, unwavering loyalty, and a source of joy that transcends the challenges of everyday life. They have been referred to as angels on earth and the closest living thing to God. I am a pet owner and I believe these thoughts to be true.

There is an emotional foundation to pet ownership. The second you bring home your new family member, there is a sense of purpose and routine that can anchor the most chaotic household. The simple act of caring for another living being creates structure, responsibility, and meaning. Pets can be best friends to the elderly and those living alone. And it doesn’t hurt to be greeted at the end of a long day with the unbridled enthusiasm that can only come from a pet. Day after day. Without any expectations in return.

Did you know that daily interactions with pets releases oxytocin and serotonin? This is a natural antidote to stress, anxiety, and depression which is taking a toll on people all over the world. And it is yours to receive by caring for these incredible creatures.

Besides all of that, the emotional support that pets provide extends way beyond companionship. They offer a non-judgmental presence during difficult times, serving as confidants who listen without criticism and advice. Many pet owners say they feel less lonely and more emotionally stable when their pet is by their side. I love seeing pets in schools with the students. The emotional support can be invaluable.

Pets can literally save human lives through their abilities and intuitive connections with their owners. Service dogs are a great example of having life-saving potential. They are trained to guide people who are blind through busy streets, alert deaf people of important sounds, and provide stability to those with mobility difficulties. If you have epilepsy, seizure-alert dogs can detect an oncoming seizure before they even occur so that you can safely get medical attention.

Psychiatric service dogs have given veterans with PTSD a new lease on life by waking them from nightmares, acting as a

barrier in crowded spaces, and providing a calming presence during panic attacks. They are practically a living medical device to people who struggle with daily life. They also have an olfactory system about 10,000 times more sensitive than humans and have been known to sniff out chemical changes in your body associated with medical conditions. It’s truly incredible.

Though I have never been myself, I drive by dog parks all the time and love to see the sense of community it can provide for the pet owners. And of course the dogs are living their best lives with so many furry friends to smell and play with.

At the end of the day, pets remind us of life’s simple pleasures; eating, napping, enjoying playtime with others, and living in the moment. May we all be reminded to slow down and live life with purpose and unconditional acceptance.

Snow Pals Volunteers Make a Difference for Residents

Each winter, Snow Pals volunteers take to the sidewalks to shovel snow for neighbors in need. These volunteers provide a critical service, especially for seniors in Broomfield.

Snow Pals volunteers shovel sidewalks, porches, and driveways of residents in need, and clear these areas within 24 hours after a snowstorm. Clearing snow from these areas allows seniors to safely enter and exit their homes for appointments and errands (slipping on ice is a genuine fear for seniors), provides a safe way for medical personnel to enter the home for routine and emergency care, and helps seniors remain in compliance with the city municipal code, taking away that worry that often accompanies a snowstorm.

Not all residents who need assistance are seniors. Some Snow Pals participants could have medical conditions that prohibit them from engaging in physically demanding activity, while others provide 24-hour care to their loved ones, leaving them without the time necessary to complete outdoor chores.

In short, the Snow Pals program has the benefit of continually building community.

The Broomfield Snow Pals program was created several years ago to fill these gaps whenever possible. The Snow Pals program connects local volunteers with neighbors who need snow shoveling support in the winter months. The program brings neighbors together and ensures residents of Broomfield receive the support they need to care for their homes while staying safe at the same time.

One of the most inspiring things about the Snow Pals program is the relationships formed between volunteers and their neighbors. While not a program

requirement, some volunteers stay in touch with their Pals year-round, attending outings together or helping with projects beyond the snow shoveling season. These connections between neighbors fuel the smalltown sense of community Broomfield is known for fostering. In short, the Snow Pals program has the benefit of continually building community.

During the winter of 2024-2025, nearly 50 volunteers, including families with kids, assisted 75 Broomfield residents with snow removal. This coming year, the program anticipates a 35% increase in requests as the program continues to grow and anticipates more than 100 residents will need a snow pal, so additional volunteers will be needed to meet this goal.

Volunteers will be matched with one or more residents for the entire snow season and when two or more inches of accumulation occurs, are asked to remove the snow within 24 hours. It’s a great way to make a difference for a neighbor. If you would like to lend a helping hand as a Snow Pal volunteer, visit Broomfield.org/BroomfieldPals to learn more and sign up.

Peace of Mind for Pet Parents:

HNCU Launches Pet Insurance with Spot

For many of us, pets are more than animals—they’re family. And just like any family member, they deserve great care when they’re under the weather. But veterinary bills can add up fast. That’s where pet insurance comes in.

Horizons North Credit Union recently added pet insurance to its lineup of offerings for members in coordination with Spot Pet Insurance.

“Horizons North Credit Union has joined forces with Spot to offer discounted pet insurance because we know pets are family too,” said LaTrice Brewster, AVP of marketing and business development at HNCU. “This new benefit is part of our ‘people helping people’ philosophy, giving members peace of mind and financial support to make the best decisions if your pet gets sick or injured.”

HNCU considered several options when looking for a pet insurance provider. After narrowing its list to three top options, HNCU chose Spot because of its simple-to-use services, flexible plans, and discounts for members. In fact, HNCU members receive up to 20% off pet insurance plans through its strategic partnership with Spot.

Demand for pet insurance is not only increasing every year, but it has reached an all-time high. According to the 2025 North American Pet Health Insurance Association report, there was a 20.8% increase in gross written premium from 2023 to 2024. The total number of insured pets also increased 12.7% from 2023 to 2024.

The popularity of pet insurance is growing as pet parents realize how costly unexpected vet visits can be. From tummy troubles to ear infections, the bills can stack up quickly. According to Spot, the top reasons people file pet insurance claims are related to wellness and preventative services, including

routine care, check-ups, and vaccinations. Acute conditions frequently submitted for claims include vomiting and diarrhea, ear infections, allergies, stomach upset, behavioral issues, growths and lumps, skin irritations, and urinary tract infections.

Not all policies are priced the same. Premiums are based on the pet’s age, breed, and gender, as well as the zip code where the owner resides. This means your monthly cost might look very different from someone else’s, even if your pets are similar. That’s why it’s worth getting a personalized quote.

While the goal — helping with medical costs — is the same, pet insurance is much simpler than human health coverage. There are no networks, and visits to any licensed vet in the United States and Canada can be covered, said Zach Greenfield, partner marketing manager at Spot Pet Insurance.

After seeking care, pet owners pay the vet out of pocket, submit a claim and receive reimbursement within a few days. As more pet owners sign up for insurance, providers are stepping up their game. Spot, for example, offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if no claims are filed, 24/7 telehealth access to a vet at no extra cost, and a rewards program with over $2,500 in discounts on pet products and services.

For more information, HNCU members can log in to their account, or anyone can find more information at https://www. hncu.org/services/insurance/spot-pet-insurance.html

The Next Chapter Begins: FlatIron Crossing’s Bold Evolution

25 Years of Community Connection. A Future Full of Possibilities.

FlatIron Crossing has been at the heart of Broomfield for 25 years — it’s the place where families celebrate milestones, friends gather for memorable experiences and people come to enjoy the region’s best shopping.

Now, as FlatIron Crossing marks its 25th anniversary, Broomfield’s premier retail property is writing an exciting new chapter. This one-of-a-kind shopping destination is evolving — both inside and outside — to bring Broomfield even more of the top stores, entertainment experiences and restaurants this dynamic community wants now and well into the future.

Bringing the Excitement Throughout 2025

The transformation is underway, adding fresh new retail names inside the property this fall and setting the stage for major retail announcements to come.

One recent example: At the LEGO Store opening in September, hundreds of “brick-builders” of all ages lined up for the fun — just one of the distinctive experiences you won’t find elsewhere in the area.

Where Innovation Meets Opportunity

High-profile, innovative brands are choosing Broomfield as their new home north of Denver. New and expanded stores just opened inside FlatIron Crossing this August and September include: Bath & Body Works — now a refreshed location for this favorite store for personal care and home fragrances, including top-selling collections for fine fragrance mist, body lotion and body cream, 3-wick candles, home fragrance diffusers and liquid hand soap lululemon — now an expanded prototype store offering even more of this top brand’s innovative athletic apparel and accessories SweetPlay — a new north metro location coming soon for Colorado’s best indoor playground for kids of all ages

Victoria’s Secret — now an expanded flagship location for this popular brand offering modern, fashion-inspired collections including signature bras, panties, lingerie, apparel, casual sleepwear, swim, lounge and sport, as well as award-winning prestige fragrances and body care

Opening in October:

Anthropologie — a brand-new location bringing this top brand’s distinctive finds for your closet and home to Broomfield

OFFLINE by Aerie — a new store offering this popular brand’s activewear for real life, including shirts, shorts, sweats and much more

Coming in 2026: Abercrombie & Fitch — opens in 2026, bringing its signature brand of quality apparel, accessories and fragrance crafted for every occasion

A VISION COMING TO LIFE

The evolution extends to HiFi at FlatIron Crossing — a 25-acre mixed-use community now under construction next to the enclosed mall. Picture 65,000 square feet of new retail and dining, anchored by the 34,000-squarefoot “eatertainment” concept Pindustry, offering fantastic food and fun, great cocktails, live music and a rooftop deck, complemented by NOVEL HiFi’s 345 luxury residential units. Lush green spaces will host concerts, fitness classes, farmers markets and festivals, creating a year-round hub where community connections flourish.

The Region’s Best Shopping

Today, 175 retailers and restaurants already call this outstanding property home, from DICK’S Sporting Goods, Apple, Gap, Hollister, Crate&Barrel, Pottery Barn and Macy ’s to P.F. Chang’s, Red Robin and AMC Theatres. And all the new stores, restaurants and entertainment concepts are set to bring Broomfield’s favorite retail destination to the next level.

Celebrating the Holidays

Year after year, Broomfield loves to gather at FlatIron Crossing. Up next is the Bridal Bash event on October 18 — and then it’s all about the holidays!

• November8 — Santa’s Arrival and Breakfast, where shoppers will enjoy a delicious, complimentary breakfast plus live entertainment by professional musicians and local school bands, plus cookies, hot cocoa, face painting, giveaways and more!

Local Pet Shop Doubles Down on Care, Community, and Squeaky-clean Pups

At Wag N’ Wash Natural Pet Food & Grooming, pets aren’t just customers—they're family. And after seven years in business, owner Mike Schreiber says it’s been everything he dreamed of and more.

“Serving Broomfield’s pets and pet parents has been everything I hoped it would be when we chose to open our store here,” Schreiber said. “The community is beyond loyal to their animals. I'm extremely grateful that they chose me as their pet store.”

Tucked into the Broomfield shopping plaza off U.S. Highway 287, Wag N’ Wash has become a onestop shop for local pet lovers. Whether you’re stocking up on natural food and treats, looking for a new leash or toy, or getting your pup squeaky clean, the store has just about everything—plus a few surprises.

There’s a groom room. There’s a treat bar. And you can wash your own pet in one of their industrial-grade tubs — cats, pigs, and even a goat have taken the plunge over the years.

“The wash stations were really the heart of our original concept,” Schreiber said. “This isn’t just for dogs — this is for pets of all stripes.”

The self-wash area, complete with drying stations and all the supplies pet parents need, has been a customer favorite. The shop is working on a new loyalty program – the Muddy Paws program, which gives visitors their 4th wash free.

For those who’d rather leave the scrubbing to the pros, Wag N’

Wag N’ Wash Celebrates Seven Years of Serving Broomfield’s Furry Friends

Wash also offers full-service grooming, with expert groomers who prioritize the health and wellness of every animal in their care.

If running errands isn’t on your schedule, Wag N’ Wash has you covered. Customers can now shop without leaving the comfort of home thanks to free 1-hour curbside pickup, same-day delivery, or the convenient Autoship Repeat Delivery Service. Create a user account online to manage your pet’s profile, receive personalized offers, and leave delivery instructions for added convenience every time you order.

“We want shopping here to be as easy and personal as it is in-store,” said Schreiber. “That means meeting people where they are — whether that’s at our tubs or at their doorstep.”

To keep up with demand, the store is expanding its inventory and grooming area.

Wag N’ Wash has also carved out a role as a community hub for pet health and fun. The shop hosts regular photo events with Santa, the Easter Bunny, and a Valentine’s Day kissing booth. On the more practical side, it provides stress-free, non-anesthesia dental cleanings with K-9 Smiles, and monthly veterinary clinics through VIP Petcare.

Schreiber’s journey to pet shop ownership didn’t follow a typical path. After a long career in finance and telecommunications—and a life-changing ski trip to Steamboat Springs in 1988—he decided to make Colorado home. His first dog, adopted in 1993, sparked a passion for pet nutrition and ultimately laid the foundation for Wag N’ Wash.

Today, Schreiber runs the store with his wife, Lisa, and their rescued Saint Bernard/Boxer mix, Finnegan—who has a reputation as the store’s unofficial treat shoplifter.

For Schreiber, it’s all about community. “We just want to make life better for pets and their people,” he said.

A Pet’s Best FRIENDS

Aconditions. My favorite part about working with my fellow FRIENDS is their positive attitude.”

Amanda works in the outdoor small-dog yard, caring for puppies and little dogs who play together. Her favorite moments are when a dog jumps into her lap and falls asleep, or when the entire pack howls along to a passing firetruck. FRIENDS helped her find the job, practice applications, and provided a job coach. “Having this job helps me learn new skills and be a little more social with my coworkers, to me that really means a lot and I couldn’t have done it without FRIENDS of Broomfield,” she said. Kevin works as a Pet Pro, caring for dogs, cleaning yards, and keeping pets cool on hot days. “I enjoy working with the animals,” he said, recalling when one tiny pup named Beans fit in one arm—and now she requires two. FRIENDS supported him with interview prep and job skills training. He’s learned something surprising about himself, too: “I always thought I was a cat person. Now I am both a cat person and a dog person.”

t City Bark, wagging tails and sloppy kisses are all in a day’s work—but for four FRIENDS of Broomfield participants, it’s much more than that. Their jobs at City Bark are opportunities to shine, to learn, and to be part of a team. Thanks to the support of FRIENDS of Broomfield’s Supported Employment program, Audrey, Amanda, Kevin, and Morighann are thriving in roles where their love for animals meets meaningful employment.

FRIENDS of Broomfield helps adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities prepare for the workforce by offering job readiness training, interview support, on-thejob coaching, and continued guidance. For participants, that support not only opens the door to employment but also builds independence and self-confidence. City Bark has embraced the partnership, offering a welcoming workplace where FRIENDS employees are valued team members.

Audrey began her career at City Bark as a Pet Host, carefully checking vaccine records and reservations. Today, she’s a Pet Pro, playing with dogs in solo care. “My favorite part of the job is working with the animals and people,” she said. FRIENDS helped her get ready by providing job prep and on-the-job training. She’s learned that she can be flexible, and she appreciates how her coworkers support her. “The staff answer any questions I may have and let me know about the dogs’

Kevin works as a Pet Pro, caring for dogs, cleaning yards, and keeping pets cool on hot days.

Morighann has worked at City Bark for three years, focusing on solo dog care. She loves the work, and even boards her own dog, Jake, at the facility. “I’d get bored at home, but here I get to be with dogs and take my own,” she said. FRIENDS helped her with job searching and development, and she’s learned how to work with many types of dogs over time. “I love my FRIENDS and my co-workers,” she shared warmly.

For these four employees, City Bark is more than a workplace— it’s a community. With FRIENDS of Broomfield walking alongside them, they’ve built skills, confidence, and friendships that go far beyond the kennel doors. Together, FRIENDS and City Bark show the power of inclusive employment: creating spaces where everyone, no matter their ability, can contribute, grow, and thrive.

Summer’s Bounty Graces the Kitchen

Like many of you, we set a plan this past spring to shrink the size of our lawn in response to increased water rates here in Broomfield. What resulted was a nearly 2,000 square foot reduction in

Serrano Chili Hot Sauce

Ingredients

• 1/2 lb. Serrano peppers (approx. 18-20)

• 3-6 Jalapeño peppers

• 2 Tablespoons Avocado or Olive oil

• 1/2 yellow onion

• 1 garlic clove

• 1/2 cup white vinegar

• 1/4 cup water

• freshly cracked black pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano

Instructions

grass and the addition of four raised garden beds which enabled us to expand our vegetable gardening. My husband, Craig, and I have been enjoying growing some of our own produce and have been happy to share with family, friends, and neighbors.

Give the Serranos a good rinse and de-stem them. Be sure to wash your hands after handling them.

Sauté a roughly chopped 1/4 onion and 1 whole, peeled garlic clove in oil over medium heat.

Once the onion is soft you can add 1 teaspoon Mexican oregano, some freshly cracked black pepper, oregano and briefly cook until fragrant and then add the de-stemmed Serranos, jalapeños, 1/2 cup white vinegar, 1/4 cup water, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Bring to a simmer and cook for up to 4 hours. Once the peppers are soft, purée in a blender or use an immersion blender.

Add mixture to bottles or a small or in small jars. Store in the fridge where it will keep for months at a time. This recipe should yield 2-3 of the pictured bottles.

In addition to numerous zucchini, cucumbers, and a few cabbages, our garden has produced a variety of herbs, and Big Boy as well as San Marzano tomatoes. A decently hot summer helped to produce some spicy peppers including Serranos, jalapeños, and garden salsa (a hybrid) peppers. With each small harvest joining the previous, we found ourselves with overflowing colanders and bowls throughout the kitchen. This led to a plan to do some canning and preserving on a larger scale than we have done in the past. The tomatoes seemed to take longer than usual to begin ripening and now that they have, we have been busy making and canning tomato sauce with the San Marzanos. I’ve hoped for several summers to harvest enough of these naturally sweet and perfectly balanced tomatoes to preserve an abundance of sauce for wintertime. Last summer we used the sauce as quickly as it was made. With seven plants this year, I’m hoping that we will have plenty. The sauce is a base for our family’s traditional Sunday pasta sauce as well as football chili. We have grown Serrano chilis for a number of years. They tend to be incredibly spicy! We love spicy

food as much as many others do, but the addition of these chilis can spoil a dish. Our solution is to make hot sauce. So far we have bottled 36 bottles! The bottles we use are purchased from Amazon and the recipe is below.

Although we have shared quite a few, neither my husband nor I tire of zucchini. I add it diced to a lot of our skillet meals. A spiralizer to make “zoodles” is a terrific lower carb pasta replacement. Shredded zucchini is a wonderful addition to any meatball recipe and is a great way to add fiber and maintain moisture during cooking. And who doesn’t have zucchini bread from neighbors as significant childhood memory? I also love to bake it into breads and cookies. Chocolate chocolate chip is a favorite in my family!

If you enjoy cooking with fresh herbs as much as I do, being able to grab handfuls from the garden as I’m preparing a meal is on another level. Last Christmas I was gifted an Italian herb blend from my lifelong friend, Laura. The herbs were grown, dried, and blended by her. We savored that jar through the winter months. Each and every time the bouquet of basil, oregano, rosemary, and thyme began to warm, my kitchen smelled like an Italian restaurant. Eager to replicate and share, I made a plan the grow those specific herbs. I’ve been using them fresh and will soon harvest, dry, and blend them.

Craig and I are already discussing what we plan to repeat and what we will do differently next summer. I know there are a lot of great gardeners and cooks out there so I count myself in good company and appreciate the opportunity to share the joy that summer 2025 brought my family and me! Perhaps a few more will be inspired too!

Community Investment in Public Works Pays Off, from the Tap to the Street

The recent “best-tasting water” award won by the City and County of Broomfield’s Water Utilities staff is more than just a trophy; it reflects the incredible work being done to deliver reliable, high-quality water to the community. This regional recognition demonstrates that utility fees and tax dollars are effectively being used to maintain and improve essential services. The hard work of Broomfield’s Public Works and Water Utilities departments extends beyond the water you drink, touching everything from the streets you drive on to the pipes under your home.

Your Water Utility bill payments cover the day-to-day operations and ensure the ongoing maintenance needed to provide reliable service. For instance, the Water Treatment Facility significantly improved operations, enhancing pH adjustment for better disinfection, reducing lead/copper corrosion, and improving water taste. This, combined with new automation, has streamlined processes; water quality tests that once took four hours are now completed in just 50 minutes, and water clarity has noticeably improved. Less chlorine is also required for disinfection. Furthermore, three algae control buoys in local reservoirs actively prevent algae growth, which can cause unpleasant tastes and odors.

Broomfield has also upgraded its water quality labs with advanced instruments that allow faster and more precise testing of water samples. These improvements enable staff to quickly test a wider range of substances, ensuring

that water is continuously monitored for safety and quality.

Beyond the treatment facility, increased staffing since 2023 has enabled significant improvements in the water distribution system. The waterline replacement program is now conducted annually, a major upgrade from its previous two-year schedule. This ensures more frequent maintenance to prevent costly repair issues. Broomfield is now fully maintaining and flushing all fire hydrants, a huge leap from just a few years ago. Similarly, valve maintenance is expected to be completed on all valves by late 2025, representing a significant improvement from the program’s status just two years ago.

Utility fees also provide funding for vital sewer and stormwater maintenance programs. The city is on track to meet its yearly sewer line inspection and cleaning targets, utilizing camera inspections to ensure pipes are clear and in good repair. The Stormwater Maintenance Program, which did not exist before 2021, has now reached a point where 100% of the system is being inspected and cleaned annually.

You can be confident that your utility fees and tax dollars are being wisely invested in a comprehensive strategy that guarantees the highquality services you expect and deserve. The City and County of Broomfield appreciates your ongoing support for our community and is dedicated to using those funds to deliver exceptional service for years to come.

Leading Humility Vision:

Fire Chief Mark Daugherty Steps into His New Role

ship,” Daugherty shared. “He always put the organization and the people first. His steadiness, even in the toughest moments, taught me that real strength is about listening, building trust, and making decisions that last.”

Q: What are your top priorities for your first year as chief?

was sworn in as North Metro Fire Rescue District’s seventh fire chief, he knew he was stepping into both a tremendous honor and a great responsibility. In a recent conversation with Our Broomfield Magazine, he shared his reflections on his journey, the lessons learned along the way, and his vision for the department’s future.

Q: What does it mean to you personally to now lead this department as its seventh fire chief?

A: “It’s an incredible honor and a humbling responsibility,” Daugherty said. “North Metro Fire has a proud history, and being entrusted as the seventh fire chief means carrying that tradition forward while preparing the organization for the future.”

Q: “You’ve been with North Metro Fire since 2011. How did your earlier experiences shape your path, and what brought you here?”

A: Daugherty began his career as a volunteer firefighter before serving as a firefighter/paramedic with the City of Escondido Fire Department in San Diego County. “It was an area constantly dealing with wildfires and extreme call volume, and those experiences pushed me to grow quickly,” he recalled. Later, at Denver Health, he developed a passion for prehospital medicine. “I saw firsthand how evidence-based research improves patient care. That balance of operational strength and medical depth has shaped me as a leader.”

Returning to Colorado also meant returning to his roots. “What’s kept me here is the culture and the people — this department truly feels like family, and that’s something you don’t walk away from.”

Q: You’ve worked closely with Chief Ramos—what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from him?

A: “Chief Ramos showed me the power of humility in leader-

A: “My top priority will always be ensuring we deliver the highest level of service to our community,” Daugherty said. To achieve that, he outlined four main focus areas: proactively addressing revenue challenges, investing in the well-being and professional development of personnel, ensuring operational readiness through facilities and staffing, and continuing North Metro’s tradition of excellence in EMS. “Our cardiac arrest outcomes are among the best in the nation,” he noted. “We will continue setting the standard in clinical performance, innovation, and compassionate care.”

Q: What role do you see partnerships with other agencies and the community playing in the department’s future?

A: “They’re essential,” he said. Daugherty points to North Metro’s integrated 911 system, where the closest unit responds regardless of agency. “That seamless approach saves lives and reflects the future of emergency response.” He also highlighted strong ties with local law enforcement and governments. “It takes everyone working together to build a safer, more resilient community.”

Q: Can you share a meaningful or inspiring moment from your time in the department that reminds you why you do this work?

A: “The Marshall Fire stands out,” he recalled. “Seeing agencies from across the state come together was powerful. Everyone showed up. Everyone took action. It was a reminder that in emergency services, no one stands alone.”

Q: What’s one thing about you that your colleagues or the community might be surprised to learn?

A: “Even with the demands of this career, my family has always been at the center of who I am,” he said. “My wife and our twin daughters are my foundation. Watching them grow up, and now begin kindergarten, has been one of the most exciting experiences of my life. They shape the perspective I bring to this role and remind me daily of what matters most. People might also be surprised to know how much I love hockey — I grew up an Avs fan and still follow the game closely.”

Q: Outside of the uniform, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A: “Anything that gets me outdoors and pushes me,” Daugherty says. “Hunting, rafting, hiking, and traveling with my family all recharge me. Time in Colorado’s mountains gives me balance and perspective.”

Hello Pumpkin Everything!

It’s pumpkin season! And if you know me, you know that this month I am going to give you pumpkin recipes that I hope become among your favorites. (Bonus fact for the Pet issue: if your pet has intestinal issues, add canned or fresh cooked pumpkin to their food and things harden right up.)

Pumpkin Hummus

Ingredients

• 1 14-ounce can (400 g) chickpeas drained

• 1 cup (200 g) pumpkin puree or roasted pumpkin

• 1 teaspoon salt

• ½ teaspoon chili powder

• ½ teaspoon ground cumin

• 1 tablespoon (15 ml) extra virgin olive oil

• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) tahini

• 2 tablespoons (30 ml) lemon juice

• 3 cloves garlic

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a food processor and process until smooth and creamy.

Notes

Aunt Jackie’s

Healthy Peanut Butter Cups

When I was visiting my Uncle David and Aunt Jackie a few years back we had a good laugh over all the “recovery snacks” they had in their own special drawer in the fridge for their grandkids. Since then I have kept recovery snacks on hand (in their own special location) for when the hangry is real. She also gave me this recipe that I don’t feel guilty eating. Enjoy!

Ingredients

• 12 muffin cupcake liners

• ⅔ cup semi sweet chocolate chips

• 1 tablespoon coconut oil

• 1 scoop vanilla protein powder

• ⅓ cup peanut butter powder

• ⅓ cup pumpkin puree

Instructions

Line muffin pan with liners

Add a splash of water if the hummus is too thick, and adjust seasonings to your preference.

Once it’s ready, spread in a bowl and garnish with olive oil, pumpkin seeds, watercress, smoked paprika, and even chili crunch. Delish!

Feel free to use roasted pumpkin or butternut squash, and add it to the mixture instead of the pumpkin puree.

Serve pumpkin hummus spread on toast, with pita or naan bread, celery sticks, carrot sticks, or cucumber slices. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Microwave chocolate chips and coconut oil until melted

Spoon a teaspoon of the melted chocolate into each muffin liner and tip to coat the bottom, and place in the freezer for five minutes until chocolate hardens

Mix protein powder, peanut butter powder, and pumpkin in a bowl and mix with your hands

Divide the mixture into 12 pieces

Remove hardened chocolate cups from freezer

Flatten the 12 pieces of dough and place in each muffin cup

Drizzle 1 teaspoon of the melted chocolate over each disc and tip until coated

Freeze for 30 more minutes

Keep frozen until serving/eating

Pumpkin Dog Treats

Ingredients

• 1 cup pumpkin canned or homemade puree

• 2 eggs

• ¼ cup creamy peanut butter

• 2 ½ to 3 cups whole wheat flour

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the pumpkin, eggs, and

peanut butter, and stir well

Add 2 ½ cups of flour and stir to combine. The dough should be about the consistency of play-dough — soft and easy to roll out, but not wet and sticky Add more flour as needed to reach this consistency

Divide the dough in half. Working with one piece at a time, roll it out on a well-floured surface until it is ½-inch thick

Cut out the dog treats using a cookie cutter, or you can simply cut them into squares using a knife or pizza cutter

Place the cut-out cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet

Repeat with remaining dough, gathering and re-rolling the scrap dough until all the dough is used

Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through. (The treats will still be a little soft at the 20-minute mark. Bake for an additional 10 minutes if you’d like a crisp dog treat.)

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week or in the freezer for 3 months

Q: What did you enjoy most about your job?

A: I was never bored; I worked for companies run by entrepreneurs who pursued exciting prospects which meant I traveled the world. It was intense but rewarding.

Meet Patrick Quinn

Q: Tell us a little about your career path.

A: I was lured into the oil industry when it was booming in Denver and became controller of HOC at the age of 27 where I had 100 people working for me in three different countries. When the oil industry busted in 1986, I started a CPA firm that specialized in accounting and tax services to the oil and gas, mining and real estate industries. I sold it in 2010 and it still is going strong.

Q: What do you and your family enjoy during your free time?

A: We love to hike, play golf, and travel.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?

A: North Side Tavern and the Broomfield County Commons which was created as a result of a battle between the parks and open space groups in 1999. Both sides won.

Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?

A: George DiCiero, our city manager for 35 years. We were somewhat adversarial when I became mayor in 2007 but I learned to respect his leadership style and all he did for Broomfield. We became close friends.

Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet “insert name,” our goal is to introduce Broomfield area change-makers and highlight their contributions.

About Patrick Quinn

Our Broomfield caught up with former Broomfield Mayor Pat Quinn who served from 2007 to 2013 and 2019 to 2021, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: How did you end up in Broomfield?

A: I was born in the panhandle of Nebraska, and graduated from Westminster High School in 1971 and CSU, in accounting, in 1975. My first wife Penny and I moved to Broomfield in 1981 because we wanted our three daughters to attend the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and so I could commute by bus to downtown where I was controller for a public, international company, Hamilton Oil Corporation, headquartered in Denver. Carleen and I were married in 1993 and adopted two daughters from China who also attended school in BVSD. All five daughters graduated from Broomfield High School.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being retired?

A: The luxury of time to relax, golf, read, write whenever you want, and take naps.

Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?

A: At nearly 80,000 residents, we still strive to have that “hometown” feeling at the same time we welcome new residents to experience it with us.

Q: Who or what inspires you to be a better person?

A: My wife, Carleen. She has been a partner, a sounding board, and my moral compass since the day we met.
