If you have heard this one before, stop me. Actually, don’t. I’m going to tell it again - with a different part. Five years ago, at the onset of the pandemic, I sat in the living room with my family and we decided to start this magazine. It was a risk. A big one. Back in April of 2020 none of us knew what the business impacts of Covid would actually be.
But for businesses needing a way to stay in touch with their customers in “unprecedented” times, print advertising mailed to every home in Broomfield at a highly affordable price was çextremely desirable. The precursor to this magazine had just gone out of business due to mismanagement by the then owner, and clients were beginning to call me looking for solutions. And so (forgive the drama please), like a Phoenix from the ashes, Our Broomfield was born.
Home renovation and maintenance, restaurants, specialty medical, pet services … there were numerous business categories still operating during the pandemic that had products and services to sell and needing an avenue to reach customers with their offers. Many of them were quickly on board.
Over the past few months, my Sales Manager Tammy and I have been visiting several of these five-year clients. Just to say hello, check in and see how things are going, and thank them. These “calls” have been wonderful. Our Broomfield advertising continues to work for them because their message gets directly into customers hands and our readers (you) appreciate the importance of supporting local business. We would not be here today, delivering the great community content that we do month in and month out, without their partnership.
And so, each month, each issue, each day, I am thankful for everyone who makes this magazine happen – family, staff, Broomfield partners, and readers. But on the occasion of our five-year anniversary, I am acutely appreciative of our clients. Because of them, we are able to bring you and the entire Broomfield community Our Broomfield magazine each month.
Summertime in Broomfield is a beautiful thing. I hope you are enjoying it! Check out the many fun events and activities still ahead in this issue, and read about some of the people who make Broomfield amazing, like retiring North Metro fire chief, Chief David Ramos (page 34), “the flower lady of Broomfield” Brittany Jensen (page 20), and Pat Monacelli of the Broomfield Chamber (page 46).
Thank you for reading and thank you for five years of support.
We are proud to be your source for local community connections.

here’s something uniquely conflicting about planning a group vacation as couples. On one hand, the prospect of exploring new places with close friends fills you with excitement—shared adventures, inside jokes, and the comfort of familiar faces in unfamiliar settings. On the other hand, there’s that quiet voice whispering about stolen moments with your partner, intimate conversations over morning coffee, and the freedom to wander without coordinating with other people’s schedules.
This internal tug-of-war isn’t selfish; it’s human. We crave connection in multiple forms, and sometimes those desires seem to compete with each other rather than complement.
Early in June, my husband and I joined our oldest son, his friends, and their parents on the kids’ senior trip (we are talking 60 people). I looked forward to it for months— beach volleyball, pool bar, group dinners with the kind of laughter that echoes through walls. And as our departure date approached, I found myself giddy with excitement and also wondering how this big of a group would do on vacation together and would I get alone time with my husband?
I have to say, traveling with this group was nothing short of incredible. We met up each day, laughed at the pool bar, and stayed up late being silly with the kids. What an easy group we had and I felt grateful on many occasions that we have these friendships in our life.
Was there internal struggle with the duality of alone time and being present? I definitely found myself needing downtime and lots and lots of shade. But I also didn’t feel alone in that. Couples would come and go and there was no pressure to do anything other than what we wanted.
On day two when my husband and I decided to find a quiet corner by the pool and read, I felt both relief and guilt—relief at the prospect of time with my husband and guilt for separating from friends and kids we also
really wanted to spend our time with. This is where the internal conflict arises.
That lazy day became the key to unlocking the rest of our trip. Away from the group dynamic it’s fun to recap the shared experiences, reconnected as a couple, and return to the afternoon pool bar feeling refreshed and more present with our friends. We felt more engaged, lighter, more ourselves.
The revelation was simple: alone time wasn’t selfish; it was essential fuel for better group time. These moments didn’t detract from our friendships; they enhanced them by ensuring we brought our best selves to the group.
This vacation lesson extends far beyond travel. In daily life, we often feel guilty for needing space from people we love— declining a social invitation, choosing a quiet evening with our partner over group plans, or simply wanting to watch a movie and not talk. But these aren’t betrayals of friendship or partnership; they’re investments in our capacity to show up fully when we do choose to be together.
The healthiest relationships—whether friendships or marriages—breathe. They expand and contract, allowing for both intimate connection and individual space. Learning to honor both needs without guilt creates a foundation for deeper, more sustainable relationships all around. Happy travels!

Get ready, Broomfield! After months of anticipation and a major renovation, The Bay Aquatic Park is making a splashy return just in time for summer fun. Originally opened in 1991, this beloved community water park which has served generations of families with its exciting slides, refreshing pools, and sun-filled memories, has undergone a modern makeover that promises an even better experience for visitors of all ages.
The remodel to update water attractions and enhance accessibility and comfort began in August 2024. The revitalized park is better than ever and is ready to welcome the community back on Monday, July 7, with a host of new and improved features.
Visitors can expect all the classic fun they know and love — slides, splash zones, and family-friendly pools — now enhanced with improved access, new lighting, and additional shaded areas. These upgrades aim to not only boost safety and convenience, but also provide a more enjoyable experience for everyone, from toddlers to seniors.
To ensure a smooth and safe experience, advance reservations are required for entry. Starting June 30, guests can reserve their sessions online on a week-byweek basis. Be sure to create or log in to your account at B-REx.com to secure your spot. Since sessions may fill up quickly, it’s recommended to plan ahead.
For Broomfield residents, there’s an added bonus — a discounted resident rate. Residents must verify their Broomfield address in person at any Broomfield recreation facility to receive this special rate for The Bay reservations throughout the summer.
Whether you’re looking to beat the heat, plan a summer birthday party or simply unwind with the kids, The Bay Aquatic Park’s reopening comes at the perfect time!

Each summer, Broomfield comes alive with bursts of color—flower beds that pop, planters that spill over with blooms, and city spaces that feel vibrant and welcoming. Behind the beauty is a year-round effort led by Brittany Jensen, Park Operations Foreman and Horticulturist for the City and County of Broomfield.
Brittany’s journey into horticulture started nearly three decades ago when she took a seasonal job with Broomfield’s parks department during college. “I started the summer of ’95 while I was in college studying sociology,” she said. “I kept coming back every summer because I loved the work and the people.” After graduation, she transitioned into a permanent role and has since grown into a leadership position that combines creativity, science, and community service.
Today, she leads the team responsible for planting and maintaining Broomfield’s annual flower displays—from colorful beds around city buildings to the massive planters that brighten

downtown corners. While the displays are most visible in the summer months, the planning begins much earlier. Flowers are ordered as early as October, greenhouse growing starts in March, and city crews prepare beds in April for planting in May.
Brittany’s passion goes beyond just planting—she thrives on collaboration and creativity. While she loves getting her hands in the dirt, one of her favorite parts of the job is inspiring and guiding her team. “I love flower planting,” she said, “but I also really enjoy leading and adding fire to others’ passion.” Throughout the year, she collects ideas from her crew—flowers they’ve seen, colors they love, combinations they want to try. When it’s time to place the citywide flower order each fall, it all comes together. “It’s like giving them a big box of crayons and letting them play.”
This year’s displays include an exciting reintroduction of ornamental banana plants, which Brittany is especially excited about. She’s also looking forward to the beds at Broomfield
Commons, which she says are already “glowing” and will serve as a colorful backdrop to the City’s Fourth of July festivities.
Caring for the flowers is no small feat, especially in Colorado’s unpredictable climate. The team is constantly monitoring for moisture, adjusting watering schedules, and battling pests like the Japanese beetle—a persistent threat.
Despite the challenges, the work is clearly rewarding. Community members frequently stop to ask about specific blooms or to say thank you. While there’s no single fan-favorite location, the feedback is overwhelmingly positive. “People are just grateful,” Brittany said.
Brittany’s love for her work is clear in every flower bed and planter across the city. She speaks with deep pride about the creativity and dedication of her team, often crediting them for the beauty residents enjoy each day. Their passion and hard work shine through in every bloom, and Broomfield is lucky to have such a committed crew bringing color and joy to the community.
As summer unfolds and the city continues to bloom, it’s easy to admire the results. But thanks to Brittany Jensen and her devoted team, we’re reminded that behind every vibrant planter is not just a flower—but a purpose, a plan, and a whole lot of passion.

Join the movement to foster community through reading. One Book One Broomfield invites residents to read this year's selection, “Happiness Falls” by author Angie Kim and participate in book discussions and related events and hear from the author on Thursday, November 6 at the Broomfield Auditorium. Events are open to all, regardless of home library.
The goal of Broomfield’s One Book program, dating back to 2006, is to create a citywide reading and discussion program that encourages residents to read the same book at the same time, creating a shared sense of community through literature.
Kim’s novel, described as gripping and thought-provoking, is a thrilling mystery about a father gone missing, and deftly explores family relationships, communication, and the complexities of human connection.
The book also presents as a platform for the author to share deeply intellectual textbook concepts such as Noam Chomsky’s theory of psycholinguistic nativism and the rudiments of speech therapy, sometimes challenging the reader solely focused on solving the mystery of the missing father.
Join “Happiness Falls” author Angie Kim for the One Book One Broomfield talk 7:00 p.m. Thursday, November 6 at the Broomfield Auditorium, 3 Community Park Rd. The event is free and open to the public.
The book is a page turner, though, and appealing in its first-person narrative.

By Sandra Shih Parks, Executive and Artistic Director, Colorado Conservatory of Dance
Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD) has been in a difficult financial position for the past year. In response, we’ve launched an urgent $150,000 emergency campaign to keep our programs alive. Over the past two months, we’ve seen our community step up in powerful ways.
So far, we’ve raised $58,000. We now need just $22,000 more to unlock a $20,000 donation match and qualify for a $50,000 community loan. This final push is critical—and we are so deeply grateful to every individual, family, and partner who has given, shared, and stood with us.
Because if CCD closes its doors, we lose more than just a dance studio.
Gone will be the free after-school dance programs that serve hundreds of

students in Title I schools; programs that offer creative outlets, mentorship, and a safe place to grow.
Gone will be our Anti-Bullying Dance Presentations, which reach more than 3,000 elementary students annually with powerful messages of empathy, confidence, and inclusion through the arts.
Gone will be our sensory-friendly performances and fully inclusive classes that provide access and belonging for students of all abilities.
Gone will be our reimagined Nut-
cracker, rooted in culturally authentic choreography that serves more than 3,000 audience members, and programs like Día de los Muertos that reflect and celebrate the diversity of our region.
Gone will be the Tiny Tots series, CCD’s presence at community events like Broomfield Days, and the joy of seeing more than 100 students dance, dream, and thrive in a place they call home.
We know the power of dance. We’ve seen it transform lives. And with your help, we’ll continue to do just that.
Join us. Help us reach the finish line. Help us save CCD.
Thank you.

As he prepares for retirement, North Metro Fire Chief David Ramos shares the milestones, memories, and meaning behind his remarkable 40+ year career.
After more than four decades with North Metro Fire Rescue District—including the last 11 years as chief—David Ramos is preparing to hang up his helmet. But before stepping into retirement, he took time to reflect on a career shaped by service, teamwork, and a deep connection to the community he calls home.
Q: Looking back, what are you most proud of?
A: “I’m most proud of our organization’s ability to overcome challenges as a team,” Ramos reflected. “Whether it’s navigating financial constraints or responding to a global pandemic, our people rise to the occasion by coming together and focusing on our common mission. It’s not one big accomplishment for me; it’s all the little ways our people shine in caring for others and each other. I’m proud to lead and support such a great team.”
Q: What were some defining accomplishments during your time as chief?
A: Ramos pointed to several milestones achieved under his leadership: reducing response times, achieving accreditation, advancing firefighter safety, and enhancing public outreach. He also highlights major projects like the integrated 911 dispatching hub and a stronger strategic focus. “These took years of work and dedication from many people,” he said. “It was an honor to help support those efforts and improve service to our community.”
Q: How has the role of firefighter evolved during your career?
A: “The number of skills and knowledge required for this role has grown so rapidly,” said Chief Ramos. “Firefighters have always needed a broad set of skills—handling everything from technical rescues and wildland fires to aircraft incidents, hazardous materials, and medical calls—but that base level of knowledge has significantly increased over the years.”
He noted that the complexity of incidents has grown, and new technologies and equipment are being developed at a faster pace than ever before. “Our firefighters have to constantly adapt to ensure we’re providing the best care to the community,” he explained. “As fire chief, my role has been to support the leaders and experts within our organization, secure funding, and build strong relationships with our partners so that our team has everything they need to keep improving and serving effectively.”
Q: What has serving Broomfield meant to you personally?
A: Ramos’ roots run deep—he’s lived in Broomfield for more than 30 years. “To serve in the community you’ve grown up around is very special,” he said. “Working with law enforcement partners and our local governments to care for this community has been a privilege.”
Q: Any moments that really capture the spirit of your team?
A: “In the fire service, we’re a family—brothers and sisters who show up for each other in tough times. Just as we serve the community, we go above and beyond to care for one another. Seeing that compassion in action, whether for a teammate or a neighbor in need, is what makes me most proud.”
Q: What advice would you give incoming Chief Mark Daugherty?
A: “Continue to grow relationships, and lean on the strong team around you,” Ramos advised. “Stay focused on community service and continuous improvement—those are our cornerstones.”
Q: What will you miss most?
A: “The people,” he replied without hesitation. “The colleagues, partners, and community members I’ve worked with every day have inspired me. I’ll miss that daily connection, but I’ll remain their biggest fan in retirement.”
Q: And what’s next?
A: More time with family—including his wife, four children, and eight grandchildren—is at the top of the list. “We’re looking forward to traveling, hiking, and maybe a little golf,” Ramos added with a smile.
Q: How would you sum up your career in just a few words?
A: “This career has provided me with so many opportunities to help others in need, and I have been blessed by the opportunity to serve my community and the men and women of North Metro Fire Rescue District.”
Chief Ramos’ legacy is one of steadfast leadership, community devotion, and a culture that values teamwork above all. As he prepares to pass the torch, the North Metro Fire Rescue District stands well positioned to continue its mission under new leadership.

Summer is the loveliest time in Colorado! The weather is warm, the sky is sunny and the trails are open to visitors. Enjoy the great outdoors and learn about the City and County of Broomfield's beautiful trail system while being entered to win prizes by participating in the Broomfield 100!
The Broomfield 100 is an annual challenge to walk, hike or bike 15 Broomfield trails between June and September, with the challenge wrapping up at Broomfield Days on September 20. Discover included trails by viewing the interactive map at Broomfield.org/Broomfield100 or picking up a physical passport at Broomfield’s recreation centers, the Library or the George DiCiero City and County Building.
In addition to enjoying the outdoors and learning about the trail system, Broomfield 100 participants can also earn prizes! Completed passports can be turned in at Broomfield Days in exchange for a custom pair of Broomfield 100 socks. Checking in at trailhead check-in stations also earns participants a chance to win a monthly random drawing of the socks from June through September. The more check-ins you complete, the more chances you have to win a pair of socks! To complete a loop or trail for the challenge, it is not necessary to cover the entire mileage of a trail, but rather to visit the site, learn the trail connections, and enjoy the area.
While hiking these trails, please respect trail guidelines to make your experience as enjoyable as possible! For your safety, observe all posted signage/regulations and prepare yourself to be on trail by wearing sturdy, comfortable shoes and dressing for the weather. Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, first aid equipment, and insect repellent. All Broomfield trails allow dogs (on-leash) and are open to bikes, walkers, etc. Many trails are ADA accessible, although some segments fall outside of ADA guidelines for slope and trail width. Before using any mobility devices on the trails, trail users should refer to the ADA Trail information at Broomfield.org/Broomfield100. Be kind to other trail users by practicing trail etiquette.
Stay on the right side of the trail, moving with the flow of traffic, except to pass on the left. Do not block the path by standing in the middle; leave at least half of the trail open for passing. When bicycling, slow down and notify other trail users before passing. Bicyclists must yield to hikers. Stay on existing trails to avoid creating new trails and causing damage to the landscape. A full trail etiquette guide can be found on the Broomfield Trail Map at Broomfield.org/TrailMap.
Each week, a different trail will be celebrated. Look for guidance about what you will find along the trail, details about the trail’s history and when you might find free cold treats along the trail! For information on the designated trail of the week, follow CCOB’s social media channels or subscribe to the Broomfield Community Update Weekly Newsletter at Broomfield.org/BinTheLoop.
For more information about the Broomfield 100, including video tours of all 15 trail loops, an interactive digital map (with points of interest including public art or where to park), where you can pick up a physical passport, ADA trail accessibility information and accessible trail maps, visit Broomfield.org/Broomfield100.

minutes. Drain and soak in cold water.
While the lentils are cooking, prep the cucumbers, tomatoes, bell pepper, onion, mint and parsley and place in a large bowl.
Add the drained, cooled lentils to the bowl.
Grate the garlic over the bowl, add the lemon zest, olive oil, salt, pepper, cumin, and fresh lemon juice. Give a good stir to combine well. Adjust salt and lemon to taste. As the salad sits, the lentils may soak up the salt and lemon, so add more as necessary, especially if making this ahead and always taste before serving.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Serve as is or over a bed of dressed baby arugula; add feta cheese if you like. Enjoy!
Optional additions: ½ teaspoon sumac, feta cheese, kalamata olives, arugula or baby spinach, or a splash of red wine vinegar.
On metal or soaked wooden skewers, thread vegetables and, on separate skewers, thread beef with pineapple. Discard remaining marinade from beef bowl. Grill kabobs, covered, over medium heat until vegetables are tender and beef reaches desired doneness, 12-15 minutes, turning occasionally.
In a small saucepan, bring reserved marinade to a boil, stirring occasionally; cook 1 minute. Remove vegetables, pineapple, and beef from skewers before serving. Serve with sauce.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being the Broomfield Area Chamber's President and CEO?
By Bette Erickson
Pat has served as the Broomfield Area Chamber's President & CEO for three years, and has worked at the Chamber for six years. He and his wife, Laneigh, have been married nearly a decade and between them have four children and four grandchildren (with a 5th on the way).
Pat’s hobbies include singing in a band called The Lap Dawgs, writing music, and exploring new beers.
Pat and his wife Laneigh (Walters) Monacelli.
Editor’s Note: Each month Our Broomfield Magazine profiles different members of the community. Through Our People: Meet “insert name,” our goal is to introduce Broomfield area change-makers and highlight their contributions.
A: The opportunities to meet people and learn about their businesses, and to actively support local businesses through networking, marketing, and advocacy work.
Q: Tell us a little about your career path.
A: I have a degree in journalism, and spent the early part of my career in TV and radio news. Then I spent nearly 20 years in the 501(c)(3) nonprofit world as a fundraiser and communications manager before coming to the Chamber in 2019. I’ve also enjoyed 25 years coaching soccer, including six as a high-school varsity coach.
Q: What do you and your family do during your free time?
A: Spending time in the mountains, spending time with family, and going to sporting events that the grandkids and grand-nieces/nephews are involved in.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant and park in Broomfield?
A: So many to choose from, but I’d have to go with EAT! Food & Drink. For parks, Brandywine is close to my house and very laid back.
Q: Who is the most interesting person, past or present, you’ve met in our community?
A: I’d have to say my wife, Laneigh (Walters) Monacelli. She has lived in Broomfield most of her adult life and, through her time as a softball coach and volunteer in local schools, she seems to know someone nearly everywhere we go!
Q: What is something you find unique about Broomfield?
A: I often call Broomfield a big-small town. Our positioning in northern Colorado has led us to attract some notable international companies and big business, but there is still a tight-knit sense of community and an affinity for small business. It’s the best of both worlds.
Q: What advice would you give to people living in or relocating to Broomfield?
A: Find ways to network – personally and professionally. Broomfielders look out for each other, recommend each other and, again, have a real sense of community. Take advantage of it!
Q: Who or what inspires you to be a better person?
A: My family, friends, and co-workers. Every day.
