OCTOBER 2025

McGIVNEY INSTITUTIONS & MEMORIALS

Devotion to Father McGivney spans the globe, wherever Knights of Columbus are active. From a school in the U.S. capital to a cupola in the capital of the Philippines, the life and legacy of the Order’s founder serve as a model for Catholics today. Here are some of the more notable sites.

Patrick Kelly admire the new statue in St. Patrick’s Cathedral unveiled by McGivney family members John Walshe and Margaret Ransom. Also shown are Walshe’s sons, John and Hugh (partially obscured). The statue, which was later moved to a side altar, was unveiled on Feb. 22, 2025, before a public display of the new Fourth Degree exemplification that marked the 125th anniversary of the Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus. McGivney House in Radom, Poland

The Blessed Michael McGivney House was opened on Dec. 3, 2022, at Our

Lady of Częstochowa Parish in Radom, Poland. With the help of around 40 brother Knights, the house

was refurbished and now fully operational, providing support for displaced Ukrainians from the war. A various selection of activities and programs are conducted with the goal of creating an atmosphere where refugees can get psychological assistance, build community and experience a sense of support. Along with activities such as art therapy, theater groups, and catechism classes, this resource center provides food, clothing, and other necessary items for those in need. Additionally, in cooperation with the diocesan Caritas, the House assists refugees with every taste such as getting to the doctor, applying for jobs, submitting official documents to the local government offices, and much more.

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED MICHAEL MCGIVNEY

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Bishop Thomas V. Daily of Brooklyn, Supreme Chaplain at the time, blessed the image which priests may pray before as they vest. The Knights have made a number of other gifts to the National Shrine, including the Knights’ Tower, which can be seen from all points of the nation’s capital, and the Incarnation Dome, a mosaic adorning the interior of one of the shrine’s five domes.

National Shrine of Cross in the Woods

The centerpiece of the National Shrine of Cross in the Woods is a seventon crucifix the focal point of the beautiful outdoor sanctuary in the Diocese of Gaylord, Mich. The grounds are also home to shrines to the Holy Family, St. Francis, Our Lady of the Highway, St. Peregrine, St. Kateri Tekakwitha and the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Father Michael McGivney.

You can play a key role in advancing

Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!

EVANGLEIZATION & FAITH FORMATION

October falls during the liturgical season known as Tempus per Annum or Ordinary Time (formerly Time After Pentecost), which is represented by the liturgical color green. Green is a symbol of hope, as it is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The liturgical color green is worn during the praying of Offices and celebration of Masses of Ordinary Time.

I hope this finds all of you well! here are a few things i wanted to update all of you on.

Last month, I had the distinct honor of attending COR training at supreme in New Haven Connecticut. Attending mass at Saint Mary church , the birthplace of our order, and praying over the sarcophagus of our blessed founder Fr Michael J McGivney, was an experience I will never forget!

Next, the following are the Councils currently having COR meetings:

• Council# 2362Cuyahoga Falls

• Council# 3213 - Fr. Carl Anthony

• Council# 4847Brunswick

• Council# 4891 - Holy Family Amherst

• Council# 11464Columbia Station

• Council# 16137 - St. Charles Borromeo

• Council# 16373 - St Ladislas Westlake

• Council# 14111Prince of Peace

Our Brothers at St Mary In Chardon , Fr Maruskin Council in Stow, and St Mary Magdelene in Willowick, will be starting

their COR meetings in the near future!

Our Goal for the Cleveland Diocese for 2025 - 2026 Fraternal Year is 13 Councils actively participating in COR. If you could please send a reminder to the Grand Knights of your Councils reminding them how important it is to have them register their Council E.F.F. directors. Visit the FORMS&EMAILS on the state website for the link.

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.

The Holy Father's Intentions for the Month of October 2025

Lastly, there is something I need to request your help with ...to this point, I've visited many councils all across our Diocese, assisting with everything from an open Q &A about COR, to getting to the "brass tacks" of how to structure and facilitate a meeting, to talking with steering committees and Clergy on the benefits that COR could bring to a Parish... but there are approximately 65 to 68 active Councils in our Diocese. I would like to request if you would name at

least 1 Council in your District that currently is not running COR, and if you attend that Councils business meeting, please let me know; as i would be grateful if i may attend with you. There is still so much work to be accomplished, and quite a few Councils and parishes that could benefit from COR.

Thank you very much and as always, my phone is always on, so if i may be of any assistance to you in any way, please contact me at any time. Vivat Jesus!

STATE OFFICER REPORT

Feel that … I know you do. The crisp cool autumn air. The smell of fires burning. The sounds of leaves crunching as you walk through the woods. Ah, what a marvelous creation our Lord has made a simple walk in the woods goes a long way to recharge the soul. Visit a local MetroParks or the Cuyahoga Valley National Park today. You will be surprised on how you feel when you come out of there.

The first quarter of the fraternal year is in the books. How does your council look? Do you have recruitment opportunities available? Are your programs starting up? And, are you reporting them via the State Program Reporting Form? Have you submitted your 185, 365, and 1295 to State and Supreme?

Our diocese continues to be in great shape. Our growth is at just under 20%. Ideally, we would like to be at 25% but Cleveland is leading the state as of 9/27/2025. I am confident that we will be closer to our first quarter goal when we look at the numbers this week. We are averaging 6-7 new members per a week which is good. We are targeting 6.7 right on track! There are 44 eMembers just waiting out there to join your council. Get with your DD or contact Diocesan Growth Coordinator Teran Taggart and we can help you get those members into your council. Need an Exemplification but do not have a team. Call and we can schedule one for you.

Over 90% of the 185s have been submitted to State Supreme. Thank you very much and about 75% of the 365s. We need to get those 365s submitted as they help to contact those individuals required for the Safe Environment training. I know that Supreme is behind in processing the Semi-Annual Audits. If you submitted

it BUT it still shows up as not, do not fret. Give it a couple of weeks before we start to panic.

35 councils are currently participating in the state general program and 52 are not. Granted, 19 of the 52 are inactive councils, so, we are about 51% participation. Remember, if you enter your programs in the state program reporting system, your Columbian Award Application (SP7) which is due to Supreme on June 30, 2026 will be sent to you. But you have to enter your programs.

District Deputies and Council Leaders should be working with their Field Agents to schedule Fraternal Benefit Events. Your council has to promote and attend these events to receive credit. But please, open the event to the parish and community. Not only are these events informative but also can be used to help recruit.

On September 5, the fraternal and

benefit teams for the diocese met in Independence. We had a great discussion on collaborating on a wide range of topics. One that we are proposing is that the we will be providing training for the Council Chancellors to help be a conduit for the field agents. Stay tuned as we plan for late October or early November for training sessions.

Paid your State Per Capita yet? If so, your State Convention Delegate Mileage and Per Diem checks were mailed out the last week of September. Second notices went out the last week as well.

Super Cash Bonanza rebates are next on my list to complete here in October. I know that this is much later than usual, and I do apologize. I am working to get them out as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.

Have a great month! Vivat Jesus! Jim

Worthy District Deputy, Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Council Membership Director and Fraternal Leaders,

As October begins, I can hear "At least there is the April Draft" whispering in my ears. Hopefully your Council is in finalizing your Football Crazr ticket sales.

Last month we were so close as a State hitting our first quarter Supreme incentive. As a Diocese, we slipped to third in percentage growth and overall intake or Council conversion of eMembers. For reference, when State or Supreme assigns an eMember Prospect to your Council Prospect Tab, we do our best to match the Prospect to a Council based on many factors especially if the member attends your Parish. We do make mistakes or the eMember Prospect may not be a good fit.

Please contact your District Deputy and myself as soon as possible and we will reassign the

GROWTH REPORT

eMember Prospect and they will no longer show up on your Prospect Tab. Please do NOT

"REJECT" the Prospect. Once notified, I will reassign the eMember Prospect. This will allow the eMember Prospect to be reassigned and available to another Council's Prospect tab in the future. If you have any questions, please feel free in reaching out to me.

Unless there are extenuating circumstances, Councils please do not expend any further energy on the eMember Prospect; If the Council has made a good faith effort in contacting the eMember Prospect, after 30 days, please notify your District Deputy and myself and I will remove the eMember Prospect from your Council Prospect tab.

As a process, any eMember Prospect that has been assigned to a Council Prospect tab over 90 days will be transferred to the State eMember holding Council,

98034. It will continue to allow State access to reassign the eMember Prospect in the future.

Beginning this month, I will be reaching out to Councils who have struggled in the past with Growth. For reference, the Cleveland Diocese currently has over twenty -one or 21 Councils who have not recruited a single member this year that is slightly higher than the fifteen or 15 Councils who did not bring in a member all of last Fraternal year.

"If you ain't growing you're dying."

If you have any questions about eMembership, Prospect Tab, Church Drives or anything dealing with Member Management, please feel free in reaching out to me.

Fraternally yours, Teran Taggart Diocesan Growth Coordinator

INSURANCE & INVESTMENTS

Did you know some life insurance policies include living benefits? Do yours?

Certain policies offer benefits during your lifetime – these are known as “living benefits.” One such benefit is a whole life insurance policy’s cash value, which can grow tax-deferred.

You can access it during your lifetime either through a partial loan or a full surrender of the policy, or as collateral. You would have this at your disposal to help with a down payment, tuition, to supplement your income in retirement, or in case of emergency. Secondly, living benefit

riders, which you can add to a whole life policy, can help make funds available to you if you’re diagnosed with a chronic or terminal illness. No one expects a devastating diagnosis, but if it happens, you’ll be able to put your whole life insurance policy to work immediately while you and your family need it. One of those riders is the new Chronic Illness Armor rider, which helps guard your family against the financial strain of a chronic health diagnosis. For a modest premium, this rider allows you to access your policy death benefit to cover mortgage payments, medical bills or any other expenses that come in the wake of a chronic illness. There are no restrictions on what you can use the accelerated benefits for! The Terminal Illness Rider will also accelerate your death benefit and can help provide funds if you receive a terminal diagnosis that shortens your life expectancy. Like the Chronic Illness Armor rider, this benefit can be used to cover anything from a family trip to end-of-life expenses. In short, life insurance with living benefit riders can help your family prepare not just for an unexpected death, but also serious illness through a means that allows you to use your benefits during your lifetime. It’s a daunting scenario to consider, but if it does happen, financial relief is possible. Set up time to meet with me, and we’ll create a personalized insurance plan that matches your needs.

Thank you!

Jason

Our Father, 3 Hail Marys, Glory Be

Reflect

There is perhaps no more beautiful celebration than when parents bring their newborn child to the waters of baptism. Parents, godparents, family, and friends share in this sacrament with incomparable joy. For in baptism, we share in Christ’s death and resurrection, and through the outward signs of water and oil, are made children of God and given the hope of eternal life with Him.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, our sins are forgiven, death is overcome, and life is victorious. We are called to be signs of hope to all people, especially those whose goodness, value, and dignity are undermined. As members of the Body of Christ, we carry this hope with us as we continue Jesus’ mission on earth.

Sadly, there is a devastating absence of hope today. We see this most profoundly in a sweeping disregard for human life in its most vulnerable forms and stages. Abortion and assisted suicide are products of hopelessness and despair. Yet even amid the increasing attacks on human life, we know that the “storms that buffet us will never prevail, for we are firmly anchored in the hope born of grace, which enables us to live in Christ and to overcome sin, fear and death.”1

We have been entrusted with a message of hope for the woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant or for the man diagnosed with a terminal illness. At these challenging moments, we must bring God’s presence, witnessing to His love, and inspiring a renewal of hope in those whose hearts are burdened. For “hope is born of love and based on the love springing from the pierced heart of Jesus upon the cross.”2 Confident of God’s presence within us, may we share the Gospel of Life with those most in need of hope.

Reflection adapted from “Life: Our Sign of Hope” (respectlife.org/life-our-sign-of-hope).

Over the years, I have raised the question to leaders of organizations, “What is your purpose?” It is a great way to start a conversation but it also allows for me to gauge the knowledge and understanding members have of their group and what they are doing. I do love the stories of personal impact that the group has made in the lives of each and every single person.

The Greater Cleveland Chapter is no different. I have asked every single Chapter President since 2019, what purpose does the Chapter serve? Answered varied depending on the individual, but a lot of the answers listed the things the Chapter does not necessarily their purpose. Now, I have to look myself in the mirror and ask, what is the purpose of the Chapter?

Today, I see a Chapter that has changed over the years. In the past, it was, and continues to be, a vehicle to provide a greater sense of community outreach that maybe some of our smaller councils may not be able to enjoy. Yes, there are great events that the Chapter sponsors, most notably, Clergy Appreciation Night in January. But it has to be something deeper than that.

Personally, I have found that the Chapter does all of those things but it provides me with a closer connection to our members and councils in the diocese and creates an

atmosphere of collaboration, fraternity, and excitement that only a group can do and what we can accomplish together.

With that, I would like to personally invite EVERY SINGLE COUNCIL in the Diocese of Cleveland to join the Greater Cleveland Chapter to help form a Chapter in your area. Years ago, there was a chapter in the Akron area. We would be honored if you join us or let us work together to bring it back to life. I plan to work with the DDs through the diocese to bring back the

collaboration we had prior to COVID.

Speaknig of events, join us on Sunday October 12 for our Columbus Day Dinner where we will honor the Chapter Knight of the Year and the Immediate Past Chapter President. I look forward to seeing you there. Preregistration ONLY! So sign up today.

May God continue to bless you and your families.

KNIGHTS IN ACTION

The Michael C Kalal Heart of Gold Charity

I have been doing a lot of networking and hopefully soon we will start making headways in donations for what we are looking to do supporting our first responders with safety equipment not covered or under covered by budgets. We had a plant sale in May at the Burton Fire Station which went well - we are looking to make this an annual event. We raffled off a collapsible wagon filled with plants and organic fertilizer. Hoping we can have a wagon donated each year as this sparked a lot of interest.

Our next event will be a Pulled Pork dinner at the Burton Fire Station on 4.11.26, which we hope to accomplish two things. Raising funds for first responders and the second - taste testing Michael's BBQ sauce to see if we might have the possibility to sell and use as a fund raising item. We will be doing a reverse raffle, side boards, a silent auction and 50-50 raffle throughout the night. We may also be holding something in the spring at St Helen's after the 11 AM mass on a Sunday for taste testing of the BBQ sauce. We hope to make this dinner an annual event.

Had a booth at the Geauga county fair to gain exposure - spoke with Pastor Ernie Sanders of the Doers of the Word church who has a radio show and he has invited me to speak during a show on both charities. His show is state wide in Ohio so hopefully we can gain a lot of traction.

Gods Tiny Miracles

As you know we have worked with the Geauga Pro-Life group to raise funds for a Baby Box in Chardon. As of last Friday the box was installed in the wall. Waiting to see how close we are to a date for a dedication. We will be

inviting a number of people including our state rep Steve Demetriou, who I worked with for support of the state to pay for 3 baby boxes of our choosing. This was accomplished when Gov. DeWine signed the budget in the end of June with no veto's. So we secured funding for baby boxes in Geauga, Lake and Portage Counties. Since Geauga was already funded, we are hoping they will allow us to move the funds to either Maple Heights or Bedford Heights.

We had a presentation in front of the Lake county fire chiefs to offer a baby box to the county. Fairport Harbor has agreed to host a box. We are waiting for it to go through the process in local government. Hopefully in the next couple of months we will hear a positive response. We will be working with John Noall of 40 days for Life to raise funds for ancillary costs. I have spoken with the fire chief of Kent Fire Department requesting he host a baby box given they are less than a mile away from KSU. I will be following up with him shortly to see if they have made a decision.

Our goal is during the dedication for the Chardon baby box that both Rep Demetriou and Senator Jerry Cirino attend along with firefighters as we would like to request a law be enacted that all new fire department buildings built in the state of Ohio is mandated to secure a baby box, the state pay for the boxes and we as an organization will fund the ancillary costs. Firefighters are strong advocates and I believe most Pro-Life organizations will be as well. We will see how the initial meeting goes.

Both Charities

On October 16th, I have been invited to speak in front of the St Mary's Chardon council about the charities so they may be involved and on October

2nd, I have been invited to speak in front of the Wickliffe council.

Spoke in front of the BurtonMiddlefield Rotary club which hosts Maple Splash in July in Burton. The Rotary club invites Non-Profits in to showcase what they do, so a great networking opportunity. This we hope to make an annual event.

Labor Day weekend we had a booth at the Great Geauga County Fair - which he hope to make an annual event.

We are happy to announce that we have been granted Tax Exempt status by the IRS.

Always looking for board members. Currently we have 5, with the hopes of picking up 3 more within the next month or so. Looking to round out at 15. If you know of anyone in our area, have them get in touch with me.

Both charities websites are up and running: godstinymiracles.org mckheartofgold.org. Emails are: amy@godstinymiracles.org amy@mckheartofgold.org. We are also on Facebook.

OFFICER TRAINING

Fraternal Trainers provide important support for Fraternal Leaders. Training for State, District, Council and Assembly officers is available to view On Demand, providing the opportunity to review essential information and best practices on your schedule.

OPERATIONS TRAINING

Operations training provides valuable information to support council leadership in managing their time, organizing council functions, and handling financial responsibilities. A council secures its place in the parish and the community through the activity of its members, and a smoothly running council can focus more time on charitable output.

Training that focuses on three of the important aspects of leading a council: the administration of council duties; council finances; and guidance on finding and completing the forms that are necessary for reporting contact information, fraternal activity, and more.

GROWTH AND RETENTION TRAINING

Membership is every member’s responsibility: keeping active makes a council successful, and a successful council keeps growing. These training sessions will help with tips for recruitment strategies and membership retention, along with the steps and best practices for holding activity and church drives and conducting exemplifications.

PROGRAMS AND ENGAGEMENT TRAINING

Running successful programs and events involves advance planning, communication, and member engagement. Training sessions that provide tips and strategies for helping your council to plan and promote events and keep your members involved in council activities.

The mission of Cor (Latin for “heart”) is to help focus Catholic men on Jesus by building Christ-centered brotherhood through a simple, flexible framework of prayer, formation and fraternity. Learn more about starting and supporting Cor in your council through these informative videos.
