JULY 2025

PRATICAL VISION, ENDURING MISSION

With an eye toward leading others to heaven, Father McGivney was attentive to the ways of the world as he worked to better the spiritual and temporal conditions of his immigrant parishioners. His innovative efforts to draw laypeople closer to Christ –especially through his founding of the fraternal Order of the Knights of Columbus – was creative, effective and bold.

A priest who knew him well wrote: Genial, approachable, of kindly

disposition, cheerful under reverses, profoundly sympathetic with those upon whom had fallen the heavy hand of affliction, a man of strict probity and sterling integrity in his business transactions. He was charitable to a fault ... The poor found in him a good Samaritan, and were the frequent recipients of his bounty. … There are few clergymen in my recollection who enjoyed in a greater degree than he the respect of his colleagues and the reverence of the people. … His energy was restless, ever seeking new outlets. And to this disposition are we indebted for the existence of the Knights of Columbus.

When he arrived for his first assignment at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, he met an ailing pastor who had to turn much of the pastoral work over to his new assistant. In a letter to his seminary mentor, he wrote that the whole work of the parish had been laid upon his shoulders and he had been unable to take even one day off. Seven years later, as pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Father McGivney’s workload only increased, with a mission church added to his duties.

Falling ill during the global viral pandemic of 1889-90, Father

PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED

MICHAEL MCGIVNEY

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.

Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen

McGivney developed tuberculosis and was forced to cut back on his routine to seek a cure. After months of heroic struggle against the illness, and after intense prayer for his parishioners and their future, he finally received the last rites and succumbed to pneumonia on Aug. 14, 1890, two days past his 38th birthday.

The funeral Mass and procession were attended by Knights and other Catholics from across Connecticut, and even secular news reports described him as an exemplary priest and a model Christian man.

For more information on Father McGivney and the Guild, visit the Father McGivney Guild at www.fathermcgivney.org.

You can play a key role in advancing

Father McGivney’s cause by joining the Guild for free and praying for his intercession and canonization. May Father McGivney intercede for you!

The entire month falls within the liturgical season of Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. The mission of Cor is to refocus Catholic men on Jesus Christ and to form and strengthen them in faith and virtue through a brotherhood committed to prayer, formation, and fraternity.

As we start a new Fraternal Year, I'm reminded of the Scripture found in Hebrews 13:1; “ Let Brotherhood and fraternity continue!” How we can we accomplish this?” through COR! COR outlines how to identify a leadership team, to advertising in your parish, how to structure gatherings, and even different content to discuss during your meetings! STATE OFFICER REPORT

Congratulations! Thanks to the efforts of many, the State of Ohio had repeated into the Circle of Honor. I am sure you all read about it throughout June. I know that many councils do not know or care too much about the Circle of Honor. But it is truly something that the state team tries to achieve and it puts Ohio on Supreme’s map as a jurisdiction that continues to exemplify our principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism as well as continues to grow.

Cleveland certainly did their part finish just north of 120% of our portion of the goal. Yes, Columbus out did us again, but I could not be prouder of all of you in the dedication you serve our members, councils, parishes, and communities.

With the start of July 1, we are at zero (0) and have the opportunity to build upon the last two years. Our new State Deputy, Mike Felerski, from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, is coming to meet with you on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Holy Family in Stow (3179 Kent). We will be attending their 11:30 AM Mass, lunch will follow around 12:45 PM, and the meeting will start at 1:30 PM. Bring your questions, concerns, and thoughts because now is the best time to get any answers you might be looking for. You will also get the opportunity to pick up your Football Crazr tickets. This important fundraiser helps councils raise funds for any of your programs without having to do any of the leg work or having the expense.

PSD Gary Eckstein will, again, explain the program and why it is critical for you and the state to continue to grow.

Many councils were handed awards at the state convention in May.

Congratulations to all! Your continued

success helps to show that our Order is vibrant in the diocese and growing. If you need help entering programs into the state system or just in general, please feel free to contact your District Deputy or a member of the Diocesan Staff.

Speaking of District Deputies and Diocesan Staff, there are some familiar and new faces. I want to personally thank Mike Incorvati and Teran Taggart for the last two years. Their continued dedication allows me to concentrate on other diocesan and state wide issues and responsibilities. This year, we have a couple of changes to note:

• John Brown moved from District #23 to District #21.

• Robert Walsh moved from District #32 to District #22

• Jim Maslach moved from District #22 to District #32

• Bill Christner is the new District Deputy in District #30

• Tom Donovan assumes the duties as the Diocesan DD Coordinator and District #24

• Teran Taggart assumes the duties as the Diocesan Growth Coordinator

District #23 is open right now and will be served by Tom Donovan and I until we can identify a District Deputy for that area. If you are interested and live in or near Chardon, Newbury, Painesville, or Perry, give us a call. There is no better job in the Order than being able to mentor and guide councils to be successful and prosper.

Changing duties at the start of the new fraternal year is always fun and challenging. I want to thank the delegates attending the 126th Annual State Convention for giving me the opportunity to serve you as State

Secretary. I shift from Treasurer to Secretary brings on new responsibilities such as State Per Capita, monitoring the state checking accounts and writing checks for the various activities and donations we do as a state. I look forward to the challenge and I know with God on our side, everything is possible.

It also means that in two short years, Cleveland will again be in the spotlight as assume the duties of State Deputy. There is a lot of activity going on to plan for those two years. I am looking for a few men to join my core team. If you are interested, drop me a note and let us talk about it.

The summer would not be complete with two key activities. First, the state campout. This is a GREAT family event and it is within 90minutes of Cleveland at the Cardinal Campground in Marengo, OH. This just down I-71 around Mt. Gilead State Park. Come out and join your brother Knights for cookouts, golf, games, and more. For more info, check out the state website. Second, would be the Supreme Convention. The convention this year is in Washington DC on August 5-7, 2025. This year, our delegate from Area Caucus #3 (Cleveland) is David Bowling, Jr from Windermere Council #2726. Thank you, David, for stepping up and being our delegate.

We know that it is July and it is HOT outside. But the Knights of Columbus continue to show their Faith In Action at our parish festivals, community parades, and local events. Please forward those pictures so that we can show the state and the world, what we do here in Cleveland.

Vivat Jesus!

Jim

Worthy District Deputy, Grand Knight, Financial Secretary, Council Membership Director and Fraternal Leader,

As Diocesan Growth Director, my job is to serve and assist you in anyway possible in growing your Council through member recruitment; completion of any membership forms; answer questions about Charity, Unity and Fraternity exemplifications; membership retention; growth or membership drives; and any questions about eMembership and Membership Management.

My goal is to ensure each and every Council in the

GROWTH REPORT

Diocese earn McGivney Award and at least recruit one person this fraternal year.

Understanding each Council and Parish are different, I will be reaching out to the District Deputies first and then the Council leadership afterward.

The State Growth goal this year is 2100 new members and 60 Star Councils; Our Diocesan growth goal is 358. As in past years, for every ten (10) eMembers that sign up, Supreme will reduce the Supreme growth goal by one. Last Fraternal year, due to the number of eMembers who signed up, Ohio Supreme goal was reduced to 1860 from 2000. As you can see,

eMembership is heavily favored by Supreme and is preferred when signing up new members.

Finally, I want to congratulate the State and all of the Cleveland Diocese Councils as the State of Ohio achieved the Supreme Growth goal last Fraternal year and earned Circle of Honor; This is the second year in a row for the State. This is a huge achievement and has not been achieved in sixteen (16) years.

I look forward to serving you the future.

Fraternally yours,

Teran Taggart 440-665-4078

Lafayette Council 3970 and St. Michael Parish Support

Zelie’s Home!

The Knights of Columbus, Lafayette Council 3970 of Independence, Ohio, hosted a fundraiser for Zelie’s Home during all masses on Mother’s Day weekend at St. Michael Parish. After communion, the presiding priest shared a brief overview of the vital work Zelie’s Home offers to mothers in need. At the conclusion of all masses, Brother Knights manned the church exits and distributed informational envelopes about Zelie’s Home, along with donation envelopes for parishioners to return in the following week's collection.

Our Lady of Victory 5613 Continues to Serve the Community

Not every council is out to win awards or get recognition. But the Knights of Columbus in Northeast Ohio continue to serve so many. Our Lady of Victory Council 5613 in Tallmadge is one such council. These men, and their families, serve the parish and community every single month. Here is just a small sampling of their activities.

• Our annual pancake breakfast typically brings in over $500 which we donate to our parish's Faith Formation program.

• Our council manages the outdoor Christmas light installation and takedown and have done this for about 8 years now.

• After last year's (2024) All Saints Day Mass, our council held a

Once again, the parishioners of St. Michael were incredibly generous, donating over $10,000 surpassing last year’s outstanding contribution! With additional matching funds from the Knights, the total donation to Zelie’s Home came to $10,600. On June 24, Financial Secretary George Schimek, Treasurer Jack Wolf (left) and Grand Knight Randy Katona (right) presented the donation to Executive Director Erin Hathaway at Zelie’s Home, where they were given an informative and heartfelt tour of the facility. Zelie’s Home empowers pregnant and parenting women by providing physical, emotional, spiritual, and professional support,

helping them build better futures for themselves and their children. Thank you to the St. Michael parish community for making a lasting difference in the lives of women and families in need in Northeast Ohio!

• event.

• To recognize Catechetical Sunday which coincides with the beginning of our parish's Faith Formation program (formerly PSR), usually in September, we serve a hot dog lunch for the parish and provide some sort of family entertainment.

• We annually support Tallmadge Good Neighbors and the Blessed Trinity Food Pantry in North Akron with donations through the Food for Families program.

• For the past several years, we have purchased books by famous Catholic author, Matthew Kelly, and sent them, along with the parish's Advent and Lenten mailings to all registered parishioners at Our Lady of

Victory.

• Several of our brother Knights perform a range of landscaping and maintenance functions for the parish grounds and building. We never have issues securing volunteers.

So, there's nothing extraordinary, just many ordinary activities which allow us to promote the Order's principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity, serving our parish community and beyond.

A simple thank you, from the state and diocesan leadership teams for your continued dedication to the church, parishioners, parishes, and communities to which you serve.

‘Like an orchestra’: Stow EMS lauded for saving Stow man’s life, helping injured wife.

April Helms

Akron Beacon Journal

June 7, 2025

Nearly a year ago, Keith and Lori Limbacher were spending a typical evening in their Stow home when Keith lost consciousness on the couch. Suddenly, the routine day became one that would change their lives.

Lori quickly called 911 on June 30, 2024.

However, in the process of trying to get her husband, then 64, off the couch and onto the floor, she tripped

over an ottoman and broke her left leg. She was able to give Keith mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as instructed by a dispatcher.

A Stow police officer arrived about three minutes later, Lori said, and he was able to move the ottoman and give chest compressions until members of the Stow Fire Department arrived about a minute later.

Today, Keith has made a nearly complete recovery from his heart attack, and Lori has assumed many of the activities she did before breaking her tibia. The Limbachers were able to attend two different ceremonies, one by Ohio Emergency Medical Services and one by the Knights of Columbus, where the Stow Fire Department was commended for helping the couple.

The Knights of Columbus honored the fire department with the Blue Coat Award, which is given to police, fire, and first responders as an expression of gratitude and appreciation for their service to the community. The department was honored during a June 3 dinner in Stow.

“The award acknowledges individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and embody mercy and compassion,” said Don White, a member of Knights of Columbus. He added that Keith Limbacher also is a member.
