Catholics Throughout The Cleveland Diocese Welcome Pope Leo XIV
On fire for the faith, Father McGivney was also approachable and trusted by the powerful and lowly alike. His ability to mourn with those in sorrow and bring joy and support to those in need of encouragement marked his priestly ministry. To him, faith was a gift to be treasured by every Catholic, and there were no human boundaries that could not be overcome by the love and care of a good and gracious God. Despite the anti-Catholic sentiments of the time, Father McGivney wanted to see Catholics keep the faith and thrive. He often stepped outside the church walls to become an advocate for parishioners in court to keep their families together; he engaged cordially with those of other Christian faiths, even a prominent New Haven minister; and he staged plays and fairs for all comers.
It can well be said that Father McGivney was a man ahead of his time, anticipating by nearly a century the Second Vatican Council’s
HIS VISION
“universal call to holiness” for laypeople as well as clergy, and embodying the opening words of the Vatican II document Gaudium et Spes:
The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ. Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts.
A man of practical thought and action, Father McGivney knew that the pursuit of holiness did not consist in an aloof attitude or separation from people and their problems. As a parish priest, his primary concern was for the welfare both spiritual and temporal of the largely Irish-American and immigrant Catholic population that teemed into New Haven, where he began his ministry at St. Mary’s Church in 1878.
Catholics then were especially vulnerable. It was a time when many employers had a policy of “Irish Need Not Apply.” Immigrants often had to take the most dangerous positions in the mines, on the railroads, and in the factories. Accidents, disease and overwork led too often to the family’s
PRAYER FOR THE CANONIZATION OF BLESSED
MICHAEL MCGIVNEY
God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church.
Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen
breadwinner suffering an early death, leaving his wife and children destitute, with no social safety nets.
Father McGivney had lived through hard times himself as the eldest of 13 children, six of whom died young. After finishing elementary school, he joined his father in the factory for three years, and this experience formed in him a deep solidarity with working men and their families. He also knew personally the effects of the death of a breadwinner. His own father died in 1873 and young Michael had to leave seminary to tend to the family before returning to his studies.
These experiences viewed through the lens of faith formed the man who went on to form the Knights of Columbus as an answer to the many problems his people faced. A little more than four years after being assigned as an assistant priest to St. Mary’s, he gathered a handful of men in the church basement to establish a new fraternal association dedicated to helping men and their families with spiritual and temporal needs.

HABEMUS PAPAM!
Knights of Columbus join the universal Church in celebrating the election of Pope Leo XIV
From his very first public appearance May From his very first public appearance May 8, Pope Leo XIV the first U.S.-born pontiff in history has articulated a vision for his pontificate and the Catholic Church: one of peace and unity, centered in Jesus Christ.
“Peace be with you all,” the pope proclaimed from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica. “Dear brothers and sisters, these are the first words spoken by the risen Christ, the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for God’s flock. I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world.”
“It is the peace of the risen Christ. A peace that is unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering. A peace that comes from God, the God who loves us all, unconditionally.”
Before his election, Pope Leo XIV was known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a native of Chicago and a member of the Order of St. Augustine. A former missionary in Peru, where he served as bishop of Chiclayo, he most recently served as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops since April 2023.
Inspired by Pope Leo XIII, whose landmark encyclical Rerum Novarum in 1891 addressed the social and economic upheaval of the Industrial Revolution, the Holy Father reflected on the selection of his papal name during his first official speech, to the College of Cardinals on May 9.
“Sensing myself called to continue in
this same path [as Leo XIII], I chose to take the name Leo XIV,” he said. “In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor.”
In a May 8 statement, Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly affirmed the Knights of Columbus’ commitment to be strong supporters and close collaborators with Pope Leo XIV.
Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly and his wife, Vanessa, are pictured greeting Cardinal Robert F. Prevost now Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican’s Hall of Blessings on Sept. 30, 2023, following his creation as a cardinal. (Knights of Columbus Photo) “I pledge our loyalty to Pope Leo XIV as well as our prayers today and every
day of his pontificate,” the supreme knight said. “In the years ahead, we will proudly stand with him as we seek together to build up the Kingdom of God.”
“He’s a very easy person to talk to,” said Supreme Knight Kelly, who met the future pope twice in 2023. “I think he’s a very balanced man … and very intelligent. It’s a very, very good thing for the Church, what happened today. … This was a conclave of surprises, I would say, brought to us by a God of surprises.”
Pope Leo XIV held his first general audience (Wednesday, May 21) and formally took possession of Rome’s papal basilicas.

COR CORNER
The beginning of the month of June concludes the liturgical season of Easter, with Pentecost celebrated on June 8. The rest of the month is Ordinary Time, which is represented by the liturgical color green. This symbol of hope is the color of the sprouting seed and arouses in the faithful the hope of reaping the eternal harvest of heaven, especially the hope of a glorious resurrection. It is used in the offices and Masses of Ordinary Time.
COR: Leadership
State Evangelization and Faith Formation (EFF)
Director: Appointed by his State Deputy, is meant to be a year-over-year position dedicated to implementing, advancing, and integrating the evangelization and faith formation initiatives of the Supreme and State Councils respectively.
Grand Knight: Adoption of Cor should only add minimal work to the Grand Knight. He is encouraged to survey all council members and then appoint and empower an Evangelization and Faith Formation (EFF) Director who will own all aspects of implementing and running Cor. The Grand Knight is encouraged to attend, but is not required to, nor does he have an official role in the event itself. He is expected to continue to foster goodwill, collaboration, and communication with the pastor, specifically by first asking for the pastor’s permission to implement Cor for the parish and also how he would like the Knights to work with any existing men’s groups or ministries. To that end, he is encouraged to bring the EFF
Director into any appropriate and corresponding meetings with the pastor and other men’s groups or ministries in the parish.
Council
Evangelization and Faith Formation
Director: Appointed by the Grand Knight, he will facilitate the planning, structure, and hosting of all Cor gatherings. He is encouraged to build an EFF team that will help shoulder these responsibilities, especially if meeting more frequently. He will ensure adequate preparation for each event. Preparation includes reserving space, communicating timing and content, and ensuring the meeting is run excellently every time. Along with the Grand Knight, the EFF Director should coordinate and communicate with any existing parish ministries, particularly men’s ministries in such a way that fosters collaboration and the possibility of a hybrid experience achieving the aims and goals of both
groups. The Council Director is supported by the State EFF Director and his Team.
Pastor/Chaplain: The pastor must give his permission for Cor to be held at the parish. He is primarily responsible for the formation of the souls in his parish and therefore should be consulted and involved. He should be made aware of the scheduled meetings and their content focus with a standing invitation to lead prayer and to speak to the men as he so desires.

STATE OFFICER REPORT
We have hit the home stretch for the fraternal year. There are only 30-days remaining before we get to start all over again. Is your council primed to be a Star Council? Have you checked to see what you still need to do?
• Father McGivney Award: 17Councils in the Diocese have reached or exceeded their Supreme Goal
• Founder’s Award: 21-Councils have met their Fraternal Benefit Events Goal
• Columbian Award: 17-Councils have submitted their application already. These are due June 30th.
• Administrative Requirements: 64-Councils have submitted their #185, 48-Councils their #365 Reports to Supreme
• Safe Environment: 29-Councils are compliant with the Office of Youth Protection
There is still time for your council to get the Columbian Award Application into Supreme. If you utilized the state general program reporting tool, your Grand Knight was sent a copy of the SP7 for review. All you would need to do is sign it and send it in. If you need another copy, contact me and I will forward it to you. In reality, we could have as many as 30-Star Councils shattering our number from last year. If you need help, ask your District Deputy or contact me. We are here to assist you.
May was an extremely busy time for all of us. Many of you took the time to make sure your forms, Exemps, and activities were sent to Supreme and State. Thank you.
It started with the Exemplification of the Patriotic Degree in Westlake. District Master Brandon Robinson and
his staff did a great job. This was the first time that the ladies and families were invited into the Exemplification. Many of them thought that it was a great experience and they were not aware of all the involvement Catholics were in American history. Congratulations to District Master Robinson for another great Exemplification.
Many of you took part in the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion whether a 4th Degree Turnout, being a sponsor, or with the liturgical ceremonies. Thank you to all.
On May 17th, Ca$hman and Cardinal came into Cleveland for the annual Charity Campaign drawing. The drawing is normally done at the State Convention, but due to the Cleveland Marathon and a concert, the convention was moved to Memorial Day Weekend. As a state, we reached the $1 Million barrier back-to-back selling over 204,850 tickets. Cleveland certainly did its share selling over 52,560 tickets #1 diocese in the state, again. Ca$hman was very thank you for all the hard work every council did this year.
Then there was the state convention making its return to downtown Cleveland for the first time since 2010 at the Hilton Downtown over Memorial Day Weekend. Nearly 600 members and guests attended the event. It was a great time by all as we tried some new items to get some interest back in attending like our shuttle bus. Thank you to all those that attended and for those of you that did not, we missed you.
At the convention, we elected the new state officers for the 2025-2026 Fraternal Year. They are as follows:
State Deputy-Elect Mike Felerski
State Secretary-Elect Jim Maslach
State Treasurer-Elect Chris Sarka
State Advocate-Elect Tony Offenberger
State Warden-Elect Stewart Vetter
These men, along with Immediate Past State Deputy Jeff Kiliany, and our ladies, will continue to keep Ohio tops in the Order. Please keep them all in your prayers.
A very special thank you to, now, Past State Deputy Mark Siracusa and Beth, for their 12-years of service to the Ohio State Council. Mark has been battling a number of health issues but continues to do his part to help the state where he can. Mark will continue to be on the Ohio Charity Foundation and be available to help where he can. Thank you.
For those of you who listed to AM1260 the Rock, there is some exciting news. Not only was The Rock a supporter of the State Convention this year, but they have just announced expanding their range into western Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. You can now listen to The Rock on AM930 WEOL and FM100.3. Congratulations to The Rock and we look forward to sharing the Good News of the Gospel across the entire diocese.
With the new administration under Mike Felerski to start, please mark your calendars for the State Tour Meeting on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Holy Family in Stow. More details will be coming out soon. Come and meet the new state deputy, his team, and get the info you need to be Star Council in 2025-2026.
God Bless, Jim Maslach
State Secretary-Elect
Thank you Cleveland for reaching our portion of the State goal for Ciricle of Honor. However, the state still needs to invite less than 200 men! Let us continue to invite men and their families to join our Order.
As we step into the final month of our fraternal year, I want to thank you all for all your hard work and dedication in Growing our membership. Now is the time where we must persevere and make the final push! If your council hasn’t been very active in membership efforts, don’t worry, it not to late. There is still time to make a difference. Make the most of June by hosting events, organizing church drive and reaching out personally to potential members. These actions will result in more than just adding numbers, they will welcome men and their families into an organization that

STATE CONVENTION
As the sun sets on another annual state convention, we are not sure if Downtown Cleveland will ever be the same again. This convention marked a lot of firsts and trails while dealing with some of the same old concerns. A total of 550 people attended the convention from across the state representing 168 councils. The Hilton was a top tiered facility to host the convention bringing their “A” game. The Friday Night Party was a time for brothers and families to get together, talk, and just enjoy themselves. There were some games and prizes from around the state up and who can’t forget the photobooth! So many people took advantage of that.
We also had three hospitality rooms open for our members’ enjoyment. Stew Vetter and Greg Singlar, our two candidates for State Warden from the Toledo Diocese, joined State Deputy Jeff Kiliany to host as many people as possible.
We also offered, for the first time, excursions and a shuttle bus, to help show off the downtown area. Many people took advantage of that seeing The Cathedral of St. John the

Saturday the General Business Session started with State Deputy Jeff Kiliany introducing our Supreme Representative, Supreme Director John Appelbaum, to Ohio. We took care of business and got ready to cap the evening with a banquet only a state deputy can enjoy.
We wrapped up on Sunday with the election of the State Warden, a luncheon for the men and ladies, and left knowing that the Knights of Columbus are there putting their faith into action at home, work, in our parishes, and communities.

We received communication from St Augustine and are expecting up to 120 children/150 total with staff. Magician is returning. Remember, this event may be counted as Council/Assembly Program. The Chapter will maintain a sign-in sheet for volunteers and publish totals which will be provided to Chapter members.
The Chapter Trustees are soliciting nominations for next Fraternal year. If anyone is interested, please contact a trustee or officer.
Due to scheduling conflict at Garfield Hall, both July 11th and August 8th Chapter meetings will be held virtually.
Thank you, Chapter Officers
HELP WANTED!
We need help unloading food deliveries at the food pantry at the Father Michael Wittman Ozanaam Center. Would you be willing to help out?
Every Thursday from 8am to about 9.15am we need two people to unload fresh produce. On the fourth
Monday of each month, from 1 to 2.30 pm, we need 6-7 people to unload nonperishable food. You do not have to commit to every fourth Monday afternoon or every Thursday morning.
Instead, you would be one of the volunteers that Ken McCarthy could call when he is scheduling volunteers; if you are available great, if you
aren’t, not a problem.
If you are willing, please let me know if you are potentially available on Monday afternoons or Thursday mornings or both.
Thank you, Mary Golrick
