From the Commodore

Greetings Members, Annual General Meeting

All members are encouraged to attend, as the AGM presents Club Management with the opportunity to report the status of the Club’s business directly to the members and provides for the election of the Management Committee for the coming year. Each year there are questions regarding our AGM, so this year I thought I’d summarise the procedure stipulated in the Constitution.

A Notice of Meeting is to be sent to Members within 30 days of the selected date. This year’s AGM will be held in the Club’s Dining Hall on Monday, August 14th, starting at 7:00. A quorum is required to conduct the Club’s business, which is at least 7.5% of Financial Members. Based on a current Members list, this will be around 120. If a quorum is not present within 30 minutes of the start, then the AGM will be adjourned, and a new date decided by the Members present. Hence the desire for a quorum on the night.

Clubhouse and Facilities

Development WA have confirmed that they have initiated tendering for the new clubhouse facility. Tender documents were sent to a short list of contractors in early June, with a four-week tender period. They have chosen to utilise an Early Contractor Involvement contract in order to reduce project risks and uncertainties. The City of Joondalup and ORSSC will continue to provide input to the project as it moves through detailed design to construction. The estimated completion date for construction is October 2024, and we will provide the Members notice of changes in the program. We anticipate reviewing a proposed tenancy agreement from the City in the coming months, with the intention to make a recommendation to the Members for final endorsement.

The discussions with the Department of Transport regarding hardstand and wet-pen storage are still in the early stage, and a survey from Members regarding their interest in utilizing these facilities will be used to support our position to the State.

Fifty-Year History

Since 1973 the Club has been building a place for the community to join others in fishing, sailing, diving, and boating, not only around Ocean Reef, but all along the coast of Western Australia. Our

canvassing of our legacy members have added much to the story, and we are fortunate to have one of the founding members, Bob Mason, step forward to provide the Club with his archival and recollections of how the Club started. We will document as much as we can to provide current and future Members with a complete picture of the people and events that brought us to where we are today. This will not only inform us but will also serve as an example of what a community can do when they have a vision and are ready to work together to make it happen.

Best regards,

UPCOMING EVENTS (CLUB)

Just a reminder we have the Social Sections Bogan Bingo coming up on Saturday 22nd July – if you’re up for a night of laughs, this is the event for you. I’ve been to a Bogan Bingo in the past and it’s great fun.

Next up is The Chain – A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac on Saturday 29th July. Tickets are selling fast so get in quick.

Sheila will be holding an Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Saturday 26th August – more details to follow.

Saturday 2nd September will be the Club’s 50th Birthday Party – a 70s-inspired Gala night. Tickets will be on sale soon!

Hello Members,

I hope you’ve all been enjoying your time down at the Club. While the hot weather is clearly done and dusted for the year, it is great to see so many Members still down here on those clear crisp days when that Winter sun was out and shining.

Hardstand – Tag and Test

In order to comply with safety regulations and mitigate the risk of power disruptions, it is imperative that all boat owners within the Hardstand have their power cords tagged and tested by a qualified electrician. This process will help identify any potential faults or hazards and allow us to rectify them promptly. Thank you to everyone who have actioned this request – there is now a noticeable difference and we haven’t experienced a power trip since.

Galley Winter Hours

As we enter into our quietest months during Winter, the Galley will be open for dinner on Fridays from 5pm – 8pm (an hour later than the usual Summer time of 4pm). All other hours will stay the same. In the Spring and Summertime, we will be increasing our opening hours so we can serve more Members.

Sunday 3rd September I invite you all down to celebrate the Dads with our Fathers Day “Parmi and a Pint” for $20. Running all day from 12pm – 7pm. Bookings are recommended – you can book online or phone the office.

Employee Recognition

I would like to shine the spotlight on some of our key front-of-house staff that have been doing an amazing job servicing our Members. These staff members were recognised and rewarded at our quarterly Staff meeting.

Joey Abdullie & Georgia Gaston –Duty Managers

Joey has a level of professionalism and knowledge that doesn’t go unnoticed. Joey handles any situation with extreme professionalism and we are lucky to have him on our team. Joey also recently conducted a Wine Tasting Staff Training evening to upskill our Bar Staff on all of our offerings which involved putting together an information sheet with a summary of each of the wines for our staff to build their knowledge on, in order to serve our Members with more knowledge.

10

Georgia Gaston started working in the Galley and has since moved to the Bar and is now a valued Duty Manager. She has taken on more shifts and is also happy to come in with minimal notice, is always flexible and has built great relationships with the staff and members. Having happy, professional and friendly front-of-house staff is key to providing great customer service.

Aimee Harper – Galley

Aimee Harper is the lovely lady serving most of you on the Galley till. It’s not an easy job, but Aimee does it with ease and always has a smile on her face. I have received lots of great feedback not only from the Committee but also Members.

Feel free to congratulate them when you see them next. Staff recognition is important so we can continue to build a strong Club culture. If you have any positive feedback I would love to hear itplease email me at manager@orssc.asn.au.

Ocean Reef Marina Development Photos

We are lucky enough to have friends in the Joondalup City RSL Sub Branch that are Pilots. LtR Neil Forbes and Paul Falconer-West do regular flyovers and send us progress update photos. I have done a little markup for when our new club will be going which is much easier to see from a birds eye view. Thank you to Paul and Neil for providing these images.

Functions and Events

With 3 function areas all facing the ocean complete with stunning views, we have the facilities to hold an array of functions and events from Weddings to Birthdays, Corporate Seminars, Wakes and General Functions. There are room hire fees, however if you would like to set the room up yourself with your own tablecloths, the room hire is free for financial members which some of you may not know. If you have an upcoming event and would like to enquire, please contact Deb Clarke, our Functions Coordinator on 9401 8800. Alternatively, you can read all about it at https://www.orssc.asn.au/functions

I look forward to seeing you all down at the Club soon.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Boat Fishing Report - April

April Comp - Held on Saturday 22nd

The weather once again turned up for our comp day. 31 people signing on for the boat comp with 14 boats in total. Great turn out to see what a day out on the big blue would conjure up.

A couple boats headed out to the 90m drop off fishing for pink snapper and Samson fish.

Sean Neil landed a good pink snapper of 6.17kg from the depths, well rewarded fishing those sort of depths. Back in closer Belinda Mallon was getting stretched with a nice sambo.

Belinda also picked up a thumper trevally of 828 grams. We have had some really nice king george weigh in lately and Jamie Hannds fishing his first boat comp took out the largest with a kidney slapper at 892grams. Plenty of pink snapper coming off the 3 mile strip with the aid of chummed up pillies and fishing light bait or plastics. Joe and Phil having no issues finding decent size snook in the weed beds, both weighing in solid fish.

Our weigh in started with two mini juniors, both brothers Kye and Devon Whitt hitting it out.

Devon weighed in 1 species with 10.9 points. Brother Kye getting the win with 3 species and 49.5 points. We only had one Junior weigh in, the last of the Whitt clan, Harley. Harley having a very respectful bag of 3 species and 50.2 points. Well done Whit boys and good on dad Lance for getting the grommets out on the boat.

Our Veterans had some decent fish come over the scales. Colesly running in third with 4 species and

Two Day Boat Comp 6th & 7th of May 2023Cancelled due to SWW.

June 3rd - 4th being the carry over day.

61.1points. Welcome back for Phil Pollard running in second with 5 species and 70 points. In first for the vets was Terry with 9 species and 167.7 points. Well done vets. Be good to see someone give Terry a run. Maybe we have to get the One Armed Bandit off the couch?

The ladies competition this year so far has been very interesting and is coming down the wire. Gemma Baynes in third had 3 species with 38.1 points. Sam Broadhurst in second with 5 species

18

and 86 points. In first position with a great bag was Belinda Mallon, 7 species and 127.3 points. Mint work ladies, you girls are going great.

The Mens was a close one between the top 4 spots with heaviest specie points dividing the cream. In third was Franga who had 7 species and 107.4 points. Second was myself with 8 species and 115.6 points. In first once again was Joe W, 8 species and 128.9 points. Congratulations Joe, solid bag of fish.

Our next boat comp would have been our two day boat comp at the start of May. This comp has been canceled due to SWW for both days. The next comp for me to report on will be our June comp.

Boat Captain Buckets signing out. You wont catch em sitting on the couch.

The Angling Report (continued)

Boat Fishing Report – June

Summary

Our annual May 2 day boat comp was a complete write off due to hectic easterlies blowing in excess of 24 knots both days cancelling out fishing. Not often easterlies are such a burden to fishing, but in this case the it was there was no chance of any boats getting out over the two days.

Our next boat fish was the June competition and the weather forecast was looking a lot more promising. Apparently 10-12 knots easterly backing off after lunch to 5 knots. Well it did back off, but not until 2pm. It was a little scrappy in the morning but still easy enough to fish. We had good numbers sign on with 28 competitors across 12 boats. First up Troy and myself had troubles getting past the trevally, they where in plague proportions at the normal herring haunt. This found us travelling to a northern reef casting small twisties into the wash to nab the elusive Tommy Rough. Matty Knaylor and Gem had no issues finding the fish. Matty landed himself a Sambo and Yellow Tail King Fish. Both Seriola are now categorised as 2 different species and are a good one to take back into the weigh for both weight and species points. Blue Fin Tuna where in majority of peoples bags, they are obviously still in good numbers. Our boat picked up one whilst anchored and chumming for pinks using floating baits. Whilst the majority are getting caught trolling among bait balls. Some decent size Sambos coming across the scales with Miller Cromptyon taking out the largest for the comp with a 10.180kg

model. Always plenty of trevally around this year, though Andrew Lakos 1.302kg fish was and absolute brute. The dhufish have been a bit harder to find during our boat comps, especially anything north of 10kg. Terry took out the largest dhufish for the day with a 5.920kg and also landed a very decent King George of 915grams.

The results for our competition went as follows. We had 2 mini juniors weighing in for the day. Braxton Shephard with one species and 16.2 points taking out first. His brother coming in second with one species and 10.1 points. Only one junior weighing in, Connor Elliman.

Connor had 1 species and 19.7 points. Connor quite often catches more fish than dad Drew.

The veterans was a Terry Bell show with the only himself to fish the category. He had a great bag with 11 species and 204.5 points - very solid bag. The ladies section seen a club favourite pull on the boots for a fish. Dawn Cass hit the board in third with 1 species and 10.2 points. Gemma and Belinda fought it out for the top two positions with only 2 points separating them both. Gemma in second had 6 species and 113.4 points. Belinda taking the chocolates with 7 species and 115.5 points. Good haul of fish ladies. The mens was another close finish between the top three. Francis running in third with 7 species and 107 points.

Mitch Bell, part-time fisherman - full-time accountant, hit the podium in second place with 9 species and 117.8.In first place was knocking off office fingers was Matty Knaylor. Matty had 8 species and 125.5 points. Good win Matty and a first for the new boat. Troy and myself did not make the weigh in due to a fuel issue on the Starboard engine. Later diagnoses found the main copper pipe between tank and fuel/water separator was the issue. It had the tinniest of pin hole leak in it right behind a clamping point! Lucky it happened locally and not a week later when we where due to be on Thevenard Island. Thanks for Francis for sorting out the weigh, much appreciated.

20

The next boat comp is just a normal one day comp held on Saturday 1st July with the carry over being the 2nd of July.

Boat Captain Buckets signing out. If fishing was that easy, it would be called catching.

Beach Fishing Report – May

Summary

Millpond weather sets the scene for a spectacular weekend of fishing! Father and Son Daniel and Crew spell double trouble for the Mulloway! Colzy picks up a few good species on the way back from Denham, Including a BIG Yellowfin Bream. Mystery species STILL not caught making it jackpot to a very juicy $280, Definitely worthwhile wetting a line in the next comp and trying to get a variety of fish.

Highlights

Spectacular weather for our May comp seen 14 anglers weigh in. There would have been close to double that, if a large majority of the club weren’t away fishing up north in Denham for their yearly trip. It would have been the calmest comp I have fished in I don’t know how long… It’s so tranquil when you get those nights when everything is so still and there are thousands of stars lighting up the sky, and you just stare at that glowstick waiting, hoping the rod will buckle whilst admiring the surroundings. There was quite a lot of marine life on display over the weekend. We seen dolphins come right in close, a pack of Seals jumping out of the water and putting on a great display for us. We even seen a Stingray patrolling the shallows of the weed looking for an easy meal.

LUCKY COMPETITOR PRIZE

Mark Purchas

Graeme Cole had a big weekend fishing out in the boat before deciding he would do some landbased fishing on the way back home from shark bay so he could enter a bag in. It secured him second place, with Ricko still securing top spot in the Vets.

Daniel Bell & Crew headed away for the weekend and both landed Mulloway with dad getting the bigger specimen of 13.24kg, Absolute Cracker!! Crew also got a Mulloway of 1.46kg and he pulled it in all by himself! What an absolute LEGEND! He also managed 7 species a bag better than most of the men’s. For all the blokes out there start fishing hard now! In another 13 years this young bloke will be fishing in the men’s making it very tough!! A shout out to Boe Bell who made her brother a cute poster for catching his Mulloway.

22

Mark Purchas fished well catching and releasing a Wobby Shark giving him the 20 weight points and securing third spot. Adam Broadhead weighed in a reasonable bag also with 5 species 4 of which were heaviest and narrowly missing third place only by 1 point. With only 4 comps to go for the year there isn’t much separating a few of the top spots. Winter is approaching so we might be in for

Beach Fishing Report – June

Summary

Freezing conditions keep numbers low, but some great fish weighed in. A 16kg Sambo, 1.6kg Baldy, 8.6kg Gummy shark & a 760g Flathead were some of the species rewarding the anglers who put in the effort.

Highlights

Although the weather was FREEZING it was really a great weekend to be on the beach competing against some very good anglers. The early mornings were tough with temperatures dropping into single digits. I think this did keep a few anglers at home this comp. We had 12 anglers weigh in, but no women, juniors and only 1 mini legend Crew.

Crew fished his little heart out and got rewarded with 5 species and 84 points. Unfortunately, the Mulloway alluded him this comp, but it wasn’t from lack of trying. The passion this young bloke shows towards fishing is only getting me more excited to be a dad. I just hope my future child is keen as this little dude is! In the Vets we had 5 competitors, with Locky’s 8.62kg Gummy Shark getting him over the line. Locky told me he literally just picked up his rod to check his bait and felt something playing with his bait. He struck and hooked into the culprit. Locky had 7 species in total giving him a total of 135 points. Graeme Cole earnt himself the runner up prize getting the heaviest Skippy, Pike, Whiting and Tailor. Although most people struggled to find any Tailor, Colsey joked

about how he struggled to get away from them. Hah! Ricko finished in third place with 74 points.

Joe Wettinger is continuing to show he isn’t just a boat fisherman with an impressive bag on a quiet weekends fishing. Joe came third with 6 species, which included the heaviest Flatty of the day at 761g. He also caught a Sand Bass which you don’t see weighed in all that often. His whiting was more than double of others, weighed in at 148g. Pommy John came second with 2.. Wait 5… No that’s not right… 8 Species… This bloke loves leading you up the garden path. I must admit though, it does always make it interesting emptying his hessian bag onto the bench. John did have the 8 species including a nice Skippy of 579g. I’m sure John thought he had it in the bag, until he saw the large 16kg Samson fish that got pulled out

24

of my Iceytek insulated fish bag. I ended up taking out the mens comp with 6 species, with 3 heaviest. I managed to get a small Pink Snapper too, just over 1.5kg. My total score was 151 points which, I believe, has me now in first place overall. Honourable mention to Kiwi, my fishing mate for the weekend, who lost a decent size shovel nose only 20-30m out. We had the head torches on it, and I honestly thought a few more pumps with the rod and it would have been within gaffing distance. Unfortunately, it rubbed through the leader and swam off to grow a little bigger for next time. Kiwi persisted though and was rewarded with a 1.6kg Baldchin Grouper the following morning! Something you don’t catch off the beach on a regular occurrence.

Although it was cold, I could only hope we get the similar sort of conditions for the next few comps.

Fishing Competition Results

Fingers and toes crossed we get some nice weather between all the rain and storms that will no doubt be coming as we head into the heart of winter.

The Sailing Report

Season Summary

We have officially started our new 2023/24 season with the Winter series just starting and the first official Dinghy Section race of the new series kicking off and proving to be an instant success.

The end of last season’s festivities wrapped up with our Annual Presentation Evening. Prizes for each series and standalone races were presented, as well as Champion Yacht, Crewperson of the Year, Club Person of the Year, the Wrecker’s Award and the new Regatta Competitors Award.

A big congratulations to the skippers and crew who placed in our consistency series that runs across our three Seasons:

For our standalone races, the winners of the Rear Commodore’s Cup during Open Day in October, our long race to Centaur, our trek north to Alkimos the Ladies’ Skippers Race and the new Regatta Competitors Award were awarded as follows:

Rear Commodore’s Cup: Venomous

Centaur Race: Bull Bar

Alkimos Race: Bull Bar

Ladies’ Skippers Race: Kate Phipps

Regatta Competitors Award: Mikayla James

The individual trophies are presented to welldeserving individuals who have stood out during the season. Our Crewperson and Club Person of the Year awards aim to recognise those who have gone above and beyond to ensure our section keeps running smoothly and assist our fellow sailors. The

Wrecker’s Award, however, recognizes the year’s most unfortunate skipper with the most breakages.

Crewperson of the Year: Paul Phipps

Club Person of the Year: Ken Wood

Wrecker’s Award: Scott Forrest

Finally, our Champion Boat is awarded to the skipper and crew of the boat who, across our three consistency series, has come out on top for the year. This year, Scott Forrest and the crew of Whim a Way took out the top trophy with a comfortable lead – a well-deserved win.

A thank you to everyone who chipped in to help with the setup and running of the Presentation Evening which turned out to be a huge success and a fun

26

night. A big congratulations and thank you to all the skippers and crew who participated in the year’s events. Of course, we cannot thank our amazing Start Crew enough who, despite the ever-growing impact of the marina development on our races, continue to show up and ensure our races go ahead smoothly.

I look forward to another year of smooth sailing (literally and figuratively) and will see you out on the water for Season 2023/24.

The Power Boat Report

Season Summary

Winter is a rather quiet time for the section and this cold spell certainly doesn't have members rushing to pull the covers of their boats.

The coming months will see a surge of activity with trips planned for coastal runs through to an invitation to overnight at Garden Island and Mangels Bay as soon as the weather warms up.

Our sections held a very successful event recently in conjunction with the Marine Safety Section from the Department of Transport. The event consisted of an in-depth presentation on how to inspect and service boat owner's inflatable life jackets. This inspection had several member’s jackets deemed unserviceable or in need of repair, which for the most part was done by the DOT staff on site and at no cost to the owners. For jackets deemed completely unserviceable a $30 voucher was provided to put towards the cost of purchasing new jackets.

At the conclusion of the session, a live demonstration of inflating a life jacket was undertaken to show the effectiveness of the jackets in case of an emergency.

An expired flare and Eprib bin was also provided to assist members with the safe disposal of these items, in excess of 100 outdated flares were handed in on the day along with a number of the old series Epribs. Throughout the days we received information on the soon to be released revised marine safety regulations surrounding flares and life jackets for various size vessels both in shore and offshore.

The section is now in the planning stage of arranging a live flare demonstration day at the club to instruct us on the safe use of various types of flares and final dates will be announced shortly.

The Diving Report

Season Summary

Summary

Advance Open Water Qualifications for Two Dive Section Members. Congratulations!

Highlights

Graham Hindley has had the pleasure of qualifying two dive section members, Peter & Ryan Hawker in Advance Open Water Scuba Diving-Padi.

The journey began with 2 dives off the Busselton Jetty in December 2022, a night dive and morning dive. The two participants were accompanied by half the dive section-no pressure!!!

They were calm but excited, cool but with anticipation, the Dive Master Graeme Hindley observing their skills and technique graciously as we all clambered down the length of the Jetty, Rattle and Hum comes to mind- the sounds of all trollies loaded with dive gear trundling along the Jetty. 11 divers were pondering if they had forgotten anything, it was a long run back to the car to retrieve an item! i.e. weight belts, batteries for torches, dive boots and hoods. Thankfully the good old share the spare and the bag of cable ties came into play, everyone had a successful dive.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Dive section End of Year function – River CruiseFremantle up the Swan River and back.

Overseas Dive trip to Nusa Penida and Bali. This was booked and deposited in 2019 pre the hit of COVID restrictions at a Scuba Junkie Resort-Bali. The company have honoured the deposits, which the section members will now enjoy at the end of July, followed by some RNR in Seminyak for a few days.

The two candidates had fun with torches on the night dive, the visibility was good, UV light versus torch light, how many torches can one need!! They had a great dive in near-perfect conditions with the bloodred moon putting on a spectacular show for the journey back across the jetty. The bright sunshine on the following morning allowed the sea floor to reveal her hidden treasures, fishing lures, dropped torches, knives and odds and sods. The new divers were fondly nicknamed “The Sea Scavengers”!!!

30

Their next qualifying dive was in Navigation and Recovery, not everyone’s favourite, this took place at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, on the north side of the groin. This was followed with a dive on the Wreck Trail at Point Peron, where they also were able to demonstrate their Scuba Diving Skills. The conditions were fantastic, lots of fun for all. With the final qualifying dive, a deep dive, to 30mtrs, North of Mindarie Marina.

Great team effort in supporting the candidates to achieve this fantastic lifelong skill.

Congratulation Peter(dad) and Ryan(son) Hawker, welcome board!

Past Events (last month)

The last two months have been very quiet due to adverse weather conditions for diving, some short shallow dives were had by a few brave enough or with plenty of time on their hands.

Season Summary

Hey Everyone,

The Social Section has been busy over the last couple of months in regard to Club events. We had Linda and Rob selling meat raffle tickets on 23 April, congrats to all the lucky winners!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Saturday 22 July Quiz Night – Bogan Bingo

Saturday 29 July The Chain

Saturday 26 August Cancer Council High Tea

Saturday 2 September 1970s Party

Sunday 3 September Fathers Day

We also had volunteers at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service on 25 April. A HUGE thank you to our BBQ Kings, Silvio Delfino, Paul Thompson and David ‘Scruffy’ Lockhart who helped the RSL Volunteers and Paula cook up bacon and egg rolls for everybody who attended the service. It was a huge effort starting at 4:30am. Not only did the boys help cook, but they also stood in the rain until 9am to help serve them to all those who attended. Just when I thought they were done, they cooked up a lunchtime sausage sizzle for everyone who hung around to play some 2up.

Sheila (who is also our Club’s Secretary) ran her Quiz Night on 3 May straight after Jag the Joker and Chase the Ace draw down in the Hall. The winners of the May quiz were ‘Clueless’ who often dominate the Quiz Nights run by Sheila. The winners received $50 on their member card.

I’d also like to do a quick shout-out to one of our Club Members, Tarryn Richardson who owns the florist company ‘Sonny & Willow’ for kindly donating a dried floral arrangement along with some goodies as a door prize for the Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday, 14 May, that was a lovely surprise for our attendees. You can shop the beautiful Sonny & Willow

32

collection via www.sonnyandwillow.com. Tarryn also offers delivery across the metro area.

As always, I’d like to thank our amazing Social Committee who generously donate their time so we can all have a great day and to all our members and guests who always show the utmost respect for our volunteers.

Upcoming Events

The next Social Section event will be Bogan Bingo, on Saturday 22 July. This is the event I am most excited about. We get to dress up in our best flanno’s, trackies and ugg boots, the perfect event to see us through the winter months! There will be prizes for best dressed as well as several other games played throughout the night. Not to mention Bogan Bingo is known for its comedy and great Australian soundtrack! We’ll also have plenty of prizes up for grabs – inspired by the Bogan lifestyle!

Sheila’s next Quiz Night is on Wednesday 5 July, starting at 7pm in the Club Hall. Grab a table between 2 to 6 people. Be sure to get down early to secure a spot!

Following Bogan Bingo, we’ll be headed ‘Back to the Races’ for Spring Carnival, we don’t have a date for you yet, but we hope to provide one on the Social board in the main bar soon so you can start planning your outfits. Spring Carnival is extremely popular and is the perfect excuse to get all dressed up in your best suit or dress and fascinator! Also a good warm-up for the Club’s Melbourne Cup Day!

UPCOMING EVENTS (CLUB)

The next Club event is the 7-piece tribute band ‘The Chain’ performing hits from Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles on Saturday, 29 July from 7pm onwards.

Past Events (last month)

Drew from the Angling Section recently held a Clay Shooting Day out at Wanneroo Shooting Complex and it was amazing! A few of us Social Members were lucky enough to attend and have a go. Maree Ellis was the winner for the Ladies and Callum Williams for the men’s and overall champion for the day, with David ‘Scruffy’ Lockhart coming in 2nd and Paul Thompson 3rd. We all very much hope this will be an annual event as it really was such a great day (No pressure Drew!).

As you know it’s also the 50th Year Anniversary for the Club this year and the Committee and Club Management have been busy coming up with some ideas on how to celebrate in style, including 50th Year Anniversary memorabilia which you may have seen being sold at the Club in recent weeks, or picked up in prize packs from the Quiz Nights. Over the next few weeks, the Club will start rolling out special events to commemorate the occasion, starting with the Commodores Ball being held on 15 July.

Social Report (continued)

Social Section recently held a Quiz Night, hosted by the Quizmasters at Bamboozled. There were definitely a few questions that had us stumped and scratching our heads for a while, if you missed out, here are a few questions to mull over…

• How many stars make up the Alpha Centauri Star System?

- (a) 3000, (b) 300, (c) 30 or (d) 3

• What did John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris pull off in 1962?

• ‘Pike’ and ‘Tuck’ and terms associated with which water sport?

• Which country in the world has all 5 vowels that only occur once?

We also had a round with Club related questions, which I am sure everyone got a 10/10 right?!

‘Clueless’ who won the May Quiz run by Sheila picked up 3 of our 4 prizes, huge congratulations to them. They won the solo game of Heads or Tails, the Group game where we had to build the highest tower only using the items we bought, such as shoes, coats, handbags, pint glasses etc which was really tough, and they also took out first prize overall for the quiz night with most questions right.

A special thank you to WineCow for donating the wine that went into all the prize packs. WineCow are located on Selby Street, Wembley, or you can shop their stock online at www.winecow.com.au and have it delivered to your door.
