INTRODUCTION

“A

community dedicated to student success.”

The Maricopa Unified School District is conducting an Educational/Facilities Utilization and Sustainability Report in order to assist the Governing board and Superintendent in developing a plan over the next several years. This plan will look into the existing facilities, determine how well they suite the needs of the school, and help to clarify the district’s educational, facility, and financial resources needed to realize the goals of its strategic plan; helping to shape students into the Portrait of a Graduate.

OVERVIEW

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

DRAFT

The Maricopa Unified School District collaborated with Orcutt | Winslow to carry out visioning and community engagement initiatives, which provided a thorough assessment of the current facilities, educational programs, and sustainability practices. This effort aimed to create a multifaceted plan to enhance future educational opportunities at their existing schools. Each school offers a specialized academy or program centered on key subject areas.

Orcutt | Winslow established an engagement framework consisting of a three-step process to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs from the perspectives of students, parents, and staff. This evaluation aimed to identify opportunities for enhancing program implementation. This report details the steps taken, presents the raw data collected, and analyzes potential work scopes for each campus.

The initial step involved a visioning session with students, parents, teachers, and staff to assess the current state of the facilities and their adequacy for supporting the educational models at each school. This exercise also helped outline programmatic elements that have evolved in response to the changing future demands and skill requirements as students progress from elementary school onward.

The second step included deeper engagement through sessions aimed at analyzing potential spaces. It focused on identifying areas within each school that need renovation or refurbishment to better support ongoing programs.

The third step consisted of a site visit to evaluate the current condition of the facilities and determine the extent of the necessary renovations.

OVERVIEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DESIGN

Today's and tomorrow's educational settings are vastly different from the traditional schoolhouse model. Schools must adapt to significant societal shifts and implement a curriculum that prepares students for the current and future demands of the workforce.

Here are six critical considerations that were extensively discussed with the community. Reflecting on these ideas has sparked deep discussions about the future requirements of your school district.

01

High Performance Design

High-performance facilities meet the fundamental and psychological needs of students—including thermal comfort, safety, and social relationships—enabling them to achieve their full potential. Such buildings allow staff to concentrate on nurturing the whole child, encompassing mental health, cognitive growth, socialemotional development, identity formation, and physical health, alongside academic progress.

04

Curriculum & Pedagogy

Modern curricula have transitioned from merely disseminating content to developing skills. Although content remains valuable, the ease of accessing information has shifted the emphasis towards skills like critical thinking, complex problem solving, decision making, active listening, leadership, and time management. Additionally, the methods teachers use to deliver content have evolved to include pedagogies such as design or project-based learning.

DRAFT

02

Learner-Centric Design

Learner-centric design prioritizes the student over operational efficiencies, placing them at the core of the facility's organization and operations. This approach is centered on what is best for the learner and what enhances the impact of learning. It may involve flexible schedules and adaptable spaces to suit various student groupings and activities.

03

High Performance Design

Beyond physical education and wellness, it's crucial for students to feel safe and secure in their learning environments. Additionally, they need to cultivate social and emotional skills, including selfregulation, stress management, empathy, and mindfulness.

05

Student Engagement

Modern facilities emphasize cognitive, agentic, and relational engagement. Cognitive engagement involves rigor and stimulation. Agentic engagement centers on self-direction, sparking curiosity, high-level questioning, self-paced learning, and resilience. Relational engagement concentrates on trust, empathy, belonging, and psychological safety.

06

Professional Development

As teaching methods and content evolve, professional development becomes essential in equipping teachers with the skills they need for modern education. Key subjects include integrating technology, project-based learning, understanding child and adolescent development, fostering collaboration and mentorship, recognizing various learning types and styles, and exploring effective content delivery methods.
