Case Study: Yorkshire Water

Fleet analysis by The Algorithm People is helping Yorkshire Water make data-based decisions on its strategy to decarbonise its fleet.

Yorkshire Water is committed to achieve net zero carbon by 2030 It is developing a 10-year plan to decarbonise its 1,400-vehicle fleet, including introducing electric vehicles and piloting the use of CNG and hydrogen power In order to identify the most appropriate next steps in its strategy, the water company turned to EV fleet analysis specialists The Algorithm People for assistance.

The Algorithm People analysed journey data from a sample of 100 vans in Yorkshire Water’s fleet. Drivers take the vehicles home after their shifts, so the analysis was based on recharging the EVs overnight. Based on the real-world range of electric vans, 88 per cent of all vehicles in the sample were suitable for electrification Furthermore, 95 per cent of all daily routes could be achieved without the need for a topup charge.

Electric vehicles benefit from advanced topography-aware algorithms that account for elevation changes during a journey and our algorithms do just that. Our algorithms can optimise energy consumption by identifying uphill and downhill routes, allowing the vehicle to adjust power usage accordingly. When driving uphill, the EV may consume more energy, but regenerative braking downhill can help recharge the battery Additionally, the system may route around hilly areas to preserve battery life, maximising the vehicle's range This feature enhances efficiency, reduces range anxiety, and ensures a smoother, more energy-conscious driving experience.

Mixed Fleets:
