THE HISTORY OF AI

Welcome to Issue 14 of The Optimize Edit!

To kickstart the year 2025, we’re diving into the fascinating history of AI, helping you explore where it all began and how far it has come. First, let’s answer the big question: What is AI? Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is a branch of computer science focused on creating systems that can mimic human intelligence and problem-solving abilities. But the roots of AI stretch back much further than you might expect. Ancient philosophers pondered questions of life, intelligence, and the nature of thought, laying the groundwork for ideas that evolved over centuries. In 1495, Leonardo da Vinci designed one of the earliest “automatons,” a mechanical knight, showcasing humanity’s early fascination with creating lifelike machines While these early efforts are far from the AI we know today, they set the stage for the remarkable developments that followed. Stay tuned as we uncover more about this incredible journey through history!

THE HISTORY OF AI

Fast forward to the early 1900s, and the concept of artificial humans began to captivate the imagination of inventors and storytellers alike. This period saw a surge in media exploring the idea of lifelike machines, with inventors in Japan and Russia creating early prototypes of what we now call robots. However, it wasn’t until the 1950s that AI truly began to take shape as a field of study. Alan Turing, a visionary mathematician, published his groundbreaking paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence,” introducing what we now know as The Turing Test a method for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from that of a human. This marked a pivotal moment in AI’s evolution, setting the foundation for the innovations we continue to build upon today

Jumping ahead to the 1970s and 80s, AI saw significant growth and began to solidify as a recognised field of study, with the actual term “Artificial Intelligence” gaining traction. During the 1970s, the U.S. government conducted research into AI but showed limited interest in providing long-term funding, which temporarily slowed progress. However, the 1980s ushered in the “AI Boom,” a period of rapid advancement fuelled by breakthroughs in research and a surge of government and corporate investment. Expert systems computer programs designed to mimic human decision-making were a hallmark of this era, demonstrating AI’s potential for real-world applications and sparking widespread excitement about its future possibilities.

The late 1980s and early 1990s brought about the “AI Winter,” a period marked by diminished consumer, public, and private interest in AI due to unmet expectations and funding challenges However, by the late 1990s and early 2000s, the tide began to turn as AI achieved significant milestones. One standout moment was the development of an AI system capable of defeating a reigning world champion chess player IBM’s Deep Blue beating Garry Kasparov in 1997. During this time, there was also a surge in everyday AI tools, including the rise of virtual assistants and improved search engines, which brought AI into more practical, consumer-facing applications. Pop culture reflected these advancements, with the release of Bicentennial Man in 2000 exploring humanity’s evolving relationship with AI and showcasing the growing imagination surrounding the field.

Turning the page to today, it’s remarkable to see how these ideas from the past have truly come to life. Robots are now being developed and used across the globe, while AI has seamlessly integrated into our everyday lives from powering search engines to assisting in the creation of this very newsletter The history of AI has undeniably shaped the intelligent systems we rely on today, highlighting the incredible contributions of past innovations. As we stand on the cusp of even greater advancements, it’s exciting to imagine how AI will continue to evolve and transform the way we live, work, and connect in the future.
