more efficient and effective way. Our way.

So with this in mind, why not work together on ideas to improve the standard of living on a global scale?

The time is now. We invite you to seize this historical moment with us.

PAGE 04 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

AREN’T THESE GLOBAL ISSUES VERY COMPLEX?

We are not claiming to have the all-encompassing answer that solves these issues. What we do know is that there are people all over the world with innovative perspectives and clever solutions, people who want to be a part of this new global conversation; people who want to make positive changes in their – and our – lives. They don’t always have the means to do so, but they do hold world-changing ideas. Ideas that need other people.

That is where we come in. With a perfect match between technology and global minds, we can create innovative solutions to improve the lives of millions of people worldwide.

PAGE 06 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

1%CLUB IS THE ONLINE PLATFORM THAT CONNECTS PEOPLE WHO HAVE SMART IDEAS WITH PEOPLE, MONEY AND KNOWLEDGE AROUND THE WORLD.

We are talking about sustainable projects that stimulate the self-reliance of individuals anywhere in the world and improve their standard of living. To achieve this, we need three things: a little bit of your knowledge, money, or time. You choose how, when, and to what extent you want to participate. The people that run the projects that you are involved in keep you informed on their progress.

It is that simple.

RESULTS

Someone sees an opportunity to improve his or her community’s livelihood.

The 1%COACH, and the crowd help to turn the smart idea into a great plan.

The project is fully funded, the resources are available and the people involved are ready to kick off. The project starts.

The project is finished.

The opportunity turns into an idea in one of the innovation labs, during a co-creation session, by meeting each other during a 1%EVENT or just by sharing thoughts online.

During a co-creation session experts solve specific bottlenecks of the plan. Micro-tasks are defined and published online, where the 1%CROWD is asked to help finalize the plan.

The project owner keeps providing regular updates about the project so that the crowd can give useful feedback.

The crowd and some experts are invited to give feedback on the idea.

The smart idea is now a 1%CLUB project.

If necessary the project owner defines micro tasks for certain expertise or skills needed for the execution of the project.

A 1%COACH checks the idea one more time, the idea is now ready for take off.

The project is open for crowdfunding. The project owner starts promoting the project through the 1%CLUB community, social media and local networks. The attention around the project grows exponentially. Time, money and knowledge are crowdsourced through 1%CLUB.

In co-creation sessions experts tackle the challenges found during the implementation phase by the project initiators.

The project owner evaluates the project and shares the story online through 1%CLUB, Twitter, Facebook and other networks. The project owner shows the impact and results of the project on the community and shares the lessons learnt. The 1%CROWD and 1%EXPERTS are invited to give feedback on the results. The project owner learns from the experience. Based on the results, evaluation and feedback, other project initiators could also learn from these experiences for their future project.

WHERE ONLINE MEETS OFFLINE INNOVATION AND INCUBATION LABS 1%CLUB is supporting Innovation and Incubation LABS in the largest hubs in emerging countries. Too often, young innovators, designers and researchers labor in isolation. They often lack business skills, the infrastructure and the resources to upscale their innovative ideas. The LABS offer an inspiring and professional working space to connect them with other people, the money they need and relevant knowledge from around the world.

We already organized Co-Creation sessions with Accenture and Ordina and young professionals from a number of companies like Google, KPN, BP, Barclays, Albert Heijn, ABN AMRO, Versatel, RTL, Rabobank, Ahrend, ANWB, KEMA, NestlĂŠ, Rijkswaterstaat, Hyves and Oxfam Novib.

1%EVENT

So far we supported the foundation of NaiLab in Nairobi (Kenya) and we are working closely together with ActiveSpaces (Cameroon) and RLabs (South Africa). 1%CLUB is the co-founder of AfriLabs, a network of Innovation and Incubation Labs in Africa (Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, Senegal and South Africa).

1%EVENT is a yearly Open Space event that brings together innovators, young professionals, entrepreneurs and change-makers that invest one day of their time, expertise, experience, talent, network and energy to work on new innovative approaches to international cooperation. In 2011 the largest global co-creation event took place during the 1%EVENT in Amsterdam and Nairobi in cooperation with LABS in the following cities: Buea, Cape Town, Kampala, London, Ramallah and Cairo. In 2012 Khartoum, Tunis, Jakarta en Somaliland were added.

CO-CREATION SESSIONS

1%SKILLS

Since we do not have all the answers ourselves, we like to organize Co-Creation Sessions. Co-Creation is an open innovation methodology that brings together young professionals from organizations and companies from different sectors. For one day they work together in multi-disciplinary groups to devise a creative solution for a business case brought in by a project owner from the 1%CLUB website.

With our 1%SKILLS program we offer our 1%COMMUNITY the opportunity to match their talents, expertise and skills with the needs of 1%PROJECTS. We have already trained over 100 people to be 1%COACH. 1%COACHES inspire and support project owners to make their project work. Often, this is done by helping out with their business plan, developing a strategy to mobilize their online network and in the end, by evaluating how it went, together. We also have trained 1%EXPERTS, 1%SOCIAL MEDIA BUDDIES and 1%DIGITAL STORYTELLERS.

PAGE 16 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TRUE COOPERATION.

1%CLUB offers a radically new approach to international cooperation. We do not believe in ONE BIG PLAN. By the time the PLAN is developed, let alone executed, the world will have changed again. It’s not about the plan. It’s about people. It’s about many different collaborative plans. Together, it makes for big changes. Big changes come from smart ideas. Smart ideas can come from anyone and everywhere. 1%CLUB is all about people who want to get involved. We cooperate and participate rather than give or receive aid. We think big and act small. The results are extraordinary. Our generation likes to be involved. “Trust me,” “Tell me,” and “Show me” are not enough. This is the “Involve me” generation.

Join the generation of change.

PAGE 18 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE LOVE SMART IDEAS.

A social entrepreneur in Kenya developed an idea to cut plastics from discarded plastics such as bottles and other plastic containers. His organization trains its members about local waste management projects (cutting plastic waste and reselling it) for the people of Githurai. The cut plastic is sold to factories that make new products such as bins and water bottles. 1%CLUB’s social media team in Kenya initiated an online campaign via Facebook, Twitter, and Mpesa (mobile donations) to raise 1000 euro. It took 8 hours. The money was used to build the first plastic--cutting machine. Not only did this project create jobs and thus income, but any profit is used for environmental education and awareness. Two Dutch researchers decided to help a grassroots organization in Uganda with the structure of a bicycle micro-financing plan named Cycling Out of Poverty. The project’s goal is to encourage the independence of local women. Because of the project’s on-going sustainability, the Ugandan organization decided to put it to use in other countries. Different versions of the project were realized in Ghana (for women) and Rwanda (to support students, small entrepreneurs, and hospital workers). Through this process, they completed five 1%CLUB projects, raising almost 8000 euro.

ideas that stimulate the self-reliance of individuals anywhere in the world, ideas on how communities can meet their basic needs; ideas on how to cope with worldwide issues like global warming, the financial crisis, and impending food and water shortages; ideas for international cooperation. These people want to improve their lives but do not always have the means to execute their ideas. At the same time, there are people who want to do something but do not know where or how to get started. What these people share is a positive mindset and a fresh perspective, seeing challenges instead of problems. Instead of waiting for a solution, they find one themselves. We call them the “cheetahs” of this world.

1%CLUB lets these eager cheetahs work together on a global scale, unhindered or slowed down by imposed regulations and red tape. We connect them and give them

Ghanaian economist George Ayittey’s vision on Africa is one of a “Fight between Hippos -- complacent, greedy bureaucrats wallowing in the muck -- and Cheetahs, the fast-moving, entrepreneurial leaders and citizens who will rebuild Africa”.

PAGE 22 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE COLLABORATIVE JOIN THE CROWD. SOURCE YOUR NEEDS FROM THE BEST.

We are not an institution, nor are we a big organization. 1%CLUB is a movement that believes in massive collaboration. By pooling skills, abilities, and knowledge, we can collectively create the best, long-lasting solutions. A great example of this is when two women from The Ghana Foundation and BeeSupport joined forces after meeting on 1%CLUB. Both women train beekeepers. They now work together in a number of ways, exchanging ideas and even making music together to collect money for their projects. The concept of a global collaboration comes with centuries of evolution. However, values that structure crowdsourcing are perfectly intuitive. Eddy in Uganda was looking for a logo for a new start-up. He posted this question on 1%SKILLS, and 1%CLUB reposted and spread it through Twitter. Within a few hours, Michel from the Netherlands replied. Within two days, the logo was ready for use. We know that finding the right solution is an organic process that should not be limited by bureaucratic rules and procedures. We are passionate about our projects and are willing to take risks to reach our goals. All 1%MEMBERS share the workload and create micro-tasks for otherwise overwhelming operations.

PAGE 24 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

“A starfish, is a neural network. You cannot cut off the head of a starfish. If you cut a starfish in half, you will end up with two starfish. The starfish is the model of an open system.” The Starfish and the Spider (Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom, 2006)

“This generation collaborates, shares, remixes, and creates with a fluency and ease the rest of us can hardly understand. Crowdsourcing, just now starting to emerge, will in a short time simply be the way things are done.” Crowdsourcing. (Jeff Howe, 2008)

PAGE 26 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE ONE. ME, YOU AND EVERYONE WE KNOW.

Right now, we live in an era where, for the first time in history, “anywhere” and “everyone” are always within reach. How can we find the right people or distinguish the concepts that are going to change the world for the better? We believe that the chances are small that the expertise of one person, whether a professional or an amateur, is sufficient to solve global challenges. Social issues are complex. They require the knowledge of several people and many resources. The inclination of an open system is not that everybody suddenly becomes an expert or provides us with the perfect solution. The implication is that by including everybody, the chances of finding the best solution become much, much greater.

This is the essence of 1%CLUB. No one is the ultimate expert, but collectively, we are genius.

PAGE 28 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

We believe in the wisdom of the crowd.

PAGE 30 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

The crowd is more than wise – it’s talented, creative, and stunningly productive. Crowdsourcing activates the transformative power of today’s technology, liberating the latent potential within us all. It’s a perfect meritocracy, where age, gender, race, education, and job history no longer matter, the quality of work is all that counts, and every field is open to people of every imaginable background. If you can perform the service, design the product, or solve the problem, you’ve got the job. Crowdsourcing. (Jeff Howe, 2008)

PAGE 32 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE CONNECTED. ALWAYS, ANYWHERE AND WITH EVERYONE. A GLOBAL COMMUNITY.

Today’s technologies provide a platform that allows us to create magic. For the first time in history, we are able to communicate with people all over the world. 1%CLUB uses this for the greater good on a global scale. Moses, a young guy from Kenya, wanted to set up an organization that coaches and counsels youngsters on how to deal with epilepsy. After finding out about 1%CLUB, he published his project online. He then joined one of the social media and digital storytelling workshops offered by 1%CLUB in Nairobi. This made Moses so enthusiastic that he realized two projects on the platform by mobilizing his network using Facebook. The internet has broken through the traditional, dominant communication structure in which there was just one sender and many recipients. On the internet, everyone is a sender and a receiver simultaneously. The internet is not a mass medium, but a medium of the masses. Anyone can create his or her own unique online world. Humans are complex creatures, but however bizarre your hobby may be, through the world wide web, you will always find that one like-minded person who may share your passion for collecting Tosakin goldfish.

PAGE 40 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE OPEN. ISN’T TRUST AND UNDERSTANDING THE MEANS OF A GREAT RELATIONSHIP?

We like to share everything we have. This includes all knowledge and data in our possession. Make use of the data you have. Gather the feedback. Harvest the accountability. Share the data with those who can use it. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web nearly 20 years ago. Now, he is building a web for open, linked data that could do for numbers what the Web did for words, pictures, and video: unlock our data and reframe the way we use it for the better. Inspired by Tim Berners-Lee, we want to know what is out there. That’s why we are one of the initiators of Open for Change, the International Network for Transparency, Collaboration, and Impact in Development. The idea for Open for Change started at the 1%EVENT in Amsterdam in 2009. In 2011, Open for Change brought together a diverse crowd of development workers, policy-makers, researchers, journalists, techies, and software developers in the Open Data for Development Camp. Everyone shared their experiences about the possibilities for Open Data in Development.

PAGE 42 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

We believe that open development data should be a core component of a paradigm shift towards increased transparency, accountability, and public participation in international cooperation. We would like to know which solar energy systems actually work, which medicine is most needed and where? This information should be much easier to find as well as to share. 1%CLUB allows open feedback on all 1%PROJECTS. Moreover, we make project data accessible for all who have an interest in the topic or the region. The 1%CLUB wants international cooperation to be more connected and efficient. Through open sharing and the linking of data and knowledge via the Web, we discover new and better solutions, empower people, and anticipate and react toward change. All knowledge and information about available resources must be readily available – for everybody.

“The vision I have for the Web is about anything being potentially connected with anything. It is a vision that provides us with new freedom, and allows us to grow faster than we ever could when we were fettered by the hierarchical classification systems into which we bound ourselves.” Weaving the Web (Tim Berners-Lee, 2000)

PAGE 46 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE STRAIGHTFORWARD. FAIL BETTER AND LEARN RAPIDLY. WE DARE TO BE DIFFERENT!

The road towards a proven concept is long. Traditionally, it takes decades for good ideas to become common practice. Our approach is to invest in multiple promising solutions and use the niche system to filter out the best. We work with an open mind and forget about generalizations and assumptions. What did not work in Malaysia may work in Mali. Business models are created, broken, altered, and reborn at dizzying pace. And its social impact is overwhelming.Â

PAGE 48 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

We believe that honesty, trust and common sense form the foundation for long and lasting success. When 1%PROJECT Cycling Out of Poverty evaluated their first project, they found that not everything went according to plan. No one could find spare parts to fix the second-hand bikes from England in Uganda. 10% of the people did not pay back their loans. 55% of the bikes were subsidized; therefore, the first 90 fully paid bikes only covered 45 new ones. The project organizers shared these mistakes, learnt their lessons, and improved their strategy. When they put their enriched project online, the crowd appreciated their honesty and openness and supported their new project immediately. We encourage social entrepreneurs to try something different, to develop new ideas, and to turn those ideas into reality. Of course, not everything always goes exactly as planned, but the most important thing is to be honest and open about everything. This way, you can face troubles together and get a clear grasp of what works and what doesn’t. Showing where things go wrong the first time will eliminate future problems. This speeds the whole process up ten-fold, which is the only way a platform like 1%CLUB can exist. Our philosophy works. At the same time, we are open to new suggestions that will make it stronger.

“Trust is the one thing that can build or destroy every human relationship. When trust goes up, speed will also go up and cost will go down. The inverse is also true. When trust goes down, speed will go down and costs will go up.” The Speed of Trust (Stephen M.R. Covey, 2006)

PAGE 50 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE MOVING. WE ARE SEARCHERS. EVERY DAY WE LEARN BY DOING.

Poverty is a twisted web of political, historical, institutional, and technical factors. We don’t claim to have the answer to everything; however, complicated concerns do come with a personal, specific solution. In the Mukono district of Uganda, there are many orphans who lost their parents to HIV AIDS. There’s also several families that want to adopt an orphan but lack the income to provide for the child. Duko and Fred came up with a solution. Yoghurt is a very popular product in Uganda and is much easier to preserve compared to milk in tropical climates. By supplying a Frisian cow to families that wished to adopt a child, an income was created through sales of milk to yoghurt factories. The yoghurt factory sells the yoghurt to local shops. Income is also spread to others by passing the cow’s firstborn onto another family. All situations are unique. Which is why, through collective thoughts and ideas, we can always create unique solutions. In rural Tanzania, the vast majority of people have no connection to the electricity grid. Therefore, a solution was devised where small-scale wind turbines would provide people with sustainable energy. Made from local

PAGE 52 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

materials, the turbines are small investments, compared to generators running on expensive, polluting gasoline. The fact that the production of these wind turbines requires a lot of work is even an advantage, as this creates many jobs – like electrical, timber cutting, and trade work – for the Tanzanians. We’re finding answers by experimenting and trying new things. Every day, we learn by doing. Cycling out of Poverty expanded its project to many different countries in Africa. For each target group, new bicycle designs were introduced, from tricycles for entrepreneurs to bicycle ambulances for hospital workers. This way of international cooperation works. Meanwhile, our world is changing incredibly fast, so it would be naive to think that we shouldn’t change too. We are always looking for things that work and accept responsibility for our actions. Instead of surveying the world from the top, we are connecting from the bottom – and on a global scale. We are the first to know when something works and when it does not.

“Two key elements that make searches work, and whose absence is fatal to plans, are feedback and accountability. Searchers know if something works only if the people at the bottom can give feedback. This is why successful Searchers have to be close to the customers at the bottom, rather than surveying the world from the top.” The White Man’s Burden (William Easterly, 2006)

PAGE 56 THE LITTLE GREEN & PINK BOOK

WE ARE POSITIVE. AS WE ALL KNOW, ENTHUSIASM IS CONTAGIOUS.

We are pragmatic idealists. We see possibilities instead of problems. To mobilize tens of thousands of people worldwide, we believe you should share this positive worldview. With a positive state of mind, you can achieve all your desired goals. Professional boxer Innocent Anyanwu fled Nigeria at the age of 16 in search of a better future. Today, Innocent calls The Netherlands home. Because he believes in a better future for all the people in Ekwerazu, Nigeria, Innocent set up a foundation to help discover what the people of his homeland needed. With the area in need of a medical center, Innocent turned to the members of 1%CLUB for help. Now he works with a 1%COACH to realize his dreams for Nigeria. The people involved call him once a week with updates on the construction of the center, and the projects are financed with money he earns through boxing games and presentations. Besides working with a 1%COACH, Innocent works with various 1%CLUB volunteers who help him with his budgets and construction questions with regard to the medial center he wants to build. We believe in the power of yes!

YOU MAKE IT WORK. LIVE, LEARN, AND INSPIRE.

1%CLUB is more than the sum of all our members. People are the center of 1%CLUB. Whether we call you cheetahs, change agents, or catalysts – we think you are special. You listen to others. You inspire all. You co-create rather than take control. You initiate ideas in informal environments and use social networks to find others. There is no one leader, yet everyone leads each other.

The leader is YOU. We invest in systems that encourage people to engage, to listen to each other, to experience working with people in developing countries rather than simply explore them. Like Edwin and Sarah, who were planning a backpacking trip through Asia. Besides enjoying beautiful sceneries, culture, and cocktails on the beach, they wanted to contribute something somewhere. They put their request on 1%CLUB, and a few months later, they were helping to build a classroom for a library project in Nepal.
