ABSTRACT: Diabetes mellitus has become one of the main health problems in the population around the world in the last few years, not only because of the risk factors predisposing to the disease, but also because of the health problems associated to it; becoming a challenge for the health system in our country due to the economic burden derived of the diabetic patient health care. Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, different physiological parameters must be monitored on these patients either during the antiglycemic or insulin replacement therapies. In this context, it is necessary to control the glucose levels in diabetic patients; therefore, in the last few years new technologies based on engineering and nanotechnology have been designed to monitor in an easy a fast way not only the glucose levels in diabetic patients but also some other biomolecules involved in glucose metabolism, contributing importantly to the diagnosis and control of the diabetes. Therefore, in this work we will review the features of some devices currently used to monitor and control glucose levels, mentioning some advantages and disadvantages of them. The role played by the health care staff facing these new technologies used to follow the diabetic patient is also addressed. Keywords: Mellitus diabetes; POTC devices; glucose; monitory; diagnostic.
