LOOK, THERE’S NO BAD TIME TO BE IN BEND, BUT THE END OF SUMMER AND BEGINNING OF FALL IS AWFULLY TOUGH TO BEAT.

At the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, some of the most anticipated shows of the year are this September, including Lindsey Stirling, The Lumineers, Jelly Roll, and Counting Crows.

Outside of the Old Mill District, the Bend Roots Revival takes over the Box Factory September 15-17, Oregon Spirts hosts the Oregon Whiskey Festival September 22-23, and the Sisters Folk Festival, one of our favorite festivals in all of Central Oregon, rocks and rolls September 29 through October 1.

Also in October, the BendFilm Festival, Bend Design Conference, and Bend Venture Conference take center stage, showing that Central Oregon’s much more than just beers, bikes, and beers after riding bikes.

Now that being said, autumn is prime bike riding time in the High Desert. Check out our feature on bikepacking on page 52, or swing by REI for tips on the best places to ride mountain bikes this time of year.

More of a water person? Be sure to check out the Witch’s Paddle down the Deschutes River around Halloween. Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe also offer year-round kayak, canoe and standup paddleboard rentals, which is an amazing way to appreciate the colors and foliage of Central Oregon as the leaves change.

Have fun during this fantastic changing of the sseason!

LIVE MUSIC OUTDOORS OFF-THE-CHARTS FUN

OFF-THE-CHARTS FUN MAY SOUND LIKE AN EXAGGERATION, BUT THOSE WHO GOT TO BOOGIE WITH BECK AND PHOENIX ON THEIR MAGICAL ODYSSEY OR LAUGH WITH JAMES TAYLOR WHO WAS ENJOYING HIS SET SO MUCH HE QUESTIONED THE PURPOSE OF AN INTERMISSION, BEG TO DIFFER. So far this season we have witnessed the frenzied admiration of boygenius fans, reunited with the electric soul of Trombone Shorty and belted out “This Tornado Loves You” with Neko Case as the sun tucked itself behind the Cascades. No, we’re not trying to give you FOMO, this is a reminder that there is still time to come down and catch a show!

From the heart pumping electronic violin anthems of Lindsey Stirling and heavy-hitting 80s hits with Rick Springfield, to kids pop phenoms KIDZ BOP, Jelly Roll’s southern country swagger and quasi-nostalgic alternative rocker Counting Crows – this fall’s lineup is expansive and stellar. Pair that with free parking, VIP seat options, and an innovative lineup of Central Oregon’s top food carts like Masa Empanada, Fresco and Fryed, and ZydeGO accentuated with some of Bend’s best craft beer, cocktails and wine on hand, and you’ve got your recipe for offthe-charts fun.

The locally owned Hayden Homes Amphitheater has been bringing world-class music to Bend since 2002. The amphitheater is Oregon’s largest outdoor venue accommodating up to 8,000 concertgoers on a grassy infield -- a spectacular space to come together in community in support of live music and top-notch musicians. Our local crew of more than 600 seasonal employees share this sentiment, and we’re grateful for their help in creating musical moments and memories that last a lifetime as well as the opportunity to see inspirational icons like the ones above.

The circumstances surrounding the creation of The Lumineers’ fourth album, “BRIGHTSIDE” were unlike anything Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites had previously experienced in their nearly two decades of making music together. They were five months into a projected two-year tour behind their 2019 album, “III,” with no plans to start work on another LP, when the pandemic forced them off the road in March 2020. That gut punch occurred as Fraites was preparing to relocate from Denver to his wife’s hometown in Italy, where COVID-19 was running rampant. Suddenly, everything was up in the air. But finding themselves with time on their hands, they figured they might as well make use of it. Each wound up recording a solo album—“accidentally,” Schultz jokes—and those spontaneous side trips inspired them to flip the script on their collaborative creative process.

Jason DeFord, better known by his stage name Jelly Roll, is a southern singer-songwriter who, lately, has been leaning into his Tennessean roots. Jelly Roll's musical style is a paring of deeply personal lyrics blended with old-school rap, classic rock, country and soul. The result is a musical experience that is therapeutic, raw, and honestly acknowledges heavy topics from his life. Tales of a man who has been through the wringer and isn’t afraid to share his truth, as witnessed on chart-topping singles “Save Me,” “Son of a Sinner,” and “NEED A FAVOR,” among others!

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

Doors open at 5 p.m. Show starts at 6:30 p.m. General Admission and Reserved Seating Options.

For more than two decades, the Grammy and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock and roll. DRIVING SUSTAINABILITY ONE NOTE AT A TIME

2.5 TONS WOOD

THE HAYDEN HOMES AMPHITHEATER IS HAILED AS AN INDUSTRY LEADER IN SUSTAINABILITY FOR ITS TAKE NOTE INITIATIVE. Our local Green Team works diligently to reduce our environmental impact in various ways including the use of a water fill station for reusable water bottles, compostable cups and utensils, cashless points of payment, separate receptacles for recycling, compost and trash as well as multiple bike racks. Additional greening efforts this year include 150 new bike racks near the venue, courtesy of Visit Central Oregon and the Hayden Homes Amphitheater’s official sustainably partner, OnPoint Community Credit Union.

“As the world’s leader in live entertainment, we have a responsibility to preserve the live music experience for generations to come and an opportunity to use our platform to inspire global environmental action,” said Cassidy Cushing, the amphitheater’s Director of Sustainability. “Our staff pulls anything and everything out of the waste bins to be sorted and sent to the proper waste or recycle stream. In 2022 that amounted to 4,550 bags sorted and a landfill diversion rate of almost 80 percent.”

New in 2022 was the implementation of a Green Team certification course for those interested in learning more within the industry.

"Each of our staff members are already ambassadors of the HHA Green Team/Take Note Initiative and do a fantastic job of supporting our efforts,” Cushing said. “We want to make sure we recognize and support their efforts, too. This job is messy, informative, grueling yet rewarding, and even comedic at times. You really get to know someone when you are sorting waste with each other!”

The Hayden Homes Amphitheater launched the Take Note Initiative in 2016 and has built upon this industry-leading sustainably effort every concert season. In 2018, the amphitheater was one of only three U.S. venues to receive the Jack Johnson All At Once Sustainability Award.

American composer Jake Heggie’s compelling masterpiece, the most widely performed new opera of the last 20 years, arrives in cinemas in a haunting new production by Ivo van Hove. Based on Sister Helen Prejean’s memoir about her fight for the soul of a condemned murderer, “Dead Man Walking” matches the high drama of its subject with Heggie’s beautiful and poignant music and a brilliant libretto by Tony and Emmy Award–winner Terrence McNally. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin takes the podium, with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato starring as Sister Helen. The outstanding cast also features bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as the death-row inmate Joseph De Rocher, soprano Latonia Moore as Sister Rose, and legendary mezzo-soprano Susan Graham—who sang Helen Prejean in the opera’s 2000 premiere—as De Rocher’s mother.

Restaurants & Bevies

BOXWOOD KITCHEN HOSTS SEASONAL MENU AND PFRIEM TAP TAKEOVER

BOXWOOD KITCHEN HAS BEEN PUTTING A NEW, QUICKER TWIST ON ITS POPULAR MENU THIS SUMMER AND FALL, CATERING TO CONCERTGOERS AND OTHERS WITH JAM-PACKED SCHEDULES.

The Old Mill District restaurant is also partnering with Hood River’s pFriem Family Brewers for a summer-long tap takeover.

“People want to quickly get in and out for drinks and food before the concerts,” said coowner Riane Rud. “We wanted to shift our format to quick service, counter service and changed up the menu to be heavy on small plates and shareables.”

Boxwood Kitchen is located just a short walk across the Deschutes River and the Hayden Homes Amphitheater. Rud said with the number of concerts seemingly growing every year, the restaurant wanted to make it easier for people to get a great meal before enjoying the music.

The all-day seasonal menu includes crowd favorites like the Boxwood Burger with bacon jam and the half rack of Baby Back Ribs alongside some fresh, lighter fare perfect for patio dining - think Grilled Shrimp or a Crispy Thai Salad.

You can wash it all down with a diverse selection of pFriem’s delicious beers including a Czech lager, IPA, Hazy, Pale Ale and Belgian Style Blonde Ale.

Boxwood’s executive chef and co-owner Eric Rud is known for his unique twist on southern comfort food. And his dishes are perfect for an upscale night on the town or for a grab-andgo treat on the way to an adventure in the Cascades.

“This season is really busy for us in the Old Mill District. There’s so much to do,” Riane Rud said. “How do we maximize on the season and not lose sight of the product quality?”

Boxwood Kitchen opens for lunch and dinner service daily at 11 a.m. with a variety of libations available to sip on from craft beer to wine and several specialty cocktails.

VINTAGE FLAIR WITH MODERN TWISTS HIGHLIGHT NEW RESTAURANT

AFTER SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHING IN JANUARY, LADY BIRD CULTURAL SOCIETY, THE OLD MILL DISTRICT'S NEWEST DINING CONCEPT, HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF BEND’S PREMIER DESTINATIONS FOR ELEVATED FOOD EXPERIENCES.

Owners John and Amanda Gurnee have earned praise in Eater, Bend Magazine, The Bulletin, and more for a menu that’s full of “simple, approachable dishes that let the ingredients shine,” according to John.

Guests can savor a distinctive wine or a beautifully crafted prohibition-era style cocktails while tapping their foot to music of a bygone era and reveling in a parade of novelties from Lady Bird’s kitchen.

Located at 375 SW Powerhouse Dr, No. 130, on the north end of the Old Mill District, John and Amanda’s team transformed a former pizza shop into one of Bend’s swankiest spots for a night out on the town.

The Gurnees’ space features show-stopping black and white tile flooring and a private dining room with beautifully flamboyant dancing cranes that appear to almost bounce off the wall.

“We hope that our patrons will enjoy getting dressed up to the nines and make Lady Bird the first or last stop for a night on the town,” John says.

Lady Bird is open for dinner from 4:45 to 9 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Bar and patio seating opens early at noon Friday through Sunday.

Reservations and a seasonal menu can be found at LadyBirdBend.com.

CHAR SIU (CANTONESE BBQ PORK)

YIELD: 6 to 8 servings

COOK TIME: 60 min

Recipe by Michael Kimball, Savory Spice Test Kitchen

INGREDIENTS

• 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed

• 3 Tbsp. Cantonese

BBQ Pork Rub

• 3 Tbsp. honey

• 1 1/2 Tbsp. soy sauce

• 1 1/2 Tbsp. dry white wine

• 1 1/2 Tbsp. rice wine vinegar

• 3/4 tsp. sesame oil

• Red food coloring (optional)

• 2 to 3 lbs. boneless pork shoulder or butt, cut lengthwise into 2-inch thick strips

• Sliced scallions, to garnish

• 1 1/2 cups shredded

cheddar cheese

• 1/2 cup grated

Parmesan cheese

• 1 cup crushed tomatoes

For Topping:

• 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

• 1/4 cup bread crumbs

• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

• 1/4 tsp. Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Marinate pork

In a medium bowl, stir brown sugar, Cantonese BBQ Pork Rub, honey, soy sauce, wine, vinegar, sesame oil, and red food coloring (if using) until combined. Remove and reserve 1/4 cup of marinade in a small bowl. To remaining marinade, add pork strips and turn to coat. Cover and chill pork and reserved marinade for at least 8 hours for best flavor or up to overnight.

Step 2: Roast pork

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Meanwhile, melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning, Rubbed Sage, Mayan Sea Salt, and Coarse Black Malabar Pepper. Whisk in flour until mixture is smooth. Slowly whisk in milk, stirring until mixture has thickened. Add cheddar and Parmesan, and stir until cheeses are melted. Remove from heat and stir in crushed tomatoes. Combine sauce and pasta. Pour into a greased 2-quart casserole dish.

Step 2: Prepare topping and bake

In a small bowl, thoroughly combine melted butter, bread crumbs, Parmesan, and ¼ tsp. Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning. Top pasta with seasoned crumbs and bake until sauce is bubbling and topping is golden brown, about 15 to 20 min.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with foil. Pour 1 1/2 cups water into the pan and place a metal rack on top. Place marinated pork on rack and roast for 20 min. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees, flip pork, rotate pan, and roast for an additional 20 min. Add more water to pan if it dries up to prevent drippings from burning.

Step 3: Baste pork

Remove sheet pan from oven and generously brush pork on one side with reserved marinade. Return to oven for 10 min. then flip pork and brush other side with remaining marinade. Roast for an additional 10 min. until top is lightly caramelized.

Step 4: Serve

Let pork rest for 10 min. before slicing strips crosswise into thin pieces. Garnish with scallions and serve with bao buns, rice, noodles, or stir-fried vegetables. Dice pork to use as a filling for steamed buns or dumplings.

For crust:

• 2 cups crushed graham crackers (10 to 14 crackers)

• 2 Tbsp. granulated sugar

• 1/4 tsp. Mayan Sea Salt

• 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

For filling:

Powder

• 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed

• 1/2 cup granulated sugar

• 2 eggs

• 2 tsp. Tahitian Vanilla Extract

• 6 oz. dark chocolate chips

Melt butter in a small pan over low heat. Increase heat to mediumlow and stir constantly with a rubber spatula until butter is foamy, smells nutty, and turns light brown. Transfer to a bowl and let cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Prepare dough

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a medium bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, French Fleur de Sel Sea Salt, baking soda, and Pure Espresso Powder, and set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together brown butter, dark brown sugar, and granulated sugar for 4 to 5 min., until light and fluffy. Add Tahitian Vanilla Extract, then eggs one at a time, mixing between each addition until just combined. Add reserved flour mixture and mix until just combined. Remove bowl from stand mixer and fold in chocolate chips.

Step 3: Shape and bake

Roll dough into tablespoon-sized balls and set on prepared baking sheet 2-inches apart. Bake for 8 min., sprinkle with a pinch of French Fleur de Sel Sea Salt, then return to oven to bake for another 2 min. or until edges of cookies are golden brown and center is slightly puffy. DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Make crust

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line a 9x13 baking dish with parchment paper and grease well. In a medium bowl, combine crushed graham crackers, sugar, and Mayan Sea Salt. Add melted butter and mix until mixture is consistency of wet sand. Use the bottom of a measuring cup to press graham cracker mixture into bottom of prepared baking dish. Bake for 15 min. until set.

Step 2: Make filling

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together cream cheese and sugar until smooth and creamy. Add sour cream and Tahitian Vanilla Extract and mix until just combined. Add eggs one at a time and mix until just combined. Remove half of mixture to a medium bowl. To the remaining mixture, add pumpkin puree and Pumpkin Pie Spice and mix until combined.

Step 3: Layer and bake

Pour plain cheesecake mixture evenly over par-baked crust. Drop spoonfuls of pumpkin cheesecake mixture over top. Use an offset spatula to spread pumpkin cheesecake mixture over top of plain cheesecake mixture. Use a chopstick or toothpick to swirl cheesecake mixtures together. Bake for 45 min., turning baking dish halfway through to ensure even baking. Edges of cheesecake should be set with a slight wobble in the center when baking dish is moved. Set dish on a wire rack to cool, then refrigerate to chill. Serve cold.

SIESTA KEY TORTILLA ESPAÑOLA

YIELD: 8 servings

COOK TIME: 15 min

Recipe by Miranda Barnett, Savory Spice Test Kitchen

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups extra-virgin olive oil

• 1 to 1 1/2 lbs. Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced into thin half-circles (about 3 medium potatoes)

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Cook vegetables

• 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced

• 2 Tbsp. Siesta Key Spanish Sazon, divided

• 8 e ggs, beaten

In a large cast iron skillet over medium heat, heat oil until shimmering. Add potatoes and onion and spread into an even layer, adjusting heat so that oil is gently bubbling around vegetables but not deep frying. Cook for 30 to 35 min. until vegetables are very tender, stirring occasionally to ensure all pieces are submerged in oil. Carefully strain vegetables out of oil and add to a large bowl, reserving oil. Season vegetables with 1 Tbsp. Siesta Key Spanish Sazon and set aside.

Step 2: Cook tortilla

Return pan to medium-low heat with enough reserved oil to coat the bottom of the pan. In a large bowl, combine eggs, remaining Siesta Key Spanish Sazon, and vegetables. Add to heated pan and swirl around so egg distributes evenly across pan. Cook until edges are fully set and middle is mostly set, about 5 min.

Step 3: Flip tortilla and finish cooking

Remove pan from heat and cover with a large plate or upside down sheet tray. Quickly invert pan so that tortilla transfers to plate or sheet tray. Add a little more oil to pan back on the heat and gently slide tortilla back into pan so the uncooked side is now on the bottom. Continue cooking until bottom is golden brown and egg is set all the way through, about 3 min.

Klunkers & Stumpjumpers

DESCHUTES HISTORICAL MUSEUM EXHIBIT SHINES LIGHT ON EARLY DAYS OF MOUNTAIN BIKING

Once upon a time, old-school klunker bikes gathered at the base of an undeveloped Awbrey Butte. Members of Klisters Corner and the Black Rock Riders would put in hours on their klunkers, ‘dirt bombing’ down old logging roads on bikes never meant for such terrain and returning with skinned legs and arms and grins from ear to ear. Their exploratory journeys formed the basis for mountain biking history in Central Oregon.

The Deschutes Historical Museum celebrates this journey with Klunkers and Stumpjumpers: A History on Two Wheels. Using journals, sketches, early prototypes and gear from the pioneers of this now modern sport, the museum invites visitors to step back in time when there were only trails to be blazed.

Museum director Kelly Cannon-Miller spent more than two years putting together the exhibit, which runs through January 2024. Cannon-Miller's storytelling highlights the technological advances of mountain bikes, the history and evolution of the area’s trails, and most gloriously, the eccentric cast of characters who created the mountain bike culture that’s become such a prominent part of Bend’s identity.

“This little bit of having fun on the weekends by this group of folks ended up becoming what’s a multimillion-dollar part of our tourism and recreation economy today,” CannonMiller told Oregon Public Broadcasting in April.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

TUMALO ART CO . TO FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHERS THIS FALL

THIS SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, TUMALO ART CO. WILL HOST TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS WITH VERY DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO THEIR MEDIUM. Dorothy Freudenberg’s exhibit, "Gardening in the Mind’s Imagination” opens September 4 featuring digital media exploding with color and layers of expression. Bruce Jackson’s “Intimate Landscapes” opens October 6 showcasing his zen-like captures of nature’s intricacy in exquisite detail.

When Dorothy Freudenberg arrived in Bend many years ago, her garden became the focal point of her burgeoning photography explorations. Eventually she expanded the concept to interpret the whole planet as a huge, interconnected garden. On her early morning walks, often in the Old Mill District along the river paths, Dorothy photographs ethereal images of patterns and textures in the flora and fauna often overlooked as mundane. Then, taking bits and pieces from all her photographs, she creates digital art that has its basis in the real world, but becomes pure emotion and imagination.

“ While love to photograph nature as it is, I also cannot limit my imagination to simply accept this as the final means of expression. Nature is the inspiration; the mind is the means to embellish and find sublime pleasure in the imagination’s play.” –

Tumalo Art Co.

A classically trained pianist, Dorothy has put the images of nature from her morning walks together with exquisite piano music into slideshows, and one of these calming compositions will be available during her September exhibit.

In October, Bruce Jackson moves us from the grand panoramic to “Intimate Landscapes”. Well known for his ability to capture both the complexity and simplicity of nature, Bruce’s display of new imagery focuses on the artistry expressed in smaller sections of the overall landscape. Using a 4x5” camera and film, waiting for the exact weather conditions and light, Bruce scouts far and wide to find his subject matter—sometimes on the wind-blown side of a mountain, but also being aware of the exquisite beauty right outside his backdoor.

ART STUDIOS AND GALLERIES IN THE DISTRICT ARE A DEEP WELL OF INSPIRATION

Kira Frances: Vibrant oil paintings and beyond. Kira’s work combines elements of abstraction and realism, asking the viewer to investigate the truth in context of one’s constructed reality. Begging the question, what is painting if not a glimpse into an altered form of reality?

Lindsay Gilmore: Get lost in the landscape. Lindsay is known for her landscape paintings that are inspired by the colors and compositions of natures contours that captivate her while on adventures with her family. Her hope is to capture some of the beauty and help folks place it in their home.

Jen McCaffery: Capturing movement on canvas. Jen’s former life as a dancer is the guiding light behind her paintings, the overarching aim of which is to create pieces that come alive on the canvas. Her styles range from abstract to impressionistic, with current thematic patterns of sky, wind and light.

AMEJKO ARTISTRY

Nomadic woven art. Anna Amerjko is the mastermind behind the original works of three-dimensional woven wall décor. Adorn your home with a piece from one of her new series like Mountain Landscapes, Desert Sun or Modern Lines, all reminders to slow down and appreciate every moment.

THE STACKS ART STUDIOS & GALLERY

Alyson Brown: Wild Folklore beverages and botanicals. Alyson is a photographer and stylist specialized in beverage photography. This passion for botanicals and cocktails led to her first book, “The Flower-Infused Cocktail: Flowers with a Twist” available at The Stacks!

LUBBESMEYER ART STUDIO AND GALLERY

Layers of inspiration. Twin artists, Lisa and Lori Lubbesmeyer, blend their backgrounds as an abstract painter and a realist printmaker to create strong visual statements in layers of fiber and other media. Visit the Lubbesmeyer Twins in their working studio and view their work which exemplifies their artistic range in varied subjects, including landscapes, architecture and still life.

TUMALO ART CO.

A fine art gallery. Tumalo Art Co. is an artist collective owned and operated by fourteen local members, known as a hub for many of Central Oregon’s best-known artists. Gallery-goers are treated to a variety of oil, acrylic and mixed media art work in addition to ceramics, glass, sculpture, photography, hand-pulled prints, hand-turned wood, handmade jewelry and more!

BIKEPACKING FOR BEGINNERS

MORE DIRT, MORE MILES, MORE FUN

PART BACKPACKING AND PART BIKE-TOURING, BIKEPACKING IS A FUN CHOICE FOR CYCLING BUDDIES, COUPLES, AND FAMILIES WHO RIDE TOGETHER. It lets you cover more miles than hiking, plus you can access dirt roads and trails that are inaccessible to other vehicles. Rides range from local overnighters all the way up to epic cross-country trail rides.

Many local bikepacking destinations are reached via Central Oregon’s many Forest Service roads and singletrack networks like Phil’s Trail, so a mountain bike makes an ideal choice. But virtually any bike that can mount racks and/or storage bags can be used. New handlebar grips or bar ends can be added to increase comfort for long days.

Avid bikepacking enthusiasts may tailor their bike for riding style or terrain, but most upgrades aim to minimize maintenance or maximize comfort.

The ideal for many: a rigid (no suspension or a suspension fork with lockout) 29er or 27.5 mountain bike with mechanical disc brakes and a multi-position handlebar. Internal gear hubs are popular, too, as they minimize maintenance (downside: They are harder to deal with when repairing a flat). While nice, such a setup is not required to have fun.

Bikepackers carry the same gear as backpackers plus spare bike tools and tubes. Fortunately, you have more places to carry it on a bike.

Unlike backpacking, you don’t want to carry a lot of weight on your back. Instead, most of the weight should be placed low as possible on your bike. This improves bike handling and your riding comfort.

A typical gear setup for beginners:

• Daypack: Good for light, bulky items or anything sensitive to vibration.

• Dry bag secured to a rear rack: Holds heavier items.

• Handlebar bag (or dry bag lashed to the bars): For light to moderate items (e.g., tent, pad, clothing).

• Water bottle cages: Keeps water weight low and centered.

• Panniers: Optional for heavy items (e.g., water, food, stove).

As far as finding routes, DirtyFreehub.org, Bikepacking.com, and REI in the Old Mill District are all great resources!
