WELCOME TO THE OLD MILL DISTRICT
Where the rhythm of the river meets the soul of the stage
Summers in Bend are magical and there’s no better place to experience that joy and wonder than the Old Mill District. Situated along the majestic Deschutes River and framed by the iconic Cascades, the Old Mill District blends scenic beauty, rich history, and unforgettable experiences into one gorgeous destination.
At the heart of the summer experience is the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, one of the premier outdoor music venues in the Pacific Northwest. Each summer, the amphitheater draws a lineup of global superstars, rock icons, and new favorites, all performing beneath a canopy of stars, with the river flowing just steps away. The 2025 season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet, with icons like James Taylor (May 19) and Sting (May 25-26) kicking off the early part of the summer, while can’tmiss-shows like The Black Keys (May 31), Mumford & Sons (June 5-6), The Red Clay Strays (July 26), LCD Sound System (Aug. 9-10), The Lumineers (Aug. 13-14), Alabama Shakes (Aug. 17), and Lainey Wilson (Aug. 21) fill out the rest of the 50-show schedule. Whether you're dancing barefoot on the grass or lounging in the VIP Deschutes Deck, every seat feels personal, every performance unforgettable.
Concert nights in the Old Mill District are more than just shows, they’re community events. Before the lights go up, the entire
district pulses with energy. Restaurants roll out special pre-show menus, patios fill with laughter, and music fans of all kinds come together in celebration. Whether you’re grabbing a bite at Greg’s Grill, sipping wine at Va Piano, or browsing the latest arrivals at Hello Sunshine, the buzz of concert energy is everywhere.
Of course, music isn’t the only thing happening here. The Old Mill District is a fullspectrum experience. Paddle the Deschutes by day, catch a world-class show by night. Shop for locally made art and apparel, explore riverfront trails, or simply grab a cone and watch the sunset from the footbridge. With more than 50 unique businesses, from outdoor outfitters and fitness studios to galleries and cafes, you’ll find countless ways to fill your days with joy.
This Summer 2025 Guide is your key to it all. Inside, you’ll find everything from the full Hayden Homes Amphitheater concert lineup – pages 2-16 – to highlights on Sisters Coffee’s seasonal annex, festivals and events around Central Oregon, and new store openings in the district.
So grab your ticket, strap on your favorite Chacos, and get ready to make the most of summer. Because here in the Old Mill District, the music never stops and neither does the fun.

Hayden Homes Amphitheater delivers your summer set list
Attending a show at Hayden Homes Amphitheater is more than entertainment; it’s an immersive experience that celebrates the synergy of exceptional performances, local flavors and the stunning backdrop of the Central Oregon skyline. It’s the kind of place where you kick off your shoes, relax into the rhythm and forget your worries for a while.
To us, our intimate 8,000-person venue that hugs the banks of the Deschutes River in the heart of Bend’s historic Old Mill District is the Award Winner for Best Outdoor Amphitheater in the Pacific Northwest. Don’t just take our word for it, voices on the internet have made themselves heard, too!
“What a great venue!” Billy D. on Google wrote. “Great sound, great lighting and great seats – all on the banks of the beautiful river! What more can you ask for? A great outdoor venue – can’t wait for next year.”
Steve W. on Facebook added, “My favorite people in the world! You make every single event special with all you do. It does not go unnoticed. Much love!”
Then there is Lily C. on Yelp sharing, “I can confidently say that this is one of the absolute best venues I have been to in Oregon, not because of the amazing views and open seating, but also the friendly and helpful staff you encounter at every step of the event process.”
The 2025 lineup reads like a Spotify playlist gone wild. Fans can look forward to legendary acts like Sting, Lainey Wilson, Neil Young, and Earth, Wind & Fire. As well as genre-bending and contemporary favorites Glass Animals, Jon Pardi, Alabama Shakes, and LCD Soundsystem. Think big names, indie darlings and rising stars you’ll brag about seeing “before they blew up.” Plus,
comedy icons Jerry Seinfeld, Trevor Noah, and Matt Rife deliver a dose of much needed laughter. The acoustics? Clean and crisp. The backdrop? Instagram gold. And the energy? Electric.
Hayden Homes Amphitheater isn’t just about sharing music, it’s about cultivating community. In fact, a space for folks to gather has been a part of the Old Mill District’s master plan since founder Bill Smith drew it up on day one, along with a note about our responsibility to protect the surrounding natural environment. Enter The Green Team, whose eco-conscious ethos pulse on-site every show helping to keep our concert footprint small. Recycling and composting stations, reusable cup programs, and local partnerships make sustainability feel like second nature - a seamless blend of music and mindfulness. Read more about the superstars of sustainability on page 10.
Hungry? Step over to food vendor row where culinary offerings round out the experience. Here, food trucks serve up artisan gyros, fresh poke bowls, free-range burgers, Bonta Gelato, and local dumplings all curated by regional purveyors who know their way around a flavor profile. Let’s just say, this is a town that takes its live music, and its food trucks, seriously.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a returning fan, one thing is certain—there is no venue in the Pacific Northwest quite like ours. At Hayden Homes Amphitheater we are setting the stage for more than concerts—we’re hosting excursions for audiophiles and compiling the soundtrack to your summer. And this summer is especially important as it marks the fifth anniversary of our partnership with Name-In-Title sponsor, Hayden Homes! Without whom, none of the magic would be possible. More on that in the coming pages. So, cruise on down and let the music carry you—under the stars, by the river, in the heart of Bend.

Joe Bonamassa is now synonymous with blues guitar, or as Guitar World wrote, “arguably the world’s biggest blues guitarist.” He has been featured on the cover of virtually every guitar magazine multiple times. MUSIC TO OUR EARS
HHA Green Team diverts nearly 90% of waste away from landfill
At the heart of Bend, Oregon’s music scene, nestled along the Deschutes River, the Hayden Homes Amphitheater has become more than just a destination for unforgettable live performances—it’s a beacon of environmental stewardship. Since launching its sustainability program in 2017, the venue’s Green Team has steadily transformed its operations, and is now recognized as a leading example for venues nationwide. Let’s break it down:
GARGANTUAN EFFORT: 100-plus Green Team superstars ensure we reduce our environmental impact; including, the use of free water-fill stations for reusable water bottles, compostable cups and utensils, cashless points of payment,
solar phone charging stations, separate receptacles for recycling, compost and trash as well as 150+ bike racks, courtesy of Visit Central Oregon and our official sustainably partner, OnPoint Community Credit Union.
RECORD SETTING: In 2024 the Green Team sorted through 224,377 pounds of waste and were able to repurpose, recycle, compost, or donate 194,867 pounds of that waste – an 87% diversion rate! Earning themselves, and the venue, national recognition by way of:
• 2024 Jack Johnson All At Once Sustainability Award
• 2024 Second-Highest In-Venue Diversion Rate - Live Nation
• 2024 Second-Lowest Landfill Waste Per Fan - Live Nation
• 2024 Highest Can and Bottle Redemption - Live Nation
EVERYTHING ANALYZED: The Green Team pulls anything and everything out of the waste bins to be sorted and sent to the proper waste or recycle stream. We’re talking every single landfill bag, compost bag and recycle bag of concert goer waste day in and day out. Want to help? Check out these pro tips from Sustainability Manager Justin Alvarado:
1. Not all items claiming to be recyclable or compostable, can be. When in doubt, ask any Green Team member in a green shirt for info!
2. If patrons find or create any bio-hazard material (vomit or baby diapers) please find a Green Team member for proper, safe disposal.
3. Please do not spit out Zyn’s onto the grass. They damage the property.
4. Leave No Trace! Similar to on a trail or in a park, please ensure to pick up after yourself and ensure your space is clean when the encore is over.
5. Be kind. Do good things. For each other, and our natural surroundings.
EMISSIONS REDUCED: With the help of Visit Central Oregon and our official sustainability partner, OnPoint Community Credit Union, Hayden Homes Amphitheater recently installed new bicycle racks that can accommodate 300 bikes. During the 2024 season, the Green Team calculated that 7,876 patrons chose to cycle to events. Estimating an average round-trip distance of 3 miles and 404 grams of CO2 emissions per mile typically produced by vehicles—these cyclists prevented 19.08 metric tons of carbon emissions from entering our atmosphere.
NO STOPPING US NOW: We’re building on the momentum with ambitious new targets for waste diversion, enhanced patron education and expanded community partnerships as we look forward to 2025, including achieving a 90% diversion rate!
TEAM: It takes all of us: The Hayden Homes Amphitheater Green Team and staff at large are committed to protecting our environment while creating world-class experiences for our community. Sustainability Manager Justin Alvarado says, “the things that I get excited about is our stewardship and care for the environment and the impact we
Compost

create in Central Oregon. It is an honor to be an example for other events around Central Oregon and the nation.” Adding, “We want to create lasting change that impacts our environment far and near to our home.” Amplifying the collective responsibility to protect the river, the health of the greater ecosystem and to ensure the next generation of Bend residents and concertgoers have a healthy environment to thrive in.
We want to thank the dedicated supporters of our Green Team: OnPoint Community Credit Union, Hayden Homes Amphitheater staff and management, Live Nation, Visit Central Oregon, and all patrons who have enthusiastically embraced our vision of an environmentally friendly venue in an industry often associated with excess. The Green Team’s achievements reflect a collective commitment to sustainability, demonstrating what’s possible when an entire community works together toward a common goal.

Lucky for us, they return for two epic nights with boundary pushing rockers, TV on the Radio! From the day LCD Soundsystem debuted in 2002 with the hilarious, hipster-spoofing single “Losing My Edge,” it set up the band and their label DFA as the coolest, most note-perfect things around. Driven by the vision of James Murphy, the band built on the dance floor impact of the song, releasing timeless tunes “Daft Punk is Playing at My House” and “Drunk Girls,” as well as recent singles “New Body Rhumba” and “X-Ray Eyes” that put the band firmly at the head of the robotic dance neo-disco class.

Their most recent album “LOVE HATE MUSIC BOX” was produced by Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves) along with Konrad Snyder (Noah Kahan) and lead singer Ela Melo. When RÜFÜS DU SOL made their Bend debut in 2022 they taught us a thing or two about what electronic dance music can do, the production value, the creative ingenuity and careful intention behind each note. The result? A grand ole oh-so-glittery dance party for the masses. Needless to say, we’re ecstatic to see what they bring next summer!
The Lumineers
WITH TOM ODELL
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13 & THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 2025

Renowned for their idiosyncratic and inventive songcraft, as well as their energetic and emotionally resonant live performances, The Lumineers have won international acclaim and a devoted fan following. Founded in 2005 by Wesley Schultz (lead vocals, guitar) and Jeremiah Fraites (drums, percussion, piano), the band has evolved from anthemic Americana pioneers to storytellers of alternative rock-driven narratives and a global stadium touring act. While the songs of their latest album “Automatic” explore new terrain, both musically and thematically, it all sounds very much like the Lumineers – the soaring choruses, shadowy themes wrapped in upbeat, infectious melodies, and what Fraites calls “a palpable sense of connection between Wes and me. There’s lots of love on this record. I can’t wait to tour behind it.”
Trampled By Turtles and Shakey Graves
FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2025
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Show starts at 7 p.m.

Bluegrass-influenced folk phenoms Trampled By Turtles have figuratively set stages on fire with their special brand of string jams since 2003. A sound Rolling Stone describes as “Midwestern Gothic,” TBT has carved a space all their own with fast, often frenetic delivery that owes as much to rock and roll as to bluegrass. Says mandolinist Erik Berry, “There’s always been this sense in our band that if you put your heads down and focus on doing it the best that you can – playing the shows the best that you can, playing your instruments the best that you can, then good things will come of that.” Shakey Graves creates his blues infused folk rock from similar ethos. “Imagination really is the tool,” he shares. Adding, “I’ve always been on this quest to make people feel like my own music is a choose your own adventure. To allow them to sculpt it using their own prompts—allowing them create something new.”

FIVE AMAZING YEARS
Hayden Homes celebrates fifth anniversary of amphitheater naming
Hayden Homes is thrilled to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Hayden Homes Amphitheater’s naming rights partnership with a series of celebrations, including earlier this spring a giveaway for five lucky winners to experience a night of live music in style.
“The Hayden Homes Amphitheater is an iconic community gathering place that unites people from all over the region–and indeed the country–to enjoy great live music together along the beautiful banks
of the Deschutes River,” said Katy Wooderson, Hayden Homes Vice President of Marketing. “We’re so grateful to our partners at the Old Mill District and Live Nation for supporting our commitment to building a strong community–it’s about so much more than just building homes.”
Five years ago, the Amphitheater became known as the Hayden Homes Amphitheater as part of the company’s Give As You Go philosophy, which is rooted in community
partnerships and creating opportunities for everyone to lead fulfilled lives. The Hayden Homes Amphitheater offers just that: a place to join together, create memories, and enjoy unforgettable live music experiences.
“This partnership has been everything we’ve hoped for and more,” said Marney Smith, the longtime General Manager of the amphitheater and President of The Bend Company, which developed and owns the venue with its partnership group, River Bend Limited Partnership. “Since we’ve partnered with Hayden Homes, we’ve hosted more than 150 shows on our stage and welcomed hundreds of thousands of fans through our gates. Hayden Homes has always been a supporter of arts, culture, and community. What they’ve done with their support of the amphitheater is to help elevate live music not just in Bend or Central Oregon, but the state as a whole.”
To celebrate and kick off the concert season, Hayden Homes gave away concert packages to five lucky winners, including all the very best that Bend and the Old Mill District have to offer. Two VIP Deschutes Deck tickets to a show of their choosing, a one-night stay in Bend, and gifts from Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe and the Old Mill District.
“There’s nothing like live music on a summer night in Bend — and for the past five years, Hayden Homes Amphitheater has set the stage for those unforgettable moments,” said Rob Scolaro, Senior Vice President and Head of Venue Sales at Live Nation. “We’re proud to partner with Hayden Homes and the Old Mill District to make those moments possible — and now, Hayden Homes is giving fans an incredible opportunity to be part of the magic in an even bigger way.”
Established in Redmond, Oregon in 1989, Hayden Homes has provided over 27,000 new homes to price-conscious, value-driven homebuyers in underserved, secondary markets throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. Hayden Homes continues to be the largest privately-owned new home builder in the Pacific Northwest. Hayden Homes exists to Give As You Go, together building strong communities, and leading fulfilled lives.
OMD HIGHLIGHTS
THIS SCENIC RIVER? THE CLEANUP WAS PERSONAL
Private passion turned forgotten banks into Bend’s summer hotspot
The Deschutes River is more than just a scenic backdrop in Bend. It’s where we paddle, picnic and float our worries away. From river surfing at the Bend Whitewater Park to sunset walks along the Deschutes River Trail, this waterway flows through the center of how we live, play and connect.
And while it might feel like the river’s always been ready for summer fun, it actually took a massive behind-the-scenes effort to make this flow-friendly lifestyle possible.
When the River Was a Workhorse
For nearly 80 years, the banks of the Deschutes were dominated by industry. The Brooks-Scanlon and Shevlin-Hixon lumber mills were the driving force behind Bend’s economy, operating on opposite sides of the river. The hum of the mills shaped daily life. Whistles signaled the rhythm of the town. Workers carried home scraps to build entire neighborhoods by hand.
But industrial success came at a cost. Logging debris and sawdust blanketed the riverbanks and filled the riverbed. In some places, it was more than 15 feet deep. Invasive plants choked out native species. Soil contamination made the land unsafe. For generations, access to this stretch of the Deschutes was cut off. The river, once vital to commerce, had become off-limits to the community.
Starting the Vision
In 1993, Bill Smith and the River Bend Partnership acquired 270 acres along both sides of the Deschutes River. At the time, the last lumber mill was still operating. It shut down for good the following year.
Faced with the challenge of restoring the site, William Smith Properties, Inc. had two options: wait for state or federal funds or take it on themselves. Smith chose the latter and never looked back.
Through private investment and a lot of grit, the team launched a multi-year, multi-agency cleanup. They tackled nearly 20 environmental concerns. Contaminated soils were removed. Monitoring wells were installed. Asbestos was addressed. Massive layers of sawdust were excavated from the riverbed. Boulders and gravel were brought in to stabilize banks.
One of the most powerful additions was a fish ladder, built into the spillway to help spawning species access areas that had been blocked for more than 80 years.
More than 14,000 linear feet of riverfront was restored and reopened to the public, a stretch that had been inaccessible for nearly a century.
From Brownfield to Bend’s Backyard
In 1999, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued a “No Further Action” designation, signaling the successful completion of the cleanup. Just three years later, in 2002, the Environmental Protection Agency honored the Old Mill District with its prestigious Region 10 Phoenix Award for Brownfield Redevelopment. The project wasn’t just recognized. It stood out as the only private development in the region to receive the award.
The term “brownfield” refers to former industrial or commercial properties complicated by contamination. But with determination, these sites can become something more. In Bend’s case, it became a place for wildlife, recreation, business and community to coexist.
Lumber Out, Leisure In
The transformation didn’t stop with the cleanup. A new zoning designation called Mixed-Use Riverfront was created with the City of Bend to make space for a thoughtful balance of residential, commercial and ecological uses. Trails were built. Native vegetation was reintroduced. Interpretive signs were installed to help tell the story of what came before.
Today, the Deschutes is alive with activity. Kayakers and outriggers glide past riverbanks that once held mill debris. Families float between Riverbend and Drake Park. Fly fishers cast their lines at dawn. Concertgoers at Hayden Homes Amphitheater sway to the music that now echoes over waters once known only for their utility.
Whether you’re soaking up the sun at McKay Park, walking the River Trail with your dog or pausing to watch the current drift by, you’re experiencing a river that was restored with intention. What once was closed off is now a space to move, breathe and connect. And it’s yours to enjoy.
Want to Know What Progress Looks Like?
It looks like river otters slipping through clear water and swallows darting overhead. It looks like native grasses swaying where sawdust once piled and a concert stage that backs up to a river people can
actually admire, from a float tube midstream, a trail bench with coffee in hand or a hillside blanket under the stars. It’s music over water, laughter skipping across the surface and sunset selfies with smokestacks in the background.
It looks like a town that believed in something better and made it real.
So next time you float past the iconic smokestacks, remember this river didn’t just clean itself. It was reimagined, restored and reopened with you in mind.
Your Turn to Make Waves
With more than 250,000 people using the Deschutes each summer, protecting this natural treasure is a shared responsibility. That’s where Enjoy. Protect. Respect. comes in.
It’s more than a motto. It’s a movement. However you enjoy the river, just know it’s here because someone cleaned it up for the community, not for credit. Let’s return the favor.
GO WITH THE FLOW AND FLOAT LIKE A PRO
Stay safe, respect the river, and don’t be that guy
Summer in Bend isn’t complete without a float down the Deschutes. Whether you’re a seasoned river rat or a first-time floater, knowing what to expect will make your trip smooth sailing (or, well, smooth floating). From the best routes to safety tips and gear must-haves, consider this your go-to guide for a stress-free day on the water.
LAUNCH LIKE A PRO
At 805 SW Industrial Way, just a paddle’s throw from where the mills once buzzed, you’ll find Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe. This isn’t just any paddle shop, it’s Central Oregon’s go-to for stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes year-round. During the summer, they also rent float tubes, giving you everything you need for a perfect river day. Advanced reservations are recommended, but walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe makes floating the river easy by offering three rental locations: Headquarters at 805 SW Industrial Way, Park & Float at 1000 Bradbury Way, and Riverbend Park at 799 SW Columbia. The Park & Float location is a one-stop spot where you can rent tubes, grab a shuttle ticket, and stock up on essentials like reef-safe sunscreen, dry bags, and water shoes.
FLOAT SMARTER, NOT HARDER
A stress-free float starts with preparation. Here’s what to keep in mind:
• Safety first: Tumalo Creek provides a quick but essential safety talk before you hit the water. Pay attention, it covers everything from river etiquette to navigating currents.
• Shoes save the day: Water shoes or river sandals will protect your feet from unexpected rocky surprises. Flip-flops? Not your best bet.
• No dogs allowed: As much as we love our four-legged friends, rental tubes aren’t built for paws and claws.
• Leave the drinks on dry land: Alcohol isn’t allowed on the river, so save the celebratory sip for later.
• Life jackets are free: PFDs (personal flotation devices) are available at no extra charge. They’re not just a good idea, they’re required for children 12 and under.
• Secure your gear: No one wants to fish for their phone mid-float, so bring a dry bag or leave valuables behind.
PICK YOUR PERFECT FLOAT
Pick your adventure based on how long you want to be on the water:
• Riverbend Park to McKay Park (Short Float): About 45 minutes. A quick and scenic option. Exit at McKay Park or take on the whitewater rapids.
• McKay Park to Drake Park (Short Float): About 45 minutes. A mellow ride with easy access points.
• Riverbend Park to Drake Park (Long Float): 120 to 140 minutes. The classic Bend float with a mix of calm waters and adventure.
• Locals’ tip: If you’re unsure about navigating the rapids at Bend Whitewater Park, you can always hop out and walk past them before re-entering the river.

A FAMILY DREAM RISES
M’s Bakery launches in the Old Mill District
There’s something special happening in the Old Mill District. Where the scent of freshly baked bread lingers in the air and neighbors greet each other with coffee in hand, M’s Bakery has quickly become more than just a new spot—it’s a story of dreams coming to life.
Husband and wife duo Dario Muciño Trujillo and Macy Davis opened M’s Bakery in early 2025 and the community has embraced them wholeheartedly. From the start, this venture was never just about opening a business; it was about creating a space where their love for food, family and heritage could be shared with others.
Dario, who was born and raised in Mexico City, carries with him years of experience in kitchens across North America, but the heart of M’s isn’t just built on technique but on intention. His passion for slowfermented breads, traditional recipes and the flavors
of his home country blend seamlessly with Macy’s eye for design and warmth for people. The result is a bakery that feels familiar, personal and full of care.
As the couple prepared to open their first location in Bend, they were also preparing to welcome their second child. Macy spent the final months of pregnancy helping bring their vision to life, juggling the demands of building a business and growing a family all at once. It’s a season of change and one that’s shaped every detail of the space.
M’s Bakery
HOURS: Open daily, 7a.m. – 3 p.m.
WHERE: 330 SW Powerhouse Drive Suite 140 (Across from Anthropologie)
Walk inside and you’ll find more than pastries and bread. The walls tell a story, adorned with artisan wool decor from a third-generation family of sheep farmers in Mexico and handmade tiles sourced from San Miguel de Allende, where Macy and Dario were married. These details aren’t just aesthetic. They’re symbols of a journey that began long before the bakery doors opened.
That same thoughtfulness is baked into everything they offer. M’s pays tribute to Dario’s heritage not through a list of menu items but through ingredients, methods and the care put into each bite. Plans are already underway to introduce locally sourced Mexican chocolates, coffee and wine, expanding the experience and deepening the connection to culture.
But perhaps the most meaningful part of M’s Bakery is how it brings people together. Whether you’re grabbing a loaf of bread on the way home or staying to sip coffee with a friend, the space feels like an extension of the couple themselves. Welcoming, generous and full of life. There’s already a rhythm here, a sense that this bakery has always been part of the district. For Dario and Macy, M’s is a dream realized but it’s also just the beginning. Their journey is still unfolding with a growing family and a growing business side by side. And for the rest of us, it’s a chance to be part of that story.
Stop by M’s Bakery in the Old Mill District and say hello. Grab a treat, feel the warmth and welcome yourself into a space built on love.
FANTASTIC PHO
New restaurant, Pho 88, now open in the Old Mill District
Pho 88, which offers traditional Vietnamese fare, opened this May at 330 SW Powerhouse Drive, Suite 150 in the Old Mill District, next to M’s Bakery.
The restaurant is the latest venture from Alice Nguyen, a seasoned restaurant operator with past ties to the Old Mill District. Having previously managed Mio Sushi in the district, as well as her own restaurant in Vietnam, Nguyen brings years of experience and passion for high-quality, flavorful Asian cuisine.

HOURS: Open daily
WHERE: 330 SW Powerhouse Drive Suite 150
(Next to M’s Bakery)
“I loved everything about the Old Mill District,” Nguyen said about her seven years leading Mio Sushi. “And I am beyond excited to get back down there to work with them again and add a Vietnamese restaurant to the district.”
Diners can look forward to a diverse menu featuring classic Vietnamese favorites.
Signature dishes include aromatic bowls of pho, with options like steak, brisket, meatball, oxtail, and chicken. Rice noodle soups and vermicelli noodle bowls packed with fresh herbs and tasty flavors are also on the menu.
For those seeking lighter bites, Pho 88 offers appetizers such as fresh spring rolls, crispy wontons, tempura, and fried chicken wings. The menu also features banh mi sandwiches, rice plates, and plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
Additionally, Pho 88 boasts a full bar, complete with wine, beer, and cocktails.
“This is a fantastic addition for food lovers in Bend who are looking for authentic Vietnamese cuisine,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director at the Old Mill District. “Alice is a phenomenal operator; we’re so thankful she chose us as the place to launch her first Bend restaurant.”
Pho 88 is the culmination of more than a decade of experience in the restaurant world for Nguyen.
“I am thrilled to bring another authentic Vietnamese restaurant to Bend and share some more traditional Vietnamese dishes with our community,” Nguyen said. “We are just so happy to bring this concept to the Old Mill District and be part of that team again.”
A QUICK CAFFEINE FIX
Sisters Coffee adds annex location in the Old Mill District
Can you ever have too much coffee?
Sisters Coffee is popping up an additional location in the Old Mill District this summer, just across the street from their popular café in the heart of the district.
The Sisters Coffee Annex in the Makers’ Shed is open Friday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., through mid-June, and then daily throughout the summer. The Annex will offer drip coffee, cold brew, nitro cold brew, kombucha, hot and iced tea, Italian sodas, and an array of barista specials. Guests can also grab walk-worthy snacks and cereal bars made in-house.
“The Annex will be a benefit to all those who just need a quick pick me up,” said Michelle Carlson, Sisters Coffee’s OMD District General Manager. “It'll be a quick way for families, Old Mill District employees, and shoppers to grab a fun, high-quality drink, without the time commitment of stepping into a café.”
Especially exciting for Carlson and her team is the opportunity to offer cold refreshments like kombucha, nitro cold coffee, and sparkling lemonade on tap.

PASS THE PICCATA, PLEASE!
Gather
‘round, grab a plate, and dig into a Bend-born
cookbook
You can practically taste the sunshine in these seasonal staples.
Trish Smith’s long-awaited cookbook, “Feeding My Friends,” serves up more than 200 dishes perfect for warm-weather gatherings.
Inspired by decades of hosting in Bend and her childhood in Washington’s Yakima Valley, Trish’s recipes reflect the spirit of Central Oregon with a focus on fresh, local ingredients and a relaxed approach to cooking.
Whether you’re planning a backyard dinner or a long lunch with friends, these dishes are made to be shared.
Start things off with a “Limoncello Spritzer” (p. 16), Trish’s light twist on the classic Italian liqueur. Traditionally served icy and straight, limoncello becomes a breezy aperitivo with just a splash of soda. You can find it at most Central Oregon liquor stores, and Trish recommends keeping a bottle in the freezer for an extra crisp pour.
When summer produce is at its peak, she turns to her “Greek Salad” (p. 82).
Juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, briny olives and creamy feta come together in a combo that plays nice with just about any sunny-day spread. Mix it up with big chopped veggies and rustic croutons, or go bite-sized with a fine dice and crumbled crunch.
“Spring Pea and Mint Soup” (p. 53) is bright, fresh and perfect for easing into the warmer months. Serve it hot or chilled, topped with a mint leaf and a dollop of sour cream if you like. Trish likes to pour it into tiny cups for a light, easy starter.
For the main event, her “Chicken Piccata” (p. 93) is a standout. Inspired by the veal piccata she used to order in Italy, this lemony chicken version is easy to make and hard to forget. The buttery sauce with a pop of capers hits that perfect sweet spot between casual and elegant.
Then there’s “Green Beans with Shallot and Lemon” (p. 175), a side that brings serious snap. Bright, simple and citrusy, it’s the kind of dish that makes people ask for the recipe, then go back for seconds.
With a lineup like this, it’s no wonder Trish’s recipes have fed generations of family and friends. Every page is filled with stories, flavor and a whole lot of heart.
Feeding My Friends is available at the Ticket Mill, BUDD + FINN, Kara’s Kitchenware, and Greg’s Grill in the Old Mill District, as well as Newport Market, Market of Choice, Donner’s Flower Shop, Dudley’s Books, Roundabout Books, the Pine Tavern restaurant, Borgo Rosati, and online at OldMillDistrict.com.
PATRICIA SMITH
Limoncello Spritzers
Limoncello is a very special liquor from the south of Italy where the lemon trees are everywhere. It is often served as an after-dinner drink, icy cold and straight. However, it makes a lovely aperitivo when mixed with soda.
Serves 6
ice cubes
3 C. limoncello
12 T. fresh lemon juice
3 ½ C. very cold soda or sparkling water, like San Pellegrino
fresh lemon slices
fresh mint leaves
Mix the limoncello and fresh lemon juice in a pitcher and chill for at least an hour. Just before serving, add cold soda or sparkling water, like San Pellegrino.
Add ice cubes to 6 wine glasses. Pour the chilled limoncello over the ice and. garnish with lemon slices and mint. You can generally find limoncello in most Central Oregon liquor stores. Keep it in the freezer if you like, to pour for an after dinner drink.
Spring Pea and Mint Soup
Greek Salad
In the summertime, when the tomatoes and cucumbers are at their best, this salad is my go-to. Everyone loves this dish, it goes with nearly any summer dinner and you can vary it by chopping the veggies in large pieces, with big croutons or in a small dice, with crumbled croutons for variety.
Serves 8 to 10
For the dressing:
½ C. extra virgin olive oil
Mashed anchovy, to taste.
(You can also use anchovy paste.)
2 T. fresh lemon juice
lemon zest
2 cloves fresh garlic, minced
½ tsp. dried oregano
¼ tsp. kosher salt
¼ tsp. coarsely ground black pepper
For the salad:
2-3 large ripe tomatoes, seeds and pulp removed, diced (large or small)
3 oz. pitted Kalamata olives
1 large English cucumber, diced (peel if you want, but the dark green skin looks beautiful in the dish)
1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 red onion, diced
3-4 oz. feta cheese, crumbled fresh basil leaves for garnish
Whisk together the dressing ingredients. Combine the diced vegetables, olives and cheese in a large bowl and toss generously with the dressing. Fold in the croutons and garnish with fresh basil leaves.
In Bend, it takes a long time for spring to come. We get teasers, sunny days with warm temperatures, but it can and does snow, even into June. But this spring pea soup can help prepare for what’s to come. Serve it in small, 2-3 oz. cups.
2 T. vegetable oil
6 scallions, whites only, finely chopped
1 head butter lettuce, cored and shredded
3 T. finely chopped fresh mint
4 + C. chicken broth
3-4 C. frozen baby peas
2 T. fresh lemon juice
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
In a large saucepan, heat the oil. Add the scallions and stir occasionally, until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the shredded lettuce and sauté until wilted, another 4-5 minutes. Add the mint, broth, peas and lemon juice. Bring to a simmer and cook 4-5 minutes to blend the flavors. Add the salt and pepper and taste, adjusting seasonings if necessary.
Let the soup cool, then use an immersion blender to puree. Taste again for seasoning. This soup can be served chilled, but it is delicious hot as well. Top with a small fresh mint leaf and a tiny dollop of sour cream if you wish.
For the croutons:
2 C. striata bread, from the Village Baker (or other crusty rustic bread, cut into 1 or 2 inch cubes, depending on how you dice your vegetables
2-3 T. extra virgin olive oil
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
Place the dried bread cubes on a baking sheet, drizzle generously with olive oil, tossing with your hand to be sure they are evenly covered. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes.
Chicken
Piccata
In Italy, one of my favorite dishes on nearly any menu is veal piccata or veal limone. Sadly, I find it very hard to locate good, tender veal here in Oregon. So, this recipe is an alternative, a most attractive meal sure to satisfy.
Serves 2 to 4
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, trimmed of excess fat
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
½ C. Wondra flour
3 T. olive oil
4 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and minced
⅓ C. dry white wine
1 T. capers, drained and coarsely chopped
4 T. unsalted butter, cut into pieces
½ C. water
2 tsp. fresh lemon juice
freshly chopped parsley and lemon slices, for garnish
Place the trimmed pieces of chicken between sheets of parchment paper and gently pound them to a thin, even shape. Lightly season both sides with kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper.
Place the flour in a flat shallow bowl and working one at a time coat each piece of chicken with the flour on both sides. Place on a plate and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes before cooking.
Heat 2 T. olive oil in a skillet, and working in batches if needed, cook the cutlets without moving them, until deeply browned, about 2 minutes. Turn over, and cook until the chicken is just cooked through, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a clean plate.
Add the garlic and remaining 1 T. oil to the skillet and cook, keeping the garlic from burning, about 2 minutes. Add the wine and capers and stir up the brown bits on the bottom of the skillet, about 3 minutes. Add ½ C. water, followed by the butter, stirring vigorously, to form an emulsion.
Return the chicken to the skillet and simmer until the chicken is coated and the sauce is thickened, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and add the lemon juice. Season with salt and serve on a platter, topped with minced parsley and lemon slices.
Green Beans with Shallot and Lemon
Green beans are often given a bad reputation due to extreme over or undercooking. These crispy, fresh green beans are sure to be a nice surprise.
Serves 4 to 6
1 lb. fresh green beans, trimmed, and cut into 2-3 inch pieces
salted water
1 small shallot peeled and finely diced
2-3 T. olive oil zest of 1 lemon
kosher salt and coarsely ground black pepper, to taste
Bring the water to a boil, add the beans and cook for 4-5 minutes. Using a strainer, immediately remove the beans and plunge them into ice water to stop the cooking and preserve the bright green color.
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the diced shallot for 2-3 minutes. Set aside.
When ready to serve, warm the shallots and oil briefly, add to the cooked green beans to warm, sprinkle on the lemon zest, salt and pepper and enjoy.

COMMUNITY
Central Oregon Community College marks a major anniversary SWEET 75
Community is at the core — and central to the name — of Central Oregon Community College, now turning 75 this academic year and celebrating an enduring role of serving Central Oregonians.
The four-campus college, which covers a 10,000-square-mile district, got its start in 1949 by providing higher education to many folks connected to the logging and mill industries. Fun fact: Les Schwab, founder of Les Schwab Tire Centers, was a student of the college in its very first year — after receiving his early education in a railroad boxcar at a BrooksScanlon logging camp.
Since COCC’s founding, tens of thousands of students have graduated from COCC, or taken credit or noncredit classes to gain a new skill or try a new experience. Today, COCC offers more than 70 unique academic programs and a wide scope of noncredit courses.
From Gilchrist to Bend to Warm Springs, Central Oregonians can come to COCC for affordable, accessible education and lifelong learning, where new technologies, trainings and opportunities contribute to the region’s well-being.
Longstanding COCC traditions like the Central Oregon Symphony, Chandler Lecture Series, Latinx Heritage Month, Season of Nonviolence, and Salmon Bake continue to engage and inspire, while every year new opportunities and events — topical and inspiring — add to Central Oregon’s cultural enrichment.
Old Mill District creators Bill and Trish Smith, whose legacy in Central Oregon goes far beyond reimagining the city’s long-gone lumberyards into a dynamic community hub, have supported COCC and the power of an education for half a century with board leadership and student support. That partnership and involvement with the college is a mission shared and supported by many across the high desert, from individuals and schools to nonprofits and local industry.
“We are here today at this significant milestone because the leaders and communities of Central Oregon prioritized higher education, with a focus on access and affordability, and we’re proud to have been a part of so many individual lives,” says Dr. Laurie Chesley, President of the college. “This anniversary is really as much a celebration of Central Oregon as it is COCC.” Learn more at COCC.edu/about/75
Partners for Affordable Housing chart a new path in Bend BOLD ACTION REQUIRES NEW SOLUTIONS
Partners for Affordable Housing is a unique coalition of more than 30 organizations – Central Oregon Builders Association, Bend Chamber, Envision Bend, Habitat for Humanity, Bend Police Association, Oregon Nurses Association, R&H Construction, and more - around bold solutions to increase housing supply and lower housing costs across Central Oregon. The diverse membership consists of housing experts, small and large businesses, unions, and groups representing impacted populations such as seniors, veterans and low-income families. As housing continues to impact our community and frontline workforce’s ability to thrive, the coalition is hard at work on their mission to educate elected leaders, to tell stories that uplift voices of community members facing crisis, and to advocate prohousing policies at the local and state levels.
In the first quarter of 2025, Partners for Affordable Housing adopted a Policy Agenda with concrete goals that were submitted to City
Councils during goal-setting processes in Bend, Sisters, Redmond, and La Pine. These policies were incorporated into local housing goals across the county through collaborative engagement with local governments.
In the second quarter of 2025, the coalition is focused on pro-housing bills and funding being addressed in the state legislative session, including a major $31.6 million ask for infrastructure funding in Bend that will unlock more than 6,000 homes that have already been approved by the City of Bend but cannot move forward until critical water, sewer and transportation infrastructure is funded.

KIDS CENTER CORK & BARREL POPS OFF THIS JULY
Snazzy summer wine tasting for an incredible cause

Cork & Barrel sets itself apart from other wine events by giving guests access to the winery owners and winemakers, so folks can meet the people behind the wine. It’s also a weekend of philanthropy. These dinners sell out quickly, so sign up for updates. “This new branch marks a significant milestone for Mid Oregon,” says Kevin Cole, Mid Oregon’s President and CEO. “The mass-timber construction honors the rich history of the Old Mill District and reflects our commitment in providing an exceptional experience for our members, growing community and employees.”
Mid Oregon Credit Union is a full-service, member-owned financial cooperative that’s served Central Oregonians since 1957. With approximately 49,000 members in Deschutes, Jefferson, Crook, Wheeler, Lake, and North Klamath counties and

Mid Oregon partnered with Steele Associates Architects and SunWest Builders for the three-story, 15,945 sq. ft. building. The ground floor features a fullservice branch, complete with drive-up teller and ATM lanes.
As part of the new facility, Mid Oregon’s executive leadership, wealth management, home loans, and several back-office departments will relocate, providing much needed space for the credit union’s growing staff of 160.

VISIT BEND ANNOUNCES 2025 BEND SUSTAINABILITY FUND GRANT AWARDEES
Old Mill District one of six winners
Six community projects that range from new, lighted pickleball courts to creating new downhill mountain bike trails for riders of all abilities will receive more than half a million dollars in grants from the 2025 Bend Sustainability Fund (BSF), a Visit Bend project that funnels money from a lodging tax paid by visitors directly to local institutions. The projects proposed by groups like the Central Oregon Trail Alliance, the Old Mill District, and the Deschutes Trails Coalition are all shovelready and will receive grants ranging from $19,660 to $193,000. The total amount awarded since the fund’s inception in 2021 now tops $3.38 million across 31 projects that have included building a pump track at Big Sky Park, helping with renovations at the Tower Theatre, and making climbing routes at Smith Rock safer by replacing bolts and other critical hardware.
An independent group, the BSF Advisory Council, received 10 grant requests during the application window from November 2024 to January 2025. The council narrowed the field to six winners. Visit Bend’s board of directors approved the projects in March.
Here are the grant winners for the 2025 funding cycle:
• Old Mill District: Support the installation of four, level 2 EV charging stations.
• Bend Pickleball Club: Provide lights for new, free pickleball courts that are coming to Pine Nursery Park.
• Deschutes Trails Coalition: Help install two new, permanent docks at Cultus Lake and Paulina Lake to improve access for all users, extend the season, and enhance riparian areas.
• Nature Connect Central Oregon: Help enhance the roof at Skyliner Lodge, serving local students and also as a wedding and event venue space.
• Central Oregon Trail Alliance: Developing a comprehensive mountain bike hub at Wanoga Trailhead Sno-Park, including four new downhill trails for a diverse group of cyclists.
• Deschutes County Department of Solid Waste: Boost recycling and waste reduction at Bend events.
“One of the best things about tourism is the opportunity to reinvest visitor dollars into projects that benefit our community directly,” said Zavier Borja, Destination Stewardship Director for Visit Bend. “Each funded project shows thoughtful, long-term planning and a real commitment to sustaining Central Oregon’s environment, culture, and economy. Residents and visitors can both get excited about these kinds of investments.”
"COTA is so excited to be selected for this grant,” said Emmy Andrews, COTA Executive Director. “The Bend Sustainability Fund funds so many good projects in our community and COTA is honored to be among this year's grant recipients."
“This funding will be used to enhance the Bend Park and Recreation District facility at Pine Nursery Park by adding overhead lighting to new pickleball courts planned for construction,” added Kirk Foster, Bend Pickleball Club Board President. “As pickleball continues to grow in popularity —especially here in Bend— many players struggle to find time to play during daylight hours due to work, school, and other commitments. With the addition of overhead lighting, we can extend court hours of play for both locals and visitors, allowing more opportunities to enjoy the game they love. This project will not only increase accessibility but also will support the continued growth of pickleball in our region, strengthening our vibrant and active community. The Bend Pickleball Club is deeply grateful to the Bend Sustainability Fund for their generous support and dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities in our area.”
“Reinvesting room tax dollars into projects that support our local community ensures that the Bend we know and love today will remain a special place for future generations,” said Jeff Knapp, Visit Bend CEO. “These projects not only support the visitor economy that’s so important in Bend but also enhance the quality of life for folks who live here.”
Projects eligible for consideration are required to protect, steward, or create a tourism-related facility with an impactful life of at least 10 years and offer substantial use by visitors.

LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS MOVE INTO THE OLD MILL DISTRICT
Deschutes River Conservancy and Upper Deschutes Watershed Council relocate to historic Mill A Building on the Deschutes
The Deschutes River Conservancy (DRC) and Upper Deschutes Watershed Council (UDWC) are two of the newest members of the Old Mill District.
After nearly 30 years of dedicated work to protect and restore the Deschutes Basin, the move in February marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both organizations. For the DRC, this transition came as the team expanded to meet growing needs and as both organizations tackle new conservation
opportunities. Moving to the new space offers room to grow and collaborate on future initiatives.
The new office in the historic Mill A Building is above Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe, putting the organizations near fellow river enthusiasts. Leased in partnership with William Smith Properties Inc., the space provides a central and collaborative location that will enable the organizations to strengthen partnerships, engage the community, and continue advancing conservation efforts. The inspiring views of the Deschutes River will serve as a daily reminder of the mission to protect and restore the watershed.
“We’ve outgrown our previous space, and this move comes at the perfect time,” said Kate Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of the Deschutes River Conservancy. “The new location allows us to grow, build new partnerships, and inspire our team with a direct connection to the river we strive to protect. With new staff members joining and an ongoing focus on advancing conservation projects, this office will serve as a hub for collaboration and innovation.”
In addition to the move, the DRC and UDWC are looking forward to hosting an open house in the spring to welcome the community into their new space and celebrate this new chapter together.
“The UDWC has helped restore and protect the Deschutes River over the years through the Old Mill District and we host the annual Deschutes River Cleanup in the OMD and other stretches of the river each summer. UDWC staff are looking forward to the inspiration that comes with being close to the river every day and continuing our work to restore and protect the Deschutes River and watershed,” said Kris Knight, Executive Director of the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council. “This move enhances our ability to build on nearly three decades of conservation efforts and engage the community in preserving our local watershed.”
The Old Mill District also expressed enthusiasm about the move.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Deschutes River Conservancy and the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council to the Old Mill District,” said Beau Eastes, Marketing Director for the Old Mill District. “Their work plays a critical role in protecting the Deschutes River, which is the heart of our community. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to preserving the natural beauty and health of the watershed for generations to come.”
The move aligns with both organizations’ long-term goals of scaling their impact and restoring streamflows, water quality, and habitat in the basin. As the Deschutes Basin enters its next big phase of conservation, the DRC and UDWC are wellpositioned to lead the charge in collaborative and sustainable watershed education and management.

A NEW SPARK AT HELLO SUNSHINE
New owner Alesha Simpkins brings heart, style, and whole lot of warmth to the Old Mill District shop
If you’ve strolled through the Old Mill District, chances are you’ve passed by the welcoming doors of Hello Sunshine. Located between Francesca’s and J. Jill, this cheerful, locally owned boutique radiates good energy and effortless charm. Lately, there’s been a fresh sparkle inside. That new glow? It’s Alesha Simpkins, the shop’s new owner and the heart behind its next chapter.
Alesha’s path to this space didn’t start in retail. For over a decade, she worked in the focused, high-pressure world of radiology. While she valued the purpose of that work, it was the one-on-one connections, those small human moments, that brought her the most fulfillment. As time went on, she felt an undeniable pull toward something more creative, something that could fully reflect her love for people and her eye for beauty.
“I realized it was time to follow a different kind of vision, one that had been quietly calling me for years,” Alesha shares. “Owning this boutique is more than a career shift; it’s a dream turned into reality.”
That dream now lives in every inch of Hello Sunshine, from its thoughtfully selected women’s clothing to the handcrafted bags, candles and locally made goods that celebrate the spirit of Central Oregon.
“Radiology gave me the privilege of helping people in one way,” Alesha says. “This boutique gives me the joy of doing it in another. I’m still here, still serving my community, just with a new purpose and a different kind of care.”
Alesha’s vision for the shop is as heartfelt as it is inclusive. She wants Hello Sunshine to feel like a space
that welcomes everyone, from grandmothers to moms to their granddaughters. Whether you’re shopping for a birthday, a milestone, or simply a small moment of joy, you’ll find pieces that feel personal and made with love.
“When you walk into Hello Sunshine, I want you to feel like you popped into your stylish bestie’s place, where the gifts are thoughtful and the vibe is always warm,” Alesha says.
Hello Sunshine reflects everything special about Bend: creativity, connection and a deep love for the local community. Alesha has made it a mission to promote Central Oregon artists and makers, so shopping here means discovering treasures you won’t find anywhere else. From small-batch self-care essentials to locally crafted accessories and more, Hello Sunshine is full of pieces that inspire smiles and spark conversation.
While Hello Sunshine has long been a favorite in the Old Mill District, Alesha is honored to carry its legacy into the future.
“This boutique has been a part of the community for years and I’m so honored to be its new owner,” she adds. “Huge thank you to the amazing former owner for trusting me with something so special.”
So next time you explore the Old Mill District, stop into Hello Sunshine and say hi to Alesha. Whether you leave with a new outfit, a handcrafted gift, or just a feel-good moment, chances are, you’ll walk out feeling a little brighter. That is because Hello Sunshine isn’t just a boutique; it’s a space built on connection, crafted with care and created to have something special for everyone who walks through the door.

VANILLA CELEBRATES 20 YEARS IN THE OMD
Owner-operator April Lawyer has evolved from world-class athlete to best-in-class retailer
This story is based on the podcast episode “April Lawyer: The Stories of Vanilla” from “The Circling Podcast with Adam Short.” The entire podcast can be found at the QR code here.
April Lawyer was raised in Big Bear Lake, California, a tight-knit mountain town where nature and community were integral parts of life.
"We were always outside,” April said. “Snowboarding, building jumps, selling treats out the window. It was a small town where you made your own fun, and I think that’s where I first learned how to be resourceful and creative."
These formative experiences not only revealed her business instinct but also her desire to connect with people, a trait that would resurface later in her retail career. Her love for the outdoors was encouraged
through free ski days at the local resort, which eventually ignited her passion for snowboarding.
A crucial turning point came when she met professional snowboarder Janna Meyen. Janna took April under her wing, mentoring her both personally and professionally. That relationship introduced April to the possibility of pursuing snowboarding at a higher level and gave her insight into the grit and determination required to thrive in a male-dominated sport.
ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS AND CHALLENGES
April eventually became a professional snowboarder and, later, a mountain biker. Her tenacity and athleticism stood out, culminating
in a groundbreaking moment at the 1997 Winter X Games, where she was the only female athlete to compete in both snowboarding and mountain biking.
“It wasn’t something I set out to prove,” April said. “I just loved both, and no one told me I couldn’t."
Despite the accolades, the career came with physical costs. A devastating crash during the 1999 X Games in Crested Butte left April with a serious head injury. The accident forced her to reconsider the risks and prompted a shift toward mountain biking, which she pursued exclusively for the rest of her athletic career. Over the next 11 years, April built strong relationships with major sports brands and was deeply involved in product development, sharpening her skills in branding, merchandising, and customer engagement.
FROM ATHLETE TO ENTREPRENEUR
April’s shift away from professional sports was gradual and thoughtful. A key moment occurred when a friend suffered a near-fatal crash. The incident led April to start thinking seriously about life after racing. She took a job at a friend’s boutique in Big Bear and discovered that retail offered a new outlet for her creativity and interpersonal skills. This role was pivotal; it provided a low-risk entry point into a new industry while still offering the adrenaline and challenge she craved.
In 2005, shortly after moving to Bend, April seized an opportunity to open her own boutique in the Old Mill District. She did so before even settling on a business name — Vanilla Urban Threads came to her shortly before opening. Initially, she deliberately distanced her store from her athletic background, wanting the boutique to stand on its own reputation.
"I didn’t want people to come into the store because I was a pro athlete,” April said. “I wanted them to come because they loved the experience and the product. That mattered more to me than anything else."
Her vision for Vanilla was rooted in authenticity, quality, and a sense of personal connection. She curated merchandise with a meticulous eye and built a shopping experience that emphasized community over commerce.
THE LEGACY OF VANILLA AND COMMUNITY ROOTS
Today, Vanilla Urban Threads is more than just a boutique, it’s a cultural fixture in Bend. April’s personal touch is evident in every aspect of the business, from product selection to customer service. She fosters a warm, welcoming atmosphere where relationships matter more than transactions. That ethos mirrors her experience as an athlete, where team dynamics and mutual respect were essential.
What makes April’s story compelling is her seamless blend of seemingly disparate worlds. She didn’t discard her past to build a new future; instead, she layered new experiences atop her existing foundation. Her story is about reinvention, resilience, and the power of community. It offers a poignant reminder that our identities can evolve without losing their core, and that sometimes the most fulfilling paths are the ones we least expect.
"Vanilla was never just about clothes,” April said. “It’s always been about connection, curating pieces that feel good, but also creating a space where people feel seen.
WARBY PARKER SET TO OPEN IN THE OLD MILL DISTRICT IN JULY
Eyewear retailer making first expansion in Oregon outside of the Portland metro area
National eyewear retailer Warby Parker is headed to the Old Mill District this summer.
A mission-driven retailer that specializes in affordable, accessible, and stylish eyewear, Warby Parker will move into 1,800 square feet of space in the heart of the Old Mill District, directly adjacent to J.Jill at 520 SW Powerhouse Drive, Suite 606.
Warby Parker’s Old Mill District location will offer eye exams as well as eyewear.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Warby Parker to the Old Mill District, introducing a new product category to our vibrant mix of retailers,” said Beau Eastes, Old Mill District Marketing Director. “As just the third Warby Parker location in Oregon and the first in the Pacific Northwest outside of traditional metro areas like Portland and Seattle, this is an exciting opportunity for our community to enjoy affordable and sophisticated eyewear.”
According to Eastes, Warby Parker could open its doors to the public as soon as July.
Founded as an online retailer in 2010, Warby Parker was born out of the idea that everyone deserves good vision and prescription glasses at the time were too expensive. It opened its first retail store in 2013, and today Warby Parker operates 287 stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Throughout the years, the Warby Parker brand has become known as much for its philanthropy as for selling stylish and affordable eyewear. For every pair of glasses or sunglasses they sell, for example, a pair of glasses is distributed to someone in need through its Buy a Pair, Give a Pair program. To date, the company has distributed more than 15 million glasses to people in need thanks to strategic partnerships with nonprofit organizations.
In addition, Warby Parker works with local organizations and government agencies to give free vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to school children. They call this the Pupils Project, and so far they’ve administered more than 350,000 screenings and 72,000 eye exams while providing 56,000-plus pairs of glasses to kids.
“Warby Parker’s commitment to giving back aligns so well with the values we try to uphold at the Old Mill District,” Eastes said. “Their initiatives reflect the kind of positive impact we strive to support within Central Oregon.”
The Old Mill District is a true staple of Bend, Oregon. This beautiful waterfront property along the Deschutes River is home to more than 60 places to shop, dine and explore. From home goods and apparel to spa retreats, fitness studios, Regal Cinemas, restaurants and more, there’s something in the Old Mill District for everyone.
An Old Mill District gift card is the perfect way to share that experience. Available in amounts from $10 to $500, gift cards can be used at every business in the district, including concert tickets at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater.
Whether celebrating a birthday, marking a milestone, or simply wanting to treat someone to something special, an Old Mill District gift card is a meaningful way to share a little piece of Bend. With so many ways to enjoy it, it’s the gift everyone will love.
Gift cards are available for purchase online at OldMillDistrict.com or in person at the Ticket Mill, located on the second floor above J. Jill.
Celebrate the arts the first Friday of every month in the Old Mill District
Come celebrate the arts in the Old Mill District the first Friday of the month with the district’s First Friday Art Walk.
The Old Mill District is home to four galleries and studios that represent more than 20 different artists and creatives. Amejko Artistry, Lubbesmeyer Art Studio & Gallery, The Stacks Art Studios & Galleries, and Tumalo Art Co. all showcase their art on First Friday, as do various retailers who bring in artists just for the event. Kara’s Kitchenware might have a local chocolatier, Confluence Fly Shop has been known to highlight the paintings of owner Tye Krueger, and Saxon’s Fine Jewelers often highlights special collections.
First Friday Art Walks are designed to bring together art lovers with the creatives behind the work. Additionally, participants can enjoy not only art from around Central Oregon, but participating shops and studios offer different wine samples compliments of Va Piano Vineyards Wine and snacks from Savory Spice. The carefully selected food and beverages complement the creative ambiance, enriching the experience as walkers explore the depths of the regional art on display. STEP UP & SOAR
A colorful mural transforms an Old Mill District stairway into a celebration of Bend's feathered friends
Some murals are meant to be admired from afar. Others invite you to step onto them, literally. That’s exactly the case with Birds of the River Trail, a vibrant, stair-spanning piece by Bend artist Evan Namkung, perched along the stairway between Francesca’s and Ben & Jerry’s in the Old Mill District. But there’s a twist. You won’t spot it while climbing the stairs. Instead, take a moment at the bottom and look back. The geometric, eye-catching design unfolds before you, revealing a trio of murals that highlight the winged wonders of the Deschutes River Trail.
“Like so many of us who live here, I’ve spent a lot of time running and walking the river trail and always enjoy the diversity of bird life that calls the Deschutes home,” Namkung says. “My art is heavily influenced by a deep appreciation of wildlife and the natural world, as well as a lifelong love and passion for street art.”
Armed with spray paint, hours of pre-design work, and an eye for architectural harmony, Namkung completed the mural in just four days. The piece transforms a functional space, a stairway most would otherwise rush past, into a layered and immersive work of art. His hope is to turn everyday public spaces into something magical and memorable.
Bria Holub, Event Manager for the Old Mill District, calls Namkung’s work “sunshine for your soul.”
A recommendation from Scalehouse Gallery led Holub and the district to Namkung’s dynamic style.
“His mural is like a kaleidoscope of colors that draws you into an artistic wonderland,” Holub says. “I anticipate visitors will love how it connects them to the natural beauty that surrounds us here in the Old Mill District.”
Namkung’s artistic style fuses street art with architectural influences, mixing bold colors with structural elements. The end result is pieces that stop you in your tracks, literally.
“Our goal is always to support the arts however we can,” Holub adds. “Evan’s work is the kind you’d hunt around town to see his latest creation. I encourage folks to seek out more of his murals throughout Bend.”
And if you’re up for a little art scavenger hunt, you can also find Namkung’s work gracing the downtown Bend parking garage and St. Vincent de Paul of Bend. Just keep your eyes peeled. You never know where one of his bold, nature-inspired pieces might land next.
Osprey sculpture honors Old Mill District founder Bill Smith WINGS OF LEGACY
They might not be the most well-known feature of the Old Mill District, but the osprey nesting platforms overlooking the Deschutes River were a favorite of Bill Smith, the visionary behind this thriving retail, entertainment, and recreation hub.
Designed by local artist Chris “Buffalo” Folsom, the 13-foot-wide artwork was years in the making, with Smith himself contributing to the vision before his passing in 2022. Smith wished they’d stick around year-round, always looking forward to their return in the spring. The osprey, uniquely depicted clutching two fish, highlights both the species’ impressive hunting skills and the abundance of the river.
A towering steel sculpture of an osprey clutching not one but two fish in its talons now graces the small pond on the north end of the district near Café Yumm! on SW Powerhouse Drive.
Titled “Bountiful,” the sculpture is a celebration of all the Deschutes River provides.
“I liked him a lot,” Folsom said of Smith. “And to have (his daughter) Marney call me up and ask me to do this was just the best. I’ve done a lot of different pieces, but it always feels good to hear someone say, ‘We like your work, can you do this for us?’”
Folsom first spoke with Smith 15 years ago about creating artwork for the Old Mill District, but other projects took priority. It wasn’t until 2023 when Marney Smith reached out that the vision finally became reality.
“We talked about Bill’s love for osprey, so that was kind of a no-brainer,” Folsom said. “As soon as she said it, a picture came into my head of what I wanted to do.”
Folsom was particularly drawn to the rare ability of the osprey to catch two fish at once, a skill that demanded an equally striking artistic treatment.
Stretching nearly 13 feet wide, the sculpture more than doubles the typical five-anda-half-foot wingspan of an osprey. Crafted from hundreds of pieces of welded steel, it weighs a staggering 550 pounds.
“The wingspan adds some interesting aspects to the sculpture that help make it supportable,” Folsom explained. “I like doing large items, but this is the perfect size, not too big, not too small.”
Folsom is no stranger to large-scale artwork. His past creations include the towering 27-foot mama bear at the Grizzly Road roundabout in Madras. Still, Bountiful holds special significance.
“I want people to be wowed, that’s the bottom line,” Folsom said. “The sculpture I did in Madras is off the beaten path, but this will be seen by millions of people over time. I really like that idea. I don’t think anyone can look at it and not be wowed by it.”

The team behind the Old Mill
District’s beautiful landscaping THANK YOU MILLSITE
If you’ve ever strolled through the Old Mill District and admired the lush lawns, vibrant flower beds, or perfectly pruned trees, you’ve seen Millsite’s magic at work.
Since 1996, Millsite Landscape Services has been helping shape Bend, first with the Old Mill District before growing into one of Central Oregon’s most respected commercial landscape companies. What began as a small crew keeping this historic area looking sharp has blossomed into a full-service outfit managing properties all across town, including the Hayden Homes Amphitheater.
Their team — 16 full-timers and a dozen more in the busy season — are the unsung heroes behind every green lawn, blooming planter, and clean walkway. And they do it all with sustainability in mind: smart irrigation systems, grasscycling, and reusing plant containers.
We’re beyond lucky to have them. Through snow, wind, and high desert heat, Millsite shows up, shovels in hand and smiles on faces, making our corner of the world a little more beautiful every day.
So here’s a heartfelt thank you to the crew at Millsite. Your work doesn’t just maintain landscapes, it builds a better Bend.
