Series directors Stacey L. Holman and Shayla Harris, noted, “throughout history, African Americans have created a dynamic community and culture that flourished beyond the color line. Making Black America celebrates the places and institutions that were built by and for Black people with hope, love, and sustained by joy.”
The series recounts the establishment of the Prince Hall Masons in 1775 through the formation of all-Black towns and business districts, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, destinations for leisure and the social media phenomenon of Black Twitter. Gates sits with noted scholars, politicians, cultural leaders, and old friends to discuss this world behind the color line and what it looks like today.
Making Black America: Through the Grapevine is a new four-part documentary series created by renowned scholar Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. that chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for Black people beyond the reach of the “White gaze” throughout the United States.
5OCTOBER 2022
Making Black America: Through the Grapevine, will premiere on Tuesday, October 4 at 8 PM on OETA, PBS.org, and the PBS Video app.
Over the course of four weekly episodes, Making Black America takes viewers into an extraordinary world that highlights Black people’s ability to collectively prosper, defy white supremacy, and define Blackness in ways that transformed America itself.
“For centuries, ‘the Grapevine’ has connected Black Americans in formal and informal networks not just as a way of communicating but of building and sustaining communities large and small,” said Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the program’s host, writer, and executive producer. “From churches to fraternal and sororal organizations to Black Twitter, this is the story of the making of Black America and how, in the making, a people did more than survive the onslaught of enslavement and segregation.
They redefined America and its cultural gifts to the world. All of us are grateful for the opportunity to explore this history and what it can teach us as we struggle to overcome the challenges of our times.”
Discover how a man born into slavery became one of the most influential voices for democracy in American history. Oscar®nominated filmmaker Stanley Nelson explores the role Douglass played in securing the right to freedom for African Americans.

Dia De Los Muertos
Becoming Frederick Douglass
From early Spanish explorers to the one man responsible for bringing Mexican restaurants to Oklahoma City, Back in Time is celebrating “Hispanic Oklahoma.”
Since then, many travelers from South and Central America have made Oklahoma their home. Immigrants arrived long before statehood looking for work, first as “Vaqueros” or cowboys, then building the railroads and in the coal mines. As Indian Territory opened up to settlement, it became an attractive destination for immigrants from around the world.
The Choctaw developed coal mines in southern Oklahoma and imported workers from many different places to work in the mines. In 1912, Rufino Rodriguez saved more than 150 men from a coal mine fire in the Number Five Shaft at Lehigh.
Luis Alvarado came to the state in 1937 and opened the first Mexican restaurant in Oklahoma City. El Charro was first, then it became El Charrito. Eventually, almost every Mexican restaurant in the city traced its beginning to Louis Alvarado.
The social and religious center of the Mexican community in Oklahoma City is the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, named for a Carmelite nun who was canonized in 1925; Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, or “The little flower of Jesus.” The Little Flower Church was founded by four priests fleeing persecution in Mexico who found a better life in Oklahoma City.
On the next Back in Time we learn about the vibrant and inspiring beginnings of Hispanic Oklahoma. Oklahoma was once a territory of Spain. In the 1600’s and early 1700’s Spanish adventurers explored parts of present Oklahoma. The route they took through Oklahoma became known as the “Great Spanish Road.” Entering the state near Eric, they traveled South towards Durant and then followed the Red River to Louisiana. Spanish priests, traders, and trappers made good use of the route.
BACK IN TIME HISPANIC OKLAHOMA
Thousands of Hispanic Oklahoma soldiers have served with distinction, like Manuel Perez Jr., who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for bravery under fire in World War II.
Back in Time: Hispanic Oklahoma premieres on Thursday, October 13 at 7 PM on OETA. This episode can be streamed for free at oeta.tv/backintime after its broadcast premiere.
