FEBRUARY 7 – One Night In Miami (2020)

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear OETA Odyssey Reader,

As you hold this month’s Odyssey, you’ll notice something different. It’s a little heavier and that’s because we’ve expanded. The new Odyssey has more information about the month’s major programming and more details about our local content. Whether you are watching on tv, on your phone, or on your computer, our goal is to ensure you have the resources you need to explore everything OETA has to offer.

As we move into February, we are proud to present a lineup that honors the past, celebrates the present, and looks toward the future. This month, OETA joins the nation in celebrating Black History Month with a powerful lineup that explores the profound impact of Black culture and history on the American experience.

We also invite you to explore stories closer to home. Our local production, Back in Time, will feature Oklahoma civil rights leaders like Clara Luper and Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, highlighting the vital role Oklahomans played in the national movement for justice.

Additionally, OETA will provide live coverage of Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt’s final State of the State address on February 2, 2026. We thank the Governor for his years of leadership and invite you to join us as he outlines his final vision for our state.

Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to provide the stories and education that strengthen our community. I hope you enjoy this month’s expanded Odyssey.

Sincerely,

VIEWER COMMENTS

I trust OETA for thoughtful, well-researched, unbiased programming, from Washington Week and MASTERPIECE to British mysteries, great performances, and reliable news.

OETA is a great station with excellent programming. I watch often, especially on Wednesdays.

OETA keeps getting better and better. I love Sunday night dramas, they keep me smiling and on the edge of my seat.

This February, OETA’s Black History Month programming highlights stories that examine power, culture, and the ongoing pursuit of justice in America. From landmark documentaries to intimate personal histories, the lineup connects national history with individual lives, offering context for where the country has been, and where it is still going.

At the center of the month is Black and Jewish America: An Interwoven History, a four-part series from Henry Louis Gates, Jr., airing Tuesdays, Feb. 3, 10, and 17. The series explores the complex relationship between Black and Jewish Americans, shaped by shared struggle, creative collaboration, and moments of tension. Through conversations with scholars, activists, and cultural figures, including Billy Crystal, Al Sharpton, and Anna Deavere Smith, the series traces a partnership that influenced civil rights, politics, and American popular culture.

Gates continues the conversation with new episodes of Finding Your Roots. On Feb. 3, Love & Basketball follows Brittney Griner and Chris Paul as they uncover the perseverance

in their family histories. Family Harmonies, airing Feb. 17, features Lizzo and Flea, whose ancestry spans continents and generations. On Feb. 24, filmmaker Spike Lee and Oklahoma native Kristin Chenoweth reflect on creativity, identity, and a sense of belonging.

Several programs spotlight individuals whose contributions have often been overlooked. American Masters: The Disappearance of Miss Scott (Feb. 10) revisits the career of Hazel Scott, a jazz virtuoso and early television star who challenged segregation. Sun Ra: Do the Impossible (Feb. 20) examines the life of the visionary musician and philosopher, while The Magic of Grace Bumbry (Feb. 20) traces the groundbreaking career of the opera star who rose to international acclaim despite systemic barriers.

History and accountability remain key themes throughout the month. American Experience: American Coup: Wilmington 1898 (Feb. 5) documents a suppressed chapter of racial violence and political overthrow. Back in Time: Civil Rights (Feb. 5) brings the story closer to home, highlighting Oklahoma leaders like Clara Luper, Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher, and Roscoe Dungee. Independent Lens: The Inquisitor (Feb. 23) profiles Barbara Jordan’s lasting impact on American politics.

On Feb. 17, I’M GOIN’ HOME tells a story rarely explored, the journey of an enslaved man to freedom on the Underground Railroad. The film follows his dangerous 400-mile escape from Senator Henry Clay’s Ashland Estate in Lexington, Kentucky, to Canada, while revealing the brutal realities, economics, and politics of slavery through the courage of those who helped him along the way.

The month concludes on Tuesday, Feb. 24, with Harriet Tubman: Vision of Freedom, which goes beyond the legend to reveal the inspiring woman who repeatedly risked her own life to liberate others from slavery. Born more than 200 years ago in Maryland, Tubman was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a Civil War scout, nurse, spy, and one of the greatest freedom fighters in American history.

Together, OETA’s Black History Month programming offers viewers a deeper understanding of the people, movements, and moments that continue to shape the nation.

Think Wednesday

At the center of the month is Nature: Parenthood, a four-part series narrated by David Attenborough, airing Wednesdays Feb. 4, 11, 18, and 25. Each episode follows the remarkable strategies animal parents use to help their young survive in demanding environments. Grasslands (Feb. 4) captures cheetahs training cubs in open plains, potter wasps building clay nurseries, and wild dog packs learning discipline amid predators. Freshwater (Feb. 11) highlights turtles racing seasonal rains, sandgrouse fathers ferrying water to chicks, and elephant families navigating drought. Oceans (Feb. 18) reveals rare marine parenting, from orcas teaching calves to hunt blue whales to octopus mothers guarding eggs in improvised shelters. Jungles (Feb. 25) concludes the series with hornbills, frogs, cassowaries, and primates adapting to dense habitats under increasing environmental pressure.

NOVA follows each week with science-driven storytelling. Can Dogs Talk? (Feb. 4) examines viral word-button communication through

the largest animal cognition study ever conducted. Mammal Origins (Feb. 11) traces how early mammal ancestors survived mass extinctions. Rain Bombs (Feb. 18) investigates violent atmospheric events threatening modern transportation. Stone Age Temple Mystery (Feb. 25) explores groundbreaking evidence at Göbekli Tepe that may reshape our understanding of early civilization.

Secrets of the Dead digs deeper into the past with detailed investigations. The Quest for Camelot and King Arthur’s Lost Kingdom revisit medieval texts and archaeological sites in Britain to separate legend from history. The Herculaneum Scrolls follows scientists using AI and particle physics to read 2,000-year-old papyri buried by Mount Vesuvius. Mozart’s Sister uncovers new evidence suggesting Maria Anna Mozart may have contributed to her brother’s early compositions. Hannibal in the Alps retraces the Carthaginian general’s perilous mountain crossing to pinpoint where history unfolded.

RON ROBERTS

At 80, rancher Ron Roberts discovered a new calling. While recovering from surgery, a gift of clay sparked an unexpected creative journey rooted in a lifetime of ranching.

In this February episode of Gallery America, Roberts transforms cowboy life into powerful, personal sculptures. Watch Gallery America: Ron Roberts: Cowboy Sculpture and experience Oklahoma art in the making.

COMING MARCH 22nd

DramaS SUNDAY

Get ready for an unforgettable March on MASTERPIECE! Sunday Dramas return with three spectacular series.

The Forsytes offers a bold, new reimagining from writer Debbie Horsfield (Poldark), chronicling the lives, loves, trials, and triumphs of a wealthy Victorian era stockbroking family. Among the stellar cast are Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood), Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era), Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark), Jack Davenport (The Morning Show), and Millie Gibson (Doctor Who).

The Count of Monte Cristo brings Alexandre Dumas’ epic revenge tale to life in a thrilling new adaptation, following Edmond Dantès as he navigates betrayal, imprisonment, and the quest for vengeance across 19th-century Europe. Leading the cast are Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & The Six), Jeremy Irons (The Borgias), Ana Girardot (The Returned), and Blake Ritson (The Crown), delivering a story of love, betrayal, and redemption that has captivated generations.

Call the Midwife returns with Season 15, setting its heartfelt stories in 1971 as the midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House face rapid medical advances, shifting social norms, and the rise of the Women’s Liberation Movement. From pioneering ultrasounds and epidurals to life-saving neonatal care, the series continues to blend compassion, resilience, and hope, anchored by beloved cast members.
