Households represent a large – and growing
– share of energy use in OECD countries. For
example, the residential sector consumes
about one-third of all the electricity and heat
generated. Total energy production across OECD countries is still dominated by fossil fuels; energy derived from renewable sources makes up only a small percentage of the total. Any comprehensive policy package that attempts to change the way we generate and use energy must therefore be based on an understanding of what drives household energy use.
