K.J. Lissant’s Fundamental Studies with High Internal Phase Ratio Emulsions and Incremental Advances and Refinements of this Technology Over the Past 50 Years …by Paul Thau

ntil the early 1970s, little attention was given to high internal phase ratio emulsions (often referred to as HIPEs). This was probably because few emulsifying agents known at that time had the capacity to produce and stabilize such emulsions. Shortly later, polymeric emulsifiers became available. It then became possible to prepare stable water-in-oil emulsions containing up to 95% internal phase. These emulsions were called high internal phase ratio emulsions. It had long been known that if a monodisperse system of rigid spheres is packed in the most advantageous manner into an emulsion, the spheres would occupy a little over 74% of the total volume of the system. Experience had shown that when conventional soap-type emulsifiers were used in attempts to prepare emulsions with over 70% internal phase, they usually inverted at about 74%. Lissant’s group at Petrolite Inc. found that it was possible to prepare emulsions with well over 90% aqueous internal phase that were relatively monodisperse.1-3 The droplets of these emulsions were not spherical. They must assume some transitional form between spheres and polyhedra. For this reason, they conducted a study of the restrictions placed on such systems by the pure geometry of the situation. For simplicity they first assumed that the droplets are truly monodisperse, that is, all droplets have equal volume. They also assumed that the specialty emulsifier essentially prevents coalescence. High internal phase ratio emulsions are defined as emulsions comprising greater than 75% by volume of aqueous internal phase.4 The droplets present in high internal phase ratio emulsions are deformed from the usual spherical shape into polyhedral shapes and are locked in place. The high internal phase ratio emulsions normally display unusual rheological properties, which are generally attributed to the existence of the polyhedral droplets. The main reason that classical water-in-oil emulsions were greasy and occlusive was because in most instances the classical formulation contained a high concentration of oil, wax, or petrolatum, plus a much lower concentration of water. The breakthrough with high internal phase ratio emulsions is that the aqueous concentration with the use of polymeric emulsifiers can be anywhere from 70% to 95%. (continued on Page 3)

Letter from the Chair

…Susanna Fernandes

he NYSCC is definitely like the month of March and coming in like a lion! Our “At Home Live” and intensive webinar series continue to be well received and provide relevant information for our members and product development community. “Formulating for Inclusion” provided keen insight from beauty suppliers, marketers, and dermatologists on the market opportunities and how to create products that make a difference for consumers of African ancestry. As panelist Stephanie Biagini of Mana Products noted, “Formulating for inclusion is everything, whether it is for hair or skin.” Then, Digital Age of Beauty provided more than five hours of on-demand content from analytic forecasters and technology innovators. During the live Q&A, with all the consumer trends being driven by new ingredients, everyone agreed cosmetic chemists have become rock stars and are invaluable in the formulation and product development process. March 8th is International Women’s Day, and the theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which highlights the importance of challenging biases and misconceptions in the interest of creating a more inclusive and gender-equal world. This theme complements and underscores the NYSCC’s theme this year of “Embracing Beauty: What Makes Us Different, Makes Us Beautiful.” I am excited about the upcoming Women in Science webinar this month, which will celebrate and recognize the achievements of trailblazers in our industry. We end the month with a class on Trends and Formulation in Gentle Cleansing, as more modern consumers seek new and improved ways to optimize their cleansing routines. Looking ahead, we are busy finalizing the rest of our monthly programs, and ask you to stay tuned for the return of our Annual Golf Outing in July! In addition, Suppliers’ Day is confirmed for November 10-11, 2021 at the Javits Center in New York, with a virtual day on November 12th. As announced, the event will be an enhanced collaboration with National SCC as well as sister chapters across the country. Inside this issue, check out a sneak peek on an exciting Career Day sponsored by SCC as well as more for up-and-coming chemists that will be offered during our Week of Beauty. I am also so appreciative of the initial support I have received from the executive board and this chapter’s amazing committee members and volunteers. My first quarter as Chair has been exhilarating, and to already be able to witness some of our initiatives and goals come to fruition this early in my tenure, is so gratifying. We aren’t stopping in providing quality education and engagement tools to reach and bolster our members. Be on the lookout for more information on our very own podcast and other novel programs. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me with ways that the NYSCC can better serve you and the beauty and personal care community. Please stay safe and be well.

K.J. Lissant’s Fundamental Studies with High Internal Phase Ratio Emulsions and Incremental Advances and Refinements of this Technology (continued from Page 1) The feasibility of formulating stable, low viscosity water-in-oil lotions with minimum oil phase content that exhibit desirable aesthetic properties came into closer focus during the 1980s. This resulted from the confluence of new developments, particularly the introduction of low HLB polymeric emulsifiers, specialty silicone emulsifiers, and methodologies to improve stability of these waterin-oil emulsions. Among these specialty polymeric emulsifiers are: cetyl dimethicone copolyol, PEG-30 dipolyhydroxystearate, and polyglyceryl oleate. Researchers also disclosed that high internal phase ratio emulsions with increased stability can be obtained by the inclusion of appropriate levels of electrolytes such as magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, or calcium chloride at concentrations from 0.2 to 1.5%, depending upon the composition of the specific high internal phase ratio emulsion.

Concluding Remarks

Starting with the pioneering work of K.J. Lissant, incremental technical and scientific advances over the past 50 years have contributed to providing innovative paths to resolve the long soughtafter challenge of formulating low-viscosity, stable, and aesthetic water-in-oil lotions with high water content. These varied high internal phase ratio emulsion compositions offer numerous options to formulate an innovative range of cosmetic formulations.
