Feeling the Vibes

Sweet, sweet summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest, and this issue sure is vibing with that bright and happy energy. Chock-full of brand-new gems to be explored and quintessential events to be experienced, plus goods, gear, and newsy notes to be examined, it’s an ode to summer fun. Start your exploration with the gems that beckon from our own backyard, as we highlight some new stops and favorite haunts to discover on Lakes Union and Washington in the feature found on pages 48-53. We also tackle the "snackle" box trend beginning on page 54, giving it our own Northwest spin with recs on stellar picnic provisions made by local purveyors.

Once you’ve packed that picnic, make way for any of the summertime events found in Anchors Aweigh (pages 18-19); cast out a line to do some fishing (Mark Yuasa has your salmon season details on page 64); or, voyage to the San Juan Islands to check out the updates to Roche Harbor Resort that Jack Riley details on pages 60-61. And of course, nothing quite says summer in Seattle like Seafair, which turns 75 this year with a big birthday bash like none other; get all the details on page 21, mark your calendars, and make the most of this most glorious season.

Enjoy!

Seafair at 75: Still Cruisin’ After All These Years

Before Amazon, Microsoft, grunge, and Starbucks—even before the Space Needle—Seattle had Seafair. Next month, 75 years after it started in 1950, the weeks-long summer celebration of fast boats, faster jet planes, and good times roars back again as the Emerald City’s premier traveling block party, with something fun for everyone.

This year, Seafair returns with the revival of its original jaunty logo from 1950, only updated as "Seafair75" in this iteration. All the festival favorites will be back, including the July 4 fireworks show at Gas Works Park; the Alaska Airlines flight attendant drill team performance at the Torchlight Parade (July 27); U.S. and Canadian military vessel tours at Seattle Fleet Week (July 29-Aug. 4); and, of course, the big weekend (August 2-4), featuring the Gold Cup H1 Unlimited hydroplane races and the jaw-dropping U.S. Navy Blue Angels air show.

Continuing an almost unbroken string of summer festival parties in Seattle (minus the 2020-2021 Covid hiatus), Seafair75 will include 30 community events and neighborhood parades over the next two months, reaching more than 2 million people throughout the Puget Sound region. To help put on this mammoth event, nearly 3,000 volunteers will help out, including members of the Seafair Boat Club, the Seafair Clowns, the Seafair Commodores, and the Alki-invading Seafair Pirates (yes, they ARRR! coming).

During Seafair weekend, the viewing areas on Lake Washington, as well as Genessee Park, will feature live music, beer gardens, an array of food truck options, and dozens of family-friendly activities. One popular maritime event that began in 2019 is the J-Hydro race, where junior boaters (between ages 9 and 16) are allowed to race miniature versions of the hydro boats, measuring about 9’ long and having a top speed of about 40 miles per hour, using 13.2-cubic-inch OMC or Mercury outboards.

Boating enthusiasts will be able to hear the roar, once again, of the classic thunderboats, originally made with post-war military surplus

aircraft engines, as they race in exhibition heats. Fans can see the legendary boats in action, like the Slo-Mo-Shun IV hydro that set a then-record straightaway speed of 160 mph at the 1950 Seafair. Today’s unlimited H1 hydros, like the Miss HomeStreet, now regularly top 220 mph in Gold Cup races.

Today’s Seafair is a large and sprawling event, but the very first ones were, in some ways, even larger, with a wider variety of events scheduled throughout the region. In the 1950s and ’60s, the summer festival highlighted not only the rooster-tailing thunderboats, but also lifeboat races, steamboat races, tugboat tugs-of-war, and a 25-mile bicycle race around Lake Sammamish. At the then-new 5,200-seat Green Lake Aqua Theater, the Aqua Follies presented waterskiing, high diving, and underwater dancing competitions. Other activities held in past years included a Mardi Gras parade in the Central District, a Chinese dragon parade in the International District, Scottish Highland Games in West Seattle, a husband-calling contest at Seward Park, an operetta performance of “The Desert Song” in Volunteer Park, and even a ritual burning of a ship in Elliott Bay.

Initially planned as a celebration of Seattle’s centennial anniversary for 1951, Seafair was an expanded form of the city’s early summer Potlatch celebrations that had been held, off-and-on, since 1911. The organizing team, known as the Seattle Salts, finished their initial Seafair arrangements more quickly than expected, so they were able to kick off the first 10-day festival a year early, in 1950. The name Seafair was determined after a suggestion was made by the 11-year-old son of early planner Guy Williams.

This year’s Seafair75 may not have high-diving, husband-calling, or burning steamships, but the list of events is still literally too long to enumerate here. For more information on the massive schedule, viewing areas, admission-based events, and Log Boom tie-ups on Lake Washington, visit: seafair.org.

Maritimo Hires Local Staff for North American Sales, Releases ‘Black Edition’ Updates

Aussie motoryacht builder Maritimo is further cementing its hold on the domestic luxury market with the addition of two highly respected new sales associates from the Pacific Northwest, Mark Mansfield and Tom Jagucki, to represent the entire North American market. In addition, Maritimo is debuting a Black Edition of its popular cruiser lines.

Both Mansfield and Jagucki are veteran boaters who have decades of experience in the marine industry. Their Northwest location indicates a renewed emphasis on Seattle as a key beachhead for further expansion of the Australian company into North America. Seattle-based Mansfield joins Maritimo Americas as a factory sales specialist. Beginning his boating industry career in the late 1980s, he has held senior sales and management positions at several major yacht manufacturers.

“Maritimo’s boats are ideal for the Pacific Northwest,” Mansfield said. “We do a lot of destination cruising out here, going up to Canada, cruising through the Islands, even making the journey up to Alaska, and the boats are really well designed for this type of cruising. There are a lot of deadheads, so the upper helm on the M-Series provides a perfect perch for spotting potential hazards in the water, and the protection from the weather provided by the enclosed flybridge is great for late-season cruising.”

Meanwhile, Jagucki, a long-time Maritimo customer service rep and company captain, is now customer service manager for Maritimo Americas. In fact, he was responsible for the first-ever sale of a Maritimo yacht in the U.S. “Our owners are real boaters,” he said.

“They do a lot of their own maintenance, so making sure they’re super comfortable with everything is key. And they know that if they ever have an issue, they can give me a call and we’ll work through it together.”

“I’ve known Mark and Tom for a long time, and I can say with confidence they’re the best of the best in their respective fields,” said Keith Teynor, managing partner for Maritimo Americas. “As we continue to expand our footprint in the Americas, their intimate knowledge of our boats and our customers will be invaluable.”

Maritimo celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and founder Bill Barry-Cotter, who also founded Mariner and Riviera boat lines, has spent close to 60 years in the luxury boat-building business Down Under. Maritimo currently offers three distinct long-range yacht series: the M-Series Flybridge, the S-Series Sedan, and the Offshore Series.

The Black Edition updates were first seen in the M75 model that was released last month at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in Queensland, Australia. Improvements of the S50, S60, M55, M60, M600, and Offshore models include a low-profile dash in the enclosed flybridge helms, which have been redesigned with three multifunction engine screens.

Other new features include fully electric helm seats, greater galley storage space, an enlarged transom island separating the aft swim platform from the cockpit, a lazarette access door, a redesigned sink and barbecue station for the cockpit wet bar, and more luxurious lounge seating options.

The new Black Editions will debut is the U.S. at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) in October. For more details, go to: maritimoamericas.com

[ PUMP OUT THE JAM ]

RBAW to Provide Free Mobile Pump-Out Stations Under New Three-Year Program

The Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW) is celebrating the award of two Clean Vessel Act (CVA) grants that will help pay for free mobile boat sewage pump-out services in three locations across Puget Sound and pay for the construction of a fourth pump-out vessel.

The federal CVA grants, issued through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and administered by Washington State Parks, will help fund the operation of three West Sound pump-out sites on Liberty Bay in Poulsbo, Eagle Harbor in Bainbridge Island, and Blake Island State Marine Park. The program will run over the course of three years, covering about 48 weekend days of operation from Memorial Day through the end of October.

RBAW said it will use a third-party, mobile pump-out provider to provide the service. This grant will pay for 75 percent of the costs of the pump-outs, leaving RBAW to secure the 25 percent match funds. “We are actively seeking support from West Sound municipalities, foundations, and others to help us raise these match dollars,” RBAW said.

In addition, the CVA money will be used to build a new pump-out vessel that will be used in a Puget Sound location that has yet to be determined. RBAW estimated that the new vessel will take about a year to construct. The groups said it will pursue a 2025 CVA grant to provide free pump-outs with this new vessel once it is completed. No RBAW match funds, however, will be required for the building of the new mobile pump-out vessel.

RBAW said it has long supported augmentations to the CVA program, setting up lobbying efforts to promote it and prevent pollution from entering Puget Sound waters. In the 2022-23 legislative session, RBAW formed a coalition with the State Parks Boating Program to carve out $1.8 million from the state’s 2023-25 Capital Budget for increased recreational and commercial pump-out capabilities in the Sound.

Any public, private, or tribal entity that owns or operates a recreational boating facility, such as a marina, floating barge, or dock, may be eligible for grant funding under CVA to build, renovate, operate, and/or maintain a sewage disposal system, RBAW added. CVA-funded facilities must be open to the public with full and reasonable access during normal business hours, and boating facilities may not charge more than $5 per pump-out.

The CVA grants can reimburse up to 75 percent of the costs of managing stationary and portable pump-outs, portable toilet dump stations, floating restrooms and pump-out boats that are used solely by recreational boaters. These costs include the purchase of new equipment or the renovation of existing equipment, including pumps, fittings, lift stations, on-site holding tanks, pier or dock modifications, signs, permits and other miscellaneous equipment.

A separate five-year operation and maintenance grant is available to sustain a pump-out facility, providing an annual reimbursement for up to 75 percent of the cost of replacement parts, repairs, sewage disposal and documented hours for staff labor. For more details on RBAW’s plans for implementing these CVA grants, go to: rbaw.org; or become a member for a small yearly fee to receive insider info ahead of the general public.

ARRIVALS

Greenline 48 Fly Hybrid

The flagship of the Greenline Yachts line, available at Ocean Pacific Yachts, the 48 Fly Hybrid takes green boating to a completely new, luxurious level (and even boasts a tax-friendly perk, too).

40
[
JUNE 2024 ]

In an era where hybrid-electric propulsion is becoming the norm, yacht builders no longer have to skimp on opulent accommodations in the name of green benefits.

The new Greenline 48 flybridge, for example, is just as luxurious as any other premium diesel vessel, but it operates on about a half of the energy needed to power conventional yachts of its size.

The yacht can be operated using a combination of solar-and-lithium battery power via nearly silent, exhaust-free electric engines, but it also comes with twin diesel engines for charging or when higher speeds are desired. The inline diesel electric hybrid motors eliminate the need for a generator, as well as save fuel and reduce maintenance costs. (It only takes an hour and half in diesel mode to fully recharge the battery banks so you can stay off the grid for days at a time.)

With a layout created by J&J Design, the Greenline 48 can provide entertainment and gathering spaces for up to eight guests and has both three-cabin and four-cabin configuration options. The large, airy cockpit provides unobstructed views aft, but is still covered by the overhanging upper deck to shield from the sun. A forward-facing bench seat on the transom and a central wooden table creates a conversation space in the adjacent galley, accessible via a flip-up window. Covered side decks provide easy access to the foredeck’s ample sunpad.

Inside the salon, guests are treated to panoramic views with plenty of natural light and plush seating portside, as the U-shaped dinette settee and sofa are situated opposite, behind the helm chair. Aft of the salon, the galley is equipped with the latest home appliances and has an open design that allows meals to be served quickly to the adjacent salon or cockpit dining areas.

The flybridge is completely open to the elements, providing spectacular views, but also can be fitted with a Bimini or solar hardtop. Entertainment features include a wet bar, a barbecue grill, a U-shaped settee-and-table combo, and another sunpad aft to starboard. Full upper helm controls are located to port and a 2.2-kilowatt array of solar panels is situated on the forward roof to charge the batteries for the electric motors and for all other electrical equipment.

Down below, the owner’s cabin at the bow contains two double beds that can be repositioned into a single queen-sized berth, as well as its own head and

separate stand-up shower. Light and ventilation is supplied from three opening hatches. Amidships, the two guest cabins each have twin single side by side berths and their own en suite heads. An optional skipper’s cabin, with a single berth and head, can be situated under the transom at the stern.

The twin diesel engines are available in 250-, 320-, 370-, or 440-hp shaft-drive systems, which can produce top speeds of between 18 and 29 knots and have a range of 1,000 nautical miles at 7 knots.

The two whisper-quiet electric 25-kilowatt motors produce a 7-knot cruising speed and 8.5-knot top speed when used on their own, with a range of up to 30-40 nautical miles with optional additional battery packs. Propulsion modes are controlled at the helm by simply pushing a button

Those interested in purchasing a Greenline 48 should get to know the recent state provision that eliminates the Washington State sales tax for hybrid-electric vehicles. In King County, for instance, the current sales tax rate is 10.35%, meaning the potential savings on buying a “green” boat just got a lot more attractive.

2022 Maritimo M64

With modernist interiors and top-of-the-line features, this Maritimo M64, on offer from Seattle Yachts, packs in a full array of entertaining spaces.

42
[
JUNE 2024 ]

Looking like it was just launched yesterday, this 2022 Maritimo M64 beauty was created for maximum guest entertainment with premium, modernist interiors that feature walnut veneers, Karndean flooring, and carpeting. The Duchess comes with three cabins, a galley that is tailor-made for gourmet cooking, and an especially large flybridge that provides panoramic viewing.

The aft cockpit features a Euro transom with gently curved, forward-facing, upholstered bench seating, teak flooring, and lazarette access. The hydraulic swim platform also includes a parking area for a Williams SportJet 395 tender. With glass bi-fold doors separating the cockpit from the salon, the galley can be opened entirely to let in fresh air. A large galley island with a Corian countertop provides a location for casual socializing during meal prep. Several Miele appliances, including a domestic-sized refrigerator/freezer, a four-burner cooktop, dishwasher, and convection/ microwave, amply appoint the galley.

With the helm located up on the flybridge, the entire forward part of the salon is dedicated to entertainment, and made even larger by the generous, nearly 19’ beam.

An L-shaped settee and fold-out dinette table sits forward to port under the slanted windows that provide excellent views of the spacious foredeck sunpad area. A leather sofa and two ottomans face opposite, creating a large social gathering space.

A full wet bar, lined with varnished timber and stocked with an ice maker, includes room for bottle and glass storage.

An interior floating staircase to the port side of the galley leads to the flybridge that can be fully enclosed or open to the rear deck, depending on the weather. The ergonomic dash at the helm includes two separate captain’s chairs, twin Garmin 22” screens, GPS Map 8612, an AIS 800 bundle with GA38 antenna, and a Fantom 54 open array radar. Other controls include Twin Disc EJS BP bow and stern thrusters and an Express Position System (EPS) station.

The partially covered flybridge deck, cantilevered over the cockpit, is lined with U-shaped bench seating with ample backrest cushioning along the upper rail. The space includes an entertainment center, a wet bar, a large dinette area with a teak table, and a wide, vinyl-upholstered sofa to starboard, aft of helm. The hardtop also includes an electric sunroof. Aft of the flybridge bench seating are six rocket-launcher rod holders along the rail. The bench seats can also be angled upwards to form two small sunpads.

Staterooms below feature a full-beam owner’s suite with a king-sized island berth, hull windows and opening portholes, a day lounge, and an en suite head and shower. The forward cabin also has an island berth and access to the guest head and shower that’s shared with the VIP cabin that has two convertible twin berths.

In her two years of use, Duchess has had a few upgrades, such as 40” TVs in the master cabin and salon, an Apollo entertainment system with Bose speakers, a soft furnishings package, a stainless-steel cockpit barbecue, and a teak cockpit table. The twin Caterpillar C12.9 1,000-hp engines were also upgraded, with twin disc gears and Nibral five-bladed propellers. Specs & Info

To starboard is a navigator’s workstation area, forward of a triangular table and another L-shaped settee with blue-striped upholstery that matches the two swiveling helm chairs. Aft of the flybridge seating area is the boat deck with a hydraulic crane and chocks for a Boston Whaler tender. A custom-made, curved Bimini covers the seating and command bridge areas.

Powering the Janet Ann through the waves are twin MAN D2688 LE 401’s, producing 600 hp each, both of which have about 1,200 hours of use since 1999. New zincs were installed in 2021 plus the two Osborne, four-blade props made of bronze.

TAKE

Summer is here and the hometown waters are calling with a wealth of new gems and seasonal highlights waiting to be discovered along the scenic shorelines of Lakes Union and Washington.

LAKES

49

Seattle is a city renowned for its captivating blend of urban allure and natural beauty. At the heart of this unique juxtaposition are two shimmering gems cherished by locals and visitors alike—Lakes Union and Washington. Conveniently dotted with many marinas, they beckon to boaters 365 days a year, but come summertime, man, do these watery jewels take on a little extra sparkle. The dock-and-dine spots throw open their doors, cruising parties converge on the lapping waters, seaplanes dive down from overhead, and sunbathers rejoice and repine on boats’ bows. It’s the hometown waters' time to shine, and even if you’ve traversed them for years, this summer provides some gleaming new opportunities, plus buzzy updates from a few favorite haunts that are ripe for the taking—sip, savor, paddle, and power your way with our guide.

LAKE UNION

[ BITES ON THE BOW ]

From Renee Erickson’s venerated Westward to the quintessential establishments of Duke’s Seafood and Ivar’s Salmon House, Lake Union is awash in delicious and delectable bites. All three of the aforementioned eateries offer dock-n’-dine amenities, as well as expansive patios for enjoying your fare. You can also take it to go, something that Bowriders, located next door to Westward near the base of the University Bridge, has made especially easy to do. Order online via their website, then their new tracking system will notify you when it's time to nose up to their designated dock to receive your food delivery from a friendly team member. (When it comes to ordering, we heartily recommend the summery tequilamarinated shrimp tacos or the fan favorite lamb sliders that often pop up on the specials menu.) Hankering for some fish n’ ships? Head over to South Lake Union, where the 100 Pound Clam, the sister restaurant to White Swan Public House, has now opened up shop for the season, shelling out fried fish, chowder, and seasonal faves like

charred corn from their walk-up window. Enjoy your choice on their sunny deck, which overlooks the developing action at Lake Union Piers. More info: westwardseattle.com; dukesseafood. com; ivars.com/salmon-house; bowridersgrill.com; 100poundclam.com

[ POUR IT ON ]

Speaking of Lake Union Piers, prepare to whet your whistle at The Cove by summer’s end. To be located in the same complex as the offices for Chuck Hovey and Silver Seas Yachts, as well as mere steps from Hampton Yacht Group and Worth Avenue Yachts, The Cove will offer wine from the Seattle-based Ackley Brands’ impressive portfolio—which includes Montifore Estate, Cataclysm Wine Co., and Borealis Vintners—as well as craft beer options from their newest acquisition, Mac and Jack’s Brewing. Sate your thirst until then at Tapster, a self-serve tasting room located just steps off the lake across Valley Street in South Lake Union. Fill up your own

glass and sample from the rotating arrays of beers, hard ciders, and seltzers, then park yourself on the patio or embrace your inner child by snagging one of the ceiling-mounted swing seats. More info: ackleybrands.com; tapstertastingroom.com

[ HISTORY IN THE MAKING ]

The organization that lovingly cares for Tordenskjold, Arthur Foss, and the Lightship No. 83 SWIFTSURE that all stand tall outside of MOHAI, the Northwest Seaport is celebrating its 60th anniversary in June with a slew of events in SLU. Pay homage to local maritime history by taking part in a community chantey sing at Lake Union Park on June 14th, or mosey on by the Classic Workboat Show set for the weekend of June 15th-16th to see workboats old and new and enjoy tours of the historic ships at the wharf. You can also hop aboard the Arthur Foss later in the summer as the organization’s popular Tugboat Happy Hours resume for the season on July 9th. More info: nwseaport.org/60th-anniversary-events.html

[ ON THE WAY, IN PORTAGE BAY ]

Nestled in the waterways that connect the two lakes, an old standby, Agua Verde Cafe & Paddle Club, is offering up refreshed summertime vibes from their Marina Cantina, which is only accessible to those in the know from the water (you can walk there from the public kayak dock near Boat Street Marina, or dock at the free boat slips at the main cafe). Open seasonally from May-September, and offering Tex-Mex fare like chips and salsa, burritos, and tacos alongside a full bar menu, this pavilion area provides a welcome respite after a paddle. (Speaking of paddling, it’s also well worth checking out the Paddle Club’s Kayak Tours of the area. The sunrise or sunset options are sure winners, and the full moon night trip is one for the bucket list!) More info: aguaverdecafe.com/marinacantina; aguaverdepaddleclub.com/ tours-classes/

LAKE WASHINGTON

[ GOING TO THE DAWGS ]

The state’s second largest and the largest lake in King County, Lake Washington provides ample opportunities and well, curiosities, for boaters: Marvel at the majestic homes in Medina or on Mercer Island (rumor has it that you can still spy the T. Rex fossil in Nathan Myrvhold’s Medina abode!) or spy someone sunning in their birthday suit at Denny Blaine Park’s infamous nude beach. Coming from Lake Union, you could easily start with the lapping waters situated near the university campus. Spy water birds, beavers, frogs, and gorgeous flora and fauna in the inlets of Union Bay and around Foster Island, take part in a preseason “sailgate” by the football stadium, and in a new development, cruise on by the ASUW Shell House as it begins transforming into a museum and events space. And while the famous home of the “Boys in the Boat” is offi-

cially closed for construction until 2026, there still will be infrequent tours of the space if and when construction allows, coupled with the UW’s already popular Guided Tours of the Conibear Shellhouse; keep an eye on their site and perhaps gather some insider intel for us all. More info: washingtonrowing.com/history/tours/

[ DOCK & DINE ]

Located at the base of the Hyatt Regency Lake Washington at Seattle’s Southport, near the Boeing Renton factory, the pop-up restaurant and bar Dock & Drink pretty much has it all: standout burgers, refreshing brews, delicious cocktails, and breathtaking views, all enjoyed from their dockside terrace situated next to the boardwalk. Only open during the summer months, the eatery offers complimentary moorage for 3 hours, plenty of time to while away a sunny afternoon.

52

Plus, this year marks the debut of the Dockside Market next door that will offer grab-n-go snacks and essential items like sunscreen, ice, and hats. Here you can also rent paddleboards to launch from the small beach in front of the hotel. You can’t talk about good eats and not mention the culinary hub that is the Kirkland waterfront near Carillon Point. You can tie up to the 175-foot-long dock in front of The Beach House to satisfy your super-sized sandwich craving, or indulge in the truly splendiferous setting of Como, the Italian-themed eatery in the Woodmark Hotel that exudes true Lombardy vibes. Come the summer months, Como ups the ante by offering diners pre-or post-dinner cruises aboard the Como Boat, a 1951 22’ Shepherd stunner that comes complete with a captain to spirit around the sites as you sip some bubbly. (These slots fill fast, be sure to reserve your jaunt ahead of time!). More info: dockanddrink.com; beachhouserestaurants.com; comousa.com; comoboatusa.com

[ THE RACE IS ON ]

One might not immediately think of sailboat racing when it comes to the lake, but Lake Washington plays host to one of the more thrilling series of the summer: Corinthian Yacht Club’s Lake Solstice & Summer Evening sailboat races that take place every Tuesday and Wednesday off Leschi and culminate in the Moonlight Race. To be held August 10th this year, this beloved event made a recent return after a long hiatus and has quickly become a summer classic; it’s well worth a watch, or even participating should you wish it. Kirkland Sailing Club also offers Friday night fodder with their KSSS Summer Racing Series, and both the Renton Sailing Center and Mount Baker Rowing and Sailing Center recently opened up their summer sailboat lesson calendars—fair winds! JACK RILEY & ROCHE HARBOR RESORT

Island Life

Stay and play: JACK RILEY of ROCHE HARBOR RESORT reports on the latest developments at the San Juan Island enduring haven, from new cottage-style accommodations to the long-awaited reopening of the Afterglow Spa.

Roche Harbor Resort & Marina for generations has held a dear place in the hearts of boaters who cruise Northwest waters, and heading into the cruising season for 2024, there’s many reasons to visit this seaside village. The feeling of marina hospitality begins upon reaching your slip, as the top-notch marina staff catch lines and assist with the docking process. Next, they will aid in getting your vessel plugged into power, and then it’s time to relax and enjoy island life! Now, more than ever, Roche Harbor is ready to offer the ultimate in seaside relaxation and amenities.

Staying in Roche Harbor Marina is not just being on a dock surrounded by a community of friendly boaters, it’s about escaping the worries of the real world and transporting to a mental state of serenity, enjoying what matters most in life: time well spent with family and friends. There is no shortage of activities to take part in, resort amenities to enjoy, and a colorful past to explore. Roche Harbor is known for its historic roots on San Juan Island, originally as a lime quarry operation under John McMillin, and more recently as the boating and resort destination it is today, pioneered by the Tarte family.

Those familiar with Roche Harbor through past decades have seen the resort grow and develop, while still maintaining the historic charm that provides such a unique sense of place like nothing else. Not only can one moor in the marina, but there are a wide variety of land-based accommodations such as the historic Hotel De Haro, luxurious Quarryman Hall Suites, and Historic Cottages, which were originally homes for workers of the Roche Harbor Lime & Cement Company over 100 years ago. (One of the Cottages stands out as it is bright red among the white cottages—it was the schoolhouse for youth of Roche Harbor in the 1800s.) It’s not uncommon for boaters to leave the boat moored in a slip and opt for a stay in one of the lodging accommodations in Roche, and new for 2024, there is more to be thrilled about with the addition of four brand new cottages on the lawn.

It's hard to miss the vast green space of lawn by the shore of Roche Harbor, a great place for activities with kids and hosting large catered dinners (Rendezvous guests will be familiar with this spot!). Historic images dating back to the 19th century show that this space was originally part of the village cottages, as there were four rows of homes, opposed to the two rows that existed during the resort era of Roche Harbor. The cottages are a favorite land-based accommodation for boaters, as they each have multiple bedrooms, a kitchen, and living/dining space, not to mention an outdoor firepit and grill with amazing views of the harbor and sunset. Plus, there is a dock that extends from the lawn for boaters to tie up with tenders—very convenient to get to and from one’s boat!

The four new cottages are in front and to the side of the previous front row of cottages and have minimal impact on the view and open space. They are two-bedroom/one-bathroom units, with a kitchen and living/dining space, and feature air conditioning. Given their location as the foremost cottages in the village, these new accommodations have a great view of the

marina, and are expected to be available early this month.

Some boaters have been coming to Roche Harbor for decades, others for a few years, and there are those that have yet to visit this idyllic Pacific Northwest destination. For those that have been coming year after year, the Afterglow Spa in Roche Harbor rings familiar, though it was unfortunately closed for the past three years. Boaters looking to relax and rejuvenate will be glad to know that the Afterglow Spa is open again, with completely new treatments, products, and offerings. (It is even led by a talented spa professional who originally discovered Roche when visiting via boat with her husband.)

Afterglow Spa is an intimate space to unwind and connect. Located in the heart of the Roche Harbor village, it offers an enticing collection of spa experiences that incorporate the beauty and wellness of West Coast waters. Alongside traditional massages and facials, Afterglow Spa has curated the exclusive Afterglow OnBoard Massage, where your therapist will do your treatment in the privacy of your vessel. This massage includes all the comforts of the spa, as a deluxe portable massage table is utilized, as well as spa linens, audio, and wellness products. Also created with boaters in mind is the Rendezvous Recovery treatment. Drinks happen and we understand! This 90-minute experience is targeted towards feeling better if you happen to wake up tired after a long night of fun, and it includes hydration, liver support, eucalyptus steam, and a detoxifying massage. There are many other enticing treatments, including oceanic mineral hydrotherapy or virtually guided indoor cold immersion.

Whether it’s to relax, spend time with the ones you love, or live the high life like John Wayne (seriously, he was well-known to enjoy visiting Roche by sea), boating to Roche Harbor is an experience unlike any other. It is a place to make memories that last a lifetime and there has never been a better time to get excited for the multitude of amenities and activities waiting to be explored upon docking.

>> ABOUT THE EXPERT: I grew up in Seattle, but have been coming to San Juan Island every summer of my life, typically for the 4th of July festivities or the county fair. I was lucky enough to have grandparents that introduced me to life on the water and the wonderful world of boating, fishing, crabbing, etc. on their 34' Prowler and little Boston Whaler tender. After working at Roche Harbor as a dockhand during college, island life had captured my heart and I was lucky enough to be hired as a member of the accounting department after graduation. As time progressed, I discovered a passion for photography, which led to becoming involved in my current role in marketing at Roche Harbor Resort. I'm looking forward to seeing many familiar faces this upcoming cruising season and am excited to welcome boaters old and new to the friendly waters of Roche Harbor. TIGHT LINES

One Fish, Two Fish...

Rivers, lakes, and ocean fish: MARK YUASA outlines the promising prospects for summer salmon in both the salt and freshwater.

The summer salmon fisheries are set for launch, and there are some decent early-season freshwater and saltwater choices when it comes to catching a Chinook, sockeye, or coho.

Rivers & Lakes

Plenty of hype is centered around sockeye salmon where, for the second year in a row, a robust Baker River return of 56,750—up dramatically from 31,296 in 2023 and an actual record return of around 65,000—should generate lights out action. (Just for comparisons, the 2024 Baker sockeye forecast is up 57% over the recent 10-year average.)

Make plans to fish the Skagit River from Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Bridge to the Dalles Bridge at Concrete from June 16-July 15, with a four-sockeye-only daily limit. The river fishery will be highly reliant on water flow and glacial runoff. (If we encounter a hot early summer, then expect the water to be high and murky, which can hinder sockeye prospects.) Baker Lake opens July 6 and runs until August 31 with a four-sockeye daily limit; each angler aboard a vessel may deploy salmon angling gear until the daily limit for all anglers aboard has been achieved.

Another location east of the Cascades expecting a huge surge of sockeye is the Upper Columbia River, where the 2024 forecast is 401,700, up 16 percent over the recent 10-year average. If the forecast gels, it’ll be the second year in row where an Okanogan River sockeye forecast of 288,700—up from 187,400 and an actual return of 179,655 in 2023—stirs a summer fishing frenzy at the Brewster Pool. The recent trends have shown the sockeye show up in good amounts soon after it opens in July, and carry well into August.

If you head to Central Washington, you can mix in summer Chinook from Priest Rapids Dam to Chelan Falls and as high up as Brewster.

The 2024 Upper Columbia summer Chinook forecast is a still promising 53,000, down from a forecast of 85,400 and near an actual return of 54,722 in 2023; anglers can track when it’s time to go by checking the dam counts along the Columbia. The Columbia salmon season from Priest Rapids Dam to Rock Island Dam is open July 1 through August 31, and from Rock Island Dam to Wells Dam from July 1 until October 15. The area from Wells Dam to Brewster Bridge is open July 16 to September 30, and from Brewster Bridge to Highway 17 Bridge is open July 1-Oct. 15.

Summer Chinook fisheries on the Columbia are expected to open June 16-19 from the Astoria-Megler Bridge to Bonneville Dam. The area from Bonneville Dam to Priest Rapids Dam opens June 16-30 and closed to retention thereafter. Sockeye retention is expected to be allowed in the daily salmon bag limit from June 16-July 31 for waters downstream of Highway 395 Bridge in Pasco.

Open Ocean

The saltwater fishing fun begins when central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10) opens daily on June 5 for coho only. Try the shipping lanes from Jefferson Head north to Kingston-Apple Tree Point; Edmonds oil docks to Richmond Beach; West Point south of Shilshole Bay; and east side of Bainbridge Island. South-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11) opens June 5-30 on Wednesdays through Saturdays only for hatchery-marked Chinook.

After each week, WDFW will assess quotas and catch guidelines to see if additional time can be added. Look for kings at Tacoma off Point Defiance Park to the Tacoma Yacht Club; outside of Gig Harbor; Dolphin Point and Point Dalco off Vashon Island; south of Southworth Ferry Landing; and Des Moines to Redondo Beach.

The Tulalip Bubble Fishery is open for Chinook now through September 2 and fishing is allowed from 12:01 a.m. Fridays to 11:59 a.m. Mondays of each week. Fishing is closed June 1 for a tribal fishing ceremony. Fishing is allowed September 7–22 on weekends only. Another good early-summer hatchery Chinook fishery occurs in southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13), which is open year-round for salmon. Look for kings around Gibson Point, Hale Passage, and Point Fosdick.

The 2024 ocean salmon fisheries reflect a Chinook forecast like that of 2023. Although the hatchery coho projection is lower, it should still generate decent opportunities. The coastwide sport quota is 41,000 Chinook and 79,800 hatchery-marked coho.

Neah Bay (Marine Area 4), La Push (Marine Area 3), and Ilwaco (Marine Area 1) open for salmon retention beginning June 22. Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2) opens June 30-July 11 on Sundays through Thursdays only, and then open daily beginning July 14. Marine Areas 2, 3, and 4 are scheduled to remain open until September 15 or until quotas are met. Marine Area 1 is scheduled to remain open until September 30, or until quotas are met.

Anglers should check the WDFW regulation pamphlet or website for additional information before heading out on the water; catch quotas/ guidelines could impact some salmon fisheries, so be sure to check ahead at: wdfw.wa.gov. Tight lines and we’ll see you on the water very soon!

RACING SHEET

The Northwest racing scene is in full swing as spring has fully sprung in Seattle, and summer is nigh. Welcoming in the warmer weather and marking the true end of winter, the Seattle Yacht Club Tri Island Series is an always anticipated, three-race series that takes place over the months of April and May. This year, the first installment definitely did not disappoint.

At just over 85 miles, the Smith Island Race is a thrilling marathon on the Seattle sailing season calendar. The challenging racecourse takes the fleet on an epic journey northward, through the central Puget Sound, into Admiralty Inlet and past the churning waters of Port Townsend and out into the Straits of Juan De Fuca, and then all the way back. It’s a racecourse that can be absolutely glorious, but it’s also seen more than its fair share of light air affairs, with currents pushing boats far faster backward than they are able to sail forwards.

The windy forecast for the day's race was sure to make for a fast day on the water. The early 9 a.m. start got the fleet underway on the traditional long course and the 35-mile short course for the smaller boats. Racers came out and into the southerly wind, which was lining up with the forecasted conditions. The current flowed to the north in the morning. Some boats worked along the Bainbridge shore, while others stuck it out in the Sound and found themselves in some tremendous windy puffs that took them down the racecourse in a hurry. Winds rose into the low twenties as the fleet passed Point No Point at the northern end of Bainbridge Island, and super calm flat water made for fast and fun

Unfurling the Sails

DOUG HANSEN recaps the dramatic and thrilling first race of the Seattle Yacht Club’s Tri Island Series, the marathon that is the Smith Island Race.

racing, with close crosses and some flat-out drag races as boats skimmed along the water, hitting impressive top speeds.

The wind began to drop into the low teens as the leaders worked their way up into Admiralty Inlet off the southeast end of Marrowstone Island. The wind never went away completely, and the fleet continued along with the current that pushed them towards the Straits of Juan De Fuca. The wind began to fill from the south, nervously shifting and filling in back into the mid-teens.

It continued to build steadily just as the racers reached the shallow waters of Smith Island, which is more of a sandbar at this point. As the kites came down and jibs were hoisted, things quickly accelerated as the wind rapidly rose from the mid-teens into the twenties in a matter of minutes. Along with the wind, the current was right on schedule and rapidly switching to a flood tide midday, just as the first boats in the ORC fleet began to round the island. Wind against tide made for a wild ride with five-foot standing waves throughout Admiralty Inlet.

Large tidal rips began to form off the lighthouse at Point Wilson, making for impressively violent slamming for any boat that found themselves in the churning waters. Fast boats found themselves having to balance the need to stay in the strongest flowing water with the reality of being able to drive the boat through the intense short chop.

The huge current rips, however, did give the advantage of being able to see where the positive

water was. Tactically, it was simple enough to aim the boat at the rough patches; no need to guess.

As the fleet worked its way south, they built and dropped every few minutes, at times touching into the 30-knot range and then dropping back into the low twenties. It was a major challenge for trimmers and drivers to get things dialed in and work on shifting gears in the volatile conditions. Alan Lubner and the crew of the RP55 Zvi took home line honors with an impressive performance. They pushed the boat hard on the upwind slog back to Shilshole and finished in 9:29:49, which is absolutely ridiculous considering that only a couple of decades ago, this race was normally considered an overnighter.

The overall ORC win went to the meticulously prepared and sailed J122 Joyride, skippered by John Murkowski. Murkowski had a comfortable and impressive six-minute corrected lead over second-place Carl Sheath onboard his J120 Shearwater. On the short course, the J105 Moose Unknown sailed by John Aitchison and his crew finished the 35-mile course in just over six hours.

A major shoutout to the TP52 Mist, which came across a distressed vessel on the upwind sail to the finish. They quickly dropped their sails, began to stand by, and kept in contact with the small motorboat, which had its engine swamped by the waves and was getting tossed around just off Port Townsend. Mist coordinated with the Coast Guard and worked to get the boat under tow, standing by until the Whidby Island Fire Department arrived onboard a rescue boat and took over the scene.

Hits the Spot

Chips n’ dip your way through the summer months with a flavor-packed spin on traditional pico de gallo that stars Pacific Northwest spot prawns alongside olives, avocado, and more.

If you are one of the lucky ones who trap spot prawns in the Pacific Northwest, hopefully you caught some for this festive summer recipe. Otherwise, you can likely find the prized crustaceans at your local seafood market while supplies last.

Spot Prawn De Gallo, as you might imagine, uses the same ingredients as you’ll find in authentic Pico de Gallo—ripe red tomatoes, crisp onion and jalapeño, fresh cilantro and lime, and salt—but then the sweet, delicate flavor of succulent spot prawns are added, along with olives and avocado, for an elevated salsa-based dip. This recipe is a slight adaptation of Fredda Goldfarb’s, “Awesome Shrimp De Gallo,” featured in Rich Komen’s Five-Star Comfort Food: Inspirational Recipes for the Home Cook, which I had the pleasure of assembling with the Cinnabon founder who co-owns Roche Harbor Resort.

The key to this recipe is letting it rest. Combine all the ingredients (except the avocado), cover, and refrigerate for 24 hours. The tomatoes will juice up and the flavors will meld. Because the avocado will brown if the dip sits too long, leave out the avocado and add it in just before serving along with fresh, crisp tortilla chips.

Spot Prawn De Gallo

1¼ tablespoons sea salt, or as needed, divided

1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns

1 lemon, halved

1 pound fresh or frozen spot prawns, thawed if using frozen, then peeled, deveined, and tails removed

½ red onion, peeled and diced (about 1 cup)

2 garden tomatoes, diced (about 2 cups)

½ cup pitted black olives, chopped

2 jalapeño peppers, deseeded and minced

2 limes, juiced (4 tablespoons), or as needed

2 cups chopped fresh cilantro leaves, stems removed

2 medium avocados, chopped

Tortilla chips, as needed

Fill a large saucepot with water over high heat. Season the water with 1 tablespoon of the salt and add the peppercorns. Squeeze in the juice of the lemon and toss in the lemon peels as well. Stir to combine. When the water comes to a boil, add the spot prawns and boil until they turn pink, about 2 to 2½ minutes. Remove them with a slotted spoon, let cool completely, then chop into bite-sized pieces.

Add the chopped spot prawns—along with the onion, tomatoes, olives, and jalapeños—to a large bowl. Gently toss to combine, then add some of the lime juice along with the remaining salt and cilantro. Gently toss again. Add additional lime juice and/or salt to your liking. Place in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Remove, fold in the avocados, and serve chilled with tortilla chips.
