AT THE HELM
Peak Summer
As summer hits its stride here in July, this month’s issue jumps off the page with bright new ideas to fuel you through this (hopefully!) balmy, sun-streaked stretch of days.
We’ve got foodie travel recs in our farm-to-table dining guide to Orcas Island beginning on page 54. Plus, there’s the inside look at the new Arc Sport on pages 46-53. This zippy new, all-electric sports boat is a smartie, powered by over-the-air updating and a sophisticated battery pack designed and built in house.
Elsewhere, James O. Fraioli shares a magical twist on the summer Mai Tai in Sea Fare (pages 68-69); Port of Call continues its European tour with a stop in Positano, Italy, on pages 70-71; and Mark Yuasa talks summer salmon fishing on page 64. Our girl Pearl gets the pooches all set for the dog days of summer with her product picks on page 36, and Randy Woods weighs in on essential Goods + Gear for the humans, as well, on pages 32-33.
Long live summer!

SEAFAIR SUMMER FOURTH
Gas Works Park, Lake Union Park & Afloat on Lake Union in Seattle
Voted one of the nation’s best fireworks shows by both USA TODAY and Business Insider, the Seafair fireworks show is an all-time summer highlight. Landlubbers can watch from the grass at either Gas Works or Lake Union Park as the show lights up the 4th of July night, but we all know the best view is from aboard your own vessel; cast off early to snag a prime spot on the water.
(Also: Don’t forget about the Torchlight Parade to be held on July 27th as the 75th incarnation of Seafair cruises through the summer months.)

Port Breaks Ground on Seattle’s Planned Maritime Innovation Center
The wait for movement on Seattle’s long-planned Maritime Innovation Center (MInC) appears to be over. After six years of planning, the Port of Seattle finally broke ground May 21 on the new Center that is set to support and promote the Northwest maritime industry, plus revitalize the Fisherman’s Terminal property where the building will be located.
The first step in the ambitious plan is to demolish the currently vacant Ship Supply Building at the Salmon Bay site and use the original concrete slab as a base for the new MInC facility. Once completed at the end of next year, the new 15,000-square-foot MInC structure will house office and fabrication space for maritime workers.
The MInC will also be a location for new marine businesses and a training center for the next generation of people seeking careers in this growing field. One of the first anchor tenants will be Washington Maritime Blue, an organization that promotes the development of the state’s maritime businesses, technology, and environmental stewardship and acts as an incubator for the blue economy. (For instance, see Silverback Marine story on page 24.)
The plan for the MInC is part of a $100 million strategic redevelopment plan created by the Port of Seattle in collaboration with local maritime businesses and public entities to support Seattle’s working waterfront and attract new blue economy jobs to the region.
At present, project work on the new building will begin with partner architectural firm Miller Hull, which designed the new facility to follow
the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Living Building Challenge (LBC) frameworks. Under the strict LEED and LBC environmental standards, the building is designed to operate sustainably with net positive energy and a reduction in carbon emissions, compared with conventional building practices. Some of the green building elements of the plan include the use of salvaged materials, and the capture and reuse of rainwater.
Other redevelopment work being planned for the rest of the year and 2025 at Fisherman’s Terminal include the doubling in size of the Nordby Conference Center, new landscape plantings on the property, fresh striping for the parking lots, crosswalk improvements, added benches, and interpretive signage under the 1% for the Arts program for visitors wishing to see the terminal, including the famous Fisherman’s Memorial monument.
Following the completion of the MInC facility, the Port will also begin a rehabilitation plan for the 110-year-old Northwest Dock of Fisherman’s Terminal, which will replace deteriorating timber piers with new steel piles and fender systems to protect moored fishing vessels. Work on the docks is expected to begin in 2026 and continue into 2028, the Port said. For more information on the project, go to: portseattle.org/projects/ fishermens-terminal-redevelopment-1

Bellingham’s CBC Celebrates Completion of Wheelhouse Building Project in Time for 2024 Summer Season
Excitement among boaters in Bellingham, Washington, is growing as the town’s Community Boating Center (CBC) completed a fundraising and construction campaign this spring for the Wheelhouse Building project, which will open this summer as a gathering space for boating enthusiasts.
At the end of the campaign in April, CBC said it had raised $1.2 million of the expected $1.5 million total cost of the project. Under Phase 1 of the plan, set to end in 2024, CBC will complete construction on utility work on the Wheelhouse Building, located on Harris Avenue, just mere steps from CBC’s current rental headquarters.
Phase 2 will involve the purchase of new boating equipment and converting some of CBC’s existing powerboat fleet from fossil-fuel-based engines to electric power in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. The Phase 2 upgrades will also allow CBC to more easily serve community members with disabilities.
This second phase is expected to begin in 2025, once the Port of Bellingham finishes upgrades to its Small Watercraft Dock adjacent to CBC’s recently completed new campus. CBC described the new dock as the first one north of the City of Everett to provide “unprecedented access to the water for all.”
More than 5,000 boaters per year are expected to use the Wheelhouse building for year-round events, classes, and community meetings.
The Wheelhouse will provide heated spaces, meeting rooms, restrooms, showers, and other amenities. The group will use the Wheelhouse to promote boating to people of all ages, teach boating skills, provide safety lessons, and encourage a sense of marine stewardship among all boaters through “therapeutic recreation,” CBC said.
The Wheelhouse project broke ground last fall, thanks to donations from boaters, civic groups, and corporate partners. This summer, CBC founding board member Deb Dempsey said she hopes to close a $70,000 gap remaining in Phase 1 funds with a $20,000 matching grant from the Whatcom Community Foundation.
The CBC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing accessible and inclusive recreational boating opportunities in Bellingham, fostering marine stewardship, and promoting community engagement. [ ELECTRIFYING THE INDUSTRY ]
Silverback Marine Launches Sherpa 24 Electric Workboat
Fresh on the heels of last year’s reveal of its eGrizzly electric workboat, Tacoma-based Silverback Marine is back with another all-electric debut, the Sherpa 24, a landing craft designed to access environmentally sensitive beaches and fragile estuaries, where dock access is often limited.
Based on a variant of Silverback’s larger Sherpa 28 hull, designed by Elliott Bay Design Group and released in 2023, the new Sherpa 24 was created for customers that need to access delicate sea-to-shore environments. Powered by twin Photon Marine 300 electric outboards, the Sherpa 24 can also operate in noise-sensitive environments without producing harmful emissions.
With its ability to beach bow-first onto shore, the Sherpa 24 is equipped with an 81-inch fold-down bow door and push knees, allowing easy egress on shore. Other unique features of the new model are a fold-out dive ladder within the bow door and high-density polyethylene fendering on each side of the hull. Dual side dive doors and two aft PRC cutouts also provide additional water access for crews. An inset Euro transom also offers increased protection for the hull and electric outboard. The noiseless Photon 300 engines on the Sherpa 24 operate with 500 Newton-meters of torque, providing surprisingly strong towing capacity for a vessel of its size.
Ian Gracey, co-owner of Silverback Marine, called the Sherpa 24 the “Swiss Army knife” of workboats for its ability to perform a wide variety of duties in tight spaces, from shoreline surveying to marine biology research.
The recent workboat releases from Silverback are the result of a successful collaboration with other manufacturers of electric boat equipment through the Washington Maritime Blue (WMB) accelerator program, Gracey said. Set up to encourage greater development of sustainable maritime companies, WMB focuses on innovative green strategies to reduce carbon emissions within the industry.
Silverback, Gracey added, is a prominent alumnus of WMB, as was Portland-based Photon Marine and e-boat builder Pure Watercraft in Seattle. “What we’re seeing is the fulfillment of the Washington Maritime Blue vision,” he said. “Now we are seeing actual, functioning, commercially produced product entering the market.”
The environmental benefits of all-electric workboats are expected to be in high demand in the coming years, Gracey continued. “Ports and state agencies across the country are urgent to switch their small fleets to a reliable, proven, and versatile electric workboat platform,” he said.
In late May, Gracey said his company has started the first two hulls of the Sherpa 24 at its Tacoma facility. He added that Silverback plans to release an all-electric barge at the end of this year and is having initial discussions about creating a hybrid-electric truckable tug in the near future. [ WHAT’S APP? ]
New OnBuoy App Offers Rentable Moorage Without Damaging Habitat
The idea of Airbnb-style rental space for boat slips is not exactly new, but a recently launched app called OnBuoy allows boaters to offer buoy or other moorage tie-ups for short-term rental and protect the fragile marine environment from unnecessary anchor usage.
Speaking on the Boat Geeks podcast back in February, OnBuoy founder Darren Austin described the service as an app that allows boaters to quickly contact owners of privately owned mooring buoys by smartphone for the temporay rental of any available unused moorage.
The idea came to Austin while he was rushing to get to a first-come, first-served moorage destination. “As I’m looking over on the coastline, I just see private dock, private dock, mooring buoy, mooring buoy—and they were all empty,” he said. “I started thinking, ‘What if we were under sail power? What would we do if we needed to stop?’”
If someone wanted to just stop for a short tie-up before moving on to another destination, Austin said, “I don’t want to squat, I don’t want to trespass; if I just had this person’s contact information, I’d give him a ring and ask if it’s OK to tie up to the unused ball. Maybe I’d buy him a six-pack or something.”
The app Austin later created makes this informal process faster and easier, based on seamless online payments rather than alcohol swapping. OnBuoy allows private moorage owners to offer their buoys or docks to an online community of boaters wishing to rent space, either hourly or overnight. Such spaces, he said, are in high demand and short supply as interest in boating continues to ramp up across the region.
The service also has an environmental edge to it, Austin added. If boaters can’t find moorage, they’ll drop anchor. When these anchors are hauled back in, a chunk of sea life, such as vital eelgrass habitat, is almost always ripped out from the seabed. “Anchors can do some damage, even if you’re using them properly,” he said. As a result, OnBuoy was created as Washington State Social Purpose Corporation (SPC) committed to preserving and restoring the marine environment through the use of existing moorage options.
Members who use the app can also use their rental proceeds to offset the high costs of maintaining their buoys and docks. If not used often or well cared for, moorage equipment can decay and become adrift, which tangles boat props or endangers marine life.
All tie-ups listed on the OnBuoy site are regularly inspected for structural integrity, Austin said. The company also provides insurance for its customers against accidental damage and allows all hosts to approve all rental requests before reservations are set. Potential renters are also screened to ensure that reservations come from properly registered boats that meet the size and draft limitations for each tie-up location. For more details, or to download the app, go to: onbuoy.com

Set to arrive this summer, the Sirena 58, with layout options for two to four cabins, boasts plenty of room for gathering, plus a fuel-efficient, semi-displacement hull that allows the vessel to reach impressive speeds. Bow and stern thrusters help improve agility while docking, and the Seakeeper 9000NMS stabilizer ensures a smooth ride at any velocity.
The teak-covered swim platform and cockpit floor features a forward-facing, bench seat sofa in the transom, with partial covering overhead from the flybridge deck. Side walkways lead forward to another social gathering area on the foredeck, with more cushioned sofas and tables that can be converted to sunpads as needed.
Interior décor selections include a choice of walnut veneers, Limestone Prima and Grigio Perla countertops, white sand flooring, Espada leather dashboards, helm seats, and handrails. The luxurious, carpeted salon/dinette area includes a U-shaped sofa and a fixed table to port, opposite an L-shaped sofa to starboard. A TV lifting system and a Fusion Marine RA70 entertainment center are situated on the starboard side, with an optional hi-lo table. The galley aft and starboard of the salon has wooden flooring and several Miele appliances, including a refrigerator/freezer, a four-hob glass ceramic cooktop, and an oven. Corian worktops and a stainless steel sink round out the food prep area. Forward to port is the helm with a Garmin Platinum navigational electronics package, including a 10’’ MFD GPSMAP 8610 chartplotter, GHS 11 VHF radio, and a depth/speed transducer.
A staircase aft of the salon leads up to the open air, teak-accented flybridge deck that’s covered by an extra high carbon hard top with electric awning. The flybridge helm, with similar Garmin electronics, is located to port, opposite an optional sunpad and U-shaped sofa to starboard, plus a varnished teak table that can fit up to eight people. Other amenity options for guests include space for forward/
backward adjustable bench seating, a wet bar with a sink, barbecue, refrigerator, and icemaker. There is also room aft to park a small tender and hydraulic lift arm.
A stairway starboard of the main helm leads to the lower deck, which can be customized for individual needs. In the standard layout, the midship owner’s cabin features a centerline double berth, an en suite head and shower, two full-size wardrobes, a vanity portside, and sofa to starboard. The VIP cabin, located far forward, includes an en suite head and either a forward-facing island double berth or an aft facing berth tucked into the bow. The optional third guest cabin is located to port and has twin berths and access to a day head and shower. Space is also available for either a fourth crew cabin or a storage lazarette, accessible from the cockpit.
The twin Volvo D11 670-hp inboard diesels give the Sirena 58 a peppy 16-knot cruising speed and 27 knots at full throttle. An electric, power-assisted steering system with a servo unit, Garmin autopilot, and automatic trim controls help smooth out the ride when the chop is high.

ARC
The next chapter for California-based startup Arc Boats begins as the forthcoming Sport model surges forward with silent ferocity, powered by wireless updating, smart integrated design, and advanced battery tech.

48
In the ever-widening realm of electric boats, a new player has emerged on the waterscape: Arc Boats. Founded in 2021, the Los Angeles, California-based brand has brought together an eclectic team from the fields of aerospace engineering, electric vehicles, marine manufacturing, and software development, many with stints at such companies as SpaceX, Tesla, Rivian, Lyft, and marine staples like Brunswick and MarineMax, in the creation of a new breed of electric boats.
49
Designed and built completely in-house, from the battery packs to the powertrains and OS systems, the company’s Arc One debuted in 2022— a zippy 24-footer that packed a custom-made 220 kWh battery and 500 hp electric inboard to help it reach speeds of 40 mph. It made press stops up and down the West Coast, turned heads doing so, and sold out quickly.
If the Arc One was the experimental prototype, the Arc Sport set to debut here this summer is expected to be the brand’s mass-market powerhouse, upping those initial Arc One accolades with a 225 kWh battery powertrain and a 570 hp inboard, all still with zero emissions and a whisper-quiet ride.
“We’re out to build a better boat,” states Arc Boat chief executive officer Mitch Lee, who grew up
boating and has lent his background in mechanical engineering to the company’s formation. “And for us, that means starting with the batteries and building the boat around them, as opposed to taking a boat and slapping an electric powertrain on it, so that instead they are fully integrated into the design and the performance.”
Thus, the Arc Sport is a symphony of form and function: Its streamlined aluminum hull, sculpted with precision, slices through the water like a blade, minimizing drag and maximizing efficiency.
The attention to detail is evident in every curve and contour, from the gracefully arched bow to the aerodynamic deck layout. It features an auto-retract hardtop tower to close the cabin in inclement weather; an intelligent computer-controlled water ballast to
“It’s quieter, easier, way more reliable; there are no fumes, less of the little annoyances like a gas gauge not working. Instead, you can craft the perfect ride, and you have the precision of knowing exactly how far you can go and how much longer you can enjoy being out on the water. It’s altogether a better boating experience.”

allow you to shape your wake; bow and stern thrusters for easier maneuverability; and, extensive transom storage as the engine is instead integrated underneath the flooring along with the batteries. Everything is accessible at the touch of a button via the intuitive display in the cockpit, and taking a cue from the likes of Tesla, the Arc Sport utilizes over-the-air (OTA) updating to get better performance over time.
Lee points to that automotive industry, and its leaders, as models for how Arc hopes to help shape the future of electric boating.
“It’s pretty interesting when you look at things that now seem standard in the auto industry—helpful tech like back-up cameras or intuitive controls, or even how Tesla can push out an OTA update and fix any kind of little issue—haven’t really been brought to the boating industry at large yet,” he says. “If we can bring that same type of technology, and level of service, and integrate them all in a streamlined
product, I think we have the potential to really appeal to this market.”
While other electric boats of the same class—at a retail price of $258,000 it sits right around the same price as XShore’s Eelex 8000, and less than that of the Candela C-8—have been largely aimed at pleasure boating, or even hassle-free commuting, the Arc Sport has been specifically calibrated for water sports.
“Traditional sports boats are not only gas guzzlers, but they require a certain amount of finesse to even know how to captain that perfect wake,” explains Lee.
“We’ve invested a ton of time and energy into our ballast systems and intuitive controls, so instead of spending a bunch of time trialing and erroring, you can instead have that rip-roarin’ ride at the touch of a few buttons.”
Because they have channeled so much energy into their software systems, Arc plans to continue to handle every part of the production in-house, selling vessels direct to consumers. Long a sticking point in
51
52
the rollout of electric boats by and large, the battery packs found aboard the Sport are also designed and engineered within the company’s walls, a move Lee says was necessary as they hoped to ramp up production on a larger scale.
“I think that the fact that we do everything in-house is part of what makes us distinctive,” states Lee. “We can control and refine each and every little element, and as we plan to service the boats as well, hope to continue to learn from our customers based on their feedback as they get out on the water.”
While the company is firmly in sports mode at the moment as it rolls out the first models this summer (the brand plans a nationwide tour to
demo the boat for interested parties, including stops in southern California beach towns, Lake Tahoe, and the Northwest), Lee states that he thinks that Arc will be a player for many years to come.
“I think if you look ahead 5, 10, 20 years, the boating market will be largely electric, for a host of reasons. We are positioning ourselves well today with our engineering so that down the line we evolve along with industry, and help lead the charge.”

[ Into the Drink ]
Orcas Island Winery (orcasislandwinery.com), a gem nestled in the lush hills near the base of the Turtleback Mountain Preserve, offers a delightful retreat for those seeking a taste of the island's viticultural excellence. This family-owned boutique winery, the island’s first when established in 2011, boasts a rustic-yet-refined tasting room housed in the modern farmhouse of your dreams; the expansive outdoor patio also provides a splendid setting to enjoy a glass of their exquisite Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. The serene property is both kid- and dog-friendly, offers an array of gourmet picnic provisions to enjoy alongside your wine, and, come summer, hosts free weekend concerts featuring local musicians, as well as a pop-up restaurant on Friday evenings that stars Pan-Asian cuisine from local eatery The Kitchen.
Nestled in the heart of Eastsound, Doe Bay Wine Company (doebaywinecompany.com) is one part wine shop, one part tasting room, and all things charming. With both local and globally sourced options, the cozy, colorful little shop offers a curated selection of fine wines, including rare finds and sustainable choices. Visitors can enjoy tastings that highlight the unique characteristics of each bottle, often paired with local artisanal cheeses and charcuterie.
Also in Eastsound and festooned with old sailor’s ropes, seashells, and rich wood tables, the intimate, eclectic haven known as The Barnacle (thebarnacle. com) beckons you to belly up to the bar to enjoy an innovative, hand-crafted cocktail or meticulously crafted small plate. Pacific Northwest treasures are found in just about every sip on the seasonally inspired menu, from the locally grown herbs, botanicals, and berries that often flavor the drinks to the fir-tip-infused ice cubes that keep ‘em chill.
The first and only microbrewery located on Orcas, Island Hoppin’ (islandhoppinbrewery.com) offers a rotating selection of their own craft brews, which range from puckery IPAs to reds and warm stouts. A hot summer’s day calls for a pint of the Feel the Burn Chili Blonde, a spicy summer sipper that can be served up Michalata style with Clamato, mango juice, Worcestershire sauce, pepperoncini juice, hot sauce, salt, and pepper, all served in a glass with Tajin on the rim. Outside food is always welcomed, but the brewery also offers a plentiful selection of bites that
includes a local cheese plate complemented with Girl Meets Dirt jam.
[ Get it to Go ]
If you need to provision the galley for your return to sea, the aforementioned Girl Meets Dirt (girlmeetsdirt.com) headquarters sits at the ready on the corner of Lover’s Lane and Enchanted Forest Road in Eastsound. There, you’ll find a sweet selection of hand-crafted jams, shrubs, and bitters made with Island-grown ingredients like pears, plums, rhubarb, and lavender, as well as items from neighboring islands, like seasonings from San Juan Island Salt Co. (The limited-edition peppered peach jam is a real friend to cheese, and the Island Pear or Plum shrubs simply need a splash of sparkling water to shine brightly all summer long.)
The smell of caramelized sugar, rich butter, and yeasty bread wafts from Brown Bear Baking (brownbearbaking.com) in Eastsound, a must-stop for all your carbohydrate needs. Sit at one of the picnic tables out front to enjoy a flaky croissant or slice of quiche, then be sure to snag a loaf of Mission Fig Apricot, Tuscan Olive, or Country Hearth bread to take back for building summer sammies. Located on an old island homestead in a small orchard garden in the center of town, Olga Rising (olgarising.com) serves up a great cuppa joe (crafted with Lighthouse Roasters espresso) as well as a stellar roster of breakfast sandwiches, pastries, and lunch items that can be ordered ahead online. Enjoy while relaxing on one of the Adirondack chairs found on the quaint, kitschy patio.
[ Taste of the Islands ]
Abutting the lapping waters of Buck Bay in Olga, Buck Bay Shellfish (buckbayshellfishfarm.com) could be described as both as a seed-to-shuck establishment—the briny oysters and clams found on the menu are all cultivated mere feet from the patio dining area where you’ll enjoy your meal—as well as a fisherperson-to-feast provisionary as you can also grab fresh crab and fish at the Buck Bay fish market. (Most of the time, the friendly staffers are on a first-name basis with the local who caught your fish!) With outdoor and tented seating that looks out onto the water, the Buck Bay Bistro exudes convivial, casual vibes as you sup on fried oysters, crab cakes,
59
fish n’ chips, shrimp tacos, and other fresh fare. Do be prepared to while away some time, as the spot is a favorite amongst visitors and islanders alike, and for very good reason.
When one thinks of fine dining on the Islands, the highly-acclaimed Matia Kitchen (matiakitchen.com) and its sultry little sister, Monti (montimontimonti. com), may immediately come to mind. Chef Avery Adams—who recently received a James Beard Foundation nomination in the Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category—helms the kitchens at both restaurants with a hyper-local approach to their creative and adventurous menus. At Matia, dishes are dreamed up the night before service, lending beautifully to selections that capture of-the-moment ingredients. If you can snag a reservation for the nightly chef’s counter, by all means do so; available to just six diners nightly, Chef Adams curates a multi-course feast that can only be described as a culinary
journey. Monti, housed in the same building since Matia re-opened there in 2023 after a brief closure, boasts both a sexy, chandelier-lit bar fit for date nights and a breezy patio for drinking in the views. The food here is distinctly Italian infused, often offering fresh pastas in addition to charcuterie, fresh focaccia, and bar bites, and, of course, the cocktails are top-notch. Eastsound pizza lovers, still smarting from the loss of longtime staple Hogstone, rejoiced late last spring when the gourmet eatery was reborn as Houlme (houlme.com). Piping hot, wood-fired pizza is still largely the name of the game here, but chef and co-owner Jay Blackington is also putting that oven to good use for a vast array of seasonally driven sides, salads, and sweets, too. It’s all super bright and super fresh: a summery salad topped with grilled garlic scapes, hot honey-drizzled carrots with whipped goat cheese, or chilled summer cucumbers swimming in balsamic, with hazelnuts and dill.
60
[Stay A While]
If you are in need of a night or two on terra firma, there is also stellar dining to be had at a number of the island’s inns, retreats, and farms. The Outlook Inn (outlookinn.com) in Eastsound is all things resting and relaxing, plus the hotel’s New Leaf Cafe (outlookinn. com/newleaf) offers brunch, happy hour, and dinnertime delights that can be enjoyed in their airy dining room or waterfront patio. Locals highly recommend the braised duck ragu that sits atop a pile of ruffled-edge tripolini pasta made by the island’s own Local-Goods. The outdoor soaking tubs found at the spa located within the picturesque Doe Bay Resort & Retreat (doebay.com) would make for a lovely afternoon sojourn, to be followed by an equally lovely meal at the Doe Bay Cafe (doebay.com/cafe).
Much of the produce on the menu is grown on-site at the resort’s organic garden, and the vegetablefueled dishes are, in general, very vegan and
gluten-free friendly. Immerse yourself in farm life at Once in a Blue Moon Farm (onceinabluemoonfarm. com), a third-generation family farm located on the sunny western slope of Mount Woolard near West Sound, where you can also take a farm tour and pick up farm goods such as eggs, orchard fruit, and more to enjoy during your overnighter. Or, peer at the 180-degree water views from your suite, pet the rescue animals, and pluck garden-grown produce from the U-pick patch, all with a stay at the utterly charming Pebble Cove Farm (pebblecovefarm.com) in Eastsound.

TIGHT LINES
CONTRIBUTED BY MARK YUASA, WDFW
Summer All-Stars
What a catch! MARK YUASA outlines your summertime action from salmon to crab.
Summer is when many anglers will holler “fish on!” or look to bide some quality time for a “crab-tivating” experience! Statewide summer salmon fisheries are at their highest level right now with a variety of species to catch including Chinook, coho and sockeye, and soon, Dungeness crab will come into play in many waterways of Puget Sound.
The excitement for salmon started in June when anglers tapped into some decent action at the Tulalip Bubble Fishery north of Everett, central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10), southcentral Puget Sound (Marine Area 11), and southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13). The coastal ports of Ilwaco (Marine Area 1), Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2), La Push (Marine Area 3) and Neah Bay (Marine Area 4) also opened in late June for Chinook and hatchery coho.
In July, the doors swing open even wider as there will also be some freshwater options for salmon. Among them are sections of the Skagit River and Baker Lake where the Baker River sockeye forecast is 56,750, up from a forecast of 31,296 in 2023.
You can fish the Skagit River from Mount Vernon Memorial Highway Bridge to the Dalles Bridge at Concrete for sockeye through July 15. Baker Lake also opens July 6-August 31. Be sure to track the trap counts on the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (WDFW) webpage to decide when to go fishing in the lake.
My standout early summer Chinook and/or sockeye fishery occurs in central Washington’s Upper Columbia River at Rocky Reach Dam to Chelan Falls, as well as other spots in between
and way up in the Brewster Pool. Timing is key on the Upper Columbia River as migrating Chinook and sockeye won’t stay in one spot for very long. Water level and flow in between each dam plays a role in how the fish bite and where you’ll find them from day-to-day.
The 2024 Columbia River sockeye forecast of 401,700 is up 16% over the recent 10-year average and anglers could see back-to-back years of success in targeting sockeye in open waters of the Columbia River. (As an FYI: The Okanogan River sockeye forecast of 288,700—which is the bread and butter for northcentral Washington fisheries—is also up from 187,400 and an actual return of 179,655 in 2023.) Most of the sockeye action happens in the Brewster Pool, a popular summer deep-water salmon fishing location on Upper Columbia River, but you can find them throughout the river system. Anglers will also try their luck for summer Chinook from Priest Rapids Dam to Chelan Falls and up at Brewster. The 2024 Upper Columbia River summer Chinook forecast is 53,000 down from a forecast of 85,400 and near an actual return of 54,722 in 2023.
If saltwater salmon fishing is more up your alley, then make plans to target the Strait of Juan de Fuca where Sekiu/Pillar Point (Marine Area 5) opens July 1 for hatchery Chinook and hatchery coho. The Chinook fishery could close sooner than original August 15th end date if the 6,539 legal size encounter guideline is met. Look for Chinook around Sekiu at the Caves, a vast stretch of kelp-lined shoreline near the breakwater off Mason’s Resort in Clallam Bay, and westward to the Sekiu River mouth, the
Slip Point Buoy, Mussolini Rock and Little Mussolini Rock, Eagle Point, the Slide and Coal Mines areas and Pillar Point. The eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, Port Angeles (Marine Area 6) opens July 1 and runs to August 15 for hatchery Chinook and hatchery coho. The Chinook legal-size encounter guideline is 11,173. The area east of the boundary is open July 1-September 26 for hatchery coho only.
WDFW fishery managers aligned several hatchery Chinook directed fisheries to be open July 18-20 only and includes: the San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7); northern Puget Sound/Admiralty Inlet (Marine Area 9); central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10); and, south-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11). WDFW will assess the catch after the initial three-day opener for all four marine areas. Additional Chinook openings may occur based on available quota or other catch guidelines. When Chinook fishing is closed, Marine Area 10 remains open daily in July for a nonselective directed coho fishery. Before making any plans to go summer salmon fishing, be sure to check the WDFW regulations webpage at: wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations
WDFW shellfish managers were busy late last month planning the summer Dungeness crab fisheries in many marine waterways of Puget Sound. The crabbing season was expected to open sometime in early July. You can find the news release with specific dates and open locations by going to the WDFW website at: wdfw.wa.gov.

RACING SHEET
BY DOUG HANSEN
Swift & Sure
DOUG HANSEN recaps the rollicking, rolling Swiftsure International Yacht Race, where only the intrepid and bold prevailed.
Memorial Day in the United States is a ceremonial indicator that summer is beginning. The days stretch long, the rain somehow seems lighter, and the sun even starts to peek through the clouds occasionally. For sailors, however, Memorial Day weekend is dominated by one thing: Swiftsure. Hosted by the Royal Victoria Yacht Club nearly every year since 1930, the Swiftsure International Yacht Race has been a beacon in the calendar of the ever-ambitious sailing programs in the region. The race, steeped in history, invites boats of all shapes and sizes to Victoria, British Columbia, for a unique long-distance race in the exposed waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The traditional course gives the race its namesake: Head out of Victoria Harbor, sail to the Swiftsure Bank lightship and back. The lightship itself has been removed in recent decades, a challenge that the fleet and race organizers have met with adaptability and resilience, changing the course to continue the race’s legacy. However, many boats still choose to sail the traditional course, reaching a specific GPS position before turning back.
In this year’s race, the bulk of the fleet was heading to the two shorter courses; the Cape Flattery race to a mark near Neah Bay and the Juan de Fuca race to Clallam Bay and back. The race organizers sort boats into different courses by speed potential, intending to give everyone an opportunity to sail the courses and finish during the day on Sunday. For smaller boats, there is a separate inshore race decided on the day of the race so smaller or less experienced boats can return to the dock in time for dinner.
The weather forecast for the race was a recipe for anxiety, adding to the intense and unpredictable nature of the Swiftsure International Yacht Race. The forecast called for a roaring westerly flowing down the Strait with wind gusts into the mid-thirties for the race’s first half. The wind was met with a massive thirteen-foot ebb tide flowing against it, making for a horrendous sea state that would test the stomach of even the most seasoned sailor. To make matters a bit more complex, after the front of the weather system was to move through Saturday morning, the wind was going to die off to essentially nothing for the balance of the race, leaving a fleet of bruised and battered sailors drifting along towards the finish, that is if they didn’t get swept up in the current.
We saw the weather coming together as advertised on the morning of the race, with wind and plenty of waves. Still, the long course boats got underway on schedule at 10 a.m. An issue with the committee boat dragging anchor delayed the medium course boats’ start for several minutes and caused several restarts as the committee worked tirelessly to keep the ends of the line anchored to give a fair start line to all. Unfortunately, the puffing breeze at the start claimed several racers and ended their day before they had even started. Three of the four TP52s found themselves heading back to the dock with gear failures in the waves, but, thankfully, other than a few bruised egos, no injuries were reported.
As the boats pounded their way upwind, it was simply a game of holding on and preserving
the boat as the wind held in the mid-twenties well into the day. Over half of the fleet withdrew from the race by day’s end. Like clockwork, the wind started to drop as the fleet rounded their turning marks and began to make their way back towards the finish line. The earliest arriving fast boats found their way home and finished around eleven at night, while the rest of the fleet found themselves within sight of the finish line as the sun came up without a breath of wind across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Thankfully, the sea state had settled down by then, but the current was still roaring all morning, making any forward progress painful. Eventually, some breeze filled just before lunchtime, and the fleet limped its way to the finish, making for a rather anticlimactic finish to a fascinating race.
Special mention should go out to Steve Johnston and his crew on the TP52 Mist, the only TP52 to stick it out and finish the race, beating out Alan Lubner’s beautifully prepared and sailed RP55 for the corrected time win. In the long course, hats off to Jeff Eckard and his crew on board the venerable Peterson 41 Will O The Wisp, finishing the traditional Swiftsure Classic course in thirty-two hours and seven minutes to take the win and be one of only two boats to finish the long course this year.

Summer with a Twist
Toast to breezy, balmy July with an ice cold, summery Mai Tai cocktail that mixes the rum-based drink’s iconic tropical flavors with a few fresh additions.
Enjoying an ice cold Mai Tai (meaning “out of this world” in Tahitian) is a refreshing escape during our warm summer months. One sip and you’ll easily find yourself basking on an island or sandy beach. The iconic blend of rum, lime, and orgeat (a sweet almond syrup with hints of orange flower water) perfectly complements the sunny, breezy July conditions we’re having on the water. This version, which includes a splash of curacao and an orange-cherry topper, is from the cocktail book Tiki with a Twist by Montauk native Lynn Calvo, whom I had the pleasure of working with on this fun-filled project.
For anyone interested in cocktail history, Ernest Gantt, who spent time with his rum-running grandfather in Haiti and Cuba, helped launch the tiki culture by opening Don the Beachcomber Cafe in Hollywood, California. When Victor Bergeron came across Don the Beachcomber, he realized Gantt’s idea had legs. Bergeron—later known as Trader Vic—spread the tiki vibe further by founding the famous Trader Vic’s chain. Both men claim credit for inventing the Mai Tai.
As you cruise along this month, enjoy the drink’s tropical flavors that will invigorate your senses, making each moment more vibrant. Whether you’re anchoring in a serene cove in the San Juan Islands or gliding over sparkling waves across Puget Sound, this Mai Tai will elevate your boating experience to a delightful, unforgettable time. (Do remember to keep that experience safe and fun for all by drinking responsibly!)
The Summer Mai Tai
1 ounce light rum
½ ounce curacao
½ ounce orgeat
½ ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce dark rum
1 orange wheel, for garnish
1 maraschino cherry, for garnish
Add ice to a cocktail shaker, and add the light rum, curacao, orgeat, and lime juice. Shake for about 10 seconds, then strain into a large rocks glass filled with crushed ice. Float the dark rum on top and garnish with the orange slice and maraschino cherry.
A James Beard Award–winning cookbook and cocktail author with more than 50 published titles to his credit, Fraioli’s books have been featured on Ellen and the Food Network, and in Vogue, People, Forbes, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. He resides in Bellevue, but keeps his boat (a 37-foot Riviera) in beautiful Anacortes, the gateway to his beloved San Juan Islands. Have a cookbook idea or project in mind?
