PLANS

Now that spring is in the air, it’s getting easier to take flight, thanks to an expanding partnership between Kenmore Air and the Puyallup Tribe. Beginning next month, Kenmore Air will offer two new daily flights from the Tacoma area to the boater-friendly playgrounds of San Juan Island.

Starting May 16, Kenmore is scheduling morning and afternoon round-trip seaplane flights from the Puyallup Tribal Air Terminal on Ruston Way to the Roche Harbor and Friday Harbor marinas. The planes used in the service will feature a stylized red-and-black salmon livery for the Puyallup Tribe and a logo for its Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

While the new flights are open to all customers, Kenmore said the interests of Puget Sound boaters played a role in the airline’s decision to launch the route. “We reached out to a lot of local yacht clubs in the South Sound area,” said Scott Meis, vice president of marketing for Kenmore’s parent company, Seattle Hospitality Group. “There was quite a bit of excitement around having quick access to San Juan Island and being able to skip the long drive or ferry times.”

Since the carrier announced the new route in February, Kenmore has already received a handful of reservations for the new San Juan Island service, Meis said, but the airline “expects the pace to pick up” as the May 16 launch date gets closer and summer travel demand rises.

The two seaplane routes from the Tacoma to San Juan Island will take about 55 minutes, representing a huge advantage over the average four-hour drive and ferry trip time or the half-day sailing journey, not to mention the increased traffic tie-ups expected during the busy summer

season. Flights to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor will depart the Ruston Way terminal at 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day and return at 11:45 a.m. and 6:15 p.m. One-way direct fares are currently listed at $269 per person.

This will be the second year of operation of the Puyallup Air Terminal, located between the RAM Restaurant & Brewery and the former C.I. Shenanigans restaurant on Ruston Way. Since opening, the terminal has flown more than 100 flights, serving nearly 1,000 passengers. Later this summer, the Puyallup Tribe plans to welcome a new Native-themed restaurant called Woven, which is being developed in partnership with Japanese-American celebrity chef Roy Yamaguchi. The Emerald Queen Casino will also offer hotel stay packages and amenities to travelers this season, such as private luxury transportation to and from the air terminal.

In addition to the Tacoma-San Juan flights, Kenmore added on March 1 twice daily, 30-minute seaplane flights from Friday Harbor to the Victoria Inner Harbor Marina in British Columbia, plus 55-minute flights from Victoria International Airport to Seattle’s Boeing Field, using Kenmore Air Express wheeled-service aircraft.

Kenmore Air has a fleet of 25 aircraft and employs 52 pilots and more than 250 people during its peak summer season. The airline offers dozens of scheduled and charter seaplane and wheeled-aircraft flights per day to 12 locations in Seattle, Tacoma, the San Juans, and British Columbia, as well as various sightseeing flights around the Salish Sea.

USCG Whale Alert System Unveiled to Protect Marine Life from Boat Strikes

The increasing marine traffic seen each year in Salish Sea waters has prompted a new U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) pilot project to protect the region’s endangered whale population via a monitoring and warning system to alert boaters of marine mammal presence near the surface.

Operated by the USGC’s Puget Sound Vessel Traffic Service, the four-year program will use a new Whale Report Alert System (WRAS), which collects and reports whale sightings in a common database via an online app. The warning information is coordinated through the USCG’s cetacean desk, commonly referred to as the “whale desk.”

Lt. Commander Margaret Woodbridge, who manages the USCG’s whale desk, told KOMO in a local news interview that WRAS “will collect and disseminate near-real-time information on whale location to large commercial mariners in the large commercial traffic system.”

These whale sightings can be transmitted directly to the whale desk by radio or phone and will be used to create situational awareness bulletins to other ships in the area. “Knowing where whales are nearby allows ship operators to take mitigating action to avoid striking or disturbing whales in their vicinity,” Woodbridge said.

The USCG has worked for about a year, contacting various federal, state, tribal, and local organizations—including the Langley-based nonprofit whale advocacy group called Orca Network—to coordinate the reporting system

before the it was launched on February 21.

“We’re encouraging everyone to report sightings through either the Whale Report app or the Orca Network, both of which feature the same alert database,” Woodbridge said. “The more data we have coming into the system, the better we can inform ship operators where whales are around them.”

The WRAS data is also being shared with marine scientists studying whale behavior in the area, so the program has a secondary benefit in addition to increased safety, Woodbridge added. This research will provide more data about other impacts that boating has on cetacean behavior, including excessive noise from boat engines that can disrupt breeding habits or interfere with the orcas’ ability to use echolocation for hunting prey.

The critical need for the WRAS monitoring and warning system arose in 2019, after a humpback whale was accidently struck and killed by a passing ferry boat in Elliott Bay. This tragedy, and other whale strikes in Puget Sound waters, led to the inclusion of WRAS development funding withing the federal Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2022, a $14.36 billion appropriations bill that was supported by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.

While the federal WRAS system is designed mostly for larger commercial maritime traffic, such as military vessels, cargo ships, fishing

boats, and ferries, the Seattle office of the USCG is also reminding all recreational boaters in the Salish Sea to be cognizant of existing rules about steering clear and reducing speeds around sightings of local whale pods, especially the critically endangered Southern Resident orca population, which has been reduced to a total of about 75 animals.

In 2023 alone, the USCG found that the Salish Sea waters between Canadian and U.S. ports in the Pacific Northwest handled nearly 300,000 commercial vessel crossings, excluding the thousands more sailing trips from recreational watercraft.

According to current laws regarding navigation near marine mammals, boaters in the U.S. must reduce their speed to no more than 7 knots when they come within a half-mile of any kind of whale and to maintain a distance of at least 400 yards ahead of or behind the estimated path of any sighted orca whale pods, or 100 yards from other marine mammals, including humpbacks, gray whales, porpoises, or dolphins. Boaters must also disengage engines if a cetacean comes within 300 yards of a vessel.

More information on the WRAS can be found by visiting orcanetwork.org, or by downloading The WhaleReport app, available free via the Apple or Google Play stores.

Boats Afloat, Anacortes Shows Prepare to Launch the ’24 Season

The days may still be gray and misty, but we Northwesterners know that just means spring has sprung, and with it the season’s big boat shows have appeared on the horizon: Seattle’s Boats Afloat at the end of this month and the Anacortes Boat & Yacht Show in mid-May.

The Northwest Yacht Brokers Association’s Spring Boats Afloat will kick off on Thursday, April 25, and run through Sunday, the 28th, on South Lake Union. A few weeks later, the Northwest Marine Trade Association’s Anacortes show will be held May 16 -18 at the city’s Cap Sante Marina.

Boats Afloat, the largest floating boat show in the Pacific Northwest, is held twice a year at the still-growing Lake Union Piers development on South Lake Union, and features over 400,000 square feet of display space. The most recent Boats Afloat event, held last September, showcased more than 200 powerboats ranging from 15 to 100 feet in length, including sailboats, day boats, and long-range cruising yachts.

This month’s spring show will offer a diverse lineup of watercraft from more than 50 brokers and dealers from Washington, Oregon, California, British Columbia, and Florida. Some major brands expected to appear include Bayliner, Beneteau, Catalina, Coastal Craft, DeFever, Grand Banks, Hampton, Hanse, Hunter, Horizon, Jeanneau, Maritimo, Marlow, Meridian, Navigator, Nordhavn, Ocean Alexander, Riviera, Sea Ray, Selene, Tayana, Tiara, and Westport.

In addition to the boat displays, Boats Afloat will feature a lineup of curated events, live music, food and beverage choices, boat-building events for kids, and other family-friendly activities. Children 12 and under get in free. More information on event times, admission, and parking can be found at: boatsafloatshow.com

Farther north next month, the three-day Anacortes Yacht & Boat Show will overlap again with the five-day Trawlerfest lineup of educational seminars held within easy walking distance of the Cap Sante Marina. The combined event will feature new and brokerage boats, presented by dealers, brokers, and exhibitors from around the Northwest and Canada, as well as seminars from experts and rendezvous evening activities.

The show will kick off on May 16 with a ticketed evening cocktail cruise around the Anacortes area, boarding at Islands Adventure, Cape Sante Marina, A Dock. On Friday, May 17, a Twilight Cocktail Party will also be held at Seafarers Memorial Park. More than 100 exhibitors are expected to be showcasing their watercraft and other boat equipment during the event.

The main portion of the in-water show will be at Cap Sante Marina, but additional boat displays can also be seen on land at various Anacortes-area boatyards and dealer locations. A free shuttle, sponsored by BananaBelt Boats, will be operating between the marina and the participating boatyards throughout the event. Other shoreside displays for maritime services, accessories, and trailerable boats will also be viewable adjacent to the marina entrance.

The well-regarded Trawlerfest Show will consist of nearly 30 seminars and educational sessions, held at Seafarers Memorial Park. The sessions will address a wide variety of maritime industry subjects, including weather prediction, boat maintenance, electronics, communications, engine service, navigation, destination suggestions, and more.

Geeking Out

Get in with The Boat Geeks: Two local enthusiasts launch a dedicated podcast for boaters, by boaters, and all about boating.

Testing, testing, one, two, three: The mic has definitely been “on” since Darren O’Brien and Daeron Katz launched their podcast, “The Boat Geeks,” in January 2024. Fueled by their deep passion for boats, the pair spent five years planning and dreaming up the show, which is devoted to all things Pacific Northwest boating, features an array of experts, authors, gurus and fellow boaters, and is offered up in conversational style.

“We live in such a unique area for boating, and we love talking boats with just about anybody,” states O’Brien of the show’s vision. “It’s so fun to sit down and have a conversation about all kinds of different aspects of boating culture. We learn something new every single time and every single episode.” O’Brien is a longtime boat owner, and the pair jokes that he is the salt of the pair; while Katz brings a wealth of podcast experience, as well as an immense amount of enthusiasm to the table. It’s also a table that is literally situated inside O’Brien’s 50-foot vessel, as the pair recorded each episode in moorage at Port Ludlow. “If you see the curtains sway occasionally in the footage, it’s because we got rolled by a wake,” O’Brien says with a laugh. “But it’s more authentic this way, plus it seems to get guests in a fun frame of mind.”

As of press time, the pair had recorded nine episodes, with the inaugural shows featuring such local luminaries as Recreational Boating Association of Washington (RBAW) president Bob Wise, who updated listeners on the org’s latest projects; Jesse Wiegel, the race boss for R2AK, who provided an inside look into the epic, engine-less race; and Jennifer Silver Redmond, an accomplished sailor who reminisced on live-aboard life.

“I live vicariously through our guests,” says Katz, who works in the video game industry by day. “I’m always so blown away by how boaters just do it. They seize adventure and opportunity and are just so fun to talk to. And given the little slice of boating heaven we live in, there is literally no end to ideas for fresh content.”

New episodes are being released bi-monthly, and the podcast is available on platforms such as YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and all major podcast players. To stay updated on the latest episodes, follow The Boat Geeks on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) @theboatgeeks, or go to: theboatgeeks.com

2025 Endurance 630

The newest member of the Endurance family available from Hampton Yacht Group, the thoughtfully designed 630 is a true world-class cruising yacht.

At first glance, the beautiful new Hampton Endurance 630 for 2025 may seem like a lot of cruiser to handle, but it’s actually designed to be operated by just two people. The 630 is the smallest long-range cruiser in the Endurance series, measuring 66’8”, but its 19’ beam makes it feel like a much larger vessel, giving it plenty of room for luxury amenities and socializing spaces. Most interior spaces are appointed with rich Makore cherry wood paneling, teak decking, and holly flooring, bringing touches of elegance throughout the vessel.

Stepping through the aft boarding gates, visitors are greeted with a teak-decked cockpit with a forward-facing bench settee and lacquered teak table with a compass rose inlay design. A mini-fridge is built into the table pedestal, and a 32” TV sits in a fold-down cabinet starboard of the salon entry door. On each side of the cockpit, wing stations with hydraulic thruster controls make docking easy. Recessed, covered side decks lead to the bow, and aircraft-style side doors provide access to the pilothouse. A door in the Portuguese bridge gives you a centerline walk-through to a foredeck seating area with two settees and ample room for outdoor gatherings.

Through the stainless-steel aft cockpit door, the carpeted salon includes a plush L-shaped couch to starboard, a central hi-lo coffee table, two barrel chairs, and two free-standing leather armchairs. Flat surfaces in the salon come with a choice of granite, marble, or Corian countertops around the perimeter. A 49” LED TV with a Bose sound system is located to port, along with a built-in Makore wine cooler cabinet.

Forward of the salon, the open design of the galley offers unobstructed views from the pilothouse helm to the aft deck settee. Granite countertops surround a large sink and a forward-facing serving counter with three barstools. GE appliances include a full-size refrigerator, a four-burner induction cooktop, a 24” oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, and a trash compactor.

The forward pilothouse may be the most social spot on the vessel, with a port-side, U-shaped dinette and wooden table adjacent to the center helm, allowing for easy interaction with the captain. The Garmin 8600 electronics package includes radar, a chart plotter, five touchscreen monitors, autopilot, a depth finder, GPS, two VHF radios, AIS, and compass. Two Pompanette Platinum helm chairs and a Makore ship’s wheel round out the helm amenities.

An interior floating staircase leads to the flybridge, which includes an upper helm station. Aft of the helm is an L-shaped settee and table combo located opposite an entertainment center, with a fold-down 32” TV, Corian countertops, a U-line fridge, and a DCS 30” propane BBQ. The aft open-air flybridge has room for a small tender and a 1,200-pound capacity davit.

The stairway starboard of the lower helm carries you down, past the washer/ dryer combo, to the three staterooms: a midship owner's, with an en suite head and shower with marble flooring; a forward VIP stateroom with an island berth; and, a third guest stateroom with separate twin beds. The VIP and guest rooms share access to another head and shower.

Powering it all are twin John Deere 750 hp diesel engines with a Sea-Torque Shaft System and four electronic engine control stations.

With a super sleek, swept back silhouette, designed by Apollonio Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering Services, this 2005 LeClercq certainly has speed as one of its top selling points. Its twin Detroit Diesel 12V92s produce 1,100 hp, allowing it to cruise smoothly at 17 knots and go to 24 knots on a full sprint. Entering from the aft SeaLift hydraulic swim step, you are greeted by an airy gathering space,

with curved staircases framing the lazarette door and leading to an elevated cockpit.

Two forward-facing, cushioned settees are paired with a central wooden table. Wraparound decks lead to the bow while a steep ladder-staircase goes up to the open skybridge above.

Moving forward on the main deck, you pass through a sliding-glass door to a minimalist, carpeted salon, featuring a sofa and armchair combo to starboard, a central coffee table with a nestled ottoman, and an LCD TV that rises

from a wooden entertainment center cabinet. Forward of the salon is the dining area, with a glass table to starboard that can accommodate eight people, facing a wet bar to port. Another three steps up forward is the galley, equipped with GE Profile appliances, including an electric oven, a five-burner stove, a full-size refrigerator, a dishwasher, and a convection/microwave oven. Wide stone countertops extend aft to form a breakfast bar with two movable stools to starboard. Windows allow for plenty of natural light to brighten the whole salon/dining/galley area.

A centerline transom door provides access to the crew quarters and engine room. A few steps up on either side is an al fresco cockpit, with a forward-facing settee and a lacquered hi-lo table. Opposite is a small wet bar with a mini-fridge and ice maker. A handy combination windscreen and sunshade can also be rolled down from the overhanging upper deck to provide a little relief from the weather.

To port, a teak staircase leads to the flybridge, and to starboard is a joystick-controlled docking station. Open-air, teak side decks also run the length of the yacht to the foredeck, where another high-gloss dinette table and two settees are located. Forward of the seating area is a huge sunpad, big enough for several lounging sunbathers.

Inside the electric sliding glass door forward of the cockpit is the entrance to the salon, furnished with an L-shaped settee opposite a sofa to port. One of three fold-down TV screens can be lowered from the salon ceiling—the other two can be found in the cockpit and flybridge. Just forward, the galley is situated to starboard, featuring an island with a raised counter, a double-door refrigerator, an oven and cooktop, a microwave, and a dishwasher. Nicely situated nearby is a foldable table and dinette seating for up to eight guests.

The vessel’s lower helm is fitted with Garmin touchscreens and a suite of the latest navigational gear. The Stidd helm chair features joystick controls and autopilot built into the armrests. A floating staircase aft of the helm leads to an even larger flybridge helm, equipped with the same electronics and two Stidd chairs. The 360-degree views from this perch will likely make this Playbook’s main helm. The rest of the flybridge is

partially covered with a hardtop and includes a wraparound settee and hi-lo table. Just aft of the helm is another wet bar with barstools, an ElectriChef grill, and refrigerator, providing yet another inviting gathering space.

The lower deck contains the four staterooms: a midship, full-beam owner's with an en suite head and shower, plus his-and-hers sinks; a VIP stateroom at the bow, with an island queen berth and en suite head; and two guest cabins, with two bunk beds to port, two twin beds that can be slid together into one berth to starboard, and a shared guest head.

Playbook is powered by twin Volvo IPS1200 engines, providing a combined 1,800 hp, giving the vessel a cruise speed of 23 knots and a maximum speed of 27 knots.

BOUNTY ON BOARD

April is here, and that means it’s time to showcase a delectable array of ocean flavors at your next gathering.

With a variety of Pacific Northwest seafood available at local grocery stores and markets, get ready to fill your spring platters and boards with an impressive collection of mouthwatering bites that capture the essence of our region’s coastal bounty while celebrating its rich culinary heritage. The following recipes are courtesy of Fremont Mischief Distillery and Chef John Wahlke’s cookbook: Spirited Cooking from the Pacific Northwest, and Rich Komen’s forthcoming Five-Star Comfort Food: Inspirational Recipes for the Home Cook. For good measure, I’m throwing in a fun cocktail that pairs well with this month’s seafood spread, thanks to Sammy Hagar’s Cocktail Hits

Let’s begin adorning the platter or “seacuterie” board with a staple that’s a must for any seafood lover, and that’s glistening slices of Gin-Cured Sockeye Salmon (recipe on page 48). Sockeye is preferred due to its low level of fat compared to Chinook (king) salmon. It’s also more flavorful than coho (silver),

chum (dog or Keta), or steelhead trout. When shopping for this recipe, select fresh, wild salmon that has been lightly handled and properly stored (below 40°F) prior to sale. The seacuterie board, incidentally, is a riff on the charcuterie board, which originated in France. Today, such boards are extremely popular due to their versatility and aesthetic appeal. The board offers a harmonious balance of flavors, textures, and colors. Beyond their culinary delight, seacuterie boards foster conviviality while encouraging sharing and conversation among friends and family at any gathering or event.

The next delicious bite to add is succulent Dungeness crab from our local waters. The Dungeness Crab & Artichoke Dip and Dungeness Crab & Sourdough Toast Points with a side of Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho (all three recipes on page 48) offers you and your guests two mouthwatering crab choices. When preparing the crab dip, the common mistakes cooks make

45

is adding too much crabmeat or using a mayonnaise not made with egg yolks. Eggs are essential to this recipe because the crab and mayonnaise unite to form a savory custard-like spread when baked. Adding additional crab or other ingredients will alter the egg-to-ingredient ratio, resulting in an oily disappointment.

For a taste of our ocean’s briny essence, make sure to include a smattering of crisp Bull Kelp Pickles (recipe on page 49), made from the forests of fresh bull kelp that thrive in our area. These coastal pickles are a nice and crunchy alternative to the garden cucumber. Speaking of pickling, the addition of Pickled Halibut (recipe also on page 49) will perk up any seacuterie

lineup. When making at home, be sure to cut the halibut in 1-inch pieces. The chunks should be slightly larger than bite-sized so the fish can maintain its cellular structure when pickled. For the pickling method, simply pour the cooled brine over the top of the fish, seal the jars by hand, and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Continuing to pay tribute to our region’s commitment to fresh, local seafood, don’t forget to round out the presentation with a display of pre-steamed marinated Mussels on the Half Shell (recipe on page 49). When shopping for mussels, look for unbroken shells that are glossy and rich in color. The mussels should have a clean and salty scent reminiscent of seawater.

46

When you get the mussels home, rinse them under cold water, lightly brush to remove any sand or grit, and remove the hairy beards that stick out of the shells.

Here’s how you do it: Gently hold the mussel in one hand and grab the beard with the other. The beard is the stringy mass attached to the side of the mussel. Pull the beard towards the bottom of the mussel where the clasp is. These beards tend to be stubborn, so pull firmly. You won’t crack open the shell. Once removed, discard the beards and the mussels are ready to go.

Of course, you can’t serve a seafood smorgasbord without a crisp, lip-smacking libation. A riff on the strawberry margarita, the refreshing Strawberita (recipe on page 49) welcomes the holy trinity of tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur. Be sure to shake, don’t blend, and then add the strawberry syrup, simple syrup, and sliced fresh berries.

And there you have it. A seafood seacuterie bonanza— Pacific Northwest-style.

RECIPES

Gin-Cured Sockeye Salmon

Serves 10 (2 ounces per serving)

½ cup Gin Botanicals, see below

1 cup granulated sugar

1½ cups salt

2 pounds fresh sockeye salmon fillet, skin on, pin bones removed Handful of fresh mint leaves (6 to 10)

Gin Botanicals:

3 tablespoons juniper berries

1 tablespoon coriander

1 teaspoon dried lemon zest

½ cinnamon stick

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon chamomile

3 cardamom pods, broken

¼ teaspoon fennel

3 black peppercorns

Place all ingredients for Gin Botanicals in a blender, grinder, or food processor. Give it a couple of pulses just to crack the spices, but do not grind them. Transfer to a bowl along with the salt and sugar. Mix well to combine. Next, lay out a sheet of aluminum foil about three times the size of the fillet. Sprinkle half the curing mixture evenly on the wrap. Place the salmon fillet skin-side down on the cure. Add the mint leaves across the fillet, then evenly cover the exposed flesh with a generous amount of the curing mixture. Wrap the fillet in foil and place on a baking sheet. Now place a second baking sheet on top of the fillet and hold it down to apply a light weight to the fillet. A couple soup cans work great for this. Transfer to refrigerator and keep in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. Remove the salmon from the refrigerator, rinse, and pat dry. Repeat the process (cure, foil, refrigerate for 24 hours) using new foil. You will repeat the process every 24 hours for 3 to 4 days depending on the size and width of your salmon fillet. The goal here is for the flesh to become slightly translucent and firm. The edges may be a bit saltier than the thicker middle part of the fillet. This is normal. To serve, slice as thin as possible (works well if the fillet is slightly frozen). Store any unused salmon in the refrigerator (wrapped in plastic wrap) for up to 1 week. You can also portion and freeze the salmon in airtight freezer-safe bags for up to 1 month.

Dungeness Crab & Artichoke Dip

Makes 2 cups

½ cup fresh Dungeness crabmeat, drained

½ cup artichoke hearts (unmarinated) coarsely chopped into ½-inch pieces

¼ cup Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, shredded

¼ cup yellow onion, peeled, cut into quarter sections, then sliced paper thin

1 cup Best Foods Mayonnaise

Italian flat-leaf parsley and lemon slice, for garnish

Add the Dungeness crab, artichoke hearts, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, yellow onion, and mayonnaise to a medium bowl. Mix well until combined. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator until needed.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Before serving, add the desired amount of crab mixture to a heatproof ramekin and place in the oven until an internal temperature of 140°F is achieved, or the mixture is browned on top and bubbling.

Remove from oven and top with fresh parsley and a lemon slice. Serve with warm, sliced French bread.

Dungeness Crab & Sourdough Toast Points with Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho

Serves 4

1 loaf fresh sourdough bread

4 teaspoons olive oil

¼ teaspoon kosher salt

¼ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper

1½ ounces picked fresh Dungeness crab meat

1 small heirloom tomato, seeded and diced

1 teaspoon fresh chives

¼ lemon, zested

Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho, recipe follows, optional

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Cut the sourdough bread into large triangles and remove the crust. Drizzle evenly with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 6 minutes. Note: You can toast for shorter or longer depending on your preference of crunchiness. Let cool to room temperature.

Add the Dungeness crab, tomatoes, chives, and lemon zest to a mixing bowl. Gently toss to combine. Spoon on top of the toast points and serve with a side of Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho, if desired.

Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho

Serves 4 (5 to 6 ounces per serving)

2 pounds multicolored heirloom tomatoes, quartered

¼ cup kosher salt

¼ teaspoon white pepper

¼ cup balsamic vinegar

cup extra virgin olive oil

Basil Oil, as needed, recipe follows

Place the quartered tomatoes in a shallow pan and salt them generously. Cover and place in the refrigerator overnight.

In a kitchen blender, add the tomatoes in four batches and purée on high. Add the pepper, vinegar, and olive oil. Continue to blend until creamy and smooth, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt. To serve, ladle some of the gazpacho into a small bowl and drizzle a little basil oil on top.

Basil Oil

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 fresh basil leaves

¼ teaspoon salt

Add the oil, basil, and salt to a blender, and blend well. Pass the contents through a coffeefilter to strain. Keep the basil oil in the refrigerator in an airtight container until ready to use for up to 5 days.

48

Bull Kelp Pickles

Makes 3 cups of pickles

3 cups fresh bull kelp stipe, sliced into -inch rounds

¼ teaspoons red pepper flakes

6 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

½ teaspoon dill seeds

1 tablespoon coriander seeds

2 cups white distilled vinegar

¾ cup water

3 tablespoons kosher salt

¼ cup granulated sugar

Place the sliced kelp rounds into a glass jar. Add the pepper flakes, garlic, mustard seeds, dill seeds, and coriander seeds. Add the vinegar, water, salt, and sugar to a small pot over high heat. Bring to a boil while stirring occasionally until the ingredients are dissolved. Remove from the heat and pour the hot brine into the jars until the kelp is completely covered. Seal the jars and store in the refrigerator for 3 days. The jars will keep refrigerated up to 4 months.

Pickled Halibut

Makes 1 (2-quart) jar

1 quart water

1 cup kosher salt

2 pounds fresh halibut fillet, skinned and cut into 1-inch pieces

Pickling & Spices

1 cup water

¾ cup distilled white vinegar

¾ cup apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds

1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, divided

6 garlic cloves, peeled, divided

3 bay leaves, divided

4 slices peeled fresh ginger

2 fresh thyme sprigs

½ yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced

½ fennel bulb, thinly sliced

1 carrot, peeled and thin

2 fresh lemon slices

Add 1 quart of water to a small pot over high heat and bring to a boil. Add the salt, remove the pot from the heat and allow the salt to completely dissolve. Then place the brine in the refrigerator to cool completely. When cool, add the halibut cubes, cover, and return to the refrigerator for 12 hours. Remove the halibut from the brine and rinse and pat dry the pieces; set aside. Add the 1 cup of water, vinegars, mustard seeds, 1 tablespoon of the black peppercorn, 3 garlic cloves, 2 bay leaves, and the ginger to a saucepot over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and add the halibut. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and refrigerate until cooled completely. Sterilize 2 glass quart jars (or 4 smaller pint jars). Add the remaining garlic cloves, thyme sprig, and the 1 teaspoon of black peppercorns. Note: Divide evenly if using multiple jars. Carefully remove the halibut from the pickling brine and place in the jar(s), layering with the onions, fennel, carrots, and lemon slices. Finish with the remaining bay leaf. Next, strain the pickling brine to remove any corns or unwanted debris.

Pour over the top of the fish until it is fully submerged, and the liquid reaches the top of the jars, almost overflowing. Seal the jars and refrigerate for up to 5 weeks. Serve with crackers, bread, on a salad, or by itself straight out of the jar.

Mussels on the Half Shell

Serves 6 to 8

1¼ cups dry white wine

1½ pounds (about 30 to 35) live mussels, scrubbed and debearded

1 hard-boiled egg, halved and pushed through a medium mesh sieve

3 tablespoons white wine vinegar

½ cup finely chopped onion

2 teaspoons small capers, drained and rinsed

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh Italian-flat leaf parsley

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh chives

1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh chervil

¼ cup olive oil

¼ teaspoon sea salt

¼ teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper

Add the wine to a heavy (5- to 6-quart) pot over medium-high heat. When the wine begins to bubble, add the mussels, and cover the pot with a lid. Allow the mussels to open. As soon as they open, remove, and transfer them to a shallow baking dish to cool. Keep checking the pot for opened mussels. Discard any closed mussels after 8 minutes. When the mussels are cool enough to handle, carefully detach the meat and discard half of the shell. Set aside. In a small bowl, add the minced egg, vinegar, onion, capers, mustard, parsley, chives, and chervil. Whisk well to combine, then slowly add the olive oil while whisking until fully combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the mussels to the marinade and gently toss to coat. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour and up to 6 hours to chill. Remove the mussels and arrange one mussel in each reserved shell and transfer to a serving platter. Spoon a little of the chilled marinade over the top of each mussel and serve.

Little Boat, Big Trip

Just in time to inspire your own spring endeavors, revel in the ASPEN CARBON CAT’s epic adventure in Puget Sound to test the mettle of the little boat that could.

Necessity is often the mother of invention, and such could be said about the creation of the Aspen Carbon Cat.

Local boat builder and adventurer Larry Graf, founder of the Burlington-based Aspen Power Catamarans, was inspired after realizing that he and other Aspen owners were often frustrated by typical RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) tenders. The size of the RIB often meant wasting otherwise usable space, the tubes were slippery when boarding, and the boats have a limited lifetime, meaning expensive tenders eventually either need to be retubed or replaced. Graf knew what he wanted—an efficient, hard-bottom tender that was lightweight, stable, and durable.

So, he got to work on his own design: the Carbon Cat. Valuing the stability and performance of Aspen catamarans, his first move was to keep the twin hull surfaces aft on the new tender, but as he refined the design, he included a fine entry forward to cleave the water and keep the ride soft and the boat dry. This hull shape also allows for a smooth and level interior floor to provide additional comfort. The hybrid hull is crafted from the same high-tech materials and composites as those used in the aerospace industry: carbon fiber E glass and pure vinyl ester resin combined with Divenacell core sections that make the boats both light and remarkably strong. Other innovative features include a cushioned seating cube that can be used for rowing or motoring; premium removable Rail Blaze running lights; integrated oarlocks; 3” EVA interior hull side flotation for buoyancy; and versatile Burnewiin adapters that can house rod holders, cleats, and more.

Currently available in three sizes—the 9’2” T9, the 10’2” T10, and 11’2” T11—the Carbon Cat models were tested to meet or exceed USCG requirements for level flotation and stability, which include pulling the drain plugs and air chambers, loading them with 320 pounds of concrete weights, and filling them with water to ensure they still float. Not only are the boats remarkably stable, they are fast and fuel efficient. After spending the summer of 2023 cruising aboard his 32’ Aspen with a Carbon Cat in tow, Graf was impressed with how the Cat performed as a tender carrying people, supplies, and equipment, but he wanted to really test the Cat’s mettle.

Thus, in late September 2023, Graf, his dog Daisy, and friend Dale Dahl set out in a pair of Carbon Cats for a multi-day, 188-mile-long trip around Puget Sound.

Graf’s T10 cruised out of Anacortes powered by a 9.9hp outboard, and Dahl manned his T11 with a 15hp Yamaha running alongside Graf’s smaller tender. The forecast was for calm, but after exiting the Rosario Strait, they encountered building wind and seas in the eastern part of the Strait of Juan De Fuca. After 15 miles exposed to the Strait, they hoped

things would temper down as they neared Port Townsend, but with 20-knot winds against the heavy currents coming out of Admiralty Inlet, they found themselves powering into short, steep chop. It wasn’t the easiest as they ran through waves and currents, but the Carbon Cats remained dry and seaworthy. They stopped in Port Ludlow that first night after an exhilarating 45-mile journey.

The next day they continued farther into Puget Sound, enjoying the morning’s relative calm as they rounded Point No Point. Later in the day as they skirted the eastern shore of Bainbridge Island, the wind piped up out of the north gusting to 28 mph, but Graf said the Carbon Cat’s design worked well in these real-world conditions. Speeds slowed to about 14 mph, but the boats stayed on plane with only occasional spray. After another day of open-air cruising, they careened the boats in the sand on the lee side of Blake Island for their second night. The optional Beachmaster fold-down transom wheels allowed the boats to easily roll up the beach and above the tideline. After a nice night at the state park, the trio cruised past Alki, across Elliott Bay with the Space Needle and city as a backdrop, before rounding Magnolia and coming into Shilshole to refuel. Graf and his dog Daisy had only used around 6.6 gallons in the approximately 75 miles completed so far, and the larger T11 that Dahl ran only used 7.2 gallons, remarkably little fuel for this type of cruising. The boats are quick (18-21 mph) when running in good conditions, but with higher winds, waves, and currents they cruised at a still very respectable 12-14 mph on average. After checking in with Northwest Yachting’s own Craig Perry during the pit stop, the Carbon Cats shoved off and headed north. Afternoon conditions were tough as they battled through more wind and waves before the seas finally calmed down around Mukilteo. They had a nice run up the Saratoga Passage into LaConner, and through the Swinomish Channel for their return to Anacortes.

Their journey proved exciting and productive. The weather was less than ideal, but the idea was to have an adventure and to see how the Carbon Cats held up on a trip that most people would never attempt in a tender. Graf thinks he’s more than proved that these little boats can perform safely and effectively, even on a trip normally reserved for larger, more substantial vessels. After completing the trip, he reflected: “We have gone through stuff no one goes through with a dinghy, and still managed to have a lot of fun!” Even Daisy seemed unfazed by the sea adventure, although the team did admit she seemed pretty happy to be back at the dock and to her usual doggie bed.

Bottom's Up

Go into the big drink armed with MARK YUASA’S tips on pulling bottom-dwellers from the depths and on the spring trout and salmon fisheries.

Many anglers are looking forward to trying their luck this spring and summer in several coastal and western Strait of Juan de Fuca marine areas for lingcod, certain rockfish species, and other highly sought after bottom-dwellers.

On the coast, Ilwaco (Marine Area 1), Westport-Ocean Shores (Marine Area 2), La Push (Marine Area 3) and Neah Bay (Marine Area 4 west of Bonilla-Tatoosh) are now open daily through October 19. The daily aggregate limit is nine bottom fish and includes a sub-limit of seven rockfish. The daily limit is two lingcod and one cabezon per angler, and there is no minimum size restriction. (FYI: Retaining copper rockfish, quillback rockfish, and vermilion rockfish in Marine Areas 1, 2, 3 and the western coastal portion of 4 is not allowed in May, June, and July, as recent scientific assessments for the three rockfish species indicate populations are likely healthy but smaller than previously understood, according to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) fishery managers.)

In the western Strait of Juan de Fuca, Neah Bay (Marine Area 4 east of Bonilla-Tatoosh) is open year-round for bottom fishing, and lingcod fishing is also open daily through mid-October. The daily aggregate limit is nine bottom fish and includes a sub-limit of seven black, blue /deacon, yellowtail, and widow rockfish. The daily limit is two lingcod and one cabezon per angler and there is no minimum size restriction.   The coastal bottom fish limit doesn’t include halibut, which has a daily limit of one halibut. Fishing for, retaining, or possessing sixgill, sevengill, and thresher sharks is closed in all marine areas. Yelloweye rockfish retention is prohibited in all areas of Washington and must be properly released immediately. A descending device must be on board all vessels and rigged for immediate use when fishing for or possessing

bottomfish and halibut.

Many inner-Puget Sound marine areas open for lingcod fishing from May 1 to June 15. The daily limit is one lingcod and minimum size is 26 inches with a maximum size of 36 inches.

Other Spring Fisheries: Trout

While the statewide lowland lakes trout fishing opens April 23-24, anglers looking to get a jump start have plenty of options right now on lakes that opened March 1 or are open year-round. Depending upon the severity of late winter weather, some lakes east of the Cascade Crest may still be iced over, although warmer weather conditions should provide some trout fishing opportunities.

In Grant County, Martha and Upper Caliche lakes near George, Washington, should be good for 10- to 14-inch rainbow trout. Quincy and Burke lakes have a decent amount of 12- to 13-inch fingerling rainbow trout plus a fair number of larger carryover fish. Other Grant County lakes worth a try are Dry Falls, Lenice, Lenore, Cascade, North Potholes Reserve, and Nunnally. Lakes offering bank fishing only off the Tucannon River in Columbia County are Rainbow, Deer, and Watson. Spring and Blue lakes are open year-round and will be stocked this spring. Look for trout in Pampa Pond in Whitman County and Fish Hook Pond in Walla Walla County is open year-round. Both are open for bank fishing only and the ponds warm early, providing spring opportunities. Looking for a bit of privacy? Within the Quincy Lakes Unit of the Columbia Basin Wildlife Area there are many walk-in lakes including Dusty, Cliff, Crystal, and Cup. These lakes can be good for trout in the 12- to 14-inch range with some up to 20 inches. Trout are also lurking in the greater Spokane region at Liberty, Amber, Downs, and Medical lakes. Coffeepot Lake in Lincoln County

is open with selective gear rules in effect. In the northeastern section of Washington, try Deer Lake in Stevens County.

Salmon

Spring salmon anglers have several options right now including Sekiu-Pillar Point (Marine Area 5) in the western Strait of Juan de Fuca, which is open daily from April 1-30. Anglers should take note that while there are closing dates, Marine Areas 5, 10 and 11 could close sooner than expected, so making plans to head out in the front end of the Area 5 opener will likely guarantee you time on the water. In Marine Area 10, the winter Chinook fishery guidelines are 4,953 total encounters, 953 unmarked encounters, and 4,181 sublegal encounters. In Marine Area 11, the guideline is 1,191 total encounters, 259 unmarked encounters, and 816 sublegal encounters. In Marine Area 5, the guideline is 3,707 sublegal encounters. As of the deadline for this magazine’s issue, central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10) and south-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11) were to remain open Wednesdays through Saturdays for hatchery winter Chinook fishing through April 15 but were dependent on guidelines. Anglers should check the WDFW website for any changes.

Another option is southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13) south of the Narrows Bridge, open daily for salmon fishing with catches being fair at times for winter hatchery Chinook. Lastly, don’t overlook the Columbia River main stem where fishing is currently open for hatchery spring Chinook. A few lower-river tributaries were also scheduled to be open for spring salmon fishing.

RACING SHEET

School of Rock

DOUG HANSEN recaps a windy, wild, and woolly Blakely Rock race, always a much anticipated kick-off to the spring sailing season, that this year really tested teams' fortitudes.

March is a bit of a perplexing time in Seattle. The city is still very much in the depths of winter, but for the local sailboat racing crowd, it marks the beginning of the spring racing scene—though it often feels like the start drags spring into Puget Sound kicking and screaming. The first so-called spring sailing season event is the Center Sound Series, hosted out of Shilshole Marina by the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle.

The initial race of the three-part series is a short 21-mile lap around Blakely Rock just off Bainbridge Island. It is a vital shakedown for racing crews returning to the water after a winter hiatus. It’s a ritual of sorts, akin to blowing off the dust from months away from the racecourse, and yet, with the unpredictability of weather, the race can swiftly transform into an exercise of chipping off the rust when things don’t go as planned. This year’s Blakely Rock race unfolded in the middle of an epic storm cycle on March 2. Cold fronts covered the entire region with intense weather, meaning plenty of snow in the mountains and relentless wind and rain throughout the Puget Sound region.

The race got underway in relatively challenging conditions, with winds gusting at 20 knots around the starting area as the fleets dialed up and prepared for their starts. The reverse start saw smaller and slower boats setting off first, allowing them to get partially up the course as the faster vessels waited their turn. As the sequence rolled along, the wind began to

mellow, and many boats shifted gears quickly to power up their sails and keep things moving along in the lighter breeze. The entire fleet’s convergence on Blakely Rock coincided with the faster boats zipping through, creating a few tense moments as boats with wildly different speeds and maneuverability had to duck and weave around one another to avoid contact. This sudden drop in wind speed seemed to hit a low spot right as the fleets were converging and sailing around the rocks, making it a tough call of which spinnaker to hoist and whether the wind was expected to stay down or pipe back up.

Many boats opted to hoist their larger full-sized kites rather than cut down anything, and almost simultaneously, the lighter breeze disappeared. Dark clouds gathered on the southern horizon and worked their way over the fleet, bringing snappy puffs and flurries of snow through the racecourse. The wind pumped up into the high teens, with the larger puffs reaching into the mid-20s; several boats even saw big blasts up to 30 knots. This wind stayed with the fleet down the course and made for some very tense but extremely memorable moments. Onboard the TP52 Smoke, we touched 20 knots of boat speed several times in the stronger puffs.

As the storm cell continued its northward journey through the fleet, the breeze shifted towards the west, making for a quick run to

the leeward mark off of the Edmonds oil tanks for most of the fleet. Thanks to the shift, some boats did not need to gybe during the heavy wind, making it an all-out drag race to get to the leeward mark, drop their kites, and head towards the finish.

Along the final beat back to Shilshole, the wind began to ease up a little bit. It still gave plenty of power, but not the monster puffs that were dominating the spinnaker run. We even got some touches of sunshine poking through the clouds as the bulk of the fleet made their way through the finish line and back to the dock to pack up the boats. After racing, the Corinthian Yacht Club clubhouse was in full swing, with drinks flowing and some well-earned chili for hungry racers looking to warm up after a wild day.

A standout performance came from the Lafitte Family onboard the J70 Lift Ticket, a 22-foot boat in a fiercely competitive fleet. They pushed the limits, flying downwind, overtaking larger vessels, and securing an impressive first place in their class.

The Center Sound Series Blakely Rock race marked the beginning of the Northwest big boat racing season and offered an exciting and unpredictable event. The mix of challenging weather and the determination of sailing crews made for a memorable experience, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
