Welcome to Northwood Schools The decision about your child’s school is perhaps the most important choice you will ever take on his or her behalf. It is one that I know parents will take with the utmost care and attention. When, back in 1984 as a young teacher, Katharine Colquhoun started a tiny school just off Broomwood Road, she had a clear vision of what education should be all about. The founding principles were, and still are, based on a belief in self-discipline and responsibility; in tolerance and a sense of duty; in firmness, fairness, and respect for others; and, above all, in a child’s right to be a child. Since that time, Broomwood Hall Lower and Upper Schools, and subsequently Northcote Lodge, have become firmly established as some of London’s foremost pre-prep and preparatory schools, sending pupils on at 11 and 13 to all the leading senior schools, both day and boarding. In September 2020, the addition of Northwood Senior expanded our offering to GCSE, thus fulfilling the group’s long held desire to extend what we know is a highly successful approach to education through to the secondary stage. So what makes a successful school? My answer would be a happy, stimulating environment where each child’s individual strengths and abilities are nurtured to the
best of their abilities. Yes, we believe in hard work, but it is also up to us to make sure that children love being at school; after all, happy children learn and thrive. Our commitment is not just to prepare our pupils for a world of work that is changing rapidly, but also to ensure that they enjoy what they are doing. And so, whilst our children attain excellent results – indeed, despite being primarily nonselective schools, we hold our own against those that do select when it comes to scholarships and prizes, we do all we can to ensure that this success does not come with the all-too-common levels of unnecessary stress that seem to plague the education system. We believe that education is about so much more than simply passing exams. Preparation for life is also about character, confidence, collaboration, compassion, and resilience, so it’s important that children leave our schools understanding that whilst not everything in life is easy, there is a real sense of achievement to be gained from sticking at something and overcoming obstacles. We encourage our pupils to set exacting targets for themselves, which we find are almost always higher than those set by others. Children want to succeed. At Northwood Schools, we aim to show them how. Although on the face of it, some of our schools may look very traditional, our approach and attitudes to teaching and

learning is anything but. We embrace the most up-to-date educational thinking to ensure that our teaching is modern, innovative and at the forefront of best educational practice. We offer a wide range of subjects, sports and activities and aim to identify and nurture the different talents in each of our children, whether that be in the classroom, on the sports field, the art room, on stage or in the concert hall. Pastoral Care and Wellbeing We pride ourselves on our outstanding pastoral care. We strongly believe that a child will only achieve their full potential if they are both happy and confident. We believe in healthy bodies and healthy minds. Our kitchens produce healthy, nutritious and delicious meals which both children and staff enjoy and eat together. We have tutors, mentors, school counsellors and matrons always on hand. More importantly, our strong family ethos means that every child is known by all staff.
Sport We take sport seriously at Northwood schools. It benefits children both physically and mentally and develops resilience and perseverance. Our regular sport lessons provide a focus for co-operation and healthy competition and bring a chance to let off steam – and to shine. Every child has a chance to shine.
Art and Design Technology In Art, children experiment with a range of media; including paints, pastels and printing to name but a few. In DT they learn to work with various construction materials as they progress through school. Trips to museums and galleries are regular features as are visits from local artists and artwork is entered for national competitions and exhibited in London and around the schools.

Social Responsibility Social responsibility and philanthropy is an integral part of a Northwood education. Each school not only raises money for a local ‘Charity of the Year’ but also supports NAEF, a charitable foundation that runs St George’s School in Gondar, Ethiopia.
