Dear colleagues,
These are challenging and exciting times.
North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust are committed to developing you as an individual, to being and becoming the best version of yourself to help us on our journey.
Our Trust’s leadership charter sets out the values leaders require to help us to develop and deliver our vision. This was produced in collaboration with you via the Our Trust, Our Future platform.
Our aim in developing this programme is to offer you the opportunity to enhance your leadership skills and be a pivotal part in delivering the highest quality care to our local population.
The programme offers a range of development opportunities delivered through a variety of modes.
In sponsoring this programme, I am demonstrating my commitment to supporting leaders across the organisation and I hope that you will become an excellent leader, role modelling and displaying the leadership charter on an on-going basis.

Programme details
Delegates
This programme is open to anyone who has leadership responsibility within their role.
Overview
As a leader, you have the potential to play a significant role in the Trust and have a major impact on patient care and the people around you.
This programme is designed to develop your leadership awareness, skills, knowledge and behaviours.
It will support you to contribute to Trust leadership and motivate others around you to contribute to, and deliver, our ambitious vision.
Structure
The programme is delivered in six sessions, which provides an opportunity to practise and consolidate what has been learned between the formal sessions.
The programme includes:
Access to a virtual platform
A Myers Briggs Type indicator (MBTI) report
The programme will utilise Microsoft Teams as a platform for each cohort with files and learning shared for each session. This will then allow an opportunity to pose questions and explore learning to determine impact and effect of delivered sessions.
There will be allocated facilitators for each cohort who will manage the platform and make sure that learning is shared and conversations are tracked and recorded to demonstrate achievement and progress.
Outcomes
By the end of the programme you will have:
An increased understanding of your role and your leadership skills and their impact
An enhanced awareness of your behaviours, style and how you relate to others
An increased confidence in your ability to lead
An increase confidence to develop and implement change and improvement
A stronger and more effective peer network which supports collaboration and sharing of learning and best practice
A greater understanding of structures, processes and strategic alignment
An increased understanding of high performing teams and how to support, influence and lead others.

Participation in this programme requires your commitment to attend and participate in each activity and session in full.
Programme content
Understanding your leadership
This session is designed to introduce you to the programme and its format. It is an opportunity to meet your fellow delegates and ask questions. You will be introduced to some concepts around self-awareness, emotional intelligence and using the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) psychometric tool, you will explore types.
Following the session you will have the opportunity of a one-to-one meeting with your facilitator to explore your individual profile in more detail. You will also be directed to online learning material to explore following the session.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
• Gained an improved understanding of your own personal style, preferences and type
• Increased your understanding of how different personality types can best work together
• Explored strengths and preferences you will typically have
• Understand how you can use this knowledge to be an effective leader
• Completed a personal development plan to outline your commitment to your lifelong learn-ing process and involvement in the programme

• Make decisions and communicate them in an open and honest manner
• Foster greater collaboration with other Trust’s and local authorities
• Lead by example and live the Trust’s values
Leading with compassion
This session is designed to introduce you to key concepts of compassionate leadership. Building upon the work undertaken with Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) you will explore how compassionate leadership manifests and the impact on team working.
Through utilisation of a tool you will begin to consider self compassion. You will discuss and explore how these impact on people and begin to explore development opportunities.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
• Explored key concepts of compassionate leadership
• Understand what compassionate leadership means to you as an individual and leader
• Discussed the impact of compassion in practice
• Increased awareness of tools that increase compassionate working
• Utilised a model to explore self compassion
• Explored inclusion and compassion
• Understand how compassionate leadership enhances staff wellbeing

Programme content
Leading teams and talent
This session is designed to introduce you to the concepts of a high performing team and how your leadership can impact and shape those around you. You will be introduced to theories of talent development and start to explore your impact in relation to your team. Leadership is a key component of team success.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
Greater understanding of the importance of leadership on team dynamics
Further knowledge on high performing teams
Increased understanding of talent development and the impact of your leadership on talent development
Increased awareness of tools which can support team development
Understand the importance of psychological safety
Explore reward and recognition and how this influences engagement
Explore how to challenge behaviours linked to customer care charter
Leadership attributes
• Provide people at all levels with the right training and development
• Make decisions and communicate them in an open and honest manner
• Be clear on our vision, purpose and priorities
• Provide good quality appraisals and one to ones
• Reward and recognise staff contributions and efforts
Thinking and acting strategically
This session will allow you to explore how the current environment and the potential environment can be expressed through a strategy. You will use tools such as SWOT, PESTLE and McKinsey 7s to help understand the necessary elements of high quality strategic planning.
Strategy is the structure that directs the through line to the patient all elements of work should be included and expressed within a strategy. You will explore how you as a leader can translate the strategy into meaning for your teams and learn about tools that can turn meaning into action.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
• Increased your understanding of strategy, strategic thinking, strategic planning and acting strategically
• Explored tools to support strategy development
• Reviewing strategies from own organisation and regional ICB/ICS

• Create a just and learning culture
• Share the right information with the right people
Programme content
Leadership coaching
This session will introduce you to the key concepts of coaching and mentoring. Effective coaching demands a mind-set that requires individuals to provide and develop their own solutions to challenges that they face.
It builds relationships, reduces dependency and research has shown it improves performance. You will practice coaching using the GROW model.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
Developed an increased understanding of the GROW coaching framework
Understand the concepts of coaching and mentoring
Discussed how coaching can support performance

Facilitate a culture of continuous improvement
Inspire, motivate and assure colleagues
Provide good quality appraisals and one to ones
Address poor performance and behaviour
Getting things done
This session is about converting planning into action and the dynamic between process and people. Utilising a range of project management and change tools you will explore their usage and begin to consider the human elements of change, optimising engagement and the tracking and problem solving of projects.
As a first line manager you will need to deal with the emotional impact of change on individuals, deal with uncertainty and support the emerging culture.
Outcomes
By the end of the session you will have:
Explored your responsibility and impact as a leader during change
Utilised Kotter’s 8 step process to understand change
Understand the human elements of change
Explored the relevance of the Kubler-Ross curve
Using your MBTI profile for service improvement and people dynamics
Leadership attributes
Be clear on our vision, purpose and key priorities
Facilitate a culture of continuous improvement
Initiate and drive change
Foster greater collaboration with other Trust’s and local authorities
