Course Overview

The course aims to prepare learners to study Humanities and Social Science in Higher Education. It provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required to progress to Higher Education or to enhance your employment potential.

Entry Requirements

Applications can be made from learners who do not hold any formal qualifications; however, a skills assessment and an interview will need to be undertaken to determine suitability for the course. Learners with GCSE Maths and English Language at grade C or above do not need to undertake the skills assessment but will have an interview. Applicants should have a positive disposition and deal well with challenges and be motivated, reliable, mature and have evidence of life experience.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Teaching and learning will take place by a process of lectures, tutorials, seminars, discussions, demonstrations, blended learning and group work. Learners will be assessed by using a range of assessment strategies including presentations, essays and class tests.

Career Prospects

Successful completion of the course allows entry onto a wide range of degree programmes including Law, History, English, Psychology, Counselling, Criminology, Teacher Training* and Social Work.

*To enter a career in teaching, a B grade is required in both GCSE English and Maths, and in some cases, Science.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Science) is suitable for mature students wanting to study a full-time course at Neath College. Students will cover a range of core subjects in modules such as Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Physics and Mathematics. This Science qualification is designed for learners wishing to make their careers in local government, national health trusts, the Ministry of Defence, police forces, schools, FE colleges and universities, analytical and forensic laboratories, environmental conservation agencies, telecom agencies, and oil and gas companies.
