Course Overview

The Computing HNC aims to provide you with a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of computing to meet the demands of employers in the computing sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. We will equip you with a thorough grounding in computing principles, knowledge and understanding suitable for a range of careers within the computing sector or progression to further study.

You’ll complete units focussed on areas such as database design and development, programming and networking, and will learn about the skills required to manage a successful computing project. You will also have the opportunity to develop a range of transferable skills including teamworking and problem-solving strategies.

Entry Requirements

Typical entry requirements require applicants to have a minimum of 32 UCAS tariff points, five GCSEs (to include English and Maths) at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent qualifications. Applications are considered on their individual merits and we welcome applications from mature students who may be unable to meet the formal entry requirements but can demonstrate the ability to study at this level through personal, professional or other educational experience.

Progression Opportunities

Students successfully completing this course can progress onto the second year of the Computing HND programme.

Career Prospects

Graduates have employment prospects in ICT related disciplines, including software engineer, software developer, information manager, website designers and technical support.

The Computing HND programme is a two-year higher education course designed for individuals who wish to develop a career in the exciting and rapidly evolving Computing and IT sector. This qualification will provide you with knowledge and practical experience in programming, networking, application development and database management systems among other areas. In addition, you will develop other core skills required for employment within the computing industry including completing a computing research project and developing transferable skills such as teamworking and problem-solving strategies.

Course Overview

If you already have knowledge of computing and want to build on your studies so far, this course could be for you. This is a one-year top-up qualification that will allow you to gain a full bachelor’s degree. It builds on the HND Computing or other relevant Level 5 qualification and will suit anyone interested in computing, information systems and e-commerce. On the course you may cover a range of topics, including usability engineering, emerging trends, data warehousing and data mining. You will also have the opportunity to undertake a major project to develop your research skills and abilities. Computers are fundamental to many industries and you will develop skills in many fields to be able to develop a flexible career in the sector.

Successful completion of the HND Computing or equivalent qualification in a related discipline.

Progression Opportunities

You may progress to a variety of postgraduate computerrelated courses. Graduates of this programme could also consider the Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE PCET) delivered at NPTC Group of Colleges.
