Prokureur se bedrogsaak uitgestel

MARTI WILL

• Onsedelike aanranding: vyf jaar gevangenisstraf

• Seksuele grooming: agt jaar gevangenisstraf (twee klagte)

• Seksuele aanranding: drie jaar gevangenisstraf (vyf klagte)

• Gedwonge seksuele aanranding: vyf

jaar gevangenisstraf

Potential tapped

The Matjhabeng Investment Summit aimed to secure investments of R100 billion to revive the local economy and was described as a bold step towards revitalising the region’s economic prospects

Executive Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha outlined these ambitious targets in his opening address at the summit held in Welkom on 16 October The two-day event sought to provide a platform for dialogue between public and private sectors with the aim of unlocking investment opportunities in the economically challenged municipality

In his address, Khalipha highlighted the severe economic decline triggered by the closure of local mines, which resulted in high unemployment and a struggling economy throughout Matjhabeng

To counter this decline, the municipality developed a Local Economic Development strategy aligned with the National Development Plan's vision, declaring Matjhabeng an energy hub designed to attract investment and create employment opportunities

“Our target for this summit is to secure R100 billion in investments, building upon the success of a previous summit that garnered R55 billion in pledges Pledges alone are insufficient action is critical We want tangible outcomes that translate into job opportunities for our people,” the mayor said

Khalipha emphasised the municipality’s commitment to ethical governance and partnerships with reputable service providers to combat corruption The summit focused on actionable plans to ensure sustainable economic growth, prioritising job creation and transparent municipal operations

“As leadership, we aim to restore the economic vitality of the municipality and provide opportunities for its residents,” the mayor stated The summit drew participants from the business sector, including mining houses, as well as the public sector Free State Premier

Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae attended to support the initiative

In her State of the Province Address in February, Premier Letsoha-Mathae declared 2024 a year for “unleashing the economic potential of the Free State”

The Matjhabeng Investment Summit represents a testament to this commitment, showcasing the province’s dedication to fostering an environment conducive to investment and growth

Matjhabeng’s proactive approach to sourcing investments has already borne fruit, with the municipality securing a substantial R5,5 billion investment from American sources and the energy sector This investment aims to transform the Goldfields region into a hub of economic opportunity, aligning with the provincial vision of renewal, action, and inclusive growth

Addressing hundreds of potential investors, Premier Letsoha-Mathae emphasised the importance of establishing proper foundations to create a favourable business environment

She highlighted the need for:

■ reliable infrastructure;

■ good governance;

■ clean towns; and

■ job creation

“If we can get these basics right, I can assure you, investors will not hesitate to invest in Matjhabeng,” she said

The premier stressed that contractors with government tenders and projects bear social responsibility to contribute to communities and create local opportunities

“To further support economic development, the government plans to provide land to the municipality for building student accommodation, creating job opportunities and stimulating local economic activity The summit serves as a platform for stakeholders to collaborate, innovate, and drive economic growth This initiative has the potential to transform the province’s economic landscape”

Welkom runners’ marathon dreams dashed by weather

MARTI WILL

A group of runners from Welkom saw their Cape Town Marathon 2025 dreams crushed when severe winds and dangerous weather conditions forced organisers to cancel the race at the last minute

Among the disappointed athletes was wellknown Team Vitality Running Club member

Nkhetheni Masupa, who had travelled to Cape Town specifically for the marathon as part of his preparation for an upcoming international competition

“My plan was to use this marathon as my final preparation for the New York City Marathon happening in just two weeks (2 November), together with my running partner, Abe Nkomo,” Masupa said The pair will compete in New York following an invitation from the Abbott World Marathon Majors to compete in their respective age

groups This year ’ s Abbott WMM Marathon Tours & Travel Age Group World Championships are being held within the New York City Marathon, with the 2026 event announced to take place at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon

The Abbott WMM Age Group World Championships is an annual event for elite runners worldwide who qualify through a global ranking system based on their age group performances

According to Masupa, the Cape Town Marathon has been aiming for recognition as a Major Marathon, but those aspirations suffered a setback when the race was cancelled at the eleventh hour following severe wind gusts that damaged structures before the starting gun could sound

Approximately 25,000 athletes expected to complete the race were alerted at 05:00 on 19 October that the race, scheduled to begin at 06:15 at Green Point, had been cancelled “The decision to cancel the race was made at

04:45, only an hour and 30 minutes before the start Many athletes, including over 30 Welkom runners, were either on their way to the venue or already at the start point warming up when the announcement was made,” Masupa said

The Cape Town Marathon has been working towards gaining Abbott World Marathon Majors status to be recognised as one of the world's most prestigious races

Currently, seven marathons belong to this elite club: Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and Sydney

The cancellation represents a significant setback for the Cape Town event’s ambitions to join this exclusive group, particularly given the international attention the race has been receiving in recent years For the Welkom contingent, the disappointment was particularly acute given the extensive preparation and travel arrangements made for what was expected to be a crucial race in their athletic calendars
