SINCE 2018, a staggering 57 attorneys have been disbarred for professional misconduct, with some stealing between R1 5 million and R5 million from their clients, according to Fidelity Fund reports
“These abuses erode faith in the legal system,” the Legal Practitioners Fidelity Fund (LPFF) said in a statement We are raising awareness publicly, transparently and community by community ”
The LPFF is a statutory body established under the Legal Practice Act, with the mandate to protect South
Africans from financial loss due to attorney theft or dishonesty
In order to restore public confidence in South Africa’s legal profession, the LPFF is launching a community outreach programme
The initiative will be unveiled at an Imbizo-style engagement on Saturday, 25 October from 10:00 to 12:00, at the Sizakele Konzi Community Hall on Jabavu Street in KwaNobuhle
The event is expected to bring together representatives from the Legal Practice Council (LPC) and affected communities to address the crisis of trust in the legal system
In an interview with PE Express, LPFF Chief Executive Officer Mot-
latsi Molefe shared practical steps vulnerable communities can take to protect themselves from unscrupulous legal practitioners
“The public must ask to see the following and take these steps to confirm the status of a practitioner,” Molefe explained “The lawyer must have a Fidelity Fund Certificate, which is issued by the LPC every year The public has a right to see this certificate, and they may confirm with the Legal Practice Council regarding a practitioner’s registration ”
The weekend event will mark the beginning of a national awareness campaign designed to educate the public on how to report dishonest
attorneys and claim compensation when money or property is stolen
The event will equip members of the public with essential knowledge, such as how to verify a legal practitioner’s status online
“The public may check the FFC status of a practitioner on the LPC and FFC websites A direct call to the provincial LPC will also yield favourable results,” Molefe shared
For anyone who suspects they have been victims of attorney misconduct, Molefe advises the public to contact the LPC in circumstances where they suspect that their money has been abused by practitioners “so that the LPC may confirm this and take disci-
plinary action if necessary
“The public may also approach the LPFF in the same circumstances, and action may be taken between the two organisations through working together ” Molefe added that the LPFF is taking a multi-pronged approach to address these systemic issues
“The LPFF is working to manage the risk of the Fund through inspections of trust accounts held by practitioners in their law firms, and training in conjunction with the LPC on trust accounts and the Legal Practice Act,” Molefe revealed Further information is available at www.fidfund.co.za

THE Kariega and Despatch community came together in spectacular fashion recently when Harcourts UD hosted their Music Trivia evening, raising R76 211 10 for Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC)
The successful fundraiser attracted 180 attendees and featured music trivia, live auctions, and numerous lucky draw prizes
Speaking to UD Express on the motivation behind this donation, Charlotte Vermaak, Harcourts UD’s Principal, said they are aware of the charities doing important work within their community, and each year they make a point of choosing a different organisation to support through their fundraising efforts
“This year, we wanted to focus our attention on Despatch specifically, and one of our team members mentioned that Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre was in need of support We discussed it as a team, and it was a unanimous decision to get behind Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre,” said Vermaak
“It felt like a wonderful opportunity to make a meaningful difference right here in our own community ”
The music trivia event wasn’t their first charity event Vermaak said that their team has hosted a number of fundraisers over the years
“Organising an event of this nature is always a big undertaking and requires a great deal of commitment, planning, and teamwork to pull off successfully,” she said
“Our team truly rose to the occasion and did an absolutely fantastic job We began sourcing donations for the fundraiser and sponsorships for lucky draw prizes About two months before the event, we started marketing the Music Trivia evening and selling tickets This year, we were thrilled to host 180 attendees
“Our DJ from MMM Music was absolutely phenomenal We also included fun competitions and live auctions during the evening, which added to the excitement and helped boost our fundraising efforts Overall, it was a true team effort and such a rewarding experience seeing everyone come together for a great cause,” Vermaak shared
“The community response was nothing short of amazing Not only in attending the event but

also in the way so many individuals and businesses contributed through donations and sponsorships of lucky draw prizes
“Without that kind of community support, we simply wouldn't have been able to raise such a substantial amount Every contribution, whether it was R100 or R1000, truly made a difference; every drop fills the bucket, after all ”
Vermaak made special mention of the Harcourts Foundation and
the African Pioneer Group, both of whom made generous contributions to their fundraising efforts prior to the evening
They also had several guests who went above and beyond during the auctions, bidding generously and adding to the overall spirit of giving that made the evening so special
She added that she believes this donation will make a meaningful impact at Oosterland Child and Youth Care Centre, as it’s
an amount they wouldn’t otherwise have had access to, and she knows it will go a long way in helping to meet their day-to-day needs
“Oosterland CYCC’s list of requirements is extensive and covers both essential and ongoing items that are vital to the well-being and care of the children These include toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, roll-on, shampoo, and sanitary towels; cleaning materials for their sev-
en residential houses; and general maintenance and building needs
“They also rely on donations of school clothing and stationery, household essentials like crockery, cutlery, and towels, as well as second-hand furniture and appliances Additionally, support in the form of sponsored professional services, from medical and dental to mechanical and electrical, is always welcomed ” She also shared that they were very happy for the funds to be used wherever they are most needed within these areas, as all of them are critical to the daily running of the Centre and the care they provide to the children in their care
When asked about Harcourts UD’s plans for future charity initiatives, Vermaak said, “One of our core values is ‘People First’, and it’s something we try to live out through our actions, relationships, and initiatives Whether it's our clients, colleagues, service providers or the community at large, we believe in putting people first and making a tangible difference in their lives
“We most definitely plan to continue with future charity initiatives, with our next fundraiser planned for 2026 We’re already looking forward to identifying another deserving local cause to support ”

AT just 14 years old, Carlisle Maree is already making a name for himself in the competitive world of school sports, showcasing exceptional talent in both cricket and rugby that has coaches and spectators taking notice
The Grade 8 learner at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School has had a remarkable sporting journey that began at CW Hendrickse Primary School, where he captained the Under-13 rugby team and established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the field
Speaking to UD Express, his father, Hadrian Maree, said that Carlisle’s sporting prowess became evident during his time at CW Hendrickse Primary School, where he played multiple positions including eighth-man, flank and lock for the rugby team His consistency was remarkable - scoring two or more tries in every game he played throughout the season “He played every game as if it were a final,” said Maree, reflecting on Carlisle’s dedication and intensity on the field
This outstanding performance earned him the prestigious Player of the Year award for 2024 at CW Hendrickse Primary School, cementing his reputation as a rising star in school sports
Transitioning to Daniel Pienaar THS in 2025, Maree wasted no time making his mark His debut cricket match against Die Brandwag Hoërskool was nothing short of spectacular, taking five wickets and earning the Man of

the Match award - a performance that immediately caught the attention of coaches and opposition alike
“It was acknowledged at that game that he was going to be a force to be reckoned with,” Maree recalled
Such was his impact that coaches made the bold decision to promote him to play with the Under-15 team, despite being only 14 years old This leap of faith paid dividends as Ma-
ree’s aggressive, fearless style of play earned him a coveted spot in the school’s first team
Carlisle’s exceptional 2025 season

culminated in a clean sweep at the school’s Sports Awards, where he claimed three trophies in his age group: Best Batsman, Best Bowler, and Most Influential Player of the Year
As a natural all-rounder, Carlisle has demonstrated the rare ability to contribute with both bat and ball, making him an invaluable asset to any team
When the rugby season commenced, Maree seamlessly transitioned his success from the cricket field to the rugby pitch Playing primarily at fly-half and inside-centre, he proved equally formidable in rugby, combining strength, speed, and tactical awareness that made him difficult for opposing teams to contain
“He is a slippery customer, constantly putting the defence under pressure,” noted Maree, highlighting Carlisle’s elusive running style
The Under-14 team’s success this year was highlighted by their victory in the Tinara Cup
Playing against boys three to four years older and consistently performing at the highest level, Carlisle represents the future of school sports His ability to excel across multiple disciplines whilst maintaining the intensity and dedication that has become his trademark suggests even greater achievements lie ahead
Going forward, Carlisle will need donations of cricket gear, such as an equipment bag, bat, gloves, shin pads, helmet, and spikes - any equipment to help him prosper
